Reviews of Housesteads Visitor Centre
M. A.
Not quite a visitor center, more of a toilet and a cafe. Food is a very limited menu. Desserts looked fabulous, I had a Blueberry something and it was good. Plenty of seats available, 2 stories indoors and about 10 picnic tables outside. Playback for the young kids, including a giant metal slide.
C. T.
Very informative stop on Hadrian's wall with ample parking and a little shop. The volunteers are all very friendly and informative. Worth a trip out there. You can walk your dog around the edges of the ruin but keep them leashed as there's livestock grazing.
M. J.
A fantastic place bit of a walk to the main site from the car park the cafe is situated at the car park then you walk up to the museum and main site entrance. You can also walk along to the sycamore gap which is about 44 mins walk
.car park can get busy but we still found a place to park
S. H.
Very picturesque next to Hadrian's wall and Housesteads camp. Helpful and friendly staff. Lots of information about the fort, Roman occupation. If you like real historical stuff, you will love this place.
I. P.
Compliments other Roman sites, well worth a visit. Beware it’s a bit of work from parking to site , very pleasant and helpful staff
M. T.
Great. Plenty to see and the people were lovely.

Parking £1 for 30 mins £4 for 2 hours, & more than 2 ? Number Plate Recognition so pay before leave. Lots of parking , visitors centre coffee shop excellent , clean toilets, walk up hill free, protected (multicoloured Castle effect) steps to first floor give spectacular views. (pay for entry (or join National Trust ).
P. F.
A nice start to you visit to Housesteads Fort. Friendly welcome and knowledgeable staff. Coffee shop and toilets available. No admission charge to the visitor center but you will have to pay an admission charge once you have walked up the hill to ev enter the fort. Or can get busy here with the car park failing up in high season.
S. C.
This Visitor Centre is completely new to us as it is about 20 years since we last came to Housesteads but everything was good and we paused for a cup of tea and a Twix, after walking back from the actual site.
The car park is number plate recognition and this appears to work effectively, with a modern, touch screen payment machine which you use before you leave. All worked well with no issues. Busy!! Too many people really but it's a popular site.
W. D.
There is a good bus link from the car park the A122 hadriens wall bus.if you are walking the wall and need transport to return to original location this service is brilliant. The cafe is small but the tea and home made cakes are lovely and staff friendly
M. M.
Although the visit was free for us as paying heritage members. The car park was £4. Lovely friendly staff at both the cafe and museum.
G. S.
Small gift shop with great information. It's a two mile walk from here to Sycamore Gap.
G. K.
Fascinating remains of a Roman fort built about half way along Hadrian's Wall. Joint ownership by English Heritage and National Trust the car park though is National Parks and has to be paid for on leaving the site.
C. T.
Very helpful staff. Glad we arrived early as it was heaving when we left after 2 hours. Brilliant idea to have the installation on top of where the wall would have been.
P. M.
It's good but it's way over-priced! £26 for 2 adults and a child then £4 to park in a badly maintained bit of tarmac in the middle of nowhere! Shame on you National Trust!
D. G.
Nice place to stop whit short walk to roman fort
A. M.
Brilliant place. It was August but blowing a hoolie when we went and we were all a bit unconvinced but Ian the guide was brilliant, bringing the whole site to life.
Some awesome views of Hadrian's Wall too
Free for NT and EH cards
Deffo recommend 👍
A. D.
Great to see how the Romans lived along the wall. Pity that at the time we visited there was a monstrous eyesore construction that was supposed to be an 'artistic' addition. It added no value at all.
K. T.
What an amazing place! Info boards are brilliant as are the staff. Cafe is lovely too
S. P.
Lovely site with extensive ruins & plenty of boards to explain everything. Nice little visitor centre & friendly staff.

(Translated) It was an interesting and very beautiful tour. They are Roman ruins. The service is kind and the snacks are delicious. Don't leave it to order after 2 pm, as you may run out of it. The infrastructure met our expectations and needs. Parking is paid when you leave the site and is controlled by cameras. Very easy and intuitive. Just inform the plate at the time of departure and the system automatically calculates the value. We pay with Wise. The value of snacks was also honest.

Foi um passeio interessante e muito bonito. São ruínas romanas. O atendimento é gentil e os lanches são saborosos. Não deixe para pedir depois das 14h, pois pode ficar sem. A infraestrutura atendeu nossas expectativas e necessidades. O estacionamento é pago quando se sai do local e é controlado por câmeras. Muito fácil e intuitivo. Só informar a placa na hora da saída que automaticamente o sistema calcula o valor. Pagamos com o Wise. O valor dos lanches também era honesto.

(Translated) I had an English Heritage membership, so I got in for free, and the information about the movement such as the museum at the entrance was also kind. You have to walk up a bit to get to the museum, but you can walk comfortably in the relaxed scenery. Even if you have a membership, you must pay a parking fee. This area is free within 15 minutes and up to 3 hours is £4, so it is recommended to buy a one-day parking pass (£10) at The Sill and see The Sill first. .)

(Translated) Very nice visit, nice walk and magnificent view around the fort and on Hadrian's Wall.

Très belle visite, belle balade et magnifique vue autour du fort et sur le mur d'Hadrien.

Nette Beschäftigte, gerne bereit Informationen zu geben. Des Englischen sollte man aber schon mächtig sein.

Nice staff, happy to provide information. But you should already be able to speak English.
