Reviews of Coalport China Museum
G. G.
Went here with the children as a start point for the tar tunnel tour. Would recommend buying an ironbridge pass which gives entry to all ironbridge museums making it a cheap day out. Well displayed prices of China with a lot of information regarding the history of the site, ownership of buildings over the years and the industry itself. Easy to understand information and lots of workshops for the children, spent a few hours here, myself and children loved it.
C. B.
Spent an afternoon going round the museum as was a rainy day. Thoroughly enjoyed, loved the exhibits, loved the original buildings. Couple of people working explaining their craft. Ate at the cafe good meal.
D. H.
This museum is part of the extensive Ironbridge Gorge Museum's that stretch along the Ironbridge Gorge and is a history of pottery and ceramics that give a indepth account stretching back many year's to the Industrial revolution and even beforehand. The staff are friendly and helpful and your able to wander through the museum to view the exhibitions at your own pace and read the various points of information about all the pottery, ceramics and china production over the the years .The location is In the picturesque village of Coalport with its own extensive history and is close to Ironbridge and Jackfield and sits along the river bank. Plenty of pubs and restaurants nearby and Blist Hill Victorian Town is five minutes by car,so everything is in a good location with plenty of places to stay nearby. A excellent gift shop is also situated within the museum at good prices. Overall a excellent museum.

To be honest we kind of stumbled across the coalport China museum but what a happy find. We had tea in the YHA then went into the museum. Special mention to Julia who made us feel very welcome and was very informative notnjust on the museum, but on the local area aswell. The museum is really well laid out, lots of interactive interest too with teacups placed on information boxes giving humorous information and anecdotes to buscuit ware painting and china making demonstrations. Definitely a recommendation.
P. J. H.
Really nicely laid out museum telling and presenting the story of Coulport, from it's beginnings in the 17th century to 1928 when it moved production to Stoke on Trent.
Spoke to the curator, who was a mine of fascinating information.
Recommended to anyone who loves history.
R. C.
Lovely small museum set in the original factory.
I'd highly recommend the walk from here to the tile museum at Jackfield, by crossing the Severn at the ped footbridge by the Boat PH. Which is worth a stop as is the Halfmoon PH and Black Swan PH.
Great day out by the picturesque river with such a incredible history.
K. C.
A wonder land into the past. The kilns and pottery was an exciting experience for me. I loved the history on the tiles and ceramics. Definitely going back
R. C.
Excellent museum. You get to tour a kiln, you can paint your own pottery, and visit many other demonstrations. The staff are great. Lisa sold us our tickets and gave us advice about combined tickets to other great attractions in the area that we didn’t know about. Everyone there is friendly and welcoming.
M. t.
I walk from Madeley area going to China Museum in Coalport just take a photo outside Museum and never came in so I did walk to jackfield and ironbridge as well take lovely photos.
T. R.
Interesting, well displayed. But not really our thing. Fine china is a thing of the past.
J. T.
I wish we'd had more time to walk alongside the canal and take more time in the museum. Our daughter loved the teacup trail!
Everyone we met across the whole selection of ironbridge museums was excellent and keen to share information with us enthusiastically
R. S.
Fascinating museum with amazing exhibits. Family workshops during the holidays. Only planned to come for an hour but ended up spending half the day there! Really enjoyable experience.
m. b.
Interesting museum to visit if you love pottery.
Ю. М.
My children made very nice pigs 🐖
C. W.
Brilliant insight into how the industry worked through the ages. Extremely interesting. Particularly enjoyed the workshop and the lady was extremely knowledgeable and gave us an awful lot of information.
M. H.
Great visit today. Set aside an hour or 2 to have a stroll around. Staff are very pleasant and knowledgeable. Great gift shop (needs magnets as I collect them). There is a nice coffee shop near by too. Activities for children to do too. The site is mostly wheelchair friendly with flat areas or an accessible lift.
P. S.
Interesting to visit indeed, realy enjoyed our visit and look into the history, kids can paint, check for details and openings this time of year, cafe but parking charges will most go again
K. P.
Beautiful place to visit. Free disabled parking and wheelchair access throughout. Parking tickets can be used for the rest of the day in all the other ironbridge museums. Jackfiled tile.. Etc. No cafe but there is on located at the youth hostel opposite. Nice gift shop.
L. W.
Great place to visit. Only went into the shop as I had a dog with me, it's dog friendly but the museum isn't. Lovely walking around there. Friendly staff too.
J. P.
The visit was interesting but cut very short even though we were a coach party of 41. We arrived at 3.50pm and they closed the doors at.4.00pm. We were followed round with someone locking up the doors behind us. Look at the lost trade from the museum shop!
S. G. P.
Fabulous look at commercial pottery making from a by gone era. With great staff having a hands on approach to showing what it was like in a ceramic factory
C. M.
Very interesting museum, great live demonstrations and interactive exhibits. We loved going into the bottle kilns and walking along the canal. Two brilliant pubs nearby as well.
I. F.
Lovely museum and cafe! The staff were all very welcoming and couldn’t be more helpful, it was clean and well organised. It’s a lovely place to walk to or from and the little ducklings on the old canal were just the icing on the cake!
The cafe was only manned by one waiter when we went but it was a quiet day and he was very much under control. He served us quickly and apologised for the thirty second (if that) wait we had. Our coffee was lovely and our little dog felt very spoilt by the affection he showed her. Thank you for a lovely little cafe, proud to live locally!
M. S.
OMG so much to see and look at in this lovely museum
J. S.
Really interesting place. Not a huge museum but a great bonus place to visit if you've already paid for the ironbridge museums pass.
R. W.
This is yet another special experience to enjoy around Ironbridge. Time speeds by, as you relive history of the life of the community, involvement in the skills of those working for Coalport and see the result of their expertise. Chance to refresh at the café and during certain times, a visit to the 'open' Tar Tunnel. The walk is worth it, even if it is closed.
J. F.
Lots of interesting facts and history. Great, knowledgeable guides available to ask questions. Well stocked gift shop also.
L. K.
Lovely visit, we were approached by a tour guide who was free and he completely changed our views, he was so informative and we had a great time learning about all the processes, we really appreciated this - thank you
L. E.
Lovely little museum in a beautiful location. Some amazing pieces of decorated china and interesting displays of how it used to be.
S. S.
Great place, really interesting and all the staff are so.friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.
A. J.
We bought the visitor tickets that allow you to go to all the museum's in the Ironbridge area. We all enjoyed the visit.
B. M.
In an industrial context this museum is set in a very significant area and is well worth a visit. It is one of about a dozen museums that you can buy a universal ticket for and on this basis the cost is reasonable against paying for each individually. The items on display are of good quality and you can also take a tour to learn about the production process.
H. M.
Fantastic location and absolutely FASCINATING China museum. Well worth the visit, especially with the friendly staff there too! 👍 👍 👍
A. M.
Surprisingly a good museum. A good mix of exhibits and interesting history into the history of the China production and the areas history
A. C.
Using the passport system this was a lovely stop-off. Staff very friends and knowledgeable.
J. B.
Really great day making clay animals
G. B.
If you are into China this is a really fascinating place to visit showing the history and maintaining some of old skills
S. D.
Really hidden little gem. Loved the history behind the making of coalport pottery. The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. There is a car park it's pay and display. When yov'e purchased your ticket you can keep using it for 12 months. I would recommend a visit.
P. C.
Very interesting visit. The museum has endured many floods over the few years but you wouldn't be able to tell.
D. D.
Interesting museum to visit with rooms of old tea cups to begin before exploring the estate and seeing the different rooms, workshops and kilns used in the production process. Worth visiting when busy when there are more staff and demonstrations
A. T.
Interesting and educational, some beautiful pottery on show
J. L.
A lovely quiet museum, which takes you though the history of Coalport China and how hard the conditions were that men and women had to work in, the staff are great and explain how the China was painted before the introduction of transfers. And the have some impressive displays. A lovely museum in the valley of iron.
P. M.
Very interesting museum good displays informative staff.
S. T.
A great place to visit. Sadly, they had recently had severe flooding weeks before our visit, so at £10 per head, felt we were short changed. 3 of the demonstration process areas were closed, and when we paid, we were then told they would be open Next Week!! .
The staff were wonderful.
All things considered, we are happy to contribute to this amazing piece of history and enjoyed our visit. We also took a walk along the waterway, and towards the Tar Tunnel. (also told was opening next week!)
Check out in advance, about online tickets, combining a few heritage sites all in. Might save paying for them all separately.
We would definitely re visit.
P. B.
The whole experience of all the Museums was amazing. Thank you.
N. M.
Lovely walk along the river, small museum but interesting.
A. F.
Lovely displays and very interesting history of fine China production in the UK
a. c.
Interesting if you like learing about china.
B. H.
A great display of local and in many cases, countrywide history.
R. C.
Very exciting walking into a kiln.
G. B.
Quiet, lovely glass shops, and cafe, very quiet
S. W.
Well worth a short visit. A wide variety of types of exhibit with something for everyone.
M. W.
Great experience, very informative
M. G.
Fantastic museum - wonderful collections of Caughley and Coalport porcelain on display, and great to walk inside the bottle kilns. Definitely worth a visit.
P. V.
It was Brilliant.
Worth a study tour - to understand how the town was once booming and then the equation changed due to railways coming in. Over a period the ceramic industry here died.
Sad story.
All the volunteers were quite helpful in explaining the manufacturing process.
The glass blowing was excellent.
P. M.
I love this museum. The chat about the saga makers bottom knocker was very informative. You need to find out what this means for yourself. Definitely worth the visit. We have in the past enjoyed making our own clay models too.
S. B.
Fantastic museum you could lose a day in there fascinating old photos lots of history on the products and local area just a shame the tar tunnel was closed.
S. M.
Such a different museum then I expected it to be. So worth the visit! The demonstrates are amazing and everyone is so welcoming and knowledgeable
S. G.
Lovely historic place to visit.
K. D.
Amazing place to visit, so much to see & learn from this glimpse into our rich heritage. Well worth the visit.
C. F.
Very interesting. Can paint your own ceramic item that are all hand made on site. In total probably spent 30mins looking around the museum and a good 45min painting in the clay workshop. Great for both kids and adults.
A. J.
Amazing place and more to see than you think. Loved being able to see the bottle kiln and there are demonstrations of different pottery practises. Worth a visit and just around the corner from the tar tunnel. Also you can see the bottom of the hay lift that's in blists hill.
P. K.
It's an interesting place to visit, but some of the exhibits feel a bit dated.
R. N.
Great area yo explore.
M. G. C.
We greatly enjoyed this relatively small museum. There are quite a lot of steps in different sections, but there is wheelchair access wherever possible. We went during half term, when there was a "make your own" paid activity in progress with air drying clay. The staff are all friendly and I was astonished by the communal basin in the ladies' toilet, which would easily pass for a town fountain. But it wasn't working when I was there. The Museum make their own items for visitors to decorate (a small charge, aprons and paint provided), and sell finished items in the shop at reception.
Ticket prices include one year's return, like many of the other 9 Ironbridge Museums, but the only refreshments are at the Youth Hostel café next door, and rather expensive. Car parking is shared by the two buildings. I believe the Tar Tunnel is at the other side of the site, but we didn't see it. The glassworker who has a studio on site wasn't open, but has a display at the entrance and a studio and shop in the nearby village.
m. h.
Very interesting museum next to the river Severn. Lots of history of the area of Coalport and very nice shop. The cafe at the youth hostel is well worth a visit, nice coffee and cake, plus dog friendly too.
P. E.
A really good historic journey through Coalport China's history with lots of examples some have such intricate patterns and such fine artistic brush work. Lots to see. There's also the human cost shown with the Victorian work conditions and the kiln stacking heavy work, and health problems with the lead based decorations. Well worth a visit. Get the historic passport for all the sites n the historic trail it's the best value.
a. a.
A good and quiet place to spend some time
N. D.
Good visit only about an hour walk round but interesting to see and good countryside around it.
R. a. B. M.
Fascinating visit. Helpful people. Some of demos not going.
T. W.
Nice little museum, they have some displays with the history of China pottery and work rooms where you can watch the pottery being made and painted. There is also a couple of arearz for children, one of which is where they can have a go at painting.
M. O.
Really worthwhile visiting this museum. Our guide, Pat Bracegirdle was exceptional. Amazing display of Coalport and Caughley china. However, rather disconcerting to learn of the appalling conditions workers endured to produce such beautiful objects.
P. M.
Very interesting and staff helpful.
M. H.
A very good niche museum run by a fabulous team. Shows nicely the operation of the site through the 19th century. Be prepared for the parking charge. There's also a cafe operated by the YHA on the same site.
D. H.
Another must see museum in the historically most significant Ironbridge area. Thoroughly recommended
A. L.
A great museum with something for everyone. See beautiful historical pieces of china, discover the history of the Coalport works and feel part of it by watching the artisans of today the workshops.
P. R.
This place is great we will be going again in Easter 2020 you can buy a combined ticket that lasts a year (BUY IT) this place has plenty to see and nice things to buy YMCA Postal is close by so you can visit all 7 iron bridge attractions on the ticket in a couple of days good value for money
M. C.
Ok for China buffs, but didn't float our boat. However, local scenery made the trip well worth while, with myriad shades of colours, superb.
h. E.
Great museum .well worth a visit . The history of china making in the Severn Gorge.
D. G.
OK but do not offer conssions no access to upper floors for wheel chair users or prams /buggies
D. H.
Good social history. And if you like China cups you will be in heaven!
S. P.
If bone China and it's history is what you are interested then this place is a must. Disappointed that the glass blowing and pottery workshops weren't operation 9am during my visit
J. a.
Sounds boring but my kids 5 and 10 like it here, as get to clay model for small fee and paint clay flowers for 50p to keep or paint paper plates for free. Cafe next door and nice walks, canal next to it with bridge over river to maws craft centre and tile museum. All in lovely settings. Tar tunnel also next door and blist hill near by, shuttle bus runs to all, and is free with ironbridge passport. 40 percent off passport with flexcard/TLC card.
M. K.
Interesting place to see, some of the items on display are a joy to see.
The staff were friendly and very helpful with plenty of knowledge on the works and its history.
S. B.
