Reviews of Jackfield Tile Museum
M. C.
Fantastic experience, very well laid out. Friendly and helpful staff. We had a great visit, I use a mobility scooter and my daughter uses a wheelchair. We we able to see almost everything. The one thing we would suggest is Subtitles and BSL Interpretation on the videos. Apart from that one suggestion it was a first class experience. We had cake and drinks in the cafe which were really delicious and again very helpful and friendly staff member! Definitely worth a visit. I would suggest if you are visiting more than one museum in Ironbridge, get the year pass, it is well worth it.

Enormous collection of decorative tiles. Many art works displayed perfectly in room after room. Large collection of encaustic tiles (decorated by “burning in” colours as an inlay using coloured clays) and an extensive collection of timeless geometric designs, artistic individual tiles, large colourful decorative tile panels, elaborate and protruding relief designs, entire rooms such as a tiled butchers, a pub, an underground station tunnel with train sound effects, highly desirable art deco tiles including high lustre technical finished tiles, islamic art inspired tiles and more…Most definitely worth the drive - a world class collection of decorative tiles.
B. Y.
Nice gallery and front office staff was so helpful and nice. I got so amazing tea pot stand for my mom. The collection of the tiles I was fall in loved.
J. S.
Great visit to the Jackfield Tile Museum at Ironbridge. Stunning collection of tiles demonstrating fantastic making skills and the development of artistic flare. Fabulous 😍
J. P.
We really enjoyed the tile museum. There are some fabulous tiles through the years. We especially enjoyed the exhibition.
H. M.
An intriguing maze of tiles, it's use of space and layout makes every moment enjoyable enjoyable all ages. One moment your in a pub, the next your in a law firm and then the next Covent garden!
D. H.
Brilliant museum charting the history of Tile making in Jackfield with a lovely little Cafe situated under the museum offering soups, confectionary, drinks, tea's and coffee and cake.
The Peacock cafe is dog friendly and has a very art deco appearance with friendly helpful staff and easy disabled access. Well worth a visit and they still make the most wonderful decorative tiles on site and decorative tiles can still be purchased within the museum.
R. C.
Lovely small museum set in the original factory.
I'd highly recommend the walk from here to the China museum at Coalport, by crossing the Severn at the ped footbridge by the Boat PH. Which is worth a stop as is the Halfmoon PH and Black Swan PH.
Great day out by the picturesque river with such a incredible history.
M. S.
If you like tiles it's definitely a place to visit. You can explore the different influences be it the medieval inspired tiles in the mid 19th century or the art nouveau or deco of the early 20th century (my favourite). Also some art and glass making workshops and galleries. Nice small cafe as well.
M. L.
Found it very interesting with so many different styles of tile.
Informative history about tiles and the factories in the area.
Maybe not so interesting for children but there were a few things for them to do.
Cafe looked good but visited late in the day so was closed when left.
Friendly staff.

Fantastic little museum. Spent nearly two hours here. Beautifully displayed and most interestingly written descriptions I've seen in a museum in a long time. 10% discount if you are English Heritage member. Can also buy a bundled ticket which gets you entry to the other museums associated with the area
C. B.
Loved it, informative. Beautiful tiles. Set them out in the different areas where they were used. Loved they are arranged in an original building. Had lunch in their cafe The Peacock. Limited menu but enjoyable and reasonably priced. Choice of quiche, croques, sandwiches or cakes. Staff friendly and efficient.
A. R.
Good carpark that must have something that clocks how long you have stayed when paying the parking when you leave.
The Museum is big and spacious, full of good interesting facts. I wouldn't like to guess how many tiles are here but all beautiful in many ways. Displays fantastic.
Good cafe, nice staff. Reasonable. Good toilets. The buildings are worth looking at even though old i prefered the old to the modern Fusion building, far more character.
D. H.
First, walk there, its no more than a 20 minute stroll from the long stay car park (far side of the bridge to Ironbridge itself). Don't expect acres of buildings to wonder through, but it is an enjoyable diversion for an hour perhaps two if you like browsing shops and a drink at the cafe.
In regard to the staff, I loved them. Very friendly and helpful. The content of the museum is well laid out, and you get the feeling they have packed as much in as the rooms allow. Tiles are still made on site. Finally, I only went to this attraction but if you are going to a number of attractions be sure to check out the multi-location tickets. I think I'll be back for the Victorian Village.
S. B.
We had a very enjoyable visit to this museum which is dedicated to the history of tile making in the area.
Many examples of beautiful tiles that the factories produced are on display, and you'll probably leave with an appreciation and respect for the role the humble tile has played in our lives.
S. T.
Really interesting museum. Now know a lot more about making tiles than I did!The displays of the offices and showroom of the factory as it would have been were good . Cafe is great with really nice coffee and cakes.
P. H.
Brilliant - period photos with friends, very helpful & fun!!
R. W.
Prepare to spend most of the day here. What artists. What craftspeople. What employers to work for. What a community to be a part of. The Church is worth a visit, as is the cafe.
Once again, lovely people to make your visit as enjoyable as possible.
C. W.
An excellent place to visit. The car park is a bit rough. When I visited the car park charging machine was not working. Please check if it is working when you visit. There is a small Cafe. The museum is too dark in places and when I visited it was stiflingly too hot. However, the exhbits were interesting. I think doors should have been proped open to avoid constant touching of door handles. A could few rooms demonstrated how tiles were used commercially and in the home. Locate these rooms as they are more interesting.
D. J.
Great museum highlighting the incredible history of this tile manufacturer. Part history museum, part art museum, all amazing. Allow 90-120 minutes to take it all in.
T. M.
Nice small museum in the original factory.
Recommend the walk to the China museum at Coalport, by crossing the Severn at the footbridge by the Boat PH. Which is worth a stop as is the Halfmoon pub and Black Swan pub.
Great day out and incredible history.
L. P.
We enjoyed the trip to the museum, small but interesting, learned about the tile industry in this area. Displays and artifacts held our attention, the collection of tiles and drawings were beautiful. There is a gift shops, a small cafe, along with a separately owned restaurant. We also did a tile painting workshop and collected our fired tile later in the week. Car park is adequate, lovely location by the river and local pubs.
A. N.
It is a really interesting museum. It worth every penny. You can a chance to paint your own tile. There is a small cafe to have tea and snack. For me, It is the best one of the Ironbridge Museums. You will not regret to visit here.
R. C.
Well worth the visit, Get yourself an annual pass so you can visit other museums and also get discount on food and drinks
R. P.
Lovely place to visit, there's lots to see, and learned a lot. (My second visit).
R. C.
Loads of workshops, a museum, a cafe, artisan craft and art studios. Parking very easy and free, great location.
D. L.
Of all the places and museums around the ironbridge gorge area I did not expect a tile museum to be the most interesting and personal favourite experience. For such mundane objects that are so easy to overlook the range of artistic expression on display is spectacular, ranging through medieval, art deco and contemporary. Maybe not the best place for kids as I imagine it wouldn't necessarily hold there attention. For anyone artistically enclined however I would definitely recommend.
R. C.
Who knew tiles could be so interesting!? Also love the kitty we could take around for the children.
P. M.
I love the tile museum, it is very much a look at social history and the changes to our tastes. Loved creating our own tiles, now just the wait for them to be fired and posted out. This is an extra cost but definitely worth the cost and time.
s.
My 2nd visit. An amazingly good museum of tiles made during the victorian era. Besides displaying individual tiles it also has some tiled rooms, including a mock underground platform. Beautiful work. As a bonus when visiting stay a the best western valley hotel. it originally was the jackfield tileworks owner's house. Still has many of the tiles there.
M. R.
An important national collection that tells the story of the heydays of tile making in the UK. Based in the former Craven Dunnill factory buildings on the banks of the River Severn. Jackfield Tile Museum is one among many museums and attractions around Ironbridge that are based in important historical sites within this area of Shropshire which was so important during the industrial revolution and the development of manufacturing which led to British preeminence and wealth as the Worlds greatest manufacturer and exporter.
As well as the Tile Museum the site is now also once again making tiles. Under the name of Craven Dunnill Jackfield Ltd they specialise in reproducing historical tiling and bespoke art tiling very much in the tradition of the 19th century Craven Dunnill tile making. Factory tours are available and a fascinating look into how the skills of old are combined with the latest technologies to reproduce tiling for the conservation and restoration of some of our most important buildings, maintaining our heritage for future generations.
For anyone with an interest in architecture, interior design, industrial and social history the Jackfield Tile Museum is a priceless resource and a must visit.
L. B.
Really interesting museum. For best value buy the pass.for all the Trusts museums.
S. L.
Some interesting exhibitions of shops etc that display how the tiles manufactured here were used in everyday use, I faintly remember a butchers being like the one on display
S. T.
Lovely museum ,very informative and well laid out ,only issue was the temperature, it was so hot inside I had to skip some stuff to get some fresh air .
P. S.
Brilliant place as my friend and I are both disabled it was great to be able to go and see all the tiles lifts, ramps a very nice café friendly helpful people well done tile museum
M. C.
Very interesting museum. Some fine examples of the tile makers art and lots of information on the manufacturing process.
P. S.
Great museum, incredible look at the history of tiles, well worth a visit 😀
R. D.
Fascinating tile designs.
Worth visiting if you like that sort of thing.
C. I. M.

a. a.
This is a very nice place to visit. Big museum and lots a things to see.
K. B.
A Tile Museum? Who wants to go to a Tile Museum?
I loved it!
Social history > design > technical wizardry!
The entrance to the exhibits is the actual entrance to the back-offices of the original factory - where the clerical/design/management staff would have arrived for work. Where potential new clients were greeted?
The exhibits are wonderful....go there now!
Why only 4 *?
For once I was looking forward to the gift-shop! Nothing of any interest! What a disappointment!
Onsite there is also a working tile factory.
Onsite there is a gallery.
Parking costs £3.50
T. G. N.
Very interesting & well layed out museum in the old tile factory.
M. K.
Amazingly interesting displays . We needed lots of time to look around. Will go again.
A. J.
Excellent museum far more to a tile than you could possibly think 🤔
M. F.
Interesting building but quiet on the day we visited due to the weather. We didn't want to pay for the museum so cant comment on that.
h. E.
Closed at the moment. Hopefully open February 5th. We'll worth a visit really enjoyed the day here
S. B.
Great experience and to learn about the history of the company and about different tiles
A. U.
Brilliant, well worth the visit. Staff very friendly. Worth a return visit.
S. H.
Fascinating range of tiles and interesting story of production
M. B.
If you have the passport worth a visit, pleasant walk from parking near Ironbridge or they have onsite parking
D. J.
Fascinating collection of tiles with a real insight into how and where they were made.
D. R.
Very interesting museum. Lots of displays.
D. H.
Very good. Well worth a visit as part of the total Ironbridge experience. Well recommended to anyone with an interest in GB history and heritage or simply the method and beauty of the production and design of so many tiles displayed.
D. S.
Beautiful examples of amazing tiles. A must visit 👍
M. A.
Fantastic, brilliant displays, interesting history
W. G.
If you are interested in ceramics this is the place for you.it has as the name suggests a great display of tiles, bit for the casual visitor it is not somewhere to go out of your way to visit. But if you are in the area and have an hour to spare why not drop in.
S. A.
A surprisingly interesting building. Much bigger than we were expecting. Good kids' trail too.
D. S.
It was interesting looking at the different tile designs and information boards giving manufacturing details. Would be better if interested in art. Would also have been better if there had been tile making demonstrations.
Y. B.
Absolutely loved this museum. EXTREMELY well laid out. Highly recommended!! Have ordered a mounted tile, awaiting arrival
S. B.
They have some gorgeous tiles to look at and so much information on the types of tiles the history of the area etc you could easily spend 4 hours hear. Lovely friendly staff too
G. P.
Restored complex of buildings including a working ceramics business. Museum fascinating- chance to see tiles in situ, tube station, butchers, pub as well as excellent displays. Pleasant coffee shop in Visitor Centre. Parking currently free. Nearby church with ornate tiled interior seems to be closed.
T. W.
Many interesting elements of how to make tiles and the history of them, interesting kids section, sophisticated tile logging systems accessible to the average viewer. Absolutely loved it.
S. D.
Great for kids. They can create or paint their own tile
B. N.
Wonderful record of the local historic industrial heritage.
S. B.
Wonderful museum with a really fantastic collection of tiles. Not just of interest to a narrow group but really a design tour-de-force. Well worth a visit. If staying in the area probably better to get the museum pass for all 9 gorge museums.
There is also a fantastic seconds shop with amazing tiles! Recommended.
H. J.
Very, very interesting and bigger than I remember - Thank you all - Tile Mural attached
V. W.
More to see than I thought
C. B.
Well worth visiting if in the area. Full of history about tile making etc
N. W.
Nice layout which is wheelchair accessible. Good selection of tiles with information and history. Mainly went to see William Morris tiles. Lovely gift shop and a cafe with a small selection of food. The International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition was also on opposite which was fantastic. The museum was very bizarrely quiet which seemed a shame.
P. B.
What wonderful exhibits. Amazing.place.
N. L.
Great place to visit loved it
A. J.
Great fun, nice staff.
P. P.
Very interesting and informative museum, giving the history of tile making, together with many examples. The reconstructions of shops/ bars are brilliant, as are the large tiled scenes rescued from children’s hospitals. The 4 stars are given instead of 5, as it was all absolutely freezing in the museum!
A. C.
The museum is a great place to visit. It also provides a place to create your own tiles of various sizes. The staff are friendly and have great knowledge of the design and decoration of tiles. Groups and school parties welcome and provided with tuition. Once the tile is completed you own a wonderful piece of art to remind you of your visit. I have been on several school trips and enjoyed every visit and have a collection of tiles. :-) :-) 😁😁
J. D.
First visited 11 years ago and had a private evening tour. Doesn't seem to have changed all that much in the ensuing years. There are tiles, more tiles and then even more tiles!! Bought a joint ticket so did the tour, wouldn't have bothered otherwise.
G. P.
It provided a fascinating insight into the history and technical challenges that were faced in the development of the decorative tiles that adorn many of our Victorian buildings, from the Palace of Westminster to butchers and pubs.
Well laid out and thoroughly enjoyable.
R. P.
Brilliant, spectacular, friendly educational
A. L.
A favourite museum of ours.
Explore the history of tile making and decorating from Roman and Byzantine mosaics to the heyday of the Victorian era. Learn how tiles were produced and see how they adorned houses, shops, churches, hospitals and the London Underground.
Great full scale exhibits. Housed in the old factory.
Beautiful examples of William Morris tiles and their settings. A must for art lovers and anyone who appreciates good design and superb quality.
Super-friendly staff. Clean and well organised. With a cafe and a shop selling products.
Summer holiday workshops allow you a chance to design and paint your own tile. We did ours in 2011 but we will go back again this summer to try again.
J. B.
Interesting displays, steep stairs
L. K.
Beautiful tiles on show. Great exhibition of work. Loved the building & cafe too!
B. P.
Interesting museum, disabled friendly with care. Disabled parking and access. Large loo but not specifically disabled friendly.
Adjoining seconds and hands on potter's shop; child oriented activity room.
Nice little coffee shop with a selection of pottery to purchase.
Worth a visit.
L. P.
Surprisingly interesting museum. Not much interactive exhibits but an amazing range of tiles and techniques and uses on show. The company is still making tiles on the site today and during the week you can see some of the activities in the workshops. We went on a Sunday so missed it! Also during the week the Fusion centre is open, with a variety of artists studios to look around.
R. W.
A very interesting museum tucked away along the river Severn. There is still tiles made here and you can purchase factory seconds at the end of the self guided tour.
Certainly a surprising museum (I didn’t think you could get too excited over tiles) however the workmanship that goes into them is amazing.
J. W.
A lovely day out. Lots to see and you can even make your own decorated tile!
M. S.
Loved this museum. So many great and interesting exhibits. Who knew that China Tiles could be so captivating 😁
D. P.
Like the black cat toy for the kids
As though thousands of tiles entertain adults kids less so
The kids activity area was great and based around mosaics
J. H.
Really interesting. Staff very helpful.
L. P.
Has the potential to be a great museum with the subject matter at hand. Sadly it feels very unloved and old fashioned.
J. K.
If you are interested in art or design this place is a must. The array of tiles is truly awesome.
M. C.
This was the last place we visited after 2 days at the Ironbridge museums. We are definitely gouing to have to come back as this place was fascinating! You really need a good couple of hours to do it justice! The videos on how the tiles were made was absolutely fascinating!
K. H.
This is easily my favourite museum in Ironbridge. Blists Hill May be big and fancy but the tile museum has a superb collection of tiles and is genuinely very interesting. I will visit it again when I get chance which I wouldn’t say about any of the other museums.
C. C.
It's not a very big place but if you are interested in this type of venue it is indeed interesting. Kids can also make their own tiles there which is a fun activity.
G. B.
It's only when you visit here that you realise the incredible contribution this factory made to the development of the UK and many places beyond. Glazed pottery wall and floor tiles became a feature of domestic and commercial properties everywhere during the Victorian era and were produced here in their millions. Often taken for granted, many of these tiles were works of art in their own right. Even if you are not interested in tiles or pottery (like me) you cannot fail to be impressed by this amazing museum.
C. M.
If your into architectural history and arts and crafts, you should really enjoy this place, there's some impressive displays and a working tile manufacturers on site. You can even design and paint your own.
D. R.
You have to be very interested in the heritage of tiles to appreciate fully.
Nice cafe and loos!
A. S.
Really interesting museum and some lovely tiles. You can also decorate a tile in another building on site, which was great for adults and children. Nice cafe also.
K. H.
Fantastic tiles very impressive
A. H.
We see tiles every day in a variety of places. This museum reminded me of the fantastic way in which they have been and are being used, and the ways in which they are made. I thought it would be boring, but it's not!
K. M.
Came to see the River Severn Exhibit showcasing information about the Shad fish, very interesting. Had coffee in the cafe and bought some books in the gift shop
P. E.
A large display of historic tiles of many artistic styles, the Victorians used them widely in lots of buildings from domestic houses to grand palaces to hospitals and even London and other underground and surface railway stations. This museum has examples of all them all, even old nursery rhymes themes, "Little boy Blue" and many others. You could spend all day here.
F. S.
Fab if you like arty tiles
T. F.
Very interesting and eye opening
K. W.
Amazing place. Was surprised at just how interesting it was. The examples of tiles were beautiful. Well worth a visit!
s. w.
A hidden gem, well worth a visit, nice modern cafe clean and tidy, there for two or three hours
N. M.
Well worth a visit, combined with the iron bridge you can spend a nice afternoon away from home 🏡
J. a.
Used my passport to go in half term when kids could make a tile. They enjoyed doing quiz sheet, didnt get bored! Big old building to go around looking for clues. Best bit for them was decorating tile, kept them busy for around an hour, and excited to pick up finished tile week later, they will post them. Small tile £5 but will last for ever, they look great! Toilets and cafe shop on site plus other artists have shops there too.
R. M.
Wonderful, friendly staff. Tube-lining tile decorating sessions are great fun for adults and children alike - ideal for during school holidays.
C. H.
This Museum was an unexpected gem to the extent we revisited to see more the following day. There is much, much more to see here than there first appears.
Great cafe too!
A. W.
A fabulous collection of tiles. Lovely tiles available in gift shop.We bought the ticket allowing us entry to multiple sites.
A. S. D.
If you like tiles of any era it's well worth a visit but also if you like industry too.
P. D.
Aesthetically striking, beautiful examples of rich, decorative tiling and, hidden away, a fascinating little video about how tiles are made. Ok, if you don't think tiles are beautiful, you're going to be disappointed, but then, why go to a tile museum?
T. T.
As part of the overall Ironbridge story, an interesting musuem. Don't miss the chance to paint your own tile. It's great creative fun!
A. M.
Really interesting to learn about the history of tile making not just locally but as a technique the world over - well displayed and an interesting collection - a must for anyone with a passing interest in ceramics!and history!
A. P.
Really interesting place. Tiles we still hand made like in the good old times, and products are really made to last.
If you are looking for a really exclusive product, made to last virtually forever, made of honest and real materials, this is the place.
S. B.
Beautiful displays and worth visiting if you are interested in arts and crafts
R. B.
Worth a visit on a rainy day but a little specialised.
M. B.
Love the tiles. Great new addition of one man's tile collect, a great design archive for anyone interested in Victoria decorative design.
R. R.
Excellent place to learn all about tile making. It also has a great exhibition of tile 'fashion' through the ages. Well worth a visit.
C. J.
Really informative place, lot bigger than it looks from the outside. Recommended
E. K.
Nice showcase of the development of tile manufacture at this site. When you are in the neighborhood and have an ample hour to spare. Pay&display parking and cafe on site.

Thougjy there might have been a demo re tile making but it was all a bit boring
C. O.
Small but interesting makes you think about tiles in your home we would have liked to have been able to buy some
L. P.
A good selection of tiles, some in mocked up scenes like a pub and a bathroom. Worth a visit, especially with an Ironbridge passport.
l. r.
I thought it was brilliant. Easy to get round even on my scooter. Lots of colourful designs made today's homes seem bland
S. M.
So much more to see here then I expected! I could spend the whole day here if I could. Fascinating!
K. S.
An interesting trip back through the history of tile manufacturing. Even our 5, 8 and 10 year old kids found parts of it interesting.
C. C.
Interesting and some very nice displays but tile overload by time you get to the end.
S. Y.
This place was amazing... I didn't look very big from the outside. But it was massive with tones of stuff to see and great to buy titles from also
D. W.
Sounds boring but you should go it was fab and so interesting and I'm 50 and brought back tons of memories. The cafe was good and not overpriced
M. W.
Wonderful and amazing collection of tiles, from basic to artistic. History or art buff you'll be well pleased by a visit.
N. R.

(Translated) A surprising place! How it was once possible to paint and create pictures on the proverbial tiles! Colors, colors and a riot of colors !!!

Zaskakujące miejsce! Jak kiedyś potrafiono malować i tworzyć obrazy na przysłowiowych kafelkach! Kolory, kolory i feria barw!!!

(Translated) An interesting museum, but a small, cozy cafe, an art gallery nearby was closed
(Original)
Цікавий музей, але невеликий, затишне кафе, арт галерея поблизу була зачинена

(Translated) It is a very useful space where you can experience a lot of other people's experiences and try it out. It is also recommended to visit once. Also there is a tile making experience. Because it is very enjoyable for children for price, it is good to visit once. I think that if you have a plan, you will have to visit the annual membership card every time you visit. I think it is the end of the tile that can learn the artistry and surprise of the tile
