Reviews of Modern Art Oxford
T. H.
The fact that this place is free is ridiculous. Let me charge my phone for free, delicious cake which was very affordable, but mostly the art space is amazing. And free... I imagine you can also come again and again cus it keeps changing what's on, from celebrated artists to newbies. Wow.
J. H.
Every visit to MOMA is a treat and their latest "star" exhibition is no exception. I regularly see world class artists displaying their art and get to experience things I would never normally see. From paintings to sculpture to video installations to things I don't even know how to categorise it I feel lucky indeed
More than that my three children have visited with me since they could walk and so MoMA has been responsible in giving them an art education. It showed them that art is something to be noticed and felt, it's never dull even when you think it's dull!!!
So I say everyone should go
The cafe is delicious too
J. “. K.
Pleasantly surprised to find this Modern Art Museum which is more an exhibition venue but the artwork is world class (I recognise the lions from Tate Modern)
T. S.
A great place to see some exciting modern art. This gallery hosts one exhibition at a time with no permanent displays. Free to enter with a cafe where you can buy reasonably priced food including home made cake.
M. K.
The Ruth Asawa exhibition is wonderful. Her story is incredibly interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole exhibition. We were welcomed in to the gallery, and all staff were very friendly. Next time I'm in Oxford, i will return.
M. S.
Ruth Asawa's exhibition was fantastic. Great art. I hadn't realised she passed away a few years ago in her 80s. Her work lead me to expect her to be a young woman. Very inspiring.
M. M.
This place is free to visit but I only need to spend around 30 mins here. Just two large exhibition spaces with a couple of small rooms in between.
Currently one of the large exhibition spaces showcases an art installation by Mariana Castillo Deball. The second large space explores themes inspired by the Coronavirus pandemic, in particular what it means to breathe.
W. E.
Good exhibition space and a variety of exhibitions, all free, throughout the year; also talks, music and film. I have enjoyed a number of exhibitions over the years. There's a café, which is fine for hot drinks, but the limited menu isn't very exciting. The welcome desk is very helpful, and there is a small shop. There are 2 entrances - one on Pembroke Street and the other on St. Ebbe's, which is more wheelchair accessible. It is the only space in Oxford dedicated to contemporary art and culture.
R. J.
Small museum near the west gate shopping center. Free entry. During my visit they featured sculptures, tapestry and prints from one artist. Art is displayed with good lighting and text that accompany the art are informative. They also offer workshop and have a small shop and large cafe.
A. B.
I visited on a Sunday and it was a nice art gallery. The entrance hall was beautifully designed. I didn’t think much of the exhibition itself, yet the Museum looked well looked after, fresh and I can imagine would be a great place for other exhibitions. The coffee shop was cool and modern- definitely somewhere I would take my laptop and get on with work.
I. B.
Nice intimate space which resulted in a lovely artsy day out. The staff are very knowledgeable and want to educate you on the works. It is a very interesting place and hosts a ever changing array of different artists I would not have knowledge of otherwise.
G. J.
This is pretty good exhibition space. To be honest I think you need to visit when there is an exhibition on that really takes your fancy. For the record, the exhibit that looks like a loom was done by visiting school parties. Probably, it'll be up for the Turner prize next year.
K. H.
It's a fantastic gallery with great curatorial focus. The rooms upstairs are always beautifully presented. Ruth Asawa show excellent.
C. B.
Really nice little gallery. Went there with kid of 5 years who also loved it. Nice creative space.
L. W.
Modern art, free exhibitions, decent coffee, tasty cakes... What's not to like??
j. g.
We had a fancy dress party here one Sat night - team couldn't have been more helpful and amenable - as a result a great party in a fab venue 👍❤️
S.
Quiet gallery, great collection, it was a bit warmer than I expected. The exhibit they have on right now is really interesting and new, and I feel like they know what quality art really mean because I'm not an expert in that, and I can understand well with the blurb beside and get what the pieces are trying to express. Shop is cool and they have quirky jewelries. I'll definitely want to work at their cafe space!
S.
The Modern Art Gallery is a small free gallery in the centre if Orford with two large exhibition spaces and a couple of smaller connecting rooms.
There is a small shop and popular cafe on the ground floor too.
It’s not the most extensive of spaces but often has a interesting collection that is well worth a look during a visit to the city.
M. F.
A lovely space. The exhibition is very well priced and worth the money, plus there is a free to enter space. The gallery staff are so polite and friendly. I can't wait to come back again.
D. B.
Nice, interesting museum. Really enjoyed the pieces shown.
M. W.
So lucky to have such a brilliant gallery in Oxford. They definitely have their finger on the pulse of British art
Y. W.
Lovely snug local gallery. Staff are always so friendly and knowledgeable.
P. H.
Interesting exhibition but not one I really enjoyed. Nice cafe and shop.
M. P.
Chill atmosphere for having a lunch by yourself while reading a book. I got a delicious salad for £7.50
C. T.
A great gallery space, really friendly and helpful staff, and an amazing collection. Great for little ones too as our 28 month old would attest to.
M. H.
Great little art space, nice cafe, would be even better if it was bigger
P. R.
Nice place. Anish Kapoor exhibition was good, but nothing else in exhibition despite a few blank walls stuff could have been displayed on
Decent cafe.
M. B.
A very interesting small museum in Oxford. 👍
Founded in 1965, Modern Art Oxford hosts acclaimed exhibitions, artist commissions, events, and promote the importance of contemporary visual culture as an agent of social change. 🏛️
R. B.
Great gallery. Admission free.

With lock-down’s ease offering up old places of refuge, it was a joy to return today to the small café inside the Modern Art Oxford exhibition space.
Being too late in the day for me to be drinking Coffee, a large cup of Hot Chocolate provided a really tasty treat, made more special by being topped with a deliciously thick foam.
R. B.
This is just a review of the Cafe as I did not visit the gallery on this occasion, although I have seen some very interesting exhibits there in past years.
The cafe has excellent coffee and you might like to try the home-made brownies. However, the hot food is a bit disappointing. Not a wide choice and it is warmed up in a micro-wave for you. And 'warm' is the operative word - it's not hot.
J. L.
Cafe in the lobby is really nice for some coffee, chilling and working. The pastries are also good! Not exactly a place to go if you're looking for individual desks - it's more like sitting on picnic benches. Only giving a 4 stars as the opening hours are fairly short.
Otherwise the shop next to the cafe has some interesting books on not just modern art but photography too.
D. H.
There was this creative and interactive display in there that we quite enjoyed.
M. M.
Great coffee and food selection :3
Z. X.
The exhibition was fantastic
Kapoor showed an excellent use of colour texture and tone and by combining paint and sculpture created stunning pieces of art
G. C.
It's a good place to visit, but the free to enter part is limited to a single small exhibition space at the moment.
L. J.
Lovely small museum, free admission
L. R.
Everytime we visit Oxford, we find dome amazing exhibition at this venur
B. E.
Big space, light airy, disappointed there weren't more areas/exhibitions.
t.
A must visit when going to Oxford. Have always taken my kids there from age 4 or 5. You can always see something cool, interesting, thought provoking, generally provocative etc. Cafe is good; a flat white and a cheese and leek toastie will absolutely sort you out. Lovely arty vibes and shop has loads of local niche pieces. One of my favourite corners of Oxford. It's free to enter but I'm telling you to donate. Do it! :)
P. V.
Small but neatly formed Oxford's modern art museum provides themed exhibitions and showcases emerging young talent. Its not a huge space so don't expect to be there more than 30-45 minutes but what's there is always something interesting to see.
B. l.
Free entry and quiet exhibition space that could rival some of London’s. Well worth a visit, the shop is teeny tiny selling a eclectic range of greetings cards, jewellery, books, and kids stuff. Coffee shop welcoming also
C. C.
A really lovely gallery and cafe is really nice but it wasn't as child friendly as I expected. I wouldn't recommend going there for the gallery with children unless there is an exhibition that children can interact with or enjoy. I went when the gallery was mostly tapestries and was very dull for a 2/3 year old!
A. B.
Very nice staff very polite and helpful
G. E.
Only went to the cafe on this visit, but the food was delicious.
D. G.
An artistic space that doesn't shy away from display important works on topics such as environmentalism. The works of student artists are also represented here. I've yet to try the cafe, and will update this review accordingly when I do.
D. D.
Cool Exhibitions
Go to explore art!
G. J.
Quite expensive but a beautiful art space so can appreciate that money is going to the upkeep in this prime location.
A. D.
Small but full of interesting art. If you’re just visiting Oxford for a day, I would suggest skipping Modern Art, but if you have some extra time on your hands it’s worth the stop.
F. L.
There is always something thought-provoking and beautiful to look at. Not everything grabs you, but that’s why people have different tastes.
Definitely worth it for some of the stunning work, and the café’s tea and cakes are too bad either!
B. F.
The shows are hit and miss as ever with contemperary art, but anh I've seen have always be well currated. Surprising how much space there is upstairs. Always worth a visit when in town.
Y. Y.
It always has good exhibitions, but I wish there was more everytime. The bookshop is small with some crafts that are beautiful in general.
R. S.
Delicious salad and tart together with really good wine makes this the cafe to go to in Oxford. The lady running it was really busy but very friendly when we chatted. Highly, highly recommended.
S. B.
MAO had Anish Kapoor,s new Paintings on .
Absolutely wonderful place.
J. C.
huge variance in artwork quality but hey it's an art museum, you don't have to like it all
T. S. H.
Contemporary art gallery . Best in the area .
G. M.
Free entry, well managed for CoVid. A small gallery showcasing a single artist.
A. P.
Lovely venue, interesting exhibitions Claudette Johnson was fabulous. Oh to be able to draw that well! Truly gifted.
A. R.
Nice exhibitions, nice gallery, accessible place and near the city centre so it's not hard to find. Very busy on Sundays though.
C. A.
7.50 for a lunch including salmon, full plate of salad, bakery treat and hot drink. Food and tea was delicious and refreshing, and the staff was super friendly.
J. B.
Wasn't very big. Recommended donation of a fiver made me expect more than what was there
l. s.
... always they have first class exhibitions.... everything's beautiful arranged in generous spaces.... polite and helpful staff.... super coffee shop
t. a.
Often great shows like Jenny saville, but not much on at the moment. Great cafe, well stocked gift shop
R. P.
The art gallery itself is very pretty, but not that big, the art itself was less modern than I was hoping, but perhaps went a little over my head
j. h.
Nice little gallery
A. R.
Great exhibit and free to get in. I will definitely be going back to see future exhibitions.
V. N.
Really nice art gallery hidden in the centre of Oxford. Voluntary entry fee and nice collection of art. We loved the concrete design of gallery.
z.
Not a very big gallery, but they carry a very decent cafe inside.
A. C.
A fabulous coversion of an old brewery building. Worth looking up. Interesting tapestries when we visited.
S. G.
Always worth keeping tabs on the shows here. Good specialist art books. Good cafe.
G. C.
Interesting exhibitions, shop is good for as art books and gifts, cafe is reasonably priced and had a good selection of drinks and food.
b. r. w.
Great place.but you need to just step back and take time looking at the art
R. P.
Great gallery with frequently changing exhibitions, great cafe and kid friendly activities!
N. B.
Worth visiting regularly like most modern art there the good and the bad. You can't please all of the people all of the time....
刘.
Wonderful free exhibiton, friendly staff. The only thing is the toilet is not enough.
J. G.
Good and varied selection of arts, worth visiting every few months - sometimes you'll be in for 20 mins and sometimes two hours.
J. W.
Great place, art-wise. Cafe served good coffee but staff were a bit cold.
J. B.

J. C.
We went to an opening here and loved the show!
B. P.
First visit here. Loved the Nicholas Party exhibition, so vibrant and such bold colours!
S. R.
Expected to see the Oxford Spanish Dictionary on display. A little foreign art would have been nice. Overall 5 stars.
J. S.
After several previous visits , finally an exhibition that was really worth it and made the building do justice
M. G.
Took my wife here a while ago. We had a great day here together, and the fact it's completely free was a real bonus.
H. B.
tends to have limited showing of new art that is difficult for a non-artist to understand. But worth a visit if you are an art critic - art follower.
K. P.
This place is a must! Very nice, super clean, would definitely recommend for everyone!
v. m.
Lovely gallery with interesting exhibitions. Very friendly people.
