A simple and even shabby set of rooms which transform themselves into musical magic. The magical soft acoustic in the performing space upstairs allowed us to hear every note like a raindrop.
So make sure you attend a concert here, like in their annual Festival. You'll get to thank the peeling, mildewed walls!

We were here running a paranormal event. Easy to find, friendly and helpful staff, parking is limited during the day but after hours and weekends is fine, the building itself is full of local history. All in all not a bad venue.

Amazing to find out how a man's dream to bring education to all children in a time of darkness, shows that limitations are just in one's own mind.

Great little trip for the young ones and mrs.perkins class is a great experience.
P. S.
Short and sweet, people who were working there are very knowledgeable, volunteer youth seemed more interested in their phones!

Love it hear, I couldn't keep a straight face during the classroom session. The children loved it and were fascinated by the differences there is to today's learning. The household session was an eye opener for us all not only the children but for us the adult as well. Will visit again soon loved it.

There are lots of cool places here, and the workshops for schools are amazing! There are very insresting things, including what the Victorian houses were like. The people are lovely and funny and the rooms look very realistic. Great museum!

Excellent place to learn how life was like for the children of East End during Victoria times. Especially in regards to education.

Really enjoyed my visit here. The exhibition is informative and well-designed. The interactive and intriguing victorian lesson is definitely the highlight. It's a great learning experience for both parents and children. (personally, I think it's most beneficial to children aged 6-12).
I would suggest all teachers, educational researchers, and history enthusiasts come and experience the neighbourhood. You are going to be amazed at how vividly history can be presented and experienced.
Bring some cash if you would like to make a donation to support the museum or buy some souvenirs from the gift shop, as card machine is not available here.

A great place with a lot of history with activities for children.

I visited during the free summer holiday activity weeks and fell in love with this place. There are only a few members of staff and a lot of volunteers keeping this unique venue open. Some of the volunteers have been there for many years but they still love the place and still enjoy showing someone new the delights. There are four floors to explore with a local history museum on the ground floor, a Victorian classroom plus the Art Room on the first floor and the top floor has a kitchen where children can try and beat a rug, peg washing on a line, etc. The basement has a cafe that opens onto the Regent's Canal and a large soft play room for younger visitors. I visit a lot of museums that profess to be child-friendly but this place wins hands-down and I can't wait to go back. School visits have the run of the place during the week but the museum opens to the public for the Victorian school classroom experience on the first Sunday of the month.

The Ragged School Museum is a nice place to visit as you get to see how schools were in the Victorian times.
There are clothes at the near the stairs which you can try and there is a tea bar at the basement but there wasn't anyone around to serve drinks.

Victorian lesson - very interesting and funny, not only for kids

This hidden gem is a must to visit. It offers a unique glimpse into the Victorian's ragged school environment. It is wonderfully located, sandwiched between the Regents Canal and Mile End Park and is only a short walk from mile end station. It has a tea shop too. Be sure to check the museum's opening times before visiting as they are quite restricted.

Lovely off the beaten track attraction. Gives an insight in the history of the area and of schooling in times of extreme poverty. There is a replica classroom and offers a real life teaching experience with teachers dressed like in the old days. I didn't attend the class, but I would suppose it will be real fun for parents with children. The staff is really passionate and devoted, it was a pleasure chatting with them. The ground floor contains an interesting display of the history of east and south east London. It also features a very cute little coffee shop. I would definitely go again sometime, hopefully I will find some friends with kids to have a good excuse to attend the class :-)

A little piece of life of people in East London the museum is not very big but provides a very large amount of documents and every day objects and give you the idea of how the life was. The Ragged school started to provide for an education to poor people sometimes enticing them with free meals. You can see how the stubborness of a person can lead to good deem taking people away from the assisted circle of orphanage and charities.
You can leave a free offer and they really look for voluntaries if you wish to help.

This is a great place to bring young children for a little trip out. When I had young relatives staying, we took them here. Firstly it is free, which is great, and the staff are very good with children and get them involved telling them stories etc. Worth a visit.

Wonderful experience for 10 yr olds who are studying the Victorian era in school. The museum, itself, isn't much more than a classroom and a small replica of a kitchen. It is the volunteers, however, who bring the place to life. I wish I could remember his name...I want to say 'Ray', who not only described the school and Dr Barnardo, but talked about his own childhood. The girls were rivetted. And these girls rarely put down their iPads. They're still using the slates we bought.
The cafe is rudimentary but they do a decent cuppa.

Understandably the building was freezing. The children were shivering however the acts are outstanding! The class experience was the best. Thank you

Transformed back to a dark, naive but well meaning past. An insight into the development of the British Educational system, very informative. The staff are very helpful.

Ok. Young kids occupied for 1hr. Building is a bit run down. Having Mile End park opposite helps.
Underfunded and undervalued as a historical/educational facility.

Fantastic experience for children to understand Victorian times. The classroom immersion is amazing.

Best place ever! Staff and volunteering are so friendly, this is such an underrated place; every time I go, I always have the time of my life. Wish they opened more often.

Very interesting and well worth a visit. Even if it's pouring with rain. Short on places to eat in the area.

A great little museum showcasing East End poverty in the last few centuries.
Limited opening times.
Combine with a walk along the Canal from Limehouse to Hackney.

Always good to get a perspective on how far we have come and yet child poverty still persists. Thank goodness for charities like Dr Barnardo.

I went there on a school trip and the was ok but strict also I discovered that the teacher's name is mrs perkins but that is not the amzing fact mrs perkin used to teach the class when she was younger.
