Reviews of Tyne Theatre & Opera House
K. C.
Absolutely beautiful little theatre, full of character. Excellent line up of shows. Seats very comfortable and bar reasonably priced. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Could do with more toilets and probably do with them updating but overall, fantastic experience. Will visit again.
L. H.
A truly beautiful theatre with lots and lots of character. Go here, watch a show and donate to the upkeep of the building. The staff and volunteers are extremely nice and there's a wide range of drinks and snacks.
P. R.
Went to see Levison Wood and Harry Hill the following night. Both superb in spectacular surroundings. Seating is very cramped though. Drinks very reasonable as was the ice cream (doddingtons) staff were a bit over zealous with the rules around photos
c. p.
Went to see RENT the other week there was a sound mixing issue during Christmas bells and the lighting was simplistic but it's a great amateur opera house to see a show with very reasonable prices and confrontable sitting it's also great because it's a local piece of history.
N. O.
Beautiful little theatre, a hidden gem in the city and a wide variety of shows. Prices usually favourable compared to other venues in the area, including the bars. Seats comfy, but avoid grand circle row A if over six foot.
J. C.
Great venue friendly staff and great show. Sarah Milligan does put on a great comedy routine. Drinks are reasonable. Seating can feel a bit cramped however it's an old theater so is understandable.
H. C.
Went to see Beauty and The Beast with my Grandaughters dance class, hadn’t been for a number of years, brilliant show , great humour and involved everyone of all ages. Well done to all of the cast, I’m sure you all made everyone forget about what a difficult year it has been. ⭐️
B. B.
Building is great. Looks lovely.
Bar looks like a social club venue. Let the place right down.
Seats wear tiny with no leg room
S. M.
The seats! The seats! Front seats of upper circle. Utter torture. Suitable for about an 8 year old.
As a big Elvis fan, if he is found to still be alive and you manage to book him, I might return.
Otherwise the leg pain and potential DVT means 'never again'.
A. M.
Went to see Sibling Rivalry here and had some great seats in the stalls near the exit to the bar. Super views of the stage. Near to the toilets to which was great for the break. However, the seats are a little small which could be uncomfortable to those with s bigger behind. I have a reasonable rump (female size 18 bottoms) and it was awkward to get seated but comfortable once settled.
The theatre had such great character and was incredible to be in. The bar is ok but it does need a little injection of cash to modernise it but it's charming.
m. c.
Lovely place, drinks not too badly priced and they have a tuck shop and hot chocolate....Great for the winter nights!
G. S.
First time in 20 years I have been to a pantomime and I have to say it was brilliant. Laughed from start to finish. Highly recommend.
L. C.
Lovely theatre and a fantastic panto. Beautiful building with so much character. Love it!
c. y.
Spent the morning on a tour of the theatre. Was really informative and the guys doing the tour were great would recommend it to anyone interested in the theatre
D. O.
Gorgeous Grade 1 listed theatre in the heart of Newcastle. Steeped in history and stories of the past and present.
A. T.
Went to the Panto today. Best Panto ever. So funny and great trip out for all the family.
A. s.
Great old theatre, only issues I had was the seating was a bit cramped but I still enjoyed my evening
T. J.
I went to see Circus Biserk at the Theatre. The performance was old fashioned Circus Acts with a modern twist. At points it was stunning. It had me on the edge of my seat!
The Theatre staff where friendly and helpful. The Theatre looks great inside. The only thing that let it down a little in my opinion was lack of toliet facilities. And the toliets that existed where very dated.
J. k. (.
Fantastic.......... we had a great time at the panto watching snow white and the seven dwarfs, great fun for the kids and adults too, cast was hilarious we really enjoyed the ad libbing. A beautiful Victorian play house maybe in need of a little restoration but staff really friendly helpful we'd definitely go back, ooo you can take your own sweeties and they sell beer which you can take into the theatre
S. L.
Excellent night watching Gary Barlow. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. Also very organised and efficient. Lovely building too! Thank you.
O. A.
A lovely little venue. Perfect for watching stand up. Joe Lycett felt like he was in my front room.
Bar services is quick but as you can imagine they do get very busy. If you want a drink during interval then pre order.
C. W.
Such a Lovely Theatre...Been here a few times and the decor and the architecture is simply beautiful...Always feel a bit cold in here to be honest but the atmosphere is second to none when theres a show on...I love the fact you have an aisl down the middle of the seats for easy access to your seats and the Theatre caters really well for disabled people...Prices arnt too bad at the bar at nearly 5 pound a pint which isnt too bad for the Heart of Newcastle...Just a Goodnight out with nice people you cant ask for better than that...
L. H.
A beautiful theatre very, well kept and lovingly looked after. Some of the seats especially row E 18 I think this chair could do with re padding. But all in all a very nice theatre.
K. R.
Took my little boy to see Bing Live it was brilliant the staff were lovely and I was amazed at how beautiful it was inside. It's quite deceiving in size because it looks tiny from the outside but it's HUGE once you get inside. We had a fab afternoon and have already booked tickets for two more shows
L. C.
Lovely venue and fabulous show ‘The Crooners’ we sang and laughed all the way through the show! We would highly recommend👍
D. I.
Great Venue but needs a little tlc . Looks very shabby in Upper bar areas . Huge leg room so an added bonus .
L. B.
I'm disabled and use a scooter to get around. The staff were fantastic ensuring the access to our seats was clear and ensured we were sat comfortably. The whole place that we could see was very clean and tidy. Staff came round at regular intervals clearing any rubbish the customers had from their drinks. The price of my coffee was very reasonable and very hot. There were plenty of staff on hand to answer any questions people had and were all very pleasant and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The actual show was amazing and Nina Conti entertained us for nearly 2 hours of continuous laughter we will definitely be going to see her next tour and looking into going to further shows at the theatre.
K. A.
Absolutely great, Sarah Milican on her Bobby Dazler tour, well organised event and Sarah was AMAZING, highly recommended.
M. B.
Fabulous theatre .Great show last night .Songs n laughter best night out in a while !!!
K. O.
Proper ancient theatre hidden in what looks like a large terraced house. The seats are a little small and cramped but this is usual with a theatre of this age. It has a bar with a decent selection of drinks which is all you need really.
I. w.
Lovely place. Thanks for keeping this little theatre going.
J. d.
The theatre is lovely and the staff are friendly and very helpful - overall a great night - only thing is the leg room if you have seats in row A on the circles balcony it is so small its painful to sit for long. Legroom looked better on the row behind.Shame for such a beautiful building - great for kids to sit there but not adults.
N. L.
I love this old historical building. It does show many signs of wear, but has such a fabulous history and the theatre area itself is beautiful. The pantomime we saw today was fantastic, brilliant atmosphere and amazing 3D affects (we were all given the special glasses). Loved it
A. S.
Gorgeous theatre, well worth a visit for the auditorium itself.
Saw Austentatious there and it fitted like a glove
A. A.
Great old theatre but if you have back or hip issues like me, take a cushion for comfort. I remembered this time and it made a huge difference. Accessible toilet at the back of the stalls looks like it's had a recent refurbishment. Bright and clean with plenty space.
Staff are lovely and helpful as always.
R. R.
This is such a lovely theatre. The building itself was beautiful. We went to see this year's pantomime, sleeping beauty, it was spectacular. The 3D effects were incredible, I've never seen anything like that in a local pantomime. The bar and toilets could do with a little updating but a lovely place!
c. M.
Beautiful venue, safe & covid secure. Great performance from Jinx Monsoon & Major Scales. Hilariously funny and uplifting. Let's support getting back to live theatres once more
A. B.
Saw Sarah Milligan excellent. Show was great. Theatre is lovely but seats difficult to get out of if you have disabilities. But decoration beautiful.
j. b.
Lovely old theatre with loads of charm and wonderful interior . Have now seen Sarah Millican 3 times here - and think she gets ruder😂 . It gets really warm so there's always a lot of programmes being used as fans and you sometimes need to go up or down a level for loos. Bar downstairs. Decent legroom and pretty comfy seats. Seems to get different kinds of acts to Theatre Royal which is no bad thing.
L. J.
We cannot praise the staff enough. We've just been to see sleeping beauty with our 3 year old granddaughter and not only was it an amazing show the staff were out of this world. They made a lovely outing very special with how kind, friendly and attentive they were. Very well done to you all and I will definitely return. Thank you all and Merry Christmas x
P. W.
Great panto
{oh no it wasn't}
Oh Yes It Was!!!
H. M.
Impromptu visit, booked at the last minute. Box office staff very helpful & efficient. Lovely old theatre, iconic building & interior. Needless to say the performance of "Rent" was outstanding too.
S. M.
It's Old School entertainment, you get all the character of the 1900's, unfortunately at 2018 prices. Well worth going as it has a intermit atmosphere.
J. W.
Fabulous theatre . Really deserves some lottery grants to keep it running . Beautiful historic venue . Great show too
h. g.
What a brilliant couple of hours we've just had watching sleeping beauty. I've not been to a panto before and bought the tickets for my granddaughter and myself for Xmas, wasn't particularly looking forward to it but was very, very pleasantly surprised. Have already made up my mind that I'll be there again at Easter and Xmas 2022
p. s.
What a wonderful building.
We went for a behind the scenes tour, only £6.00 brilliant.
It lasted 90 minutes. Wonderful volunteers that know what they are talking about. You get to see behind the curtains. Really worth doing.
Definitely booking to see a show when we are aloud.
A. J.
had an absolute fantastic time to see beauty and the beast.
N. K.
Sooo beautiful. I've attended events and been lucky enough to work at events here. Breathtaking everytime
J.
Great behind the scenes tour - well worth a visit!
S. B.
Went to see Michael Palin. Beautiful historical theatre. Was easy to check in with tickets and get to seats despite it being so busy and all the seats being full.
A. I.
Great day out, panto was fun for all ages. 3D was fab. Felt safe. Please support the panto, the actors put so much into ensuring you have a great time... Use it or lose it.
L. F.
Lovely old theatre in the city centre - well worth a visit. Unfortunately when I went we were still in partial lockdown, so capacity was very restricted...hence can't comment on the acoustics or atmosphere as it wouldn't be representative.
Great friendly staff too
D. L.
Love it!Haven't been for years!Great show!excellent!
P. S.
Absolutely amazing show. We had issues with our seating and after speaking to the ushers we were given seats in the box with the theatre director. Amazing view of the stage and performance and very generous if his to give up the seats. Will definitely be returning here
E. F.
The shows are great, and the theatre is beautiful. However the seats are so uncomfortable. The padding has completely gone in some and they're rather narrow too. Not much leg room either but lucky for me I'm only short. I'll definitely go and see more shows there but I hope they get funds to refurb the seats! The ice cream is tasty and the staff friendly.
L. G.
Fantastic theatre, well known by our family as my Dad was a well loved, well known member of the Amateur Operatic group for a good number of years. Now we don't have him my Mam is well remembered by the group going out with them whenever they've had meals. A good selection of shows on here making it a good place for the Theatre Royal to compete with. Handy for Metro and railway stations, also not far from buses.
Easiest way to keep track of when which shows are on is to look up on net on either computer or by phone. All dates and prices provided that way.
A. D.
Visited on Sunday for jack and the beanstalk panto, it was amazing we felt safe and well looked after, the show and cast were great as usual. we were lucky to be in front row and my little boy who is 2 danced the whole time he loved it and got a wave from the cast. Can’t gir Christmas 2021 panto.
D. R.
Great show from Leah Bell,s acting company - The Cinder Path . Great atmosphere, came to see a friend who was in the cast, really enjoyed the night.Leah Bell was very entertaining.Great Crac ! Great to have a night in the toon !
g. c.
A brilliant night watching Genesis tribute band The Musical Box, roll back the years 😄👍
K. B.
Wonderful theater, great for any show, seats are not comfortable for those over 6ft
S. U.
Nice old fashioned concert hall. Staff are friendly, service excellent. Worth a visit. Just see who's on.
c. l.
Paul mort live show Newcastle Tyne theatre opera house
K. F.
Excellent spot for a night out. We went to see a comedy gig and were directed to the floor out seats were on. The car on the floor bad prompt service and pleasant staff. I loved the genuine Victorian decor, fittings and fixtures. I thought they added to the charm of the place.
Staff were friendly and very helpful.
A. F.
Went to see 'Sleeping Beauty' and had an excellent time. Excellent acting and very well staged in a quite magnificent building. We'll worth going.
H. W.
Lovely old building
Staff very pleasant
S. H.
We didn't have tickets, and turned up on the night to see a show. The box office staff were fantastic and so helpful in helping us secure the best remaining seats. The other staff, were really friendly and kind, very impressed. (the downstairs disabled loo needed a jolly good clean however!)
W. M.
Brilliant feel good night seeing Sarah Millican on Bobby Dazzler tour. So funny. Love the Tyne Theatre.
E. A.
Sound of Music was a fantastic show, an amateur production worthy of professional status. Could be a success on the London stage.
B. H.
Been to see Some Mother's do have them. Excellent show but such a shame more people were not there
M. G.
Went to see Circus of Horrors. Great theatre nice comfy seats and good view even from row S
A. C.
A fabulous theatre... all plaster work and gold leaf... the auditorium is stunning. Saw the panto - snow white and the 7 dwarfs. And it was fab. The right mix of innuendo, contemporary references, local humour and proper panto slapstick. Great to see Victorian theatre engineering working.
The only draw back are the front of house facilities... dated and probably in need of refurbishment. But you go to see a show not a toilet and for the entertainment not the bar.
J. G.
Great historic venue. We enjoy filming here several times a year.
m. b.
Love the Tyne Theatre. The staff are friendly and the shows are amazing.
J. C.
Lots of staff who were friendly & helpful. Didn't have to wait very long for a drink. Quaint lovely theatre. Great show but the sound quality wasn't great and I was freezing cold all night. I only warmed up slightly when we all got up to dance.
D. I.
Great little theatre. Most seats have good views. Seats very tight.
J. M.
First visit. Impressed. Lovely old theatre. Lots of helpful friendly staff. Was seated in the upper circle which had a great view, and looking around I'd say all seats had a good veiw. A grand theatre doing a grand job for which it was designed. Recommend a visit.
L. C.
Went to see Gary Barlow. Absolutely fantastic
M. H.
The Tyne theatre is a Grade I listed Victorian theatre house, only 1 of 10 in the entire country. Absolutely beautiful and vintage, you can experience the history as you walk in and around the place retaining as much Victorian fixtures fixings as possible. Really smiley and friendly staff, you know your in for a great night out! The main theatre is incredibly ornate and regal looking, it feels special being in there, really adding to the atmosphere of the performance you are seeing. A real privilege to visit!
W. A.
The show (In the Night Garden Live) was great. The kids loved it, some of the adults loved it. However, the place was very hot even before the show started, was little in the way of space (Seating etc) and the organisation of keeping the queue flowing as everyone came through the doors was really poor. Allowing groups of people to hover around in the lobby, at the bottom of the stairs instead of having somewhere to move the on to. Overall it was an OK experience. Would go back, but would take a fan.
D. B.
Fabulous show. Great seats, good facilities all round and very friendly staff.
W. M.
What a beautiful theater, our first visit and what a great experience. Stepping into the stalls is like journeying back in time. The decor and attention to detail is still beautifully maintained. We saw, Foil, Arms and hog which was wonderful from beginning to end.
C. C.
Really nice theatre, not too big. Ed Byrne was fantastic. Bars availavle on pretty much every level, wasn't bad at all getting served. Minimum £5 spend on card but they do take contactless
Only reason it lost a star is for the leg-room (seated in grand circle, I was touching the seat in front even when turned slightly side on). I'm 6'4" but I think anyone over 6' would struggle.
Otherwise no complaints. Would recommend
G. F.
Have enjoyed a lot of comedy here in the past few years. A beautiful old theatre, but lack of leg room is a real issue. Some theatres have now returned to the system where drinks cannot to be brought into the auditorium. This would be a great move as people are constantly up and down to go to the toilet because they've had too much alcohol. This nterrupts a show you've paid quite a bit to see.
J. K.
Visited Tyne Theatre for a performance of "Into the Woods" by an amateur company, MD Jenni Watson. The production was absolutely EXCELLENT!! Cold easily have been a professional company performing . Was very, very impressed by everyone involved & the set which worked very well . The production was slick & the singers/actors didn't put a foot wrong. And they were ably supported by a very competent orchestra. Most enjoyable!
As a disabled person, the theatre itself was accessible & comfortable & parking wasn't an issue.
S. Q. (. Q.
The old girl is starting to show her age a little, the seats are on the smallish side and she's a bit shabby around the edges, but the bar has a good selection of drinks at reasonable prices, staff are very helpful, atmosphere is great and there is a great range of shows to pick from. Something for everyone and great price for families.
J.
Lovely old theatre but rather in need of a make over. The chairs are extremely uncomfortable, they are not designed for modern audiences as they are small and crammed together with no leg room. It makes it difficult to enjoy a show when you are in pain because your knees are embedded into the seat in front of you!
R. S.
So cold! I get it's an old building but having to sit with coats over you isn't great. Seating uncomfortable also. Not sure if it's to do with the age of the building but it needs some TLC. Even little things like minimum spend at the bar, just seems like it can't handle the amount of people that attend. However, the show itself we attended was great!
S. F. (. S.
We went to see Elmer. I thought £15 plus booking fee for toddlers was rather steep for a 50 minute show. Maybe a cheaper ticket price for the wee ones ( ours is only 20 months old and he fell asleep halfway through). Otherwise the building is lovely but I think they may have had bums on seats if he prices hadn't been so steep instead of playing to about 6 rows of children and parents. Quite disappointed on this occasion.
S. D.
Been here many times. They hosted my daughters ballet performances many times. They place is a thing of natural beuty and will continue to be. They have many shows on from many different performances of different tastes. Never disappoints and they always strive to help everyone enjoy themselves.
L. W.
Fabulous. Great venue. Superb staff. Great organisation around the bar when it gets busy. Nish Kumar for PM. :) Maybe
A. J.
Beautiful venue for all types of stage shows. Great deco and the seats are comfy. Bar has a good selection of drinks, however the layout of the bar could be better, due to barriers that divide seating areas causing obstruction when trying to get to the bar and toilets.
J. D.
Great experience, very cosy and quaint opera house. A touch on the warm side but that's understandable, the pole that obstructs the view in certain seats are actually fairly hard to ignore tho, bear that in mind. But would recommend.
a. h.
A really nice venue, not much to look at from the outside but the interior is lovely and very well maintained, its obviously had a lot spent on it.
Parking is easy also, we used the Grange multi storey its free after 5pm.
G. W. (.
Went to see Sarah Millican and the place was packed. Old seats got uncomfortable after a short while and the place also got rather warm quite quickly. Had a good view of the stage and everything was well organized with plenty of staff if you had any questions.
M. H.
We went to see Dirty Dusting there a week ago today. Wonderful atmospheric theatre full of charm. Great bar staff and loos
Show was fab too. Looking forward to my next visit. Once again our Toon has it all!!!
A. D.
Beautiful place, car park nearby, central location, stage door in a great place, and great choice of things to see.
Only slight problem was incredible narrow knee room (first level centre). My 6ft 2 husband had to sit to the side as best he could
A. D.
Great facilities, including a buggy park for the kids show we went to recently. Only reason I took a star off was that we had to be bag searched on the way in "for the usual - weapons and alcohol". This was a lunchtime show for children based on the Julia Donaldson book series, not a late - night comedy show! Surely a little judgement? It caused massive queues out of the door and onto the pavement, full of restless children that parents were having to control next to a main city centre road. Other than that, it was excellent!
J. S.
Just been this evening to see The Tyne theatre productions version of Guys & Dolls. I have to say it is the best amateur production I have ever seen. The cast all had fab voices and the acting was great. Some really strong characters in there well done to you all!!
l. b.
Took my Grandaughter to see Cinderella (her first panto) at 9 Yr old she was full of questions about the theatres age and history. She loved the performance and asked if I'd take her again next year well worth the money tho I will try and get seats at front of the Grand Circle as we were at the back and she had to use a cushion to sit on in order to see over the heads of other people all in all a great experience for her (and Grandma)
R. C.
Always has big names and acts. Clean and pleasant yet Ageing venue. Bar prices are reasonable but Not all bars take card, which is a bit frustrating particularly on packed out gigs. Can get stuffy particularly on warm days/nights.
M. M.
I visited this place to watch common wealth program. Very beautiful place. There is a bar where you can get drinks and snacks. Toilets are small, so during break there will be a queue. Some of the seating arrangements are far away to the corner. There is not much leg space. Overall it was a very good experience.
N. M.
Some mother's do have them was absolutely wonderful, first class
R. C.
Lovely venue, great atmosphere and original features but, a 15minute queue for the toilet during an interval is not fantastic. One was out of service but 3 on the bar area wouldn't have been enough even if all were functioning.
B. W. I.
We did the heritage tour around the theatre, it was great, very informative. The 2 guides were very good, Phil and Martin. Definitely worth doing if you get the chance, an insight behind the scenes.
L. G.
Beautiful place, loved by all those who appreciate good music+shows. My Dad was in the operatic society for long enough taking parts in various musicals, operettas both here and the Theatre Royal. I sang with him in shows in ameteur operatics turning now to singing folk music in clubs. This is a great pla e to go to enjoy music.
j. a.
Great venue with good views of the stage all round
C. H.
It was my first time there. Went to see The Red Hot Chilli Pipers. It was fantastic.
M. B.
Recently saw Joe Lycett, a great night. Beautiful building however the leg room wasn't great in our seats, which I appreciate from the age of the building, but it would have been nice to be informed when booking the seats.
Helpful, friendly staff.
A. R.
Great atmosphere, beautiful building, plenty of knee room for 5'4 but not for 6'4. I'm a size 18 and butt room on seats was OK. No drinks machines, only a bar but can preorder drinks for interval. No air con.
M. F.
Beautiful old theatre Good old slapstick comedy Pantomime,Staff most helpful,All COVID rules adhered too ,Well worth a visit ,
H. Y. C.
Been their once for the Hypnosis live show, it was to me, a comedy. It was a fun night to be in the theater and the light atmosphere helps to relax from a day of long hours work. Yet, I doubt about the quality of food there.
L. E.
A lovely historic theatre. Surprisingly ample leg room considering the age of the building (better than the theatre royal and city hall). Downside to a building of this age is that it is unbearably hot in a heatwave but I guess aircon is unlikely on a listed building and would also cost a small fortune to run. If they were enterprising they should sell fans in the foyer at the start and at the interval with the ice cream (lovely Doddington) and at the bars. I've seen some great comedy here over the years!
J. E.
Went to see Chris Ramsey, great show! Venue is the same it has been for ages, good with a need of a touch up and no good if you are over 5 foot 10 and are sitting in the higher level seats.
D. B.
Very beautiful place to see a show. I actually saw a live podcast here, so I didn't need a god view, but I got one anyway. The seats were decent and the floor was raked to give a good view.
S. D.
Beautiful theatre, lovely night, wonderful Ballet, what more can you ask for.
S. R.
Fantastic show for preschoolers. Prams taken into accommodation, very helpful staff, great atmosphere for show, my child loved seeing her hero Bing brought to life on the Tyne Theatres stage. Photo Included was her first reaction to Bing on stage. She couldn't believe it
R. C.
A beautiful old theatre in the heart of Newcastle that attracts unusual as well as mainstream acts. Lovely old Victorian decor and a comforting old world feel to the place.
There's a nice bar for the interval too!
J. Y.
Beautiful theatre, the staff are so friendly and helpful, even coming round during the interval asking if everything was ok and were we enjoying the ballet.
It's a small theatre so it feels quite intimate, it was a perfect evening.
A. J.
Was at the Tyne theatre watching the performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Lovely theatre.my seat was classed as restricted view but 2 rows from the front be it at the end of the row, was an amazing view. Good access for all. Visited here several times before. Plenty close by parking too
A. S.
Fantastic little venue for lectures, I attended the lecture on the psychology of serial killers and the placement of every single seat is in perfect, full view of the stage. Love it's authentic look that has been kept over the years
I. C.
Myself and my daughter's went to see Snow White and Seven Dwarfs on 17th December. It was a fantastic production and I haven't laughed as much in years. Keep up the excellent work and roll on Cinderella in 2018
J. G.
A good place to watch live comedy Jack Dee lastnight 👍
Seat was not comfortable though.
C.
In all honesty it could do with a major upgrade but it is spacious, good bar with fair prices, and tickets are much cheaper than other venues. Sadly there is hardly any interesting shows on here but if there is something decent on I would much rather go here than the overpriced Theatre Royal.
R. P.
We went to see sleeping beauty panto and it was great I don't know who loved it more the adults or the kids
S. G.
Fantasic place to visit friendly staff great bad and amazing mood and feel of the theatre itself. Seats could do with abit of padding tho.
S. K.
Great little theatre , close up and intimate which creates a great atmosphere.
K. W.
If you haven't been to see the panto this year. Their are still tickets available and my family would highly recommend it. They all had a wonderful time and said that it was the best one that they have been too.
A. G.
Nice venue with a good variety of drinks and snacks. Only downside for my visit was that the seats are quite narrow so I felt like I was practically sitting on the person next to me.
D. D.
First time at Tyne Theatre really enjoyed it. Lovely old theatre.
p. m.
Great old theatre, loved it. Absoluely beautiful sitting and looking around at the decor. Keep support these places you won't get them back when there gone.
P. B.
Fantastic experience throughly enjoyed the Cinderella performance this evening, Button was so funny and engagingly a true Gem of talent in a Northern Theatre, will be booking the Panto again next year without a doubt.
P. B.
Really lovely old theater. We could not take photos. The act was 3 irish lads and they werevery funny. They had a girl(I think called Helen) who signed the whole show for those who were deaf. She was amazing. They picked people out of the audience and one chap named Oliver realy played the part with them. It was near the end of the show when they took his wallet for a joke that that they found out he was a policeman. Lol they could not believe it. I think he made a good show even better
C. P.
Absolutely amazing Panto again this year. Fabulous singers, and brilliant comedy from start to finish.
K. G.
Beautiful Theatre, nice drink prices, cool bar staff, great sound system and completely spotless which I know is a strange thing to say but I've never been anywhere so clean! Hope to visit again soon.
S. S.
I suspect the review will vary depending on what you go to see, however I had a lovely time. Nice building friendly staff.
A. B.
Lovely architectural old style theatre. The seating allows good viewing. My only complaint would be the seats are a touch on the narrow side.
S. L.
Great gig but the place really needs a makeover. Loos are awful, it's very damp and the general decor is just very poor. £27.50 for just over 1 hour gig is a bit steep per person but ifbit pays for refurb... let's hope so
E. T.
Lovely performance we went to see Aladdin Seats are not as bad as described in some reviews ,music was nice,we left teather with happy faces just please do not let Jasmine sing.
I. M. G.
Traditional theatre just as you'd expect
S. M.
A Great pantomime a great show
C. F.
Beautiful theatre, traditional layout, seats could do with a little bit more padding. Great Ballet. Busy bar and rest area.
D. B.
A great looking theatre with a nice big bar and refreshment area. Lots of architecture to appreciate inside. Very comfortable and nice range of snacks. Would visit again.
A. C.
Fabulous performance of Aida by Russian State Opera. On time. Beautiful theatre. Parking just behind it. Seats are old and do with a little padding!
g. s.
One of the best theatres in Newcastle, it has Character and goes back years and years. Would love to have seen it in its hayday. Pleased it's still open. Try to support it, it would be sad if it goes.
L. J.
Nice intimate venue but could do with a bit of updating & it was feeezing!
N. H.
Excellent show, helpful staff, evening marred by latecomers who were slightly intoxicated constantly needing the ladies. Not that this detracted from the entertainment. A lovely venue with easy access to public transport.
H.
Easy to find, it's an old theatre so seats are old and well used, there's no air conditioning but we did go on the hottest night of the year so I'm guessing it's not usually an issue
A. H.
The Swan Lake Ballet performed by the Russian State Ballet was stunning. The Opera House was the perfect location; it is steeped in history and commands a wonderful atmosphere.
M. J.
The best pantomime I seen in years 😃🤩🤣 Spectacular effects, costumes, actors and jokes appropriate to the small audience 😍
I think Jakub (6 years old) was the loudest child in the audience screaming 'Behind You' lol Xxx
Perfect night with little fella ❤
C. S.
Beautiful theatre, a bit cramped but given it's age there isnt anything you can do about that. Fantastic choice of shows. Only downside is I found some of the staff unhelpful.
C. W.
Took our toddler to see Zog! He loved it, we all did! Love how intimate this theatre is, and you can feel the history of the place! :)
D. A.
Highly recommend going to see sleeping beauty . Was a fantastic show ..you won't be disappointed
H. B.
I've taking my daughter to see a few different performance's here. Staff are helpful and the venue is good for little ones. All productions have been great
A. C.
Friendly staff, very helpful and good for the kids. When to see Bing with the family and had a great time. There is a good size bar and a small kiosk.
C. P.
Brilliant night at Aladdin! 😀 Lovely cosy theatre which gives ia really good view of the stage. Efficient bar service at the interval. A really good value night.
D.
Really enjoyed my visits to this theatre. Great atmosphere and quality acoustics. Just as important, the seating is very acceptable for tall people.
K. S.
Excellent place to watch these 2 😁😁
M. H.
Good range of acts and friendly staff both front of house and in bar. Great atmosphere. Good to be able to take drinks into auditorium.
E.
Went to Tyne theatre last night and it's a beautiful place but I have to say a special thank you to the staff who are second to none, nothing is too much trouble and every one of them from the door staff, bar staff and the guys showing us to our seats are perfect , a special mention to Joyce who was really helpful when I rang the theatre and jean who we had a lovely chat with last night
M. W.
Lovely theatre with friendly and polite staff.
J. S.
Found free Parking a few minutes away. Theatre is traditional with the upstairs seating a bit cramped but all part of the heritage and more or less everyone had an intimate view of stage.
T. K.
Lovely looking venue. Leg room is minimal though so be careful if you're tall, it could be a bit uncomfortable. Staff were lovely though
R. H.
Amazing show with great sight lines, beautiful ornate grade 1 listed building
S. A.
Cozy Victorian theatre but an absolute nightmare to find any nearby parking. .. 😢😢😢 Disabled patrons may find it easier to park at Central station and get a taxi to the theatre but at £8 for parking and £4.50 for the taxi, it makes for an expensive evening.
Will probably go in by Metro next time to cut the parking cost.
P. G.
Quaint, and more personal than theatre royal. Very friendly.
S. W.
It is what it is, an old, quite rundown theatre. Drinks were warm, toilets didn't work (Gents anyway) but the staff were pleasant, helpful and we still had a great night!
S. F.
Wonderful entertainment venue with a long heritage. The prices in the bar are reasonable and there's a decent selection of locally brewed beers.
B. W.
Enjoyable but in dire need of some TLC and/or restoration.
We were in Upper circle, my wife has mobility problems and the lack of a lift proved quite difficult!
J. T.
1st time I had been there so a bit surreal really. As it was also the 1st time I had seen somebody giving a talk about a book. It WAS very good I did enjoy it just a bit different which is always good.
K. R.
Lovely old Victorian theatre .. saw the Russian ballet performance of The Nutcracker.. average performance experience ! As lead male dancer over stretched and stumbled several times on his solo dances ..shame
E. W.
Absolutely beautiful venue however if buying a seat with restricted leg room it is very tight and means there is a pole in front of you
B. B.
Lots of history to this place, we've found staff really helpful. It does need updating and money spent on it but still puts on good shows and has a great atmosphere when it's packed
L. W.
One of the most beautiful theatres in the country. One can only assume that the tightwads who've denied its funding have never visited.
J.
Great venue! Have been a few times and the view of the stage from the Gods is better and more comfortable that the theatre royal in my opinion.
C. P.
Beautiful venue. Polite, friendly staff.
B. B.
Never been here in years ,went to see Cinderella and it was excellent buttons so funny as well as the rest of the cast and Cinderella obviously fancied my cos I am like lush .
J. S.
Grand old Opera House, still going strong
m.
It was fantastic seeing amanda palmer. Also the staff were very helpful and it was a comfortable experience, which is rare for me with my autism. So grateful to this place.
J. S.
Great show tonight - Rebecca Ferguson was fantastic. This venue is an old theater with bags of character with a vast array of different shows.
C. S.
Lovely place to see a show. Seats are smallish but can't complain too much. Its old fashioned and that's how it should be.
J. W.
Seats a little cramped as we are long legged, but the age of the theatre dictates this. Otherwise friendly and we had an enjoyable night Thank you
D. B.
Great venue however on the down side some of the seats are well overdue refurbishment. Still a lovely old theatre
s.
We have recently been to see the Christmas panto Aladdin it was fantastic really aimed for the kids but some little adult treats too
M. C.
Canny venue great show, could do with a few more acts added
R. C.
Lovely place, location and size but seats are quite uncomfortable
L. W.
Confused but disappointed but was o.k Bobby Davro show not Peter Pan really like the pantos here but wish they would bring back the old cast.Bobby Davro was hilarious but the children were left baffled by the jokes the Peter Pan story was not told properly which left the kids baffled too much adult and celebrity and not enough kids panto at 118 pounds for 6 tickets a costly day out.
J. M.
Very modest from the outside but a real gem of a theatre inside
D. M.
If you have children/grandchildren it's definitely worth going to the Tyne Theatre pantomimes, Christmas or Easter. Doesn't matter how old you are you'll enjoy it, unless you're related to Victor Meldrew.
L. S.
A stunning theatre with a great mix of productions. My only gripe is that the legroom is somewhat limited but this is not unusual in these sort of venues.
M. W.
We came to see Beauty and the Beast was a fantastuc evening.... Both kids and adults loved the show.... Shame the cast won't be here next yr..... It will not be the same at christmas.....
l. p.
Another fabulous show at the Tyne theatre and opera House. They work really hard to make sure you are safe
L. M.
It was a good show. Staff were friendly. Auditorium was a little shabby. But it adds to the mood. Refreshments were reasonably priced
H. F.

J. M.
The Unthanks were wonderful, great venue.
W. L.
Nice venue getting old and needs some money spending. It is a voluntary theatre so needs our support. Great shows
D. B.
The theatre is tired looking but it didn't distract from the show seats fairly comfortable with plenty of leg room
A. B.
Loved it nice time out with my little family
M. M.
Lovely old place, needs some tlc though
P. A.
Old fashioned style but comfortable. Good shows. Pity we went on the hottest day of the year.

L. W.
Cosy little local theatre. Two bars on site.
j.
Saw the excellent Ed Byrne, the atmosphere always seems better here for comedy gigs than the city hall.
T. M.
My first visit and it was a very nice old theatre with reasonably priced drinks. The staff are very helpful and friendly
T. P.
Lovely theatre but for a 6.2ft person the leg room is not the best, but I guess it never is at theatres.
R. H.
Good prices for drinks. Lovely historic building.
S. J.
Love this theatre as a venue more leg room than city hall and theater royal and the staff are lovely
C. R.

K. S.
Excellent show. Chris Cross and Martin Daniels were brilliant. Tyne theatre is a nice place
S. M.
Great theatre but my oh my the leg room and uncomfortable seats
