Reviews of The Commandery

I go here regular to relax. It's a fabulous place with great cakes and coffee. Pete does a wicked salad in the summer and lovely soups in the winter. Gemma make the most amazing cakes. Highly recommended for locals and visitors a like
D. E.
Lovely visit here. Staff were all so kind, helpful and so very obliging. Great to experience a place that is from the Tudor times. Great children's experience and dog friendly for those with well behaved dogs. Cafe staff were wonderful and very helpful.
Great experience for everyone.
C. T. (.
Beautiful building, unfortunately was on a tight schedule to make a proper visit. (2019)
On a visit to Worcester, I had time to visit and view the museum, a wonderful piece of history, looking back at the buildings history, especially at the Civil War. (2022)
J. W.
We went here before intending to visit 2 other historical sites in Worcester and found so much to do that we stayed on for a late lunch at the attached but separate cafe of the same name and went no further! We were the only 2 visitors at the time so had the museum to ourselves which was a wonderful experience. The exhibits are well presented and the Civil War described both in models and by artefacts and written information. The gardens are beautiful although it was a little too cool for sitting out when we started our visit. I think this museum is desperately undersold by the Worcester Museum site and I would urge anyone with an interest in local and English history to step inside a truly amazing building.
A. B.
This is an ideal introduction to the civil war period and the battles of Worcester, however it is geared more to school age visitors. Much more could be made of the building's history and construction. Actual artifacts are rather thin on the ground.
S. J.
Had a fab time with a friend. So much to see and learn about! Sit in the library for a while, reading books. Try on clothes from an era long since past. Wander the gardens, try great food in the cafe, sitting by the canal. Don't forget the gift shop! 😀👍
T. W.
Wonderful place to visit for history buffs
I. P.
Great day out, themed events for the ankle biters
N. T.
Informative, easy to walk around with a nice gift store.
A. W.
The Commandary is simply wonderful. There is so much history in one building, its incredible. Visit it, and take a fantastic voyage through time. It's well set out, and worth every penny. Oh, and if you are off a certain age you can enjoy the confusion on young faces who think that typing on a pc has prepared them to type on a typewriter!
B. M.
Great place to visit. Lots of interesting information about the history of Worcester and the civil war. £14 for 2 adults is a fair price, £5 for an annual pass if you pay council tax in Worcester.
J. B.
I really liked this museum, lots of information about the civil war and Worcester's part in it.
Fairly priced entry. The map to get around it was a little poor, but cost nothing.
I would recommend this place to history fans visiting Worcester.
A. W.
Great museum and a real interest of the battle of Worcester and the English civil war. Great value for money.
E. H.
Awesome experience for kids and parents alike. Loved all the different ways we could interact with the exhibits. A lot of thought has gone into this place. Cafe was delicious too, limited menu but what they did was superb. We'll be back!
N. A.
Great place to spend 2-3 hours. Really interesting, different ways of presenting information and nice thoughtful details. Was good to trigger my school history knowledge!
S. O.
Really enjoyed this visit. Lots of information about the history of Worcester. Can walk round building in your own time and plenty to see. Has a lovely garden which will be nice to sit in the summer. Also has a cafe with seats next to the canal. Did not try the food today but the cafe looked clean and tidy. Car park opposite which can be busy but there are plenty of other car parks around the city. Also close to the cathedral so can visit after. Highly recommend visiting!
G. T.
Great tea and coffee and outstanding cakes, served inside or out. Great outdoor tables in small garden next to canal and lock. Friendly service.
R. P.
Great value at reduced entry fee of £5. Excellent tea in the cafe next to the canal.
A. B.
Went to see outdoor theatre production of Round and Round the Garden by Alan Ayckbourn, Enjoyed it very much, very funny in places, made extra special with a glorious summers evening, we took a picnic, overall a very enjoyable evening.
a. b.
A fantastic well curated historic site. Should be much better publicised in terms of historical significance. Lovely gardens and a cafe on canalside
G. W.
Excellent museum full of civil war items. Well worth the small admission fee.
I. T.
Attended the "2000 years of Living hisory" event at the Commandery in Worcester last weekend with our grandson where there were different re-enactment groups & Military displays covering various historical events from the Vikings to 17 century Pike & Musket drill, American civil war, WW2 encampments. Everyone was very helpful spending time explaining things to our grandson & allowing him to handle items which he loved & made a change to spending time playing games on tablets etc
D. W.
Superb museum covering the English Civil War in Worcester. Great interactive experience which makes the experience all the more enjoyable. Good value for money.
J. L.
We found it difficult to find not knowing Worcester, would have expected a ' brown sign' or something that stood out.
Excellent visit though, very interesting, beautifully organised and displayed.
Good cafe wonderful display of cakes!! Excellent coffee. All in all, brilliant.
L. D.
Its OK for a couple of hours.. lot of history for adults, but for young children not the best because they don't understand.
M.
Very nice trip out at a good price too the staff were more then accommodating and friendly even going the extra mile for my son's arts and crafts genuinely a really nice place and atmosphere love to go back at sometime!
S. F.
Family enjoyed the Halloween trail during half term. Really nice cafe outside too. Will visit again - particularly for an outdoor event. Would have given 5 stars, but boys were disappointed that they completed the trail, but not even so much as a sticker at the end of it! A minor thing to be honest..
r. A.
Coffee shop and lunch Nice location, not much choice on the menu and slow service. It's ok.
C. B.
A great few hours to spend with the children learning about this fantastic building through the ages. It cost us £20 for a family ticket of 4 which we felt was quiet reasonable. Our 12 year old enjoyed it, but our 5 year old lost interest. It involves a lot of reading the info which our little one got a bit bored of. But we still enjoyed our time there! We also found the staff very friendly :)
S. S.
Visited the Commandery for spooky ghost tour, never been on one before so didn't know what to expect. It was interesting hearing about the history and tragedies. It was atmospheric and the tour guide was ace. Would recommend this tour for most, even if you get spooked easily, like me! 👻
G. W.
Went for the reenactment, have been for the past 4 years, an excellent place and the volunteers are great and friendly. See you there next year
J. T.
Great spot for history, kids experience, cafe does super cakes and the best toasties in town, and try the soup. Canalside gated seating in garden, plenty to watch
C. T.
Very interesting place to go. I would definitely recommend coming here and eating at their tea room.
A. S.
An essential visit for anyone interested in the English civil war. Beautifully preserved, uncluttered, well presented. If you only have time to visit one place in Worcester, this is it.
S. P.
Delightful venue for summer open theatre every July. This year a contemporary version of Pride and Prejudice. Hilarious.
J. D.
Great place to visit and very informative
j. k.
Fabulous museum, brilliant explanation of the building. Great, easy to follow timeline. From medieval monastery through to a 20th century printing works. Fantastic value for money and great experience. Definitely up for returning.
T. G.
This is a fabulous place to visit. It is much bigger than it looks from the outside. Reasonabley priced entrance charge. Very knowledgeable staff.
M. M.
Visited the cafe just after Christmas. It was open and very busy which was a good sign. It was a short wait but worth it for the fabulous coffee and best onion and cheese toastie I have ever had. Thick fresh brown bread, loads of filling, perfect. The service was very friendly and I will definitely make a point of visiting when I am back in the city.
C. M.
Brilliant museum. Very well laid out, lots of accessible information for children. We spent two hours here.
L. L.
Nice place, very interesting and great to have a look round for an hour!
R. M.
Very interesting place. English Civil War history plus use of the buildings over the ages. Superb medieval plaster paintings - most unexpected.
J. B.
More to this place than meets the eye ... well worth a visit .. staff very informative & nothing any bother...Good place to bring the kids
M. M.
What a wonderful cafe. It was busy but expected during the Christmas period. They also did explain there would be a wait. The coffee was tasty fresh and lovely. The cheese and red onion toastie was the best ever. Thick brown poppy seed slices, loads of cheese and onion, absolutely gorgeous. The service was fun and friendly, busy inside and outside but everyone prepared to wait which says it all. Definitely recommend.
K. H.
Back in Worcester a year later and visited again - still fantastic, best coffee and fabulous cakes. And the owners (and their staff) are still smiling, happy and welcoming. 😊
M. L.
Great place! Very informative and bigger than you think once inside!
F. v. M.
Beautifull place to see. Fulltime of historic elementen and stories
k. k.
For those interested in the civil war this is a must see. A beautifully preserved building, uncluttered, which let's you see and imagine the history in all its fascinating nooks and corners. We loved it.
C. F.
Lovely little wonder around lovely park to walk too
A. D.
Great history, beautiful building and gardens. Friendly, helpful staff
J. F.
Good food . Excellent toasties. Coffee of good quality. Nice sitting next to canal . Safe for children as the entrance to tow path is gated.
T. C.
What a gem wonderful cakes and toasties and the amazing hosts Gemma and Peter and their team make it a pleasure to visit this wonderful place even the dogs love it as Gemma has special treats for them. We love and appreciate The Commandery Cafe
R. M.
To history lovers like myself, this place is an absolute paradise. A really interesting look at the civil war, which you are driven to experience in a unique and engaging fashion. The house itself is beautiful and you really feel like you're getting your money's worth from the museum. I am not even a massive fan of civil war history, but still had an incredible time with my partner's grandmother which we both thoroughly enjoyed. The staff were all excellent as well, nothing was too much trouble and they retrieved a small sentimental item which I had lost for me. The café was also extremely pleasant. The only thing I would say is that the talk which was offered was slightly lacklustre but that did not distract greatly from our visit and I cannot recommend this place highly enough!
J. W.
Definitely worth a visit, as the Royalist HQ for the Battle of Worcester. The house still retains its period look and feel. Perhaps could do with a few more artefacts and explanations.
G. H.
Had a lovely visit, my daughter was studying the civil war at school and we came here to help with her project. We purchased our admissions at the gift shop and proceeded to tour the house. There was a guided tour due about half an hour after we arrived so stayed close. Whilst we were waiting a member of staff came over and we got chatting about The Commandery. When it was time for the guided tour we were the only people so we had our own private tour and guide. As we were the only ones our guide said that she would do things a little different to normal. The tour lasted around two hours (not sure if it was supposed to), there was lots of information that I either didn't know about or could remember from my school days regarding the civil war. The tour guide was very informative, very enthusiastic, friendly and able to answer any questions we had. Also told us about the cannon ball and musket ball dents in the boundary wall on City Walls Road which we later went and found. After our tour and visit we entered the gift shop and purchased a few items including a book which was recommended by the guide. We left feeling as though we had learnt something new and that the service we had received was great value for money. Overall great day/afternoon. Will go back again in the not to distant future. 5*.....and my daughter received good marks for her project, so a big thank you to all the staff/volunteers at The Commandery.
L. C.
My boyfriend and I visited this place last fall and we had a lovely time. Great way to learn a bit more about the local history and a nice way to pass the weekend.
C. H.
Great attraction and definitely worth a visit
A. C.
Excellent museum and fascinating building. Has lots of exhibits that anyone can enjoy as well some old board games dotted about the museum for kids and adults alike. The history of the building is directly linked to the outcome of the battle of Worcester (the final battle of the Civil War(a) and would be fascinating to anyone interested in the English Civil War.
N. B.
Great museum, very hands on for kids.
C. B.
Excellent museum with very informative staff. Many nooks and crannies to explore with many local history exhibits and many interactive days with re-inactments, speeches and practical demonstrations the kids realy seem to enjoy.
Lovely gardens to walk around and sit and a great cosy cafe with outside seating next to the canal offering light meals and super homemade cakes.
G. F.
Lots of interesting history plus activities for kids. The cafe is open to anyone you don't have to visit the main exhibition.
P. B.
Excellent museum depicting a very important battle. Museum was interactive with models of battle fields and likes, music etc. I felt very safe with Covid precautions and the staff were pleasant.
J. P.
Spent a fantastic few hours at this incredible museum. We learnt so much about the history of the house and the civil war. Thanks to Jo for imparting her vast knowledge with such enthusiasm. The cherry on the cake.. no pun intended..was our visit to the cafe run by Gemma, great food and coffee. Thoroughly recommended.
S. D.
We went to the cafe at the Commandary. As the sun was shining we sat outside and had hot chocolate and a slice of delicious cake to share. All Covid rules were adhered to and the staff were friendly and efficient.
D. W.
Very informative about the Civil War and about how the building was used throughout its life. Unfortunately the re-enactors were not there when we visited though.
A. W.
Excellent canalside cafe with beautiful garden, inside and outside seating, child and dog friendly. Easy access for wheelchairs and prams. Caters for all dietary needs - vegan, vegetarian, gluten and dairy free. Scrumptious cakes and light meals, etc. Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff led by Gemma the owner who is a delight. Could not recommend this cafe more.
N. C.
Haven't been for a while. They've made some really good changes with good exhibits. Well worth a visit. The cafe is also a great place. Worth going to even if you don't want to visit the Commandery.
D. C.
A lovely historic place, good events, child friendly . A place to revisit!
N. R.
Very confusing museum but the grounds are nice and they run activities and exhibitions there. I went to a wildlife photography exhibition which was outside and that was lovely.
V. S.
More to see than we had realised and we learnt a lot about our local history.
As Worcester residents we now have an annual pass.
D. C.
Wonderful experience , charting some of the most interesting periods in British history. With the focus on how the commandry and Worcester played its part. Went with a 6 and 9 year old and they enjoyed and learned a lot too. The Staff were all very friendly and knowledgeable, with the Civil war talk informative and engaging.
J. I.
Perfect, friendly staff excellent coffee and beautiful cakes. Recommend all to pay a visit if your in the area
A. B.
Expensive for what is on show but a good feel of the past. I recommend the place but I feel they could lower the prices a bit
R. R.
Amazing cookies & Coffee in a lovely setting next to the canal. Good takeaway service whilst not able to sit in during Covid.
G. S. C.
Beautiful living history museum that's earliest records date back to 1294 when the site was the Hospital of St Wulfstan. It latter become more famous as the headquarters of Charles the Second during the battle of Worcester during the English Civil war. It later became a school for blind boys. The museum as a lot for families including many artifacts from its history along with gory tales of death and US presidential connections. A must visit with plenty to see and do. Especially fun to catch are the historical displays in the outside gardens and the plays that take place at certain times of the year.
T. P. (.
Visit to cafe only, the owner is always helpful and the standard of food and drinks is very good. Well worth a visit if your looking around the museum or not. Indoor seating and outdoor looking onto the canal.
G. B.
The Commandery is a great museum. It has recently been reinvented as an English Civil War Museum as it was the Royalist headquarters during the battle of Worcester. But there are other attractions within in the building such as the painted chamber with religious paintings from the 15th century. Don't forget to look at the ceiling. Well worth a visit.
A. X.
The cafe, stopped for a toasty whilst passing through on a narrowboat, wonderful attention to detail with the food with dressing on the salad leaves, a perfect coffee served by charming and friendly staff. Truly a canal side oasis.
C. B.
Fascinating place, examining a period of history not often featured. Presented in an interesting way, in the actual buildings where it took place.
Well worth a visit.
O. H.

After dark Halloween night very good could do with smaller groups and less conversation so we can tune in to the activity.
T. M.
A bit more about the English Civil War in general might have added to the experience and the video at the beginning was a tad lame. If you're a fan of the period though then you need to visit.
S. F.
Great place to spend a couple of hours, good value, some days are free entry for all, good to combine with a walk along the river and visiting the city center.
