Reviews of The Clink Prison Museum
C. F.
A must place to visit. A dark piece of history. Place of horror, tortured and starvation. Even some you're still used today in different part of the world.
Good price too. £6.00.
At the end you are given 10 multi-choice questions. Got to get at least 9 questions right, otherwise they won't let you out. Free photo in the clink on line.

Was a random find while walking along the South Bank, and was very enjoyable and informative..... ended up spending about 2 hours. Very reasonably priced too. Staff were very nice and helpful. Overall very pleased, and definitely worth a visit!
L. S.
Very interesting experience, we spent an hour read through the prison history and we enjoyed it.
D. A. M.
An interesting to place. The closest tube station in London Bridge just a few minutes walk. The experience is nice even though the visit is quite short. The Clink is a prison that operated from 12th century till the end of 18th century. You can see how the prisoners lived. Maybe not the best place to visit for persons who don't really like dark spaces. Tickets can be bought online or at the entrance.
T. M.
Fantastic museum and really worth the reasonable price to get in. There are a huge number of exhibits to see and the placards with facts and information were very interesting. We stumbled across this museum and I'm so glad we did it was one of the highlights of the trip.
V. C.
Small museum but very interesting with reasonably cheap tickets. It's all about medieval torture so great for older children or teenagers.
There is a lot of reading and not so much interaction but all very interesting nevertheless! Id say you'd get about an hour at best.. Highly recommend if you're are in the area.
You also get a free photo at the end of the tour...ps the door is a pull not push. I thought I was locked on the booth and panicked..was calling for help and they guy came and said to pull the door!!! Eeekk the embarrassment

The Clink Prison dates back to 1144 making it one of England’s oldest and most notorious prisons. Positioned in the heart of modern-day Southwark and built on the original site, The Clink Prison Museum presents the scandalous truth of Old Bankside through a hands-on educational experience. There are opportunities to view archaeological artefacts, experience the sights, sounds and smells of the prison, handle torture devices, and to view and hear all about the tales of torment and many misfortunes of the inmates of the infamous Clink Prison.
Q. K.
Interesting little place on your way to London bridge. Liked it seeing its interactive and you can go along your own pace.
R. B. H.
Amazing, lovely, Fab and Cute little gift shop in a small museum. Nice friendly, and helpful staff with reasonable prices. Lots to read and great historical torture devices can see in side. Good for the young kids.
You can take the free photos. Open until late night.
R. R.
Good very detailed pictures and figures, different items used in the prison back then. Opportunity to touch and see people. Old torture methods. Reasonable price .
S. D.
The family ticket is good value, relative to similar attractions. It's fairly small but informative. No jump scares. You walk around and read plaques and look at torture equipment. There are some wax works of prisoners. It's interesting enough, just not particularly stand out. There are other attractions around like the Golden Hinde and the Palace of Winchester so worth doing if you're in the area.
J. E.
This is a great little museum thats well worth a visit. Modest in size with well presented exhibits that takes an hour to go around. A small part of Londons great history and for its size and exhibits should not be ignored for those who like the gory side of History. Reasonably priced and fits in well with the bigger attractions.
J. O.
A hidden gem to take a step back in time to learn about this London Prison! Great value for money in the heart of Central London!
If you find this place just pop in!!
The free prison photo at the end is a cool bonus!
P. H.
Very reasonably priced attraction. Some interaction with handcuffs etc. Plenty of posters to share the knowledge of how criminals and God botherers should be treated!
M. A. M.
A small, fully packed museum with so much interest. A great insight to the olden day tortured, great for adults and kids, although small children may be slightly scared at some of the exhibits. It was perfect for 11 year old boys! Very quiet and a great central location, we were there around an hour.
D. M.
Nice place to visit but it's not a big attraction and not much to see & do..
M. M.
Amazingly I was the only one there during my visit today, but I'm sure will be busier during half term week.
I wouldn't come just to see this attraction, I did as an add on to visting the Shard nearby. There's only a part of one wall left of the original prison, but the rooms have lots of information boards and a fair number of exhibits. One of the more unusual exhibits is the copy of Cromwells death mask. I think kids will love the touch screen exhibit which details all the different types of torture during those times. Pretty gruesome.
G. J.
Good museum and £8 may not sound a lot these days but I feel there could be a bit more to it

Detailed museum of medieval life in London prison.
The Clink was a prison in Southwark, England, which operated from the 12th century until 1780. The prison served the Liberty of the Clink, a local manor area owned by the Bishop of Winchester rather than by the reigning monarch. As the Liberty owner, the Bishop kept all revenues from the Clink Liberty, and could put people in prison for failing to make their payments. As the Bishop, he could also imprison heretics. The Clink prison was situated next to the Bishop's London-area residence of Winchester Palace. The Clink was possibly the oldest men's prison and probably the oldest women's prison in England.
It is uncertain whether the prison derived its name from, or bestowed it on, the Liberty that it served. The origins of the name "The Clink" are possibly onomatopoeic, deriving from the sound of striking metal as the prison's doors were bolted, or the rattling of the chains the prisoners wore.
There has been a prison owned by the Bishop of Winchester in one form or another since the year 860.
B. F.
We had a fascinating experience at the clink.Very interesting and atmospheric museum with sets of period situations you would have found at the time with actual instruments of imprisonment and torture.Great little museum and well worth the entrance fee.
M. B.
Fairly small, but LOTS of interesting information, replicas, pictures and more. Shows the morbid part of London's history (not a place for very young kids, but good for education). Well worth a visit. Good value for the ticket price.
J. C.
Small museum with lots of things packed in showing all the different medieval torture that prisoners were put through
C. Y. C.
Historical prison! An awesome little museum, lots to read and very interesting.
D. W.
Brilliant and informative little museum. Lots of facts that I was totally unaware of, especially the Winchester Geese
D. W.
The Clink was great, very interesting and we had fun taking photos.
M. E.
An awesome little museum, lots to read and very interesting.
E. W.
I almost didn't go in because Rick Steves the travel writer wasn't very impressed, but due to having plenty of time, I visited. It was a little amateurish but had some interesting information and displays with period equipment. I would say it is definitely not a must-do, but only if you have extra time and inclination.
P. H.
Very small but really interesting. Loved it!!
P. M.
Excellent weekend out option for everyone. Loads of historical facts and tales about this notorious medieval prison. Highly recommended.
R. R.
Some interesting facts and artifacts and models but a small attraction and only took half an hour.
C. O.
Great museum! Interactive!
R. F.
If your a fan of the more ghoulish and gruesome side of history then this might be the place for you. If you have been to the London dungeons or the London bridge experience this is the same type of history (minus the live actors) and should be to your taste.
As this is set in the original prison it has plenty of atmosphere and is able to show many of the torture devices that were used (a surprising amount were hands on as well).
It is a self guided tour and should take about an hour and at only £8 per adult is reasonable priced for London.
Beware as it is an old building it is in no way disabled friendly.
E.
Really enjoyed my visit, I learnt alot of stuff and I would definitely recommend visiting.
L.
The exhibition is ok each had a storyline to take you back and lifestyle. The exhibition is only 5 to 10mins long if you're interested in reading it would take 30mins the price of entry is too high for the limit time customer of the host was not great
d. h.
If you have 30 minutes to an hour to kill in London while waiting for the rain to stop, then this could be the right place to go. Family ticket would be more advantageous (2 adults + 2 kids)
R. M.
The Clink is such a fascinating place to go, it is built on the site of the original jail which was built in the 12th century and operated up until 1780 when it was burnt to the ground. It is believed to be the oldest prison in England and held both male and female prisoners for a vast array of crimes. The musuem itself delves deep into the history of the people who built it, those that ran it and the very prisoners themselves. Lots of informative displays and interactive exhibits await those who dare to enter! It is very cheap and quite a short journey but well worth the visit. Note that there is no on-sight toilet or disabled access, though there are several restaurants and cafes nearby.
S. H.
A great experience for 1-2 hours. Really interesting for both the children and adults. My 12 year old loved it!
S. G.
Brilliant museum. Loads to see and lots of information boards explaining what the prison was like and the prisioners held. Well worth a visit.
G. S.
Fun experience. A little dated but certainly worth the fee to enter.
I. L.
We were surprised it was open. We were just wandering around and they were part of the few places that were open just after easing restrictions on July 4th. We visited the following week. It was a good visit and we learned a lot about the place's history and the prisoners they kept. Very interesting. Would have given 5 stars but it was way too warm inside.
W. C.
Not the cheapest but well worth a visit to England’s oldest prison.
K. P.
Great and informative place to visit.. learn all about the early days of prison.
S. D.
It was an interesting and interactive museum. Quite small and pricey but had an enjoyable time.
A. J.
A little hidden gem in the Southbank of London
Its small but unique. I read everything, tried everything I could and spent 1 hour inside.
The entrance is very nice. You need to ring the bell. It is presented like how it was actually in the past.
You can learn a bit about Southwark history and the ways they tortured poor victims.
I can tell you people were sick in that time too.
A. S.
Another small museum that will only take about an hour of your time, but it gives a great insight in to London life in years gone by.
H. H.
So the London Dungeon is too expensive......try the clink instead. Great price with all the horrors of London to see in a small space. Not too scary depending on your disposition but great to take kids. Recommend to make a day of it you visit the Golden Hinde around the corner too. Average time spent here 50 minutes max.
A. J.
Excellent place, very educational and staff were very friendly.
C. S.
Quite a harrowing history story about what happened those many years ago while criminals were incarcerated in the Clink. However, a very detailed account was provided about when who what and why people were subjected to face such punishment under a regime that was fraught with rigidity. Not much of a service experience and was given slips to go on a particular site with a password to retrieve pictures taken at the Clink venue so far the site has not allowed this to happen due to it having problems.
K. M.
Not the biggest or best museum I've ever been to but nonetheless definitely worth a visit
a. s.
At £8 each i expected more, quite a short experience (half an hour)... The torture techniques were interesting but the rest was a bit boring...
A. L.
Very enjoyable, you can go at your own pace on a self-guided tour. Very informative as well. It was a great choice and I'm really glad I got a chance to visit!
P.
Very informative and spooky! Had lots of unusual things like torture items and historical bits and bobs. Wasn't very big or long but still good!
F.
Wonderful museum, friendly staff. Lots to read and incredible artefacts part of the Clink Prison history. Smaller than expected but still a pleasant addition if you want to explore more of London's more gruesome history.
M. O.
Small museum. Not really suitable for younger children as you need to read about the history of it, provided to you as you walk round. A few interesting items to see.
N. S.
Though small, this museum would interest those who enjoy the darker sides of history such as the world of early crimes, prison systems, torture and death.
You would take about an hour to 1.5hrs to finish your round in the museum if you read each and every exhibit.
The Clink museum has an air of sadness to it and would make you question the quality of life in the past as well as appreciate the less hideous governmental systems present in modern developed societies.
Overall, its worth your time if you have half an afternoon to spare and if you love the darker histories of mankind.
L. F.
This was an awesome little gem. Great little bits of history for your average person to consume. Very entertaining
M. J.
Great interesting museum, fun for all the family, highly recommend a visit, staff are welcoming and friendly.
C.
Great museum that peaked both my interest in history and true crime!
Spooky and weird! No wheelchair/pram access though.
J. B.
This museum was interesting. Had a lot of history of places in London in medieval times. There was a plaque on the wall where you could get your medieval name.
L. C.
Not a bad museum if you enjoy as bit of history. I personally find the £7.50 entry fee justifiable where students or concessions pay £5.50
Tucked away under a burger bar on clink street before the tunnel so I hadn't noticed it before.
Interactive displays were great!
J.
Fantastic and only £7 entry fee. Really interesting and you can spend as much or as little time in there as you want. We had fun in the end taking loads of free pictures behind bars.
K.
Great place to spend time, not many things to do with small kid but fun anyways
J. C.
Such an amazing albeit quite gruesome part of our history of prisons. Thoroughly enjoyed reading all the history of this very old prison which survived 600 years! Amazing value at just 7.50 an adult, you also get a downloadable photo thrown into the bargain too!!! Don't miss this little treat on the southbank near London bridge!
A. g.
Not overly impressed , tbh 😕. I suppose for the money (£8.50) it was ok and you get a free photo of yourself behind bars, at the end . 😆
J. J. (.
Interesting attraction, really interesting museum. Highly recommend to anyone!
M. A.
It's a quick tour. You could be done in a half hour or take more time reading through every piece of trivia on the walls..
The attends did also say you could try out some of instruments, like the shackles and so on.
M. M.
Inexpensive and interesting. Had to play by grown up rules counting rats but proud we won our lollies! Friendly and fun
M. C.
If you wanted to see how depraved and insane medieval London was, this place makes you realise The Sun might be on to something when it says prisoners have it easy now.
Good layout, fascinating artefacts and you can get hands on with torture equipment. Awesome. Dark enough to be creepy, incredible sound effects and not TOO scary (if the entrance put ya off). Great for education or just to keep smaller people busy for a bit. You could easily kill an hour in here as part of a walk around London and I highly recommend it.
S. W.
This was a fun way to kill 45 minutes. A little museum with lots to read about and some fun interactive stuff for the kids. Gory and rather gruesome, it tells the story of the old Gaol and particularly the medieval torture methods used 😳
Y. A.
Great historical experience of London. Such an informative experience and a great focus on social history.
L. P.
Nice museum really worth to see, reasonable price to get in.
E. L.
A very interactive look at history and the dark past of London life. Certainly interesting for kids and a bit sobering for adults, but my husband and I had a great time.
R. C.
I had been informed that this museum was the best in london. While it is a decent way to kill around an hour of your time, "the best" certainly isn't how I'd describe. It's just ok. Plenty of information about the history of the site, and a well themed attraction. Drop by if your in the area. Check out my vlog on the clink prison museum at my Kross Travel YouTube channel, I am new to YouTube and still learning the tricks of the trade, be gentle in the comments, I welcome constructive criticism as well 😁
C. B.
Definitely suited for an older child my 8 year old struggled as so much reading. A fascinating experience fun and informative
J. M.
Small but real fun as you can handle everything and lite on the hip pocket. I had a ball there
K. R.
Interesting and fun for all the family! Really well pitched to have lots of information for those interested, as well as plenty of stuff to look at and get interactive with for children. Highly recommended.
P. H.
Only a very small museum but worth the reasonable price. Interesting insight into prison life so many years ago.
B. C.
Worth a look round - quite a small museum but a good supply of information about the old prison.
N. N.
Small but very informative and very lovely staff
S. R.
Very good little adventure, went here by chance and it was great!
R. B.
Its the sort of place to see on a wet afternoon, its has something of a seaside pier about it...an end of the pier attraction...it has some ghoulish aspects to it..that might appeal to small boys..
K. T.
Great place to visit the kids loved it and the staff are very knowledgeable ...
B. O.
Kooky and spooky small museum. Not especially interactive, but interesting and well worth an hour of your time.
A. M. S.
The museum was an amazing surprise and experience. We have stumbled upon it while we were walking and we decided to go in. It looks a bit creepy and I was a bit scared but it is just a museum. The creepiness lies in the history of the place. The offer a free photo inside the museum behind the bars which is really great memory. I totally recommend the visit.
S. J.
We learned so much here! Great museum and you really get a feel of what people might have endured. Horrific times for poor people in London. I would recommend this
R. B.
Small but interesting. Not cheap at £7.50 but not the most expensive place in London by a long way.
R. R.
It was really nice, it looks a bit scary from outside but it ain't that scary as it looks inside. Its a very interesting and fun museum, with soo much useful information. You must have a visit, you will love it. Really enjoyed my visit! Thanks!
S. H.
Well laid out museum takes you through the history of this notorious prison.
M. C.
It was very interesting to read, and see what happened to the prisoners in medieval times.. Bring able to touch and hold the shackles etc was great
j. L.
Small museum of prison. You can find out everything about Londons prison history and famous prisoners. How were they treated, how were they punished and so on.
Its quite small but still nice.
On the end you can take photo's wich you can download online for free. Would recommend.
J. S.
Very educational, but not quite as scary as advertised. A bit depressing!
C. D.
Very interesting mediaeval prison museum close to Thames, ideal for a visit especially as we did to escape the rain!
K. S.
I love this place. It's pretty basic really with old worn dummies but the horrible histories are on point. Fascinating place
M. R.
Small museum with interesting facts and details of the tortures used during the medieval period. Educational and informative for kids.
j. o.
I took with me a 8 year old and he had so much fun! From his perspective the historical part of the visit was great, but "the mouse hunting game" made the whole adventure much more interesting! An interesting place to take your children to!
P. D. s.
You need to know about the history if the prison first !!
H. B.
Interesting place but felt crammed in. Would be better if less people are in at any one time.
H. K.
Hmm...
lots of interesting story and nice staff
but.... old and not enough to enjoy
D. N.
Our son visited The Clink and loved it so much
that he asked us ,his parents to go with him.
We loved it too.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
It was very well presented and so much information to hand and a great atmosphere.
We lost our guide book when moving and the
lady there very kindly sent us another one
Thank you.
L.
Lovely place to take the older kids. It's not very big but it's great value for money. You can touch and take pictures of the various equipment and you can even get a free downloadable picture of you behind bars at the end. The kids enjoyed it - youngest 9 and oldest 14.
L. G.
Although it's quite small, I found it a very enjoyable experience. I liked how they set it out to look a lot like it used to and it was good how you can pick up and handle many of the torture devices. My two kids really enjoyed it as well and surprisingly they weren't scared of it like we thought they would like the London dungeon.
J. M. o. D.
Great fun, if you like creepy stuff (and I do!). We were greeted by a sweetheart with the best London accent we came across. The walk through the dungeon areas is gruesome. Oddly enough, there are no age limits, but unless your kid is a bit weird, you might want to keep them out.
M. P.
Absolutely incredible place... so interesting and informative. Reasonably priced as well, would completely recommend!
D. L.
We didn't intend to go, but whilst walking through the area, it caught my sisters eye (history student) and wanted to go in. It was me, her, her two kids, and my partner. The man at the desk was very polite to us all at the beginning and at the end with a mini history lesson for the kids. The exhibits are great, loads of hands-on to get a real feel for history of ye olde england and its utter cruelty! I left having learnt things I never knew happened, it's a must for all.
m. f.
Very interesting place and well worth a visit very nice staff and the kids had fun and got a lollipop at the end thanks.
J. V.
Nice museum very well priced
C. C. L. M.
Is informative but I do feel it is overpriced and only expect to spend 30 mins top in there. Paid 50p for my daughter to do a quiz round the museum she got all the answers right and was awarded with a tacky lollipop. A pen, pencil or notepad might be better. Felt rather flat and disappointed when I came out. Did learn some interesting facts and parts were fascinating so not all bad.
J. W.
I had a blast here! I read through a lot of reviews that made me skeptical on visiting, but I'm glad I did. There is a lot of reading to do if you want to learn anything, but it's pretty neat history. I went closer to the end of the day and wish I had a little bit more time to spend. The staff was very friendly and didn't seem to be bothered that we were there until after they had closed.
S. I.
An interesting little museum, smaller than I was expecting but it’s not expensive to get in. On that note however, I bought my tickets in advance from their website thinking it would be at least the same or cheaper than buying on the door. However I was charged 50p per tickets booking fee which actually made it more expensive, and totally unnecessary (I don’t think it gives you any kind of fast track entry, we still had to queue up behind paying visitors). Wasn’t too bothered but it’s something to bear in mind.
Staff really friendly and helpful.
K. D.
The history here is very interesting and worth at least reading about. The presentation of the history however is very odd and cheesy. It's very "London dungeons" and borders on disrespectful to those who experienced the torture and ultimately lost their lives in the prison. It's sad to see it done in this manner as it could be presented in a much better way.
l. t.
Absolutely amazing! Would 100% recomend to anyone! Great staff. The lady who was there was really friendly and kind! We only went yesterday and I want to go back already! Totally worth the money as well.
C. I. R.
Inexpensive yet amazing entertainment. Close to market and underground station. Full of diversion and historical significance
S. W.
Fabulous atmosphere! An informative and interactive visit loved by all the family. We had the opportunity to pick up/explore/photograph branding irons/ shackles/stocks/ torture chair and prison cell etc and the experience should not be missed.
Entrance to the prison is by descending steps making it unsuitable for people with no/ limited mobility. The venue doesn't have toilets or refreshments but the Anchor pub is nearby, in itself a great historical history, so lack of amenities within the prison shouldn't deter you from visiting.
B.
A brilliantly interactive and fairly small museum that will delight kids - especially fans of horrible histories. Some grim detail included, mannequins aplenty and lots of photo ops with torture equipment etc. Not wheelchair accessible.
A. R.
Chanced across this plate, nice way to spend 45 minutes, good value, 12 year old child enjoyed it too.
A. H.
Great little experience, lovey visit with so much information of its gruesome history.
G. C.
Interesting exhibits and information boards. Quite a small museum but gives an idea of how bad conditions would have been for prisoners! Worth a visit for an hour. £7.50 entry fee seems a bit steep hence the four stars...
S. M.
It was cool because we got to see replicas of torture weapons, but other than that, the whole visit was just reading signs. Which for me was a little dissapointing since I'm not a big fan of reading, still learnt quite a bit though. Oh and the rooms are fairly small and could get crowded very fast.
D. P.
If you love dark history and kitsch, this is a museum for you. Be prepared to actually read the signs otherwise you might be disappointed. I was dismayed by how many people walked through and didn’t bother to read. The information painted a sad picture of the life of prisoners and debtors. It was all very informative (as well as creepy as hell). My teen daughter and I spent a good ten minutes on the touch screen about torture methods throughout history - Grusomely fascinating. You can touch and mess with all the torture and imprisonment devices. When are you ever going to get to pick up a 9kg sword and compare to an 18kg sword. It’s a small museum, which costs only 7 pounds for adults. Don’t go in expecting the Tower of London. If you have the London Pass, it’s included and well worth an hour or so. Probably not great for little kids but good for the 10-14 year olds, especially those keen on history.
J. W.
Absolutely superb! We went to the market porter pub in Borough market to watch the football and had promised to take our young daughter to the clink museum after. We all had a great time. Really interesting and reasonably priced. Well worth a visit.
M. W. (.
Small interesting place with lots of information about what it was like to be a prisoner, from day to day life to torture.
Lots of hands on stuff, but it is very small, if you don't take your time you could get through it in less than half an hour. Some quite gruesome things, so might want to consider taking really young children.
C. R.
We enjoyed this and so did the boys who are 8 to 11 years old. It's gruesome without being gory. It's not going to take up more than an hour or so but if you're in the area and the kids are interested in that period of history it's good. Think Horrible Histories.
D. N.
Great value , set in a great location it’s a great way to spend an hours learning about the history of the clink prison
M. S.
Fine spot for about 30 minutes of exploring, about as expected and likely especially fun for light amounts of history and anyone interested in prisons and torture. Not super in depth but enjoyable and good to get out of the sun for a bit.
W. C.
A lovely 'light hearted' museum full of torture and historical gore. We took our teenager there to compliment her GCSE history course. We were round it in about 90 minutes and even our usual sulky teenager was amused.
D. W.
Reasonable priced museum to visit filled with lots of infomation and detail of what happened back in the day with lots of scenes from prisoners and the scowler they lived in. A must if your in the area of Borough Market and a 5min walk from The Shard building.
E. H.
Small but perfectly formed; very informative and fascinating look at the underbelly of London life back in the day
A. O.
This museum is far underrated and is truly a hidden gem in London. If you come up to London by train you do qualify for the 2-for-1 entry however it is already at a reasonable price. Unlike the dungeon this is a far more educational Museum about how prisons worked in history. The museum only takes you about an hour to get through but it is completely packed with information.
M.
was really good but we completed it very quickly
K. M.
small place but full of history..
T. B.
Happened upon this place while walking along the South Bank. It's not huge, but it was good value and not too busy. Quite educational and all the kids (6-11) were entertained. Free photos from in jail is a nice touch.
C. G.
Room was overall nice lighting in bathroom was awful just a few little bits that let it down otherwise overall was nice
J. H.
Really interesting place and it kept the kids horrified/ amused for ages
C. G.
Nice way to kill an hour or two if you are in the area. Not too expensive and you can get two for one with train ticket deal. Lots of information about the history of the prison with a couple of interactive displays. You can get a photo at the end which is nice but you do need to go online to get it.
K. H.
While it's cool to go to for the historic aspect, there isn't much original stuff left here and you can go through it in less than an hour, even reading everything and pondering the various exhibits. I did find it interesting that a space once considered only just big enough for a Victorian era man now has four people in it in our modern prisons. That and the "scold" were the most horrifying parts.
C. S.
The clink prison is a tourist attraction built on the site of the original prison dating back to 1144. It shares the grizzly history of the site and its inmates, mainly through information signs. Though not one of the more modern or interactive exhibits, it’s an interesting place to learn about what London life used to be like for its residents who got on the wrong side of the law.
T. C.
What more could you ask to entertain almost teen boys... Gore, torture and the macabre! Not a huge museum but very atmospheric and the "Gaol Keeper" was one of the best guides I've come across, clearly someone who loves their job! Would highly recommend and under £20 for a family ticket is great value in Central London.
T. F.
I just went to get a souvenir from the gift shop as a gift. The place looked really cool but I did not go in. The gift shop is apparently at the end of the tour so I couldn’t go inside, which made buying something quite difficult, but the man at the front was very helpful. Definitely want to go in next time.
J. M.
It is really small, so if you make a "follow-through" you will be out like in 2 minutes and you will feel you have wasted your money.
In my case, I took my time, read each and every poster, took 100 photos, and really enjoyed it for half an hour. I have gone twice (the second time with my brother).
This is not for everybody, but I do think it is quite good museum.
K. H.
We really enjoyed our visit to The Clink prison museum. Good value for money and packed with interesting facts about The Clink. Torture chamber was fascinating and we learned a lot about prison life through the ages. I would recommend a visit and the free behind bars photo was fun.
S. B.
Set on the site of an old prison, the small museum dedicated the darker side of London's history. There is alot of reading to be done as you walk around, so if you go with children you might want to paraphrase some of the torture methods. Don't miss the free photo as the end (just download from the link) good souvenir
M. B.
Great place for teenagers and older as there is not a vast amount to see but lots to read and learn perfect for my daughters as it ties in with their GCSE crime and punishment history education.
You wont believe how heavy the irons are :) great picture momento at the end free of charge :)
D. C.
The Clink was easy to find and was a really interesting look back at the darker past of London. You can touch all of the torture devices and learn about the story of the place as well as the people that inhabited it. Would highly recommend it!
k. u.
Great museum, very small but very hands on loads of stuff to read and touch
C. M.
My kids loved this as it reminded them of reading "Horrible Histories" when they were younger. Me, I thought it was a bit too heavy on torture and wanton cruelty. Then again, it made me appreciate that even though modern times are far from perfect, we are so much better off than people who lived 500 years ago!
J. P.
Really interesting museum. The kids loved it. Loads of 'hands on' things to do, which makes it quite different from the usual 'do not touch' museums. Great to have a free (digital) photo at the end too - nice touch.
M. P.
Great place off the beaten track. Some fascinating history that you literally get your hands on. Friendly staff who explained things and were great with the children.
Can't recommend Clink highly enough...5 stars!
R. C.
Small but so much fun. I'm glad I found this place. I wasn't looking for it, just so happen to get lost in an alley way and seen it. Very informative.
K. F.
Some neat exhibits. Not for kids, as a good chunk of the exhibit is on torture devices. At the end you get a picture taken behind bars and get a free digitial copy. Several things are touchable or interactive which is nice. Took about an hour to work my way through, seeing everything, but that was slower than most. Wasn't a ton to see. Felt like a tourist trap.
A. C.
Great space to explore! Gruesome enough for young teens and also fascinating. Loved it!
V. N. (.
I don't like walking through museums for hours and that's exactly why I liked this one. If you read everything and look around for a bit you will spend about an hour in here. I thought it was quite interesting and not too scary. Only went in there because we were walking last it and thought : why not? But I'm glad I went in to have a look around.
S.
We really enjoyed our visit today. We'd done London Dungeon in the morning and planned to visit in the afternoon, to complete our gruesome day out. This museum put a bit of meat on the bones of the LD experience which was great but definately goes in the entertainment bracket.
We used a 2 for 1 voucher with a train ticket. So with the kid quiz sheet it was £8 to enter which I feel was about right. As much as we enjoyed it, I'm not sure I'd have been happy paying more than about £10/£12 for us both (adult and 11 year old) and it would have been had we paid full price. That's the reason it's 4 stars from me.
The museum is small and informative, there is a lot of reading but the stories were well laid out and the right length (and gory and gross enough!) to hold our interest. My son enjoyed the quiz sheet and spotting the rats. The exhibits were interesting, lots of torture devices and historical artefacts. I particularly 'enjoyed' the dentists cap complete with real human teeth! There's a tablet giving information about different torture devices. There are maps showing where you are in relation to the original jail. Getting your picture done for free is a nice touch. The staff were really lovely and friendly.
In summary. Don't go expecting LD on the cheap. Do look for offers; from other reviews it sounds like Groupon also have 2 for 1 but it's on the National Rail 2 for 1 until early September 18. I'd probably suggest coupling it up with another museum or tour.
P. C.
Great loved it opened my eyes to how cruel people were then
J. T.
A small museum but a great look at punishment from a less PC time, probably not one for young children.
If you can get on a tour they really bring it to life.
L. F.
It is indeed a good lesson on prisons. But is far too harsh and too telling of real evilness in people for the allowance of children. We regret having taken our 3 and 7 year olds. They not only hated the ambiance, but felt scared. As parents we started on mildly seeing the museum 'till we were too deep in it; considering the information we wanted relaid to our kids. For grown ups, the price could be a little friendlier, just considering that the reviews are right about being a simple and short experience...
M. P.
Great place and well set out
A. B.
A very interesting museum, giving visitors a good feel for what prison life was like a couple of hundred years ago. (Pretty grim).
Reasonable price to enter and a free download photo behind bars included.
M.
Popped into the clink yesterday 27th of Aug. I had been curiuous and felt it was time to satisfy. It cost 7.50 each and they accept cash and card (contactless or pin). Wasn't to impressed after spending 15 quid that the guy thrusts a paper booklet which to be honest look very thin and said 2 pound for a guide book. Anyway I refused and glad I did. I wont leave a spoiler review but give you a overall judgement. Plenty to items to read, overall setting, ok - bit cheap in parts. Kids will like it I suppose. Not worth 7.50 personally, felt it was a little lost, tried to hard on a small budget. It's informative and worth a stroll but 7.50 is far to expensive for what you get. Worth looking around for 2 for 1 tickets etc.
L. L. D.
Very informative museum with lot of hands on experiences on display! It was interesting seeing the history of the various forms of torture
M. K.
A fantastic little scary museum, we loved it.
L. D.
Great education for the children not over priced like many London attractions.
B. R.
A fun hour or so, but not the best museum. With tableaux of prison life, this has a feel of the London Dungeon, but isn't as good. But it's nice to see a museum with real heritage, and kids seem to love it.
R. A.
Another little gem. Tucked away in a passage near the Golden Hinde & Borough Market. Educational & fun and a bit gorey. Great way to spend an hour on a cold January afternoon.
M. B.
It's a very small quirky tourist trap commercial "museum" that will still manage to surprise you with an eclectic selection of stories about then ancient prisons of Clink Street. The history of this street is fascinating. You can get much the same grisly stories at Tower of London. Note: Has slightly more interest in sexual matters than you'd expect from a tourist trap.
I. G.
What better place to have a museum than an actual old prison. Located down a dark alley it welcomes visitors with an old skeleton and iron maiden. The creepiness is enhanced as you descend the dark stairs to the exhibits. A great detour as you walk along the southbank.
V. F.
A great place to visit- not too touristy and great value for money with plenty to keep children engaged. It isn’t the largest of museums but there’s still lots of interesting history and it’s a great location for exploring and visiting other attractions as well.
S. E.
Mildly interesting. A bit run down. The history of the prison is kind of fun. On the other hand, the cost of admission isn't much. If you have time to kill it might be worth doing.
A. C.
It's an interesting place to visit as you will get the opportunity to actually touch some of the tools that were used to hold and/or torture inmates, it kind of bring you back to that time and you can feel what inmates went trough, it's a small museum though but it's worth the time and price.
C. R.
Amazing place, I read everything and learnt so much about the history of the Clink Police Museum. Definitely would return and I was in there for 2 hours as I wanted to experience everything. Highly recommended for adults and children.
g. S.
Lots of history good go
D. R.
Good, atmospheric but short lived. You can however touch everything and it's good fun for 10 year old onwards. My two girls came away with having learnt something about the area and what life in prison back then was like. Worth a quick visit on your way to the Golden Hinde and the Shard.
B. C.
Worth the kitch and the few pounds to get in. You know from the entrance about what you're gonna get. Good stories with maybe a little too much writing. I appreciated the constant wailing sounds as you walk through.
C. C.
Very informative and very interesting to learn about
M.
We loved this place, yes it’s small and not everything is original but it’s educational and informative. The staff were great also. Tried to leave the wife there but they wouldn’t let me.
M. K.
Really great if you've got an hour or or so to kill and are interested in London prison history. Was really entertaining with good props and explanations.
M. A.
The Museum is located in the oldest part of London tucked away in a back street. It's small and dark but is interactive with lots of interesting information panels about its history and that of its prisoners. The selfie photo in the jail at end is funny.
C.
Not a bad price £8 per adult but short and not interactive enough not really changed in many years
J. J.
Spanning for over 600 years, it witnessed a remarkable amount of social and political change in England, and thus housed a multitude of sinners throughout its existence, including debtors, heretics, drunkards, harlots, and later religious adversaries. Positioned in the heart of modern day Southwark, the prison was situated in an area that has long been associated with more raucous, vivacious and unruly behaviour; it was the louder, ruder and wickeder neighbour to The City, and a place where Londoners sought entertainment.

Excellent place to go! I've actually been twice and still really enjoyed it! Great staff, very helpful and friendly.
S. S.
Museum is totally cool. Good displays and hands on. Kids have a mouse hunt game. May be a little much for the faint of heart but I enjoyed it.
L. H.
Very very interesting place with terrific history. Well worth a visit and good value for money. Stumbled across it by accident so maybe more advertising necessary.
A. L.
A fascinating visit to the oldest prison in Britain . Lots to see from the cells to torture implements and the many ways to make it uplesent in prison. There's plenty of information boards about the artifacts with a few you can try out! Lots of information on the various inmates and the conditions they had to live. Great for a family visit - maybe not for the very young and well worth the price (£7.50 adult) . When you visit do get your free photo (downloadable off the internet) from the Clink Cell. Easy to find on Clink Street near London Bridge.
P.
Very nice little museum ! Friendly staff who told to try everything and for same price You can take a picture of yourself behind bars, get it online with the code. Worth the price
S. S.
A little hidden away just past Southwark Cathedral..this was a spontaneous trip but really enjoyable. A good place for kids(not too young) and very eductaional and thoughtful at times too
E. C.
A little disappointed as I was expecting more and thought I'd see more of what the prison looked like. It's full of lots of information to read and lots of tools they used especially how they used to torture prisoners but all in all the experience was soon forgotten.
A. P.
Situated right by the Cutty Sark, this is a little gem of an attraction that not many people are aware of. Ok, its not the London Dungeons but its also not very expensive. It is true to say that there is quite a bit of reading but it is well presented and not as 'hard going' as some other museums. I did learn quite a lot that I didn't from London Dungeons. It took me to a part of London that I probably wouldn't have visited and I liked that too. I also visited The Old Operating Theatre Museum which is a stones throw away and very good value for money. Both can easily be done half a day.
C. F.
Although it is quite a small space, for £7 entry it is a steal! Really interesting insight into London's history and you can go through it at your own pace which is nice.
C. L.
Lot of history in one place, bit small so doesnt last long but lots of things to learn about. Not good for little children or wheelchair users
C. C.
Small museum dedicated to the old prison in Southbank. It's not free, but the fee is pretty small. I had fun, especially with the photo opp at the end.
E. B.
It attempts to theme parts of itself towards kids and parts towards adults - I believe it fails to do so. While the history itself is quite interesting, I believe I would have gotten just as much gratification out of reading the information presented there online.
T. D.
Cheap, and very interesting history, would not want to be living back in that period, thumb's up from me 👍
c. b.
More like something fun to do if you've half an hour spare. Nothing much is original, even the building itself isn't the original building. It's interesting to read about the area though
V. M.
Curious and bizarre, but small.
M. F.
A great gruesome stop during a walk along the southbànk.
L. M.
Kids had a great time seeing all the torture equipment! But was very small. We were done in less than an hour.
B. J.
Great place full of interesting-never knew there was a museum to the history of "English Goal": good that u can touch, and be "tried" for a crime that never existed! Well worth the money
p. -. (.
Super fun! It's not your traditional museum, but it was very informative and had plenty of interactive exhibits.
K. -. A. W. I. R.
Good museum, very small, short and sweet, gives you the feel of what the prison was like and tells you about the history, cheap to enter, great for those that like the more morbid side of London!
T.
A amazing hour walking though the museum the sights of what used to happen is scary
S. B.
Very interesting and historic place. Very small so doesn't take long to go round but you learn lots of interesting facts
S. W.
Infamous historical site offering grimly gruesome fun, facts and frights
What's not to love?
j. m.
Nice bit of fun to have and to learn while walking round London.
N. W.
Was disappointed with The Clink. Great location, but lacked impact inside. If you want a real idea of what Crime and Punishment was like before the 20th Century try the Galleries of Justice in Nottingham
E. P.
Very small exhibition, possibly fun for children.
M. K.
Without a doubt it is a historic place worth visiting only for once. Was drugged there by a friend who is a famous writer and was doing research on London's history. Did leart few fact but could also skip the visit and read it al on the Wikipedia.
D. H.
I never knew about this place we came upon it by chance while strolling the South Bank. A great museum, reasonably priced too. Very entertaining.
M. R.
The artifacts on display were good, giving an insight into the torturous things people did! It took about an hour and a half to see everything at a reasonable pace.
S. G.
A great place to take the kids. Lots of really heavy "hands on stuff" to play with, which makes a change from most venues. Plenty of "horrible" stories to read about while the kids play. Great place*****
N. R.
Clinks are (in my opinion) the best we could possibly hope for in an industry body. Their briefings, support and the pragmatic way in which they act as an honest broker between stakeholders in the sector is all hugely valuable and makes the membership fees the one invoice a year I really have pleasure paying.
E. M.
Interesting albeit small museum, try to find promo vouchers such 2 for 1, National Rail site will typically have them when bought with rail card
A. C.
Small and probably not the real prison., there was three cells in total I believe. Maybe a theatrical refonstruction. Can't tell as I don't have the info. It just felt fake and small.
K. M.
Visiting here was on my mum's list of 60 things to do before she turned 60 and we both loved it. It's a great tourist attraction for all.
S. W.
Much better than expected. The staff were also great and very friendly. our five year old loved it.
A. S.
it was very interesting you could evenot actually pick up some of the torture equipment and look at them properly the information around the museum was very informative too
J. R.
Small quick tour but very educational. I recommend for all ages if you have a genuine interest in British history
N. G.
Brilliant place tucked away, had a great time in here, get to touch all the exhibits which was a nice change, staff are great and you get a free (behind bars) photo at the end, good value for money, staff were lovely
K. L.
Hidden just down from Borough market. Cheap and well worth a visit
S. W.
It's only small but there is a lot of history in there. Amazing that you are allowed to touch some of the restraints too. Good fun.
R. E.
Small historical museum near Borough market. Very interesting, about a real clink prison. Defiantly worth a visit.
J. M.
It is really small, so if you make a "follow-through" you will be out like in 2 minutes and you will feel you have wasted your money.
In my case, I took my time, read each and every poster, took 100 photos, and …
A. C.
This is a great place to visit. Just amazing to see how barbaric we were. Creepy but good. Well worth the effort.
J. J.
What a fantastic step back to some very dark times, well worth a visit if you are in the area..or if you require any torture tips..🤣🤣
f.
A bit pricey, but very interesting and a lot of fascinating stories. And you can touch the torture instruments.
Q. B.
Nice entry and decor, but not much to see and learn here. Definitely lack of a bit of animation or interactivity.
A. C.

Good way to spend a couple of hours but I don't think I'd recommend it for young children. Great if you're in to history or true crime!
R. E.
Small historical museum near Borough market. Very interesting, about a real clink prison. Defiantly worth a visit.
_.
It's a cheap attraction and very informative, cool or adults and kids.
D. P.
The place should be the real prison. Nowadays it's almost for touristic pourposes. So don't expect real history. However there are some stories from the past about the prison and its inhabitants.
G. R.
There is no age restriction and they happily let us in with a 6 year old. Certain things on show are too graphic and not suitable for young children.
M. N.
10/10 decent museum with some top info about the prison and English history. The only genuine prison museum experience in london and a top notch one at that!
A. C.
This is a great place to visit. Just amazing to see how barbaric we were. Creepy but good. Well worth the effort.
d. b.
Thought it would of been bigger .. the man at the door said , don't rush , take your time
j. f.
Brilliant, good value for money, and they have concessions for O A P'S. Great history on prisons back in day, my mum loved it. 👍🏾👍🏾
f. 1.
Great little museum with a fascinating history with great examples and some bits you can even use and feel!
L. G.
Oldest jail in London that has been very well preserved. It is only a small museum but there is a lot packed into it
S. S.
Not a bad little museum smaller than I was expecting but worth a visit if in the area
A. S.
I enjoyed my time there. It's small and can be done in half an hour, but it's very educational.
t. e.
Really enjoyed it great place for kids at a reasonable price with lots of things to do inside

Interesting but also kind of scary and nothing for people with claustrophobia
B. S.
Outstanding attraction. Small place with a lot of history to offer. Very visual museum.
C. C.
Nice little museum, the kids enjoyed it, especially the rat hunt. Good for fans of Horrible Histories.
H. S.
Not for the faint hearted, but a cool and well laid out museum of Ty he original London prison.
S. D.
This is a great hour of learning about the old Prison. Definitely worth taking children, younger ones may find it more creepy
C. C.
I went in with a friend on the offchance and it was definitely worth the money as we got in for pension prices. Lots to see and loads of history there
g. n. p. !.
There were cool creepy stuff there and plus it feels like Ur in an old prison and at the end u could feel random disgusting stuff in the containers.

Pretty small museum.

i. o.
Absolutely fantastic, atmosphere was brilliant. So very interesting.

A fun place to visit while in London. A small and niche museum with loads of information.

Interesting, but lots of text tables that make it not to popular with kids, especially when from abroad.

Excellent journey into the history of prison
K. T.
Loved it!!! Great experience to touch and play with torture pieces. Well done

Very interesting history wise, lasted about half hour. A good bit off fun.
M. H.
Small museum but a lovely day out and you can have lunch at Borough Market
R. A.
Excellent venue worth the money, set in the Old Southark you can picture the venue when it was a real prison.
M. W.
£8 for hours of fun. Genuine bargain.
S. F.
Was hoping a little more from this as it lacked any interactivity that you may have hoped for something like this, but still not a bad 30 mins spent discovering the gruesome history of londons prisons.
A. K.
Discovered The Clink by accident, loved every second we spent in there, next time we are in London we will return, history as it was,not glorified.
S. K.
A artificial prison museum. It is nice if you have seen everything else or like esp. ancient torture methods

M. C.
Lot to see in small place, well worth an hour or two of your time
L. H.
Was much smaller than I expected but it was good
S. T.
Needs work to make it more interesting. Some "actors" would really help to liven it up.
M. d.
Very interesting history wise, lasted about half hour. A good bit off fun.
I. W.
