Very nice restaurant. Food was amazing, service amazing. Waitress recommended beef with mushrooms as main dish, my husband doesn’t like mushrooms but decided to try. And it was 10/10 we enjoyed it. Definitely come back again.

It's always a pleasure to dine in Shanghai 1814 Restaurant whenever we are in Southampton. It is a Chinese restaurant serving traditional and authentic Chinese dishes. My favourites are their sizzling scallops platter and char siu. The ambience is really intimate and private. The staffs are also very accommodating and helpful, making sure their guests are comfortable and satisfied. Plus they have the best toilet in town! 😊 Tip: you need to book before you dine in. You can do it online or via phone call. They're open for lunch from 12pm to 3pm and again for dinner starting at 5pm.

Spectacular! 100% will return soon! The staff was extremely attentive and friendly. Our waiter Will in particular left us with a very positive impression, with his recommendations on the menu. The restaurant still takes covid precautions, which we really appreciated. Masks, temperature check, and sanitizer all were in hand. The ambience is just incredible, extreme attention to detail. It was a very relaxing atmosphere and immersive experience. Last but not least, the food was divine: we had the pork dumplings, the vegetarian spring rolls, the kung-po chicken and sizzling beef, with jasmine rice and egg fried rice. Cannot fault any of the above, but the mains in particular were extraordinary.

They provide a wide selection of dishes, making it difficult to decide what to get because almost everything on the menu seems nice. The cognac was superb. It actually appeals to me a lot. Amazing decor and amazing food! The tempura prawns in particular were spectacular. A crispy, light batter with a very "meaty" prawn to boot! The beef sizzler plate coupled with garlic tenderstem broccoli and egg fried rice was my choice, and it did not disappoint! My wife had the same but with th chicken sizzler plate. I definitely preferred the beef. One note is that we did feel a little rushed in there, but the silver lining was service was fast and efficient. Not rude but maybe not the friendliest either. I would 100% recommend going and will be back myself.

Back a 3rd time for an early Sunday dinner. Busy but great buzz and excellent service. We had the signature Peking duck, Sizzling scallops and spicy Griddled Green Beans with minced beef (tip: ask for the Chinese/Sichuan menu vs the English). My wife and I found ourselves on a mini staycation in Southampton last month. As we are a couple of real foodies. Eating out experiences factor heavily on leisure time. I did a certain amount of research before our trip, so had an idea of where we may like to go. This restaurant not only looked good. But came with some impressive reviews. We decided to book a table for dinner. This was a midweek reservation. I booked us online, and was immediately hit by the need to input credit card details in order to be charged if you are a no show. Now, to clarify, this does not mean you cannot cancel, just can’t not turn up. I personally have no issue with this. If anything it demonstrates that these people have respect for their own business. Our booking was for 1930hrs. We arrived outside an impressive looking Victorian era building. Not what you would expect of a Chinese restaurant. On entering through the big glass and brass double doors you feel that you have been transported to somewhere else. There is an impressive bar / lounge area. However due to Covid restrictions at the time, this couldn’t be used. The restaurant makes ample use of dark colours, subtle lighting and lots of cherry blossom to set the stage for the meal. We were soon shown to our table by a very polite waiter who gave us menus, and took an order for drinks. Drink service was pretty quick. I had a beer, and my wife a Drunken Concubine cocktail, this proved to be an interesting infusion of Lychee Liqueur, and Prosecco. She liked it so much she had a second go. After a perusal of the menu, and timely discussion. We were able to order. Starters, Dim Sum Platter for me, Vegetarian Dim Sum Platter for her, and we also shared some Pan Fried Pork Dumplings. All of these dishes were very well presented, and looked authentic. The Dim Sum was hot, and moist, a good mix of flavours. The Dumplings were my favourite. Good amount of filling, and although pan fried were tender, and juicy. We asked for a twenty minute break before moving on to our main course. Given the break we took the opportunity to order a bottle of red wine. My wife ordered a bottle of Portillo Malbec. Although not a standard accompaniment to Chinese food, it was a lovely full bodied wine, and at a fair price. Our main course arrived. Roasted Duck with Black Truffle Sauce. An incredible dish of sliced meat off the bone, crispy duck skin with succulent perfectly cooked meat underneath. The sauce was light but with a surprising depth of flavour due to the truffle. Our second dish was Slow Cook Pork Belly in Cognac sauce. The pork was sliced, and cooked to be melt in the mouth tender, a few heads of baby Pak Choy swimming in a medium thickness cognac sauce, this imparted all the flavour enhancing qualities of cognac without tasting boozy. A colourful, and tasty accompaniment side dish of Stir fry Mixed vegetables, and Egg Fried Rice rounded out the meal. All round presentation was stunning and everything looked so appetizing. Colours, and flavours complimenting, and bouncing off each other. Service was quick, polite, and efficient. Our waiter was never far away if we required anything but didn’t make his presence felt in an intrusive way. Table was comfortable. Tableware was spotlessly clean, as were the glasses. The ambiance was amazing. Even sitting in an open part of the restaurant it felt private, and intimate. Toilets were also very clean, and not taken as an afterthought. Thank you to all the staff for a memorable night out. We are already booked for our next visit. Our daughters birthday in November. See you then.

A very modern & beautiful restaurant serves traditional Chinese food. It’s a long way for us to visit this highly recommended restaurant by friends, we were very impressed, had yummy food & a wonderful experience. The most importantly, the bill was economic for such a delightful evening. They took Covid prevention very seriously, the place was exceptionally clean, staff wore masks, reasonable social distancing, gave us peace of mind. Have to praise the staff, very helpful, polite and friendly, also dressed very smart.

What I think of 1814 restaurant. The set out with VIP rooms is perfect. The set out is very good. Very clean place. Toliets spotless. They accompanied 13 of us under short notice. The service needs some work and so does the food. Seems it was cooked for Chinese people and not catered for UK taste. Many things to choose from just bland sorry to say. Shame really as had a wonderful experience with my friends and family. Some things are a little pricy as well in my opinion! Sorry no photos as took videos I will visit again to see improvements. Very Good quality of food. Very dark though... You don't really see what you eat 😋 First time was served veggie duck!! To be honest did not eat it, was part of a fixed menu. But so pricey without any particular reason! Do not choose menus. I am not sure how a menu for 2 about 38-40 pounds for 2 people, ended up paying 52 per person without even a cocktail!! ( 1 beer and 1 Coke for me) I may have missed something, we were a big group of hungry people after work..I left still hungry though as was not eating some from the fixed menus . Even what I tried was really tasty and proper asian food, did not worth the money. I ll give it one more visit without the fixed menu and I ll be back here to tell you for sure!!!

We have a great dim sum here. Good price, good service from staffs and the staffs are very attentive from and gorgeous decoration. Seats are very comfortable too. Overall, food is very nice, good quality of dim sum. However, if the Peking duck, we would expect the skin to be seperated with meat on the pancake. Most of the skin that served with the pancake are attached with some meat.

Stunning place... we were tempted in by the beautiful building, lit up from the outside and chandeliers shining on the inside it was irresistible. Inside didn't disappoint, everything was so opulent. We had our dinner just after lock-down and to be honest it is much more intimate now the way they have divided up the tables. It is lovely how ypu have ypur own private booth. They save space so the servers can get in the booth without invading your space. The food is eye appealing and lovely. That was the best roast duck I've ever had, and the seaweed was lovely and crisp. The whole staff do everything to make your experience as perfect as possible, from the man on the door taking your temperature, to the guys clearing your table. You jusy have to ask and they will get for you. The price is perfect as well, reasonable for a luxury night out. Well worth the visit, and I highly recommend this place to anyone.

We've always travelled for dim sum but they stopped it recently. We decided to go for dinner there and it is one of the best Chinese restaurants I've ever been (I'm Chinese). Service is excellent, polite and friendly staff. Atmosphere is great, I love the evening vibe, children friendly although I'd leave the kids at home next time. Food is freshly cooked and delicious. Great recommendations and authentic dishes. Worth the travel from Reading! Shame they've stopped the dim sum menu though.

Heard alot of possible and not so possible news about thus restaurant, so decided to try it out, The staff was very polite and friendly, the decor is very dark !! Though very relaxing at the same time The menu is OK!! Though isn't the best menu that I have been offered at other restaurants We placed our drinks and meals at the same time, and the drinks was served straight away ( well done ) As for the mains !! Sadly this is where it goes wrong!! As my other half got her sides and main served at the same time, as I only have my sides served!!! And after 10mins or so had to ask where my main dish was ??? The over all cost is a little higher than one might expect!! The food was well cooked, though the service/kitchen was a let down!! So over all I will give it a 7 out of 10,

Honestly an amazing meal in a restaurant fit for any major city in the world. With my wife, we have recently been to this restaurant in Southampton. The food is always very good. The service on our previous visit (August 2021) was really disturbing. The waiter was very kind but the attitude of the very manager was extremely rude and disrespectful. We ordered two drinks but when the bill came it ws written we ordered four drinks. We asked for a correction to the manager but she did not believe us and insisted she saw four glasses on our table and thereby we were lying! We indeed did not let the things like this and she asked us to wait 10mn for checking on CCTV. After verifying that in fact we were charged the wrong amount, the manager did not even apologise to us and rather blamed strongly the waiter. Experience was average and we were disappointed by the rude attitude of the manager towards costumers.

Ok, right at the outset allow me to congratulate Shanghai 1814 on the refurbishment at the premises that had taken place since my previous visit. They still have a huge chandelier hanging from the ceiling, but have also Incorporated fake blossom trees which appear to grow up the wall and the branches expand out across the ceiling and the Blossom on the branches appears to be a pastel pink due to the lighting. Anyway we have visited the establishment twice over the past 3-weeks, how first visit was to celebrate our 40 first wedding anniversary , and a second was it was to take friends out a treat them to a nice meal. It's difficult to be able to criticise them on any level, although the food is a little expensive I'm a Believer that you do get what you pay for. However please be aware that they will most likely add a 10% surcharge to your bill even if there is only two people dining.

The menu is extremely extensive and the staff cannot do enough for you, they are so attentive - especially Cally, who was absolutely lovely and made sure all our needs were met. Food was excellent in terms of both taste and presentation and we weren't waiting long at all for it to come out either. The building itself is stunning, not tacky and feels very special. Been here twice now both for special events birthday and anniversary, on both occasions the staff are kind and friendly but the service is rubbish as it's so slow, I ordered a round of four drinks while waiting for the table several minutes later still waiting for the drinks, they said table ready and showed us to it, after another 10 minutes still no drinks, complained and they brought three of them, the forth a G& T took another 15 minute's, so over 30 minutes for a drink. Food was the same ordered the £42 pp menu first two courses came ok but the mains which was made up of six desperate dishes cane out sporadically and the last one after we had finished eating, then to cap it all asked for the bill and was charged a £28service charge albeit voluntary they never told me that just charged me so in all won't be returning shame because great venue and good food when you get it.

Drink orders arrive but not what was ordered... Really silly mistakes without any real apology. The real surprise was the cheesecake that was ordered, arrived as frozen. We complained and was told that it was an ice-cream cheesecake. Time proved that was a lie as it was too hard to eat, and didn't melt over time... A blatant lie from the woman at Front of House, and no refund when pulled up on it. They get 3 stars because of the great food, and would be 5 stars if the staff improved their service. This review is after several visits since they opened, and we still visit knowing the service will be poor... Sadly.

Great chinese restaurant at the center of Southampton. We visited it with a Chinese friend and it was a really nice, authentic experience. Most dishes are from the Cantonese-Chinese region and they are so tasty. I would recommend the Cantonese-style duck, shrimp-dumplings, traditional Chinese tea and I would also suggest that you ask for the Chinese menu, you will find a few extra traditional dishes there. The only disappointment was the Chinese desserts, especially the fruit cake. The service was excellent and the decor lovely.

They used to be very good pre covid but what i am really disappointed about when i revisit when the lockdown was uplifted was the following: 1) Hike in price and in some cases more than 50%. You will find the most expensive bowl of rice charged in Southampton compared to any asian restaurant and their portion isn't justifiable 2) The quality of food whilst still authentic, have definitely dropped a little. Either due to freshness of ingredients or change of cooks. I felt the need to express this given their new price increase strategy which is not justifiable and for the price you're paying, there are much more worthy asian/chinese restaurants around. This place is now for crazy rich asians only.

Very attractive paintings round the wall especially those Chinese ones upstairs plus the cherry blossoms tree laid behind the entrance brighten up the atmosphere. The large fish tank with many colourful gold fishes offer tranquility at one glance. Menu with delicious Cantonese and Northern China's cuisine delight diners with interesting choice of dishes. Simply yummy! Staff work hard to serve. Value for money!

Decent Chinese restaurant if you order of the Chinese menu rather than the western one. Did can however tend to lean a little heavily on the deep fried side of things. There is also a secret karaoke bar upstairs which is good fun and not overly expensive. Expect a lot of Mandarin bootlegs of songs and poor user interface though.

My first visit here was with two friends, one of whom is Chinese and thus an excellent judge of the authenticity. First impression: big wow for the building, really lovely and well-decorated. Maybe a little too much bling to my liking, but the Chinese love that kind of thing. When we walked in we were friendly greeted and seated. What struck me most is that this restaurant has a lot more diverse crowd than usual Chinese places (i.e. more Westerners). We, and by "we" I mainly mean my Chinese mate, were thus wondering whether the food would still be authentic. The restaurant provides Cantonese (red menu?) as well as Sichuan style dishes. We went for Sichuan (the black menu). My friend helped us make choices on the best food, and the staff was able to accommodate our western, less spicy, taste where needed. The food was excellently portioned and very tasty. I have been told it is authentic too. It is our new favorite Chinese place in town. The waiting staff was friendly and helpful. Also, apparently there is a karaoke upstairs but I have yet to try it! Excellent place overall, I would recommend it.

Enjoyed some very tasty Sichuanese cuisine. The menu is thorough but this is not uncommon at more, and I hate to use the word, authentic Chinese restaurants. Mapo tofu was a delight although the dan dan noodles used what I can only describe as a type of spaghetti rather than the Asian style. It’s hard to distinguish between the two sometimes but you could tell. Menu also caters for the western palate with your favourite take away dishes but I’d certainly suggest try something a little different.
