Reviews of Amersham Arms

Old school pub, we're drinks are decently priced. Dance floor section that opens to 3am. Great pub. Only downside is literally only one male, female & disabled toilet in whole venue which on a busy night can be issue. Also has a decent size smoking area
D. d.
Best pub in New Cross hands down. Friendly staff, great beers, great times!! ❤️
V. H.
Place has character. There are tons of gigs and the people who work there make the bar feel homely. I've also heard the Monday night poetry events are pretty good too *cough *cough
K. H.
Great traditional venue for young bands to showcase their music. Considering the average age of the people there, the drinks were a bit expensive but staff and atmosphere great
F. O.
Fairly large capacity for mid-sized music events and festivals. Not for the faint-hearted as loud rock sound is their target, though alt-pop gigs are also held. Sound system seemed average or subpar compared to other places. Within the venue the bar area has extra speakers and it's not separated from the one close to stage, so plenty of space to enjoy your drink and music but chatting will resonate more than in other venues. Toilets a bit borderline.

A great place to see bands, nice priced drinks, and the food looked good - i wasn't eating. Friendly staff and clientele.

Went to went watch The Escape gig! Was fantastic and great venue, good selection of drinks and staff were great only criticism would be the smoking shelter could be covered as when we went it was classic British weather.

Easily to get to and from.
Venue is very "trendy" for those who like wooden floors and chair. Authentic pub and venue.
Came here for Happy Mondays comedy and it was a 6/10. First 4 acts including 2 late replacements were great. The headliner, BOMBED 😭 so only 3 stars for me
M. G.
Came here for a comedy night which was overall very good.
Thee compare was great and clearly knew his audience as many of whom he spoke to by name.
The acts we saw were trying out new material and some jokes worked some didn't.
The main event (Lloyd Griffith) was also trying out material for his upcoming tour.
I tried the cider (can't remember the name) but didn't enjoy it and so ended up on a bottled cider.
We didn't try any food as we'd had a meal out before arriving but now we know they do food it's something to consider next time.
Our only downside was the toilets. I understand from my partner that the ladies toilets were a mess with a soaking wet floor, doors that didn't lock and the men's wasn't much better from my view and also had floor tiles missing right outside the door but luckily I saw it.
The place overall needs a tidy up but we did enjoy the evening and will hopefully be back for the Monday night comedy.

Great vegan Sunday lunch. Even if your not vegan you will love it. Tasted great. Good choice of beers and friendly welcoming staff. Great place for gigs too .

Terrific pub with great service 🍻🍺
Proper old - fashioned boozer 😊
It was a pleasure for The Satellites to play there 😎 🎸🎤🎵🎶🎼
All this and Veggie Burgers 😊😋x

I didn't get a picture because it was gone too quick, but the food.
The vegan junk food is AMAZING.
The bar and gig venue is mighty fine too!
E. W.
Just the absolute best. What a vibe. What pints. Possibly the actual best burgers in London and so very reasonable.
S. C.
Happy Mondays comedy nights at Amersham Arms are a real treat. Really friendly vibe. Great mix of comedians and Sion is a great host/compere.
Table service is efficient and keeps the drinks flowing. Vegan snacks inc a great chips/dips plate for sharing.
C. D.
Amazing Sunday lunch. Everything was fantastic, but the (perhaps unlikely) star of the show was the kale and garlic! Absolutely perfect. Highly recommended to anyone who hasn't been. I will certainly be back as soon as possible!

Great small music venue, good visibility from most of the room and clear sound.

Great venue, friendly staff, even the bouncers are sweeties.

Played here with my band @officialrefuge on the 24/10/20 and absolutely loved the place. It's a fantastic venue with a great sound system and good space for the audience. Staff and security made us feel welcome, which makes a difference with a great green room to chill in and store our instruments.
This was one of our favourite places to play and drink in London, well worth the trip and look forward to going back.
R. H.
Happy Mondays comedy nights at The Amersham Arms are a real joy! Excellent compering from Sion and always top-notch acts - think Sara Pascoe, Joe Lycett, Steven K Amos, Fern Brady, Russell Kane, Stewart Lee, Holly Walsh, Lou Sanders and so many more - and all for £7 with table service drinks too
M. A.
Student venue/bar/Sunday lunch. Good food, standard beers, lovely vibe.
K. M.
Amersham Arms is definitely best pub in South London. Great atmosphere, great gigs and friendly staff. They also have everyday vegan food - tacos are amazing!!!!
P.
Great place for music performances in the back and has multiple floors!
D. W.
Canny! Class venue with nice staff and great live music! Would recommend for a night out.
O. P. M.
Such a perfect venue to watch live music, hangout at the garden or get wasted in the bar área. Super cool!
J. G.
Really great venue and lovely pub! Played a social distanced gig here a few weeks ago and it was done really well by the owner Andy and all of the bar staff. Sound quality of the venue was excellent too!
C. M.
Great events, shame they don't sell any proper bitter
A.
Lovely place, staff friendly, nice nights on regularly in the function room
Would recommend It if you're in the Area and want a beer
D. K.
Lovely pub and great entertainment. Covid rules adhered to and table service. Absolutely love this place. Definitely come again
R. P.
This place is almost opposite New Cross station so is very easy to find. The pub has a garden for those who smoke so no standing on the pavement and has a main bar area plus separate music room. Drink selection is good but prices I thought a little high, you can get the same drinks for less for instance in Camden.
I went to see a band play as was pleasantly surprised by the venue which was much larger than I expected, had clean loos and good sound.
I went on a Friday and in addition to the music area there was a DJ playing music in the main bar are too, plenty of people were enjoying themselves. Door staff no problem mostly concerning themselves with bag searches as is the case at most places these days.
Overall not a bad place at all.
M. B.
A great venue. I held a charity gig at Amersham Arms and Andy let me have the venue completely for free so that all proceeds could go to the charity - an amazing gesture.
All of the staff are awesome, both the pub and the gig room out the back are fantastic and they had a good selection of beers.
Many thanks, guys. I really appreciated it.
H. W.
Fantastic pub and renowned venue for live music. The staff were friendly and the dj was great! There was a really great line-up of live bands playing in the back, so worth it for a fiver's entry. The outdoor area is beautiful and cozy as well. Could do with some electric heaters though! Also beware of the plastic cups - they're the sort that fill up from the bottom, so whatever you do don't poke the cardboard stopper at the bottom or you'll lose your pint!
A. D.
Great music venue, enjoyed playing here with @missjewelia
S. M.
Great place to party, the bar staff don't mind if you take your shirt off but the door staff do. That said it's still one of the better venues in the area. I like it!
A. B.
What can you say about the Amersham Arms, except AWESOME. It’s such a great bar, with a great atmosphere, great music and decent choice of drinks. The bar staff are very attentive and polite and also have a sense of humour. The manager is top class, he is at the front of house and very welcoming, very personable guy. The door staff are first class, really friendly funny guys who you can actually talk to rather than being mute statues looking menacing like other venues have. The club nights the Amersham puts on are really fun and always have a good party atmosphere. This is a bar that offers a good choice of environment as well, whether its mingling on the awesome garden with several balconies/decking areas to see the city lights, or the front bar where it can get busy but that just adds to the atmosphere in my opinion or if you want to have it large, head out to the back club part of the bar to dance the night away. This is my favourite bar in south east London and it has been for many years and, just like a fine wine, just keeps getting better. Well done Amersham Arms keep it going.
J. H.
Went for Sunday lunch, food was really nice and drinks were reasonably priced. Although despite the fact that we were there early and it wasn't busy we had to wait over an hour for the food and one dish had already run out. Also the menu in the window has different prices to the actual menu.
C. B.
Great place for a cheap night out.
Normally free entry on Fridays and Saturdays with mostly indie and cheese music in the front room and more club-style music in the second room. Open until 3pm which is the latest in the area.
d. l.
Nice chilled out staff, very welcoming
L. K.
A place to come if you feel like a bit of boozy, fun dancing times. The front bar has a DJ playing when the sun goes down and they also serve burgers and sides - let's just say they make good use of their deep fryer ;) drinks were cheap enough and service was cheerful and fast. In my opinion the band room is quite large! There is a large bar out the back also and some couches to relax in if you need a break. It looks like there is potential for closing the curtains to the large stage such that the focus is the small stage in the corner, making it quite the versatile venue! Nice place to hang in the South East, will probably be going back in the near future :)
P. R.
Brilliant pub great music lovely staff
D. C.
Cool place, good beers to choose from and gets nice and lively as the night goes on (on weekends at least, not been midweek). Big room out the back for live music seen a few good upcoming acts and bands on a Friday night, normally acoustic/rock/funky stuff in my experience.
J. D.
One of the better boozers in the area, with decent mix of students and random drinkers, and some decent entertainment in the back room. Whip It is fun on a Friday and Happy Mondays comedy night is usually pretty great for a fiver or so. Shame they don't put more gigs on here though, it's a great sized little room and there's surely the audience for it in venue-starved South East London.
P. S.
wonderfull place with great atmosphere and, first of all, the staff that creates all that magic; for sure one of the best places in whole London!
D. J.
Great pub and the staff actually treat everyone tge same. The prices are reasonable, especially for double spirits. Warm welcome and they sell Martell which is the best brandy going and impossible to find these days because of brexit.
L. L.
Lively place, run by jack black
R. R.
This is a dingy and dank venue... which isn't always a bad thing. But you will need to keep it in mind if you want to drink here. Toilets are absolutely rank. However, it does have a certain something and reminds me of some old pubs around Manchester. Have a drink here, but limit your expectations. They have some events on in the function room too.
A.
Had the best night ever at the Amersham Arms! Always can count on a good night there but my 30th was extra special. I booked out some of the pub and the bar manager was very organised and went above and beyond to make sure I had everything I needed so the evening ran smoothly. Super chilled guy and really flexible. I literally couldn't believe how amazing it all was and had the time of my life. The catering he recommended at hullabaloo was fantastic and such good value and the venue itself just couldn't be better. Once again an amazing night out. No one wanted it to end! Can't wait for the next one 😀
A. M.
Great place to party on a Friday night! Cool smoking area and good variety of drinks. DJ played good dance songs but was sometimes sloppy with the song transitions. Over than that, great place to party with friends.
Y. S.
If you want to go out out.. then this is the place to go in South East London! Great music with a DJ. Sometimes there's wrestling events and vinyl fairs which are really fun. The comedy night they have is also good.
C. B.
An excellent day of socially distanced music and a gorgeous vegan Sunday roast. Just what the doctor ordered after no live music since pre-lockdown. No complaints whatsoever 😁
N.
Great venue to watch up and coming talent!
J. M.
Good sized pub with live music. Music is very loud compared to other venues. Recommend ear protection if you attend live music.
N. H.
Good venue but possibly the worse toilets in London. The smell was unbearable in the bar toilet. The back room toilet was better but there was a leak above the door as you walked in. The bar had no minimum spend on card but the back room had a £10 charge which was odd
J. H.
Great historic venue for live music - large space for the performance - but even when not full has a great atmosphere.
Good transportation links mean getting home after the show is easy as welk
D. K.
I'm one of the sound engineering team at the Amersham arms so my view may be slightly biased - however, friendly bar staff, friendly and funny security staff, good range of live music, comedy and other events. Excellent DJ's and club nights until 3 am on Friday and Saturday nights. Front bar typically has a DJ of a weekend evening and a mixture of ales on tap and the usual mix of lagers, spirits and mixers. If you are after a really good pint try Kozel - it's their signature and a good pint at £4.50. They also serve red stripe by the 440ml can if you are on a budget. Cloakroom available on club nights at £1 per item and of course amazing live sound *wink wink* come and enjoy!
S. N.
I'm a tourist not a local but I can say this pub had a great vibe really inclusive I felt very welcome even though there where plenty of locals! It was busier than the venue which we visited prior to the Amersham Arms. I enjoyed it :)
X. P.
South East London is home to one of the best places to go for a night out. Before cutting some great shapes on the dance floor at the brilliant gay disco last Saturday night (£2 in), we'd actually been in there on Friday for the free entry after pub dance club. Its just a great pub to drink in and meet friendly people, lovely staff and massive burgers. That is not a euphemism, the food is actually really good quality.
It means that you don't have to go to Camden/Central London, or pay loads to see people like Goldheart Assembly, Loom and Russell Howard. If you're not from South or East London its only about five minutes on the train from The Shard anyway and across the road from the station.
Perfect place for an informal, affordable date or just an evening's entertainment. I am happy to recommend it (and actually the decor might be very good soon as it looks like its had a bit of painting done). New Cross is definitely a going out part of town.
D. T.
Great live music venue
S. M.
As one gets older and visits pubs for a bit of variety, visiting the Amersham Arms is like revisiting the pubs you'd go to in college or uni. Standard beers, old fashioned feel but with little character. However, it springs to life on the weekends when the club opens at the back, playing a selection of bangers and classics.
s. h.
This place is a bit like the tardis. As the hour gets later more and more rooms open up. First, a large back room, and second, a curtain pulls back to reveal a stage and a dancefloor. This place is pretty good fun, the drinks are average prices, and there's a lot of dancing. Your experience will be defined by your opinion of the music. I did not like it and so won't be going back, but if Rhianna and Taylor et al float your boat then I'm sure you'll have a great time.
E. B.
Watched the Monday comedy and it was very good.
R. W.
Ran a night here for the launch of Inca Maps new EP. Andy and his team were fantastic, venue was great and sound engineer David was top notch. Would recommend this place to any artists looking for a great venue with a high quality sound system.
L. N.
Surprisingly large venue. The pub in the entrance is decent sized, but once you go through to the venue space, it's really quite spacious. Great venue and sound system.
H. S.
Love the AA - great music and performers. Great bar. Legendary gig venue - piece of London history. Still as great as it has always been.
e. a.
Lovely drinks can't wait to see live shows here again xx
M. H.
Wonderful food, service and music. So pleased it’s opened again, this is a New Cross institution
J. B.
Strange one. Got a tonne of aggro from the barman for asking that I didn't get a topped-up end of the barrel pint after he'd changed the keg. Compounded by the fact he got really aggy when I asked to see a card receipt for the transaction (when he'd taken my card and used the contactless out of my view).
Despite that, quite a nice, studenty place. And it was quite nice to see the bouncers being very restrained when someone was really aggressively shouting at them.
r. g.
Love the Amersham Arms, although I seem to spend less time there since the New Cross House and Royal Albert came onto the scene.
Great food, nice selection of drinks and good cocktails - they also have some really brilliant nights on with good music and films. Nice place to hang out, although it can make us non-students feel a bit old!
L. R.
Super cheap comedy nights with some amazing acts who you’d pay 3 times the price for elsewhere. Can get pretty cramped though, if someone is particularly popular and it’s difficult to see the act if you end up stuck behind a post in the middle..
l. T.
Staff were excellent and attentive found ordering food to be a bit of a mission so didn't bother probably because I'm a bit of a techno dinosaur
M. b.
Great space to watch new bands perform. Friendly staff and reasonably priced drinks.
M. O.
A small, local, wonderfully friendly crowd. Good music, open late, bar staff excellent and plentiful. Surely the only way to end a night at the Marquis of Granby nearby
S. B.
Amersham is the greatest. Such a fun pub full of locals, students, musicians etc. played several gigs there and always have a sweet time. A south east London necessity.
K. B.
Huge pub that regularly has nights of live music. Quirky out side smoking area and roof. Staff are friendly and always in good spirits.
S. W.
I went here for a comedy night. The staffs were lovely and service was great.
S. S.
Always loved the Amersham Arms... definitely my favourite pub in New Cross. I've spent many a lovely night there and the manager Andy has always been friendly and professional :)
M. G.
Student fuelled small pub with good prices. Live room downstairs and late nights when you want it. Good music venue.
R. D.
We played a gig at the Amersham Arms recently. The staff were supremely nice, the audience was receptive and interested in our music and the sound work was excellent. We look forward to playing there again.
t. s.
Nice pub Gd venue great place for live music more than enough space for drinkers and music goers alike drinks can get expensive but they have a cheaper range as well prices from 4.40 a pint 2 about 5.80 and spirits for a double around 5.20
N. P.
Great night out - good live venue! Gets very overcrowded. Cool winding back alley beer garden.
D. R.
Yeah it's a decent place although it seems to be overrun with the Kent Klan lately! Honestly can't you people stay in your own area without trying to drive down and infect ours! I know there isn't much there apart from a few trees and fields, but can'y you just make the most of what you have without becoming a disease and spreading to our area?
E. E.
Friday night late drinks down the pub followed by a packed dance floor (wait till midnight) in the next room! Reasonably priced drinks and friendly staff!
M. B.
Definitely a trendy bar/pub. Not the cleanse place in the world. Good for students has good verity of music and live bands. Prices are fair
C. H.
The weekly programme offers entertainment for everyone. Mostly Comedy and live music as well as serving food and a wide selection of drinks. Great value and open late.
J.
Fun night every time.
B. D.
On a gorgeous balmy Saturday evening, sitting outside The Amersham Arms, I whiled the shrinking day outside drinking beers with my besties, hatching plan and bouncing ideas. I'm sure it could be done at any pub, but The Amersham seems to be coming in to it's own as does New X, with this place in particular regaining it's status as the crown jewel for live music again.
After the previous owners kinda giving up on the place, it has now been revived, with the likes of Caffy St Luce, promoter and gig mistress extroadinaire, photographer Rupert Hitchcox and the wonderful manager Andy, who even takes time to say hi and how ya doing, if he recognizes you or even if he doesn't. Cordial to a tee and great bunch of bar staff as well. With all sorts of industry types in attendance for Artful and soon to be added Toejam and Panda Power nights this place is gonna become a powder keg for new music! Bring it...
A. R.
Visited after watching Millwall game , very quite pub bit pricy but a nice pint of Guinness , we left at 8 nobody else in there strange for a Saturday evening ??
C. M.
Amersham Arms used to be a true hot spot it the area. Unfortunately I can't say the same now. It looks barren and the quality and variety of the menu have seriously gone down a lot. Hope to see it blooming again, then I might reconsider visiting.
N. R.
Andy the manager is super friendly & helpful, the terrace is spacious and me and a group of people from Scandinavia had a good time. Lovely bar staff.
M. P.
Not the classiest, but with friends it can be a great night. Two rooms, a good beer garden and cheap drinks.
L. K.
Absolutely loved it was able to up close and personal with the band's and chat with them a really good place u can be yourself no judgement just good vibez
A. G.
Excellent venue and atmosphere. Polite bouncers, great bar staff. Highly recommended
A. H.
Always a good atmosphere, lovely bar staff, good gigs and great vegan grub. What's not to like.
B. B.
Great Vegan food and very reasonably priced. We came for an event, the pub has a great atmosphere and friendly bar staff!
B. C.
Fantastic pub and venue
T.
Attended deeviate event which was awesome.. Pub itself was great couldnt fault it. The main room had a bit of old george 4 vibe from brixton!, amaze!
M. B.
Friendly bunch of people. Good night with a band too boot
C. A.
Sweet venue with nice private room at the back with stage, I'm a photographer though and the lighting wasnt the greatest but otherwise nice.
P. K.
Nice rock vibe but the kids behind the bar have no idea how to make drinks..
Got served a double whiskey in a konyiak glass 😂
S. B.
The comedy on a Monday is great. The beer is cheap for London. It attracts the student crowd of Goldsmiths here. The toilets are gross.
U. P.
Amersham Arms has been amazing to work with creating various events & the staff are always welcoming, will definitely forward them on to family and friends.
S. W.
Came here for a comedy show and the staffs were lovely
J. M. A. T.
Greatllace for events, classic beers and card payment, vegan menu, not very elaborated but good enough.
S. R.
First time visit, There is a large room at the side of the pub which can seat up to 300 people. Live comedy seems to be the in thing at the moment.
J. S.
Played a gig here, great sound, stage and amps.....bouncer and owner were way to strict tho.
C. S.
I love this pub I've been going there for years I never let you down but it's a night club more than a pub the best time to go there is on the weekends.
r. g.
An excellent place for drinking alcohol.
J. D. T.
Great music venue. Played some nice gigs to a nice supportive audience. Will be back again soon.
S. 2.
The upstairs area is the best
A. G.
Good place to see live music - plenty of space for the crowd, and not too long a queue for drinks/loo.
A. H.
Went to Half Nelson Wrestling Night last week - what a cool fun place! DJ's were brilliant, great atmosphere
G. M.
This place is great for a good laugh - non pretentious, DJ was playing some cracking music, reasonably priced drinks and a good crowd. Will definitely be back!
J. R.
Great pub dark moody and music.... good beer too... friendly staff also
g. I.
Is a great area to listen to talented people singing and must say I enjoyed it. Most when Icyjones host the events 😂
m. f.
Great staff, fantastic for gigs. A real gem
H. C.
Absolutely awesome weekend!!! Amazing music and staff - great way to spend Halloween weekend!! Never fails to disappoint!
R. B.
great place for live music!
M. D.
Great venue and good size
D.
Crappy music. Expensive drinks. Arrogant bouncers.
Except for the curly haired attractive deejay.
N. P.
Great laid back community pub with outside seating and good beer. Nice crowd.
G. S.
Nice pub and good Monday stand up show, good prices
J. M.
Expensive and cramped student pub, good smoking area and late night opening but otherwise unexceptional
A. M.
Student local. Live venue at back. Seen some comedy Nights there. Food was ok from what i recall. Worth a visit
D. a. S. P.
As a pub and for food there are much better around, but for the comedy Mondays this place is amazing value!
s. k.
Could play more modern music and have a proper dj on especially on a Saturday. But got good vibes there.
R.
good night out , always good for the start of the night or end of the night , great staff , good music most of the time
N. J.
Good venue to see live music. Sound and lighting was good . Prices were reasonable.
J. C.
Good boozer sometimes full of pretentious art students but usually they're alright after a few beers
D. F.
Great atmosphere better option than venue price wise and for fun too
F. F.
Great venue. Loads of possibility BUT difficult to get to if you're not local.
F. D.
Great atmosphere, lots of different nights here. Always fun and open late.
V. W.
Friendly people but only Doom Bar on cask. A bit tired. There are better places in the area.
L. P.
Nice little pub, great back room venue, big smoking area
C. S. L.
So much fun had here. Am New Cross/Deptford local. This is one of the regular haunts for a friendly vibe and catching cool entertainment.
E. R.
Lots of great events from a comedy club with well known performers to child friendly raves.
L. L.
Really good place for going out with friends with some rock and pop music.
j. w.
Good location train station across the road good pub and good sized venue at back of pub
G. G.
Nice pub with a good size music room at the back.
J. K.
Happy Mondays!!! Best comedy night around. Great value. Great atmosphere.
M.
It ok here, only been for a promotional gig could do with an update and a internal lick of paint
D. H.
Excellent pub. Decent beer. Not a tw@tty gastropub.
I. H.
Got some great gigs here, although It is a bit rough and ready!
S. X.
Welcoming
