Reviews of The Queen's Hall
C. A.
Great flexible venue, great atmosphere in what is an old converted church. .
The set up with "Cabaret" tables was great for watching China Crisis.
This is easily converted to standing in the stalls if needed.
M. B.
This is such a lovely venue, which doesn't feel busy, even when full, and the sound quality is always really good. Bar can be busy, but well organised and well-staffed
W. R.
Beautiful little building I thought was a church but it's a music hall since 1979. Nice and different for photo opp but I didn't go inside. Looking to connect to different areas you'd find loads of bus options .
L. H.
What a lovely venue, the staff were all really friendly and helpful. We were also very impressed with how they sat everyone for the gig in keeping with Covid-19 restrictions. The bar was very well stocked and really well run. Great night all round for our first gig in over two years!!
A. o. A. D.
Not the best view. But the best venue. Love this place and always great to hear music here.
b. “. b. p.
Great old venue for all types of music . Good veiw of stage from all areas. Nice big bar area.
D. F.
Wonderful venue, a perfect size for live music and comedy. Very friendly staff too, want to see more shows here.
A. M.
Oh dear row Z I thought when I got the tickets, turned out Z meant a cabaret table 20 feet away from Peter Hammill hooray!
D. C.
First time at this venue. Friendly staff, good facilities. Seating is good, nice relaxed hall, not too big or crowded but perfect for medium sized and more intimate atmosphere. Would definitely go again.
C. C.
First time back since Covid, went to see Milton Jones with my 2 Year old Tickets!.
The major change is with toilets, the downstairs facility's have been removed and relocated upstairs with a one way system.
This leaves a big open space rather than the narrow corridor that used to exist.
Unfortunately they still serve disgusting craft beer on tap, and don't have any alternatives in the fridges.
The water jugs and cups are gone , however you can still buy bottles at the bar.
The seating in the main hall appeared to more spaced out, which made the night more relaxing and enjoyable.

Went to see Cara Dillon at the Queens Hall and it was the first time I've been to this venue. I loved it. Great acoustics, great bar and a lovely friendly atmosphere 🎶
I. C.
Great venue but why take away the cloakroom? Thanks for reply but would still say that if it's a gig, and especially if they're standing, most folk don't want the bother of their jackets and bags.
B. L.
Nice venue but don't think the unisex toilets are a good idea. Queues at the interval were massive. Blokes don't need a cubicle but Ladies do. By the end of the gig a lot of cubicles were swimming. Maybe an idea to put ladies to the left and blokes to the right meantime.
C. H.
One of my fav venues for live music.
It has fab acoustics & beautiful architectural charm, the bar is well stocked with tempting delights and the staff are always helpful & friendly.
V. A.
My favourite venue in Edinburgh. Smallish house, good acoustics, and a balcony. Flexible stage. It's unique.
I. B.
Yes I had a great night first time there I did not know there was a bar it was a fine surprise had a great night Robert Crey was fantastic .
M. M.
A brilliant venue for live bands. Small enough to be really intimate but large enough to move around and not feel cramped.
M. A.
Classic venue. Great acoustics, very friendly and helpful staff, great bar service.
C. M.
Had a great night listening to the wonderful performance of Jimmy Webb, with guests Ashley Cambell and Thor Jenson.
R. S.
The Queen's Hall Edinburgh, is a great venue for smaller concerts.
It's a lovely auld building in the Southside of the city, that been renovated to a very high standard.
Great bar, and very friendly staff.
A. D.
Beautiful venue for The Classic Rock Show.Bar very well organised and no long queues.Sound quality fantastic.
A. H.
Great Venue! Jo Locke and Kenny Washington plus Scottish national jazz orchestra right in my ear.....a beautiful sound.
P. B.
Great night watching Suggs from Madness.
H. W.
Small but ideal venue. Everything is very clean. Good space for performances
I. M.
Lovely sound reproduction listening to an orchestra. Seats a wee bit uncomfortable after a couple of hours.
C. H.
Nice venue; easy to find and get to with good transport links. Friendly helpful staff; quick bar service before the gig. On this occassion our seats were upstairs which gave us a great view of the performers.
A. M.
What a great venue. Lene Lovich,Toyah and Saffron put on a great show.
I.
Great venue not too crowded but enough for a vibrant atmosphere
G. C.
Great music venue band were fantastic, beer prices reasonable will go again.
S. K.
Texas concert, couldn't see Sharlene or the stage!! Sound was great as was the band. But not a good venue if standing room allowed. People in gallery upstairs had a Fabulous view and better experience. My niece has mobility issues, so not an option for us. Wouldn't go back.
d. w.
Great smaller venue. Good atmosphere. The gender neutral toilets are an improvement. Not everyone leaves them as they find them though.
W. D.
Really enjoyed the gig, great staff abd very accessible
E. R.
Brilliant space brilliant staff. All round excellent venue
C. H.
Great venue and pleasant staff. Perfect concert hall
S. D.
Superb, small and intimate music venue. Loved coming here for gigs.
Great to be back again for live music after the pandemic.
However, despite the short set, you could almost feel the covid in the air when it got hot and stuffy.
Needs to be some form of air extraction and replacement system put in place for everyone's safety perhaps?
Otherwise great venue.
S. E.
Live music event was excellent, however, the website stated covid rules that were to be followed that weren't monitored at all - masks were not worn by the audience. The toilets were being used by male and female, which is disgusting when drunk men cover the floor in urine!
G. M.
Nice size of venue but the pews are sore on the back after a few hours
a. m.
This is a great venue for music and comedy. I saw John Finnamore here and despite being in a restricted view seat saw almost all of the stage. Good acoustics in the hall.
N. M.
Great music venue and good bar to boot.
M. k.
Saw Milton Jones here, very funny, great evening, great little venue.
N. M.
Favourite venue for gigs, not too big but big enough for a good atmosphere and sound.
M. S.
Great wee venue bar stocked wae all the fancy craft lager beer stuff if u like it been a old church converted stalls are sore pn ur ringpiece bring ur own cushion
T. C. C.
If booking to see a show, you will need to book a seat facing directly on to the stage. Side seating results in a quarter of the stage being un-viewable.
J. W.
Great venue, fantastic acoustics for music with great amenities.
Theres also disabled access
I. B.
Great historic building with a handy city centre location ample friendly staff good structure for seated gigs even the restricted views aren't too restricted, bar well stocked with beers ciders wines spirits and soft drinks and snacks although slightly on the pricey side, takes card and cash
H. H.
Enjoyed the night. Excellent act. I would recommend.
J. M.
Lovely venue, bar area and staff. Sounds are good to.
J. M.
A fantastic venue, never disappoints, with good bar facility. Acoustics are very good. Adheres to enforcing all Covid required measures.
D. E.
Brilliant concert by Steeleye Span. Great to hear such vibrant music after so long. Special praise for the fiddle player in the Band.
H. S.
Lovely acoustic. Improved comfort after refurbishment.
C. R.
Went to see the Classic Rock Show. It was amazing
T. C.
Great wee venue, beer was fantastic. 😎😎❤️
S. H.
The acoustic quality of this room is superb with the correct set up. My wife and I went to see Tokio Myers on Monday 2nd April.
J. M.
I love this venue! I've been to two gigs now and it's small size and character means that the gigs I've seen feel really intimate unlike say the hydro or secc. The bar it well stocked and not unreasonable and staff are friendly. The only complaint I've head was a lack of enough female bathrooms as they're is always quite a cue come intervals.
L. K.
My friend and I saw Jonathan Pie at the Queen's Hall and the only thing that spoiled our visit was the heat. It was unbearably hot in the auditorium but Jonathan Pie was a great show, very funny man.
M. L.
Would be five stars except there was a mix up with the seats, albeit at the behest of TMBG. Went from front row table to side pew, still a cool gig
H. M.
Great we still have this place, sound is really good wherever you sit, but seats upstairs start to get really uncomfortable if you are tall like me, and if you are at the side and the band has as many members as Big Big Train did, you can't see them all. I believe the bar is very good, but I don't drink so didn't bother. Some of my favourite gigs have been here over the years, Swamptrash, Travis, UFO, and of course Steven Wilson
D. B.
Great intimate venue, but avoid the side gallery upstairs at all costs, unless you are square on to the stage, terrible view and sore back to boot. If our neighbours sitting beside us also leaned forward to look over the handrail all would have been ok, but it's not fair to expect this of other venue patrons so we spent most of the gig sat back in our seats so as to not obscure the already limited view of the people sitting beside us.
Just to be clear though, we went to see Lissie and support Later Youth (Jo, Lissie's piano player) and both of them were excellent.
Lissie was fantastic and our first time seeing her didn't disappoint.
The sound and acoustics were fabulous and suited the piano down to a t.
We really enjoyed the night.
Now I know where my choice of seating would be I will definitely return to Queen's Hall as it made for a fantastic intimate setting.
Gig was on a Sunday night and we got parked for free within 100m of the venue.
If it's a seating event bag yourself something facing the stage and you won't be disappointed.
M. H.
Small but excellent place for recent pop concert I went to. Lissie was superb here. Staff were great, stopping people trying to use mobile phones to video/photo the concert. Don't understand these people. Just enjoy the performer!
J. A.
The new look Queens Hall is fantastic. great sound in the auditorium. fabulous bar. this old church still has praise.
C. R.
Very uncomfortable seats. Nowhere to put drinks
J. W.
This is a lovely venue with an incomparable calendar of great music. It has been one of the jewels of Edinburgh's cultural life for decades. It's an old church. Some of the seating is not very comfortable. If that's going to put you off, then stay away and miss some great performances.
C. G.
I don't want to be too critical but the Queen's Hall leaves a lot to be desired. The seating is uncomfortable and in some parts of the hall it is difficult to hear. It was not built as a concert hall so one cannot expect it to be an acoustic masterpiece.
M. A.
Great venue for an intimate Gig, but don't book seats in the centre part of the ground. The stage is very high and there's hardly any rise in the floor so you don't see a thing.
We had tickets to see Lissie on Sunday night, it was a waste of time as I couldn't see a bloody thing as there was someone's head in my line of sight.
s. f.
Great venue. The acoustics in the hall are superb. Excellent
W. B.
Nice venue. Small and intimate, which I prefer. The cafe was very reasonable. Tea and cake (really lovely and cake seems homemade), was less than £4. Parking is an issue, hence why not 5 stars.
N. C.
Always enjoy the Queens Hall. Much more intimate than the Usher Hall, and with a good small group - like the Dunedin Consort this morning - you get a really great sound. Good facilities too. Just a shame it's so far from the next place I'm going. Not ideal for the festival rush from one venue to another!
R. D.
Great venue which attracts a great selection of musicians and artists.
There is usually a choice of church pews or cabaret seating for music events which makes for a great atmosphere.
The venue is not massive so you're not watching some blobs in the distance. The sound quality whenever I've been has always been great.
They also stock Williams' beers.
What's not to like?
I. K.
Great music events, new bar area is excellent, as are new toilets.
Shame some people can't follow simple one way signs.
R. U.
Not bad venue, has restricted views, but overall OK, found drinks (wine) quite expensive,
B. A.
Great wee night out country western .night, staff helpful, friendly,
S. M.
Has had a swish interior makeover in lockdown. Main hall still the same, but better access to bar and toilets now.
H. M.
Intimate live music venue with pew style seating around the sides and standing in front of the stage. View can be restricted but they've made this clear when booking whenever I've had restrictions. It's small enough to see the artists expressions anyway so big tick in my book! Reasonably well stocked bar for a venue.
Z. 1.
The event I went to was amazing, 5* but the venue I can only give 4. It's nice enough but like anywhere in Edinburgh you need a second job if you want to afford a drink on a night out.
I'd definitely recomend a visit if you see something that catches your eye though.
O. H.
We came for a classical concert, featuring lieder and sonate. A fine concert hall, ideal for small-scale and chamber music performances. Decent acoustic. It's very important to choose the right seats at this venue - we were sat on the side gallery, and found our view of the stage about half obscured by the balcony we were on. I have also heard that the side stalls on the ground floor are uncomfortable, placed sideways to the stage, and many have views blocked by pillars. If you come here for a seated concert, make sure to get seats at the back of the hall, preferably on the balcony.
G. G.
Always a great venue. Tonight it was Mairi Campbell with an amazing band giving an outstanding performance. Truly amazing - am-a-zing! Transcendent, even. It's been recorded, I'm told. Not sure a recording can match the beauty of the live event but I'll be happy to see/hear it. Up early tomorrow... Going to be tough getting to sleep - still buzzing!!
J. M.
Great venue and enjoyable show
D. H.
Had a fun night , always a good show at the queen's hall , helpful friendly staff , keep up the good work
B. M.
Beautiful venue, great bar staff n all so friendly.
We visited Edinburgh for the Leo Sayer at The Queens Hall n were delighted with the venue and the amazing LEO, he is such an amazing singer/musician. Sooo underrated.
A superb evening in a stunning venue.
C. “. W.
A cracking little venue! There are some blind spots downstairs, due to the upper gallery supports, but they are quite thin so not much of an issue. No problems taking drinks in to the auditorium.
Staff are friendly and helpful!
The place was jumping for the Wilko Johnson gig.
J. H.
Well organised and comfortable venue..
P. C.
Went and watched Warlunda here..... Wow, absolutely amazing ❤️ The acoustics were incredible and u could feel all the vibrations through the seats. Would definitely go again and watch a concert. Only downside is room to move between rows of seats, u have 2 stand up 2 let people past but understandable for an old skool building. The experience of the acoustics will take your mind far from letting it bother u ❤️ Highly recommended it!!!
M. W.
Last here to see Otis Taylor (tonight) and I don't think I've ever been here outside of the Jazz and Blues Festival. It's a compact venue with great acoustics. You have stalls in a U-shape surrounding a central floor area (used for tables, a dance floor or a mix), seating at the sides of the stage and an upper level. The bar area is a good size with additional seating upstairs and the staff have always been very helpful. Recommended.
A. A.
Just went to see The Sweet. The venue is an old church and the acoustics are really good. A lot of stairs, some odd steps at unexpected places so watch your footing.
A. C.
Intimate concert venue. You can get really close to the performance here. Good views from the upper gallery if you prefer staying out of the scrim at the stage. Good bar, good acoustics and a great atmosphere.
A. C.
Beautiful, intimate venue. You feel caught up in the centre of a warm and wonderful performance
C. H.
Another old Edinburgh concert venue that is now out of date. No raked seating in the stalls and many seats around the perimeter have restricted views. Toilet facilities are totally inadequate. Cannot comment on the acoustics for music as I attended a Fringe comedy event. NB the venue is quite a hike from Waverley station - 20+ mins brisk walk.
B. M.
Lovely ambience and fantastic staff. This theatre is a little old and is probably due a bit of a refit in time. The stage is really audience friendly unlike some of the more modern venues I've been to. I recently seen the wonderful Jonathan Pie there and accidentally ended up in his routine when part of my front row seat broke. After the loud showstopping snap, I handed Jonathan the seat part. Enquiring if I was alright, he quickwittedly turned it all into a typical 'Pie' funny moment! The theatre staff could not have been nicer but I assured them it was a small incident. I'm a xx size large man which probably contributed...it was just one of these things. I love older theatres and this one has great atmosphere, good sound and good facilities and I would happily return and recommend to it to anyone else.
A. B.
Good venue fo a gig.
C. F.
Just phoned to book tickets for a forthcoming LEO SAYER show and my call was answered by Stephanie. What a friendly and helpful person, explaining the seating plans available and able yo answer a my questions, resulting in me booking 4 tickets (1 for wheelchair and 3 able bodied). Wonderful chat and pleased to have booked this venue with many thanks to Stephanie for her help.
J. M.
Had a wonderful time watching Suzanne Vegas perform. Enjoyed drinks at the bar beforehand and ice cream during the break. I always enjoy the atmosphere at the Queen's Hall but the views can be a bit restricted by pillars or poles, although, I didn't find that a problem this time. Couldn't give 5 stars as the bench seats are uncomfortable on your back.
J. M.
Great venue just shame the band had few blind spots for some
A. M.
Small but great venue
A. M.
A good venue but be warned when booking if the seat info tells u restricted view due to pillars. Some like seat s44 have 2 pillers in front of you. Thankfully the row wasn't full so able to move to avoid them!
A. M.
Cosy venue for concerts, good variety of music with good acoustics. Take your drinks from the bar in with you. We find it handy being on the mailing list. They do all seating events and others that are a combination of standing and seating. Easy venue to get in add out of if you live out of town.
E. R.
Excellent venue, good sound great views of stage
S. C.
A pretty cool venue for music and other shows. In church styleee there are wooden pews around the edges of the hall and upstairs and a centre section which can be used as standing, dancing area or seats added. I've been to gigs, talks and a ceilidh here (the pew seating and getting in and out was a bit of a pain for the latter!). Some seats have a bit of blocked view due to pillars. There's a decent bar and seating area outside the main hall.
B. H.
Great gig venue, it's quite small so even at the back you don't feel far away. Good acoustics and the bar area is nice too- unlike the typical venue bar!
B. R.
Wonderful evening with Jonathan Pie. The comedy was great but the seating a little on the uncomfortable side.
J. T.
The Queens Hall is one of my favourite venues. It is an old church converted to a convert venue. Small and intimate it suits classical music, folk but also copes well with the odd rock band like Hawkwind or quirky bands such as They Might be Giants.
C. L.
Lee Memphis King absolutely fantastic 💖 service at the bar also excellent. Staff very warm and friendly
E. R. (.
Great night seeing Peat & Diesel, looking forward to seeing them again tonight
J. B.
A well stocked bar and great staff let down by some of the worst seats I've ever been in. No leg room at all and my back is in bits! Still an enjoyable evening and will be back as they do have some great events coming up
a. d.
A fabulous venue for live music. New and improved bathroom facilities.
C. M.
Great show, good venue, helpful staff.
L. S.
Lovely old venue with church pews at the back and standard school-type seating at front. Bar staff are great but simply can't keep up with the volume of clients and the venue must be losing money because of this
C. M.
Can't fault this venue.
Been a few times, not been disappointed.
J. H.
Great place to hear and see favr artist - KT was there last night & the venue reallyade her shine. The music filled the venue and the sound was brilliant. Stalls had fab view and easy to stand too - and not block others' view. Would have given 5 stars BUT this had big prices at the bar - 1 pint cider & 1 glass of wine £12.75! Sadly just too much for 2 drinks. Will definately return in the future tho - loved the music hall
P. W.
Great venue acoustics, seats are from Titanic era though, I think bums must have been smaller back then but if you get a quality gig on, you will be on your feet anyway.
G. F.
Great venue but don't turn up expecting to put your coat in the cloakroom. The gig I attended wasn't sold out, we arrived as the support act took the stage and were told the cloakroom was full! Ridiculous experience of lumping jackets around.
P. S.
Great venue for music, fabulous accoustics. Very helpful and friendly staff
N. F.
Fantastic venue. Been here a few times and loved it each time. Smaller than some places but sitting right up at the stage adds to the feeling you up there with the band!
m. l.
I've seen some great gigs at this venue, it's unusual and they tend to get some very good bands on. As some people have mentioned, some seated views are restricted, but this is made clear when you're buying a ticket.
B. B.
Decent venue but doesn't really look the part inside. Decent bar. Friendly staff and decent sound quality inside. Good luck getting to Waverly for the last train to Glasgow though!
D. W.
Too many seats haves highly restricted view. It's time to build a proper raised stage.
M. F.
Went to see They Might be Giants on 5 October 2018, tickets in the stalls cost £26. Very disappointing to find that when seated half the band were obscured by what can only be described as a tower of equipment. Band were great, venue not so much as also pillars to be taken into consideration as The Queen's Hall is a converted church. Overpriced for a very, very restricted view.
J. J.
Went there for a show as part of the Edinburgh Fringe. A good venue overall but boy do those hard wooden benches with their almost useless cushions wreak punishment on your backside if you have to sit for longer than an hour.
T. T.
Cozy venue. Great view of performers. Good acoustics. Lines for the bar too long to get a drink. Easy to park nearby.
J. B.
Small but perfectly formed!
The Queen's Hall is every inch as glamorous as some of the larger venues in the city but retains a friendly, intimate vibe and hosts more diverse events.
R. P.
I went to see the Hairy Bikers & had good seats & a view of the stage. The staff were all very nice & helpfull.
I would recommend The Queen's Hall as a good venue to enjoy an evening at.
K. M.
Some of the best gigs of my life have been at The Queens Hall (Bon Iver included). It's big enough to hold a decent crowd and small enough to still feel like an intimate music venue.
T. M.
Get up close and personal.
This is a small to mid sized venue. The unique and antique interior means wherever you are seated you are close to the performance area. No screens required !
W. W.
Although i stay in Edinburgh i have never been to the queens hall but all that changed tonight with a visit for keven bloody wilson this is a small venue holds approximately 900 but its an old chapel which retains some of it old features mainly the pews which actually give you plenty of room now if you have any mobility issues there is no lift for upper gallery but an amazing flag stone floor on the ground floor now plenty of staff on hand very friendly but there was a no photo policy in force during our visit but i would say a good venue
J.
Fantastic venue, fabulous concert and a great performer.
E. H.
Good acoustics and situated on main bus routes. Seats 900 people. Seats are very upright and tiring. Attracts celebrated musicians eg. Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Good refreshments available.
E. B.
we ordered tickets online and paid for the postage. no tickets arrived and we were informed that the tickets would be available for us on the day of the show. still no tickets were waiting for us and we were at the customers desk 3 times on that day as no one knew how to help us... the show was very good though
P. M.
The Queens Hall is the best run venue in Edinburgh. Brilliant bar - superb friendly staff and plenty of them at the interval for a quick drink - fantastic range of Williams Beers. Dangerously delicious. The music acts are always sensational and the vibe is very relaxed. The seating is a bit old-school (like pews in a church) but that just adds to the unique experience. They were turned down for development funding by government arts funding body Creative Scotland (boo hiss). Come on, support the Queens Hall - get your ass down to a gig - it's the king of Edinburgh entertainment.
PS it doesn't do food - just crisps and nuts :)
C. H.
I love this venue. It's a converted church so you're almost on top of the stage. Nice bar too. Sadly no parking facilities.
I. M.
Saw Neil Finn it was a cracking gig in a venue that is somewhere between charming and quirky a throw back to the days before the grand arenas when you could hit the drummer with a tennis ball rather than a sniper rifle
Cracking bar with a massive selection at prices that didn't constitute a piss take
G. D.
One of Edinburgh's best (and only!) mid-size music venues. Be careful of restricted view seats, you might be behind a supporting pillar, but these can be leaned around!
S. D.
Great old fashioned venue. Nice intimate size for concerts with good acoustics. Bar fine prices usual Edinburgh prices.
D. H.
Presents a huge range of acts and gigs from pop to jazz to kid's events amid the wonderful acoustics and setting of a converted 19th Century church. Pre show and interval drinks available in the bar.
1.
Went to see a great comedy show here. Beautifully decorated and great acoustics for concerts, but uncomfortable seats. Typical of an old church I suppose, ha!
G. M.
Good to be back listening to live music, most people masked up as requested 👍
b. s.
Went to Phil and Allys concert last night and another great evening. The music, stories cant be beaten and good to see All Bain back at his best, big shout out to the NHS fir looking after him.
D. B.
Absolutely splendid Ed Byrne What a wag! Much chortling was had 👍👍
K. B.
Brilliant night at the Queens Hall to see the suggs night
S. A.
Excellent venue for live folk, jazz, world, classical, etc. any genre of music. Attracts some really interesting world class acts (Frigg, Penguin Cafe, Francois Leleux, Hot Club of Cowtown, SNJO, etc.)
A. B.
Great night seeing St Etienne. Good mix of standing and seating. Sound could have been a bit better but great show all the same.
N. H.
Really good intimate venue for gigs and concerts.
E. R.
Really lovely intimate venue. Drinks a bit pricey but to be expected. Not the comfiest of seats but we'll let it off since it's so characterful!
D. B.
Great sounds in this venue pity about some of the seating
R. D.
This is a great venue. You get a good view from anywhere. The acoustics were good. Staff were helpful and friendly too.
A. M.
Great venue for intimate gigs. Only criticism is the seating isn't the best, could be doing with a bit updating/upgrading but apart from that great place!
M. V.
Nice to be out again at a great wee venue. Nice vibe.
C. M.
Was here recently to see Feeder, didn't know about the venue before, even after having lived in Edinburgh previously for 5 years. It really is a good place to see a live band.
R. C.
The atmosphere was good, the music was joyful, the hall was warm,BUT the seats are hard!!We didn't let that spoil a good concert, however.
M. S.
Great venue to see great bands
A. M.
Fantastic venue, great sound, and a fantastic atmosphere, amazing the acts that use this venue, check it out or you're missing out
K. “. G. T.
Nice venue. Extremely uncomfortable seating. Not many restrooms thus long queues. Bar looks like a pop up place.
a. T.
One of the best music venues I've been to
T. B.
It's small, but the acoustics are fantastic so it makes for a great music venue. Staff are lovely and the facilities are well kept.
N. C. B.
Every year for Phil Cunningham's Christmas Songbook I travel from Germany to this fine concert hall. Always a great pleasure. Thanks. See you again in 2020.
M. S.
Weird venue. They seemed to have communication issues with the band. But there's a lot of room to groove along the sides of the upper level, so those seats aren't as bad as they originally looked.
S.
Saw Henning Wehn here really nice old building Seats aren’t comfy at all though as they are wooden benches but that’s to be expected in an old building!
J. C.
Great venue music and comedy. Friendly and helpful staff a good bar..... but too bloody hot!
N. B.
Went to see Neil & Liam Finn had a good seat inn the balcony and enjoyed the gig and the atmosphere. Good bar service and general customer service
L. Y.
Nice venue - given the age of the building, there are a few quirks, such as pillars which obstruct your view depending on where you sit. However, perhaps this is part of the charm...
R.
I worked here a couple of nights per week years ago and the jazz in the bar area was a favorite. Good venue for enjoying a close up look at the musicians.
B. B.
Bench style seating giving you slightly more room the your average venue. Foot rest bar to aid comfort
Long queues at the bars
C. J.
Beautiful historic venue. Some older seating looks fantastic but isn't necessarily comfy for a long event.
C. B.
Great acoustics in this hall
D. A.
Excellent venue. Not too big so you get a good view of the stage.
T. C.
Interesting concert hall but the sound up in the balcony seats was not great. Prices for a glass of wine at the bar are outrageous.
T. F.
A wonderful little theatre, ideal for classical music concerts, folk music, intimate theatre etc. Professionally managed. Our evening was Dunedin Consort - Bach, and we were transported.
I. O.
Great concert, good atmosphere (but too crowded) nice bar, central location, affordable ticketing.

Edinburgh Quartet
Postcard from Paris
Queen's Hall
Monday 17 November
7.30pm.
Tickets £15; Concessions £12; Students £5; Children Free
Founded in 1960 The Edinburgh Quartet celebrates an extensive and exciting history as one of the UK's leading chamber ensembles, having performed frequently at major venues across Britain and toured extensively across Europe, the Far and Middle East, and North and South America. In addition to an eventful concert schedule the Edinburgh Quartet can be heard regularly on BBC radio amongst other stations. The Quartet supports new music and living contemporary composers, such as James MacMillan, Michael Tippett and Howard Blake, however in this concert, 'Postcard from Paris', we see they are equally talented in bringing traditional classics to life. Harking back to their origin, they demonstrate what a vast range they can create.
The opening concert of their Queen's Hall season is entitled 'Postcard from Paris', as the schedule is loosely inspired by the growth in Paris' musical connections. A trio of Violinists Tristan Gurney, Gordon Bragg and Jessica Beeston and solo Cello player Mark Bailey open with Franz Joseph Haydn's String Quartet in C. Consisting of four movements, the first is light, jovial and playful, the second turns somber, slow but dramatic and the third is a Menuetto. The musicians performed this piece outstandingly. I lost myself in the music, however Haydn maintains to challenge the conventional and throws in the odd unpredicted surprise to keep us on our toes.
After a brief interlude where Violinist, Tristan Gurney explained the Parisian connections behind the performance, he introduced Claude Debussy's String Quartet in G minor. Debussy lived in Paris and I truly felt I was immersed in the throngs of Parisian life. High in energy, the piece flows from slow meandering emotion to high-tension drama. Then spirals down to a still hum, a highly emotive journey. The quartet delicately pluck the strings creating a jumpy experimental dramatic energy in the second movement. The theatrical dynamic builds with elements of cine magic. This powerful charismatic piece flows, spins, glides and tingles until finally building into a frenzy of spectacular energy. The daring contrasting movements throughout the composition produces a rich story. Debussy's revolutionary String Quartet is considered by many to be one of the finest quartets ever written and it was undeniably my favourite of the evening.
Following the interval the Quartet were joined by a solo Pianist Simon Callaghan, to perform Cesar Franck's Quintet for piano and strings in F minor. Franck was a Belgian composer who lived and worked in Paris. The Piano Quintet is one of Franck's most comprehensive instrumental compositions. The pianist opens the piece with dramatic vigour. The Quartet follow producing a powerful and wonderfully executed piece with tantalising pauses. The pianists hands effortlessly dance across the ivory keys. The emotionally charged piano Quintet evokes great sadness, elegant peacefulness then rises to a theatrical finale. The varied textures and skill of this composition generates remarkable stimulation.
The wealth of talent here was outstanding and it is beautifully well synchronised, not one note is placed amiss. I find it wonderful to be taken to another place for a few hours, away from the rat race. A moment of escapism from every day and some self-indulgent 'me time'. To lose ones self in the music and the moment. There were times you felt there was only one instrument playing, which demonstrated how exceptionally skilled the ensemble is. The conversation between instruments took us on a musical journey of heart felt energy and drama.
