Reviews of The Photographers' Gallery
S. L.
Really enjoyed the Helen Levitt's exposition. I had never heard of her work and I enjoyed the way she portrays movement.
I very much loved her coloured photos which were a little gem to see.
K. N.
Lovely open space gallery. The exhibiting I went to see was well curated, and I am a fan of how much they support local and young artists and organise educational programmes for young kids. Nice outing for central london away from the noise
I. J.
Wonderful gallery, right off Oxford Street. Superbly presented exhibition, of inspiring work. A photographers gallery: thoughtful and interesting. An inspiring gem.
A. C.
The latest Helen Levitt exhibition is a must see for any street photography enthusiasts, although entry is not free it's worth every penny. the shop in the basement stocks all sorts of 35mm film as well as prints from previous exhibitions.
H. B. Z. P.
Very important institution for photography, culture and social encounters.
The library offers a very wide range of photography books and they sell also a lot of kinds of film rolls. The entry prices are not so expensive and the exhibition I went to were interesting and well curated.
Photo by Helen Levitt (exhibition 2021)

Really nice and interesting exhibitions for a small price (student concession). Cute cafe which has lovely loose leaf teas and a GF brownie :)
J. L.
Well wor the a visit if there’s a good exhibition on. Nice cafe as well, great coffee and cake.
g.
Unique when it opened on its original site near Covent Garden it has grown into an important and exciting institution. A fine modern building with good gallery spaces, shop, and cafe. A perfect place to meet in the area.
B. M.
Central location is good and easy to find. Place is immaculate and there’s clean toilets on almost all floors. It’s got a cafe with decent seating and a shop in the basement selling all sorts of photo bits and books. Exhibitions are hit and miss as with all art. Cost was reasonable and a different place to stop off on the way to the station.
G.
Great spot for all creative people. Based in heart of Soho, on a narrow street right next to Oxford Street and Marks and Spencer. Somehow quiet and hidden away from all hustle and bustle of the city, so if you're looking for quality coffee and a bit of silence, it's perfect place to go.
They also have little shop downstairs and exhibition gallery upstairs, so you can just pop in to see the artworks or buy some books, postcards etc.
Industry professionals come over there and place is intimate and cosy, so you can easily spot some famous photographers there. Also it's great for people watching, if that's ones thing, cause lots of interesting individuals cross its doors.

When I visit London I go out of my way to visit the Photographers Gallery. It keeps me in touch with what is goin on the the media Internationally. With great friendly staff and café where you can relax
D. B.
First time I've been to it's "new" location and, although the previous site in Great Newport Street, seemed larger (?), this is still a great space to view works over several floors. Good bookshop (and it sells 35mm film too !) and excellent cafe (the cakes !!). Well worth a visit.
M. S.
Staff were lovely! The Helen Levitt exhibition was amazing. The showcasing of Rochdale however felt a bit like poverty p*rn and made the area look much worse than it is which was very uncomfortable as someone from that area
O. T. Z.
Let the day flash by while you check out inspiring photographers work while sipping a coffee. Great location 5 mins from the oxford St. Supporting young and established photographers. A photographers dream.
E.
I love this gallery! Splits different collections onto different floors and seems also quite a hub for photographers! Also, it’s free admission after 5 (it closes at 6 but one hour it’s just enough time to wonder around the whole gallery!). It seems to get quite a few different collections change over often. Good to see some really really good art and get inspired!
M. P.
Always great and thoughtful exhibitions of photography, plus bookshop and cafe
E. J.
Great layout, friendly staff. However, having only one photographer over 3 floors became rather boring. Would suggest checking what photographer they have to ensure the exhibition is relevant to you. May also book other things around this as it isn’t a whole day trip.
M. T.
If you like thought provoking photographs that have been captured by some of the best photographers around this place is a must. Don't forget to go downstairs to the shop, plenty of interesting books to be had.
D.
Hidden away from all the mess and chaos that is Oxford Street; you will find a wonderful public gallery ‘The Photographers’ Gallery’; their focus is exclusively in photography; but the exhibitions are very interesting; my first visit was to see the Under Cover: A Secret History of Cross-Dressers and the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2018 and can’t wait for the next ones – working in the area, I will certainly become a regular – the entry is free if you go before 12:00.
J. M. J.
Photographers’ Gallery always has at least one floor with intriguing content. However, they should refresh their curating team and show to the younger generation that the old-school print making is equal rival of the digital media. For catching the crowds you need more curiosity. I felt each floor disconnected from one another. There is plenty if space for a great story telling. Sometimes less is more, overall, great place, would recommend it to anyone. The cafe area is just perfect. I will bring back a few models for portraits.
S. B.
Fantastic gallery, never been disappointed in any of the frequently changing exhibitions. Treads an admirable line between photography and art, exploring the relationship and interplay between the two disciplines extremely well.
P. C.
I haven't been to the gallery for many years. I found the current exhibitions a bit hit and miss. The Soho exhibition is a nice slice of social history, although I felt that some of the photographs didn't have much to say. However, it was more interesting than the food photography, in my opinion.
A. B.
I have to give this five stars. This is my temple for inspiration! The exhibits are fantastic and very thought out. The book shop is the best i have every seen.the cafe is good the food is yummy but a bit pricey. This is the best gallery which is dedicated tho photography!
J. L.
A cool, modest and modern photography gallery with multiple floors, a cafe and a great shop sellings cameras, camera film, books and prints. Occasional interactive exhibits and free entry before 12noon! Amazingly amazing.
j. b.
Unquestionably a go-to mecca for photography enthusiasts.
In addition to the galleries spread over 3 floors with ongoing exhibitions there’s a comprehensive bookstore, workshops, talks, events and a cafe.
Albeit compact, this facility is a template for functionality and purpose.
Even the 🚾 here is noteworthy.
Exemplary.
E. B.
Excellent Helen Levitt exhibition. Really friendly staff. Excellent space. Good facilities.
D. B.
Great place, free for under 18s, great for students, nice cafe and shop. Film is a little expensive however but do have a huge range to offer. The exhibitions are varied and incredibly well layed out.
M. C.
This gallery situated off Oxford Street covers 5 floors is a must see see for any one interested in photography.
W. Y.
Very interesting exhibition! Smaller than I expected but have a very interesting and impressive collection of photography. It's great to know the stories behind each photo.
J. P.
Small gallery hidden close to the Oxford street. I went to see Urban Impulses: Latin American Photography and the exhibition was short and amazing! 5 quid to get in and you have access to the whole gallery. Haven't tried the coffee shop and unfortunately the bookshop was closed. The gallery is open late on Thursdays
F. L.
I love this gallery! I will definitely be back!
P. B.
Superb exhibition (without the usual high entry fees) followed by an excellent lunch and coffee and a browse in the extensive bookshop downstairs.
e. b.
Lovely small gallery space with fascinating exhibitions, a cafe and prints shop.
G. H.
I went for the Helen Levitt exhibit which was really beautiful. My only complaint was that it was very cramped and hard to navigate.
C. M.
Really liked Helen Levitt's collection of photography depicting the New York streets of the 40's and the contrast in the 70's.
E.
Great to be back at the gallery again post lockdown! A striking exhibition of photos by Sunil Gupta - a retrospective. Highly recommended, it's showing until 24-Jan'2021. Also showing is a moody exhibition of photos by Evgenia Arbugaeva, also highly recommended.
From the gallery website:
From Here to Eternity is the first major retrospective of UK based photographer, Sunil Gupta (b. 1953, New Delhi India) and offers a complex and layered view of Gupta's unique transcontinental photographic vision.
Hyperborea - Stories from the Russian Arctic marks the first major UK exhibition of the award-winning Russian photographer, Evgenia Arbugaeva. Featuring brand new work, this exhibition is the culmination of a long-term project (begun in 2013) focused on the remote land and people of the Russian Arctic
C. W.
When they opened this gallery on this site, the exhibitions were more interesting. Current exhibits seem rather plain in my opinion.
A. S. M.
Photographer Heaven! 😍
Definitive bookshop - temptation in print - + friendly, helpful staff. Great exhibitions at lost cost £5 for all.
Food tasty & good value.
Current stat: bliss! 😊
L. D.
Well worth the a visit. Nice small cafe as well, tasty coffee and cake.
A. B.
Awesome place. My first visit and I was enthralled by the exhibitions and the bookshop is something else! Highly recommended.
R. P.
I have visited the Photographer's Gallery on a number of occasions with friends, usually at the start of one of our many photowalks. It is a fantastic place that hosts a very eclectic range of exhibitions. The cafe on the ground floor is small, but has good quality coffee and cake, and the bookshop downstairs is very well stocked.
Top tip - arrive before 12pm every day for free entry!
J. B.
I wasn't particularly interested in the current exhibition but I enjoyed it nonetheless. We will look out for future events to visit @TPG.
D. G.
It is always a treat to visit The Photographer's Gallery in London. It seems like a different world when you take the short walk from bustling shoppers to a calm gallery. Rotating exhibitions that always challenge my perceptions as a photographer.
B. C.
Small but excellent Gallery. The show we saw of photos from the Russian Arctic was fantastic. Photos that looked like paintings, taken with very little light. However it was the last day. So you've missed it.
D. K.
Lovely gallery check website to see what is going on. Great book shop and cafe.
S. F.
Very nice clean space with a good amount of work from high profile as well as emerging artist. The cafe is also satisfactory.
b. f.
Beautiful gallery with wonderfully intricate curations that pay close attention to detail. Fell in love with the newest exhibition on cross dressing and gender.
r. r.
Nice & relaxed, good layout with lift & stair access to all floors.
D. L.
Great gallery in central London. Very affordable too, £5 entry.
E. R.
Always a something great to see and at reasonable price.
D. C. B.
An absolutely great museum. Interesting exhibitions and nice flair.
k. a.
Best place for photographers 📸.
Y. Y.
The exhibition was good. The building itself is good. Cafe ok. Bookshop is photographer's paradise. Photos are views from top and courses available in autumn
B. C.
Super gallery, especially for a foto dork like me. Exhibit that was on when I stopped by was a secret history of transgenderism. Eyeroll. Upper levels had finalist exhibits for The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2018. Impressive. The shoppe in the basement had some nice offbeat stuff including the weird aerochrome and infrared films that I use and pinhole and sprocket cameras.
R. R.
Great exhibits but please reconsider your policy on card only. Tip toe towards fascism....?
R. D.
One of my favourite galleries in London! The photographer's gallery always has new exciting exhibition, great coffee and an amazing shop on the ground floor.
J. C.
Great Gallery and the Helen Lovitt exhibition was wonderful, what a great photographer!
A. N.
Always good. Helen Levitt's In the street NY 1940s. Excellent.
I. L.
Beautiful space and great photography exhibitions in a very central location. The ones I went to were brilliant - Alex Prager and Tish Murtha.
A. P.
Interesting displays, kind staff and a very good price
n. m.
Good information on events to come . Here are some up and coming events.. already started 👌💎💎💎💎💎 If interested in photography
J. J.
As a photography lover and a semi pro photographer this place is a great source of inspiration with a great variety of exhibitions and photography styles. It is free entry before midday. Good coffee place and decent bookstore.
J. N.
Helen Levitt exhibition is amazing! such a nice gallery
C. G.
Some great photography, especially Heather's photos of 1940's New York
C. P.
Disappointed as thought there was more exhibitions of modern photography.
S. B.
Gallery is good, but the coffee shop should stay open later
E. A.
Good place to spend a few hours and nice coffee shop
l. h.
Really cool place and love that you can purchase film here
E. J.
Great gallery, well laid out and very interesting, not too expensive either, lovely shop as well
K. Y. L. (.
Lovely little hidden gem in the street between Carnaby and Oxford st. Lots of different films to buy and staff always helpful. Will sell single roll of 35mm films instead of bulk packs from other retailers.
L. W.
Always enjoy this Gallery, well presented with thought provoking exhibitions, great value. Friendly, informative and professional staff. The bookshop, prints and other photography items is well worth a visit downstairs. Happy to recommend, have been many times before and will continue to visit when in London.
S.
Really inspiring pieces of billboard art and great atmosphere.
M. W.
Nice gallery on multiple floors. £5 for adults, free for kids, really good value. Would be really nice to get access to the roof as I suspect there would be good views. Enjoyed the current exhibition but changes regularly. Great central London location, slightly hidden down small side street off Oxford Street. Can't comment on the cafe, as we didn't use it, but looked nice coffee, tea and cakes etc.
A. G.
This place always has interesting stuff on show: regularly changing exhibitions, usually two at a time and spread across three floors. It also has a good shop/print room and a street level coffee shop. Inexpensive to visit at any time, and they even allow a free hour at the end of the day (do leave a donation if you can though). Easy to find for visitors to London as it is near the rear entrance of Oxford Street's second Marks & Spencer store (Pantheon).
T. B.
Photographers Gallery is a great hang out for those interested in all matters photographic, as well as exhibitions there's a really good shop and a nice café too- if you get there before 12:00 it's free entry!
f. m.
I love this gallery and often go when I'm visiting London. They show a really diverse mix of artists from around the world with though-provoking works. They often challenge the medium of photography and what it can mean. Good shop and cafe too. What's more, the final hour of admission is free.
V. M.
Had some amazing exhibition when visited. The guardian photo archive was particularly interesting.
P. J.
The best photo gallery in Lo don. Affordable, unpretentious and has a great cafe. I particularly love that kind of exhibitions.on show and that exhibitions rotate very often. The ticket to see paid exhibitions is only £5 for adults. Probably cheapest and best gallery in central London.
N. H.
Always something interesting / great.... Free late Thursday means free entry between 5-8.
C. R.
Vertically challenged multiple spaces and the lift is not featured by the entrance signage, but highly recommended. Nice cafe attached and bright and spacious exhibition spaces. Free after 17.00, which is a nice bonus for a quick visit after work.
V. M.
Got in from the rain and got lost in the exhibits on show. Only came in to buy some B/W film for my SLR, instead of the usual 15mins dash in and out, I found myself losing hours. The place is Clean and you do get some nice views of the land from the very large windows. Great place to Daydream, definitely gonna be coming back.
And it's absolutely Free, outstandingly Brilliant.
T. H.
Well stocked shop downstairs with a wide selection of film and books. Really enjoyed the Alex Prager and Tish Murtha exhibition!
B. L.
Really like this place but you gotta come here with reasonable expectations, even though its 5 stories it has a small floor plate and as a result the exhibits are relatively moderate, but always well executed. Coffee shop at the bottom for post-exhibit chats n snacks, and really exhibits only cost a fiver so can't complain - great addition to London art scene!
D. N.
Nice Gallery with a diverse contemporary photography programme, a relief from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street!
G. W.
Went along to the Polaroid Workshop with Dan Rubin and Polaroid Originals. Had a fantastic afternoon shooting film and picking up tips, even learnt how to fix one of my old cameras!
Z. M.
Great space with interesting and in one case, thought-provoking exhibitions. Very reasonably priced and I like the size of it as you dont get over-whelmed like in a venue like the Tate for example. We took a 19 yr old and 6 yr old and the 6yr old was happy drawing in her sketch book whilst we loved around.
A. M.
Great gallery and very helpful staff.
P. S.
Cramped feel to the place, what is exhibited is VERY good though. Left wanting more...
Cafe is very overpriced.
S. B.
The staff were very friendly, exhibits were beautifully set out and the Accommodations for covid regulations were very easy to navigate.
J. P.
A very interesting gallery showing new photography exhibitions. The displays change approximately every 3 months.
There is also a camera obscura on the top floor. It is fully accessible with a lift and accessible toilets. There is a cafe on the ground floor, we only had a coffee but it seemed a reasonable menu.
C. B.
Well worth a visit, I particularly liked the floor with archive photos from The Guardian
Five pound well spent.
S. D.
A place of devotion to everything around photography. Learning, practising, discovering. With an added value of a lovely books and films shop
E. P.
A multiple store contemporary space located in the heart of London, showcasing the best photography exhibitions and featuring a nice book shop. Current exhibitions explore contemporary emerging talents, and popular culture and photography in South America between 1959 and 2016. I particularly enjoyed the latter, Urban Impulses, which is beautifully curated, funny and challenging at the same time. After 5 PM all shows are free entry (the gallery closes at 6).
S. H.
It's okay in my opinion the café isn't as good as it used tobe in It's previous incarnation. It's trying to hard tobe something it's not; and the food is not upto the quality of what it is amining to be.
As for gallery space, it's obviouslbetter as it has more floors but again it's trying tobe an upmarket elitist gallery of "ART" run by curator's for curators and 'wannabe' curators; and it's shied away from be a photographers gallery and become a photographic artist's gallery
For example, (no names mentioned) if an artist uses the photographic medium to capture their art in situ then, displays the print from that documentation of their work as art is it art or is someone having a laugh? You decide...
C. T.
Beautiful exhibition, well worth to see
l. b.
There are some really great exhibitions there. And the shop in the basement has the best collection of photographic books I have seen in a long time. Cafe is very good, reasonably priced, especially if you are a photography student and can go as a group of 10. Make sure you have your uni ID card. Excellent would recommend.
A. P.
The Photographer's gallery has always been and continues to be an absolute gem.
H. C.
A bit disappointing. The space isn’t particularly nice and at the time I went there were only really 3 floors worth of exhibitions including any kind of photography - and even those weren't overwhelmingly impressive in terms of the photography.
However the exhibition on abortion was interesting and thought provoking - to read. This made it almost worth the trip.
E. N.
Really nice place over several floors with regularly changing exhibitions, plus entry is free early in the morning. A pleasant way to spend your off day even if you don’t regard yourself as a photography person. One minute from Oxford Circus underground station, and a bit further from Charing Cross Road.
A. B.
Always a favourite. Small enough to be managed if your mobility is poor. Large enough to be interesting. Great café
M. T.
Massive selection of 35mm film and photography books.
P. B.
The place to go for creative photography. Inspires you with ideas, regularly changing art, different levels & perceptions.
Sometimes appealing, other occasions not my cup of tea, but always questioning, eye-opeming, lenses on our weird & wonderful world.
Welcome cafe to reflect on what you've experienced.
R. R.
Great photography, amazing exhibition spaces, a very good bookshop, a print sales department and very good coffee. What's not to love?
J.
Stumbled across this place and I am really glad I did. Only 5 pound entrance and you have a great gallery to explore. The work that they have on display is fantastic and truly interesting.
The bookshop store at the end could not be better and it is dangerous as I could easily spend alot of money on books and art work.
P. T.
Great space divided to several levels. There is a lift and a cafe.
J. U.
A well curated gallery in the middle of Soho, with five floors of exhibitions. One of the current exhibitions when we went was not really our cup of tea, but the exhibition of Soho through the decades was really interesting. Nice cafe downstairs with good coffee.
P. M.
The Helen Levitt exhibition was OK, the cafe was OK and the shop was OK.
c. k.
Staff were very friendly and helpful. The gallery is not large though it has 5 floors plus a bookshop in the basement. The floors can be accessed by a lift. The gallery is only a 5-10 min walk from Oxford St tube.
L. T.
Fabulous gallery and excellent staff. We have purchased several photographs from TPG and highly recommend them. Sadly, we have not visited the physical space but can attest to the integrity and quality of the staff and high quality artists they represent.
M. W.
Love this place. Years ago while studying photographic arts at Westminster uni my favourite teacher was David Campany. Today while visiting the exhibition and poping down to the shop i saw his book... ❤️ 📸 This place has interesting events on too. Perfect for meeting like minded folk. Ohh and cafe was cute too.. But low key choice on gf goods :( still oat milk hot chocolate was lovely. Btw i heard "juxtaposition" mentioned about 10 times during my coffee brake 💪😊
I. L.
Very suitable place for exhibitions. Easy to reach and easy to enjoy. Free admission before 12 o'clock.
K. M.
I visited here recently. Generally a positive experience. Good space, and not many others there on a busy X as weekend. Easy to find, has cafe, toilets and shop. Good exhibits on at present, that push boundaries. Only £5. 5 floors, 3 used for exhibits.
E. J.
Lovely modern gallery with some incredible photographic work, lovely café in the building too with coffee and cake, although a little expensive. The exhibition that I attended was free before 12pm and includes three floors with three different photographers. The staff were very friendly. This is a genuinely nice place to spend your free time in London.
S. P.
Great gallery which always has an interesting exhibition or two on the go. Free entry before 12:00 noon, a nice café and a gift shop.
It's a great place to go if you have an hour to spare. Just south of Oxford Street and very close to the tube at Oxford Circus
J. B. (.
Great exposition on 4th and 5th floor.. and amazing activity for photographers and Artist.. Friday Folio.. worth visiting on Fridays.
M. N.
This is one of the hidden gems in Soho. Hidden behind the stately buildings that line Oxford Street, it is easily reachable from Oxford Circus tube station. Their exhibitions are always thought provoking and stimulating. For every exhibition they have little forms with just one question about the exhibition that you can fill up with your personal opinion and put it anonymously in a little box and periodically they read them and choose the most interesting ones that they put up on a board for everybody to read. I think this is a very nice way to interact with the public and inspiring them to have an opinion by showing them the opinions of other fellow exhibition goers. This is fantastic!
A. M.
Explorations of photography in the 21st century so you will find photos but also videos, audio, books and curated displays. Can be from the art end of the practice of photography so not always that accessible but if you want to know where the leading edge of photography is then this is the place. £5 to visit although free after 5pm Thursday.
J. f.
Great find. Saw a couple of great exhibitions which were well laid out with informative background information. Also the added bonus of a great cafe and a bookshop that's worth a visit in its own right.
D. C.
Great place to visit and really good value. We saw the Alex Prager Silver Lake Drive exhibition which I would really recommend. There are three floors of exhibits including videos. There's a nice little cafe on the ground floor. Lots of bathrooms for visitors too.
C. B.
Great gallery.
J. G.
Fabulous art space and cafe and really good photography exhibitions
A. N.
Located in an intimate spot. Great book collection and materials. Was happily surprised by a cuban expo which included photos from Havana, Vinales and others taken 10 years ago and in black and white. There is also a cafe etc. Would recommend.
M. S.
Whenever I'm in that area, I have to visit the gallery. The photographic exhibitions are always fantastic, showcasing amazing photographer's work. The bookshop is also great with a huge selection of photobooks from all the famous as well as little known photographers. It's very hard for me not to spend a lot of money in there. If you are a photographer or just like photography this is a must visit.
W. L.
Great exhibitions and fantastic cafe. £5 entry. Cafe drinks are about £3. Takes about 45 mins minimum - more if you want to slow and take in more detail.
A. T.
Great place tucked away on a side street, away from the busy streets. This is one of the places I come to when I need inspiration for my photography projects. The bookstore downstairs has a good selection of publications so always good to browse around.
A. N. H.
This place is amazing if you're an art/photography student. Entry is free before 3pm and only £2.50 for students. The place is pretty huge, too. There's a café on the ground floor, a book/gift/camera shop on the basement and 4 more stories full of exhibitions, including an interactive room with a camera obscura on the 3rd floor (only open Mondays).
Every single aspect of this place is very interactive. They have little pieces of paper for you to draw on, say which piece was your favourite, and tours around the gallery by the artists involved.
B. M.
Photographic gallery with exhibitions over 3 floors. Interesting and challenging subject matter in a clean and modern building.
L. J.
Most affordable place to pick up 35mm film. Appears to be the cheapest place in London for 3x Kodak 200/400.
F. R.
Great space on 5 floors with lift access. The rooms are spacious and there was a mix of high quality prints and audio visual content at the time of my visit. A professional gallery in every sense.
A. G.
Amazing place, great exhibitions. highly recommend it
r. g. T.
Great! I went for an exhibition, which was good. But be cateful if you are a film photographer, the shop in the basement has the best selection of film I have ever seen offline. I spent a fortune (but I'm sure it will be worth it)
A. R.
One of my favourite spots in London for art...although it used to be free 2 years ago it won't break the bank exactly at 5 pounds entry. 3-5 floors of different ever changing photography exhibits will keep you intrigued.
J. B.
Obviously those interested in photography will love it but it's fairly limited by space which limits the types of exhibitions . I left wanting to see so much more. Fairly avant guarde material so I would like to see some more historical exhibitions. Great and understandably doesn't take very long to visit.
I. F.
I had a few hours to kill in central London so made my way to the Photographers Gallery. Love this place. The breadth of photographic topics covered shows how the gallery always pushes to be different and provocative. Go visit.
S. F.
Too manu photographers and very good exhibitions
B. R.
Thoroughly enjoyable visit to two excellent art installations. It was my first visit but definitely not my last. A gritty black and white exhibition by Tish Murtha juxtaposed with a full colour installation of Photographs and film by Alex Prager.
Fascinating.
T. B.
Great place - great exhibitions!
A. C.
A very particular way to explore your interest by photos, films and documentaries
B. M.
The place is very beautiful. The gallery is built very well. There are two floors (the 5,4 floors) about Alex Prager's photos and videos. The video rooms have chairs, the sound very well and there are the dark curtains to don't enter the light. There are the lifts. In the third floor there is a obscure camera to see the reflection of the light on a panel. If you go before 12 it's free. I didn't know Alex Prager but know I like her. Her short films are very beautiful (for the shots, for the lights, for chamber movement and for the plot).
L. N.
5 floors, though all areas are fairly small. 3 galleries, 1 shop, 1 cafe. Toilets on most floors. Cheap entrance.
I didn't really enjoy this display but for the price I'd go back, certainly shows potential
J. N.
Love the photographers' gallery. Affordable exhibitions of outstanding quality every time
C. D.
Always so varied, thought provoking and educational. A great place to spend a few hours or even just pop in for a brief visit. Staff friendly and knowledgeable every time I've visited. It's my first stop anytime I'm in London.

Used to visit the PG when it was still in Leicester Square, but it's new location is still conveniently central now being in Oxford Street! .Bookshop is much smaller, so too the café. But the exhibits ,and spaces are good. Can be a bit pricy to visit, but on the whole it's not too bad.
K. C.
Work is generally very well presented with good use of the available space. The curators dare to take risks and don't shy away from presenting less straightforward work. A visit always yields new discoveries and they have an excellent book shop.
S. H.
Great place to hang out. Has a cafe with reasonably good coffee depending on who is serving. Gallery entry is free before 12 am I believe. Don't eat the food though!
d. s.
Lovely gallery, interesting exhibition and the book shop is great.
J. B.
Still one of the best galleries in the UK. Most exhibition s are free before mid-day which is amazing. Always something to challenge the grey matter and the eyes here. Plus it has a good cafe and awesome bookshop.
Y.
The art gallery is one of the best galleries I've been to. I saw a Tish Murtha exhibition and an Alex Perger one as well. Both were captivating and beautiful in such different ways. And it's also free if you come before 12 pm! Would definitely come again.
P. I.
This is a nice gallery right along Oxford street. Admission is free, and there are plenty of bathrooms if you need to use the facilities. The exhibits are on a rotating basis with 1 to 2 exhibits per floor. There is also a nice little cafe on the the ground floor that is worth checking out.
A. H.
Excellent photographic gallery just off Oxford St (nearest tube Oxford Circus). It's free to enter before 12 noon but after that £4 9 (2.50 concessions). As of July 2017 has an amazing exhibition by Gregory Crewsdon - Cathedral of Pines.
D. J.
Very good exhibitions, talks and events!! I really enjoyed Nina Power's key note recently! And I appreciate that is reasonably cheep to get it! Lovely cafe too!
G. S.
Great selection is exhibition
s. b.
Firstly, great pit stop for cafe with robust Wi-Fi. Secondly, the exhibition space is great and a very welcome interlude as well as good value. Thirdly, it's all in a nice container which satisfied my appreciation of architectural detailing!
C. B.
A great secret spot to know about, perched just behind the UK's busiest street. I’m fairly new to photography as a medium, but I feel that The Photographer’s Gallery is accessible to both professionals and casual observers alike. Entry was just £2, and I happily spent several hours exploring the different collections, which are refreshed regularly, so you get a different experience every time. On my visit, I was particularly drawn to the fascinating Shirley Baker exhibition of the shifting scene of Northern England in the 1960s and 1970s – which was nicely complemented by the more contemporary exhibition on music culture – I really feel there is something for everyone. I’d also recommend the bookshop tucked downstairs; perfect for coffee table gifts, with a range matching the exhibitions, and for general interest. Don’t forget to stop by the café, a peaceful place with great tea(!) - to reflect on the day’s exploits.
K. V.
Really interesting gallery on 5 floors with different exhibitions and a fab bookshop with art and photography books galore. Also a very relaxed cafe on the ground floor. Recommended.
b. p.
I always love it here, there is always a catching exhibition and an atmosphere of novelty.
P. J.
If you like photography a visit here is a real no-brainer. The constantly changing exhibitions rarely disappoint and if nothing appeals the bookshop and cafe are worth a visit alone. It's chilled out with a great vibe.
J. B.
Love the photographer's gallery! Well-curated exhibits + nice selection of photo books and magazines in the shop downstairs. Wish they'd open a branch in San Francisco :)
R. W.
A great little gallery, somewhat hidden away in Soho, but with some fantastic and well-laid out exhibitions and projects. I've only been here once and I'm sure the exhibitions change regularly, but it was a great place to while away a couple of hours and think and reflect upon some creative and challenging pieces. I'm sure I'll be back.
I. J.
Compact gallery dedicated to photography with a changing exhibition programme, active education and engagement activities plus an addictive prints sales room and bookshop. Ground floor cafe is a haven off-hours, but rammed at lunchtimes. Admission is free before noon every day.
M. R.
Farily good, varied exhibitions. However, these change very rarely, so not really a place to visit frequently.
J. T.
Love this small gallery. Intimate and beautiful exhibitions. Always a delight to visit beautiful basement bookshop too!
H. L.
Very nice little gallery with some great exhibitions
G. R. M.
Free before noon. £2.50 for seniors & children or with the demonstration of a student ID, and £5 for everyone else. Great for an in-depth look into pivotal photographic movements and artists who've made an impact on how we perceive the world.
R. S.
Does what it says on the cannister. Obviously exhibition specific.
J. C. S.
Hmm well the exhibition was good but I somehow expected a bit more. Was my third visit of it and always felt the same... Bookshop downstairs is great.
P. H.
Amazing gallery! Hidden gem! 😉 ☺
Loved it! Although the theme were pretty serious and in every way very engaging, I have learnt so much, I will definitely go again to see what else they have to offer.
E. G.
Free before noon! Start at the top floor and work your way down. Great little café with some lovely pastries and coffee. In the basement is this amazing bookshop with everything book and photography nerds want and need
C. W.
My first steps and inspiration for photography started here, so I feel like a little girl everytime I come.
There is always something magnificent exhibited on the walls of this gallery.
As a photography geek it has been my pleasure to admire great artworks from famous photographers here.
The building has three floors and a cafe that often hosts events exploring and debating photography.
Recently there was a project . A photograph is shown on a display with the question "What do you see?".
That's the reason I love this place so much - they encourage creativity and open artistic minds. I'm sure a lot of talents were born here.
Even if you're not that much into art, I suggest you make a visit.
There is a bookstore where you can buy photographer's books.
They also have some cameras and films for sale.
P. P.
One of the exhibition was pretty good (Wim Wenders) but I expected more, I was a little bit disappointed
M. R.
I'm not that interested in photography but my friends are so we usually end up here. The place is like heaven for them that love everything about it and I can't make them leave no matter what. In my opinion the place looks cosy and the food is also pretty good so even if you are not that interested you might want to stop by. Just remember to keep your eyes open as the little sign is easy to miss.
B. H.
An enjoyable couple of hours. In some ways the store is better than the exhibitions. Every great photo book is there. Worth a visit, and it's inexpensive.
D. R.
My other half loves this place. He is a keen photographer and goes there often. It has loads of neat stuff from books to exhibitions and camera products. There is also a coffee shop where you can relax and treat yourself to coffee and cake.
J. P.
This is the key gallery for photography in London. Content varies with the exhibition - they are often outstanding. There is an ok cafe and you can by selections of numbered prints. The £5 entrance is well worth it.
A. O.
Great education space and events, in addition to the exhibitions. I love coming here.
M. G.
Interesting mix. Some exhibitions seem pointless but some inspirational. Good shop.
C. S.
I've only been here once, but I really liked it. Short and sweet sort of gallery, you can easily go through all the displays without getting tired of the exhibition. Will definitely drop by again to see what's on next :)
T. B.
Brilliant. Amazing shows for decades. Don't forget though that people needing to pay to travel to London can rarely get there by 1200. Proof of address of over 50 miles should extend free admission to 2:00 p.m.
Q. J. M.
Excellent place i liked this place london is very Beautiful place i loved everything about it ... Surrounded by interesting places you must visit if you go to London. The National Gallery, The Portrait Gallery, The Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields.... and wonderful restaurants and cafes too...
c. d.
Easy to find, off oxford street down some steps, just before you get to Boots and it is ahead of you.. Interesting exhibitions and good shop..reasonably priced entrance fee...also had a nice little cafe.
P. W.
High quality photographic exhibitions including cafe, shop and print sales room. An important resource and centre of gravition for people interested in photography as well as photographers. Even though purpose built, I find it architectually awkward and cramped to navigate and the gallery space isn't generous. But definitely worth the visit for the quality of the programme.
D. R.
Good cafe. Meeting place.
S. H.
Exhibitions can be a bit hit and miss. Too much 'I'm an Artist' and Curators who wish they were photographers or artists or both but are not and never will be.
It's lost it's way a little and gone down the artist curator route, pandering to each other's egos and not creative of photographers in forgotten areas of the art of photography.
Book shop is good, Café okay, both are overpriced and were better when they were in their previous location.
C. E.
Funny mix of exhibitions for me: some outstanding, some pretentious and irritating. Staff mixed too, some lovely, some smug and ignoring all the ordinary visitors. Nice cafe: not cheap but good food and coffees and teas.
G. P.
Current exhibitions are really not for me hence few stars. However, despite being a little small, the venue itself is quite pleasant. It's sort over multiple flies but there is a lift..
W. A.
A really quite large multi level building on a small area of land. Lifts or stairs can be used to access all floors. Cafe on ground level, shop in basement, a floor dedicated to teaching and workshoping and 2 floors of exhibition spaces.if you go before midday, it's free
P. K.
This is one of those London institutions all art lovers in London know and cherish. Ah and the cafe does awesome vegan cake.
M. S.
Only used this shop to collect a DPD parcel but the staff were really helpful and friendly considering they had been overrun with DPD parcels prior to Christmas so I can't thank them enough. Looks like they do some great stuff here and not just printing photos as you can also get personalised mugs, phone cases etc. So I will be investigating this shop further for gift ideas. would recommend anyone to take a look at what they offer.
R. G.
Roman Vishniac's photography was being shown (until 24/02/19) when I visited, and additional to his great photography you get a unique account of the Jewish experience leading up to WW2, and in tandem with the Jewish Museum in Camden, the Jewish perspective on the 20th century is well documented through his lens. It's a story both beautiful and sad, and a necessary education.
M. L.
Ever since the William S. Borroughs exhibition a few years ago this place has always been on my itinerary if I go to London. I've never been disappointed with the staff, bookshop, or exhibitions; the recent Saul Leiter and 'Human Rights Human Wrongs' exhibitions have both been superlative. Well worth a look!
S.
Nice, small photo gallery. Free access before 12h. Otherwise £5 or £2.5 as a student. Nice exhibition of the Jewish photographer. Not so crowded.
J. H.
An essential stop for photographers. Great exhibits and one of my favourite bookshops in London, stocking photo book essentials, cameras and film. Come on Thursday evening and it's free.
R. M.
THE CAFE : The cafe at The Photographer's gallery in London W1 is a calm, bright and friendly place. It's central location lends itself as a convenient meeting place where you can enjoy lunch, tea, coffee or a beer. It gets quite busy at lunchtime. Their fare is locally sourced and consists in fresh pasta dishes, freshly made sandwiches, salads, soups, cakes and wonderful pastries. Free WIFI! Highly recommended.
L. M.
Located down a little side street off oxford Street, blink and you'll miss it, make sure you an idea where it is before you go. A great building both inside and out with an inspiring mix of photography exhibitions. An excellent place to while a way an afternoon or drop in for a quick burst of visual stimulation.
A. B.
Nice cafe downstairs with good coffee, but great set of exhibition spaces above, usually with something on that makes it worth the trip. Entry to the exhibitions is free before 12:00
S. M.
A sweet multistorey slip of a gallery in Soho, showcasing photographic art from top photographers. Good for whiling away a bit of time in central London. Great gift shop for all books photography related. Worth a visit.
L. K.
It's a nice place to visit and see an exhibition if you are into photography. There is a nice coffee shop and they do classes/workshops for photographers. If you enter before mid day the exhibitions are free
C. C.
Nice selection and good variety
E. E.
Nice gallery with changing exhibitions.
R. G.
A must visit if you're a photography fan in London. Multiple floors full of quality photographic work, regular events and talks on photography, and a wonderful shop that's full of excellent photography books and plenty of film too if you like your film cameras.
S. H.
The original café run by a husband and wife team was much better. Their food was made fresh that day and you didn't get half filled rolls or sandwiches with all the filling up front.
The new café is okay but you get the feeling that it's trying to hard to be a more 'up market' café/restaurant' with prices to match. It's better than the coffeé chains, with the bonus of the photo galleries and a photo lead bookshop.
N. H.
I visit each time I'm in London. Always very well curated exhibitions, super space to be in. Lovely cafe and highly tempting bookshop!
E. L.
it's in the back alley of a busy street, and the sign of it is not very massive so it took me some time to find it. inside the gallery is not very big tho there are 3 stories in the building. apart from the show room there is also a cafe and shop there where you can find some interesting gifts and of course they are all photography related.
T. B.
If your a keen photographer you will definitely find some form of inspiration in this gallery.
They have a great shop in the basement with many photo books for sale.
Have a look what's on!
I. M.
I went to see the Gregory Crewdson's exhibition. Both the gallery space and exhibition were excellent.
Staff were friendly and helpful too.
Well worth a detour on a rainy afternoon on Oxford Street.
K. G.
Although I didn't go in the gallery, I did go in the cafe for apple tart and coffee. It is a quiet cafe away from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street. Perfect location to relax in and unwind.
N. D.
One of the best galleries in London for photography, photojournalism, and photographic arts. Not just white cube exhibitions, they hold regular seminars and artist talks and have a great archival collection. (The cafe isn't bad, either!)
V.
Very unique space always filled with interesting exhibitions.
S. F.
Everyone interested in photography has to check out this super gallery. Extremely interesting and well put together exhibitions, which challenge your creativity and make you think
J. O.
I’m very glad I had a chance to see the wonderful exhibition here! I’ll visit again for sure!
G. B.
When I visited London a few months before I moved here, I went to The Photographers' Gallery. It was a nice place, but then closed for about a year. Now it reopened again at the Soho location. They did a nice job in refurbishing the building, it's a simple and clean exhibition space with some nice corners inside. If you like photography, it's always worth to take a look at the current exhibition.
There is a cafe on the ground floor, which is nice and light, but unfortunately you only get rather watery Lavazza coffee. So for the coffee, you're better off walking over to Foxcroft & Ginger or Flat White on near-by Berwick Street. Or, if you want to cross Oxford Street, Kaffeine is also not too far away.
M.
On 27 October 2020 my husband, daughter and I visited this place.
We loved exhibition called Hyperborea👏
Recommended👍
J. U.
The first photographer's gallery in London. Also a great Italian style cafe right at the entrance, for those who want to experience a lovely sustainable coffee by Lavazza, in a "cultural" space. People from the staff are very kind, especially the cafè and deli Manager, Emanuele!!
m. h.
Great place to pick up a wide selection of 35mm and 120 film. 3 or four floors of gallery space too which is always interesting. The staff are super helpful And friendly too
C. v. C.
A treasure trove of well curated exhibitions in a somewhat neglected art form. This place does great work to enhance photography's standing in the art world. Free before noon!
R. L.
I’m a big Alex Prager fan and I liked the exhibition but it didn’t blow me away. The other exhibits currently on view were uninspiring. A bit pricey for the offerings.
T.
Come before noon or you will have to pay £3 to view the exhibits now. The cafe is alright I guess if you stick to the drinks. The food isn't that great though.
J. S.
A lovely gallery just of Oxford Street. There are some great exhibitions with an excellent shop downstairs.
There is also a great cafe on the ground floor if you just want to escape the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street.
S. D.
Their new building is a tall, thin mewshouse right in the middle of Soho where you can avoid the Oxford Street crowds and check out some (usually free exhibitions). We were a bit unlucky when we went; the LOL cats exhibition (pictures of cats have been "a thing" since the Victorian times, apparently), was only one wall, and their Camera Obscura exhibition had been replaced by a craft workshop. Still, both were free, their cafe does great tea and cake, and the shop on the bottom floor is a proper treasure trove for anyone who likes old cameras and enormous beautiful books.
M. W.
One of the best galleries for your FIRST date. And loadsa clean loos as well.
J. E.
Hidden gem of central london - 2 floors of photography exhibitions just off tge buxy oxford steet.
Definitely a go!
C. F.
I participated at the Folio Friday. A monthly event free for photographers who want to show their work to new audiences. Highly recommended
M. B.
The most interesting place I've ever been to. These days, everyone's a photographer but not everyone actually understands the beauty of it. The gallery is big and they change the exhibitions quite often so you always have something to see.
G. B.
What a great place. Excellent polite staff, lots of excellent photography to see, bookshop which contains hundreds of books and magazines, print room for those with loads of money and an excellent cafe
R. S.
Good stuff exhibited but it's way too small for being free in the morning hours. Maybe arrive a few minutes before 12:00 so you can get in for free but can avoid the morning peak.
E. F.
It is my favourite art gallery in London, I always attend all exhibitions there. I am so happy that the art gallery is open again
R. B.
It's free before 12 and I got there at 11.50 so perfect. Also great photos. Worth walking from their old address to the new one, they moved in 2008, I guess I'm just not with it anymore.
I. N.
They always have brilliant exhibitions on.
S. H.
Very good place to visit if you're into art and photography in general with new stuff displayed all the time. The free entry before lunch is a nice bonus.
J. E.
I went to see the Gregory Crewdson exhibition on 3 floors and loved how conorehensive it was. There was the images, a short video interview and books of his work was also displayed. Fantastic space
K. 1.
The Photographers' Gallery was founded in London in 1971, as the first public gallery in the UK devoted solely to photography. It is also home to the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, established in 1996 to identify and reward photographic talent and innovation, and the Bar-Tur Photobook Award.
S. H.
Well worth a visit.
A. C.
Great place to see photography exhibitions. Check out their website to see their upcoming talks and workshops. Everything is always so inspiring 💕
A. L.
Always pleasantly surprised with the exhibitions held here, I've never left disappointed. Free before 12pm. Coffee and cake on ground floor.
m. o.
Went to see Gregory Crewdson's exhibition 'Cathedral of the Pines' and loved the space and light. Great bookshop downstairs too, with lovely staff who are every so helpful.
K. R.
As a gallery i like it. The exhibitions can be a bit conceptual but recently they have been great. NOTE: I VISITED RECENTLY - IT WAS FREE ON SUNDAY BEFORE NOON!
A. A.
First time around, I couldn't find the place. I am glad I tried harder as this is a great place with constantly updated exhibitions.
The cafe is nice and a good excuse to stay a bit longer.
M. J.

M. S.
Book shop has friendly staff and signed editions of great photography books. Large and wide range collection. They do gift cards if you ask them.
S.
5 story small gallery of various historical occurrences. It cost us 5 pounds per person. A coffee shop is attached to the corner. It was not what I anticipated. However, I didn't research it very well.
K.
Love the gallery, lots of great exhibition and the book shop is DREAMY
I. D. d. R.
Brilliant bookshop! Brilliant building! Brilliant curating!
E. L.
Exhibits that are heavy and moving. The gallery is small but well laid out - great accessibility too lift to all levels and can enter step free!

The best photography choice in town. Even if you've already seen the exhibits, there's always great coffee and a great bookshop downstairs.
A. D.
My happy place. Love browsing in the bookshop, spending time in the cafe with friends and viewing the exhibitions. Great workshops and socials too.

Great space. Always a nice selection of shows on. The camera obscura is a fun addition. The shop downstairs sells a range of interesting books and lomography style cameras and gadgets.
S. A.
Every time I've been here, there have been wonderful exhibitions, sometimes of photographers whose work I'm familiar with, but often I've been introduced to work I've never seen before.
A. N. (.
Loving everything here, specially the small store downstairs - you can grab some really cheap photobooks and some rare film rolls there too. 👌🏻
A. P. S.
Great photography space. 4 floors of galleries, main floor with a cafe and a splendid bookstore/print store in the basement. A must go in London if you are into photography.

A bit other/old worldly. Made me want to go back to buying films and waiting for the best shots to come by.
A few exhibitions on at the moment.
G. L. P.
After some thorough and extensive Wikipedia research, we can say with full authority that the word ‘photography’ comes from the Greek, meaning ‘drawing with light’. The Photographer’s Gallery, with its new facelift, is more than ever a remarkable canvas upon which to draw.
In an ever-evolving world of photography, where everyone with a camera phone becomes a photographer, it was only right that The Photography’s Gallery adapt too. Its 1910 warehouse, a cultural oasis just off the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street, has been revamped and reloaded with two new floors and fitted with all the mod cons including a camera obscura, a voyeuristic spy cam on the street outside, and a new huge screen in the entrance to showcase the newest digital material. Outside, the late-Victorian brickwork has been complimented with large dramatic swathes of and a spectacular wraparound ground-floor window. Not just an exhibition space, but a place for talks, workshops or perhaps simply a coffee and brownie combo in the café downstairs.
All in all, the new facelift ensures that Britain’s leading centre for contemporary photography, a showcase for established and emerging talent, still leads the pack.
B. J.
Visited on multiple occasions, a nice venue that often hosts excellent photography exhibitions. A tad small and the shop is rather pricy though.
M.
Great little gallery behind Oxford Street. They have done great exhibitions on and they're gift store has some really good books.
A. F.
Always good for a visit. If not even for the exhibits then the cafe is always a nice place to sit down and grab a good tea.
O. H.
Great exhibitions. Keep it up. Lately it seems to become another wannabe hangout after 18H00. I hope it doesn't get killed by these sheeple
L. P.

Rather small, but interesting photo exhibitions for a reasonable price (or for free before noon)
