Reviews of The Hope & Ruin
P. M.
Loved this place! Fab quirky decor, food was great, staff were friendly and service was fast. So many vegan aces to try in Brighton but definitely recommend this one, well worth a visit. Reasonably priced too 😍
G. P.
Fantastic venue with great sound. The head sound tech, Leon, is brilliant and knows the space inside out: the sound is a real treat, whether you're a performer or in the audience. It's a real pleasure to go and watch amazing bands in a compact venue where you can truly feel immersed in the gig. Also: great vegan food and beers downstairs, and the staff throughout are always excellent.
S. W.
Cosy pub, nice vegan bar food. The best is the music club upstairs. Good, intimate athmosphere. A very nice local band played when we visited, The Dials. Superb sound!
S. P.
Quirky pub with fabulous decor. The food was great, we had a vegan kebab, it was really tasty and filling. The beer and cider were lovely and the guys behind the bar were super friendly. Would definitely come again next time we're in town
l. n.
Great small venue above the pub, nice atmosphere, great sound
C. S.
Brilliant venue for live music, intimate but a great sound system too. Drinks are fairly priced and staff are super friendly! Will definitely be visiting again ⭐
A. R.
Great friendly pub, with cracking range of ales and ciders. Upstairs also has an excellent venue for intimate gig's. I saw GBOA there splendid gig. Also the blokes on the door friendly and chatty. Top night out 👌
T. P.
Lively pub with a good atmosphere. Not sampled the food, but the menu sounds good!
Eclectic surroundings on the walls and interior decor make this bar stand out from the crowd.
And it can be a laugh reading some of the wall graffiti and comments in the toilets!
R. J.
Awesome little space with colours everywhere. I wish covid wasnt around because live music here would be sick.
Good quick service with an app, much like spoons.
c. k.
Great place for a gig. Vegan menu is really good. Proper background music 🎶
A.
Great service, friendly atmosphere. And anywhere that serves Rosie's Pig will always be recommended by me. Looking forward to seeing gigs there again.
S. H.
Haven’t been for a few years and loved the expanded gig area upstairs. Brilliant space for gigs with a wide stage one end, an easily accessible bar the other, and an intimate yet surprisingly roomy area for taking it all in and throwing in a few dance moves if so taken by the rhythms. Love it!
T. t. F. P.
Lovely venue (and bar-food-place-thing)!! Went there to see GIRLI & July Jones. Downstairs you get a nice vibey bar with 100% vegan food (Brighton prices - pretty reasonable for them, actually) and cool decor, upstairs you have the "venue"/stage which is nice n atmospheric, small enough to be intimate but large enough to fit a decent crowd :) Super nice lil venue for shows or drinks & food
'N shoutout to the amazing Pandora, best venue rep out there! ✌️✌️ Love u! ❤️
R. J.
Such a relief to visit a pub and not have to ask what beers are vegetarian! The only criticism of the beer selection is that it seemed exclusively IPAs, with no darker bitters.
Music was not too intrusive and fitted well with the eclectic ambiance of the pub.
s. m. m.
Busy, vibrant venue. Great for live music. More bar staff (upstairs) might have meant they kept on top of things like hand towels and toilet rolls in the loo, and the gas ran out on the fizzy drinks. Otherwise good.
C. D.
Ana absolute must if you are visiting Brighton or are vegan.
First of the selection of craft and local tipple is great. Fast service and a great atmosphere.
Vegans (and even meat eaters!) will love the loaded fries and "wursts" available here. Honestly, they're delicious.
It's also a good place to see live music and have a good dance at the weekend.
F. T. D.
I went last night to watch Hutch, what an Absolutely amazing band! I hope they get booked here again.
C. M.
Recently saw Gaye Bikers On Acid play. It's a great venue, can't recommend the place enough. If I was writing for the NME, Smash Hits or Readers Wives I'd pepper this with words like 'intimate', 'friendly', 'covid vector party' and 'sticky carpets'. GBOA played an excellent set, surprised to see who looked like the Wookie of the Lewes Road B&Q playing lead guitar, he's a talented musician, a lot better than his knowledge of garden hose universal tap connectors (if it was him). The house was 'a shaking and a grooving' despite the average age being 50+.That would be down to the excellent sound system, sanatogen, support hosiery and the vapid delusional belief that the pandemic was finally over and we could go coughing and wheezing into the night tripping the light fantastic.
T. M.
I come here for vegan junk food on offer as I absolutely love it! I also love the bar and the quirky way it’s decorated, last time with friends for Halloween we came here for food and had a few too many tequilas and ended up having such a good night because of the atmosphere. It was great! Highly recommend coming here with friends but be warned, get here early as it gets busy during the night.
J. H. T.
It's a cool, hip pub. I really like the style.
I was here for a gig and I have to say the sound system is amazing. The band were clear and crisp through the speakers and the sound level was spot on.
The room was a little cold to begin with but quickly warmed up.
J. D.
Have enjoyed the menu (a lot) here a couple of times visiting from Dublin. Have yet to enjoy the live music but the venue is very cool and the staff are friendly.
B. 8.
Freaking amazing little bar.
Grunge vibes and an amazing menu full of vegan hot dogs and loaded fries. A big range of craft beers and also this pub is close to the station and an easy walk from Brighton beach.
Definitely a must-visit place in Brighton. Heil seitan! 🤘
G. G.
Brilliant live acts. Try and catch the Brighton duo SONS #sonsbanduk if you can. Great food and really decent bar. Well worth a visit to see the quirky decor.
G. T.
What a fantastic concept..... Vegan comfort food (don't say junk) . Hot dogs, kebabs loaded fries, chicken less chicken popcorn....but does a vegan food concept deliver good hangover food? It certainly does and we are complete converts. We had the chili dog with cheese, the meatball marinara dog and peanut butter and chilli jam loaded fries. Came in at £20 and we ate every last chip and went away stuffed enough to feel sleepy and content. Who needs meat anyways?
S. G.
Lovely traditional pub, very clean, lovely chap running it, very welcoming, and dogs welcome, wide range of Ales, warm and cosy, music venue upstairs also.
m. w.
Such a nice pub. The staff were really welcoming and helpful. They managed covid situation really well, such as table service and cleanliness. The beer choice was great. The food was THE BEST and I'm not even vegan!
All this awesomeness and I haven't even mentioned you can catch some of your favourite bands here aswell. Thanks Hope & Ruin it's was so good to get out and about in the land of gigs.
j. d.
Great place to see live music, never a duff night here.
M. W.
Another superb spot in Brighton for Vegans to try. All the food is Vegan but not all the drinks, so choose wisely, or just ask. The staff were very friendly and the mix of people was great. Live music played regularly. You will not believe the menu, give it a try.
J. F.
quirky decor, great atmosphere and good vegetarian food by Bezelbub.. Plus it has a nice gig space above... What more do you want??! 😁
C. S.
Vegan heaven in a funky Brighton bar. All cruelty free menu (love their hot dogs!) Amazing decor which will having your head swivelling to take it all in. Popular with Brighton's young bohemian student crowd. Can get packed, so plan ahead if you want to visit on a Friday or Saturday night, otherwise you're in for a long wait.
R. W.
Great venue to see bands and good beer
C. M.
Really cool place ,great vegan food.
J. W.
Had a good night some local bands ,live music always goes down well worth a visit even if you don't know what to do for the evening you'll find something there to make the evening worth while
C. M.
Really lovely place! The food was really tasty and vegan/vegetarian. The staff were very friendly and service was very quick. The decor is very quirky and cool. It's very near the train station too so it's definitely worth checking out on your way in or out of the city.
X. C.
Had a great time covering Freyer Beers this evening, images to follow, amazing sound in there too!
N. G.
Awesome place! Amazing food and generous portions. The loaded fries are a must try and the poppers. I had the kimchi loaded fries and my friends had the cheesy ones. Lovely place!
Y. H.
Quirky. Alternative. Open till late.
Vibrant. Loud(er than most typical bars, great for hanging out with friends - maybe less for a romantic date or a business meeting...). Live music venue upstairs.
R. T.
Good selection of alcohol and even had alcohol free beer. Good music and atmosphere. I highly recommend.
C. R.
Nice pub , good music and beer.
P. j.
Great place, really friendly, awesome mix of music and people, not had fun like that for ages
S. M.
One of my favourite places to go for a night out in Brighton!
P. B. B.
Amazing Vegan Food!!! Really nice staff and a cosy atmosphere.
S. R. J.
Really cool little bar and the staff were friendly
M. C.
Can't fault this place! Staff were friendly and helpful. Vast selection of drinks and the food (although a little spicy) was amazing!
L. I.
Really good vegan fast food in a quirky bar with great music and friendly staff. Offering quality vegan junk food (my number 1 is their delicious vegan chilli, chips n' vegan cheese 😋🤤😋🤤). Loads of vegan options available though and all their booze is vegan too. Great atmosphere for chats downstairs, with bands upstairs. One of my fave hangouts 😍 Oh, and ask Luke the chef if you want the chilli extra hot 🔥🥵
L.
Excellent grubby vegan food and brews downstairs and a punky venue space upstairs with its own bar.
E. H.
Lovely pub and awesome vegan food too
M. A.
Beatfull músic beer peaple good
G. W.
It's OK. The food is nice (if vegan junk food is what you're looking for), but the place could do with a clean. Staff all very friendly and helpful.
G. C.
Excellent live venue upstairs - great sound. Didn't eat downstairs but the vegan food looked so good that I will be back today for some. Oddly wonderful decor, amicable clientele, and good vibe about the place. Staff sound but a bit on the slow side behind the bar. Drink not cheap.
T. B.
Brilliant Brighton venue. Quirky decor. Relaxed atmosphere. Amazing selection of drinks. 100% vegan so no need to worry about anything you order. Dog friendly. Great gig space too. My favourite place to go in town.
Y. M.
A vegan heaven! The food is amazing, the prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is chilled. We had the vegan kebabs and some loaded chips and deep fried olives. It was all super tasty and even my non-vegan partner enjoyed it. Would definitely recommend and will go back there for sure every time I visit Brighton.
H. G.
An iconic music venue in the city and usually a great place to party. They've introduced great measures since reopening and are still a unique and cool place to hang out with great craft beer, music and vegan junk food.
A. B.
Great staff. Relaxed atmosphere with good tunes in the background and food eat whilst hailing Satan. Perfect
J. B.
We went here purely for the vegan dogs and they were outstanding. Really loved them. This place epitomises Brighton where anything goes. One guy in here had his 2 chihuahuas dressed up... It's Funky, a bit punky, interesting staff, super friendly. Love it here if you want to experience Brighton culture this is it in a nutshell.
H. Y.
Friendly service, relaxed atmosphere and good selection of drinks. Perfect for the station wait or in the way to the beach. Have your mobile ready to order drinks 😀
C. C.
Loved the experience. The gig was excellent and the venue awesome.
S.
This is quite a charming place. The decor is really nice and representative of the name - ‘hope & ruin’. We visited on a Sunday and got to listen to this amazing rock band, they were really good. The bartenders are also nice - the lady bartender gave me shots of the different ciders they had (to try) as I was not very familiar with the names. Will definitely visit when next I’m in the area
J. M.
Lovely all vegan pub (both food and drinks as of 24/10/18).
Very eclectic style with some bizarre decorations.
Food is nice, junk food type.
Prices are good.
Toilets aren't very nice unfortunately.
You can't book in advance as this place is frequently very busy.
N. W.
Absolutely fantastic pub and music venue. The bar/pub bit is full of character and has an excellent selection of mostly keg ales, they also do vegan food. The music venue itself is a really great, decent sized stage, good sound system and unrestricted views from pretty much wherever you stand, unless you're unfortunate enough to stand behind me.
M. A.
Good music. Reasonable priced. Gutted I didn't get to try the vegan kebab or hotdogs :(
A. W.
Great fun, good evening late night drinks
T. A.
A pub like this, is a pub like me.
Tasty, boozy and ready 2 rock.
B. V.
Great Pub, friendly staff, WE had a lot of fun. 😀
M. L.
Nice place with a good atmosphere and crazy decorations, great program and cheap drinks. High spot of Brighton.
M. T.
Really cool, trendy pub with a vegan kitchen and lots of random stuff hanging from the walls and ceiling.
P. S.
I'm by no means vegan but I could eat here every day and never miss meat and dairy. The food is phenomenal!
j. b.
Great gigs. Been here loads for gigs upstairs. One of the best small to mid sized venues in Brighton. Small and bigger bands play here. The bar is good. A little bit pretentious decorating wise but the drinks are good. And there is a great choice of vegan food from the kitchen. I deffo recommend this place.
H. J.
Such a great pub! So many beers to choose from and the nicest staff. The vegan food in unbelievable so go and grab yourself a hot dog for sure. There are dope gigs upstairs and DJs downstairs a lot of the time so you won't get bored, and the decor is super quirky.
T. B.
Great live music venue, good selection of drinks. However not much gluten free food available, although friends raved about the vegan options. I would go for the music again, but eat somewhere else first...
d.
quirky little place, great selection of real ales and friendly staff
A. I.
One of the best bars in Brighton for sure. Great atmosphere and a really nice interior. Standard Brighton drink prices so not the cheapest but normal for the area. The food is really really good with tons of great vegan options which taste amazing. 100% recommend
T. A.
I've been meaning to go in here for AGES but somehow always manage to miss it. Made it in yesterday at long last and it's exactly what we hoped it would be. Really interesting vegan junk food and a great selection of beers. Pleasant staff and good atmosphere. A quirky place that might not be to everyone's taste but you should really give it a try if only for the 'chicken' poppers and a swift half.
R. Š.
Such a cool place. Vegan dishes, highlight was fooled pork fries. The decor is amazing and so random. Would go again to experience the quirkiness. We had some beer and the fries and you just end up looking around at all the weird stuff. A good stop on the way to or from the station to the seaside.
L. W.
This is my favourite pub in Brighton. They have awesome beers on tap but the thing that brings me back are the hot dogs. I have no idea how the make such top tier hotdogs that are vegan. Also the currywurst is easily as good as those I've had in Berlin!
R. B.
The weirdest and most wonderful bar I've ever been to. The staff are delightful and the food is incredible. The kitchen is all vegan so hot dogs, cheese, brownies and ice cream is all vegan and it's delicious! The price isn't that bad also:)
V. B.
Best vegan hot dogs and brownies you'll ever have. A regular spot for me to visit when I am down in Brighton. Also, awesome decor and they always hold great gigs here too!
T. d.
Quirky fun place, good food and great beer. Good service with friendly helpful staff. Would recommend to anyone.
S. J. H.
Great (if slightly pretentiously decorated) ALL VEGAN pub and venue. Seen great bands here, drunk great beer and...being home to the almighty BEELZEBAB eaten some of the best Vegan Junk food ever! Highly recommended.
M. B.
Kinda grebby but endearing, plus everything is vegan!
g. P.
Awesome Vegan food, great atmosphere, will come again!
O. H.
It's really cool to see vegan food moving beyond matching meat, into exploring new flavor combos. The jackfruit BBQ fries are amazing. Omg. Great beer on tap and a genuine team behind the bar. Really good place to chill.
A. B.
What a fantastic treat! A whole evening of incredible music, 2 bands downstairs and then 2 more upstairs. Pure girl punk energy downstairs (Well, mainly ladies!) and an amazing contrast upstairs, where we were first treated to a Chilean band and then one from Japan, who were all incredible players. Both bands played really mesmerising music and I was blown away by both drummers. It was an evening that I would be happy to relive again and again!
M. S.
I come to this place regularly. They have great gigs and their vegan food is excellent. They sell really good seitan related merchandise. The kitchen is in a converted caravan inside the bar and the downstairs is equipped with really eclectic decoration; including a washing machine. The bar staff look like they make Vice documentaries. Great if you are meeting you friends from London from the train and you want to remind them that good things exist outside of Dalston.
A. H.
Positives: The pub has a good atmosphere and interesting decor. The vegan food was tasty and affordable.
Negatives: I ordered an Aperol Spritz (which they advertise on a sign at the bar, so I assumed they would know how to make it properly) which was completely flat and lacking in flavour. I took it back to one of the bartenders to politely inform them of the above. Instead of checking the drink and/or making a new one he simply topped it up with more soda water from the mixer tap which diluted it further - at this point it was completely tasteless, so we ended up leaving most of it. What a waste of money. Not the best way to encourage return customers...
N. H.
Fantastic little intimate venue for upcoming bands to visit whilst on tour
Great people running the place too
D. S.
Love the Dad Rock party nights. The food is fine as snacks with booze but I wouldn't really want to go out for a meal here. The atmosphere is pretty unique - it shares several aesthetic qualities with the overflowing contents of a bin lorry - but I'm not certain whether to consider this a positive or negative element. The beer selection is OK and not too expensive. A friend did have an incident where he thought a beer was off (unless it was supposed to be egg-beer) and, though they argued that it was fine, they politely replaced it with a different one.
D. m.
Most interestingly decorated pub I've ever been to, certainly a good atmosphere with different music every time I go in. The prices seem average for a Brighton pub.
The choice is good on lager/cider but there were no bitters on. Plenty of choice if you like an IPA though!
Overall: a good, quirky pub that's always worth a visit.
a. s.
Bars ok but gent toilets was full of flys
J. S.
Drinkin Heineken bear ✌😉🍀
K. D.
Another fantastic pub! The staff are really friendly and the food is SO GOOD. Great beer selection too. The space is open and welcoming. They also have some great gigs upstairs. The Pacman table is a bonus.
N. B.
Potentially my favourite pub in brighton secondary to the combination of the atmosphere and the absoloutely delicious vegan food. They had a great selection of beer- a really different variety of craft ales. The decor is cozy, the people were friendly staff and customers alike, and my meat eating friend couldn't get over how awesome the food was
E. T.
loved the music, interior, the variety of beers and of course the crazy hot dogs with awesome fries. the fries with cheese and sauce were to die for (forgot the name). It's so amazing that this is an all vegan pub, it's like a dream come true for a vegan like me.
A.
Hands down my favourite food/drink place to go in Brighton. Great food, great beers, great value, the staff are great, decor is great. It's just GREAT.
M. H.
Good venue and a favorite in Brighton featuring a bar downstairs and live venue upstairs. The have an excellent pa and something happening on a daily basis. Good place to listen to up and coming bands like Alex Tracey. If you are ever in Brighton give it a visit.
D. M.
Saw the Pins. Brilliant! Great venue. Lots of character, nice beer.
T. M.
Spacious and quirky - love it! Super friendly staff and really great vegan hotdogs. There's a music venue upstairs also which could do without the random pillar right in front of the stage, but otherwise I saw Octopuses there a while back and it was awesome. Always packed to the brim Friday and Saturday nights, but totally worth dropping in if you can.
K. P.
It's an ok restaurant. I kinda just wanted some classic food for lunch and most thinfs on tbe menu feel like they're trying to prove how much kooky vegan food they can make. Maybe it just wasn't my cup of tea, but the staff were kind and the food served promptly
P. K.
Nice place to relax and have a drink. Didn't try food but it looked nice
R. P.
Pretty cool place. Alternative crowd and music. Upstairs they have a podium where they regularly have local bands play alternative and heavy music. There is a bit of a devil theme with 666 and 420 (number that symbolises Marijuana) popping up everywhere so if you are offended by that this will not be your place. If you love alternative and heavy music you should check it out. They serve proper bar food as well.
M. W.
Awesome place. Well worth a visit in in Brighton
O. H.
Good atmosphere, great bands. Just taking one start off for poor acoustics (just hang some cloths from the ceiling guys) and occasional slow motion bar staff upstairs.
Edit: Oh well, must be just me then.
Updated to 5 stars because frankly without places like this the world world be a poorer place. Please keep on keeping on.
C. R.
Always the best pub in the world where you can drink beer in a bath.
K. K.
The best hot dogs in town, but mostly I love their poppers, OMG thay are to die for. And all food is ... vegan!!!!! My friend who eats meat she loves this place. So go and enjoy dirty chips with dirty hot dogs and some poppers on a side. I guarantee you will love it!
L. V.
Best vegan junk food I've ever had. Proof you can be vegan and fat 👌🏻
J. F.
An excellent bar, I really enjoyed the atmosphere. A good selection of beers, one of which were vegan, and other drinks. Music was good, a number of classic hits were played. I was recommended the place and I would happily recommended it to others.
M. K.
Went here for the Beelzebab seitan vegan Doner Kebab & Chillie Cheese Fries, it was quite simply astounding, a game changer it really was delicious & so filling, not the cheapest but it is on the main drag to the Brighton seafront so no shock there.
Also the decor is a mix of punk rock mixed with art school squat in the nineties. Very cool & different.
Go for the food, stay for the atmosphere.
R. C.
Proper hipster and I love it 😂
Excellent vegan fast food, good range of drinks. They put on great quiz nights and the drawing club was lots of fun. I’m kinda addicted to this pub 🤘🏽
T. E.
Good quirky bar with a lively atmosphere.
N.
Great place for music and vegan food, a must visit if you're exploring Brighton
L. M.
Absolutely brilliant place for some rockin' pirate bands! Totally love it, upstairs venue is compact and buzzing and the staff all really friendly. Good mix of craft ales and beers too.
T. M.
Fantastic in the day to get lunch, Setian hotdogs and chilis that are really convincing. As a music venue it's also very good, the function room is the perfect size for an intimate but vibrant gig. The place also has nice selection of beers.
M. S.
Very differenttly looking place. Beer choice could be better, but it's not bad either. Some local ones. Kronenbourg... Nice staff and absolutely awesome vegan food. Couldn't believe the kebab is meat free. Good music on (not just) weekends too. Can get rather crowded.
K. M.
Lively bar with a buzzing atmosphere, very close to the station. Great for vegan food and hanging out in groups. There's a cosy live music venue upstairs with a separate bar.
K. E.
Good pub, very interesting decor!
Good range of beers, the food looks nice (I didn't have any but what I saw looked good.)
The venue upstairs was good. Decent stage and a good size bar.
K. M.
I was alone with a crying baby and the bartender (whose name I have forgotten but she was a lovely northern lady) helped with my seat and offered me a pint of water whilst I breastfed. It seems like a small gesture but it meant the world to me. Once my partner arrived we had some delicious food and as implied above, the service was amazing. Thank you kind lady who really made my Christmas Eve!
c. a.
Pub with great vegan fast food. Hot dogs are goood! Usually has good vibe/tunes and has a nice small venue downstairs.
S. M.
Aesthetically pleasing, funky bar. Has a wide selection of craft drinks. They do charge more than I expected. Had a great time though playing on the arcade table by the bar.
J. A.
My favourite bar in Brighton. I love the vibe and decor and the food has always been good. It can get quite cramped on Friday and Saturday nights, so get there early if you want a table for you and your chums.
D. S.
One of my favourite pubs.... plus the food they offer is amazing 😍 would rather if they didn't put the raisins in the brownie though
L. H.
Amazing vegan doner kebabs. Good vibe and always busy. The on-tap beers looked amazing but I can't believe that in the whole place there was not one non-alcoholic beer. Not even a dusty old Becks Blue in the back of a fridge somewhere. Do yourselves a favour and stock Jever Fun or Schneiderweiss or Estrella Damm 0 or something, go on.
D. W.
Perfect ending to a boss visit to Brighton... Had the most amazing 'Big Ben' - hotdog on a donner kebab but all vegan! So delicious.. and the sea salt cider to wash it down was spot on. Quality service and a lovely place to go on your own or with a group.
R. T.
Great beer, great atmosphere. Love the culinary caravan (you've got to see it to understand it). And there's great music upstairs. What's not to love?
M. R.
Loved it! Really enjoyed this evening at The Hope & Ruin. Never been there before. Would definitely recommend. Next time, I think I'll try one of their hotdogs!!! :-)
S. M.
Currently sat on a train out from Brighton having devoured a hot dog from this place. I'm a dedicated meat eater normally but I've gotta say that's one of the best hotdogs I've ever had 😍 finally dound food I can share with my veggie lady.
Definitely a return visit in the works
D. B.
This is the place to take your first date. In a few days time it will be my anniversary with my girlfriend and this place made all that happen exactly one year ago.
Very eccentric, good ales and drinks and upstairs gigs. Wonderful venue. Friendly staff.
Thank you again! See you very soon!
p. f.
Really friendly. Great vibes
J. S.
Cool but it is a ruin bar :) good beer!
S. C.
Alternative, tasty, vegan food. Staff are always pleasant and attentive. For someone with allergies this place is perfect. Range of food availible is very limited though.
E.
Visited as part of the Great Escape New Music Festival. The gigs were in the downstairs and upstairs bars. The downstairs bar has some quirky retro/vintage decor lights and electronics.
J. D.
Great selection of drinks and vegan food served by friendly staff, all wrapped up in a uniquely decorated space. The venue upstairs is a perfect space for seeing the bands that play there.
S.
Favourite place to chill. The food is great and everyone in here is really nice. Come here to work, come here to relax. Make sure you come at least once a month for the dog of the month (especially if they do tacos again!)
N.
Visited with a friend over bank holiday weekend and was surprised to find it wasn't too busy. We got a drink and ordered some food, which arrived quickly. Staff were friendly enough.
Experience was only slight marred by a louuuud hen do crowd that arrived shortly after we did, but not much can be done about that!
S. R.
Really cool decor and atmosphere, great selection of drinks, nice staff, amazing gigs and soundtrack. Only had one bit of food (chilli chips), they were good value for money and a real tasty sloppy mess - in a good way!
What a shame it doesn’t have an outdoor area!
B. W.
Vegan food offerings which are better than one might expect despite the inherent limitation ... but still not as good as the real deal. A good selection of brews at average prices, and wine-on-tap by the jug provide the liquid courage (or patience) required. Limited seating, eclectic decor and hipster popularity make for a quitessential scenester experience, if that's what you're into, and the gig-venue aspect centers the Hope & Ruin as a Brighton staple. Not everyone's cup of tea, but it's perfect for the clientele who recognise themselves in the establishment's image.
T. P.
The beer is good and the vibes are right. Phenomenal music, great people and to top it off the decor in this bar place is pleasantly unique. Next time I'm in town it will be the first place I get a pint.
J. S.
We went there for Sam amidon's gig, had some food before the gig start. They serve all vegetarian food like vegetarian hotdog and loaded fries. The food are nice and filling.
The show takes place upstair where they have a medium sized room. There aren't any ventilation upstair and it gets really hot and sultry. I felt a bit ill and I had to get out of the room for a bit.
M. V. d. P.
Great beers, people's and honestly despite all the fancy vegan fast food joints popping up, this place is still the best.
A. H.
A proper rock and roll venue, vegan fast food served in the bar, (good selection of cask and craft beers) on street level, live music venue upstairs, which features the sort of bands that are not likely to pop up on x factor (thank goodness)
N.
Quirky, fun, whacky and cooky... Everything you need in a Brighton bar! Packed with fairy lights, cool decor and odd touches such as bath tub seating, a caravan kitchen and a piano falling down the stairs! If you like to drink in a unique atmosphere and love an edgy watering hole then this one's for you.
N. K.
Pretty cool place with great vegan junk food, not gonna lie think it’s a bit pricy for portion size. And I would have been more comfortable had the windows been closed on the blustery day we visited.
R. G.
The place is very particular, plenty of old-fashion fornitures and odd ; a bit smelly like all the english pubs. Service staff nice but not so friendly. Anyway, I can recommend to alla vegans & vegetarians because of their menu is just for Veggy ;)
S. B.
The best atmosphere, really chilled, cool bar staff. THE BEST VEGAN HOT DOGS EVER!! Honestly, they taste even better than real meat. Try them, they are amazing!!
J. T.
Nice pub. Good selection of beers and had a blast playing pacman on the vintage arcade tables. Really chilled out atmosphere, very welcoming.
A. B.
Absolutely loved this place!! Great music and great attitude 👍
I. N.
Very interesting interior. Choise of beers, ales, etc. is not wide.
A. B.
Really fun brighton hipster style bar with great little clubs and events which make the place extra interesting. Delicous Vegan junk food is also a plus!
R. W.
Efficient table service via online ordering with eclectic deco.
M. L.
Excellent music venue and an enjoyable night.
M. G.
Simply mind-boggling vegan food. 😍
A. F.
One of the reasons I moved to Brighton. Just on the right side of hipster and Beelzebab is the best vegan junk food in town. Good space upstairs for gigs too.
R. O.
Always a great place to stop for a drink. Potentially the most hipster place in the world but they have good beer, full vegan menu and good music.
A. T.
Here for the first time to see Indoor Swimming first gig. They did so well! Well done guys! Great venue, amazing atmosphere
A. J.
Eccentric indy pub with their own beer. Feels a bit like a themed school disco vibe. Vegan food and generous chilli cheese fries
H. B.
This place is the best! The vegan junk food is the bomb and the pub has a really cool but friendly atmosphere. I love coming here
T. A.
Very odd looking pub, that you either love or hate, but the staff are always great and Beelzebub inside is insanely tasty.
Vegan junk food that tastes better than you would believe.
M. W.
Decent range of beers, nice atmosphere, friendly staff
M. A.
A fantastic venue for seeing bands and a great place to sit have a drink and watch the world go by. Friendly staff and lots of things to keep you occupied if you're on your own.
K. J.
Lovely place. It's great for gigs. I lost a ring here dancing. Can't wait to go back for another drink or a gig.
S. S.
One of my most favorite places in UK. Great food, friendly staff, interesting clientele. Each time I'm traveling thru or staying in Brighton I'm paying a visit.
C. C.
One of my favourite bars, venues and places to eat rolled into one. Where else can you get a decent beer and a vegan kebab and then head upstairs for a gig?
A. D.
Dark, graffiti covered, noisy pub with live music, vegetarian hot dogs, amazing chips and awesome ales. Seriously, it's a great place for a relaxed pint or 4.
E. S.
Cool and quirky pub! One of my favourite places to eat vegan food.
D. A. R. C.
Cool place with lots of character. Sells their own beer which is quite good. Spacious and has a rock vibe in it. Service was excellent. 👌
S. M.
Amazing food! A great place, with friendly staff and a warm, welcoming vibe. Will definitely visit again.
G. B.
Vegan food was fantastic, drinks were excellent, atmosphere was vibrant. Thoroughly enjoyed my time here.
C. M.
What a funky place!!! It's amazing. Way different from any other bar you could find in the area plus the variety of beers is great!
N. C.
Amazing decor inside and even better food to compliment it! Would highly recommend this place if you're in brighton and love Fries or Hot Dogs!
N. W.
Relaxed atmosphere with decent vegan menu
A. J.
Good beer selection. Great vegan pop up kitchen of seitan fast food and hosts many great bands upstairs.
J. W.
Cheap drinks, good atmosphere and quirky decor.
J. M.
Great pub, interesting decor and good beer selection. Vegan food is cheap and cheerful.
N. T.
Great selection of vegan beers (just ask) and the food by Beelzebub is the best good-bad vegan fare (love the hot dogs, loaded fries and ice cream).
A. B.
The sort of pub I lived in when I was a student. However, vegan meat and chips with a pint will mean I go back every so often. Just to remember!
G. C.
Great vegan junk food and they have an upstairs where different bands regularly play. If you haven't already I would definitely pay them a visit.
A. D.
My Brighton's fav!! Funky interior, great music and a live venue upstairs! For those who are vegan, there is also a surprise!
C. K.
One of my favourite pubs and venues in Brighton. Wonderful vegan food too!
k. H.
Gorgeous vegan junk food, great social distancing measures and very nice ales, will come back!
D. W.
I visited recently, first time in while. Each to their own I guess, but the decor is just way too quirky for me. Food is quite tasty for veggie.
L. S. (.
Love music. Love The Hope and Ruin. Marvellous.
L. P.
Great venue for seeing live music. Good selection of craft beers, proper mash up of furniture for decor and friendly staff.
S. E.
Vegan beer and food. What's not to like!
C. B.
Great events, reasonably priced, great selection of drinks, excellent food (pengest poppers and thousand island chips are my go-to!) - all-round top class.
M. B.
Amazing vegan junk food, loaded fries, vegan chicken poppers, hot dogs, kebabs etc. Fries-a-go-go and poppers were so good.
M. M. E.
The best vegan hot dogs and kebabs. I've eaten these in New York, San Francisco, at festivals, at Ikea!! But these are the absolute best!
E. C.
Absolutely amazing food, 100%vegan and full or flavour, new favourite food spot in Brighton!
S. B.
Great place to hang out. All food is vegan as well, and we had their chili cheese fries which was great pub food.
N. M.
Very quirky pub 🤪
S. H.
Lovely selection of beers and great vegan junk food. Definitely worth a visit.
D. D.
This place has such fun decor. The bartenders are very friendly too. The bathroom stalls have good reading material as well.
N.
Nice chilled place, nice vegan kebab and nice smelly garlicky tzatziki. Sometimes live music from upstairs gets pretty loud.
W. D.
The pub is awesome, the live show too. Probably the best place I've ever been in my life
M. F.

D. S.
Great vegetarian food and drinks! Hot and yummy! Some curious eclectic music!
B. D.
All the food was good but the Katsu currywurst and the poppers were outrageously tasty, portion sizes are massive too 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
A. S.
Amazing venue, rétro and unique.
The food was just below average, extremely greasy and unhealthy.
S. D.
Great venue, really enjoyed Ohtis. Only problem was music from downstairs, but didn't spoil a fine night of music.

Really nice bar, even nicer staff. Live music venue is about as perfect as a small venue gets.
L. O.
Quirky place with good beer and vegan grub. Small live venue on the second floor.
S. Z.
A hipster dive. Everyone here works in media and runs a blog. The alcohol selection is great. I don't mean any of this as a put down it's just that kind of place.
J.
A great place to share with a meet up with old friends. Friendly helpful staff lots of useful knowledge on drinks and local attractions
K. C.
Pretty expensive but it's an alright place. Nothing that really stands out to demand the price for the drinks compared to other places nearby.
J. G.
The vegan food here is AMAZING! I plan to visit Brighton again just so I have an excuse to return to the Hope & Ruin
N. I.
