Reviews of Birkheads Secret Gardens, Coffee Shop & Nursery

Lovely relaxing environment, small nursery, have a little restaurant with some nice choices, home made jams and very friendly. Lovely secret garden walk, we didn't do it, but looks lovely.

Delightful little garden run by an enthusiastic couple. Little cafe and plant nursery on site. Family friendly with a few different things to engage kids of all ages. We enjoyed our visit here with three generations of the family.
A. T.
Very pretty scenery with beautiful flowers on top of that. Nice café with lovely staff, would recommend to all ages. There is a trail for kids where they have to find certain trinkets or sculptures along the way.

Such a beautiful and peaceful place to spend a few hours. Enjoyed the café, the Nursery for buying plants and a walk around the gorgeous gardens. A Fairy Dell and Pirate quarter, absolutely brilliant. Well worth the money and we upgraded to annual as we will definitely be back again. All that and a warm and friendly welcome...
E. R.
Absolutely charming gardens, tea shop and plant shop. Visited in late August and still lots to see and explore in the gardens. Plants are in neat collections, varied zones and spots of humour dashed throughout. The jewel for us was the slate circle, could have been due to the plants there being at their best in August but really could have stayed all day. Gorgeous place to explore for an hour, longer if you wish and will change with the seasons to return multiple times.
A. A.
Lovely place. Plenty of nice corners and secluded places taking into account that area is not extremely huge. Coffee shop and plants for sale but also really peaceful environment. If you live locally I recommend to buy annual ticket as it must be interesting all year round.
S. A. L.
Lovely little cafe with wonderful views, food and service.
Didn't have time to visit the gardens but would definitely visit again for longer.
Staff all very friendly and helpful.

We really enjoyed our visit, a first light meal out after lockdown. The gardens have an impressive display of flowers, shrubs and trees, at almost any time of year. This time (May) there were snakeshead fritillary flowers in the wildflower meadow. The nursery has lots of well-labelled plants for sale. An annual ticket is worth the cost if you plan to visit more than twice a year. You can visit the nursery and the cafe without paying for entry to the gardens.
L. H.
Lovely coffee shop here and 2 different areas to eat and drink which are lovely. 2 different gardens to walk round one of which you pay £5. I can thoroughly recommend this place for a day out if the weather is nice.

Called in with our dog for a cup of tea and a piece of cake. It's such a lovely setting and the cakes are absolutely lovely and great value too. Considering its on our doorstep, I can't believe we haven't been before but we'll definitely be back!

Stunning, beautiful & relaxed little spot. Great selection of plants, lemon balm, chocolate mint, etc etc. Very tasty coffee (fantastic view to enjoy it with, swallows ducking & diving about, little friendly robin!). Amazing, lush cakes!! The sticky orange cake is deelish! The shop is chocka-full of great treats, amazing handmade gifts. My daughter got a few toys, plus we got coasters & decorated stones & terrific trinkets. Deffo going again soon 😁

A lovely quiet little place with a great little cafe, offering some lovely homemade cakes.
It is literally just off the Bowes railway path and offers some lovely little and unusual gardens that wouldn't look out of place at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
P. W.
Great place to visit I'd you like Gardens bit of the beaten track though
J. A.
Great little cafe, especially in current times as its all outside. Lovely seating in garden with views over surrounding countryside. Friendly staff and delicious cakes, it was hard to choose what to have it all looked so lovely! Will definitely return.
J. W.
Its cute. The gardens are beautiful. Peaceful. My dog enjoyed it.

Absolutely fantastic. Been twice in two weeks, bought some excellent plants. The gardens themselves are worth a visit, it's currently £5.00 to enter the gardens and it is worth the small fee. Loved it so much that I played for a season ticket, well worth the small extra amount.
C. P.
We are always made to feel very welcome. Beautiful gardens and lovely views.
Blankets were much appreciated in the snow/hail.
A. R.
Friendly and a place worth visiting through the seasons
H. T.
Lovely gardens tucked out the way in a country road, pleasant staff and coffee shop 😀
A. M.
We were out driving and noticed the sign for the coffee shop so decided to nip in for a couple of coffee's. The staff inside were very friendly, we ordered our coffee's and decided to drink ours outside. We sat at our table and a member of staff brought our drinks out when they were ready. The coffee was really tasty and it was nice to sit outside on a nice day and enjoy the surroundings. A really lovely place to visit.
C. W.
Stumbled upon this amazing garden while looking for a good phone signal. What a hidden gem. A privately owned garden formed in difficult terrain by an avid plant collector. Wonderful reasonable priced cafe and a little nursery too. Well worth a longer visit than I was able but I will return.
I. D.
My wife and I just discovered these lovely gardens and smashing tea room today. The people are really friendly and pleasant. The coffee is great and food tasty and reasonably priced. Definitely worth a visit, we'll be coming back!
C. B.

M. S.
We love it here. Beautiful gardens and the friendliest people ever. Perfect place for children to explore and play. Also a fantastic place to just sit and chill with a coffee and cake! Great views and friendly service.
J. C.
Very welcoming, the gardens are lovely with all year round interest. Relaxing place to have teas, coffee and refreshments, the lemon cheesecake is fab. Unusual plants to see and purchase with planting ideas around the gardens to take home, advice given freely by the lovely Christine who welcomes all family members including the dog. Children kept occupide with a activity sheet to find items around the garden, on a recent visit with my friend and her son we had a lovely time and enjoyed finding items around the garden. Buying a season ticket means you will be welome any time on your own or with a friend to see whats in flower( the iris are stunning) and relax in a beautiful area to have tea and cheese cake lol and enjoy the views.
S. A.
Gardens are wonderful and a pleasure to walk through! The cafe is cute, and the food there is delish - especially the desserts. The plants there are cheap, in good condition and well maintained, even found some plants I couldn't get anywhere else. The staff are helpful and nd friendly, there is not one bad thing about this place. Will continue to come here and enjoy this place :)
K. G.

This is a beautiful garden, laid out in a series of different themes, such as a butterfly garden, a fairy garden, colour themed gardens, etc. It is easy and accessible to walk round. There is also a small plant nursery and a cafe which sells delicious homemade food. A good family day out.
M. C.
