Reviews of Philips Park, Prestwich
A. R.
Great place for walk, play in play ground with your child and bike cycling. There is a plenty of walking trails, river, water streams and woodlands. Great place to take children as there is playing area and inexhaustible amount of walking tracks.
L. B.
Only really skirted the park while travelling to Ringley Woods via Drinkwater on The Kingfisher Trail.. Which is worthwhile.
There looks to be plenty of places to explore, with lots of birds and other wildlife. The 13 Arch Viaduct is also close. It looked clean and well maintained in parts, and wild in others; which I like.
I'll try and spend more time when I'm next in the area.
M. S. C.
A beautiful place to cycle or walk, easily accessible from Prestwich Village; through Drinkwater Park Agecroft where there's a small car park; from Swinton via Livia Silverdale from Bolton Road, and Broughton following the Irwell River from the Weir.
The parks all link together via bridges over the river and park boundaries.
The Barn in Phillips Park hosts a cycle maintenance hub and a volunteer group.
Lots of lovely spots to chill out and relax in or go for miles discovering new nooks and crannies by bike or foot.
There's also a great professional mountain bike trail (which I helped to build!) in the park with sweeping banked curves and high rolling paths.
O. E.
Great place to have a stroll lovely park with a play area for the kids, nice to walk around, the old buildings where nice just a shame to see how the weather and decay as taken over.
Well worth the visit.
M. M.
Great place to walk round. Joins two other parks over two council boroughs ( Drinkwater park). This means you can walk from Prestwich to agecroft in Salford with out going near the road. You can follow the rover path or the old bury canal
At Philips park, there are some great mountain bike trails but by the sandpit crew to keep you active. Jumps, burns and bumps.
Manchester Trail Blazers MTB club is based at Philips Park. They meet on a Saturday morning 10-1130am. Great for kids development in mountain biking.
Good place to walk the dogs too. Just becareful of not walking on bike trails or the river in full flows.
E. S.
Beautiful place with so much history and many hidden gems to find
Beautiful viaduct and remains of buildings and canal bridges
Definitely worth a visit
Suitable for most ages and has a play area for children too
B. M.
Great place for walking but look out for cyclists! The entrance where the car park is, is a bit off the beaten track. Nice children's play area. Would be great if Bury Council could find the money to finish the buildings renovations.
K. D.
This is a lovely park for a woodland walk. I went in via footpath off the Shell garage forecourt by the big Prestwich Tesco. After walking down a steep slope you end up on a pleasant woodland path that runs alongside Bradley Brook. This joins up with Drinkwater and St Mary's parks to make a longer walk, and also Irwell Sculpture trail. There are wildlife pools, a grade 2 listed viaduct and the sites of the old hall and gardens. The route I took wasn't suitable for wheelchairs, buggies or ordinary bikes, but there are other entrances that may be. I didn't pass toilets or a café and there aren't any marked on the map.
B. S.
Good spot for gentle walks around the grounds and learning some of the local Prestwich past. It also leads to more adventurous walking into Mere Clough, Drinkwater Park and Waterdale Meadow and further afield.
P. C.
Not been here for years. This place must have been wonderful back in the day, but it's still great to walk through. Lots of hills so bear that in mind.
S. G.
Quiet places to walk, lovely areas of nature, ponds, woodland and views. We have seen deer trotting through Waterdale Meadow at the bottom. Perfect place for some down time.
M. A.
Its a nice park. It feels natural unlike heaton park. a little hard to navigate though specially the signs.
Z. L.
Today we had a very nice walk with a group of people. It was organised to find and learn about fungi. Also we had a chance to join the park's apple fair. They have a lovely converted barn to use for the public including toilet as well.
L. H.
A brilliant park, found it when looking for a new park to take my kids. Had to sav nat it to find it as wouldn't have found it otherwise. Has a good little park with swings and rides to go on. Has a lot of tracks for cyclists and separate paths for walkers, although the 2 paths to cross in places so be careful. Plenty of woodland to explore, with streams and a small reservoir and some open grass areas. Is quite hilly in places so not ideal with a pram (as I found out) it's my kids favourite park as it has a bit of everything.
k. M.
I was told about this from a family member. Grate parking free ? Grate for all ages , I was cycling . WHAT a grate place hidden 3 grate trails for MTB Ridders . Would class as mod /hard . Well worth the trip . If it had more facilities on then I would five star + it.
E. C.
First time here, lovely forest / park. A lot of side paths, nice to explore. Very family friendly so expect loads of kids and bikes
M. M.
Great place, where you can go for a walk with the dog and family also great cycling routes for less and very advanced, large fenced playground
S. C.
It's a really lovely walk and I often forget it's just on my doorstep.......love looking at all the old leftovers from the mill years down near the river and the viaduct
L. L.
Beautiful day for the bee trail that took us through a lovely woodland and into a pretty garden bees dragonflies cows sunshine babbling brooks trees and owners perfect
c.
Great place to begin MTB riding.. Great red routes for the novice and experts out there ..Trails are maintained well all in all a great place to ride . And on the plus side free parking
J. G.
Get out there, kick up some leaves, it's a beautiful day!
B. C.
Really nice country park. Well kept and good cycling routes from Manchester to Bury
R. J. (.
Really well kept park, with walking and cycle routes. Beautiful views.
G. H.
nice place for walking and enjoy the sounds of the nature.
R. W.
Lovely park, lovely and quiet, lots to explore
J. J. C. l.
Great trails for beginners like me not been down the red route yet but the blue route had some decent jumps and lots of fast sections
t. s.
Beautiful treasure. Highly recommend for beautiful walks but not buggy friendly. Loads of dog walkers with plenty of bins around
G. M.
Scary bridge. Nice views. Loads of parking.
Great for mountain biking and dog walking.
Also two playgrounds for kids.
S. K.
Fantastic park! Highly recommend a visit! Although I have lived within a 10 mile radius of this park for over 10 years, it took a pandemic for me to visit it.
You can easily get lost in the interconnecting park for hours! We spent a good 3 hours here but could have spent a lot longer if we wanted to. There were people around but the vast size meant that we didn't feel as there were many people. It felt very safe.
A. T.
Enjoy walking in Philips Park but it needs the grass cutting and the lakes cleaned and also waterdale. but still a nice walk.
m. t.
Absolutely fantastic hidden gem great for cycling children's play area historic buildings and much much much more
K. W.
Beautiful place, really relaxing and a great way to recharge!
M. H.
Great bike trails and Forest walks
D. B.
Some very nice walks
R. S.
Beautiful and peaceful. Great walks here. Good park and climbing area for kids.
L.
I Love this park, actually I Love many parks. Having the opportunity to walk, keep fit & breath in nature within a built-up area is wonderful. Phillips has beautiful wildlife creatures. A bike trail & bike club, voluntary opportunities (IEPAD) & fitness. Beautiful sunrises & sunsets, spaces to play, relax & hills to climb if you wish.
Asides from the conditions of the driveway Phillips is one of many treasures with further potential.
🧡
Ps No general public bathrooms available (to my knowledge).
Limited parking & accessibility.
L. “. A. B. -.
Regular dog walker here . Autumn colours are spectacular
D. M. P.
The mtb trails aren't bad, only small but good for a quick blast round if your local. Probably not worth travelling far for. Downside is there are always walkers on the trail even though it is fairly well signposted no walkers allowed. Nearly mowed down a full family on my last visit.
B. D.
Loads of woodland to walk through with several fishing ponds and a bike trail
Ł. C.
Lovely place. Could do with some drinkable water dispensers around the area.
J. B.
It's ok
S. M.
Great out door place for Biking in the local area. Nice walks for families.
S. H.
Great place for a walk, recommend:)
G. A.
Nice place for a walk in the middle of Urbania. Connects to other parks so you can walk forever. (Not actual game play)
A. K.
Its quite a big park that you can kinda get lost in , in a good way, however we didnt get to see any sculpture thou we followed the irwell sculpture trail. Were told later that its spread out and ppbly needed to walk futhur afield.
S. I.
Great walk,on a lovely sunny day,lots to see,brilliant children's park,this park us huge
m. s.
Popular with walkers and mountain bikers, a good number of relatively easy mountain bike trails, great for beginners.
M. F.
Great MTB track park
K. A.
Great park & forest to get lost in. Definitely takes some time to see everything, but it's absolutely worth it. Loved to see the old buildings, some cows and all the wildlife and water. Beautiful!
h. g.
It's a little gem this place, a bit hard to get to, its popular with young families because of the playground and the farm animals in the surrounding fields parking is free and there are no public toilets. There are mountain bike tracks clearly marked and walking paths. There is a serene garden with seating areas and a perfectly good lawn to picnic on if inclined.
T. W.
Really nice walk in the snow ❄. Also great for dogs 👍
C. G.
You can access several parks/walks all joined together
P. A.
Great area to walk your dog, run, cycle, horse ride etc. Can get busy these days though.
M. R.
Walked round some of the trails, but preferred it on the bike.
A. T.
Great views and walks, park needs some TLC
D. T.
Nice quite place. Changed a lot since they put in the mountain bike tracks. Spoils the park when motorbikes use them.
Gets busy and people park on the grass, but has two more car parks that are barriered off for some reason.
D. L.
Good mtb trails, although short and often full of dog walkers.
N. O.
I went mountain biking here for the first time. I didn't see many facilities but the routes we're fantastic, specifically for mountain biking. There were a few dog walkers out and about on the routes and it did make me wonder if it was bagged. That didn't distract from the day though. Well recommended.
P. W.
Nice figure 8 loop all red direct from small car park.
Plenty for every rider to enjoy fast trail decents couple jumps, doubles and tabletops.
Clear trails and well posted smooth climb back upmto Park and car park to do again.
Will return
J. W.
The south trail has been re-designed and relaid recently, definitely worth a visit! The NCA are based there and there's a group of MTB volunteers helping to maintain the trails.
D. K.
Nice park, quite hilly, great for mountain biking
j. b.
Great place to walk in the sun or rain
M. K.
Lived in a 5miles radius from this park all my life and never knew such a breathtaking Park even exisited. Beautiful trail great for mountain and bmx bikes and trekking. Honestly felt like I was so far from home especially with it being a sunny day, but even for a grim day it would be worth your time.
C. K.
Great park lots of different routes to try and free parking
J. B.
Short trails, but good fun. Some really nice views down the valley. Only rode a relatively small section of the trails (one of the reds, a couple of blue sections and some of the lanes at the bottom) but will definitely be heading back soon to try out more.
N. S.
Plenty to see and do from mountain bike trails to scenic walks, orienteering to bird spotting, Philip's park is a wonderfully tranquil part of Whitefield and Prestwich. There are lots of different routes around the park that link in with Giants Seat, Clifton Marina, Drinkwater Park, Outwood Trail and Prestwich Clough to name a few.
Nature wise there are deer that roam freely, a wide variety of birds and several ponds that are home to various amphibians.
A. W.
Phillips park is a great place to visit if your in to mountain biking. I go quite often as it's local and find the trails very enjoyable. Nothing to hard or technical and therefore it is great for all ages.
There's also a park should you want to visit if you have kids.
A. M.
Nice trails to walk
F. S.
Ever looked for a park that wasn't rammed when we get the slighted glimpse of summer? This is the perfect place. I was wearing of giving a park such a high score but upon discovering this I couldn't be happier. I'm able to walk my car knowing I have enough room I case any dogs walk by (which are few and far between). You have multiple sitting areas and a kids play park near the parking lot. You can get lost in the wilderness or ride your bike in what seems like an outstanding and challenging bycicle course.
A. S.
Great park to get away from the everyday, mountain biking, walking horse riding and more.
J. P.
Quiet places for walking dogs. Unfortunately, the money spent on the bike trail, which is great. Left nothing for the rest of the park. The top of the gardens is overgrown, we have taken secateurs to clear the overhanging brambles on several occasions. The grass hill to the monument at the top, has disappeared in undergrowth. The Philips family must be spinning in their graves. Having said that the playground is well looked after and the formal gardens. Pity about the arboretum, I remember it being open with plants and statues in it. That was in the 50s and 60s. teenagers were better behaved then. After my moan, I still go there every day with my dogs, and enjoy it. ☺
.
F. C.
Great local mountain bike trails. Also has a nice little park for children and open field space for activities. Never too busy whenever I’ve been which is a bonus
M. P. O. T.
Great park to visit. Some nice walks. Places for children to play. Some good bike trails. Accessible parking for disabled.
B. J. H.
2 red runs are good for people who are confident on bikes. Might be a bit tricky for newcomers. One to the left has some good straights and drops to get speed up and there are a few decent jumps.
The one the right is a bit more techi with lots of sharp turns.
Ventured off into the woods about 10 mins in is a great unofficial black run, around Great Place to throw your bike about and get covered in mud. The fact that its free makes it all the better.
D. B.
The park has some great walking routes leading out to Waterdale Meadow, Drinkwater Park and Prestwich Clough. Also a much used mountain bike dedicated track. It has over recent years however not had the TLC it needs and is looking a bit run down. There is great potential for the original buildings that used to house Philips Park Hall night club and the conservatory. These are badly in need of restoration and is the reason for only a 3* rating
D. S.
Great day in the sunshine, nice easily defined paths, signposts and bike trails. Good for kids, families and walkers, took dog, but no bins for the mess, had to carry it around for a couple of hours.
P. S.
I go here because I like to feed a horse their she's just had a fold the horse who does have a name and the fold does to, but that's fer me to Ken and for there ammnomity I think she is the tallest horse I've ever seen I'd love to ride her but she's not been broken yet, but she's got the fold to look after now so it'll have to wait.
R. L.
My main trips here are for mountain biking which for the area its really good. There is also a nice play area for the kids and lovely walks through the forests by a stream
J. L.
Excellent walk, people on bikes etc very friendly
D. M.
Great Park with nice walks and some cycleways for a gentle ride around as well as some fun trails for anyone wanting some MTB/cyclo-cross fun. There is a small play park for children however the park was closed when I was there because of Covid 19.
A. L.
Only 3 stars for me because it has seen better days.
"When I were a lad, the barn, conservatory, playground etc. were all in good condition. The trails were also superb because the bushes made natural tunnels, but they've now been cut back. At that time, the Park was well used and very popular."
So to make it spectacular, it needs a lot of investment, in a similar way to Heaton Park. Still worth a visit though.
F. J.
Quiet, pleasant and clean. Only issues is the areas where small fires have occurred. Go running with the dog there regularly and never have any issues. Not many bins for doggie bags!
M. T.
The park is split by a valley one side of the valley is borderd by prestwich hospital the other side is the main part Philips Park there various animals including deer and fox's a pleasant walk but eyes open enjoy
H. G.
Nice park nice walk
S. H.
Local mtb trails. Good for beginners & those needing a quick spin. One blue & two red runs, maps & markers so you won't get lost. Trails are in desperate need of some love.
T. R.
Excellent bike trials, especially for those that are beginners, or casual riders. Nice burms some jumps (but can be avoided if you don't want to go over them) and a long flat ground course at the bottom. Plenty of parking too.
The only thing that would improve this is a café or something along those lines to get a drink or have a chill..... And use the loo 😮.
N. R.
This used to be beautiful and well looked after by Whitefiel Council in the 1960s but since Bury Metropolitan Council took over it has been boarded up and shamefully neglected. The gardens around it are looked after by volunteers.
P. H.
One of my favourite places around. We go there if we need some nature time. It's one of these wild, almost untouched retreats almost in the middle of the city where you can forget about all the buzz and noise... But, if you decide to visit, please take your rubbish back home, don't live it - it's disgusting.
R. T.
Lovely peaceful place for walking or cycling, and if your lucky may catch a glimps of deer which habitate the area🦌
A. B.
This park is connected to other parks (Prestwich Forest). It's perfect for longer walks with the dog. There are a few paths that you can follow.
Highly advised for longer walks.
H. M.
Peaceful and with some scenic views. Quite hilly and overgrown, so wear sensible walking footwear. Leads to Drinkwater Park. Enjoyable for families, walkers, cyclists and dog owners.
C. H.
There are 2 decent downhill MTB trails. They aren't the longest but they make the most of the gradient and are good for a quick ride. There are also some flat trails in the park at the bottom
m. p.
Great natural if slightly underused park from which you can walk into the Clough and the Irwell valley. Great cycle tracks and trails but no toilets or Cafe's. Kid's playground.
J. M.
An amazing place you could be anywhere. An absolute hidden gem. Lots of pathways and cycle tracks, I even got round on my mobility scooter so if you're brave enough! Beauty all around 😊
C. M.
Lovely park with a nice variety of places to walk your four legged friend. But if your a beagle owner you'll love the more of the path little places to give you that country feel

C.
Great place to cycle, mountain bike trail is good, very steep in places or just ride through the park I wouldn't recommend road bike though
P. T.
Great starter trails for young or novice riders and it can be made great fun by those with a few year under there belt 👍
T. J.
Relaxing place, plenty of walks and areas for kids to leap about and have fun.
Great bike trails too.
P. P.
This is the place to come if you want to practice some MTB - couple of good downhill runs and some flatter technical trails - good place to start and test out a new bike...
S. G.
Good park for bikes and to have a lovely picnic the awful thing about it really is the spray paint on the buildings other then that amazing.
S. R.
Loved the walking through woods and by the lakes. Very pleasurable time spent.
M. A.

Lovely if you like walking in the woods quite rural not a lot of buggy/wheelchair paths. But some access.
E. A.
Home of the Manchester Trail Blazers MTB Club
D. B.
Philips park hall is one of my favourite places of all time. I remember many a school holiday, when I was a young girl, there were a gang of us, boys and girls. We had so much fun on the grounds and in the trees. A magic and wonderful place. It managed to stretch all our imaginations.

J. H.
Simply loveleh........I had the most amazing time walking around this place and the only thing missing was the sunshine, this being on the outskirts of Manchester though means sunshine isn't the norm if you look at the pasty faced locals.
L.
Beautiful nature reserve with plenty to do with mountain bike trails, hiking paths and play areas fun for all the family
D. G.
Great place, pity people dont stick to the rules though, gangs of late teens drinking beers etc

Some decent mountain bike trials. You can have fun there regardless the weather and time of the Day. The only bad thing about some of the trials is their weathering.
