Reviews of Castell Henllys Iron Age Village
V. C. F.
Was a last minute decision to visit as I found it on a local Google search the night before while on holiday. I took my 15 and 16 year old daughters and we all loved it. The village was wonderful and really quite surprising just from the sheer size of the huts.
The villagers were extremely knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do. They were happy to answer any questions visitors may have had.
The only drawback was that we didn't have time to see everything. We watched and joined in with the weaponry demonstration given by a wonderfully captivating man, and watched another demonstration by an older very interesting gentleman on the use of fire and the methods used to create it. We did miss the bread making, crafting demo's and joining of the tribe though due to time restraints as our session was 10am-1pm.
However the entry fee was very reasonable so if we are ever in the area again we would happily visit again to see what we missed. There was some cool stuff in the gift shop and the cafe food was great although it was a bit of a wait for food to arrive but they were very busy to be fair.
Would absolutely recommend if you have a few hours to spare, go check it out.

Very interesting archaeological site brought to life. The guide knew all about the excavations and rebuilding and she was fascinating to listen to. I was able to access the site using their mobility scooter. Dog friendly too. Cafe also had outdoor seating. Suitable for all ages.
A. K.
Imaginative, educational and entertaining. Brilliant value for money with a family ticket well under £20 and a fabulous cafe on site. We loved our visit and it is well worth booking a free tour, they happen twice across each day. Be prepared to leave with your head full of Iron Age tales and smelling of well seasoned wood smoke.

Lovely experience well worth a visit. Includes a very nice cafe, friendly and informative staff, and a beautifully reconstructed iron age village and hill fort.
As we visited around Christmas, there we're no activities for children, but we still had a great day out.
C. O.
Our two kids (11 and 13) LOVED the Iron Age Village (and so did we).
It's mostly outdoors, and we benefited from a sunny day, so if it's cold or wet, dress appropriately for the iron age.
It really felt like a step back to a different age, with displays, activities, explanations, and interesting information.
The staff were passionate, informed, interesting, talented, and engaged the children and adults at every step.
The cost of tickets also felt very inexpensive for everything we were able to do there.
Thank you Castell Henllys Iron Age Village, one of the highlights of our year, and our girls have been talking about going back again for the last month!
P. K.
We drove there for an hour from our holiday location. We found it very worth while as the site is very well laid out and it felt authentic. the staff up at the settlement were excellent and we really enjoyed how they approached I think about 2-3 hours would be a good amount of time to spend on site. And would be a good morning or afternoon visit. We also had lunch there which was very nice. Well worth it
A. R.
Loved it. The atmosphere, the opportunity to sit and absorb the sights and smells, as well as the interaction with the guides. Watching the swallows/House Martins nesting inside the many round houses was both funny and fascinating
S. P.
Lovely little spot, something of a hidden gem. Didn't book in advance as the website was unclear (hence the taking off of a star) so was not able to get our full time there & missed the bit I went there to see 🤦♀️ However, the rest was amazing. The "tribe" were so knowledgeable &, more importantly, passionate. Plenty to keep the kids entertained & a lovely little café with very helpful & accomodating staff: also the tea is made with REAL milk not uht so massive bonus.
J. A. P.
What a place this is! The staff really made our day! Very knowledgable in bush craft and archeology and of course the Iron Age! Very interesting tour around the site, really captivating the audience young and old!
S. G.
Absolutely excellent!!! It has taken us years to finally visit......But we will be returning very soon. A fantastic experience, so interesting and immersive. Staff/ characters were knowledgeable, engaging and passionate about Celtic history. Also a truly beautiful setting.

Amazing place have been before not expensive great to see how the iron age lived nice cafe tasty food nice walk around the grounds wheel chair accessible dog friendly too good day out.
J. K.
Great fun day out with children. If you looking for something to do in Wales not too expensive and you enjoy outdoors then this is for you. You'll revisite and learn about past life during iron age time while spending quality time with your family. The walk is very self explanatory and quite engaging too, giving the family something to talk about during this adventure full of facts that might blow your mind away.
Make sure to speak to a staff member for even deeper information and experience. There's a cafe and a gift shop where you can find cool souvenirs... we brought a picnic basket with us, which turned out to be a fantastic idea!!! if you are planning something else afterwards, make sure you have all information at hands. There's no network coverage at all there. This could be a nuissance if you relied on your gadget for direction for example... so have your maps downloaded and ready to use offline or any other information you might require for that matter, such as phone numbers, etc.

We spent a wonderful morning at this reconstruction of an iron age fort. The staff were knowledgeable, activities really engaging for kids and adults alike and the price was very reasonable.
Kids could have endless attempts at mastering a sling using bread instead of slingshot. They will love sitting in a dark hut and having a go at creating fire. On the way up to the fort there is a great 'shoes off ' trail where kids can experience with their feet what those living in the iron age would have experienced. It ends with a splash, so remember a towel or waterproof footwear!
For those with limited mobility, be aware that there path is quite steep, albeit quite smooth.
The staff have engaging presentations which engaged all ages and imparted a passion for the history and life of the fort.
There is a cafe and nice shop at the end which are both well stocked. For those bringing a picnic there are a few tables (could do with one or two more).
Highly recommended - what are you waiting for! Probably best to book before you go.
R. H.
Great experience at Castell Henllys. The guides in the village we're fantastic, really enthusiastic and full of interesting facts about the Celts & the Iron age. The kids enjoyed the warrior trail & having a go with the slingshot too.
Very good cafe on site, which was also popular with people who weren't visiting.
C. C.
Lovely day out even on a drizzly day. Walk was very hilly, beautiful view, really enjoyed the demonstrations on fire making and musical instruments
P. R.

Amazing place - a must see venue if you are in W Wales. Quite unique. Learn all about Iron Age buildings from the in-character experts; fascinating. Great displays. Great café. Worth every penny of the entry fee - don't be put off at the cashier!
J. P.
Really lovely experience. The reenactors are very informative and look the part. Well worth the price paid for entry.
K.
Great informative village. The children found the experience brilliant. The tour guides were informative, helpful and very friendly. The artefacts were interesting The sling shot practise was great fun. The bare foot walk went down well and the woodland area. The cafe staff were friendly and the food was lovely.
P. W.
We were a group of five adults and thoroughly enjoyed the visit. The two staff really brought everything to life with their knowledge and demonstrations. If you visit without taking time to stop, listen and ask questions then you will really miss out on the experience.
A. K.
Great experience, staff helpful, Iron Age villagers very professional and helpful. Refreshments need a little help.
B.
Great place to take the kids to teach them what life was like before tiktok.
M. W.
Loved this place, staff really friendly and happy to impart their knowledge of the activities of our Iron Age ancesters. Any age can learn how to use a sling shot
M. G.
The "villagers" working there are very knowledgeable and can demonstrate and talk about many activities, from spinning wool, to using a slingshot, making flour and lighting a fire. You can even have a go at these activities yourself (or get the kids to do them).
Beautiful wooded setting for the village with a nearby stream, just perfect on a hot day.
L. W.
Entertaining, good fun for an afternoon and a nice little cafe.
D. H.
This is an excellent living history museum built in the actual foundations of iron age structures. The interpretive materials are informative and engaging. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend a visit to this site!
V. S.
We booked in for the Join the Tribe for a little extra. It really enhanced the experience for the kids who lit a fire, made bread, got their hands covered in mud and did some warrior training. Beautiful site, we were there for a few hours but we could have stayed longer.
N. P.
Archeological village from Iron Age
Huts recreated at the same site and dimension
M.
Very interesting and wonderful walking trails.
g. b.
Very interesting, wait for a guided tour, plenty of parking
S. S.
Interesting site, impressive replica buildings, some of the "villagers" better at concise explanations than others who waffled or went off on their own pet subject and lost their audiences as a result.
Some areas delightful such as the stream and the enormous pig and her piglets, others felt underwhelming or neglected like the herb area or the sensory path.
During one of the extended waffles I went to pick some blackberries and sloes. An Indian family asked what I was doing so I explained how to make sloe gin (after checking they drank alcohol).A villager then accused me of "stealing" "her" sloes, suggesting that I shouldn't pick wild berries as we were in a National Park and that the family wouldn't drink since they were Indian!
I'm sure she was tired and grumpy at the end of her shift.
(I'm sure she had no idea it was actually my birthday)
But that encounter spoiled what had been an interesting experience up till then.
P. E.
Loved it.
Enjoyed the Iron Age fire light tutorial.
The two ladies that were there were both very helpful with any questions.
M. S.
Visited during the 6 weeks school holiday. Interesting place with demonstrations and talks on how people lived in the Iron Ages. Activities available for children to do at a small extra cost. Café, gift shop and play area. Free carparking but you have to still book online at the moment. Well worth a visit.
A. W.
What an awesome day out, the people working there in the summer holidays really brought it all alive and it was super interesting hearing about the history of the village as well as the discovery of it.
The barefoot trail is a bit of an endurance event, but we had loads of fun doing it 🙂
J. R.
This place is fantastic. There were two guides on yesterday who were both incredibly knowledgeable. The kids we absolutely enthralled and so were we!
Definitely go here if you can!
:. (.
Brilliant experience, we thoroughly enjoyed the place, kiddies included. Guide was a very helpful and insightful character with lots of knowledge about the settlement and surrounding areas.
R. D.
Really good to get a feel for how these people once lived. Good car park that is also accessible for motorhome. Would recommend if your in to this type of thing. The talks are very informative.
D. R.
Turned up just in time as a school trip was just finishing and we were not allowed entrance until after this had happened.
Everyone here was helpful and friendly, and were there to answer any questions we had about the living museum.
D. E.
Very interesting place to visit. Learn all about iron age life from a genuine iron age site
H. K.
Best swason to visit is summer. Can try on winter for hut visit alone and confirm in reception there is no school party because you will not allow in some places when there is school kids.
P. L.
What a great place! The displays in the visitor centre and the roundhouses themselves really bring the history of the area to life. We were there on one of the live demonstration days which meant the kids could try grinding flour, making bread, using a slingshot, and learn about Celtic warrior weapons.
D. S.
Very informative, staff very knowledgeable and friendly, weather wasn't good on our visit which didn't help, but a great place for kids to get involved with crafts and things.
T. H.
Bit of a one off experience, do try the bare foot walk. Was very interesting talking to the guides about the construction etc. More for slightly older kids, although our toddlers enjoyed the stream, gardens and doing stone age tooling.
S. M.
Great day out, fascinating place with a very knowledgeable guide waiting for you in the main house at the village. We felt very safe with all the covid procedures in place. A very interesting day out and fun for all the family!
G. W.
Very interesting experience! Nice reconstruction of this ancient historic site. Down at the entrance you'll find a lovely coffee shop and souvenirs. Parking is free.
Definitely worth a visit.
Recommended alone or with all the family.
G. K.
Nice Indian village in the middle of the Welsh countryside, with rivers, trees and walking paths. The village itself is not that big. It consists of 4 houses, with the leader's house having a quite good decoration inside. Coffee and other amenities available as well. It's worth a visit if you are nearby.
D. K.
A beautiful place full of memories of our past.
G. H.
Fascinating partial reconstruction of an iron age village on the actual hill fort site. Interesting demonstrations of daily life but a little limited in scope. I would love to see more. The cafe in the visitor centre did good food, coffee and cake.
K. M.
I'm about to start an MA studying the early Celts, and this is an astounding place. For history enthusiasts, there's nothing better than feeling you're stepping back in time, and the attention to detail is staggering. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and hospitable and they are very accommodating to people with disabilities (I have a heart condition but they gave us a lift up the steep hill). I'll definitely be back here again as soon as I can - this is an absolute treasure and is exceptional value. It's also great for kids, I remembered it vividly from visiting as a child. Please go and visit the Iron Age Celts!
D. C.
We spent the most amazing half day at Castell Henllys! So much to see and in glorious surroundings! The barefoot trail was great fun and only a little bit painful!
My daughter and I made an oil lamp in the cheiftains hut and then we all helped to get the fire going in another hut! The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and it was lovely to see them dressed in the appropriate clothing for the time periods they were enacting!
The gentleman giving the talk on spears through the ages was brilliant and engaged the kids enthusiastically which they all loved!
We loved our visit, thanks so much!
T. S. H.
Such a unique place to visit...
Never knew about the Iron Age history...
A simply nice cafe at entrance... clean toilet also...they are selling souvenirs too...
Nice walk around the village with my husband that time!!
A. P.
Very knowledgeable people working there. Nice few hours out great café & lovely wooded walks.
L. W.
A lovely place to visit. Very educational. Not overly expensive. Fantastic for children. Well worth the visit.
K. N.
A very exciting place! I'd heard mixed reviews but our experience was great! We got to go right in the roundhouse and it was fascinating hearing all about the history of the owner and the celts who would have lived there hundreds of years ago. Well worth a visit!
C. J.
Having not visited since primary school it was lovely to see how the place had changed in the last 20+ years.
The lady we spoke to in the village was very knowledgeable about the history of the site.
C. K.
Wonderful. Knowledgeable staff in traditional clothing. Café & Toilets. Fun for all ages.
C. C.
Hmm the staff were a bit salty and had egos the size of planets! Cool reproduction of the settlement though, really brought hill forts to life for us.
I. D.
A great afternoon out. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There are also mobility scooters available that can handle things well as it can be just a little hilly in places.
D. W.
Tucked away you'll discover a modest Iron age village reconstructed on the exact site of a real Iron age village.
The attention to detail really enhanses the experience, with all round houses accessible. The staff member on duty in the village was very knowledgeable & good with the children, ensuring the demonstration was interactive & interesting for both young and old.
The site offers bare foot sensory trail, herb garden, pigs and sheep, & play area. There is also a reconstruction long boat (on dry land) to climb in and get a feel for the vessels they would have used to transport goods up and down the river.
Expect to fill about 2-3 hours here.
Steep hill to access village, was possible with a pushchair, but may be a challenge for a wheelchair. Ring the centre for advise if planning a visit with a wheelchair.
R. F.
A really wonderful place to take kids, and great as a sensory experience for autistic people. When you order a pot of tea, you certainly get your money's worth and the cafe has a lovely selection of home baked cakes. There's ample parking but be careful as the road down is very narrow so you may be expected to reverse if you encounter another vehicle. During term time, there are sometimes visits from schools which may leave the place full of children but it never feels overcrowded.
d. s.
We visited as we where passing and had seen it on days out reviews
The site is very well layed out and the huts are very worth a look we went in the holidays so had people there on site who were very good and had details of the builds and ways of life and who made the vist for us, a fire going on in one of the huts and a 2nd with items from the era.
As a full day out it would not cover but entry for a family was only 18.50
And we spent a good couple hours with the talks so we feel was well worth the vist and cheap entry and free car park as well would defo recommend this place.
J. A.
We nipped in on the afternoon of our last day of holiday, looking for somewhere chilled to enjoy our final activity. Jackpot, bingo. All the family (4 year old, 11 year old, parents, 4 month old baggage) were enthralled by the natural environment, weird barefoot torture path, fat baby pigs, round houses, boar skins, face paints of queriable origin, and wonderful resident iron agers. The inhabitants were incredibly welcoming and friendly, and the shop very marketable. We missed out on ice creams because we spent too long hanging out in the village, but the team there didn't mind waiting around for us to leave before closing up the park etc. A really enjoyable adiós to Pembrokeshire and one we're likely to repeat in years to come.
D. C.
Great place to visit. Knowledgeable staff, keen to get kids thinking about history. Lovely views. Cheap entry.
B. D.
Great place to visit to learn about the iron age, but was expecting it to be a little more interactive. Very few staff role playing/undertaking activities when we visited.
A. G.
A beautiful location to absorb yourself into iron age life. Informative staff share their expertise as you experience life in Celtic Wales. The uniqie experience of sitting within an iron age building recreated on the actual foundations of ghe original is one not to bd missed.
K. M.
Lovely place. Nice walk and the kids really enjoyed themselves. Nice little cafe stop at the end for some coffee and cake.
m. m.
Very interesting, they do talks, but i think you have to book or there at certain times of the day
J. S.
Great place to get the real feel of life in the Iron Age. Very knowledgeable staff around to give factual information. Children loved it.
J. W.
We spent an excellent May Day on a quest. I think I enjoyed it more than the kids! Excellent value for money! Thanks for a great day out!
S. T.
A very fun family day out and a great way to learn about the Celts and how they lived. The barefoot walk is designed to go in one direction, don't try to do it the wrong way around like we did as there is nowhere to wash your feet in the river afterwards.
I. A.
Super informative with lovely walks, staff were all very knowledgeable and ready to help ❤️ definitely returning when we're in the area next!!
M. B.
Interesting to see an iron age village recreated on the site of an iron age village.
M. C.
Amazing service 💕. Lovely walk area and experience to iron age 🙂 lifestyle. …

Great morning at this venue we found by accident. Real gem and fun for kids.
R. C.
Such an interesting place. We were lucky enough to go on a quiet day, so we had a personal tour of the buildings. It was a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours out walking and learning and with the Dogs!!
S. M.
Excellent visit lots of things for children also. A very enjoyable experience enjoyed breadmaking and face painting. Round houses great as were the living historians. Great fun
l. l.
Great family day out, very educational stepping back in time ,in lovely surroundings there is a cosy tea room selling light bites and a lovely selection of home made cakes, if you like to picnic it also has areas to sit outside, family tickets are £16 excellent value I would definitely recommend if you want to do something different .
J. H.
It was interesting to see the replica buildings of 2 millennia ago, especially the furnishings of the Chief's home.
However, for the entry fee it did seem to be a tad expensive for what was on display.
J. P.
Went for the ghost walk. The ghost mermaid sailor, and the Rebecca riot dude doing their skits was hilarious.
A. B.
Lovely pair of hours spent here. Tribesmen (staff) very knowledgeable and friendly.
L. S.
Very nice place to visit👏😊
Interesting storys about the village.

Amazing speakers on a range of topics about iron age living. Very inviting and interesting
P. F.
Several buildings rebuilt on original Iron Age foundations with fire lighting, face painting, crafts including jewellery making. Nice barefoot walk and cafe.
K. B.
Absolutely loved Castell Henllys, the buildings have been lovingly restored to as accurate a representation as we can expect. The staff are all enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the time period. Thoroughly enjoyed by all!
J. L.
This is a hidden gem and we were really happy that we stumbled upon it.
We were the only guests there as we arrived nice and early. The reception staff were really friendly and helpful and we had a lovely little chat with them.
David took the time to explain everything to do with the Iron Age, it was fascinating to hear. He is such an asset to the company! I’d go back just to hear more from him.
Playing with the sling shots was super fun, and the pigs were a cool addition.
Highly recommend this place if you’re in the area.
D. b. R.
Its a genuine well preserved amazing Welsh history👍🏴 …
A. R.
Great place. Learned a lot about our history in a short time. The people who work there know a lot and explain it well. Would recomend a visit there if you are in the area.
L. D.
Amazing place, very informative the guide was and I highly recommend paying extra for children to get involved with the whole experience.
B. R.
Fabulous location, interesting that it's built as far as possible on the location of an iron age hill fort.
J. S.
Informative, interesting and enjoyable....knowledgeable staff and pleasant cafe.
M. S.
Fantastic place to visit, reconstruction of original site from archeological records. Pleasant Countryside walk. Knowledgeable guides dressed as iron age folk.
J. R.
Great day out. Excellent exhibitions and the staff really know their stuff. Would go back.
F. M.
The tour guides clearly love their jobs and know their stuff. Go. Listen. Learn. Enjoy. A great day out.
T. H.
Great afternoon for everyone.
So much to see and a fun warrior trail challenge. Great staff in costume and so much fun.
P. M.
Quit a lot to see but what makes it is the tour talk, gets you involved and can make you feel silly but in a good way when you are encouraged to shout out answers and you get them wrong. We caught the talk at 2pm
R. R.
I enjoyed looking around the authentic Iron Age roundhouses and the walk up the hill to get to them was lovely. The cafe served very good cakes and flapjacks.
J. W.
This is a lovely place to visit but slightly expensive.
The staff are great and let you touch and pick up things. My little boy loved holding the sword and going on the chiefs bed.
J. -. S. T. t. T. P. G.
Great place to wander around & get a feel of life in the iron age. Fort very interesting as were the people who were showing us around & doing talks about what they knew about this world
T. S.
Great place for kids educational even for me 😆
Actors act their roles but also tell how and what things was used for and how they built them using archaeology finds
100% worth it …
E. C.
What a lovely place to visit. Not over developed like some bigger places (Butser Hill or Sutton Hoo for example). Plenty for 3 generations to enjoy. Steep paths in places. Activities to try. Cafe not open the weekend of our visit. Gentle walk through the early spring woodlands by the stream with birds singing all around. Iron Age dwellings fascinating.
C. D. a.
great day out for the kids, we went for the burning of the wicker man. Great prices and an amazing tea room.
P. W. S.
A bumpy lunchtime start at the café due to staff shortage was more than compensated for by impressive living history displays and engaging and involving demonstrations. A great family day out.
D. H.
Lovely location, well priced great day out. Kids enjoyed the pirate event which was on the day we went.
Highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.
s. h.
We are holidaying in the area and looking for interesting things to do when we came upon this place.
It was excellent the way it was all presented and we managed to catch one of the young men doing a talk around the Iron & Bronze Ages with a practical demo of the way music had evolved into some of today’s instruments.
There were a few school classes there and I could not help but think I would have learned a lot more in that environment if it had been around for me.
Definitely would recommend to anyone in the area.
S.
Interesting and friendly staff. Small but nice cafe
M. R.
I have to admit I was not looking forward to visiting here very much. However, there was much more than I expected and my daughter really enjoyed 'Joining the tribe' where she got to grind corn, make bread, daub walls, throw spears and light a forge.
C. S.
Really cool, we were there with a mixed group of kids and adult history nerds so everyone was pleased! The surrounding parklands are very nice too.
S. M.
Amazing to see a Celtic village once lost being restored and history demonstrated in such detail.
j. h.
Absolutely brilliant! Incredible buildings from the Iron Age that have been recreated, and a few interesting characters that will tell stories of the times. There was a lovely walk to the houses that passed some Iron Age sheep and a herb garden. There was a demonstration of how to make fire when I went, which was interesting. The whole place is in woods and near a stream with birds singing everywhere. A great day out and a cafe with delicious offerings too.
H. T.
Really interesting, pretty walk, good guide.
J. W.
Superb iron age village, made all the better by the expert guides who will explain its history, provide demonstrations of making flour, fire, and iron combat techniques. Highly recommended place to visit!
G. C.
If you're into proper history of our land and it's people then it's a great place to visit, the drive in is down narrow lanes off the main road so be careful you might meet cars and some campers coming the other way
R. J.
A fascinating look at an iron age village. Great volunteers bringing the place to life. The roundhouse reconstructions are great. The café coffee was a bit so-so, rather bland and not enough coffee, but the cakes were delicious. My only real complaint is that the three hour slot allocated for a visit is nowhere near enough to see it all, I expect that this is primarily down to Covid-19 restrictions though.
s. c.
An interesting site, the children enjoyed it. Nice to see how the other half lived....
J. W.
The place is good for a visit and the people explaining how we lived and hunted and how to make steel and firs were fascinating. Will probably visit again.
C. B. (. W.
Very interesting hill fort with recreations of roundhouses, lovely staff and a good cafe.
S. B.
We really enjoyed our visit. Lovely staff in the shop and cafe.
J. K.
Great Iron Age / Celtic ( we are in Wales) reconstruction. Built on the site of actual excavated examples.
C. C.
V interesting iron age village recreation. Interesting talks as well from the workers. Well worth a visit.
K. F.
Came here with my eldest son 8 and youngest aged 2 and they both absolutely loved it, the lady and man up by the forts gave an amazing show case on how life was in the Iron Age! I would highly recommend for all ages and definitely a must see if in the area. The price for a family of 5 was really cheap! Thanks for an amazing/ educational afternoon.
R. H.
Really pleasantly surprised, we expected just a small village, but got an experience. From the moment you arrive the site is clean and tidy, the welcome centre well presented and the toilets were clean. The cafe was a little expensive for food, but the quality was very good. The hot drinks were reasonably priced and of a good enough quality to warrant the price.
The site is well laid out, there is plenty to do from barefoot sensory trails to craft making, bread making, fire lighting, face painting. A very good day out
J.
This may be specific to the COVID19 situation going on right now but the experience we had was very limited. There were only two staff in the actual village and they were there more for you to ask questions rather than having anything prepared to present to you. There are about 5 round huts in close proximity for you to walk around and see but without any signs or explanations, there is not much you can get from it. I feel like this place has great potential but could benefit from some information placards or more staff (at least one at each hut) who have something to present to visitors before inviting questions
E. W.
Good cafe & small shop at entrance. Walk up hill to the iron age village. We enjoyed the extra activities put on for half term. Great first hand experience of iron age living. Really helpful for my 8 year old who is learning about the iron age at school. Beautiful, tranquil setting but near main road. Reasonably priced.
L. B.
The Iron age is at the top of a hill, accessed by a winding path, which itself holds interest for the casual archeologist, there is a "barefoot trail" at the end of which, you can wash your feet in the river.
Further on a boat is moored alongside the path.
From there the path climbs to the hilltop, you'll pass livestock, similar to those breeds kept by Iron Age man, and then you enter the fort.
Roundhouses beautifully recreated, and occupied by people who know a great deal about the time you're visiting.
On the day we visited, one of the villagers entertained us with a talk about fire, which was rather more interesting than you might think. I learned how to start a fire, because although I thought I knew, I didn't, and I learned about the nature of fire.
An excellent place to visit. Highly recommended.
A. R.
Absolutely excellent place for all ages. Staff and demonstrators are skilled, knowledgeable and enthusiastic, the setting is beautiful and the village lovingly recreated. Covid-19 measures are also reassuring: masks indoors, hand sanitiser available in numerous places, and plenty of space to keep clear of one another. Highly recommend!
j.
Great place, great tour guides
H. S.
The site is a nice enough walk on its own, but where it really shines are the engaging, costumed staff members doing demonstrations. Both extremely engaging, funny and knowledgeable. Had some cracking cake in the cafe after too.
D. B.
Nice, little spot with lovely staff and a good visitor centre. The village itself isn't that big but when we went there were staff doing activities for kids such as pot making, bread making and Roman soldier training so that extended the visit a lot. Without the activities you could probably only spend an hour here so check online before going with kids.
E. S.
Wonderful setting for a walk and relive the iron-age setting.
A. P.
Nice but only should visit if you actually want to cover everything in the area
J. G.
Really enjoyed our iron age experience - was great to hear from the local inhabitants about Iron Age life and look around the huts and learn more about Iron Age life. Recommend the experience days - my children were really enraptured in the experience.
d. w. h.
Lovely place, guides very knowledgeable. The setting is perfect but a challenge for those with mobility challenges of their own. The effort of staff ensure you have a great day.
I. m.
Awesome place! Staff are really knowledgeable and geniunley care about the place! Dogs welcome even if they do get scared by the boar skins... cafe is excellent!!! Food all homemade and super great! Had the soup and cheese toastie and was soooo good! Rocky road was top notch! Beautiful place and a fab time had by all!!
D. H.
A good stop for a couple of hours, even in the drizzle. Some huts on a hill with a couple of people dressed as iron age inhabitants explaining what life would have been like there. One guy did a great fire lighting demonstration. The cafe was worth a visit too. Jacket potatoes, toasted sandwich. A couple of specials too. A little gift shop.
T. B.
Excellent day out, great staff that are very involved
M. H.
This is a unique attraction, and plenty to see and do, with many hands on activities for children. Our last visit was about four years ago, and there has been considerable improvement in the facilities available, with a much larger visitor centre at the start, before you climb the hill to the actual iron-age recreation. The village has been authentically recreated using tools and methods that would have been available at the time, and unspoiled by addition of modern lighting or similar. Fascinating for all ages.
L. A.
Wonderful time at an excellent exhibition. Staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
I. B.
Its quite a good day out if your into your roman/English history the players all know there stuff....at the time I was there I was on crutches and able to walk the route however I would consider it to be more difficult in a wheel chair ..
J. W.
Moderately priced to visit, historical reconstruction of iron age village on an original site. Three round houses displaying different facets of village life and others showing construction. Talks and demonstrations, e.g. how to make a fire or use a slingshot add to the overall experience, plus face painting etc. Nice for younger children to get involved. As the site is 5 minute walk from the visitor centre and quite open it would be a harder visit in bad weather.
J. A.
A really interesting place to visit made more so by the those that work there. The talks on day to day life and culture were fascinating. Well worth a visit!
P. C.
Nice walk and interesting couple of hours
J. B.
Lot of fun here, staff very friendly and knowledgeable and nice walk around the grounds
B. S.
Saw this as we were driving past and turned around to have a closer look, it's not a huge place but very interesting and plenty of space to stretch the legs. The huts are very interesting, you definitely get a feel for how it must have been to live in one
V. M.
Iron age fort very interesting went on the first day it was open. So no cafe open for a coffee ect. Be careful if you have a chest complaint the hill to the fort was very steep, I had to stop a number of times to get my breath. The fort it self was worth the walk the young lass explained and answered questions we had and was very approachable.
K. J. W.
The Village often has events on - I was lucky enough to go to a foraging workshop given by Wild Pickings.
R. H.
Excellent and knowledgeable guides helped bring the iron age to life
j. w.
Fantastic day. Staff were lovely and the historians on site made the day such an incredible experience.
B. C.
Wonderful visit to a magical place. Incredible staff, so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Will visit again!
C. S.
Beautifully reconstructed iron age round houses with the storey will told.
C. B.
A great historical site with living exhibits. I would have enjoyed it more if there had not been such an uphill walk to the exhibits but this cannot be helped. Recommended for young children - I took my grandchildren. The 6 and 8 year olds loved it.
O. B.
Fantastic for a couple hours exploration with a nice warm cafe at the end. Having visited many hill forts it was brilliant to see it truly brought to life with the reconstructed round houses with their smokey atmosphere in peaceful countryside. We were lucky that there was an event on and reenactors explained the life and industry of the time whilst the children played slingshot and walked bare feet on the sensory path. The cafe served quality food, although took a little longer than ideal when with young kids but ultimately worth the wait.
D. S.
Nice place. Especially when weather is lovely.
d. e.
A truly well set up Iron Age Village in full scale, a great visit where we benefited from a feeling of being in the time. Nice tearoom , plenty of parking all you need is a dry day.
M. E.
We had a great family day out here. Check out their website and go on a day when they have extra activities. They had loads of stuff going on when we visited, plays, story telling, face painting, sling shots etc. Each hut is built over the original post holes that were found as authentically as possible.
C. D.
What a jem of a place.
Very friendly natives well versed on the history, and we even had the pleasure of a little verse of a song.
We went late on a whim half hour before closing, which was time enough to see the settlement but not explore the walks.
Recommended to all.
The gift shop is a little pricey though to compensate you have free car parking and free admission.
A bit of a hill if your pushing a wheel chair but its not Snowden.
Wish we had another hour.
d. m. l.
Amazing experience for little children to learn about the roundhouses and the Celts. We got to make bread, have war paints on face, help build a roundhouse and see all the great artefacts. Nice little play area and some pigs to see too.
W. R.
Loved this place, very entertaining and great layout. Educational in a subtle way. And well layed out. Really worth a visit.
M.
brilliant site to visit (even with current building works), Visited on a Tuesday and found they had a cooking and fighting day (every Tuesday) The staff were excellent in the roundhouses. Staff in cafe were swift and pleasant, food is a little pricey, but of high quality. Well worth a visit, the intro video in reception is worth a watch. go visit and cast a thought for living 10,000 years ago in this area.
A. M.
A great place to step back in time. This iron age hill fort is fantastically built. You can wander around a village of roundhouses, and the experience continues inside each structure. The people who work there all wear the dress of the period, and if there is a school visit, they will even paint your face. The path leading up is pretty steep, but those who struggle can get a free ride up to the fort. A great day out if like me you love ancient history
S. R.
A simply incredible piece of Welsh history lovingly preserved by those with a genuine interest in Celtic history. A must visit if you're in West Wales.
P. F.
It's been almost a year since we went but the memories still very clear. The guide was absolutely fantastic, you really felt like he experienced the stories he was telling. Could spend hours and hours here and it's a fantastic time for children and adults. highly recommended
G. a.
Had a fantastic day out here. The two ladies who explained how this had all come about and what things were like in the Iron age were very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. Very definitely a place to visit again
M. A.
Senior Crew of Ladies and Gentlemen keeping this old train going and if you watch closely you see that they almost have as much fun as urself. It's actually very nice. Friendly and fun for the family. One trip I enjoyed.
C. e. n.
Lovely site, kids loved the pig! Only 2 tour guides in character but still informative, lovely cafe on site, good way to kill couple of hours.
I. R. N. A.
Stepped back in time here... The walk to the site from reception is wonderful, with things of kids of all ages--a barefoot trail, ancient boat and herb garden.
Then you arrive in the settlement-
A sacrificial wicker man met us by the gate, we were then welcomed into the chieftains hut by a very informative guide (told us about this site and the Welsh and Scottish Celts, the Roman occupation of the UK and Europe and lots of little stories from the area)
There was also a forge-house, granary, ancient wood lathe, meeting house and a villager teaching children how to make earth sprits. After the village we walked back a different way, with even more amazing nature, back to the reception and tea room.
We chose the native items on the menu and were pleasantly surprised with the amazing meal we were given
Well worth a visit, I'd go again-right now
j. w.
Quite a small place, but has to be done if in the area.
E. S.
Must see! I was provided a discount voucher to castle Henllys after visiting their sister site Carew. It was a fairly quiet day but the grounds were beautiful and owain and liz were very welcoming.
I was so impressed with the amount of effort that was put into recreating the site. No detail was spared. What was a particular highlight for me was how you can go and explore the exhibits and its not just a case of standing there looking at things.
The tour guide owain was really friendly and full of information! I thoroughly enjoyed myself and will be convincing everyone I know to come.
Also especially grateful to liz for helping me with my wool spinning dillema!
All round great day!
T. W.
A perfect day with two eight year olds! the authentic smoky round houses, the activities with Iron Age people in costume, the craft activities with an enthusiastic artist. - , all were just right, and I would recommend it.
s. d.
Great day out and lovely food in the cafe.
J. W.
Wonderful day out. Staff and guides helpful and knowledgeable. Good coffee in the cafe. Admission fee really good value.
C. T.
So so Amazin.
The knowledge of the staff 👌 👏 🙌 👍 Amazin.
They are so dedicated......well done ✔ xxxxx …
S. B.
Recreated Iron Age roundhouses in a beautiful rural setting. The little visitor centre with modern interpretation and cafe is a recent addition.
We are regular visitors, and the activity days with costumes staff running activities such as bread making, weaving, etc definitely help to bring the site alive for us and our children!
K. W.
Great fun for a different dog walk. I used their off road mobility scooter too which made it even more fun! The round houses are nice to see, they have been recreated really well, and you can chat to the person in charge or just wander round. The dogs enjoyed meeting pigs and sheep through the fence, even if one of the sheep decided he really didn't like our spaniel, and was threatening him. The river walk was nice, and would be great for kids with the barefoot trail where you have different surfaces to walk on, and the dogs liked being able to drink from the river at the end. Not somewhere to spend all day, but a good hours wander on a nice day on the way to other attractions.
V. W.
My husband and I found this place to be a great trip into history, we enjoyed the experience. The cafe was a delight too. Staff friendly. Families we saw there were clearly having a great time too. I recommend a visit.
S. G.
Wonderful people wonderful place to take kids to teach them of days long past. The talks and tours are highly entertaining too.
C. S.
Small but interesting and charming reconstruction of an iron age village. Activities for children, picnic area and cafe. Tramper available for people with limited mobility and very helpful staff.
S. H.
Very interesting, and good to see the effort to expand continues.
J. R.
Great place, very interesting information available from the tour guides. Lovely setting and nice walks around the fort. Step back in Welsh history for a few hours. Would definitely recommend.
P. H.
We did the Make A Bow Day... Chopping the basic shape was fairly easy, turning a long log into a usable bow is something else.. Making the bow string was rewarding although quite drawn out, literally.
A. F.
I've been to Castell Henllys Iron Age Village a few time, first time was back in 2005 or there about's, I found it kinda by accident I was on the main road heading towards Cardigan and happened to see to my left a roundhouse on a hill in the distance. I turned off the main road and managed to find the site. It was a damp September afternoon, as I walked through the woodland along its paths, the path took me up a steep hill and there in an opening stood a large Round house and what I took to be a grain store that was on stilts, the place felt magical. I'd not been there for around 9 years, I was on a late weeks holiday with my partner, we came to Castell Henllys on the Thursday 12th November, the site had changed a little there was a small cafe and a little gift shop, the staff were very kind and helpful, I was hoping to be able to use the bike they have for people that have difficulty walking, I now sadly fall into that category, they told me that the bike was being used, but they offered to drive us up in their vehicle if we could give them half an hour, so we went to have something at the cafe. Both myself and partner had a bowl of "Cawl" if that's how you spell it which was absolutely delicious, we were then taken by the sites car up to the area of the Round House Village, the driver then took us into the round houses and she was able to answer all the questions we both had. For me I find the Iron Age Village to be not only a magical place but also very moving, if it were possible I would love to be able to spend a few days and nights living in the village. It's a place I recommend everyone should visit at least once.
N. M.
Live demos, great food at the café.
J. P.
The castle tour was interesting. The guide was brilliant. The zoo in the grounds was also worth a visit.
R. S.
Really good historical site
S. C.
Would recommend this place to everyone. The coffee was lovely also and the staff go above and beyond. Thank you to the lady who gave advice about where to go we found those places with a beautiful sunset but no dolphins.
T. C.
The place was very good for the family. We all enjoyed certain aspects. I liked viewing the huts, looking at their design and admiring the craftsmanship, more than viewing the goats and the pigs in the other section. Must I say, there is a male pig which is very well endowed (massive balls). The herb garden was a let-down, and I say this as someone who loves botany, but that could be easily fixed by a bit more TLC. However, not all the botany was bad, I bought a Tarragon plant from their shop. The staff were a mixed bag – one came across like she hated her job and the customers – but the majority were lovely. And, yes, I would go there again.
V. J.
With my g/sons of 6 and 8. Staff were very supportive. Boys loved the woods. Climbed into a roundhouse they shouldnt. But after being asked to get out they interacted with staff and enjoyed the chance to explore.
B. S.
Fantastic day out, and a great cafe. If you have children and pick your day correctly, they have events that all ages can get involved in and enjoy. Enjoy life. Bib S
G. M.
Great walk around and learning about the iron age
b. e.
Interesting, informative, an all round great place, easily lose a couple hours to the demonstrations by the staff. My only criticism which was felt by myself and the group, was the bard is abit of a pretentious tosser know it all type. Wind it in..
S. S.
We had a great day at the village, experts on hand to give some great insight into that period.
D. F.
Used last year and this year as venue for Legion VIII Roman Living History Group,. Will be there again August. Great spot. Well worth a visit, even when Romans not there,, Loads of other activities and events. .
M. D.
Nice way to spend an afternoon. Staff are quite entertaining when telling you about the Celts. Quite hilly but I suppose the clue is in the name.
S. n.
Very disappointed especially for the price. On the leaflet and website there's various activities etc. I appreciate we went in April but there was nothing except 1 young lad doing his verbal speil. Therefore the price should have been reduced to reflect the lack of activities. As it is I wouldn't recommend going unless in high season
P. R.
Enjoyed our visit to this hidden jewel! Happened to spot the sign en route to Cardigan and decided to visit. Would love to go back!
S. S.
So well done and the staff are so friendly
E. L.
It's a lovely experience enjoyed seeing the lady dressed up for the year off the homes built for the BC years and reasonable price. Happy I went. Thank you
D. P.
Very informative and interesting site at a reasonable £5. We weren't hungry enough for the café but it looked like they stocked some great food. Good Covid measures in place.
G. J.
Great day out, amazing history and passionate knowledgeable staff making the whole day a historical wonder. Doesn't take long to see everything, check the website or with the desk to see what's on as they do lots of events too.
S. J.
Great place for a day trip. Roundhouses are open to explore, often complete with open fire. Lots of paths around the site to explore. Rich in wildlife and rare breed sheep. Combine this with a trip to the nearby burial chamber at Pentre Ifan.
E. J.
Love it, the attraction hasn't changed since I was a child, but they have a lovely coffee shop now that was much appreciated after getting soaked by the torrential rain!
S. E.
Had a fab afternoon here learning about the iron age. The young girl in the main hut (I'm unsure of her name) made bread with my 2 sons and did a fantastic job of explaining what everything was. Thank you so much
t. s.
Fabulous place with few old Welsh huts. Good place for a walk with kids especially if you get them onto theatrical/ story-telling tour
A. F.
Really interesting site with very knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides
T. T. d.
Nice enough place for a family trip. The man selling leather (not employed by the site) was a very interesting man.
Nice coffee shop and interesting people.

Well organised, interesting and safe visit. Fantastic staff in the 'huts'. My children, 12, 10 and 8 thoroughly enjoyed it.
A. S.
Ok as a quick stop to see the housea but could be better if they recreated village life with actors etc and activities for kids. Overall it was disappointing, having travelles for 3 hrs to get to the site
J. A.
Fantastic. Great, knowledgeable talks, very enjoyable. Food was delicious, and vegan catered for. ❤️
