Reviews of National Trust - Sandscale Haws National Nature Reserve
R. B.
Amazing place to visit and take your dog for a walk down the smash beaches. The tide can come in quite quickly so if our exploring the sands just be aware, but lovely to sit on the sand banks and just relax. Does cost for parking but around £1 per hour so not to bad. Wellies I would recommend unless really warm
S. W.
A very quiet, picturesque beach with a vast expanse of wet sand beyond the initial stones and pebbles. A safe place for little ones to play when the tide is out as the main body of water is so far out, but there are little streams running through for them to paddle in. My little one enjoyed collecting shells and investigating all the stones.
The carpark was fairly full despite there being very few people in sight, and this appears to be because it's a good place to walk dogs so people quickly vanish into the distance.
K. S.
What a stunningly beautiful place. Fascinating to read the information about natterjack toads plus other wildlife & plant life that the National Trust are doing such great work to protect.
Worth visiting “out of hours” to avoid busy times in the car park~ but definitely worth visiting 🐸
I. P.
Another national trust treasure. Went an hour after high tide so had plenty of time to walk along the beach. Plenty of things to see as you walk along. Dogs loved the freshwater pool near the car park
M. K.
Beautiful at dusk yesterday (30/10/21) people walking dogs & some families about with children playing. What I noticed most is how clean it is, I didn't see one bit of litter!
For anyone who likes pebble hunting like me there were some beautiful pebbles all about some bigger rocks first as you descend and I was in my element! Got a few pretty little ones to take home as a momento (I don't take more than just a few each place I go) and also picked up some great chippings that I put in little bottles to make keepsakes.
A little gem of a beach & nice walks! Well worth a visit.
D. M.
Beautiful area of Barrow, so much flora and fauna, great for dog walking, great for families, a truly beautiful place and well worth a visit if you're from out of town
S. P.
Beautiful walk along the coast. Stopped to watch some guys windsurfing, then walked back looking at all the different flora. I even spotted a dragonfly among the reeds. A lovely place to introduce nature to children. 😊
C. R.
Lovely quiet place to have a nice relaxed walk especially if the tide is out. There is only a very small area that is accessible via wheelchair which means it would be a very short visit
S. B.
Lovely fairly quiet beach with lovely trails through the dunes. Part of the trails are boardwalks. Our grandchildren loved climbing up the dunes and sliding back down them. The tide was out leaving lots of rock pools. Plenty of opportunities to find shells and colourful pebbles. There is a small charge for the car park.
N. B.
Fantastic area to explore. There is a small carpark situated perfectly to park up and go exploring. There is a sand and pebble beach on the estuary along with dunes and then a big natural habitat to explore with a plethora of native wildflowers.
The area is used by a lot of dog walkers and I would love to take my two here exploring if I had them with me.
You have views of the mountains over the water and can pick out all the way to Scafell pike on a good day.
p. H.
Such a stunning beach highly recommended will definitely be visiting again and recommend
W. W.
Wonderful...really tiny car park though, I think only 16 cars. Lots of dunes, wide open spaces (great for pups!) Some stones but nearly all sand. There's a small cafe but this was closed when we visited - covid!
S.
Pleasant walk around the outside of the dunes. I was a little concerned that little appeared to be being done to protect the fragile dune ecosystem, either by tight controls of walkways or educational signage. The Little Hut was surprisingly well equipped for coffee and ice creams, including fir the dog....at reasonable price.
A. C.
So very quiet, a long walk on the beach on really warm day, sitting on the sand and watching the tide roll in. The carpark was quiet as well, with only limited space for cars.
L. H.
Great place for a long walk along the cost. The car park is quite small, so arrive early, and it's free for nat trust members. The walkways down to the cost are all wooden slats, so very easy to walk through the dunes from the car park.
P. W.
This place is beautiful. The water was clear and the sand dunes clean
P. D.
When the tide is out ,plenty of sand to walk the dog! National Trust car park, take coins (£2.50- I paid)or your membership-doesn't take card. Beautiful lake district views ,quiet and wildlife too.High point for me -got caught in a shower,-it was all mine.
A. S.
Walked for hours. There is sand, there is grass, it was an amazing experience.
D. R.
Grandson's first birthday. No better place near enough to Barrow-in-Furness to feel safe til late night sky watching. He liked it as well.
D. T.
Beautiful views and a lovely walk along the beach or the sand dunes. National Trust members can park for free at this well kept reserve. Great views of the Lake District mountains. Will be going again soon. Shame the car park isn't a little bigger as it does get very busy at times.
S. D.
Wonderful place for kids to explore, and for adults to enjoy the natural habitat. Lots of sand dunes and a sand / pebble beach. Great views over to Black Combe and Millom and up toward the main fells.
The tide goes out a long way, but there is a small natural lagoon by the car park for paddling. Car park is small, so best to go on weekdays. Charges are fair. Cash only though, unless a National Trust member, in which case it's free.
S. B.
Beautiful place, could stay forever. The weather was perfect when my partner and I visited. Absolute paradise 😍
C. S.
Lovely walk to do with the dogs. One place not littered with dog poop bags or do poop. If we all do our job and pick up and take home it makes these beautiful places keep beautiful. Dogs had a swim and enjoyed it.
P. U.
Super great beaches here. 🏖 Our children loved running around here. There is a lovely boardwalk here where you can see if you are lucky Natterjack Toads. We saw some spawn but not the toads them selves. It was still fun to look for them. Car parking is good here. 🚘 Would recommend a visit.
P. B.
Wow, follow the narrow winding lanes to the National Trust car park then walk straight out over the dunes to the epic beach giving stunning views over the estuary. Brisk, bracing walks to be enjoyed. Take something warm to wear and some wet weather gear but be ready for the sun to come out and dazzle off the sea and reveal the hills and mountains.
C. E.
Great place with fantastic views of Walney Island. Dog walkers paradise.
G. B.
Beautiful beach and sand dunes
J. R.
Great area of beauty & well worth a walk to see the views. But the roads getting here are very narrow-one vehicle only. Plus the car park is tiny. On a good note the ladys who work here prmoting the National trust were fab. They were warm & welcoming & had a great sence of humour. Would visit again.
D. g.
We wanted somewhere quiet for a short walk and to relax after arranging a funeral in Barrow, found this on Google search and was well worth the visit, few people ( probably due to the weather, and late afternoon and spectacular views across the water to the Lakeland peaks.
Only a small car park so on a nice day probably packed, visit when it's quiet
N. T.
Lovely sandy beach and dunes. Very easy to socially distance during the Covid-19 pandemic. The car park is very small and very little in the way of verge parking . Down a narrow single lane road. No toilet facilities open when visited
M. W.
Brill place to walk the dogs and brilliant scenery
D. A.
Great place for a walk in a lovely natural area. Sand dunes, beach, lovely open area to explore. Very glad I went. 😁👍
B. T.
Clean beaches with stunning views. Kids absolutely loved it as did we. Only downfall is pay and display machine didn't accept cards. Luckily a passer by helped us out
A. L.
I like walking the dogs here, and it's also good for swimming when the tide and weather is right. Unfortunately, when this happens the small car park gets full very quickly.!
A. S.
Need an app to park as cash not working, got a phone signal and managed to download. Wide clean beaches, lots of birds, lovely wee ice cream shop in carpark.
K. R.
Fantastic place! Amazing views, huge sand dunes
N. W.
Lovely, dog friendly beach. Very shallow sea and also high sand dunes inland.
S. P.
Sandy dunes, a long beach, and a large outflow. A pleasant place for a walk in the morning and in the evening. An interesting fact is the gel creatures glued here and there that can scald in the water.
s. s.
Great views, picturesque natural environment, peaceful if slightly too many dogs
N. C.
Definitely worth a visit. Gorgeous views. My son loved exploring and was excited after seeing the little toads. Great for families walking, picnics.
B. D.
Very nice place to be. My kids loved it , the mountains view is amazing.
H. C.
Beautiful place
Sand dunes, toads, and dragonflies
Big car park, pay to park
Think cafe is open at weekends
M. M.
Feels like a secret, not signposted and I was convinced I was going the wrong way near the end of the journey, but a beautiful beach.
C. E.
Lovely shore walk with gorgeous view of Walney Island.
D. W.
Beautiful place. Quiet even when baking hot. Parking is limited though, so get there early.
N. M.
Lovely place. Lots of stones, not much sand if that's what you're after.
Plenty of nature to admire.
k. b.
Beautiful natural trust area. Small car park but worth waiting around for a parking spot.
J. B.
Ever changing beach, huge skies, sand dunes, excellent walks. Make sure you pick up after your dog so that lots more people can enjoy this beautiful place.
M. A.
From beautiful beach with thousands of waders and ducks through winter to coastal lagoon with starling murmrations and in season the calls of natterjack toads. I complained about being charged for parking in a previous post but the carpark has had a complete makeover and the toilets that had been on the cards to close have likewise been refurbished. So..I'm willing to pay now!
T. W.
Really beautiful beach and dunes, with amazing view over The Lake District national park.
J. T. (.
Such a beautiful place when the sun is shining. A great place to relax and explore
S. V. R.
Incredibly beautiful nature reserve. Loved all the impressive landscapes and the natterjack toadlets!
M.
Wonderful and lovely place. Only thing is too many dogs and droppings.
H.
Lovely area for a walk, great views across the estuary toward Black Combe and up towards the mountains.
B. M.
Lovely place...NT car park, not much parking though. Arrive early.
A. A.
Must visit when you're at the lakes! Great place to have a picnic as well
K. C.
Lovely place that has had their parking facilities refurbished making it so much more accessible. To park for 1 hour cost £1 which is very good...
C. B.
Great parking facilities, was very quite when we went, great place for waking the dog.
T. B.
Nice place to have a great walk with girlfriend, family or just you and the dogs. Wellies recommended.
a. g.
Excellent beach dog friendly usually prity clean too
E. C.
Beautiful place. Loads of space and not many people. Perfect
G. P.
Great views across the Duddon Estuary and up to the Lake district mountains, well worth a visit if you are not from around this area
D. B.
What a great walk along the beach to Askham stunning views we spent a couple off hour had a picnic on the beach and took my rubbish home
C. C.
Brief visit to catch the sunset, early January. National Trust (follow signs for Rowanhead from A590)
Popular spot for dog walking
Mix of open beach, extensive dunes and wetlands. Important site for migrating birds
Perhaps bigger than you might think
W. S.
Awesome beach, and some amazing plantlife if you look closely. Love the place
J. R.
Lovely place, I used to play here when I was a kid and it hasn't changed much in the intervening years apart from you now have to pay to park here. The sand dunes are still unspoilt with magnificent views over the Duddon Estuary. A bit off the beaten track so not as busy as you might expect. The nearby Dunes Hotel is handy for a coffee or meal.
j. B.
Great place for a beach and dune walk .
F. Q.
For a beach under National trust control, I was expecting it to be a lot cleaner and not covered in dog poo.
M. S.
Nice area to walk and take in the views.
P. G.
A beautiful experience walking for miles on lovely wide open spaces.
C. P.
It's good for a morning walk with the dog, changed so much over the years was always really sandy now not so much.... Good excersise and there isn't a cabin shop anymore since someone burnt it down 😪
A. C.
Stunning views and a clean beach
M. Q.
Beautiful long stretch of beach, great walk
P. J.
Stunning scenery and huge wide open beaches with dunes nestled on the tip of the peninsula. A great place to watch the world go by, and very much off the beaten track and tourist trail. A hidden gem of a place.
C.
The walk into the beach reminded me of the beaches in New Zealand. Could easily spend the whole day here. There was a big puddle behind all the pebbles the kids were splashing in. Its a great place to take photos. We had a picnic here in the evening, so peaceful. Would definitely come here again.
C. R.
Beautiful stretch of beach, good parking. Toilets on site, cafe too. But it was shut, due to season. Well worth a visit.
J. H.
Beautiful scenery even if the weather is stormy!
S. L.
An amazing place. Walk for miles. Great if you want a quiet beach to reflect
N. M.
Excellent beaches and loads of fun on the sand dunes.
R. S.
What an amazing view, perfect place for a sunset.
H. A.
Small car park but clean and tidy. Toilets as you go down to the parking. Lovely broad walks.
U. s. m. s.
Peaceful and fabulous views. Little car park and nearby toilets. Great for a walk with the dogs
J. H.
Large open space dunes and beach for kids and dogs to explore. Small car park which can get busy. Toilets near to car park would benefit from a refresh. Plenty of space to let your dogs run around on the dunes or beach during low tide.
B. N.
Lovely area of natural beauty
D. N.
What an amazing beach! Well worth a visit, nothing else like it in Cumbria I'd say.
P. F.
Wonderful place to visit and what a view.
T. E.
Beautiful sunsets, lovely clean beach with beautiful views
I. A.
Stunning place to visit with your dog. Great sand dunes and open space to roam around Great views of the Cumbrian coastline. Get there early as limited parking.
M. L.
Very well looked after car park highly recommend for walks!
A. M.
Nice and peaceful with beautiful scenery.
K. P.
It looked like a dog walker's paradise when we visited. Can see in summer that it will be really popular with families too.
r. b.
Small car park with limited space to turnaround after long single track. Needs to identify if spaces further up Lane. Bins overflowing with litter. Beach and reserve good
A.
Great spot with panoramic views
A. C.
Lovely venue to explore or relax. Plenty of natural environment to learn about. Sand dunes, pebbles and water. Car park can sometimes be busy.
a.
Lovely little walk down the beach. Roanhead is a favourite local beach for locals and many visitors. Dog walkers tend to let there dogs off leads so be cautious when you visit.
R. C.
Great place for a dog run loved it !!
S. C.
Beautiful dog friendly beach. Keep a eye on dangerous tide tho.
m. M.
Great views of the lake District fells here and it's a nice place for a walk along the beach, which should be mainly sand but storms have dragged pebbles from walney and dumped them on roanhead beach. Wildlife is flourishing in the dunes but unfortunately the beach has been damaged by pollution from the river dudon which has killed most of the lug worm that lived there. This place used to be the best place to fish for plaice.
D. B.
Beautiful place. Go for long walks over sand and dunes. It feels like you can walk for ever. Great place for bird watching. The dog walkers stay near the dunes so the wading birds don't get disturbed.
L. M.
Beautiful beach. Clean
S. S.
Beautiful sands and a fantastic view into the heart of the Lake District. Remember to bring some change for parking in the National Trust car park.
One slight downside was the amount of dog poo!
A. S.
My new favourite place... Lovely walk and can walk along the beach to roan head and Askam. Nice and quiet walk.
C. M.
The toilets do exist!! They're in the trees opposite the houses, just before you turn left into the car park.
Good access to the information booth and the toad pools. Beach is sandy and stoney.
There are lots of orchids around at the moment June 2019
P. S.
Nice quiet place, with plenty of wildlife, dunes and nearby beach.
K. C.
Such a beautiful place so peaceful x
J. R.
Absolutely stunning spot...handy parking and a very short walk with miles of lovely walks, dunes and beach.
G. H.
Beautiful views and can walk as long as you like.
S. C.
Beautiful and not very busy, highly recommended.
B. B.
Lovely beach with sand dunes. The parking used to be free until the council repaired the car park, and now the public are footing the bill. Didn't we already do that with our taxes?
G. C.
Be even better if people picked up their dog mess
d. k.
It's a great beach really but the toilets have been closed and my little girl was desperate for the loo. It's miles from anywhere so so many people must be bring caught short now and just going wherever they can. Enjoy that, 15% of Britain's Natterjack Toads.
g. c.
lovely and peaceful, tide out both times visited and low cloud spoiled the views
D. H.
Lovely area, Ideal for walking dogs
C. E.
We went when the tide was out. Picturesque spot where you are able to walk around the peninsula. Great views on a clear day. National trust car park and hut/cafe.
M. H.
Beautiful coastline.
L. M.
Fabulous and doggie friendly...brilliant 😁
S. B.
Fabulous views across to the Lakeland fells and amazing scenery. Great for kids and adult dog walkers alike. Has a lovely, happy vibe.
L. v. d. L.
On a sunny day, we went to this beach. Very beautiful dunes! The lowwater is sad though, literally no water left in the cove. Overall a nice place to spend a day!
f. c.
It's a beautiful place to visit with your children or dogs
n. l.
Really pretty and brilliant for almost any one to visit, even if it's just for a dog walk or family walk, definitely bring a picnic to sit and eat,
C. A.
When you arrive at Roanhead, the national trust shop is the only facility here. Walking through the dunes and strolling along the wonderful soft sandy beach makes for a great day out! Wouldn't be too hard to walk all the way to Askham!
S. R.
I love this beach x
S. S.
Beautiful unspoiled piece of Cumbria
C. C.
Spectacular sands and mountain views, the nature is diverse and delightful. Take a walk to Lousey Point, you'll be amazed
D.
We love the sand dunes. Unfortunately the toilets have been closed down so be prepared. The National Trust are hoping to reopen them soon.
S. W.
Amazing sandy dunes and views.
J. H.
Stunning place. The car park is very small though and there is no street parking nearby.
B. B.
Fantastic beach what an amazing place its well worth a visit
J. C.
Great open area for a walk on the dunes
S. B.
A nice quiet place for a walk with the family. Big sandunes and pebbles to pick through. Dont expect to see much of the sea which seems to be miles away all the time in Morcambe Bay.
D. R.
Nice to wake need more wheelchair ♿access had to put it away as could not go on to sand had to use a walking stick
D. M.
Goregous spot for a drink and snack. Make sure you clean up after yourself.
J. C.
Love walking my dog here, grandchildren love playing here. Just wish the rubbish was picked up more. Most of it is washed up by the tide or blown in by the wind.
M. C.
Lovely gem within the furness peninsula
C. B.
We were staying in dalton a while ago and came across this amazing beautiful place tucked away 😊 peaceful with beautiful views. Was lovely to just sit and let the world go by 😊 will defo visit again next time 🐋🐚🦀🌞

B.
Great 10 km walk round the bay what fantastic views and pick some home made jam in Flookburgh
L. S.
Our 4year old loved climbing the dunes and we all enjoyed beach combing.
M. R.
Lovely beach and nature reserve. Great views and excellent walks. There's an area with small lakes and woodland.
C. G.
Great walk to the Black Huts and beaches
but take a drink as there is no where to buy one, no wc either.
D. W.
Fabulous views and beach walk. Children loved playing in the dunes. Hopefully NT will reopen the facilities at some point.
O.
A beautiful peaceful nature reserve with a small cheap car park.
R. B.
Great little place to visit, apart from dog poo which people don't seem to pick up. Wheelchair accessible to the toad ponds
J. D.
Very quiet and unspoilt but Nayonal trust have done beautiful paths so people can access the beach.
P. D.
Excellent beach with great viwes, which was very clean. The only downside is the lack of parking available.
J. W.
Fantastic walking during low tide.
M. L.
More parking spaces, non NT members pay. Great beach. NO TOILETS from March 31 2018!!
A. P. C.
The views are amazing, the beach is clean and quiet. This place is a secret gem yet to be discovered by the masses!!!
S. L.
Nature reserve on the Duddon Estuary, Cumbria. Not far from Barrow-in-Furness. England. One of a few UK homes to the natterjack toad. Visited in early November 2017, large flock of Oystercatchers, an Eggret, and Pied Wagtail.
D. C.
Stunning! Beautiful views, fabulous walks through the dunes. Need to return to experience the Natterjacks!
M. W.
Roanhead is great, but the new car park seems smaller making it harder to get a space. As for the 'Red Hut' not selling ice cream, travesty!
m.
Wow, clean out of the way beach, small parking area but what a beautiful place to unwind
p. l.
Wonderful place full of sand dunes, birds, flowers and magnificent beach. Pity they closed the toilets down though.
R. H.
Enjoyed the natural beauty of this place
E. B.
It's lovely here great for walks all year round and picnics in the better weather.
L. A. B.
Lovely peaceful beach with sardines, don't know, where the,sea went though

Easy to get to, good car park which is free for National Trust members and a glorious beach with high sand dunes.

Had a beautiful walk right along the beach to Askam. The car park and surrounding paths in top order !
