Reviews of Dulwich Picture Gallery
S. M.
I really enjoyed the Helen Frankenthaler: Radical Beauty exhibition. The gallery wasn't too busy which made it comfortable to use during the pandemic. The rest of the paintings in the gallery were well curated and stunning.
M. D.
Always a wonderful escape and the chance to enjoy some wonderful portraits by some of the world's greatest painters including Rembrandt and Murillo
G. W.
A hidden gem in the midst of the South London suburbia. Designed and built by Sir Soane as the world's first purpose-built public art gallery in 1830s boasting an important permanent collection of Italian, Dutch, French and English Old Masters. In addition, temporary visiting exhibitions are of the highest quality and explore modern topics with rigour and imagination. Highly recommended to any disconcerting art lover
G. S.
Great cafe but the gallery is mainly old masters, with little educational back up so not very attractive for younger visitors. Entry cost is too high for what is there.
C. R.
Wonderful atmosphere in a lovely village setting with pictures well presented and lighting mostly well done although sometimes the glare prevents viewing from certain angles. The descriptions are small and often the alarms go off if you lean in to read them or look at the painting details. There was a notice that they are reevaluating their method of presentation so hopefully these will be fixed soon. Very good temporary exhibit of Rembrandt's works.
V. R.
Beautiful gallery with some great pieces of art mainly 16th to 18th century. Interesting stories in the paintings tag, most beautiful pieces are probably the Rembrandt and the Poussin, a couple of Guido Reni and Rubens, plus some Gainsborough and Reynolds, a couple of very small Raphael and an unmissable portrait of young queen Victoria. The garden and the rest of the complex are worth a visit too!
P. D.
A gem of a gallery set in leafy Dulwich. The exhibitions are always worth visiting and the cafe and facilities are first rate.

I keep coming back here for the quality of the exhibitions they put together. The latest one is Rembrandt and Light which is spectacular and very intimate show. I’ve seen shows of Rembrandt all over the world and this one is special. Visit with the audio guide and get lost in this world
C. C.
It is an excellent small gallery, well worth a visit, but prices have increased exponentially. When I visited in 2016 entry cost £5, then £8 in 2019. Now it costs £16.50. Hurry while you can still afford it!

Beautiful building and wonderful permanent collection. Highly recommended!

Very much enjoyed the Rembrandt exhibition. Have an Art Pass so £8 entry. Nice collection of old master paintings. Beautiful John Soanes designed building. Lovely area never been to Dulwich before.

Nice little gallery with some Dutch masters. I can confirm what others said about the staff: they are considering themselves a bit too important, rushing through and you better make way. Their security guard should maybe be uniformed - the attire should go with the venue. The ticket price for the permanent exhibition is £8 without the donation. £15 is a bit too much for the special exhibition. It is understood they are a private charity, and maybe they need to charge this much, but then the staff at least needs some proper training. Rather cut staff numbers (seven seems a high number to be present at the same time for a small gallery).
M. A.
Very pleasant but underwhelming collection. Walked through Dulwich Park and around Dulwich village afterwards and the walk was more enjoyable
P. B.
Lovely little gallery but extremely expensive for what it was.
A. K.
Went to visit the Sargent Watercolour exhibition. Very nice and doesn't take too long. Took some pictures in the garden, where there are several places to buy some refreshments.
M. H.
Beautiful collection of Art - highly recommend. One of my favourites London.
M. H.
Unearthed Exhibition is fantastic.
C. Y.
Current show is amazing!
E. H.
Lovely gallery with friendly staff
J. O.
friendly staff, good coffee. Nice food but maybe slightly more expensive than some places.
C. B.
Very interesting exhibition. Some surprises too, such as Charles Jones, many of whose works look as though they were taken yesterday.
A. L.
Helen Frankenthaler exhibition is beautiful 😍
D. K.
Beautiful location in a nice family- friendly atmosphere.

Good exhibition. Would be happy to return

Dulwich Picture Gallery is marvellous... Don't miss it
P. B.
All images and drawings were so nice to the extent will can write out stories or makes Singing out of the things in the gallery thanks
M. B.
Not huge but a very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. Lovely surroundings, interesting photography exhibition when we were there, all complemented by the café and garden.
j. b.
This small but important historic gallery designed by the redoubtable John Soane stages frequent exhibitions. The permanent collection includes works by Rembrandt and Watteau.
The modern cafe set in a pleasant garden draws an equally large if not more enthusiastic crowd. Certainly adds up to a worthwhile outing.
S. K.
It used to be free for visiting permanent gallery but now we have to pay fee even for local residents... So now just enjoy the outdoors green ground..
P. B.
A hidden gem. Rarely busy, but very high standards
D. N.
Stunning exhibition in a beautiful building
M. U.
Historic art gallery with absolutely beautiful garden outside
S. Y.
Small but intimate gallery. Rembrandt's light exhibition is for every filmmakers.
G.
Lovely small gallery with restaurant and cafe in beautiful grounds.
L. B.
Wonderful Gallery, They have a number of outstanding exhibitions every year, the current one examining aspects of Edward Bawdens illustrations and watercolours. The gallery is privately financed so help them by eating in their lovely restaurant or visiting their shop. A day at this gallery is always a day well spent due to the fabulous exhibitions and overall ambience. If you love art, you will love this gallery. lectures, and films are part of the galleries experience as well as a host of well orchestrated special events.
D. H.
Really nice to have this world class gallery sitting in a residential area across from a park. Easy to park and close to Dulwich Village. Gallery itself have a passable cafe within the grounds. Free entry to the cafe.
Would be nice to be able to see the permanent exhibition for free.
D. C.
Beautifully little gallery set in lovely grounds. They have great original works by some very famous artists as well as regular exhibitions.
I was lucky enough to go and see the Escher exhibition which was fab.
D. D.
Only a short train journey from London Bridge, it's hard to believe that you're still in London when you visit Dulwich Picture Gallery. Set in its own grounds, the gallery is an elegant Regency Building with a permanent collection of 17th and 18th century Old Master paintings. I have to confess that I don't visit the gallery for the collection, but am there quite regularly for their outstanding exhibition programme that ranges from classical painting to drawing, illustration and photography. Personal favourites have been Norman Rockwell, Andy Warhol, Rex Whistler and the Wyeth Family. It can be very busy at weekends, so worth making a visit during the week if possible. It has a good bookshop and a cafe where you can enjoy a view of the grounds, especially nice during the summer months. #gallery
A. W.
A wonderful gallery with well displayed paintings. 'Girl at a window' by Rembrandt was simply magnificent. Initial Ticket reception not very friendly or welcoming and the Cafe rather chaotic - cake provided then 10 minutes later, the drinks! The Exhibition of Hockney etchings was excellent.
P. P.
Lovely old beautiful location between Brixton and Pekham with permanent collection and also a beautiful garden. Very interesting artistic exhibition. Just a short walk from the underground. The staff is not very gentle and ready to smile. That is a pity but after all i tell you to go because the nice sensation by all the artwork and also the building. Step-access and disabile parking
C. H.
First visit to the gallery to see Tove Jansson exhibition. We had already bought our tickets online so the only odd thing about arriving at the gallery is it wasn't clear that we could go straight in, there were tills for purchasing tickets but we already had ours so walked right in. The gallery is small, perfectly formed and the building and layout is well appointed in the grounds. At the entrance of the exhibition (invade the gallery) was the first point we were told that there was free lockers for our rucksacks at the front door of the gallery (they're literally just inside the very first automatic doors but tucked away so easily missed), so we went back and dropped them off. Recommended because some parts of the exhibition were a bit of a squeeze (Saturday is going to be popular though!) Again, the gallery can only work with the space they have, Janssons illustrations are small and some areas of the display naturally drove many people to zoom in for a closer look. Really enjoyable overall and a treat as many items typically don't leave their home gallery in Finland. The gallery shop was very nice with a variety of gifts. I had hoped for more Jansson prints but there's a guidebook of the entire exhibition available to buy. (Parking was easy - free parking on Gallery Rd, but if you visit Saturday morning prepare to compete with families going to the playing fields across the road.)

Dulwich Picture Gallery is an art gallery in Dulwich, South London. The gallery, designed by Regency architect Sir John Soane using an innovative and influential method of illumination, opened to the public in 1817. It is the oldest public art gallery in England and was made an independent charitable trust in 1994. Until this time the gallery was part of Alleyn's College of God's Gift, a charitable foundation established by the actor, entrepreneur and philanthropist Edward Alleyn in the early-17th century. The acquisition of artworks by its founders and bequests from its many patrons resulted in Dulwich Picture Gallery housing one of the country's finest collections of Old Masters, especially rich in French, Italian and Spanish Baroque paintings and in British portraits from Tudor times to the 19th century. The Dulwich Picture Gallery and its mausoleum are listed Grade II* on the National Heritage List for England.
G. J.
Significant collection of British and European old masters. Possibly too many for the space, there are some wonderful exhibits. Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Lely, Canaletto, Poussin, Rubens, Murillo, the list goes on. Also a brilliant Sohlberg exhibition Q2 2019 and Rembrandt Q4 2019 among others.
Good facilities, very pleasing shop and café. Opposite the park and 10 mins walk from the railway station.
A. D.
Like the Dulwich Picture Gallery a lot. Great collection of Old Masters & interesting visiting shows. The current Escher show is on until 17.1.16 - well worth a visit.
Slight downside is the small gallery space which can get very crowded.
Decent cafe & lovely grounds.
Highly recommended.
D. G.
Excellent gallery, very well displayed and organised permanent and temporary exhibitions. The missing star goes for the unfriendly staff at the coffee shop. It's a real shame because the shop itself and its position looking back the gallery and gardens is great, unfortunately the staff doesn't give a damn about providing a good service and most of them look like they don't really want you there..
J. W.
A wonderful collection of great paintings. Well worth a visit. John Singer Sargent exhibition an eye opener (for me anyway) as many watercolours /Venitian scenes etc that I wasn't expecting..until this exhibition came along)
D. Q.
It is always a pleasure to visit here (probably my 8th or 9th visit today). The paid-for exhibitions are always done well and have unusual and thoughtful themes. The staff are friendly and helpful. A walk afterwards in the park rounds off the trip nicely.
D. S.
The first public picture gallery in the UK, it's a little out of central London where most art of the famed institutions are located.I headed here for the Hockey exhibition and I was rightfully blown away by the variety and expanse of his work on display. After which, I visited the permanent galleries which weren't of as much interest to myself, although there were some amazing works there. Leave a bit of time to soak up the sun in the gardens outside!
S. T. T.
Joined the gallery for a couple of exhibitions we wanted to see. Downside of the place is difficult to get to. Not in central London have to catch overground train to get there from Victoria. (Cost included in rail card though) Finally a 15 minute walk to the gallery.
Gallery well laid out, with informative information.
Several food options available. Snacks and also a restaurant which serves lunch time meals. Reasonable value and quality.
D. P. R.
Very interesting museum. Quite small and therefore easy to enjoy at your own pace. Good collection, with great works by Poussin, Murillo or Rembrandt, among others. Great representation of British painting and a building designed by Sir John Soane. There's a lovely garden around the building and it's near Belair park. Down side is the way of reaching it via public transport as there's no underground nearby (closest one is Brixton more than 30 minutes walk) and therefore whether train from Victoria to West Dulwich or bus.
N. M.
Nice grounds and cafe with a permanent collection free to students. It has paintings from many of the well known schools. It is worth a visit.
Look out for regular temporary exhibits held in the wings, these are overpriced though.
P. C.
This gallery has a long and interesting history, as I am sure it will tell you. I will not repeat all here.
I believe it is the oldest gallery in England.
The story goes that the college was rich and the masters enjoyed spending the money as much on entertainment as education. So when an art collection needed a home all the entertainment paid a dividend.
The gallery is not too large, and really worth a visit. Many galleries are too large to see even a small amount of that they offer. This is a nice size for some good, if not exceptional works.
As the gallery is private, there maybe a small entrance fee.
It has a pleasant coffee shop with nice nibbles, and equally pleasant small garden. Much more pleasant for a coffee than a shop in the road.
Afterwards ...
You can also either venture across College Road (east) to Dulwich Park, listed, and has about everything a park should have; or literally on the other side Gallery Road (west) Belair Park. I prefer Dulwich Park.
There is also a great coffee shop in the park near the lake. Fab food too. See end.
I write this because of comments below about getting there. You can get there via West Dulwich (from Victoria) overground station and walk along Gallery Road. It is a leafy walk as you stroll past Belair Park. You may even be able to walk through the park.
You can also travel to Herne Hill from Victoria, or Thameslink. A taxi from the front of the station, a 3O minute walk, a 37 bus (below).
You can also catch train to North Dulwich Station (from London Bridge) and walk through Dulwich Village. From Brixton (Victoria underground every few minutes) from where you can walk (30 minutes, not too interesting) or catch either the:
P4 (single decker) that will stop outside the gallery, or you can get off a little earlier and walk through Dulwich Village; or
37 (double decker, direction Peckham) that will take you to North Dulwich station again.
Both buses run every 15 or so minutes.
42 (double decker), same stop ag 37.
12,49,176,185. Get off at Dulwich Library. Walk through park or down Court Lane. Park more pleasant.
If you do walk through Dulwich Park you can exit Court Gate, walk down Court Lane, past the old graveyard, back through the Dulwich Village to return to Brixton (bus) or London Bridge (train).
If you Google first you will be able to locate where the village stocks one stood the bottom of Court Lane. The sign is still there.
There is also another fabulous coffee shop in the park near the boating lake. Does other things like nice food too! Usually quite busy, especially if weather is nice. You can even buy wine and beer if you wish to just laze on the grass and watch the world go by ....
P. S.
Make no mistake, the Dulwich Picture Gallery is a serious affair. Full to the rafters with Old Masters and a changing series of contemporary shows, it's a lovely old venue that is a little off the beaten track for tourists. Locals however have no excuse not to visit this historic London location - it's as good as any of its contemporaries closer to the centre of town.
P. B.
All images and drawings were so nice to the extent will can write out stories or makes Singing out of the things in the gallery thanks
N. H.
Interesting focus on European painting over a limited period, grouped by country. Loved the light effect created by stained glass in the mausoleum. Great cafe in attractive grounds.
J. M. D.
Dulwich Picture Gallery is marvellous... Don't miss it
J. O.
friendly staff, good coffee. Nice food but maybe slightly more expensive than some places.
G.
Lovely small gallery with restaurant and cafe in beautiful grounds.
A. L.
Helen Frankenthaler exhibition is beautiful 😍
S. E.
The oldest gallery in the UK, beautiful building designed by Sir John Soane. Make sure you get to the featured exhibition before the last day otherwise you might not get a postcard!
J. L.
First time visiting. A real gem in a beautiful space and with a collection that can be consumed during a single visit without getting overwhelming.
J. B.
Not the easiest place to get to, but starting from Aldgate I found buses 40 and 42 went near enough. Not my favourite gallery because the main collection is of severe, dark oils. But I went to see the Singer Sargeant exhibition. It is a stunning collection of his lesser known watercolors. An absolute delight, awesome and a great achievement putting them together.
K. M.
Although not huge this houses many varied classical exhibitions and is set in small gardens on the edge of Dulwich. The gallery hosts a number of other events over the course of the year and is worth small, regular visits. It's just across the road from Dulwich Park.

Dulwich Picture Gallery sprung out of one of the most successful art dealerships in London during the late 18th century - the partnership of Frenchman, Noël Desenfans (1745 - 1807), and his younger Swiss friend, the painter, Sir Francis Bourgeois, RA (1756 - 1811). The enterprise appears to have been launched by the dowry of Desenfan’s wife, Margaret Morris.
In 1790 the pair were commissioned by Stanislaus Augustus, King of Poland, to form a Royal Collection from scratch. They devoted the next five years exclusively to this task during which time Poland was gradually partitioned by its more powerful neighbours leading in 1795 to its complete disappearance as an independent state. The King was forced to abdicate, which left the two dealers with a Royal Collection on their hands.
Bourgeois and Desenfans strove to resolve their situation in two ways. In private they sold individual works from their Polish stock and replaced them with further important purchases. In public they sought a home for their “Royal Collection” approaching, amongst others, the Tsar of Russia and the British Government. When it became clear that they would not be able to sell the collection in its entirety, they began to think to whom they might bequeath it. This became more pressing after Desenfan’s death in 1807, which left Bourgeois as the sole owner. At that date there was no National Gallery, so the key candidate was the British Museum. However, Bourgeois found its trustees too ‘arbitrary’ and ‘aristocratic’ and so he decided to leave his collection to Dulwich College instead, despite him having no obvious connection with the school. More important than the destination was the stipulation in the will that the paintings should be made available for the ‘inspection of the public’. So it was that Dulwich Picture Gallery - England’s first purpose-built public art gallery - was founded by the terms of Sir Francis Bourgeois’s will upon his death in 1811.
Bourgeois and Desenfans reflected the taste and market opportunities of their time by concentrating on European painting of the 17th and 18th centuries, the period sometimes known as the ‘Age of Baroque’. Their taste was broad with a strong representation of all the major national styles of painting - Italian, Spanish, French, Flemish and Dutch. The great collection of English painting at Dulwich is largely due to two later donations. The group of Linley family portraits was given in 1835 and the Fairfax Murray Gift (also in the main comprising English portraits) in 1911.
During the period 1600 - 1750 European art was at its most rich and most diverse. This was an age when artists were working for radically different societies and did so with astonishing individualism and experimental audacity. The result is an impressive range of style and different ways of looking at the world. To make sense of this kaleidoscope of painting, the collection has been hung by country and period. The Latins - the Italians, Spanish and French are hung at the north end of the Gallery; the Northern Europeans - Flemish, Dutch and British - to the south. The Gallery as a whole thus allows for a ‘broad-brush’ contrast between these two European polarities. Today Dulwich Picture Gallery houses one of the finest collections of Old Masters in the world.

A precious gem neatly tucked in South London. It holds a wide range of impressive collections, and exclusive exhibitions are often held. Visit the official Dulwich Picture Gallery website to see What's On. Nearby, there is Dulwich Park- if you fancy a relaxing stroll afterwards.

Lovely gallery with friendly staff

Right next to West Dulwich station (3 stops from victoria), this is a gem of a gallery in the south east london area. has some fantastic displays and great for children. also has great open area which occaisionally has displays in the summer. worth a visit where ever you are from
J. R.
Beautiful spot in Dulwich. Not sure their standard collection of art would be to my taste, but the M.C. Esher exhibit was fantastic if a bit crowded. It was worth the trip.
K. B.
Fantastic. Drove from Dorset - took the plunge and decided to drive London's mean streets. Good decision, easy drive after leaving M3> Richmond (relief) Easy, free parking outside the gallery (that is worth 5 stars in itself) Sunny day for a picnic in the quiet grounds surrounding the gallery. Small café and coffee /cake wagon outside in grounds. Eric Ravilious exhibition superb, prebooked (busy Wednesday) but not timed tickets about 30mins queue to enter, no problem. Lovely staff.
R. D.
This place is my little corner reminding me of Helsinki Kumpula. I love the whole atmosphere here. Last year almost every day i visited this place and worked there. Staff are amazing and so lovely service!
Quality food and coffee and pastry!
J. S.
Beautiful John Singer Sargent Watercolours exhibition - try to see it before it goes on 8th October. Plus, lovely cake in the gardens!
A. B.
A lovely museum with some fascinating exhibitions to supplement their permanent collection. There's a nice cafeteria as well as gardens to sit in during the summer.
B. P.
John Singer Sargent exhibition is certainly worth seeing. His watercolours are so inspiring. Disappointed the outside coffee stand was shut though.
P. W.

S. K.
Amazing exhibition of Sargent watercolors. I could tell each time where the painting were made from the chose of tone .love it
Less impressed by the service in the gallery cafe ,terrible!
C. O.
I really enjoyed this picture gallery. The Slade picture exhibition was really interesting; it really outlined some of the key challenges faced by artists at the turn of the century. I would really recommend it to everyone who is fortunate to come across it.
S. N.
Lovely day at the M.C. Escher exhibition - it was very reasonably priced and a very enjoyable day. The picture gallery had a great vibe and felt very homely.
C. Y.
Current show is amazing!
J. N.
Any review I might write would not be a patch on the review-article by Ian Jack in The Guardian, Saturday 16 May, on the Ravilious Exhibition. It is timely ('… appeal to people who otherwise struggle with the idea of Englishness'), illuminating, and heart-felt. Ian is right: 'Landscapes are important to national identities… Visitors took their time to gaze on each picture' [Absolutely true the 4 times I have visited it…] Ravilious had given them permission to like England, and to mourn it.'
Perhaps you should ask Ian how many stars he'd give it. The rating above is mine.
S. W.
Great gallery, with regular interesting exhibitions. Quite small, so can be very busy. Pleasant grounds and cafe.

This was a delightful surprise discovery -- apparently the world's first public art gallery. With THREE Rembrandts! Well worth a detour for a bit of an escape from the typical tourist venues. My only complaint was the rather loud and unpleasant way in which the closing time was announced, but I can't mark the staff down just for wanting to end their day as they were otherwise lovely. Will definitely make a return trip.

A bit overpriced and no information available for free.

(Translated) Great little gallery, I was surprised that there were really great paintings there! Well-known coaches and less so .. But the entrance fee is very expensive considering that the other amazing museums in London are free

(Translated) Visited the British Museum. From the front of Brixton Subway Station, take a bus to the Dulwich Picture Gallery (Stop VR) bus stop. It wasn't that big, so it didn't take long to see all the permanent exhibitions. When I went there was a special exhibition by Tove Jansson. There were few customers and I could see it comfortably. Rembrandt, Murillo, etc. are on display.

(Translated) We arrived at bus P4 from Brixton underground station in about 20 minutes. It was 8 £ for the permanent exhibition only. There was also a special exhibition at extra cost. It's not a big museum. There were few people and it was quiet and I could see every painting slowly, such as a famous painter and a small but last supper. The cafe is also nice.

(Translated) 👍In this 📷 super wonderful London museum, the largest part of the collection is occupied by paintings from the 17th and 19th centuries, but paintings from other eras are also presented. When visiting, you can see the works of great artists like Rembrandt, Antoine Watteau, Bartolome Esteban Murillo, Paul Rubens, Rafael and others ... 👍👍👍

(Translated) I loved the collection of paintings. It is one of the oldest galleries, created especially for that purpose in 1817. Although the space is relatively small, it is worth visiting because it has many valuable works, English, Dutch, Spanish and a little Italian. In addition, a beautiful park for relaxation.

Me encantó la colección de cuadros. Es una de las galerías más antiguas, creada especialmente para ese fin en 1817.
