Reviews of Brunei Gallery SOAS
T. H. K.
Awesome place and awesome exhibitions. I went there last summer to see the exhibition about the Sikh Empire in today's Indian and Pakistani Punjab under Ranjit Singh in the 19th century. And it was the best.
The decriptions, the pictures, the items - just everything was perfect. I enjoyed it much to explore the fascinating history of the Sikhs in this little museum/gallery.
I would recommend it to everyone interested in Asian and African culture.

A nice free museum that's part of the SOAS University of London. There's an ever changing program of exhibits and on the day I visited it was Film Poster Art in Africa. Nice to see some rather amusing interpretations of the films the posters were meant to advertise. Especially for films I've seen before. Really interesting the artists try to make their art stand out from the crowd with extra colourful arrangement, not to mention gore.

The Brunei gallery is small and free and puts on regularly fascinating exhibitions covering subjects that I for one might never have given much thought to, for example contemporary egyptian weaving, or kente cloth, plus many that appeal more obviously, such as the oriental ceramics and Mozambiquan propaganda posters currently on display. Either way I have learned to trust their judgment. It always forget that it is closed Monday. If you are there at lunchtime there are often some Hare Krishnas (I think) dishing out free tasty vegetable curry nearby. It does not appear to indoctrinate you.

Wonderful gallery and an amazing exhibition. Was fortunate enough to attend when an expert was on hand to talk through one of the displays, a howitzer. Excellent free walked tour through the exhibition too, lovely and interactive. Also much needed air conditioning on a day like yesterday!

The Brunei Gallery, another of London's cultural gems, it is a well appointed venue just off Russell Square. The Gallery features constantly changing exhibitions and displays from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday (10:30 am - 5 pm) with late night opening on Thursdays. Free entry!

Visited the Empire of Sikhs exhibition held at this gallery. A very well put together collection of historical artefacts of the little talked about Sikh Empire. The information with each artefact is well researched and a lovely timeline of the Punjab and Sikh history in line with world history for reference is included. A must see for all.
A. M.
It is part of a school as the name indicates but I went to see the exhibition about the origins of yoga and it was very well presented. The entrance was free of charge. The staff was welcoming and helpful.

an interesting little gallery. it's free to enter and worth checking out. when we went there was an exhibit on sudan with some real wonderful photography. upstairs is a japanese roof garden. I imagine it's a lot prettier in summer as there wasn't any overhanging greenery when we went but is a nice quiet spot.
H. W.
Would be 4* if the roof top dinky Japanese Garden had been a building site! 2 roomed free entry exhibition area showing lovely Japanese lacquer work at the mo'. Worth a ,15 min pipin and peruse.

Pen Art(General Remarks)
Infinity of lines and dots have symbolism. Such symbolism is ever changing according to the spirit’s depth. All works are kaleidoscopic; they are usually composed of indescribable expressions. Therefore, art’s depth also can be said to be unlimited. Is pen art’s depth also infinite? In other words, do the lines and dots flowing from the nib of a pen have an artistic qualification? In this respect, it is worth thinking deeply. Pen art begins from an essence of nature’s fundamental values. From the standpoint of value, or color, a harmony of black and white is essential in nature. As it is impossible to see any color in darkness, distinguishing color is an essential role of light. That is why the soul is drawn to light. Whiteness, or light is a spiritual reflection of the soul while blackness, or darkness is a reality of life on earth. As the color green is an essential color of vegetation, burnt charcoal is an earthy color that will stay near black. Blackness is heterogeneous and may be hostile to life. If blackness belongs to the essence of nature, it also may be said to represent the image of death. A combination of black and white constitutes degrees of lightness and darkness. When painting black on a white background, the soul is transported to the white background. Whiteness comes to life when contrasted with black line and black space. In this case, soul also may be expressed through the blackness. Soul may be transported to the black or a combination of white and black, which shed a mysterious merit to the soul or spirit. Pen arts starts and ends from an essence of nature’s fundamental contrasts. The primary essence is infinite and eternal while the artistic harmony of black and white can take one’s breath away. But, this is not possible until a metamorphosis has been realized over many years and spiritual transcendence has occurred. The transfer of spirit occurs when one’s life experiences are projected onto the white canvas in harmony with blackness. That is the true'pen art.' Artist Lee Young Jun

"Lee young jun PEN ART overview"
(Overview:總論)PEN ART(Korea)
-
The infinity of lines and dots is symbolic.
Its symbolism is inexhaustible depending on the depth of the mind.
All works are like that.
Because it is indefinite, it leads to indescribable expression.
Thus, the depth of art is infinite.
When it comes to pen art, is there infinite depth?
In general, the lines and dots flowing from the tip of the pen
Is it possible to have artistry?
You need to think deeply about this.
The art of the pen begins with the essence of the fundamental color of nature.
In the essence of color, the harmony of black and white is the fundamental of nature.
Like you can't see colors in a dark place without lighting
It is the essential function of light to be able to distinguish colors.
Therefore, it attracts the spirit in the light that appears white.
White or light is the image of the soul of the spirit.
The natural color is black. Just as green is the essential color of plants
Burned charcoal is an essential color that remains black.
There can be no movement of life in absolute darkness.
Black is heterogeneous and hostile to life.
While black is the essence of nature, black is a spiritual image of death.
When white is combined with black, contrast is achieved.
If you paint black on the white screen, the 靈 is transferred to the white screen.
When it meets the black line and the black side, the white resurrects (復活).
Spirit can be expressed through black.
Spirit (靈) is the only thing that can be introduced into black, and the colors of spirit and soul are black and white.
When combined, it has a mystery. And the art of the pen is the essence of nature's fundamental color
It starts with and ends with the essence of the fundamental color.
The fundamental essence is infinite and eternity, and the harmony between black and white is artistic (藝術的).
You can live and breathe enough. It has been refined and completed through a long time.
It is only possible after this is achieved, and a perfect melody containing the soul must be premised.
The spirit world is created only when the spirit is transferred to the white screen of the ancient and vivid melody in the harmony of black and white.
That is the true art of the pen.

"Lee young jun PEN ART 총론"
