Reviews of Boundary Gardens
V. G.
An oasis of trees and quiet just behind Shoreditch high street. Perfect spot in the summer with shady coverage and no traffic on the roundabout. It’s history as one of Britain’s first ever social housing projects stands strong and it remains a vital community.
A. W.
I lived in The Boundary estate from 1970-1984, once with My Parents in Laleham House, and Then in Sunbury House with My Partner for 5 years,
So it's was like going down for History story and it was a surprise
And we took some photos too
F. “.
Arnold Circus is the heart of the East End. As you walk up the steps towards the bandstand, with the London plane trees towering overhead, it is as an inspirational space, as if you are entering a vast green cathedral. The depth of the planting enfolding the park is such that you feel a forest has been transplanted into the city.
m.
The Boundary Gardens, or Boundary Estate Gardens is a circular set of gardens with a bandstand at the centre. Surrounding the Boundary Gardens is the Boundary estate, which was constructed in 1890s and one of the earliest social housing schemes built in London.
The garden is well maintained and the the bandstand makes for a nice picture.
K. M.
Nice little gardens to sit and chill in, nice to take kids and explore the plants
J. S.
Found this spot to have some lunch away from the office and is perfect to get a breath of air away from the desk. There is a central like hut area and benches scattered around. Best time is probably in the warmer weather and is located within a quiet residential area.
S. L.
This bandstand lies in the middle of The Boundary Estate, the world’s oldest council estate, which was built by London County Council in 1890 on the site of the Old Nichol.
During the clearance and the destruction of the slum houses of the neighbourhood, the rubble from Old Nichol was collected and piled into the centre, creating the mound of Arnold Circus that you see today.
The original inhabitants were forced further to the East, creating new overcrowding and new slums in areas such as Dalston and Bethnal Green.
After all today this is a real quiet and relaxing gem of the neighbourhood placed absurdly just around the corner of the noisy and crowdy Shoreditch area.
Very Unexpected!
R. Q.
A wonderful oasis and hidden gem just off the main drag of Shoreditch High Street. A place to escape to for a coffee, a snack, to enjoy trees and clean air and space and peace and quiet. Sometimes even some wonderful live music. Love this place!!
2.
Such a nice little spot. The circle around it has been pedestrianised so it’s a quiet haven just a stones throw away from the busy streets of shoreditch.
H. I.
Great space to unwind and occasionally listen to some music.
C. C.
Killing eve was filmed here , perfect location for a quite peaceful cup of coffee and a Sandwich
T. A.
Nice little park/gardens. Lovely great big ancient trees, nice benches. Quiet as away from main roads, a stones throw away from shoreditch high street. Lovely to sit and chat to a friend with a coffee.
I even noticed the gardens being used as a ‘very London’ setting in some films (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy)!
Very quiet, I would even say tranquil, at night but be careful of unsavoury characters that walk through from surrounding areas of shoreditch and bricklane.
A. C.
Quiet place in the midst of the bustling city
J. L.
Nice quiet spot, traffic calming measure means not traffic. Bit of an oasis for a lunch snack. Also some nice spots/shops on surrounding quiet streets. Just don't expect fireworks or serious fun!
C. W.
A bit grubby and under construction. It has lots of local history attached to it as does the local community housing. 2 levels of greenery and benches with a small band stand on the top level. Quiet space for a lunch break or seeing things from a new angle.
K. A.
A beautiful, calm oasis - close to the life of Shoreditch, but a world a way in feel. A lovely place to sit with a sandwich or a book. If you're lucky, there might be some musicians making use of the bandstand
b. s.
Always peaceful. I have just good memories related to this place.
M. F.
A quirky and relaxing spot in the hubbub of Hoxton
S. H.
Although it's not much of an attraction to those that live nearby, others seem to enjoy their time here as it is regularly busy. Do not try to come here at night by car as there is no space for parking due to nearby clubs etc. There's a table tennis as long as you have your own bat and ball. Lots of benches to sit on and well presented as well as clean.
P. D.
A lovely quiet place with plenty of benches behind busy Shoreditch. Very relaxing. The perfect little sun trap.
G. C.
As you approach you are struck by the height of the bandstand. It transpires that when this area was cleared of the slums in the Victorian era, the debris was used to build Arnold Circus. A pleasant atmosphere prevails.
C. B.
Nice roundabout square with a roofed centre that looks like a gazebo. You've got all the red-brick buildings nearby too which makes it a nice view.
D. F.
Visited Boundary Gardens today and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere.
I like how the garden is situated in an area that allows one to have a nice view of the surrounding properties/city.
Was very well looked after. Beautiful!!
p. m.
Secluded and well kept community garden.
H.
Unexpected! Quiet, peaceful raised oasis topped with a bandstand, surrounded by a vista of green of trees and beautifully designed multi-storied social housing on all sides. The housing has its own history as the very first of its kind in Europe. But this 'garden' is a sheer delight! Unexpected! To be able to stop, put your feet up and take a rest, after enjoying any of the pleasures busy Shorditch may have to offer - bliss!
C. A.
The 1st council estate! Great experience 👍
C. H.
A lovely little hidden gem of a garden area in the hipster heart of Shoreditch. This picturesque Pagoda is atop the stairs and surrounded by trees and greenery. There are benches dotted around which sitting here at lunch time a serene experience. Admiring the architecture of the surrounding buildings is nice too.
J. “. E. T.
Love this little chill area. Quiet and social for people to shade themselves from the Sun and enjoy a little peace from the busy main roads 2 mins away. Its always nice passing by here and seeing people actually socialise with each other without all the other distractions
s. b.
Lots of history in this up and coming area of London.
D. P.
Why review a garden? Why not?
This used to be lovely, but has lost a bit of love over the years, its a great place to meet as its quite unique and has table tennis tables.
I think if was cleaned up and had lights and such, it wouldn't feel as it does now as it could be great.
S. L. P.
Lively place.
S. H.
More of a sentimental place for myself but it is a nice place to chill. There aren't any lights there however, so after sunset it isn't that great.
Y. L.
Nice small place, where it is possible to pay park with pace of money (because it seems not so current in London). Thanks to this perfect place, you coule visit the Storeditch city and its nice street art wall. Interesting place
A. 3.
A quiet, tranquil spot to observe and reflect within. Particularly significant in the history of social housing, the surrounding estate being the first major post slum example - the gardens are actually elevated on top of the remants of slums cleared in the development.
A. P.
Rare green space on three levels. The shelter at the top has a fantastic echo that sounds like being in a canyon.
C. T.
This is a nice place to hang out. On a nice day, me and my friends grabbed some drinks and ice from Tescos down the road, then came here, played some music and chilled out on the benches until late.
j. b.
A planted mound surmounted by a plain bandstand/shelter forms the hub where seven roads converge, set in an historic social housing project and ostensibly built on slum clearance rubble.
An strategic look-out point historically associated with maleficence and still seemingly bedevilled by a lingering reputation.
Lately a favoured vantage for 'cultural legacy' tour guides to hold forth and extrapolate.
Worth a peep in if you're thereabouts but it doesn't really amound to much
M. M.
Nice place for a rest on my journey while the dogs played
D. B.
A beautiful part of East London now becoming quite a trendy place to live. The garden is raised above Street level giving a great view as the streets radiate out from the garden.
S. M.
Cute little place in Shoreditch, were you can be in the heart of the city and don't feel the street hustle so much.. very nice quiet and relaxed small place.
F. M.
Never been there before a lovely hidden gem, it would be lovely to revisit during a Summers day
M. B.
Peaceful if not enigmatic reminder of the Old Nichol which was once one of the most notorious slums of London's East End.
S. v. W.
Love this little place
M. L.
Whilst walking nearby noticed arnold cresent from tv documentary. Had to have a look around at the 1st social housing scheme 1890'S. Looks in need of a tidy up but some very interesting buildings. Residents should be proud of the history.
J. G.
Great hidden garden in the world's oldest council estate, just a few mins walk from Brick Lane and Liverpool Street Station
K. E.
Quiet spot just off Shoreditch high Street, loved coming here for meetings and coffee chats. Perfect to get away from the stress of Shoreditch high Street.
S. P.
Found this park on a walking tour. The guide told us some fun history of the area and park. Not much to see on its own, but the buildings around it are very nice.
T. L.
Quiet and peaceful place surrounded by great small shops, food places, barber shops, designer brands, etc. I have been really lucky to leave near by for 6 months ! A must see if you are in East London
N. A.
Nice quite space, only visited at the weekends so can't be sure what it's like at other times.
R. T.
Situated within Arnold Circus the worlds first council estate.
A. M.
Interesting landscaping. Round, elevated and deep in the city grid, this small park is worth exploring. It wasn't very well taken care of when I went though.
J. W.
First visit - very impressed. Can see it being a battle ground for the two adjacent schools
N. R.
Lived here all my life. The Boundary as us Eastenders call it is still a beautiful feature to the surrounding neighbourhood.
V. Y.
Good place to stop and eat the gorgeous bagel from the bagel you can purchase on brick Lane. Only a few seats there though
H. F.
A little piece of history. This was the centre of the Old Nicholls cookery and some of the rubble from its demolition 130 years ago was used to make this raised garden.
S. A.
Lovely little spot to eat your lunch : a circle! gardens and gazebo at the top
J. M.
Very nice area. Wish it had more grass
P. S.
Nice spot to sit down and have a coffee and a chat!
E. G.
A quite oasis in a busy area... Well hidden with very strong inspirational vibes.....
A. F.
Just go there to read a book quietly in a peaceful atmosphere. If you have good eyes, you can even see the face go Shakespeare on a tree!
F. R. M.
A calm child-free oasis surrounded by a belt of big victorian houses that shelters the Shoreditch madness just 1 block away
R. M.
