Reviews of Northern Stage
S. W.
I've been here lots over the years. It's such a welcoming and intimate venue.
Most recent show seen was "Snatched" (Melissa Johns) on a balmy solstice night (21/06/22). It was at once incredibly moving and emotionally raw in parts, but really funny too. There was a friendly Q&A after the show in the bistro too.
Northern Stage is perfect for this kind of devised theatre.
I always have a great time here. 🙂
P. S.
Nice theatre in the heart of Newcastle. Has various shows, and a cafe (but not serving food yet). Went to see my daughter's school production, and of course it was brilliant, and my daughter was the brightest star (though I'm bias). The venue is nice, there is plenty of parking around, though none dedicated for the venue. Can't really fault it as a venue, so with a good show, it's 5stars 👍🏽
W. P.
Friendly staff in booking office, very helpful in helping to find best cheapest seats. Venue bar is excellent for pre show drinks.
G. D.
Went to see "The Invisble Man". First trip back to the theatre since Covid hit. Had the best night!
V. B.
Always a lovely venue, we were comfortable with the seating arrangements and mask wearing as per the renewed restrictions.
The Sorcerer's apprentice was one of the best Christmas shows off the last few years, from 78 to 9 years old thoroughly enjoyed it!
D. E.
Very good. The four performances were well put together. The team looked after the guests really well. The area was too warm though.
g. w. E.
Have been to several presentations here and never been disappointed usually a meal is available at the restaurant but this time only coffee and cake COVID safe in that face coverings are requested
L. T.
I love this bookshop. The staff are excellent and are great for reccomenations. It may be small but it carries a great selection of books.
A. D.
Friendly staff, clean venue, excellent performance at a great price. Love this venue x
J. A.
Saw a very good show. However a lot of steps especially if you need to go to the loo
A. H.
Came to see the Suggestibles Improv Pantso - excellent show! The staff behind the bar and stationed around worked very hard to ensure Covid regulations were being followed where possible, and they were friendly and helpful when we chatted to them. Even though we had to wait a little longer for drinks and watch the show with masks on, it made everyone feel safer and hopefully helped them enjoy the experience.
C. M.
Welcoming, clean, warm and value for money. A great night out for every age. We saw the sorcerer's apprentice. Very entertaining. A definite recommendation for any time of the year but more so at Xmas time.
V.
Great live theatre at an excellent venue. This place is good for a daytime or evening get together. Go and get your theatre fix!!!
M. H.
Excellent venue - great selection of acts and entertainment. Staff great, sound system first class. Always feel part of the show here
S. P.
Great place to see local theatre. Shame about the drinks prices in the bar!!
M. W.
Great place and shows with bar and box office situated inside.
H. D.
Great show, helpful and smiling staff.
A. C.
Incredibly friendly, helpful staff, and a great venue!
A. D.
Lovely theatre. We had great seats. My first visit to Newcastle and watched a very emotional play.
A. S.
Such a great place....
S. Y.
Great theatre, very comfortable and reasonably priced
N. E. S.
It is centrally located to Newcastle University. A nice place to grab a cuppa
A. H.
Amazing theatre and show. Quite tricky to find as I couldn't see any sign posts ... ended up entering through a door that wasn't the main entrance with the help of the kind staff x
B. T. B. K.
Went to see a pantomime and the cast were great at warming up the audience and getting the children and adults to join in. My grandchildren loved it.
S. V.
Great venue, friendly staff.
E. G.
Northern Stage Theatre in Newcastle is a wonderfull place to be right now. Entertainment garranteed. Various excellent plays on show... A must-see ROAD directed by Natalie Ibu is a play not be missed. Hurrah for theatre!!
A. R.
One of the best Museums in the North East!
E. w.
A very intimate setting with great views and acoustics , food and drink available a very pleasant place to come and relax or watch a performance
R. B.
Saw Red Ellen. Good show at a good theatre
j. b.
Saw Rainman here on Wednesday and it was a great performance. Theatre is a bit minimalist and very dark ( literally everything seems to be black!) but comfy. Seats really need to be better numbered as we had problems working out which seat was ours and then had to help others - "we're 21 and 22 so your seats must be 5 along" Also be aware it's 1 long line of seats so if you're in the middle get there early to avoid disturbing lots of people! Cafe and bar were nice too. Will definitely visit again
D. B.
Great venue for live theatre and stand up comedy or even just to pop in for coffee or a meal.
The prices are good, staff are friendly and helpful, and productions look and sound very good - the technicians clearly know what they are doing.
It is a fairly modern building so is a very accessible and the view from the back of the venue (where the wheelchairs bays are) is very good because there aren't any pillars or obstructions to your view of the stage.
G. D.
I had a coffee in the bar area as I was waiting to pick up a colleague. The staff were friendly and helpful.
I needed to charge my phone and was shown where the nearest socket was so I could charge the phone and drink my coffee.
Very nice and relaxing place to visit.
I had never been there until today and will definitely be visiting regularly in the future.
C. M.
Went to see A Thousand Splendid Suns at Northern Stage last night play was emotional, and very well acted felt drained when we left certainly makes you more aware of what Afghan women had, and still do, endure it's so traumatic...First time at this venue and I was very impressed. Friendly helpful staff, cafe looked good, although we didn't have time to partake! Definitely be back hopefully have some food next time!
F. L.
Friendly and very helpful staff. Relaxed atmosphere, so no pressure to feel a bit dressed down like in some venues. Only thing is that the waiting area is also the restaurant, which could feel a little awkward if you're not consuming any food/beverages, especially when you're waiting to get into the theatres.
L. S.
Went to see Wonderful Mr Ripley, the actors were really good and the horiografy of the sex scene was the highlight for me. The seats were really comfy and the bar excellent. My two friends were late for the show and I had the tickets, it was no bother to leave the tickets with reception for them.
J. A.
Nice local theatre on which you can sit either side of the stage and still have a great view. The snow Queen was a good performance, perfect to see just before Christmas. Looking forward to what they put on next season.
A. R.
The Sorcer's aApprentice was brilliant and the grandchildren sat enraptured as well as joining in.
O. D.
First visit to this venue to see The Rock Choir. Nicely designed building, there is a bar/ cafe area and open outside space. Friendly staff. Seats had quite good leg room. On the downside it was a hot day and there didn't appear to be any air- con .... which was uncomfortable for the audience and more so for the performers. Lots of advertising for forth coming events and productions , something to suit most tastes.
D. C.
We had dinner in the restaurant upstairs before the show which we opted for spicy lamb on flatbed which was delicious. We then saw ,.'the lovely bones which was superb too. All in all a good night. The theatre itself though is a little tired.
J. O.
Always enjoy going to Northern Stage such a good atmosphere - enjoyed a drink and some olives before seeing Lovely Bones. I've read the book which was very good. I've seen the film which I was disappointed in and now I've seen it on stage - it's a hard one to translate to film/stage and if you haven't read the book could be a little confusing at times but a really good effort.
C. B.
Cafe good for a quick drink and snack.
N. B.
Visited twice now; final performance of The Last Ship, which was brilliant, and previously Get Carter, which was also very good.
Great little modern theatre, both performances we saw had excellent stage settings and the seating (views) are spot on.
J. E.
Took my boys to see A Christmas Carol. Superb show tonight. Well done to all. You never cease to provide wonderful entertainment. And lovely to have a card on my seat, to wish us a Christmas welcome, being members The Northern Stage. Thank you to everyone.
I. M. G.
Coffee was luke warm
Pastry delicious
P. C.
It's been a long time since the time o have been there and the entrance has been moved to the side and it's actually on the University premises. The foyer has tables and plenty of room for a quick snack and drink. The main stage can accommodate a quite sizeable audience. I have watched "Wonderland" a play about the miners in the north east. I really enjoyed and the theater has a lot of good productions. During the breaks the traditional ice cream is offered as well as complimentary water. Lots of good shoes coming up. Make sure you check the website 😉
A. B.
Saw The Invisible man. Would recommend.
S. T.
Snow Queen. Dec 2019. A fantastic performance and an amazing set. If you want a child friendly winter show and are sick of pantomimes then I would totally recommend this show.
M. B.
Me and my husband and two friends were there yesterday may 13th to see east is east.have to say the performance was great.loved the theatre and the staff were brilliant especially when it came to helping my friend who has a disability. They escorted us to the lift and to our seats.we will certainly come back.maria Boyd
J. D.
Brilliant production of the last ship but staff were appalling. One of our party needed a ticket. She had the opportunity to buy a £10 child's ticket but was told by box office that she would have to pay a £50 upgrade to northern stage box office. Face value of ticket when on public sale? £35. Disgusted
L.
We've seen a few shows aimed at small children at the Northern Stage and have always enjoyed them. Would also recommend the monthly storytelling sessions on a Saturday morning.
K. T.
I have not had a meal at Northern Stage so cannot comment on that, but I did see Julie a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was brilliant. I felt a bit like a fly on the wall watching human frailties exposed, and even more part of the scene when I got a minor soaking from the anger on the stage platform. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
T. Y.
The theatre is lovely, excellent plays, and the staff are fantastic, helped us a lot with purchasing the tickets and get the most of our gift cards, the restaurant serves very high quality tasty food...
m. p.
Cheaper theatre that does a huge variety of plays and pantomime. Some tiny theatre rooms and some large rooms. Shows to accommodate very young children to adult ages. Worth a visit.
J. P.
We visit McKennas cafe bar regularly and its a nice space in which to chill out, have a drink and something to eat. The food, especially the tapas is excellent, though when taking in a show we make sure to get there early - because the food is cooked to order it can take a bit longer to get through three courses than some other restaurants that might be doing pizzas or fast food.
B. L.
I like the food here, and you can order tapas or full sized meals, or just drinks, so it's a flexible place to pop into after work and see how the evening goes. The waiting staff are fine but it's hard to flag one down one you've got your food, and it can take a while to arrive. The building is quite brutalist and draughty, but they are cool about e.g. moving the tables to accommodate your size of group.
E. W.
Always an excellent experience.
c. d.
Loved it great experience definitely go again and worth it
J. M. F.
I guess it's about the play! A thousand splendid suns was stupendous. Staff very lovely and I hear the food is good but didn't have. Great theatre space
A. G.
Really good. I will be back. Seats ate not the best if you are sat for 2 hours.
The complimentary water during the intermission was appreciated
S. “. E.
Another fantastic production from.Northern Stage! Great atmosphere, fabulous venue and wonderfully talented creative cast and crew for A Christmas Carol! Made our Christmas!
R. L.
One of the best plays I've seen for quite a few year's, the cast played there roles to perfection and the set was out of this world, a first class play in a first class theatre from 4 ex Durham miners ✊✊✊
c. b.
Great place for a beer or coffee and cake. Good views of stage from any seat. A good selection of shows for all age groups
E. B.
Went to see A Thousand Splendid Suns which was excellent. It is a good small friendly theatre I especially like to take my grandchildren there when they have children's shows on
S. S.
Amazing. Great shows. Worth the money. Very cheap for the amazing shows you get to watch. Have performed and watched performances there. GO ALONG IF YOU CAN
N. S.
Nice venue in the heart of Newcastle at the university. Saw the Young'uns performing the Ballad of Johnny Longstaff, great sound, great visuals.
J. M.
Saw 'bouncers' which was very entertaining. Spacious and well kept bar
g. b. (.
Great atmosphere, lovely lighting and great people. The cafe has a really nice feel to it and it was a really nice place to just sit and chill out.
D. &. M. G.
Disabled access, nice seating/eating/bar area in foyer. Friendly helpful staff. Main auditorium with comfortable seats and good raking
G. C.
An excellent and innovative production of A Christmas Carol full of energy, drive and humour, where appropriate.
The performance was "in the round" which drew the audience into the show.
Uplifting.
P. S.
Went to see Rain Man last night. Brilliant production which made me laugh and cry. Hats off to the wonderful cast- particularly the brothers.
S. W.
Good beers and a large, well situated venue. A little on the expensive side, but really good for a few drinks after work or before a show.
E. C.
Lovely venue with comfortable seating and plenty space. Great range of shows, helpful friendly staff with a very friendly casual atmosphere.
J. C.
Had some good food here, several veggie options and friendly staff, child friendly with lots of space for pushchairs, bags, coats etc.
M. C.
Not somewhere I have been often but when I went it was a great show. Theres some great staff work there and it's a nice bar area and building.
S. G.
Bright, attractive, 3 stages, great bar with excellent range of drinks and food. Lovely staff and engaging theatre.

S. H.
Went to stage 2, small theatre, biggest issue was very narrow seats, and a shortage of toilets at interval time. Otherwise great.
k. l.
It may not be a 'classical' theatre in terms of its build but that doesn't matter when it consistently puts on excellent productions at very reasonable prices.
L. C.
Great show for under 5s. Kept our toddler entertained for the full 45 mins.
W. S.
Two minutes from the bus station. Great view from any of the seats. Very good cafe and bar.
