Reviews of Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art
K. W.
Wonderful opportunity to see all the permanent collection out on display. With bonus of Paul Coldwell's sculptures and poems. Great cafe too.
K. C.
A gorgeous wee gallery and so calm and quiet. Not LOADS to see but a nice collection (even for someone who doesn't totally understand modern art cafe!) And cafe looks gorgeous.
M. S. (.
The Estorick Collection isn't vast, but it's quirky and interesting with an essential Italian flavour that certainly sets it apart. You'll find paintings, sculpture and drawings from the Italy of the 20th century, when dictators ruled most of Europe and the world was in turmoil because of them. Whether or not you believe (with the Futurists) that Venice should be bulldozed as part of the past we should all be better off without, doesn't really matter. There's enough here to keep you interested and it's mostly stuff you won't find elsewhere. The cafe is nice and so too, in the summer, is the garden.
K. H.
Beautiful gallery. Small but impressive and worth a visit. Friendly staff.
F. M.
The permanent collection changes regularly, which by itself makes it worth visiting at least once a year.
Exhibitions are usually small (a couple for large rooms), but well curated.
Bonus: the food at the café is lovely, as is the seating area in the garden.
L. I.
Nice and probably not very well known gem with (in my modest and lay opinion) a few unmissable masterpieces of Italian 20th century art. Very interesting!
D. L.
Wonderful gallery, thoughtfully curated and very thought provoking
M. C.
Great Gallery specialized in Italian art. I had the chance to watch a beautiful exhibition about Campari Soda advertising.
D. W.
Found this wonderful gallery by pure serendipity, a lady asked me for the directions to get there. The current Tullio Crali exhibition is fabulous, I didn't know the artist and as I love the Futurist Movement, it was a real treat. All the staff are really friendly and helpful. Top marks.
G. J.
Friendly, well organised modest gallery on a few floors in Islington. Based on an Italian collection it has a strong Futurist feature. Staff are friendly and helpful and there is a pleasing shop. Handy for bus and tube.
L.
A Beautiful small gallery, set up in a townhouse, that is easy to pass if you are not looking for it, as it almost feels hidden. Wonderful pieces of Italian art in a calm and serene setting. The time that we went was not busy so it was a great opportunity to study the art at leisure and without distractions.
There is a cafe and shop to enjoy and a conservatory along with a small garden area.
P. P.
Really interesting exhibition on Futurist artist Crali, setting out his career from late 1920’s till late 1980’s. Also, the gallery is small and friendly- no one to stop you taking photos, and there’s plenty of space and time to sit down and reflect. Little shop and a licensed cafe which looks like it will be brilliant in warm weather when they can open the doors onto the garden. A little oasis in Islington.
J. W.
Always something interesting. Cafe makes fresh light lunches. And , come summer, there's the hidden garden.
A. W.
Hidden tranquil gem just off Highbury Corner. Wonderful mainly 20th Century Italian Art. Lovely little cafe serving Italian dishes. Very long wait for table service when busy as lovely ever smiling waitress serves tables, washes dishes makes food and drinks single handed! Delicious when it arrives. Please provide her with some help !! Current Italian Threads Exhibition is a must. Very easy to get a slot on line.
S. E.
Just bought an Artfund membership and this is the first place we visited to take advantage of 50% off entry fee. 3.25£ per person. The gallery is comprised of 2 reasonably sized rooms, occupied by a changing exhibition, in our case, movie sets from pre Second World War movie sets. The three floors above are dedicated to the permanent collection of Estorick’s Italian sculpture and paintings. Lovely outdoor area to sit and have a san pelligrino and nice gift shop with a particular focus on Italian art books.
D. G.
Worth the visit for the house and cafe alone. Recent exhibition of Italian modernist film set design of the 30s made for a great overall 2 hour experience.
O. O.
The food was devine, the service was extremely good and the atmosphere was amazing. Would throughly recommend! The wine was lovely, had a wonderful luch there.
N. B.
Fantastic collection of modern Italian art in a nice gallery with pleasant courtyard garden.
T. D.
Excellent gallery focusing on Italian futurist artists. Within walking distance of Highbury and Islington underground.
H. P.
A small gem of a gallery showing twentieth century Italian art, with some particularly fine futurist pieces. At the time of writing it was showing an interesting temporary exhibition of textile design from the heydey of Italian modernism. The attached café is also a joy - a ray of Italian sunshine on a cold May day. Highly recommended all round.
K. L.
A gorgeous little gallery spread over three floors of a Georgian town house. Their permanent collection on the top two floors is free and definitely worth checking out. The ground floor exhibitions have yet to disappoint and are a fantastic price!! The café setting is very sweet and there is outdoor seating in the front courtyard. Thank you! 😀
R. A.
Fantastic collection of 20th century Italian art
S. V.
the location and the choice of paintings and drawings make this small Museum a must see. Mr. Estorik was certainly a visionnaire.
R. A.
A lovely little gallery. Well worth a visit.
Some very interesting exhibits.
N.
Amazing permanent collection of Italian art and interesting exhibitions at ground floor. Also a nice caffè with good food.
A. C.
Very cute, small museum with interesting works from some of the best modern Italian artists.
R. B.
Stunning gallery over three floors of a beautiful Georgian house. The permanent exhibition is worth the trip, but the two recent temporary exhibitions: Mogdiliani drawings and War in in the Sunshine have been truly exceptional. Welcoming staff and a great little cafe with garden. Just 5 minutes walk from Highbury & Islington tube.
S. W.
Excellent - fab art and nice garden for lunch!
E. H.
Wonderful collection of Italian contemporary art including a fascinating first world war exhibition with works by British war artist and pilot Sydney Carline
M. S. W.
If you are interested in twentieth century and contemporary European art then the Estorick Collection is a must-see. There are some amazing works of art here of great cultural significance. The futurist works, in particular, and some of the other paintings in the permanent exhibits are well-worth visiting again and again. Although an entry fee is taken, bear in mind that there are various concessions and entry is free for students. The temporary exhibits are also great and the building as a whole is surprisingly spacious. The food, atmosphere and service in the cafe is excellent, with a wide range of Italian food, drinks and coffee, with garden and conservatory seating available. Always an enriching experience to visit
W. H.
Very interesting. Good exhibition, well curated. The notes and information boards were very helpful. We went for the temporary exhibition of Russian Art, which was brilliant. All the art on display was hugely impressive. The place itself is a converted house. Lots of small rooms spread over four creaky floors. Some of the people browsing when we were there were total bloody poseurs, casually chatting in very loud voices so that everyone could hear just how sophisticated they were. It is a shame that interesting places are such magnets for painfully loud people. All the hard surfaces amplify every sound. And the small scale of the rooms put us all too close together. Still, it takes all sorts...
L. C.
Lovely building with a fair assortment of works by Italian artists
M. D.
Fantastic exhibition of their collection with extensive background detail.
A. S.
Nice small collection were to admire some piece of the fathers of the Italian Modern Art
S. S.
Tucked away between busy Highbury & Islington and Essex Rd - such a wonderful collection and building. I went for the Lithographs of Leningrad which left you wanting to see more. Very friendly staff and I loved the fact it was small and quiet. Cafe looked so inviting after cycling in the cold rain and offered tasty looking Italian food aswell as the usual! Am looking forward to going again to see the Futurist exhibition.
G. M.
My dream comes true! I've wanted to see one of my favourite sculptors for a long time after seeing a picture of Umberto Boccioni's Continuity in Space. For those who are obsessed with Art like me this is a lovely museum to visit.
C. W.
I was so surprised at how nice this museum is. Great pieces and a lovely cafe with garden!!!
P. W.
Lovely escape into another world with a homely café appeal Italian style
M. G.
My dream comes true! I've wanted to see one of my favourite sculptors for a long time after seeing a picture of Umberto Boccioni's Continuity in Space. For those who are obsessed with Art like me this is a lovely museum to visit. It is in a small beautiful Georgian house in Islington and holds mainly Italian and Russian art and has a shop selling mostly art books and an Italian cafe where you can have coffee and cake etc. Very easy to get to from Highbury and Islington station, 5mins walk. Recommended for art lovers.
S. C.
Visited the Estorick Collection to see the Tullio Crali exhibition yesterday. Absolutely brilliant. Well laid out and informative but also small and friendly. A really wonderful hour or so, I was fully absorbed. I have been to the Estorick once before and had an equally enjoyable time.
L. C.
Lovely little gallery, fell madly in love with one piece in particular however they didnt have a little post card of it which was disappointing.
A. G.
Charming gallery, great staff, lovely food and drink in a great setting.
S. C.
Really nice place and enjoyed the Compari exhibit. Cafe was too small for the amount of people there plus they charged £5.60 for a small capuccino and custard pastry. That alone almost ruined a lovely visit.
M. E.
A really interesting collection focusing on the Futurism movement. Building v interesting too.
C. R.
Monday evening drawing classes are a very good value option to chill and get the practise going! Good ambiance, confortable space and very well connected location! It will definitely repeat!
P. C.
A real gem. Fine 20th century Italian Art Foundation. The passion seeps through the walls. Exhibitions are always of a high quality and usually show work rarely seen in the UK. Thoroughly recommended for art lovers.
J. H.
A delightful gem of a Gallery in Islington. Some great works from contemporary Italian artists and informative guide to the pieces. Well worth a visit.
J. I.
Fantastic little museum that covers modern italian art, including futurism and concrete colour paintings.Beautiful little italian caffe with perfect italian salads and pasta dishes. Well worth while, an oasis in a busy city.
L. V.
Lovely staff, cute building, but simply isn't worth paying for. The gallery is very small which would be fine should there be a bit more going on. Good for a quick visit, but not really worth paying for..
M. M.
The collection was ok - so, so - there was an entrance fee of £7.50. We had lunch at the cafe there, that was a bonus of this place. The food was good, and the female staff there were friendly and helpful ( more friendly than the manager was! :-)
P. H.
Fine Art Gallery with a permanent collection of Italian works from twentieth century. Regular special exhibitions of themed Italian works. All beautifully curated and presented. The current exhibition is of modern works from the Pinscoteca do Brera gallery in Italy. The Estorick presents its exhibitions with more information about the artists and background to exhibited works than most galleries.
Small Italian-themed café with small selection of light meals.
Free lockers for coats and bags.
T. F.
This is a lovely little gallery showing excellent exhibitions. It also has a great coffee shop.
C. M.
Best cappuccino I’ve had in London!
S. G. S.
Great small museum in Islington, a short walk from the Tube station. You can find beautiful paintings from the Estorick Collection - mostly Italian futurists, you have all the masters with representative pieces - and very good temporary exhibitions.
M. M.
A nice little museum in a converted Georgian house, devoted to italian modern art, including futurist paintings and sculptures. They also have some regular special exhibitions. For instance, I just went to ‘The Years of the Dolce Vita’ featuring great photographs of Hollywood and italian celebrities in Rome during the 1950/60s. The café is also worth a visit on a warm and sunny day with its outdoor seating. They make good coffee, and the italian food is nice and freshly prepared. The downside is that I had to wait about 15 minutes for my gnocchi alla Sorentina because they cooked them from scratch.
M. C.
Small gallery devoted to Italian comtempry art. At the moment you have to book tickets in advance for a time slot.
S. E.
Had a great CPD session here about teaching drawing for STEAM. Knowledgeable teachers, a calming and inspiring space to draw, lots of ideas to take away and use in class. Recommended.
G. R.
Very nice, small gallery with a great collection of modern Italian art and interesting temporary exhibitions + cool cafe. (Not very accessible for people with walking disabilities though).
G. T.
Wonderful gallery with a lovely Italian cafe. When I went, there was a lovely exhibition of English artists who were posted to the Italian-Austrian front in 1918.
C. G.
Splendid exhibition by Fausto Melotti in balance between poetry, geometry and movement with slender lines that seem to support the space. The Collection includes Futurist works of Modern Italian Art. To see.
I. M.
Excellent textile, etc exhibition. A delightful small gallery with great facilities and charming staff/ vulunteers.
A. G.
A place of pilgrimage if you have any interest in 20th century Italian art. Small, but perfectly formed, with a lovely cafè and garden space.
N. B.
Really nice museum. Good staff and excellent cafe/ restaurant with real Italian food.
w. k.
One of the great hidden gems of London insofar as such a thing is still possible. Permanent collection is solid and the special exhibitions are often exceptional.
G. K.
Lovely gallery, cool, quiet, a perfect place for me to see some art. Always well organised and a great cafe in the garden
N. W.
Cute local gallery with great exhibitions. Have been about 3 times in the past year (as its near home). The recent campari exhibition was great

The Estorick, besides it's art collection, has a jewel of a garden, perfect for a quiet moment to read the papers, have a delicious coffee and even a simple, fresh, light lunch.
J. J.
Nice little gallery of Italian art with special exhibitions and a cafe serving Italian food off Upper St . Nice option for a an hour or so.
S. A.

N. B.
Absolutely beautiful and bright building. A collection of art works that are fantastic too but not an incredibly exciting exhibition.
P. E.
We went to see the special exhibition - works from the Giuseppe Iannaccone collection - I was unfamiliar with the Arts but the exhibition was informative and compelling
R. B.
In over five years of visiting I've yet to be disappointed. War in the Air was a highlight of 2017. The Modigliani drawings were perfection.
A. M.
Worth a visit.
B. T.
