Reviews of South Walney Nature Reserve

A fabulous gem of a place with extremely knowledgeable and helpful staff that go above and beyond. If you have mobility issues they have the most amazing tramper you can ask to use. It was amazing to be able to use this up and down hills and over rough ground to get to see the seals who were kind enough to show up. Lots of birds for bird watchers, plenty of amazing scenery, flowers and fungi. Highly recommended for all the family.

A lovely friendly welcome as we arrived by the staff looking after the area. We had a lovely walk and saw lots of birds and also the seals from a distance. We were there for about 3 hours, it's a lovely, mainly flat walk but not really suitable for wheelchairs and a bit of a struggle for pushchairs.

Very quiet out on a limb, lovely views across to peel castle
It can be exposed to the weather and the only shelters are the hides where you look out at the birds
Great day for outdoor type people
Safe place for children with a disability we had 3 young people with us on the autistic spectrum, who enjoy the quiet
Honesty box for payment
There are toilets but no cafe
We enjoyed our visit

A nicer setting, you could not wish to be at. For £3 entry fee, there is some stunning scenery to enjoy and loads of birds to see and even seals! My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed spending 5 hours there. Parking is also free and toilets are on site by the car park.

Beautiful area with outstanding views. I would personally have liked to see information boards especially in the hides which explained which animals or birds you could expect to see. That's my one gripe about the reserve. There's a choice of 3 trails that you can take depending on how far you would like to walk and what you would like to see. Because the beaches are out of bounds, they are pristine. Absolutely gorgeous place to be. Definitely not suitable for wheelchairs or for people who struggle with their mobility. Definitely worth a visit. It's £3 pp to get onto the reserve and definitely worth the price.

I loved it! Such a beautiful place. Open air, birds, stunning scenery. Definitely worth a visit. We did the red trail which was well worth it.

Lovely place for a walk, not that much to see other than the seals and birds though. Definitely worth bringing a telephoto camera lens or binoculars to see the seals though as they are too far away to be properly visible otherwise.

Lovely walk. We seen some seals while walking around too. Would definitely recommend.
All I would say is if you have a little one to carry them as we took the pushchair and it was quite bumpy it starts off on the road which is okay but towards the end you have to manoeuvre past cows, cow pats and rabbit holes on the grass but it just made the adventure even more entertaining.

Great walk around the southern headland and got to glimpse seals

This is a must! Right at the southern tip of Barrow. A haven of birds sleeping, memerating, tweeting and being free. It's a gorgeous place to walk and breathe in fresh air. Volunteers are very knowledgeable and very pleasant. We love this place and it's become a go to for re setting our mind.
