Reviews of Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery
J. N.
This is the house of the renowned neoclassical architect of 19th century, Sir John Soane. As he loved to invite his guests to his house and he liked them to be impressed by his design, he used a number of techniques in the design of the house. Worthwhile to visit if you are interested in architecture.
B. P.
This place is really worth visiting. After seeing Sir John Soane's house-museum in Holborn seeing Pitzhanger Manor was a must especially for those who live in Ealing, so interesting and important for the local history.
D. G.
A splendid monument to history of arts and culture. It underwent a major restoration which vastly improved the whole setting with surrounding area of Walpole Park. A must visit for art lovers
K. “. j. T.
One of the famous country houses in this borough and a well known British arcticture John Soane owned this house in 1800 and renovated for him and his family. Some rehabilitation and renovation were made afterwards but you can find what the history and advanced arts at that time really were.
A. P.
Found this place at last open. Went last year was under restoration wraps. Very reasonably priced tickets to get in. Restoration to this beautifully light enhanced house is superb. Do visit the conservatory which is an added addition. You have to see it from inside looking out to get it! The conservatory is based on the original plans of the architect who never got the chance to build it. The exquisite hand painted wallpaper in the dining room and long view windows create a vista to the outside grounds. The room is light and airy, the painted ceiling has very modern pale mute colours. This is a house l would want to live in. You think grey is the in colour at the moment - it's there too. The marbled painting and wood effect has been skillfully done. Staff are enthusiastic about this recent renovation. Go along and see what you think and don't forget to get a tour.
D. T.
Very cool architecture, and I thought the insights from the attendants throughout the exhibits really helped enrich the experience
Y. C.
I expected to spend about 30 mins here but instead it was a couple of hours not including the Art exhibition. The house has been beautifully and tastefully restored and the information about it and John Soane is presented in a very interesting way. Such presentations do not usually hold my attention but here I read every word. Very informative staff too.
Lovely cafe /restaurant in the adjoining building.
S. O. t.
The house itself is very interesting if you are even vaguely into architecture with very enthusiastic staff.
Haven't had an opportunity to see an exhibition there yet, but the house alone is worth a visit.
G. D.
This recently redone listed Manor has a beautiful surroundings, lovely park if the weather is right. There is always an exhibition going on in the gallery. I was a little disappointed how small the gallery space was though. Nearly £8 seemed a bit much for what it was.
Manor itself is restored to its original state and has little snippets of history worked in.
Attention to detail seems to be missing with 90s lighting fixtures and Tesco like sheet hugging the Sir John Soane mattress. Overall good day trip destination for leaving central London.
P. M.
Wow! Went to visit the newly renovated Pitzhanger Manor. Firstly, the Anish Kapoor exhibition ( on til August) is amazing and then we had a wander around the Manor. So lucky to have this on our doorstep. Ealing residents get free entry all day on a Tuesday and Sunday morning 10-12.
L. d.
So wonderful to see both the Hogarth lithographs and the actual Rake's Progress paintings in this magnificent house. Make sure you always look up as you go through the rooms as the ceilings are stunning.
C. R.
Great to see this has finally opened after a lengthy refurbishment. The house provides an interesting and personal insight into the life and work of John Soane and is family friendly. The building itself is fascinating. The exhibition space is used by artists- this time Anish Kapoor - and the work was beautiful. Free entry to Ealing residents on Tuesdays and Sundays too!
H. I.
It’s under restoration(ongoing, is proper) yet worth visit. Gallery might be a bit small, only one room. Manor is the real gem. Don’t forget to enter through main door ;-)
A. L.
The gallery has just reopened after 3 years of restoration. It is definately looking splendid after being returned to its original design by Sir John Soane.
Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery is currently running its first exhibition by Anish Kapoor which runs from the 16th March till 18th August 2019.

Great new Gallery space in Sir John Diane's old summer mansion. Enjoyed the Kapoor exhibition with mind boggling optical illusions.
A. T.
Beautiful space! The Kapoor exhibition is mind bending, and shows off the light and space exquisitely. The manor is gorgeous too.
N. T.
What a fantastic house and gallery.
The gallery is small, with exhibitions carefully arranged across one and a half rooms.
The house is a wonderful walk through another time over several floors.
All restoration looks faithfully done and is very effective.
N. A.
Delightful. This is a beautiful little manor with lush gardens. You could spend a whole lazy day here! Perfect for those with an eye for architecture as it's a Soane classic, and intriguing for those who want to know a little more about the man himself.
j. b.
Grade I Listed rural retreat of preeminent and influential Georgian architect, John Soane, meticulously reconstructed, restored and reinstated.
The unique facade with caryatids and an attractive period garden forecourt, the adjoining gallery, walled garden restaurant and renowned “back yard” garden (now a Park) - all effectively and admirably rehabilitated.
Now serves as a counterpoint to Soane’s renowned Dulwich Park Picture Gallery thereby promoting Ealing as an equally significant suburban “heritage destination.”
Definitely merits a visit.
N. L.
Fascinating if tiny museum recalling Soane, 19th architect, who built this house in the Ealing (then) countryside as a catalogue of his skills. Beautifully restored. Pity the attached restaurant can't quite get its act together
E.
A stunningly restored Sir John Soanes manor house in the heart of Ealing, Walpole Park. The gallery shows a good programme of contemporary art - Ealing residents get a discount 12-2pm Sun. Current showing an installation be ES Devlin.
M. C.
Very well executed restoration!
Enjoyed openeday's free access.
Staff very helpful and food in the Restaurant was excellent and very reasonable.
S.
Interesting place to visit. Hands on activities to view history.
l. a.
Lovely space and setting. They also host experientially rich occasional events for children.
M. C.
A nice place for a quick visit. Shame the top floor is off-access (offices apparently).
H. W.
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The staff incredibly helpful and patient. I very much valued the spontaneous tour one of the guides gave us showing us the hidden details of Hogarth’s fascinating paintings, so many of which I would not have spotted. We’ll definitely visit again after lockdown.
A. J.
Great new exhibition space with lots of light. The garden is also very nice.
H. C. M. A.
Interactive exhibition going on currently. Organisers have put some exhibits for general public to enjoy. However, the entry to museum is payable unless you are a member.
T. L.
Good to see them break the mould with an exhibition from Bollo youth centre on race, class and identify.
C.
Love this space. Interesting historical landmark with great exhibitions and events, with beautiful gardens and fantastic coffee venue in the park too.
R. C.
Once Ealing library, now a gallery space and lovely restoration of John Soane's country house backing on to Walpole park and so a bit more believable as a country retreat.
R. S.
Beautiful restoration work, truth be told. For me, personally, the star of the show is the adjoining gallery which has stunning exhibitions on. The Es Devlin exhibition has been done so excellently despite the small exhibition space.
Staff are friendly and ticket prices are fair with a great offer for Ealing residents in particular. I would definitely recommend a visit to the Gallery.
K. N.
Cool gallery space with lots of interesting exhibitions.
C. P.
A lovely house, designed and lived in by Sir John Soane, collector and architect. Spectacular ceilings. Very clever sound effects in the dining room. Great chance currently to see Hogarh's Rakes Progress.
I. B.
This was my Granddaughter's description of this beautifully restored mansion. It had most of the rooms mentioned in the board game, all well presented so that a child's imagination could run wild. Visited the manor and the gallery on a sunny evening. Beautifully restored, it is a little gem in London
C. H.
We visited Dinosaur Safari with our 8 and 6 year old children and had a fantastic morning. The course is fun, well kept and just challenging enough for the whole family... and the kids loved the dinosaurs.Great fun afternoon. Clean, quirky, good value. Even my youngest was able to manage the course. We will definitely be back!
S. F.
The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Nice little shop too! Had a great afternoon - thank you! This was my Granddaughter's description of this beautifully restored mansion. It had most of the rooms mentioned in the board game, all well presented so that a child's imagination could run wild. It was sad that its owner
L. M.
Splendid architectural showcase as conceived by the great mind of Mr Soane. Every three or so months they have a custom artwork showcase by leaders in the architectural and design industry like Es Devlin, so look out for those as well, as they can often be quite exhilarating to view, and greatly enhance your overall experience at The Gallery.
Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates craft.
A. K.
An absolute pleasure to explore this mansion. This place has incredible historic value. The residence of the architect who designed The Bank of England. An excellent day out for the family. It takes you back in time and I am fortunate to live close by.
J. Y.
Pitzhanger Manor has just re-opened following an extensive restoration and it is beautiful! The ceilings are wonderful and the conservatory overlooking Walpole Park is absolutely fantastic. How I wish I had room for something similar at home… The Anish Kapoor temporary exhibition is fascinating - a series of mirrored structures that look attractive enough at first glance but on closer inspection are like a really clever hall of mirrors for adults. One was just like the opening sequence of a James Bond movie. When we went, on a Tuesday morning "residents free" session, nearly all the visitors were middle aged or older but we were all enjoying ourselves with the mirrors as if we were 7. I had a 16 month-old with me who was equally enchanted.
M. B.
Beautifully refurbished
Delightful house set in park
B. W.
Lovely museum not far from Ealing Broadway. The former country home of Sir John Soane is an homage to his work and a good venue for art expos. Worth the trip if you are interested in architecture, although keep in mind it is not the biggest museum and you can navigate this pretty quickly.
G. C.
A wonderful job has been carried out to restore Pitzhanger manor to its former glory. It looks as sparkling as the day John Soane, leading architect of his day, moved in. The Anish Kapoor exhibition was incredible and a visit to the house and park really enjoyable. The restoration of this beautiful house is well worth a visit. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable.
R. E.
Fantastic experience. Incredible restoration of old house, finite in detail; table cloth embroidered place settings! House set in Walpole Park which is also worth walking around. Take a cuppa while in the park at the small cafe and take a peek at the bee hive, behind glass. Exhibition in the gallery was amazing; Anish Kapoor
L. H.
Visited here since it has reopened after renovations and the art installations have been great. The house is also very interesting to walk around and discover, and each room has something small for kids. We got lucky too as we happened to visit on a Tuesday when it's free for Ealing residents.
S. H.
Great restoration, well worth the visit. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff
C. L.
Beautiful venue, restoration is magnificent. Gardens are well planted. Shame no vegan option in the cafe which meant we couldn't eat there but all in all a wonderful addition to Ealing.
R. P.
The building has been nicely restored. There are some innovative ways of communicating information, however the rooms are largely empty at present
The gardens are worth a quick wander.
A. P.
What a fascinating place. We loved the talking table that provides an excellent insight into Soane's domestic life and social networks. Oh how wonderful it would be to have some of the things that were originally there returned even if just for a loan exhibition. (Isn't that what Sir John would have wanted if he knew that the Manor is now another monument to his memory, regardless of what his will decrees for the Soane Museum in Lincoln's Inn Fields?) And we loved the Anish Kapoor exhibition in the gallery. A great new start for the Manor, complete with stylish cafes, and I hope you can keep up this high standard. Ealing is very lucky!
B. T.
Went for the Anish Kapoor exhibition, but ended up exploring the manor and gardens. Major restoration works have brought John Soane's architectural vision back to life. The rear storey conservatory, was a particular highlight. Take stroll through the gardens and park too.
A. E.
Small but amazing Anish Kapoor exhibition
T. B.
House still undergoing some renovation. Enjoyable visit but disappointing that so little of Soane's collection on site.
M. S.
The Anish Kapoor exhibition - ending August 18th 2019 is small but truly stunning ! Well worth it. They wouldn't say as yet who is next.
The manor is a bit bare though the tablecloth is fun and interesting. That with extracts from the Soanes' books gives you a little bit of feel of their lives and the times.
The park is lovely ! Play area, big trees some foreign, lake, kitchen garden, fountains.
We ate at The Pantry, outdoor seating, the most delicious toasted panini I've ever eaten ! Friend said normal bread toasty was equally good. Fresh orange juice really delicious too. We looked but didn't try the bigger restaurant - food looked good and is very reasonably priced. By The Pantry there is a beehive that you can look inside of - fabulous !
S. C.
Wow wow and wow! What a difference to the way it was. A must see if interested in architecture. From the house, the gardens are spectacular. Ealing is becoming a destination to spend time. Well done to everyone involved.
C. B.
Wonderful museum and gallery. Free for Ealing residents on Tuesdays and discounted other days.
Well worth the entrance fee if you don’t live in the borough.
J. J.
Attended a wedding here , lovely setting.
J. S.
Take your time in this Anish Kapoor exhibition which plays with light, reflection and refraction
K. L.
Worth a visit if you are an Ealing resident. Hidden gem.
p. c.
The gallery is fantastic, we went to visit for the Anish Kapoor exhibition. A wonderful afternoon, lovely grounds - overall a very pleasant experience.
Q. P.
Beautiful recently restored country house and art gallery in centre of Ealing
C. G.
Nice exhibitions - always enjoy visiting
B. H.
Lovely building well preserved good signage. Discount for Seniors on Wednesdays beside super free park well maintained. An oasis in Ealing broadway. Near high street 5-10 mins walk from Station. Forget about restaurant plenty of places to eat in Town. No displayed menu for prices/range, disinterested staff waited 5 mins for menu only a handful of customers. Try cafe around corner on a good day friendly helpful & attentive.
H. B.
Pitzhanger Manor Exhibition ES Devlin - a must see.
Make sure you know its an historical sequence from left to right before entering. It's a wow experience when you 1st walk in. Go out, buy the map (£2), study for 5minsl and try and get to view again. Its a gradual process so take your time. 5 stars.
P. F.
Stunning house! Definitely worth the visit.
Y. M. -. J. Y.
One of the beautiful parks in West London.
S. P.
Neoclassical architect Sir John Soane's other home. It has just re-opened after a major 3 year restoration. An inappropriate extension has been removed and many Soane features have been reinstated such as the conservatory. His other home can be found at WC2A 3BP , which is an 8.6 mile walk taking about 3 hours. Soane enjoyed this walk. You can save a bit of time with a 27 minute tube journey instead!
B. C.
Recently been renovated. A pleasant way to spend a few hours, plus the adjacent Walpole Park. On a sunny day a great place to bring the children.
P. M.
Wonderful work on the building restoration. Enjoyed the London Voices and wonderful to be able to go free as a local rate Payer.
S. S.
Really interesting history, enjoyed our time here.
S. H.
Very interesting museum. Worth visiting John Soane's house in Central London. Fascinating life and history.
G. L.
A Gem in Ealing ,s Crown.A Must See historic Building
D. N.
The manor house is a fantastic building, but really needs the council (who own it) to do something with it as it has the feel of a council owned building. The gardens/park has had a lot of investment in the last couple of years which was needed, which has been well executed.
D. T.
Relaxing and strikingly original house. Interesting sculpture exhibition
R. G.
Currently an exhibition of Anish Kapoor items. House rather empty as most furniture is at the Sir John Soane museum in London. Gardens nice.
1. H.
