Reviews of York Gate Garden
P. G.
A nice compact garden with some achievable design ideas combined with some unusual plants. Plenty of details to explore within the multiple "rooms". Well worth a visit and the plants on sale were very good quality.
J. F.
Amazing winter structure sets of the snowdrop collection.
Excellent cafe, gift shop and plant sales.
Gardeners and volunteers have done a wonderful job. Love the kokedama.

Took my nan and it was a lovely experience. The gardens were beautiful with a guide telling the story behind them. Ate at the cafe in the grounds. Friendly and helpful staff topped off with a nice light lunch. Perhaps the menu be broadened, but overall superb
L. H.
First time visit beautiful setting the garden is lovely we had lunch in the cafe and the staff are friendly and knowledgable.

Beautiful gardens with various landscapes to explore and enjoy and find inspiration for your own green space.
C. M.
A wonderful gem of a garden. Diverse and beautiful. Expanding all the time. Brilliant cafe and nursery too. The planting is beautiful. If you haven't visited before you are in for a real treat.
E. L.
A Gem of a garden. A beautiful garden with such a personal touch. Amazing how new experiences open up at every turn.
V. C.

N. G.
Beautifully maintained and varied garden, a lovely place to visit on a sunny day
L. R.
Amazing visit and l need to use a mobility scooter. I am unable to walk and use my own mid sized scooter to get about. We arrived complete with scooter and grandson in pushchair. Staff were absolutely amazing ,making our visit so easy, showing my husband a route l would be able to use. We also used the cafe , easily accessible, disabled toilets too.Garden was really impressive, but for me it was the staff that made our day very special.
A. D.
Lovely small garden, but we went on the garden tour, which we thought was about the things growing in the garden, but it was more about the family who lived in the house. which we were not really interested in. So be aware. We enjoyed our visit very much, the tour was done very well,it just wasn't what we expected, I just wanted to inform others so they knew what to expect and make their decision accordingly, I will certainly visit again.☺️

This is the most fantastic garden brim full of unusual plants put together in different areas of interest, I loved the conifer garden, and the tender herbaceous area, but it was all spectacular, I spent 6 hours there and could have spent longer. A garden for a plantsman, but lots of sitting areas just to enjoy the peace and vistas. Lovely cafe, good toilets and a plant shop...what more could any one want.
J. B. C.
Amazing. Beautiful. Well planned garden, all run by volunteers.
P. P.
Lovely garden, well managed and always a delight to visit. We have been members for a few years now and always enjoy our visits. The new catering facilities, carpark and plant sales are fatastic. Would highly recommend York Gate Garden and the Perennial charity. An oasis of beauty and calm.
e. A. (.
Well laid out and an interesting visit. Reasonable admission price and plant prices. Also plants in great condition, with some unusual specimens. Big thanks to the volunteers who gave a great welcome.
D. J.
So I discovered York Gate Garden by accident when I took a wrong turn on a spontaneous hour long walk to Adel Nature Reserve. I had literally rolled out of bed and gone straight for a walk so probably looked (and smelled) like a total mess 😂 but every single staff member I encountered showed the utmost courtesy and friendliness and all were helpful whenever I asked a question. From the gardener I met outside to the staff in the café to the woman in reception and the gentleman doing guided walks, everyone was perfectly lovely. The Scones and Earl Grey were delightful and it was such a pretty little garden. They made my Easter Day an excellent one to remember. Thank you all! 🙂♥️
S. F.
I love this local gem. The refurbishment works well to give more space. The cafe is wonderful, and the gardens are a great place to visit where you can also chat to the gardeners. Run by volunteers the atmosphere really is delightful.
D. H.
Excellent. An interesting hour spent walking around the garden. Then into the refurbished cafe for a great ham sandwich and tea.
A. K.
First time I’ve been here and I’ve lived within two miles of the garden for the past 20 years.
It’s a wonderful little place with amazing flowers and plants plus a great cafe with lovely food. Easy parking and lots to see. Highly recommended. The staff were great too, very helpful.
G. C.
This is a really special place .Aside from the beautiful location and the lovely food it is "manned" by some of the kindest people I know.We took a friend who has some mobility issues and there was no hurrying or impatience to get her to our table.Seems a small thing but makes a big difference. We return often!
C. W.
Lovely gardens, well covid safe organised, more of a morning or afternoon visit thing than a full day trip so bare that in mind. Cafe was nice, went for coffee and cake but the full lunch menu looked great.
M. B.
Beautiful garden with wide variety of plants, featuring cafe, souvenir shop at the entrance and the plant shop. I give 4 starts only because it is quite small and the entrance fee relative to its size seems too high. Nevertheless, the garden undergoes some renovation/changes hence there is a chance that it will be enlarged soon.
M. D.
Lovely place but the mocha I order was luke warm. They did over to make me another but I asked for it just to be warmed up. Came back lovely and hot.
K. G.
Fantastic, well kept gardens in a wonderful location.
Well worth a visit, cafe on site
D. P.
Always a beautiful garden. Just a quick visit this time so didn't use cafe etc.
J. C.
Lovely gardens, super friendly staff. Highly recommend the cafe.

J. J.
A small but very beautiful garden, very enchanting

We had a lovely day out at York Gate Gardens. Owned and Managed by Perennial. We also had a wonderful guided tour by a very knowledgeable lady called Hilary. Would definitely recommend York Gate Gardens and the tour to everyone.
j. g.
WhY a surprise York gate virtually on my doorstep and I had never heard of it. Nicely set out and quite colourful for a winter/spring garden, set in a lovely location in Adel , Leeds well worth a visit.
f. m.
Absolutely beautiful garden! Really friendly staff and lovely cafe with vegan cake options. Can't wait to go back.
C. N.
Beautiful garden, or really a set of inter connected gardens. Friendly volunteers and a great café too.
J. L.
A very small garden site - really more like a series of garden rooms. Excellent.
D. F.
Would go again. Enjoyed our visit. Lunch was excellent too.
R. C.
One of the country's finest small garden, open to the public for 6 month per year. Owned by horticultural charity Perennial.
L. F.
Beautiful gardens. Will be back in the summer when the wildflower Gardens are open. Cafe was run very well, food was well presented, plentiful and rather well priced. Staff were fab. Thank you, see you again soon
E. A.
Always interesting and different plants to see. Volunteers and staff are friendly. Bear garden
S. W.
Although it was cold, it was still pleasant walking round the gardens. Saw volunteers digging in an extension, was excited to know whether it was going to extend the gardens to walk round? Lovely gift shop with eco friendly gifts, made a purchase. Cafe; staff friendly, food delicious and good choice of food including special diets.
A. F.
What a beautiful afternoon spent here. Such a beautiful garden to look at 😍
M. R.
Lovely to see the garden looking so well cared for, and the tea room is excellent value
D. F.

A. H.
Lovely garden, delicious food and friendly staff.
L. R.
Magical, lovely lunch, cakes and tea. Very helpful head gardener and volunteers.
W. P.
Stunning garden - a hidden gem on the outskirts of Leeds. York Gate was the Spencer family’s home who bought a house with a few acres of land. They weren’t gardeners but loved plants and nature. Guided by inspiration from the Arts & Crafts movement they created different outdoor rooms, working with plants carefully sourced from varieties well suited to the environment and conditions within the garden. Perennial - a benevolent charity supporting gardeners and their families during times of need were gifted the garden after the last of the Spencer family died.
Head gardener Ben Preston now carries on the work of the Spencer family, and with his small team and army of dedicated volunteers curates this wonderful hidden gem.
I. F.
Good garden in a deceptively small space with plenty of inspiration
M. M.
A relaxing place to revitalise your mind and be at peace with nature.
a. c.
A lovely place, staff very friendly & will answer any queries. Not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs
S. S.
Lovely intimate gardens to walk round. Would have benefitted with some plant name as l was not familiar with quite a few
Cafe great and the quiche l had was delicious.
All the staff we met were helpful, chatty, and very accommodating.
p. f.
An interesting garden set out as a series of themed rooms. Our second visit and just as good the second time round. The food in the new cafe was excellent.
E. P.
Lovely place- I little smaller than I expected. We went for my Grans 80th and she loved it. The food from the cafe was also very nice!
M. W.
Absolutely delightful little garden, divided into tiny garden 'rooms'. An excellent garden for a plant enthusiast and for anyone seeking design inspiration for a border or small garden. Not great disabled access, impossible for a wheelchair and tricky for someone with a wheeled walker, ok if you use one or two walking sticks.
R. N.
Always so good here. Very relaxing
C. C.
First time I've been since the pandemic started. A huge difference to my last visit. Everywhere looked clean, bright and fresh. We used the cafe and were very impressed by the efforts gone into making it user friendly. The nursery was the same. Staff and volunteers were welcoming and helpful. Definitely going again soon. Need to pre book to visit the garden's.
M. A.
Large house garden on the outskirts of Leeds. Divided into well thought-out themed 'rooms'. One way system currently in place for social distancing so pay attention to planting as there's no going back. Attractive garden meadow area at side of ample parking area.
J. C.
York Gate garden was good, and the bacon butty in the cafe was excellent.
J.
Easy way to spend an hour or so, lovely garden.
M. W.
A beautiful arrangement of garden rooms. It's a credit to the original creators and the existing gardening team. The soup of the day was carrot and coconut and served with a lovely warm roll which was delicious.
S. L.
Beautiful gardens. All run by volunteers. Parking, toilets, cafe, shop. A hidden gem. Become a "friend" £30pa or £7 a visit ❤
J. O.
Lovely place to visit, great food and lovely people 👍
T. A. f. k. a. D. D.
Had a really enjoyable visit and will call again when in the area. Cafe was really well run and the food was great and good value too. Many thanks to the volunteers.
L. R.
Nice gardens and paddock area.
Good parking area
Cafe food good quality
Staff polite and friendly
Small shop selling plants and tools
If visiting all,2 hours is enough
D. H.
Stunning little garden. It is dinky, we really took our time and were there for about and hour and a half (didn't visit the cafe). Considering an annual membership as I would really like to go back.
B. H.
Very good place indeed. Staff very friendly, food was delicious. Will return when we are in the area. Thanks.
S. T.
Intriguing structures and interesting plant composition. Great coffee cake and drinks. Really nice volunteers. Unusual things in shop and plant centre.
J. H.
Uplifting garden with beautiful vistas. Lovely volunteer staff and delicious tea room.
i. s.
Lovely breakfast, served by lovely people. A little gem in Adel. Well worth a visit .
C. W.
Small 1 acre garden but beautiful place to visit. Touching story behind the construction of this interesting garden - quiz sheet for children. Tea shop is lovely and tasty sandwiches and homemade cakes and scones. All the staff are very kind and helpful. Great place to while away a lovely sunny summer afternoon.
A. K.
Delighted to provide the 100th review. I came here with my wife and parents and we all absolutely loved it. The staff and gardeners were extremely kind and engaging and the gardens were an absolute joy. Though the size is small, the garden is mighty. More variety in this one garden than in many a park. We will definitely be visiting again. My parents even became members.
I look forward to visiting again and speaking to the gardener's about the flowers, shrubs and trees that I like.
A. D.
Super friendly staff and efficient when helping you in the cafe. Try the sausage bap made with locally sourced meat... superb. The garden offers surprises around every corner.... a great way to relax for a couple of hours.
A. M.
Love this garden. It's in loads of garden design and inspiration books and well worth seeing in person. The owners, Perennial, are doing loads to improve the facilities for visitors yet it retains a personal and well loved feel throughout. The tearoom is great - home made food and staffed by volunteers who want to be there!
G. B.
A beautiful little garden, well worth a visit. Lovely cakes too
d. g.
Really beautiful gardens and lovely cafe. Just had a problem with accessibility to some areas because I visited with a friend who has mobility problems.
F. P. W.
Terrific, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff, many of whom are volunteers.
Lovely food for lunch and the gardens were amazing given the recent weather
s. c.
I've been visiting York Gate since the days when Sybil used to sit at the gate in her wicker chair and collect money from visitors and it IS my favourite garden so I was thrilled that it's finally re-opened, plus we got a chance to see the new café and plant nursery which, given that the garden surrounding the new addition is still developing, is looking really good. As always the garden itself looked stunning thanks to the dedicated gardeners and it just warmed my heart to be back there. We bought some wonderful plants and can't wait to revisit and sample the café as we went just prior to it opening. Congratulations to all those who've cared for it through lockdown, it looks fantastic.
M. D. V. E.
A relatively small but skilfully designed and maintained garden containing various ‘rooms’ and styles. Very friendly and helpful staff. It closes at 4.30 and charges £6 a Head for adults. Cafe and gift shop are all rather pleasant. Worth a visit to the nearby Adel Church next door. Parking not available by the main entrance but signs direct you to where it is.
H. M.
A small 1acre garden. Lots of different areas. Has a small tea room that has gorgeous food. Small menu. Good reasonable price. Allow 1 to 2 hours. Was excellent if you want tranquility and beauty. Wide variety of colours and flowers
M. P.
Brilliant a most go to place 👍🏼
B. F.
York Gate Garden is a delight! We were so pleased to get a brief history of the garden from the friendly volunteer who met us at the entrance. He told us it would be the best garden we'd visit this year. He was right.
How has so much been packed into an acre? We particularly loved the cacti and succulents, and the beautiful pond.
The tearoom is very good and the cheese scones are excellent.
We'll definitely return to see the garden in a different season.
T. B.
It's always a joy to visit York Gate Gardens, whatever time of year. Loads of interesting plants and wonderful structure and layout. Something fascinating around every corner. New tea rooms a big hit.
J. T.
Wonderful garden rooms to explore. Great food in the cafe and very tempting plant sales 🙂
M. G.
I have to admit, I just started to volunteer here, but it only took me one visit to know this was the place! All in 1 acre is a multitude of separate gardens each with it's own character. I've been to lots of gardens but this one is unique. This is an Arts and Crafts garden created by a family with a great eye for design. The cafe, well, the cakes are to die for. There are plans to enlarge the gardens so it can only get better.
P. C. M.
Such a well kept place, beautiful gardens, easy to access, great food and lovely staff .
S. W.
Spent a delightful afternoon in the beautiful grounds late August. So many beautiful plants and ideas. Took away a brilliant idea for growing courgettes on a trellis frame, rather than taking up a whole bed for them - next year!!
Plant sale was rather lack-lustre but the cafe with excellent quality tea and cakes made up for it. All staff friendly and engaging, but would have liked to know more about the names of the plants.
S. a. G.
Amazing renovation. Great cafe with lovely home made food. Rain prevented me going round gardens but I will be back.
J. S.
It was very well laid out and not too large to go around ,lovely cafe there with all covid restrictions in place, and of course having a lovely sunny day made the experience all the more worthwhile
L. W.
Pretty little garden. It gave us lots of ideas on how to improve our borders. The staff and volunteers are very helpful. The cafe cater for Coeliac's. So we had a nice cup of tea and a piece of gluten free apple and sultana cake. It was a perfect afternoon.
J. D.
We love this place! Cleverly put together little garden with lots of hidden delights.
They have just embarked on a big rebuilding project for next season incorporating the property next door, so we will be visiting again in the Spring.
C. a. P. (.

B. D.
Lovely place . Will have to come back now to see everything come out. Loads to see in the garden and a lovely tea room. Service was a little slow but food very nice. Gorgeous tulips!
J. F.
Amazing gardens, so much to see. Excellent cafe and plant shop
L. N.
We enjoyed visiting the garden, which is very well kept. Upon our arrival, we purchased 2 adult tickets, however we were not told that we could purchase an annual ticket (which cost twice as much as 2 adult tickets). Had we known that, we would've bought the annual ticket to start with. When we returned to the till to ask about upgrading our 2 adult tickets to an an annual ticket, we were told that they could only put the cost of one adult ticket towards the annual membership, and not both. Although we didn't think that was fair to us (as we weren't presented with the option to start with), we paid extra for the annual membership. As this is rather annoying, we would recommend that visitors ask about the ticketing options, as it seems that it was their duty to keep us informed, but didn't. It's a shame because we enjoyed the gardens very much and intend to return soon, hence getting the annual ticket eventually.
T. S.
