Reviews of Sywell Aviation Museum
R. A.
Free entry, donations welcome, it’s like a Tardis inside. The guys in charge are super knowledgeable and very friendly and the exhibits are vast, unique, wonderful in fact, I was pleasantly surprised.
You feel like you are stepping back in time the minute you enter the door, the museum is quite unique in its approach. From medals to pieces of crashed aircraft, uniforms and weapons, personal histories to paper cuttings, it’s all very well displayed?
There are two planes on the outside, one being the Hawker Hunter jet, we loved looking around this museum and we’ll definitely be back.
D. F.
Excellent place to vist for Air shows or Car shows. Lot's of parking at the second gate and an overflow car park a little further up the road, we went on a Saturday for the Silverstone Auction with Fetrari owners club there also, lots to see if you like Ferrari's and Old planes an excellent combo. I would highly recomend it to anyone with children of the age 5 and older.
T. C.
What a fantastic place. The gentlemen running it were kind, welcoming and you could tell they are not only knowledgeable but passionate. You could spend hours reading through amount of information and looking at the pieces. At first glance I thought it would be small and limited but the sheer volume of interesting items was incredible. Highly recommended to any avionics or history lover.
And an added bonus of having the blades air display team in the air too! Also a great watch. We will be returning soon.
J. O.
Great little museum dedicated to the people of the local area and their involvement in WW2. Lots of information on all the exhibits. Free to enter but they take donations via cash or card. Cafe/restaurant in the main buildings had a good variety of food and harked back to the 40's in style and music playing. Great place to while away the hours watching aircraft flying. Dogs are allowed inside and outside in the cafe area.
G. B.
It was great to see the museum open again and to be so well supported. It has an amazing collection of items and i need to go back for some more research.
All in all a worthy 5 star
M. W.

If you are interested in aeroplanes and history of war... this is the place you must visit
B. S.
I always love going here especially when there are events on. Yesterday it was very busy with many visitors for the 21st anniversary of the museum and plenty of visiting military vehicles and some other gorgeous vehicles form the middle of last century and earlier.
P. D.
Pistons and props show. Great day out. Great atmosphere. Awesome vehicles. Would be 5 stars but for the disgusting state of the portable toilets and definite lack of hand sanitiser stations or any kind of social distancing enforcement whatsoever.
J. B.
Great couple of hours spent looking round the interesting items on display.the volunteers were really knowledgeable, answered questions and were friendly. well worth a visit
R. R.
Though not large, it is housed inside a long nissan hut, it is jam packed with interesting objects and helpful notes, and free to enter, there is a donation box, to help with the upkeep
R. F.

M. L.
Love the art deco buildings and decor. Great history to the aerodrome. There is a museum attached. The restaurant does good food. All the staff are friendly. The hotel has comfy beds and is also art deco. The whole place has a great feel. The surrounding villages are really pretty too
T. S.
Lovely airfield, the museum is fantastic to visit lovely staff very friendly. Great place to spend a bit of time in the sun, planes and a beer.
P. T.
I live local to the Museum and have never been before so I decided to head over and look around.
I went on their opening day, 20th April 2019, when there were having a grand re-opening (they close over winter). The grand opening was really good with lots, and lots of WW2 vehicles White armoured cars, Jeeps, LRDG vehicles all in fine condition all of which were part of various local re-enactment and historical groups and are not normally present on site.
There were also showing of a newly renovated Hawker Hunter aircraft on which they have done a fine job.
The museum is very compact but contain a very large number of items and is worth a good wander around. The only real issue is that it's a little cramped and that doesn't, in some cases, allow them to display the items in their full glory.
T. L.
Great time here alone and with grandchildren
Friendly staff, lots to see.Lovely food and drinks
V. B.
Lovely little place to relax, totally free! They have some outstanding wartime artifacts
M.

This museum is cramed full of little gems. The museum is free and run by very knowledgeable volunteers. Definitely recommended. Only shame is that we don't live nearer to it.
V. C.
I found this little jem when trying to find things to do with the boys in the summer holidays.
The Sywell Aviation Museum has not got the biggest exhibition collections but never the less is a very we planned and educational journey for those interested in the second world war and beyond and is run by enthusiastic volunteers.
You will find it located in five Nissen huts (formerly POW Camp Huts) at Sywell Aerodrome.
Outside is a complete airframe of a Hawker Hunter which is still been restored and inside is a mixture of uniforms & clothing, medals, aircraft cockpits, air launched weapons, plane models, bombs, guns and much more and they even have a genuine war-time Jeep.
Entry is free or by donation so their amazing work a can continue. My boys absolutely loved it.
Opens mainly at weekends but do check first.
L. A.
Brilliant day out,so much to see & do,
a real feel good day, wonderful event & hopefully many more to come.
S. H.
It was great seeing the planes and helicopters coming and going, we were lucky enough to see a chinook land. I did find the food there a bit expensive for what it was though. Worth a visit though.
A. T.
Absolutely amazing place. Very thought provoking. Superb displays and information.
M. E.
Great displays, planes outside, and visiting exhibits today.

P. M.
Lovely to see the aerodrome being visited by so many people. Free entry and free parking a bonus.

So welcoming and friendly. My boys absolutely loved going around and seeing all the displays, they even got the chance to sit in an ejector seat. Whilst walking around one of the staff came up to us to offer the boys an aeroplane sticker. I can genuinely say my boys want to come back for plenty more visits in the future. Thank you,
W. J.
Me and my son Love it. Shame they don't have a small playground. Museum and planes flying in. Great place.
B. B.
Always see the planes flying you can also get flight lessons and there's a museum on the history of sywell aerodrome.
O. W.
Went for the Pistons and Props weekend and it was amazing! Four of us went in a group and there were stores and food for all of us and plenty to keep us all thoroughly entertained.
T. F.
Great venue good car show.
C. J.
Totally different experience in life it's good to see histrionic weapon which used against the enemy
J. F.
Excellent museum with great selection of exhibits, many with local connections. Only two aircraft , although many dioramas and aircraft parts. Can be teamed with a meal in the excellent art deco Aviator hotel adjacent.
S.
I love Sylwell as it's not far from our homes well as there's lovely Country Park nearby.
Both my partner and our son love to watch planes. And at Sylwell whenever we fancy to go there it's always something to see.
M. B.
This is essentially a collection of aviation archaeology placed into context. Shattered pieces of aircraft are related to their original machines through models and photographs. This is how museums should be: there are countless delights but so much that you will soon decide you need a return visit!
K. G.
Nice place. Definitely worth going.
Z. G.
Nice staff. but i did loose my pet hotdog.
C. A.
Beautiful aircrafts & a lovely indoor seating area
N. R.
Super little museum staffed by really friendly and knowledgeable volunteers with loads of great artefacts and on the aerodrome so can see aircraft and also a bar /restaurant on the site. Free entry but make a donation to keep them up and running.

If you want to find out what happened, who was stationed in the Northamptonshire area around WWII then pop in for a visit free to entry and donation welcome well worth popping some money in to keep this gem of historical importance going.
Both American and British exhibits with some cool little mock-ups a must visit if your in the area.
M. B.

A. B.
Amazing visit and the volunteers knowledge is incredible. Spent a lovely morning here and will deffo go back.
C. D.
Always seem to find myself driving past this, and every time my childhood dream of being a pilot re-emerges - as what little boy didn’t want to be a fighter pilot?
Always seems to be closed whenever I pass by the museum, but once COVID is all said and done I’ll make sure to pop in to get a closer look at some of the remarkable aircraft on site
G. H.
A good local museum giving context to the areas involvement in WW2. Plenty of exhibits to look at, worth a visit.
s. m.

K. Q.
Wonderful museum very interesting and knowledgeable staff. It's amazing how much memorabilia is packed inside a small museum but still plenty of room to wander around. Well worth visiting
K. J.
A very interesting little museum! I loved the little models they had. The mannequins were a little creepy but that can't be avoided. A little cramped so maybe not good if your claustrophobic. A nice place!
J. R.
Nice interesting collection with friendly and informative staff! Definitely worth a visit and a donation 👍🏻😊
L. S.
Good day out for aeroplane enthusiasts. There seems to be something landing or taking off all the time. The museum is very interesting. Bar/restaurant situated in a lovely art deco hotel. Food is quite basic.
P. S.
Great place to go for a drink and meal and to see some great things and shows
J. B.
Brilliant place. Full of amazing pieces. The staff were so knowledgeable too.
N. S.
Small but very interesting aviation museum. No entrance fee but contributions gratefully accepted. Always a lot of flying going on at Sywell making it a great place for an aviation enthusiast to visit.
M. B.
Really enjoyed going decide well Aerodrome I sat there and watched the brains and had a drink and the food was excellent really good day out
C. N.
Nestled in old nissen huts with authentic appeal. It is a small but rich museum. At the entrance there is a pillbox that keen eyes would notice. It is basically two sections, to the right it's all about the RAF and begins with a display about the his toy of flight. There are bombs, guns, uniforms and a rich trove of aviation equipment. To the left honours the American contribution will a similar vein but curiously more crashed engine parts. A small selection dedicated to German POWs. Attendance is free but I encourage you to donate to keep this treasure alive.
T. B.
We really liked the experience, staff were very helpful, food was good too, couldn't stay in the museum long as it was too hot, but we are planning another visit when it's cooler. Great experience.
S. G.
Nice little museum
N. M.
A wonderful little gem of a place. Full of fascinating items. The people who work there are really friendly and knowledgeable. Can see lots of hard work has gone into this place.
A. P.
One of the most perfect places to spend a day with friends or family! A local venue, too good not to share! Sywell airport is simply perfect! Good food, exquisite architecture, history, museum, picnic areas!! Fabulous!
E. T.
We run a business that keeps us VERY BUSY during the summer months. One of our deliveries this year was to Sywell and we decided we would visit the museum when we got quiet. So looked up your opening times and you are closed for the whole winter.
d. m.
Great staff, very knowledgeable, and lot's of amazing artifacts
G. S.
Museum is absolutely full of interesting historical, often unique, artefacts and explanations.
Recommended a visit for anyone interested in aviation history in and around Northamptonshire.
I found particularly interesting and moving the original squadron boards from WW2 Kings Cliffe.
Thank you to all the volunteers who run the museum.
D. D.
Excellent small museum with some unique and extremely interesting artifacts. Very friendly staff, coupled with the nearby airfield where we saw the arrival of both a two seater Spitfire and Me109.
K. E.

d. t.
Nice place to go and watch planes and be among other people without even having to leave your car
R. L.
Great, little museum that is packed with lots of historical information from the both world wars. Staff were very friendly and helpful and made it a fun experience for the kids.
S. O.
Great little gem tucked away at the entrance of Sywell Airport car park. Its stuffed full of all pieces of air craft history in particular covering the 2nd. WW. Take a break and head over to the Aviator cafe or just park yourself on one if the benches overlooking the fields and the runway beyond. Aircraft always taking off and landing. Take a picnic.
T. K.
This place is truly an absolute GEM of a place, set in a small hangar type building at the Sywell aerodrome in Northamptonshire between Northampton and Kettering. The displays are magnificent and filled with memorabilia from the local aviation history of Northamptonshire. The staff are all volunteers of all ages from 16 to ex RAF members in their Seventies. Make time to visit this brilliant air museum.
S. F.
Amazing display...far more items than expected. Wonderfully fascinating for grandparents and 7 and 5 year olds! Engaging, fascinating staff too. Found it really moving.
P. C.
Good day out free displays sometimes with the blades. Red arrows always fly over when in area
n. h.
Lovely little museum that's bursting at the seams with interesting stuff.
F. L.
This gets give stars from me as an excellent small museum. If you're looking for spectacular, or somewhere to keep the kids occupied, try elsewhere. This is well displayed aviation bric-a-brac, mostly military. I'm pretty sure it's run by volunteers and funded by donations. Not pretentious, but a labour of love.
This corner of Sywell Aerodrome is shared the tge Aviator Hotel, with its excellent 1920's architecture and décor. Its worth a look, with a bar and restaurant used by everyone from tourists to visiting pilots.
J. “. D.
Great little museum, entrance is free although a donation is welcome. You can get a view of the airfield from the adjacent car park and if you are lucky see the "Grace Spitfire" which is housed alongside it, fly. The Aviator Hotel next door is a fantastic 1920/30s Art Décor building you can get meals and tea or coffee inside. Or you can walk up to the "Pilots Mess" café near the control; tower for tea/coffee cake or a full fry-up.
P. C.
Excellent full of interesting bits and pieces as well as some aircraft cockpits

Great day out watching the planes, especially the spitfire and jet plane going up today. The museum is great to visit. Sometimes there is a car or bike club in the carpark. The Aviator and The Officers Mess do great food and drinks.
