This was probably the best part of the trip, if only because it was the quietest, aside from being in the mountains. Would definitely recommend going at the end of the day, less people. The exhibits inside are worth the trip itself but they have benches placed throughout and if you happen to go at time with less traffic you can almost feel what those that built the place must have felt. Just a really nice place. I’d recommend planning this towards the end of your trip

Beautiful scenery from a walk through the woods and a nice boat trip to get to the island. A lovely picnic spot with a view of the lake. If you are planning on visiting other castles then I recommend purchasing a travel pass as it will save a lot of money.

Marvellous place in good weather. An interesting man took us over (summer 2016) on the boat. Wee shop and loos on the island which is where you get your ticket/show your membership card. Suitable for a short walk. Best for a picnic or just a peaceful couple of hours.
Hotel/restaurant near the boat pier on the mainland (white building in the photos).

The place is nice because it is in the middle of beautiful lake of Menteith. The little island, on which this priory is build, is very nice and contains some rare tree species that only can be found here.
The priory is quite interesting, though not as large as we thought it would be, in about 30 minutes you can explore the entire priory. A walk around the island is also about 30 minutes. But that is all there is you can do.
When it's busy it might take a long time before you can leave the island because only 12 persons fit in the boats.
The people working here are very nice and service is great!

Fantastic little island with priory ruins. Small boat takes you across during summer months. Nice to take a walk, sit and enjoy some quiet time.
M. R.
Fantastic place to spend few hours with family. Boat trip is a great fun and something different. Full of great history and nature.
A. J.
This place is a must to visit. It's a little boat ride to the island then you pay to get in and then you can stay till the last boat if you so wish.
T. B.
A beautiful location. When you step off the boat and onto the island, you instantly feel the peace and tranquility the residents must have felt.
D. C.
Lovely day out , history was interesting and great spot for picnic. Ferryman was friendly and Informative.
F. C.
A wonderful atmospheric place. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here for three weeks as a child for her own protection.
D. Y. (.
Great place to take a break and walk through the ruins of the Priory. The boat ride is under 10 minutes and is part of the charm. Ask the operator about the RAF Spitfire in the lake.
N. W. F.
Great day out, worth taking the boat over to the priory. Take a picnic but don't leave your rubbish.
T. B.
So peaceful here. Walk beneath the trees and the island or sit and enjoy the quiet.
f. c.
The Island and priory are very peaceful and interesting; which is really amazing are the ancient chestnut trees surviving there from centuries.
J. V.
Very interesting and even more interesting for the kids who have to find 3 red squirrels (cartboard cut outs) which are hidden on the island
M. D.
Really interesting ruin to explore, with a short enjoyable boat ride out to it...

Good drive to get to priory & an amazing boat trip across the Loch to get to it good day out for the kids as well 👍

This is a beautiful little island. It's a tranquil place to wander, meditate, and get a taste of medieval monastic life. The ferry to the island is a fun experience in and of itself. The ferrymen are very knowledgeable and entertaining. They did mention to us that the sitter can be quite crowded in July and August, with the best times to visit being May (when the flowers are in bloom), and September
N. L.
We weren't sure what to expect him coming here but really had a great time. The boat ride was short but have nice views. The history and the ruins were great. We really enjoyed walking around and relaxing on the island. We were here for about an hour Which was enough time to see everything
Great place
K. P. M.
Really wonderful, historical loveliness! Beautiful setting!

Nice escape to a not so remote little island. There's not a lot to do but it's perfect for a picnic and just relaxing on a bench or a blanket in nice surroundings. It was even possible to go for a swim during the heatwave and lot of people took advantage of that. Shop is tiny with limited stock so be sure to bring your own food/drink. The boat ride costs £7 per person and you can pay by card once you get to the island. Last boat back is about 5pm during the season so plenty of time to explore. Some people even brought their dogs there without any problems. You can park right at the dock but it's always full which is why we parked in a nearby lay y, about 5minute walk away. Worth a visit even just for the boat ride😊
C. S.
Beautiful surroundings, amazingly tranquil, simply stunning place on a summers day. Even on a typically Scottish day it is very pleasant and the boat trip out to the island really makes it special. Definitely a bit of a hidden gem. The staff are also fantastically helpful, knowledgeable and interesting to chat with. You should take a picnic and if the weather is really nice some swimwear or just paddle if you aren't willing to brave the water.
J. D.
Beautiful, peaceful, historic... A welcome break from the city.. 😊
S. T.
A great experience! The priory ruins are on an island in the middle of Lake of Mentieth. To get there, you summon a small ferry by turning a white board towards the island. The ferry (a small launch) takes about 5 minutes, during which the boatman tells you about the lake and the island. The ruins are very decayed but still interesting. And you can walk a circuit of the island, which takes about 15 minutes and is quite beautiful.
S. B.
Beautiful Island with old ruins. It has a lot of history and it's a really interesting place. You take a boat over to the island and from their you can explore the island. There are some great spots for picnics!
B. B.
Absolutely great visit.. Highly recommend.. Great family day out..
C. M.
One of the best places to visit in Scotland. There is limited parking off road. then a boat will take up to 10 people across. Dogs are welcome but on the lead only. There are toilets on the island. Most people go walk round once and then head for Loch Lomond, however it is a great place for a picnic. There is a lawn with benches and fine views across the lake to the hills.
H. S.
Beautiful. You vet to take a nice boat ride to the island, and the priory ruins are very impressive. The island itself is so green, it's the landscape I wanted to see when we came to Scotland. Well worth a visit.
S. P.
Always a fantastic place to visit A lovely boat trip and the boatman was fascinating with his knowledge of the Island History, Flora and fauna. The round of the Priory are magnificent. It's is such a wonderful place to visit.
P. P.
Nice place to visit for an hour or two. Entrance charge includes the cost of the ferry. The guide book from the shop is very informative and recommended. When we went a lot of the building was closed off by high mesh fencing, spoiling the opportunity to see and photograph it properly.
T. P.
Have to catch a boat to the island which makes it even more magical. Isn't as much information about the priory with out a guidebook but it is a great day out. A very special island I am planning another trip to see the island in the spring covered in bluebells
S. R.
One of our favourite places to visit. Great place for a picnic in beautiful surroundings. We love the walk around the island. It is so quiet and peaceful.
Staff in shop and boat are very friendly.
D. S.
A very beautiful island and interesting ruins. I did expect it (the ruins) to be slightly larger. Taking the boat to a Historic Scotland property is fabulous though!
M. S.
An accidental discovery that was most definetly worth a visit! It was only seeing the road signs that took us here - hence why it was such a surprise to see that it would take a boat ride to get to it a very happy surprise at that i must say! Just wish I'd gone earlier in the day and not left it so late! Really could spend hours here exploring the island it's sooooo peaceful and so much history! Gutted I didn't get to see the red squirrels that live there as well but guess that's my fault for making it such a short visit!
J. G.
Thoroughly enjoyable, kid and dog friendly trip, starts with a lovely boat ride across the lake to a very quiet and peaceful island, The priory remains are interesting but we stayed for ages just enjoying the peace and quiet. The staff on the boat and in the gift shop are really nice, friendly and knowledgeable. Great value for money with the ferry boat included in the entrance cost (£5.50 per adult).
It's a small island, takes about 15 minutes to walk right round then you can just sit, soak in the history and admire the wonderful views in every direction. Best combined with a trip to Aberfoyle, Callender or maybe the Agaty red kits at Doune for a full day out.
G. S. (.
Truly historic place, take a picnic if the weather's good
M. S.
Pleasant place for a quiet walk and a chance to get out on the water with a piloted short ride to the island. Lovely priory ruins and gorgeous old trees on a nice circle path around the island.
C. M.
Beautiful and tranquil, it's a wonderful place to spend a half day or more, interesting history, great views and (as ever) a wonderful welcome from the excellent staff from Historic Scotland. Bring a picnic, ideally pick a sunny day and enjoy a peaceful and interesting day!
j. w.
What a lovely island full of history and well taken care of. Rab Roy, Robert the Bruce Mary Queen of Scott's visited here and many more. A must see for anyone and great day out for families to learn about local history and take a wee picnic.
S. J.
Beautiful island on Lake of mentieth. The ruined priory is lovely. The ferry trip over is super. The staff are very friendly and informative. Altogether I lovely day out. Take a picnic. Xx
A.
so beautiful and so worth it! we brought pastries and water and after exploring the island had a lovely 'picnic' right by the water's edge on some lovely benches. so picturesque!
A. M.
Interesting place and very scenic. You get a boat out.to the island which is fun and different
Island is small but lovely and tranquil to walk around.
F. C.
It was a dreich day and quite cool but well worth the boat ride over and the ruins of the Priory itself were fascinating. Some pretty famous people visited when it was in working use!
G. D.
Great for a day out. Boat trip, ruined priory, woodland walk and picnicking. Bring your own picnic though, gift shop is just that, only sells gifts.
J. C.
One of my favourite place in the world.
I come here each time i went to Scotland. I think it's a mistic and magical place... However , please take away that awful fences from the ruins :-(
Long life to Inchmahome !
L.
Lovely boat ride to this little island. History about Mary Queen of Scots and Robert the Bruce. Peaceful walk round the island.
V. B.
Fantastic place. Lovely boat adventure with the kids. Saw an osprey too. Luckily we visited on a beautiful sunny day, which helped
C. T.
Beautiful and almost sacred place. In the chapel there is a grave there of Walter Bailloch Stewart and Mary, his wife. They lie in each other's arms, I've never seen any thing like it before, it's seriously moving.

The effigy of Walter and his wife, Mary I, Countess of Menteith.
V. H.
Excellent place to take the grandchildren on an adventure; boat ride, explore the island and the ruined priory. Take a picnic - great fun.
A. C.
A very nice place to visit. Boat seats 12 max and is very regular.
The boat man can tell stories, just ask a question.
A. A.
Rare day off treat, well happy the dog was allowed on the boat too. Had a great time pretending to be a Canon.

Serene. Once visited, it's obvious as to why Mary, Queen of Scots, was brought as a child, primarily for her safety though she must have loved it as much as young children today do. Magical.
1.
Very peaceful island, covered in blue bells. Nice boat trip on lovely lake.

An interesting island on the only lake in Scotland, owned by the national trust and accessed by small boat.

(Translated) Awesome! Take a boat to the island. Unfortunately, there were now fences around the priory (second home of a monastery). But a walk on the island leads past beautiful old and mighty trees. We heard from the skipper that stones from the priory were used in Stirling Castle. The boat trip and the tranquility of the island make a visit to Inchmahome Priory a wonderful day out.
(Original)
Geweldig!
