Reviews of Hackney Museum

Very helpful staff in a modest but interesting and we'll maintained local museum. Well worth a visit.

Hackney Museum is a small museum in the Hackney area of London focusing on local history of the area. Considering the history of Hackney, a lot of the exhibits focus on the influx of people over the centuries and decades. The story starts with the Roman period, but the story rapidly shifts to the last 200 hundred years with a particular focus on immigrants and by extension the poorer members of society.
There's also a small exhibition room which is currently dedicated to "black" music. Truly amazing to see some old school equipment. A real gem of a museum.

This museum tells the history of hackney’s settlers, food, music, and homes. It ranges from quirky and fascinating (eel shops & 200,000 BCE digging tools) to enlightening and kid-friendly (many different groups of immigrants /where they came from, photographs from the past, interactive displays). Definitely give it a visit if you’re in love with Hackney or need somewhere to take the kids in the daytime. Bang on some steel drums.

A well curated exhibition on the history of vibrant Hackney. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. I especially enjoyed learning about Hackney as hotbed for political activism and how people of different cultures came to call it home.

I had been out shopping & on my way home I needed the toilet I would normally use the toilet upstairs by the library, but they were closed a lovley woman said I could use the toilet in the museum & the lady at the desk was really kind to me she was impressed that I managed to do a 3 point turn in my mobility scooter coming out of the toilet there are some lovley people about 😀

Currently exhibiting here and having première on 7th November. Happy memories of having a studio space @ Colvestone back-in-the-day. 😁😁😁😁

Interesting facts about Hackney, but don’t expect a big place, it is inside a big building.

An unexpected hit with my near two year old (and me!) The museum is great - it's not too busy and lots of interactive parts for kids and I found the history of Hackney really fascinating. Very friendly staff and the museum Teddy is a favourite. Now we've been, our toddler can never go straight into the library. We must always turn right and visit the museum first!
