Reviews of Hoopla Impro
M.
I have done a couple of classes with Hoopla and I have learnt so much. I really enjoyed learning how to create a scene and all the different things you can use to get into it : Character, emotion, action etc . The whole experience was very supporting and encouraging. I definitely feel I have made breakthroughs in building my confidence in performing and engaging with that side of things again. I have a new love for Improv , I feel a more playful energy has begun to come back to me.

The Beginners Improv course was very uplifting, to use your body and mind in ways I haven't since childhood. I met so many fun people. I enjoyed the freedom of just doing and not being overly cerebral. Also learning to hold and create space for others to share, and trusting other people in the group to create together. I really enjoyed it, and gained a lot from the experience.

Love coming here for shows. Such a good vibe and space. Also the Miller has great food which is wonderful 🌟

Steve at Hoopla took a group of around 30 work colleagues through an hour long experience that they are still talking about. He even engaged with people participating virtually. He tied each exercise back to the objectives we discussed prior to the session and made it very relevant to the work we do. Even if you've done other improv with your teams, I'd highly recommend a session with Hoopla, especially for teams with less experience presenting to clients.
C. J.
The class was fantastic! Maria brought a fabulous energy to each class. The techniques for creating and sustaining characters were invaluable. We also had plenty of scene practice.

Really encouraging space, loads of games, fran was a fab facilitator, live show was scary but so proud that we all did it, lovely group, loads of women. Really glad i did it, made me feel great by the end.

This is the most fun I have had in a long time. Although I was taking myself out of my comfort zone within a few minutes of the first session starting we were playing silly games and laughing with each other. Conor, the leader, was excellent. He was super encouraging and gently nudged when he could see where an improvement could be made. Age was not a barrier - within a couple of sessions everyone was happy working with everyone else. And, a real bonus, we went for a drink after the first session. Because we had been laughing together for the previous couple of ours the group just jelled and this continued for the rest of the course. I would highly recommend.
D. M.
fun, silly, great teaching - very supportive and encouraging. Great group, all happy to jump in and go for it.

It was fun, open and gave me great confidence in pursuing stand up comedy further! Would highly recommend this for someone who wants to dip their toes into the comedy world even if stand up isn’t for them! Cheers Steve

I've just completed Level 1 Improv and it was such a great course! I cannot tell you how much playing for 2 hours a week has changed my mindset and positively impacted my mental health. I hoped it would help, but the difference has really been remarkable. Honestly, I think improv might be magic!
The teacher was supportive and empowering and the course structure was varied and interesting...I cannot recommend Hoopla enough. Looking forward to starting Level 2 now!

I’ve had the pleasure of attending Hoopla classes in real life and online and both experiences have been amazing. The classes are so well structured and give everyone a chance to play, have fun and learn more about improv. Every session makes me cry with laughter and leaves me feeling so uplifted! Thank you Steve and Liam!

The Hoopla Scenes course with Suki Webster and Maria Peters has been truly fabulous. Aimed at advanced improvisers, it focused on how improvisers can elevate scenes that plateau or get stuck. It has been full of ideas and plenty of stretch and challenge. Suki and Maria shared their experience generously and guided us with honest and helpful notes and side coaching. Highly recommended. Hoopla Impro is our favourite place to perform. The audience is always lively and warm. The hosts, tech and FOH always make us feel very welcome and supported.
The in-house shows are always excellent plus we loved sharing a line-up with wonderfully funny acts such as The Maydays, Abandoman, The RH Experience, Bumper Blyton and Do Not Adjust Your Stage.
The bar below serves great food suitable for our dietary needs and the has some tasty craft beers for after the show.

I did the Online Story course and it was amazing. Steve is a great teacher, and I feel like I learned so much about grounding longforms in a story, having an overall structure in mind and how that helps you to sustain a longer improv. There also was a ton of games I totally loved such as the genre cauldron. Would definitely recommend.
Also there’s overall a great community on the jams and drop-ins which are run extremely well!

I've just finished the Level 1 Beginners Improv course and it was honestly the best fun I've had in a while. The classes were not intimidating at all. Jonah was an excellent teacher, breaking down each exercise and making them accessible to all. He excelled at building our confidence and participation each week in a non scary way and I'm grateful to to have a bunch of super fun people. Thank you, I can't wait to start the next level!

I've taken loads of Hoopla online courses in lockdown, starting with a taster session, moving on to Levels 1 & 2, and continuing with all kinds of awesome and inspiring stuff that ranges from Jungian to Emotionally Connected approaches to scene work. But, most of all, I've met lots of brilliant and talented new people (from the teachers to the other students), making friends I would never have otherwise met (some as far away from England as Mexico), and I've always had an absolute ball doing it. Steve Roe is a super generous, hilarious, and supportive guy who has created a school that nurtures his vision. I've loved so many of my teachers, special shout outs to Maeve Ryan and Chris Mead who are also amazing. Hoopla is a fantastic place to get your first foot into improv, and the online classes have been a true lifesaver for me in lockdown.
I.
Online Beginners Improv 1 - Liam made me feel welcome as a novice to Improv. Encouraging and engaging! An idea was never wrong. The course had me in stitches. What I loved most was when each member of our class would return from their group exercise with a huge grin on their face.
If you haven't booked this course yet, what are you waiting for?! Do it!

I sighned up for the level 1 begginers course back in March 2020. Despite lock downs Hoopla kept up all their courses and moved onto zoom to meet restrictions. Since then I have gone onto do my level 2 intermediate, a comody sketch, story and character course, as well as attendeding one off workshops and jams regularly. Hoopla are fantastic. They are so welcoming, encourging and supportive of your own progress and journey in improv. Hoopla has also reached out into many different comunities making improv accessible for all. They have adapted to change and I highly recomend them. Cant wait till I can enjoy working face to face on stage.

Just completed Level 2 course with Hoopla and did the performance. I had an amazing teacher in Jonah who put us at ease and really encouraged all of us to go out of our comfort zones. He really had confidence in all of us and guided us very well throughout 8 weeks giving us suggestions. Jonah definitely created a safe space as well for us to really go for it.
I also did the Level 1 course with Jinni who was also brilliant. She was very friendly and really got the group working as a team very quickly.
Anyone whose interested in doing an improv course should definitely look into Hoopla Improv.
K. H.
The level 2 course with Jonah was great! Amazing atmosphere, a safe environment and loads of fun! The 8 weeks flew by so quickly. Jonah really prepared us well for our end of course show - didn't think I could do it, but he had all the confidence in us. Awesome group of people as well on the course - loved it!
My level 1 course with Rhiannon was also brilliant! Best intro to improv and got me hooked.
L. N.
I've been doing courses and drop-in classes with Hoopla since the beginning of lockdown and I cannot recommend them enough.
I've known Steve Roe for 10 years and he manages to inject the same energy and carefree fun playfulness online as he does in real-life workshops. You learn a lot about improv while being amused and having fun at the same time.
You even forget everyone's not in the same room!
The best therapy for lockdown boredom one can have.
A. K.
I took the 6 week beginners improv course and loved every minute of it! Loved playing the games and meeting new people. The course was a special experience, I feel much lighter and more confident as a result. It was great fun and I would recommend it to anyone! I’m currently on level 2 and excited to continue taking the classes and having fun!
Q. K.
On stage after level 2, gotta say we smashed it! Really recommend their courses 🖤 Our teacher - Jonah created a safe environment for us to really gel and feel at ease and support each other.
R. J.
I've now taken 2 classes with Hoopla, and have had the best experience in both. The Level 2 class with James was incredibly supportive and welcoming, and really helped to solidify performance techniques, stage craft, and just having loads of fun whilst improvising. Amy's Level 3 class was also fantastic; she is an incredibly supportive teacher, and really helped to consolidate our learning through a huge variety of techniques, and lots of handy notes and tips. And all the shows I've been to see at Hoopla have been wonderful! Can't recommend Hoopla courses or shows highly enough!
L. W.
I've had the greatest experience with Hoopla Improv! I took the level 1 beginner course, having had no previous experience with improv. I loved it so much that I went on to take the level 2 and 3 courses with the same teacher (James is the best!). It can feel very intimidating and scary when you begin, but the environment at Hoopla is extremely supportive and welcoming. Everybody there wants you to succeed and they are willing to help you to make it happen. I'd highly recommend taking a course, or even simply stopping by to see one of their excellent shows.
E. N.
Love coming here for shows. Such a good vibe and space. Also the Miller has great food which is wonderful 🌟

I'm now on Level 3 of this course and I absolutely love it. Jonah has taught me for Levels 2 and 3, and I can honestly say he is a highly constructive and charismatic teacher who brings out the best in everyone.
I was also taught by Rhiannon for Level 1, and she was equally brilliant. She encouraged the shyest of people to come out of their shell and provided a really supportive environment. All in all, Hoopla have some fab teachers and their classes are great fun. Definitely give it a go.
M. A.
Just completed the Level 1 Intro to Improv with Jonah. It was so much fun, laughed and learnt a lot.
Apart from being very funny, dynamic and engaged as a teacher, Jonah was full of knowledge and experience; he really knows his craft. He was a great director and facilitator, able to provide solid examples and robust feedback to help guide our group. He created a welcoming, light, positive and inclusive atmosphere.
I found the course to be well paced, with a very natural progression through the weeks. It was never dull and always challenging to the right degree.
Hoopla themselves are brilliant too; they reach out for feedback half way through the class, and at the end. The space was large enough and well run. As part of the course you are offered half price tickets to any hoopla shows for you AND friends/family, (and hoopla shows themselves are a great value fantastic evening out in any case.)

It was fun, open and gave me great confidence in pursuing stand up comedy further! Would highly recommend this for someone who wants to dip their toes into the comedy world even if stand up isn’t for them! Cheers Steve

Hoopla continues to impress with the skill and warmth of its instructors. It’s been a real pandemic silver lining for this American to be able to take improv in London with Hoopla. The teachers are universally excellent.

An incredible experience with Hoopla - safe enviornment in which to learn, great games and a brilliant atmosphere. Monica and Jonah are incredible teachers, and they've been great mentors throughout my first steps in the world of improv. Would highly recommend the Hoopla course to anyone who wants to have fun, hang out will some great people and laugh loads.
D. M.
fun, silly, great teaching - very supportive and encouraging. Great group, all happy to jump in and go for it.

I went to the Hoopla Improv 1 course a little nervous but loved every minute of it. The classmates were all super friendly and James the teacher was very funny and supportive. One of my favourite experiences of late. Highly recommended, much fun
M. L.
I enjoyed the exercises, the specific group, the teaching, the fun and relaxed dynamics,... so, everything actually :)
E. W.
Had an amazing experience with Hoopla Level 2! Our instructor/spiritual leader Jonah was an amazing teacher and a very big supporter and helped us grow each week. His hosting skills on our show night were equally impressive. Thanks!
N. S.
I just finished completing my Level 1 improv class last night and I could not be happier! The class was absolutely amazing and I learned so much about myself in the process! My classmates were all incredible people and they really are like family to me now😊 And last, but certainly not least, our teacher, Jonah, was absolutely amazing every single step of the way! His teaching skills are truly next level and he makes every effort to make one feel included, and you can tell that he really genuinely cares about the well being of each and every single one of his students! I honestly cannot say enough good things about him (and Hoopla, of course)😊👍
Keep up the great work and here is wishing you all a wonderfully equanimous day, and may all of your days filled with peace, love, health, happiness, and truly so very much more😊
With so much Metta it could literally tilt the earth off its axis and then push it back to its original state,

Unfortunately I didn’t get to experience what the beginners session had to offer. As the instructor was 15mins late to the Zoom call and my nerves got the better of me I didn’t attend the class. However Steve kindly reached out to confirm what had happened and went above and beyond offering a refund and a future class.
Problems were resolved quickly, great service.

What I love so much at Hoopla, apart from the excellent teaching and encouraging welcoming classes, is the warm supportive atmosphere. Everyone is very positive and friendly and you have no fear of joining a class by yourself as everyone is usually alone but you leave feeling part of a community. And wanting to do more. I have done four courses at Hoopla and will do as many more as I can. They have really created something special and if you want to try Improv don't hesitate, they will enable you to feel relaxed and happy. And as they say, you don't have to be funny, clever or good to take part!
C. P.
Hoopla is not just a fabulous place to learn improv. You are part of a supportive, encouraging, inclusive, kind and joyful community. You meet great people, have wonderful teachers and have opportunities to see shows and perform every week. It literally becomes a lifestyle and I am privileged to be able to train here. Best acting decision I ever made!!!
K. S.
This is one of the best things I've done with my life! It started out as a bit of fun and wanting to do something different with my Wednesday evenings. The atmosphere in the classes is great - really supportive and playful. It was the most fun I'd had in ages and I signed up for more. My classmates were all lovely, interesting people doing it for a variety of different reasons. We bonded over experimenting with the silliest things we'd tried since we were eight, and the weekly hit of uplifting madness. A year later and I'm still enjoying the fantastic positive energy of Hoopla. I've met some wonderful people who are now firm friends, surprised myself with what I can do onstage and laughed so hard I've cried on numerous occasions. Do it! There's room for everyone regardless of ability, confidence, shyness. Join us.... you won't regret it :)

My improv journey began with Hoopla’s beginner course and I loved it so much I went on to do all their courses! From the start classes were super friendly and always fun. I also regularly went to their Monday night drop-ins which are an awesome way to start the week. Hoopla teachers really go all out to create a space where you feel comfortable and inspired to let your inner improv animal out to play. Thank you Steve Roe and your inimitable band of merry teachers:) Also, I have seen many shows at Hoopla’s Improv Comedy Club over the last 3 years and it’s always a grand night out! They have a diversity of performances with top class and up-and-coming groups on stage. What makes this place great is not just the shows though but the audience which always has a happy vibe. Food and drinks downstairs in the Miller Pub are very good too. Cherry on the cake is late bar opening on the weekends:)

Fantastic course at Hoopla Impro (Level 2) with comfortable progression from games to scenes, culminating in a first performance! ... Jonah was wicked - supportive, encouraging and giving super tips along the way. would definitely recommend!
P. K.
I have done Improv level 1 and 2, and absolutely loved it. James is a brilliant teacher, he makes you feel relaxed, creates a fun atmosphere, and shares encouraging and helpful feedback. I'd highly recommend the course!
I. H.
The Improvisation for Beginners course was a great way to lose inhibitions and just have fun in a friendly, supportive and encouraging environment. The course provided gradual but steady progress with improvisation games, exercises and techniques in easy, manageable steps that built naturally upon the previous lessons of the course.
I very much liked being able to sign up for a short, 8 week package of classes that was a complete and independent course in itself, without having to go through audition or interview procedures and without having to make a long-term commitment. I will, though, certainly want to follow up with more courses.
A very enjoyable course that enhances confidence and provides a solid foundation for further future courses. Jinni Lyons is an excellent teacher!
A. W.
Great to instantly connect with people, drop barriers and have fun for a few hours a week. I felt like I was developing personally in a supportive, fun environment and that felt great.
Level 1 improv course - What a blast! I'll miss it, I'd love to continue. Monica had a great presence and really made it for me. I think it was infectious across the whole group and we bonded really well. Great fun, great experience, great value! It's nice to have an experience like this in London.
Level 2 improv course - Jonah was a great teacher, thorough and lead by example really well. He prepped us for the show quite subtly, without freaking us all out and so we maintained a sense of fun and enjoyment throughout the course. I really feel like I've progressed as an improvver and I plan to keep going with Hoopla.
R. M.
I took Hoopla's beginners course and loved every minute of it. The instructor made everyone feel welcome as we learned the basics of improv. I looked forward to taking the class each week as it was a great way to get out of your head and have real fun. By week eight, it was amazing to see how far we have progressed as a group. As they say on the site, you need no background whatsoever in acting or performance & you're guaranteed to have a great time. In fact, I've already signed up for their performance improv class and can't wait to get started!
p.
Fantastic organisation to learn improv with. I did level 1 with James and Level 2 with Jonah and both exceeded my expectations.
Being completely new to the performing arts, the Hoppla courses & teachers did an excellent preparing me for my improv stage performance. My group and I all felt comfortable, confident, and well prepared for the show and the audience feedback was amazing!
I strongly recommend Hoppla to anyone who is either looking to give improv a shot and/or those looking to improve their skills.
S. W.
Cannot recommend the Beginners Improv course highly enough. Really good fun and encouraging introduction to improv. Our teacher Jonah created a fun, safe creative space to start getting to grips with improv techniques and games before putting together short scenes. Will definitely be booking another course with these guys.
E. L.
I've just completed the Musical Improv course (my fourth Hoopla course)! I loved the atmosphere of the classes, the wide range of games and scene styles that we explored, and the accessible way in which Phil taught us about some of the more technical elements of improvised singing - honestly, I enjoyed the whole thing! It was exactly what I'd wanted, and more.
E. K.
I took the 8 week improv course for beginners, taught by the wonderful Jonah Fazel. Was cackling every lesson, and gained more and more confidence in how to "yes, and..." with a whole range of games and scenes. Thanks to Jonah's escalation of improv techniques and approaches each session, it was easy to step away from fear of performing in front if others, and towards being excited about where taking that plunge might lead. Great fun and we'll worth the time and money. Now looking forward to taking the next level. Thanks for being a great and encouraging teacher, Jonah!
L. D.
A great place to see improv! I definitely recommend the Improv courses at Hoopla. I just finished the beginners one with Liam and I am extremely satisfied on how it went! Liam is a really good teacher and the course is very well designed to get you from the fear of performing to a good level of confidence!

Hello,
Although I had been writing stand-up material before I met Hoopla, I had never imagined I could polish and perform them myself on stage. I was lacking lots of qualities. When a friend of mine strongly recommended Hoopla, I booked in to a first available stand-up class.
Our teacher Max was amazing. He simplified the whole process and encouraged us to come up with some material and perform in front of the class. His recommendations and directions after our performances were so encouraging, so eye opening and so lifting. He literally built my confidence. Max is the reason for my successful performance when we did our show in front of an audience. I have to say Nick was also so amazing when he covered three lessons whilst Max was away. Finally, my classmates! I had a great time with them. They were so supportive and so funny.
Hoopla and the team, thank you so much for the great lessons and the support. Your passion made me passionate about my stand-up! I am so grateful and happy.
Thank you.

I loved the Beginners Improv course so much! Steve is an amazing and talented teacher, who helped us all to cohere as a group and quickly grasp the fundamentals of improv from day one with lots of great games and exercises. The time always passed so quickly and everyone in the group had great experiences and feedback. I would highly recommend it!
S. P.
Hoopla is awesome! I have no hesitations in recommending their courses or a night out at the Miller to see a Hoopla show. I did a beginners course in 2016, a few more since then, and I love it. It’s such good fun, and the workshops and courses are super supportive. Well worth giving Hoopla Impro a try!
B. G.
UPDATED: Hoopla has done an amazing job of adapting to online courses, drop-ins and performances. It's a great way to have fun, connect and enjoy a laugh or two during lockdown. In 2019, I completed 2 in-person improv classes with Hoopla and couldn't be more impressed. The instructors are world-class. Jonah Fazel in particular is highly skilled at nurturing an eclectic group of newbies and fostering trust and community, while also keeping us in stitches with his quick wit. His commitment and energy are super inspiring. Allison Goldie is gifted at helping new performers build self-confidence. The operations team keep run a well-oiled machine. Give it a go!

As a newcomer to improv, I feel so lucky to have discovered Hoopla. What a fantastic company. I just can't recommend them highly enough! If you're thinking of doing an improv course, you definitely won't be disappointed. You'll genuinely laugh till you cry and stretch yourself in ways you never thought possible. I took the beginners class with James Witt, who has been such a kind and generous teacher that 6 weeks in, I'm completely addicted and have just booked the next course. Bravo Hoopla!
N. T.
Just completed Level 2 of the Hoopla training with Jonah Fazel and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Not only was it a fab group of people, but Jonah was awesome and made us all feel supported and encouraged, gently coaxing us out of our overthinking heads and into really pushing ourselves, playing and trusting our instincts. The performance night was a real highlight. Feel very fortunate to have had you as a tutor!
I’d highly recommend these courses to anyone on the fence. Just do it! I’ll definitely be continuing.
Shout out to the fabulous Jen Rowe, my tutor from the Level 1 course too. Equally brilliant!
Thanks!

Improv has filled my lockdown and I have loved it. Never done it before, or in person yet, but over zoom throughout lockdown has been so much fun, I have loved playing and I'm seeing the impact in the rest of my life because I'm much more confident.
N.
Hoopla improv classes are fantastic. I took the beginner course last term and loved it - tons of fun, you learn so much, meet great people and laugh until it hurts. Awesome being part of such a great group, in a space where it's totally ok to be brilliant, be rubbish, be anything at all... The teachers are great, super encouraging and helpful. It's superb fun, and also really useful for life and interactions in general - improv is about supporting each other in whatever happens, and that's amazing anywhere. I've just started my second course, one lesson in and it's total magic. Thank you Steve, Liam and the whole team - and everyone I'm meeting and having a hilarious and supremely fun time with along the way!
N. B.
Could not recommend higher. What started out as a fun way to spend a few evenings and learn something new quickly became so much more. Hoopla courses and shows play host to a supportive, fun and alive community of people. All trainers are great at creating a friendly environment (so you don't have to feel brave to show up) and the shows always feel like they are pushing the envelope of theatre.
K. C.
I started doing Improv with Hoopla at the beginning of this year, after seeing a friend do a show and it has been one of the best choices of my life.
The class are an ideal size and you meet some brilliant people who are all there to have fun and support each other. You end up building a sense of camaraderie with the group of people you do the course with as you're all in it together doing silly things, having laughs and making mistakes. The biggest plus for me is being able to perform at the end of the course and it really adds to the learning and development.
The teachers on the courses are fun, relaxed and extremely supportive. They are experienced and talented performers and it comes across in the methods that they use to teach.
The company are committed to being inclusive, open, supporting and are always looking for ways to make improvements within the Improv scene.
I would highly recommend doing a course with Hoopla, if you are looking for something different. For me, it is a great way to relax and be free. You do not need to come from an acting or drama background (I don't) and there are not many other activities in London which can give you all that I mentioned above.
B. T.
Liam did a fantastic introduction to improv workshop for us! None of us had tried improv before and we were a bit nervous beforehand, but Liam made us feel at ease from the very beginning and guided us through so many fun games and exercises. All of us absolutely loved the session! Super team building exercise as well. Would warmly recommend Liam if you're looking for any improv workshop!
L. W.
Hoopla Impro is awesome.
I’ve done a number of courses with them. They were fantastic and really helpfu build my love of improv and comedy as well as improve my confidence.
Check out James and Liam.
The Miller is a great place to see shows, hangout and eat! Lovely food and good booze. Five starts all round 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Amazing Online- and Offline Improv-classes!! Great group of people and always leave their classes with a big smile! Can highly recommend, if you wanna improve your life with improv!
N. B.
Hoopla is amazing! A fantastic company with fantastic teachers. I took up improv a year & a half ago as I enjoy comedy, never imaging I could do a show, and now I'm performing regularly! I have done around 6 or 7 courses with hoopla and each have been excellent. Teaching to a fantastic standard, lovely people who have become good friends and the opportunity to perform at a cool venue. So greatful to hoopla and all it's staff. Totally recommend doing improv with hoopla, it's a great organisation to be part of & support! Helen.

Hoopla is an incredible place - it’s one big party and everyone is invited. For anyone who has ever felt shy or nervous or just wanted a little more confidence in day-to-day interactions, Improv is a skill worth having. Hoopla’s teachers have a house style which is warm and welcoming and playing in workshops is one of the most joyful, creative things a person can do. Go there. Laugh. Make friends. Be awesome.
M. S.
Hoopla is a fantastic company that has added huge enjoyment to my life for the past two years. They teach improv starting at absolute beginner level, making it fun and accessible for everyone. In lessons, the brilliant Hoopla teachers place emphasis on having fun, not worrying about trying to be funny or clever, working as a team, and creating a safe and friendly environment to play in.
After the beginners course, most courses come with an opportunity to perform at the end of it, at the fantastic Miller pub in London Bridge.
In my opinion this is exactly how improv should be taught.
A. H.
I've done most of the courses at improv, each as interesting and rewarding as the last. The improvised theatre course is the latest I've done and it has been thought provoking, challenging, creative, varied and the trust built in such a short time was amazing. This was one of those times where the course, teacher and group all came together. Such a fantastic course, a great style of improv to learn and can't fault Chris as a teacher"
S. J.
I love taking classes with Hoopla! I've done the Performance course with Jinni and am currently in the Long-Form course with Maria. These women are such talented performers and are so passionate to share everything they know about improv with you! I was always intimidated by improv, but Hoopla is such a welcoming and supportive community, I have found it's a great environment to learn and meet some amazing people.
S.
Hoopla has it all, amazing teachers, really fun courses and a wide variety of teaching for all levels.
I've taken Beginners Improv, Improvised Theatre, Clowning, Commedia del Arte and various Drop Ins.
Every teacher is so passionate and truly cares. I will continue to train with Hoopla and highly highly recommend it to everyone.
There is no better environment to experience impro :)

Hoopla is amazing. Always thought improv was not as interesting and too scary but after the first workshop with Steve I became a total convert and I am now attending a course after the other (beginners, performers, narrative, and I’ve already booked Harold) and I feel I’m slowly growing, as an improviser and as a person. English is not my first language so improv will probably always be very scary for me, but at the end of the day it’s SO MUCH FUN and I feel like a found a new family.
See you at The Miller!

YOU GET TO BE A KID AGAIN!
After reading that it was not necessary to be funny or to have experience in order to do their Beginners' Workshop, I decided to give it a try. I'm very pleased that I did.
Chris did an AWESOME job facilitating the workshop last weekend, and the bottom line result was that the very same evening, I signed up for Hoopla's 8-week Beginners' course, to which I am looking forward.
I would describe the workshop as "silliness and fun, with a purpose". While the exercises individually seemed a bit silly, it became possible to see a purpose in each, and as the day developed it also became clear that there they were ordered in a thoughtful manner. Collectively they provided each participant with enough basic skills to "have a go" at some very brief improv scenes towards the end of the workshop.
Chris' overall effect as a facilitator was to create a positive, mutually supportive group dynamic very early on, which then allowed participants to relax, trust one another, take chances, and have fun. He was able to judge where the group was and to provide appropriate direction at all times; he was also effective at guiding the group along while maintaining a feeling of creative freedom. Not everyone can do that -- in fact, most people cannot -- and he did it exceptionally well. At the end of it, I was thankful for a day that had been more about fun and less about hard work compared to what I might have expected going in.

Just finished my level 1 improv course with James Witt, and I had the best time imaginable! 8 weeks of sheer fun and an evening I’d look forward to every time. James is the best, Hoopla is the best, and I can’t wait for level 2.

I've completed several courses with Hoopla, all the way from beginners, through Narrative and long-form formats. I've been lucky enough to have been taught by some of the best teachers in the UK, like Chris Meade, Katy Schutte, Steve Roe and Maria Peters through Hoopla, and every course has been an absolute joy. I can't recommend Hoopla high enough to anyone looking to begin, continue or advance their improv journey.
I. M.
I decided to try improv as a New Year's things in 2013. I couldn't have wished for a better experience. I was quickly put at ease and had so much fun that improv has become a major part of my life. The workshops are run by some super-experienced teachers and are always huge fun. The shows at the Miller are in the same vein - some of the best groups on the scene and all for a few pounds. I couldn't recommend Hoopla any more highly!
T. C.
I used to think that taking an improv course as a no-native speaker would be scary, the truth is that laughing is the only language I spoke during the courses. My experience at Hoopla was just wonderful and extremely funny! Moreover, people at Hoopla are kind and help out for unexpected changes to your schedule.
J. T.
Wow, Hoopla is great for both the shows it puts on and the courses it runs! Incredibly talented performers, and really friendly, inspiring teachers! The courses are really safe and inclusive, and I can't believe how fun they are. I would definitely recommend Hoopla to anyone!

Incredible addition to my experience living here in London. I took Steve's beginner course this summer and looked forward to it wholeheartedly each week. Steve is an engaging, welcoming, talented instructor whose course draws smart, fun, positive people in, all looking to build new skills and learn something new. Found his beginner improv class to be the most wonderful way to add color, creativity, energy, entertainment, and even an awesome new network of people to my life here, as an expat on work visa. Unsurprisingly I've signed up for the next course in the curriculum :-)
S. P.
Just took Chris Mead’s Emotional Connection intensive course - such a wonderful week. Feeling equipped to dig deep, and inspired to go after genuine and meaningful emotional connections in scenes. Chris is an amazingly talented, generous and supportive teacher, and I felt so energised after each session. Loads of fun, and well worth doing! Highly recommended.
F. M.
I've taken several classes from Hoopla and the teachers have consistently been excellent. Sign up! It's the most fun you can have as an adult without being medicated. They work hard to create a safe, supportive environment.
R.
Great teaching, a really wide-ranging and immersive introduction to improv, and totally inclusive - our class was a really mixed bunch, coming from a wide range of backgrounds, and doing improv for a host of different reasons.
The majority of us have decided to continue onto the next level. Highly recommended for both performers just the intrigued / interested alike!
K. D.
Thoroughly enjoyed the beginners impro course at Hoopla. Super fun sessions and a lovely group led by Allison over 8 weeks. Could not have asked for a more welcoming experience. Highly recommend and look forward to continuing.
C. H.
I had a fantastic time on the Beginner's improv course with Maria Peters. What a refreshing way to spend a day a week with some other funny, unassuming and talented people. Maria was kind, a great teacher and a fantastic sense of humour. Would recommend to anyone.
M. O.
Great beginners' improv course with an excellent teacher. Open and friendly, and loads of fun - laughed more in a single evening than I usually do in a week! The course goes slowly through the basic principles of improv, mostly through games and short scenes, though not covering any longform techniques. A good basis to go on and take further courses. Definitely recommended!
T. A.
So impressed with how Hoopla has been operating and their pivot online during the pandemic. Always asking members about new processes, super inclusive and frankly been a life saver for me. We rely heavily on artists, writers, comedians during these times so can’t recommend Hoopla enough to anyone looking for some light and fun.
R. C.
I took part in the most recent Performance Improv course, led by Andrew Gentilli. It was a sincerely brilliant 8 week course. Andrew was beyond fantastic. He created a space in which everybody immediately felt as comfortable as they possibly could when learning improv. He is funny, genuinely lovely and clearly very skilled at his craft - you trust what he says. Each week he reaffirmed past lessons and added something new into the mix. The course felt incredibly fun and lighthearted but at the same time very considered and thought through.
The Theatre Delicatessen was a great location - a creative and comfortable space.
I would strongly recommend this course to anyone looking to develop their improv skills or even just looking for a creative outlet to spice things up!
C. M. C.
Excellent course. James had a brilliant sense of fun and found him to be an excellent teacher. Really well organised
E. s.
My friends and colleagues are getting bored of me waxing lyrical about how great the course was.
Liam did an incredible job of removing our inhibitions and getting us pumped up to have fun. I’ve never felt as comfortable acting like an idiot. I looked forward to it every week and have gone onto do another one with Hoopla.
C. S.
Fantastic place, great people, great night out. Hoopla’s improv classes are class too!
C. S.
Just attended the Emotional Connections Intensive with Chris Mead - cannot recommend highly enough! Chris is a superb teacher - encouraging, perceptive, great fun and fuelled by an infectious passion for improv based on true connections. The results were astonishing. I'll be back.
R. R.
Really enjoyed the Level 1 Improv course via zoom! It's made lockdown so much more fun with a great tutor and meet brilliant new people too!
L. R.
Hoopla has been a lifesaver in developing all aspects of my acting career. I have found all the improv courses very versatile, innovative and challenging in the most liberating way. I have had the privilege of being taught by Maria Peters and Andrew Gentilli who are amazing and inspiring performers in their own right as well as fantastic teachers. Steve Roe has a fantastic creative organisation that I hope continues to train and liberate all performers. Steve has always promptly responded to all my email questions on the available courses and suitability for developing certain skills.

Hoopla has been my sanctuary for the last 10 years since it was once a week in a small room above The Bedford pub in Balham with 20-40 regular people. Consistently aims for a fun time for everyone by booking high quality acts, as well as encouraging new improvisers. There’s a reason it now has 100s of audience every week and runs multiple classes every day.
Hoopla at The Miller is my absolute favourite place to perform. Getting on that stage always feels like coming home. The perfect size for connective comedy and best improv venue in London by a long shot.
S. M.
We did the level two performance course, and it was Awesome! Great supportive atmosphere, and Jonah is a terrific teacher. Couldn't recommend highly enough.
D. E.
Improv does not find a better home, than at Hoopla in London. There is a huge positive energy when you enter the space. When I was there it was standing room only and everyone had a great time. I can't wait to visit again! It's a must visit for tourists, and it's a wonderful organization to support for locals.
C. W.
Done many courses with Hoopla and they are the BEST. Most welcoming community I've been a part of and the shows are just side-splittingly good. Love what Steve's created here and so so pleased to be a part of the Hoopla following!
G.
I loved the course and the chance to play with my new friends each week. They say "when one door closes, another door opens". The Government closed my front door a couple of months ago. Then Hoopla opened this one for me.
M. G. (. C.
I loved attending Amy Cooke Hodgson's level 3 Scenes course. As usual I've gained enormous value and developed both improv and personal skills. I enjoyed her side coaching, feedback rich sessions and follow up emails with lessons learned from the previous class. I look forward to more. Thank you.
b. s.
Hoopla Improv Marathon is a unique experience. A chance to meet so many generous and entertaining people. As well as being a lot of fun, it is a safe place being sensitive to issues of race, class, gender, and disability. Come along to the Miller!
S. H.
It was an absolute pleasure from start to finish! James was just the loveliest person and was a great facilitator. He read the room and the people really well. Was a great bunch of people, so lovely to be in a space where there was no pressure to be funny or perform, everyone was supportive and positive. Sounds a bit wanky but it was properly life affirming! it should be on the NHS.
a.
I liked the Improv for beginners it was really useful despite being non-local and non-native English-speaker, I felt good place to learn the basics of acting who has any idea and clue, Many thanks to James Witt who was our coach. Well and thanks a lot!
M. C.
I loved the two courses I did with Hoopla - beginner and performance, both taught by James Witt, who is incredible at creating a safe and fun atmosphere to work in. If you're wondering whether you should sign up to a course: DO IT!! Thanks Hoopla!
S. M.
I've had a fab time doing Level 1 and 2 with Jonah - he's the best! I've learned loads and laughed loads. Jonah really knows impro and always encouraging, helping to cement a great group vibe. Love you gang. Level 2 show was the biggest buzz, I'll def. keep going.
S. R.
The Advanced Improv Sci-fi course has been superb.
Katy Schutte (our guru) is without doubt one of the best improv teachers I’ve had the privilege to work with, and there have been a few, inc. Anthony Atamanuik.
Why you might ask? Well, Katy is just about the most positive, enthusiastic teacher, with insightful notes, a collaborative mindset (she shares so many improv tools), and is so very giving of herself. You can tell that Katy loves improv and wants that for the rest of us.
Something that marked this group out is that unlike many other course I’ve done where you normally get some, we’ve had no drop-outs.
The team / group has been legendary.
This course has blown by, and I shall be sorry to see it finished with our show tonight.
C. R.
I’ve met so many new amazing people since taking classes with Hoopla this year, it feels like I’ve known them for years. It’s great to be able to make friends as an adult with other nerds who share your same interests. I feel like I’m part of a community.
P. T.
A brilliant eight weeks. I was so upset when the course was over. James created a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere in which we all flourished. I cannot recommend it enough. I'm hoping to do another course later in the year. Go on, be brave and go for it!

Hoopla is brilliant. I did a fantastic course here with Steve, and am a regular audience member for the shows. I've seen some top names and some total newcomers and always have a great time. Highly recommended.
L. P.
Jonah’s Level 1 improv class is so tremendously silly it should come with a warning: highly addictive, you’ll be in fits of laugher at every moment, the following day you will feel like a brand new baby human. Blew my expectations - signed up for level 2
K. N.
Did the level one course and absolutely loved it. The atmosphere in class felt safe and forgiving, made it easy to learn and have fun without feeling anxious about making mistakes or looking silly. Highly recommend!
L. B.
this class was amazing! Definitely the best improv I've ever been to, fantastic facilitators, and participants. Most fun I've had in ages.
S. G.
I just wanted to say, I've really enjoyed getting into Improv. I don't think its obvious to others, but when I first started last summer I was suffering with quite a lack of confidence. I found that by coming each week and not over thinking things, I could throw myself into whatever we were doing. In turn, I slowly found my confidence coming back. In fact my folks said that to me the other day that they thinks I'm getting back to my old self.
I have found that's been really cemented over the last few weeks. I find sometimes in life I get a bit over focussed on what everyone else is thinking or doing; and in turn am my harshest critic. In class, I just sit back and laugh at what's going on and my active listening skills have definitely improved. So thanks for that.
I accidentally ended up on stage again last night (just dancing), but I'm really looking forward to our show (I keep telling myself it will all be fine).
T. S.
Brilliantly led with such care, precision, thoughtfulness, lightness-of-touch, kindness, expertise and encouragement. So much fun.
I genuinely think this can't be improved on. The teacher (Conor) is a gentleman and a scholar!
N. C.
Every time I’m in London I always make sure to get to see some shows at Hoopla everytime. Located above The Miller, Hoopla offered excellent variety and standard in UK and international acts. It can get busy at weekends so advance booking is often recommended. Solid comedy and entertainment.
C.
I’ve done Beginners and Level 2 for performance both of which were incredible! Highly recommend going to the venue to see improv performed and sneak previews of WIP. Great community, friendly atmosphere.
J. B.
An amazing place to learn improv. I love the energy and enthusiasm of the groups, the obvious experience and wisdom of the teachers and the regular opportunities to learn more or drop in and jam. Highly highly recommended!
S. M.
Really fun environment and great shows! Always have a good time at Hoopla and love the sense of community. Definitely the beating heart of London improv!
S. B.
One of London's dedicate improv comedy venues. Small but cosy venue with the Miller pub below. Hoopla do excellent improv courses that will get you to do things you'd never imagine and to have some of the greatest fun you will have.
C. P.
Took online intro course with Liam. Lots of fun. Learned interesting techniques and played some great improv games. Well worthwhile
E. P.
I can always count on having a fantastic evening at the Miller. They have a great variety of comedy acts, focused on improvisation. The crowd is always energised and everyone has a great time!

Great company, I really enjoyed my beginners improv course and had a great teacher called Jonah. I highly recommend it for anyone, Its a lot of fun.

I’ve only been there to meet friends, so I don’t know about the comedy stuff.
The beer selection is amazing, cocktails are good, maybe a bit overpriced, but the experience is worth it. The food is great too, staff is very nice!
My favorite place to go during the summertime
A. M.
I feel know I can give the feedback about the course and james. I wanted to thank you all for the wonderful challenging, growing yet fun experience. As a facilitator, as a coach and an ex-executive, I feel that James helped me trust and reconnect with my playfulness to better serve myself and others. I learned a new way to bring into my work in innovation and personal development that allows individuals to witness and change patterns and habit in a non-judging way. I learned to laugh at my self andthat big for me and that’s thank to the group I went through the course with and more importantly James. James has the capacity to connect, create bonds and make you feel one of. Him saying to me “I believe in you” while struggling in the rim activity, helped me unlock an assumption and an association I had with that game that haunted me for a long time (Appoligies that the psychotherapist in me that has to entangle)
M. M.
Learnt a massive amount about interacting with and listening to the audience which is helping me to perform better as an actor. Met a group of really lovely people. A great way to wind down on a Thursday evening. Had so much fun.

The stand up course is such a positive experience that this time last year I would never have thought I could do. I would urge anyone thinking about it to just go ahead and do it. 15 of us on the course and every single one of us loved it.
