Reviews of The Mill at Sonning
H. M.
Love the relaxed atmosphere at this little theatre. Excellent non-fussy buffet, with polite and attentive young waiting staff. First rate acting in the Whodunnit play. Great to be able to park on site and have a bar for drinks before/after too. An excellent 'treat' outing with friends/family.
c. h.
The buffet was great plenty of choice I had the beaf pie and wife had chicken curry all very nice.
And the show was great House on Cold hill.
Very interesting end

We had a beautiful experience here at The Mill at Sonning, we had an excellent, very tasty lunch and then watched a superb play in the theatre. Highly recommended.

Wow the best theatre production I have been to . Incredible , professional acting , great plot and wonderful effects . Second time to Sonning Mill , never disappointed . Food and service also amazing .
G. B.
Excellent play ‘Barefoot in the Park’ and very good lunch included. Recommended.
M. K. G.
1st time to visit the staff were very helpful and polite. The food choice was excellent. The theatre production team and actors were great. Some of the seating means you are watching from behind the stage. Next time we will make sure we have other seats.

We have been visiting the Mill on and off for a few years. The recent renovations have made what was a lovely place even better. The tickets may seem expensive but what you get for your money is really unbelievable. The food is excellent and the performances are always brilliantly performed. Visit, you won't be disappointed!

Once again we were back at this charming and historic Grade II listed place of entertainment after a break of almost two years. The experience was enjoyable to watch Top Hat musical matinee with extremely well served and delicious buffet lunch. The service was great and staffs very helpful and efficient.
It’s well managed and well organised place. The car park is small but probably tight for the 215 seat theatre when fully sold. The road surface in the car park could do with some maintenance and remedial work - the potholes do get flooded though during the rainy season!
However, the management deserve congratulations on having such a wonderful team of staffs all round, especially in the restaurant and behind the bar. 👍👏

We were at the mill at Sonning for an immersive theatre piece - Still Life by Noel Coward.
We had dinner there as well.
The food was good.
The play was outstanding. It was performed in the bar area which was turned into a railway station cafe for the performance.
Beautifully performed

All nice, as usual. The box office willingly changed my side seats to central - couldn't do this on line as there were 3 seats left and booking 2 would leave a single. Funny Money good fun. Regret being told off for daring to walk on the few inches high carpeted stage rather than trample on seated audience and this tall man has always booked front seats to enjoy leg room - disappointed.

I am so shocked at the poor reviews fortunately the good ones stand out.
One saying, if you eat in good restaurants!
This will be disappointIng. This made me write a review.
I have visited Sonning around 4 times now and can not fault it. The food, the staff, the theatre itself and the price is amazing for what you get. The staff have always been lovely 🥰.
Yes, it’s not “The Ivy” for example, I too have been to top quality restaurants ! But, this is a theatre deal that is brilliant for the price.
Keep it up Sonning ! AMAZING

Haven't been here for several years & the food although ok is definitely not as it was. The so called skin on roast potatoes r more like new potatoes that have been boiled & tossed in oil. Not the least bit crispy like a toasties should be & only 1 type of potato offered. Show was very good as ever
P. S.
We took my son & daughter-in-law to the Mill to see Barefoot In The Park, a comedy by Neil Simon. We started with a delicious two-course meal & coffee(all included in the ticket price).
Then experienced some wonderful acting in a truly intimate setting of a working watermill.
Great experience 😁.
M. B.
Recently went to see Buddy Holly & the Cricketers. The meal was lovely and the show was wonderful. Being a great Buddy Holly fan I was amazed at how good it was. Best concert I have seen since the Searchers in the 1970s.
J. S.
Went on an organised trip from Devon. Beautiful area. Lovely setting by the river. Food very good. Staff very friendly. Tribute Frankie Vali band the East Coast Boys were excellent and their musicians. The theatre was unique. Approx 230 people in staged seating. Excellent view of the stage. Definitely worth a visit.
m. N.
Beautiful location and excellent facilities. Unique, very welcoming little venue for a upclose live experience.
V. C.
One of my favourite venues for music and plays.
Exceptional value for money.
M. W.
Had afternoon tea (at lunchtime). Very good value, food as good as ever here. Lovely setting, sat right by the river. Friendly and professional service.

Makes for an interesting night out. Not the easiest theatre venue to get to, by a long way. But one of the more beautiful, and in lovely, riverside surroundings.
The "Mill at Sonning Theatre" occupies some fine wooden buildings near the Thames at Sonning.
I have not yet experienced a performance there, but hope to do so in the coming year. We were simply looking for food and drink when we came across this charming location. Dining there was relatively expensive and the choices limited.
Dining next to the actual operating water mill was certainly different. Do spare time to look round the scenic gardens and riverside if you go there.
J. P.
Nice setting, food was a buffet, not bad. Would go again, lots of staff to assist. They do put lots of breaks in so you can buy more drinks.
S. B.
Highly recommended. Great service, especially for my elderly mum who has mobility issues. Staff really helpful . Thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, thank you
R. J.
Lived close to The Mill since 1987 and have promised ourselves a 'treat' to visit the theatre and restaurant. We booked to see Busman's Honeymoon and have a meal. Great night out with good food with friendly service from all the staff, not as expensive as we'd always thought and realise now we've 'wasted' the chance of a good night out for the last 30 years!!! Liked it enough that we've booked another night already.
B. S.
A luncheon (dinner) theatre is always a treat. Food is of ample supply in buffet style. The play 'Busman's Holiday ' has an intriguing plot and is excellently casted.
J. P.
A delicious pre-theatre hot meal in gorgeous surroundings followed by an hilarious farce called Funny Money in this beautiful intimate theatre, a wonderful birthday gift.
A. K.
I am completely in love with this beautiful venue. Fabulous show (Top Hat) , super helpful staff, fantastic food, absolutely stunning building....
P. L.
Went to see Top Hat singing and dancing, excellent performance
K. E.
Great day as usual at The Mill at Sonning, nice meal, excellent service, then we sat down for a good old fashioned farce, with a magnificent cast.
B. E. H.
Great lunch, helpful staff and fantastic production of the play "Funny Money". The Actors were wonderful
M. v. S.
Small country side theatre where you can get a good view regardless of where you are seating. That said, we went for a lunchtime Saturday showing, and my friend and I were one of four people under 60 in the whole venue. Not sure if it has a younger crowd at night. The production of the play was superb, and the actors surprisingly good considering this is such a small venue.
K. O.
An excellent experience, good staff and food, the chef even make a lovely vegan tart specially for us. The theatre and play were both intimate and enjoyable. If I could give more stars I would!
M. P.
Went here for a wake. It was lovely and the staff excellent. Food very good
L. P.
Beautiful setting and surroundings in The Mill. .Relaxed atmosphere. Delicious food and plenty of choice on the menu for buffet. . Warm welcom from the staff . Very well organised theatre. Bar prices very reasonable also. The Beatles Show was excellent also. A great experience and a fantastic evening out .
T. C.
Good value for money meal and show. Food has always been great. Comedy night something different to do. Service is good too.
k. l.
Really charming night out. Food but school dinners but very tasty. Staff all friendly. Theatre adorable. Love it there
T. G.
Very pleasant evening. Bit chaotic bar service at beginning but food well done and table service thereafter was attentive and friendly. Play was well done and good entertainment.
A. E.
Absolutely adore this dinner theatre. Amazing ambiance and all the actors did a fantastic production of Busman's Honeymoon! A must visit😆
L. C.
Always a great experience. Food is acceptable is limited choice but we go for the entertainment. Is a little cramped in seats.
M. P.
Self service buffet dinner, food was very good and the venue was beautiful, the cost of the theatre tickets include the food
N. A.
Lovely buffet and fab show (Top Hat).
V. W.
Fabulous evening watching The Zoots perform 60’s songs. Always a good night with this talented group!
D. C.
Though it was buffet style meal before the show, the food was surprisingly good with a variety of dishes on offer. Also plenty of staff at hand for service. Show was amazing, props to the magic acts. Overall, great evening, highly recommended and it doesn't blow the budget for date night!
C. C.
Went to see Top Hat. Really lovely evening. Self service food which was all very lovely. Lots of choice and plenty to eat. Staff were very attentive and helpful. Beautiful setting. Theatre is so very close to stage and feels very personal. Excellent cast and a really brilliant performance from all. Great energy and uplifting.
k.
Fantastic venue, food was very good and the theatre was very intimate, the play I was there for, Private Lives, was very good, the cast were brilliant!!
S. P.
An outing to the Mill is always enjoyable. The food is good, but at my last visit on 8th January it was particularly good. Again, the shows are always good, and it amazes me what can be done on the small stage. The performances in Top Hat were incredible and it seems wrong to pick out anyone in particular. Everyone played their part perfectly.
P. S.
Brilliant time seeing a Top Hat performance at this lovely theatre. Fabulous show with a hugely talented cast. The meal beforehand was very nicely cooked and presented with good choices available. Staff here are really friendly and helpful, it is clean and comfortable. Highly recommended, looking to book again very soon.
S. I.
Had dinner and a show here and absolutely loved it.
Bar downstairs is great and you could go anytime. Food was a buffet upstairs and good surroundings and great staff.
Really quaint and intimate theatre.
Highly recommend pre drinks, dinner and show!
J. G.
Lovely place to spend an evening watching a play or music show, food all included, venue small and intimate
C. C.
Beautiful place ,beautiful food, friendly staff, great shows, and it beats going to London.
C. H.
Dinner as part of a theatre/dinner package. Buffet style. Generous portions and excellent food. Attentive service. Strange layout and confusing going from room to room to find the buffet or toilets but it's understandable as the building is an unusual place. Atmospheric and fun night out.
P. E.
Enjoyed afternoon tea here....great selection! Nice to sit outside by the river as very dark inside!
J. W.
Nice ambience, play performance was to a good standard. Lovely venue. Food was very disappointing.
R. H.
Fantastic place to visit and the welcome we received was 1st class and the staff were so helpful and friendly We had a great evening and Buddy holly tribute band was a show i could watch over and over again fantastic show
D. B.
Nice evening out at the theatre. We watched Towards Zero which was a good show.
Lovely little place with good food and service.
J. B.
Took my parents and in-laws to watch Big girls don't cry. Could not have enjoyed themselves anymore. Staff, food, show and the whole place was awesome. Can't wait to go back
M. W.
Excellent food, great staff, pretty location, brilliant shows.
S. W.
Theatre was really great. We saw an Agatha Christie. But the buffet meal needs a little more work. As does the wine and drinks selection at the bar.
E. P. D.
Story time recommended for small children. Very engaging performance. Excellent drinks and snacks included as well as dressing up and some arts and crafts! The coffee is pretty good too!
A. W.
My husband and I had a great experience yesterday at The Mill. We had a lovely buffet meal, everything was very well organised and the staff very polite. We saw The House on Cold Hill which was very well acted albeit two members of the cast were sick and had to use two reserves at short notice who had to read from a script. It didnt spoil our experience, we had a smashing time.
E. M.
Lovely, cosy, aesthetically pleasing venue. Quirky as the floor undulates and the mill wheels are visible internally. Very well organised. Friendly and efficient staff. The food is a buffet, mandatory mask wearing and hand sanitising before helping yourself made for a comfortable and anxiety free experience, with table service for drinks and desserts and you return to your table for pre-booked drinks in the interval, transferring drinks to paper cups if you take your time with your wine. The food was delicious, gluten free and dairy free options available. I couldn't fault it. And as the theatre is small and the front rows' toes are practically touching the stage and props, it makes for a great experience. I would recommend and will return 😁
L. F.
After the trials and tribulations of getting through the pandemic this theatre has THE BEST SHOW EVER supported by a great 3 course dinner - staff were very accomodating and fun. Thank you for such an outstanding performance - well done to all. Brilliant evening.
c. s.
Delightful experience at small bijou theatre. Meal beforehand excellent. Helpful staff. Disabled friendly and accessible. Enjoyed My Fair Lady production
M. N.
Lovely, intimate theatre with well-raked seating, friendly staff, charming waterside setting and plenty of parking. Excellent meal. Allow plenty of time for journey as Sonning is a nasty bottleneck from all directions.
A.
Went for a friend's birthday bash...40+ of us. Venue is lovely and thry had a pretty full house. How the staff managed to serve all those drinks as they did was amazing. Hot buffet with a choice. I had the fish...very tasty. Coice of delicious desserts including cheese and biscuits (something you rarely see). The act was good too. All ran smoothly. A great night
A. W.
Brilliant lunch in great surroundings. Lovely production of Private Lives directed by Tam Williams. The dining room photograph by Johnny Fox
L. D.
God's waiting room but nice theatre and bar. Nice self service Sunday Lunch.
S. S.
I had a most enjoyable afternoon at the Mill ,we had afternoon tea which was delicious and then the play Brief Encounter was performed magnificently by wonderful actors in the bar and we were customers in the cafe . It was so well done and an absolute triumph. Thank you so much for a wonderful afternoon
s. b.
The food was a choice of 4 main courses served buffet style. I had the steak pie with various mixed veg. This pie was excellent although i wasn't keen on the veg. There was a good range of desserts served at the table . after the meal we listened to a band
C. M.
a very enjoyable evening. good food. staff were excellent and the show was v funny and brilliantly performed. Prices have gone up but this is still a great night out and worth the money.
L. O.
Beautiful place, I only had coffee so can’t talk about the food there
Place has a very nice atmosphere
S. V.
We saw a Ray Clooney farce Funny Money which was excellent with a nice dinner beforehand
A. R.
Excellent venue for dinner and a show. Car park needs some TLC especially as last night it rained, huge puddles in a dark car park on leaving, somewhat a safety issue.
V. c.
Good show Carpenters, lovely singer and songs, great backing by Rachel.Good choice at dinner. (wife has GF) they did well to serve busy dining room that was full in the time allocated. Very nice steak n kidney pie.
Nice helpful staff too. Seats are badly in need of replacing, wasn't keen on having to queue to go into dinner.. Reminded me of years ago at Pontins!!
But perhaps the covid rules didn't help.
Overall a nice night out.
P. G.
Loved the play in the Bar . Actors and production really good. The afternoon tea was lovely too. The only criticism was that the chairs were really uncomfortable to sit in, otherwise a great afternoon.
L. D.
Another fabulous evening! A super dinner menu, loads of choice, all delicious. An excellent live music show in a very safe auditorium. Friendly, courteous and efficient staff. Always a top class venue for a great evening!
D. A.
Lovely meal, and a great show. We saw Top Hat, which was brilliant. The staff were also excellent. Well done all round.
R. H.
A great take on an evening out. The dining experience combined with an after show theatre performance, whilst a delicious meal settles, is a perfect combination! I'd recommend this to anyone and I look forward to coming back. A huge thanks to the bar and waiting staff who were very helpful and organised.
C. J.
Great Subday afternoon out. Lovely lunch followed by amazing entertainment. Shout must go out to the manager who let us go in early as my companion had mobility issues.
K. S.
11out of 10. The food was as good as the musical.
Extremely well performed.
Will be watching the film on Wednesday BBC2 which I've seen before but will it still seem as good after seeing the live performance?
C. L.
This was an experience to remember. We were celebrating my daughter's birthday and my wife decided to book the Mill. We have had these dining experiences at The Mill before and it did not disappoint. Top Hat was absolutely breathtaking. A comedy and musical combined as one. The cast were fantastic. Singing to perfection. The audience including my family thoroughly enjoyed it. The meal was exquisite and catered for vegetarian and meat eaters alike. The vegetarian option which I had of Moussaka and the Xmas trimmings ie vegetables, roasties etc got us in the Xmas mood. The staff were extremely courteous and helpful. Safety was paramount during the time we were there. Including proof of being double jabbed, the use of face masks and hand sanitisers throughout the area. Gave us confidence that The Mill had everything covered. Thank you so much for a wonderful experience. Cannot wait for another excuse to visit the Mill. Happy Xmas to the team.
N. P.
Wonderful Alan Aykbourne play, Relatively Speaking, at the Mill today, the first production they've been able to run for many many months. The play was fantastic, funny and very well acted. The meal beforehand was delicious and served buffet style and proper tablecloths. All in all a lovely occasion in a beautiful location.
R. T.
Great evening! Interesting how the combined eating and theatre experience binds the theatregoers/diners together. Will definitely go again. My only cavil is that performances starting at 8.15 makes it difficult for those coming from further away, like London for instance. Dining could be a bit earlier surely!
A.
We saw Top Hat last night, a superb uplifting show, the cast were brilliant. The food was good as always, the staff lovely and friendly and attention to cleanliness in terms of covid was good.
C. F.
Always a great night of food and entertainment.
A. D.
As always a joy. My only criticism is the lack of gents loo on the restaurant. /. Auditorium floor.
C. R.
Great entertainment food and setting. Will be back.
G. W.
We have been going to The Mill since it’s opening back in the last century. We took a couple of pals for their first experience on Tuesday. Two into One the Ray Cooney farce was brilliant. Food was its usual excellent self and the attention to detail, customer service and friendliness shone through as usual.
C. M.
Amazing night watching ‘Still Life’ based on the movie Brief Encounter x amazing actors esp the waitress who played 3 parts and played the piano and sang x just amazing night and our A level drama student daughter just loved it too 😘
R. W.
Was there for a Wake , Place was Very Clean Tidy Helpful Staff .
D. C.
Excellent as always. We're so fortunate that everyone at The Mill and all their supporters worked so hard throughout the pandemic to keep this amazing place alive. It's great to be back again 😊🥂🍾
R. E.
Fantastic venue for watching live entertainment preceded by enjoying an excellent meal. The staff were all wonderful and very attentive.
B. F.
We visited today to see Relatively Speaking at the Matinee. It was brilliant. We had a delicious high quality meal and in our opinion The Mill is second to none and a great experience. So well organised and efficient. Its no easy job running a theatre in these COVID times but The Mill have nailed it. Brenda and Lees Fell.
R. C.
Enjoyed sitting outside at the Mill. Beautiful sandwiches for lunch. Friendly and accommodating staff who made sure that we were well looked after with dietary needs
R. N.
A bit pricy but the food is good and the theatre intimate
A. P.
Wonderful venue for a night out. Extremely well organised & caters for gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian too. Staff friendly & professional. Highly recommended.
R. C.
Great food and a great show- for ever in blue jeans. Great venue.
P. W.
Beautiful food, helpful friendly staff- very well run to keep people safe. Show was really funny and entertaining. Lovely evening.x
R. P.
Lovely character venue with restaurant and theatre all in one. The staff are good and the meal selection nice
The theatre is small and intimate making for a great night out.
L. D.
Very friendly and helpful staff, fabulous location, plenty of original wooden beams and a working water wheel to see inside whilst still feeling theatrical and relaxed by the use of shandelears and food lighting . The food was cordon bleu and tasted very good , we only ate the main and could have done with a slightly larger portion, however it would have been fine if we had had starters and puddings.
S. L.
Fabulous show - the highly recommended Guys and Dolls plus the usual hearty and efficient dining experience. The only (small/ tiny) comment this time is our plates were cold so the food cooled down far too quickly.
The staff were absolutely fabulous in helping my elderly father with a member of staff selecting his meal with him so that my mum and I could get on with choosing our own food from the buffet.
The whole experience is unhurried and truly enjoyable and, as topped with such a great, lively, colourful, highly talented show, was one of the best evenings I've had in ages.
J. B.
Excellent food, excellent show. Saw Top Hat last night, a highly professional show. West End quality. A great evening.
M. A.
Great food and good service before the show. The show Top Hat was amazing. Would highly recommend a visit to this wonderful small theatre. 🙂🙂
D. W.
Very welcoming and charming staff. Extremely tempting desserts!
C. N.
The Mill has always been a special place for us. I had my first visit 25 years ago & I always leave wishing I could be a part of the act.
The plays are exceptional, the set design stunning and the atmosphere is fantastic.
Things were a little different yesterday due to the covid restrictions, but it in no means spoiled my enjoyment of the evening, & I applaud all the staff for working hard to keep to restrictions & still making it a thoroughly enjoyable evening for all.
D. T.
Big mix up with drinks. Said 6X but it was not. Local beer which they should have said. We were happy with local. Be proud of it and be more confident and don't pretend it is something else!. We wanted shandy but got beer. Food ok. Fish and chips. Risotto Sausage&mash. Took rest of beer home! Nice setting.
T. A.
If you want a good meal in a lovely setting where the staff obviously take everyones safety seriously then I can highly recommend The Mill. The only slight downside is that the larger rooms with social distancing can feel a little empty, but that is hardly their fault! The menu is fairly short, but there should be something in there for nearly everyone - it is also online so you can check beforehand. I can highly recommend the steak which was cooked and seasoned perfectly, and I am told that the Stone Bass was also very good!
Best of all, they are carrying on with their own 'Eat out to help out' in October which meant our 3 course meal for 4 people was ridiculously good value for money. So 'Eat out to help out' and have a good meal for a great price!
a. b.
Food very good, and Top Hat was brilliant on such a small stage. Whole cast fantastic. A very enjoyable evening.
S. M.
Great evening of food drink and entertainment. Attentive and very pleasant staff. Buffet evening meal was excellent. Comedy acts were great
K. H.
A must have experience.
Never fails to deliver
I. J.
A lovely evening in a unique venue. We have been here several times and it has always made for a memorable evening. The building is charming, and they have done a fantastic job preserving the original mill mechanism ( you can watch the wheel turning through the window over dinner). The food was tasty and puts you in the perfect mood for the excellent acting and live music in the play that follows. What more could you want from an evening out with friends and family?!
G. B.
Meal and Theatre were excellent. We will book again.
J. S.
Great evening (Magic Show) - felt very safe with good spacing in both restaurant and theatre and helpful and attentive staff. Really good atmosphere even with very reduced numbers. Performances really good too. Well done the Mill!
O. H.
FANTASTIC
We had a wonderful night at The Mill, and could not recommend it highly enough.
FOOD - The meal was charming. Comforting food which they have got just right. A help yourself selection of beef pie, gammon, veg moussaka, cabbage, potatoes and other bits and pieces. Desert choices were great too.
STAFF - Unbelievably helpful and friendly. Helped carry our plates as we had our hands full, were only too happy to help with information and were cheerful and energetic with it. Made a change to be around such an enthusiastic young bunch.
VENUE - well it's just charming. A hidden gem in just 30 miles or so from London. A beautiful busilding which has been sympathetically restored for a new purpose. The bathrooms are immaculate and the bar area is spacious and well designed. Dining room we were in had a warm, pub like feel which made us feel very welcome.
PRODUCTION - We saw 'Towards Zero', which was excellent in my opinion. Was fun to watch an old fashioned one set play.
OVERALL - If you are debating whether to book, stop debating and go and enjoy a really charming night out. Ticket price was around £50 per head but this includes a two course meal and is good value IMO.
T.
Nice location and friendly staff, But.....
Our late July visit to see "Relatively Speaking" was spoiled by posters and tannoy announcement telling people to wear a mask while in the bar, walking about and during the performance....
If "The Mill at Sonning" was serious about protecting the general age group that attends their performances, who have all being double jabbed.
They should be handing out proper "N95" masks to every customer attending, not packing people into one floor of the restaurant and spreading those who feel they are vulnerable into the two empty side isles in the theatre...?
Back to our visit, enjoyed our meal and the "Relatively Speaking" performance was really good 👍
H. G.
This was my first visit to the mill and I was not disappointned! I went to watch 'Singing in the Rain' and have a meal beforehand. The food was served carvery style and was delicious. Your pudding was brought to you at the table; you had a choice of 4 different things. The play itself, Singing in the Rain, was performed in an intimate theatre, making any seat a great view of the stage. It was delightfully funny, with acting and singing worthy of any West End stage. Highly recommended.
S. C.
Great place, we love it & have been many times. Dinner before the evening theatre or lunch before the matinées. Every seat is great, so your seats are allotted for you & you find your tickets on your dinner table. Staff friendly & delightful, great bar, open before & after the show & a marvellous pianist on a Saturday night. Who could ask for more? Go on, treat yourself!
A. W.
Great food, brilliant performance.
D. W.
Brilliant performance and excellent meal. Very friendly and polite staff especially in the restaurant. Only disappointment is that the bottles of London Pride appear to have reduced in size whereas the price has remained the same. Price of drinks are a little expensive.
M. H.
Everything fantastic. The chef was apologizing it was his first night.... food was great! The play we watched Agatha Christie's unexpected guest was brilliantly acted and kept you excited the whole way through absolutely 5/5
C. H.
Went to see Guys and Dolls. Friendly welcome, good buffet style food. The production was excellent - very professional ensemble cast who all could act, sing and dance. An intimate theatre (only 6 rows) where as audience you really felt close to the action. The only problem was getting through the Reading rush hour traffic to get to the theatre.
A. C.
Although the theatre is not open (4th October 2020), the restaurant area has been opened with an a la carte menu. We've been impressed by what the team at the Mill at Sonning have done in making their restaurant safe with plenty of space between tables as well as using a small adjacent table as a serving table so that staff and customers don't come within 2m of each other. The food is good quality at a very reasonable price: we certainly recommend the steak and their signature bread and butter pudding is on the dessert menu.
S. B.
A wonderful evening at The Mill Theatre, Sonning. A lovely meal, waited on by polite and friendly staff. An amazing bar area with the water wheel gently turning in the background. The best part of the evening had to be watching "A Night in Provence". A fabulous performance by all. Many laugh out loud moments! But the stand out performance had to be from Mark Pearce! Fabulous! Thank you and Well done!
B. H.
Excellent venue and the performance of Gaslight was superb. We were however disappointed with the food service. By the time we got upstairs to our table the food was only lukewarm and the cheese and biscuit choice was quite sparse with no crackers just 3 digestive biscuits and limited choice of cheese (2 small pieces) accompanied by 3 grapes?
P. B.
An amazing venue which delivers everytime in terms of the performance and meal. The thrillers are my favourite to watch as the intimate theatre lends a really atmospheric feel. They have been fantastic about dealing with bookings interrupted by COVID. Here’s to them thriving into the future, great that they have opened up the restaurant let’s hope the theatre can open soon.
R. R.
Quaint little theatre, enjoyed the show but thought it was a little expensive for what you got. (£58.50 each)
You help yourself to a cooked buffet style meal which was ok'ish shown to your table, service provided to clear plates then serve desserts( rather disappointing) and coffee.
Lovely little performance with only 4 cast but enjoyable.
J. B.
Very historic and atmospheric. Staff were extremely helpful and attentive. The restaurant offered a good choice of dishes. If attending the theatre to see "Singing in the Rain" ( I recommend you do! ) and are sitting in the front row, you will get a little damp! They do, however supply a small tarpaulin each to keep the majority of the 'rain' off. 😉

I went there twice this year, Halloween and Christmas.
The place is really nice and cosy, with the Mill and the river.
Service is brilliant, lots of people to take care of you.
Food is good with multiple choices.
Both theatre plays were really good.
A really good piano player after the plays.
Perfect evening.
K. “. E.
We had a buffet dinner before the theatre, but the food was dry in general and below average.. The atmosphere was lovely and the show was good.
R. B.
Brilliant venue especially on a sunny day. Lovely terrace to sit out in the sunshine overlooking the river having a drink before the performance. Theatre is intimate but seats are well placed. Only thing that could do with improving are the loos!
T. H.
Wow!!! After not having a great experience one time which I reviewed a couple of years ago, what a turnaround!!! We had a drink before our meal in the courtyard overlooking the water - very tranquil! The food was brilliant on Saturday; the play was excellent (Agatha Christie's "Spiders Web") and looking round at the audience - everyone was totally engaged as the actors were superb! The auditorium was full to the rafters. I have also considered the fact that it is a buffet in the restaurant so yes you have to queue for food, but I can't imagine how everyone could possibly eat in time if it was a waiter service for the whole meal. The dessert is brought to the table followed by coffee/tea and drinks can be ordered to be at the table for the interval to ensure there is time to enjoy it, so much better than in some theatres where we have spent most of an interval either queuing in the bar queue or for the powder room. I have never had to queue in either here AND there is no hike to a car park miles away from the venue either as there is a large car park on site. We will all be back soon! Fantastic evening out.
A. D.
It obviously depends on your choice of entertainment as to your overall experience. A 2 course meal is included and generous portions are presented at the buffet. Queuing for the buffet before you go to your table is a negative. It is a small, intimate venue in the round. My second visit and will go again
J. K.
Lovely intimate surroundings. Food was of good quality, entertainment was excellent and theatre was cosy and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful. This was a first class evening out, good value for money and I will be visiting again very soon.
C. S.
Excellent meal and comedy Funny Money
D. B.
A fantastic small theatre in a beautiful part of the world. Situated next to a river with its own functioning water wheel in the bar!
The restaurant is classy and all the staff are very professional.
For a small theatre it has some top line touring shows and acts on as well as excellent plays
A. M.
So much personality! Really different and you can tell the people running it really care about it. Saw Singing in the Rain because we knew someone in it, but if we lived closer we'd be here for every show. Great food and service in the restaurant too.
S. M.
Rather unusual venue providing a show a dining package all in one place in a nice country old mill setting. Food was excellent and staff were very helpful but there is a mad rush and long queues for serving that I did not much like. The Agatha Christie play was though excellent in the small theatre.
J. R.
First time visiting here. we saw The 10 times Table. An hilarious play about a village committee meeting. The Mill is an extraordinary experience on so many levels. The setting is wonderful, the food really good and i loved buffet style so you can satisfy your hunger. Polite and helpful staff. Such a gem !
P. T.
Wednesday night show is good as you miss the weekend crowds. The food was good and the staff very friendly and helpful. Many of them still at school and doing their very best to help. We all loved the show and the way that th e audience is so close you are almost on the stage. Book early for the best seats.
I. W.
Excellent place to go for a meal and watch a play.
The bar is good with interesting views of the old mill machinery.
The restaurant serves good varied food with several choices on offer.
The theatre stages great plays with well known and talented actors and directors.
Well worth visiting.
L. M.
WONDERFUL theatre. Amazing scenery, set on the banks of the Thames. Undergoing constant upgrading as they improve what already feels like an amazing place to be.
Food is always provided, along with your ticket. Beautiful patio gives the visitor, peaceful views of the river Thames & the bar has 2 water wheels & one actually works too. Staff are excellent.... nothing is too much trouble.
R. M.
Absolutely breathtaking place! Felt care and attention from all the staff and the food was pretty good too! We paid 55 quid each for our show tickets, food (basically as much as you can eat!), and pudding! Plus free coffee and tea! What more could you want! Top night, top grub and a top place! I wholeheartedly recommend this place!
D. B.
Compared to London theatre prices this is a bargain. There is a beautiful water wheel bar, which is mesmerising, for pre dinner drinks. Dinner is presented buffet style help yourself which is great as you can try more than one thing. There's a good choice of desserts and then you finish off with a show or concert. I have been here several times and have booked to go again. The last show I saw "Singing in the Rain" was fantastic.
i.
Excellent show and good food. There is not enough time for an interval drink and the coffee was cold.
I. R.
An excellent venue for a theatre/dinner trip.
Atmospheric low lighting and furniture enhance the feeling of being in a mill as does the mill wheel which is still revolving behind protective glass.
Always good food but they ran out of the beef pie quickly because it is so popular.
I found the staff very helpful and they evidently enjoyed working there.
I. H.
Excellent experience. Very helpful staff. They went out of their to help my friend who had a bad back.
Food good as was show.
Will certainly be back.
N. J.
Lovely setting with a meal and a show. Food was actually fairly good.. Buffet style for mains. Bar is really nice with a good view of an old water wheel!
T. L.
Fantastic experience. Lovely food and a really great performance. The theatre is cozy and the acting was happening, not just on stage but also throughout the auditorium. This made you really feel involved.
M. M.
First time for us for the meal and theatre formula. We really enjoyed it. Had a lovely glass of wine in some unexpected sunshine on the terrace, followed by buffet meal and Alan Aykbourn's 'Ten Times Table'. Important not to overeat and fall asleep during the performance.
S. F.
Excellent food and great staff. Brilliant play. Thoroughly recommend it.
A. M.
Always a favourite venue, whether for our corporate entertainment needs or for a personal visit. A real sense of warmth and welcome, with such excellent entertainment.
B. H.
This is a great place to spend an evening. If you like the theatre, then you will love the Mill at Sonning. A meal is included in the ticket price, which is very good. And with that, a good play, nice surroundings, comfy seats. What more could you ask for.
A. B.
Lovely place. Friendly staff, good food and reasonable prices. Great location.
A. L.
Still life. It was a take on Brief Encounter. Performed in the bar/cafe, Excellent. Will go again.
A. F.
We absolutely loved our visit today we have been before but this time we took my brother in law and our son.
Our mealwas very tasty and my daughter and son in law who are vegans were catered for with a lovely 3 bean goulash.
The comedy was so funny that l had tears in my eyes and my jaw was aching long after we got home. The rest of the family were in fits of laughter too.
A fabulous time! Thank you.
S. T.
Sunday, 23rd December 2018: Delightful welcoming Staff in good atmospheric restaurant, with a good choice of food. We attended a wonderful polished theatre performance of "Guys & Dolls." Other than 'the sound' requiring toning down a little, amazing clever choreography, plus excellent voice and acting skills shown throughout. SRT.
D. N.
Odd place. The theatre is great and the show will be whatever you have booked. The problem is with the meal ( which is compulsory as far as I know). You queue up a staircase to reach a rather tatty area where the dinner buffet is presented. Food is very plain, and served out of big tins like school dinners. There is a smell of boiled cabbage.
There is table service for pudding,so why not mains too? Bar is very expensive, and also somewhat broken down. I understand it's an old building, but it needs some work.
J. H.
Lovely place. Lovely people. Lovely food. And the performance was great. A very enjoyable evening.Well done all.
J. B.
Singing in the Rain production was excellent and the singing and dancing was top notch. Lunch was very good and all the staff were efficient and friendly. A lovely day to spend a Saturday.
C. W.
'Singing in the Rain' was fabulous! So much fun with the front rows given waterproofs! Excellent food with good gluten free choice. Highly recommended.
P. A.
Fantastic venue, I can't believe I've reached the age where I could ever enjoy this type of entertainment. In all honesty I whish I'd tried the Mill years ago, the food is always really good, the waiting staff are all really helpful and the bit I was sceptical of - the performance. They are amazing, I've been to 4 or 5 different shows and they have all been faultless, the most recent was High Society.
This is a thing you really should try and possibly sooner than later.
T. C.
Dinner and a show, it's a bit old fashioned.
The meal involves you queuing up like you're at school and then self serving from catering trays. The food was actually very tasty but the way it was served definitely took away from the experience. It's an interesting slice of history and we enjoyed our evening but it could do with a bit of an update.
All in all its very old fashioned and an interesting evening but I wouldn't rush back.
E. H.
Lovely afternoon looking around the Mill from the workshop to the dressing room. Worth a lovely afternoon with cream tea.
Y. C.
What a delightful afternoon, beautiful food , lovely service and an amazing show. Wonderful experience. X
G. Y.
Excellent play, meal a bit mediocre, drinks expensive, auditorium has been refurbished, good night out
A. L.
The staff were excellent - efficient, friendly, polite, professional, informative and welcoming. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Bathroom and shower functioned well. The food was good. Location pleasant. Negatives that could be addressed: rhythmical vibrations all night and day from somewhere in the ceiling above Rooms 211-213 - a fan mechanism or something that sounded like a demented tuba-player; lack of tv reception in 211 because of faulty aerial connection; lack of newspapers; slow coffee machines and cramped corridor in food area.
J. P.
We felt very safe and secure in a welcoming atmosphere with SOMEONE COOKING FOR US as well as a great show afterwards. Brilliant.
T. T.
Food was amazing. Decor was beautiful highly recommend will be hoping to return again
H. W.
Brilliant place!!! Wonderful performances, super little theatre and really lovely restaurant.
T. G.
Great food, great show ( The Bourne Again Shadows) but it was cold in the auditorium. We were in row B , 6 to 9 , and the cold air coming from the air con. was too much . We asked if they could turn it down at the interval and they said they'd try but it was about the same for the second half. Several other people asked about it too, so it wasn't only us who noticed it . Good job I took a cardi !
The only negative thing about the whole evening
L. B.
Good food, hot.
Friendly & efficient staff.
Fabulous show - Top Hat!
D. R.
Always have good shows here. Very well organised and an excellent venue converted from a mill to a comfortable theatre. Would like to have the option of ticket only but even so food is a good quality so you will not be disappointed
N. W.
Thoroughly enjoyable evening. The meal prior to the performance was good & the play itself was very entertaining. Being an Agatha Christie fan - this didn't disappoint.
D. B.
As always, a great night. The food is good, the atmosphere friendly and a great venue to watch a brilliant play. Remember that the ticket price includes your dinner!
r. j.
Better than going up town! Easy parking, relaxing environment with nice short walks along the river snytime of the year. Dining is a set buffet and good value and nice to know it fits in with the show timing. School teenagers used to serve and some times service falls behind while they chat to each other. Perhaps a restaurant manager should be on the floor. BUT each performance has something for everyone and very proffessional. With the seating arranged that makes it feel you are actually there and it's really happening. Musical items are also brilliant.
D. P.
Took my girlfriend for dinner and play for her birthday, it was a great evening we both thoroughly enjoyed it, The whole evening, Food, Show, Drinks in one building. Highly recommended, on Friday and Saturday there is always live music in the bar after the show.
C. B.
Beautiful little theatre. Fantastic play 'A Night in Provence' I would not say the food was "Posh" but it's good, wholesome and plentiful. Will definitely go back.
R. H.
If you are looking for an evening of theatre and dinner then look no further! The Mill is a truly gorgeous venue, quaint and fabulous at the same time.
Top notch theatre and lovely dining.
T. C.
Restaurant manager so helpful as my husband has disablement problems. Food and staff lovely, show amazing. Sunday Evening performance ,15 December loads of
fun.
B. B.
A great experience to have dinner then a show in an intimate 250 seater theatre. The only downside is the interior layout which makes movements chaotic as corridors and walkways are very narrow. Hope they never have a fire!
M. M.
Lovely dinner theatre. Setting is good. The food is always great. The shows in this intimate theatre are alwaus a pleasure. Just seen singing in the rain and this was tremendous.
D. H. B.
We saw Rod Stewart look alike. Fantastic, he had got the voice and you would think it was himself. He performed at the Mill at Sonning. You get a meal and then the performance. Price is around £ 50 and they also have plays and musicals.
P. W.
Show was enjoyable but not brilliant. The main course was OK but the desert was very tasty.
K. R.
Beautiful location, quirky and very welcoming. Depends what show you come to see but always good value and a great night out. The foods average but the setting & theatre makes up for that.
j. g.
Saw singing in the rain . This was a fantastic production the cast were amazing so energetic and had fun . The food and restaurant also excellent . This is our second visit and can not wait for our next trip
C. L.
Good play & wholesome food
J. H.
Good for the Mill at Sonning for delivering dinner and entertainment (socially distanced of course) at a time when there is so little live theatre. Well done to you all at the Mill.
A. M.
This is an occasion not to be missed. I spend 3.months annually in the UK and attend as many performances as I can during that time. Good value for money as the meal is always excellent.
m. w.
went to see Run For Your Wife last week and had a rotten meal!
food was cold and there was no decent green vegetables i.e cabbage, beans, peas, cauliflower etc. quality of food has gone down for a couple of months now. Very disappointing
L. A.
Love this venue. Great meal followed by an evenings entertainment in a small theatre. This time we saw Singing in the Rain ☔ Fantastic!
R. T.
Another enjoyable night at The Mill. Fantastic food, friendly and courteous staff , lovely atmosphere and yet snother great show. All in all a very good night out. Well done, once again you covered it all!
M. B.
Been many times, can't recommend this highly enough. Delighted it's open again but wish we'd given the farce a miss... We'll acted but ghastly!!
M. R.
Lovely dinner theatre, well organised, very nice food and excellent performance of Singing in the Rain, water included. Thoroughly recommend the theatre and the musical.
R. R.
Nice place for a quiet lunch time drink. Good service. We didn't try the food as we were heading to the Szechuan restaurant in Reading, after walking here from Henley.
A. M.
Great place for a meal and entertainment, saw The Zoots here and what a fantastic atmosphere in the venue, ample parking available
C. N.
Enjoyable few hours at The Mill. Acoustics in theatre excellent. Buffet meal good value- 7/10. Only downside- shandy a little pricey.
D. W.
The Mill at Sonning is a unique and quirky venue serving good food and great entertainment. The theatre is wonderful and the professional drama, music and performances are world class. I highly recommend a visit. It's a special experience.
N. M.
Went to see tribute act of Johnny cash brilliant night, great atmosphere great food self service as much as you can eat, waiters are very polite, we had tickets for the front row numbers 27,28,29,30 where you are right in the corner not the best of seats but it's first come first pick definitely going again .
D. B.
Always a pleasurable treat to have a meal and a show at this lovely old building. The only downside can be the traffic through the village, but that's hardly the fault of The Mill so five stars anyway.
S. H.
Plenty of parking, delicious dinner and great entertainment. Lift provided for disabled access to theatre and restaurant. Good selection of wines and helpful, friendly staff.
C. I.
Excellent play excellent lunch.
I brought friends from Rutland who thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
G. P.
Went for a magic night & dinner. It was a full house and deserved to be. The entire event was a very reasonable price & I also quite enjoyed just looking round the place! I would suggest watching out for traffic while getting there though...
A. C.
Nothing to complain about here! We went to see 'Top Hat'. Good night out food, drink and entertainment
N.
Always a great experience, yummy lunch, good service, fantastic show, so professional
I. J.
I think Guys and Dolls is one of the best shows I've seen at the Mill. A big stage production that you feel part of. I also thought the dinner was very good.
C. C.
Great food.
Wonderful show watching Born Again Shadows. Absolutely brilliant.
C. R.
Excellent venue, staff and food. Genesis Connected gig fantastic!
T. n.

s. s.
Great evening. Lovely venue and the staff are fantastic
T. W.
Dinner and theatre in this fabulous old mill building. Dinner is a little school canteen, but the food is good. Fabulous little theatre seats about 120ish. Lots of stairs.
s. l.
Lovely evening. Less artificial smoke machines would be appreciated by many
A. O.
Great food and a brilliant show. Need more bar staff!
F. F.
Lovely building with working watermill featured in the bar. Nice little terrace by the millpond. Not hugely busy until the theatre crowd arrives!
J. W.
Hot buffet-style food is best considered as part of the overall experience rather than a draw in itself, but every theatre production I've ever seen here has been great.
H. F.
The Mill is a beautiful location. The carvery dinner was delicious and it was great being able to have your meal and then walk straight through to watch the play.
A. C.
Visited on Sunday to see Simon Goodall and the Bourne again Shadows , exelent show and a lovely meal.
B. C.
The food was delicious, the staff were welcoming and the whole atmosphere was truly delightful - a wonderful Sunday lunch - thank you.

R. S.
I always visit here when up the Thames. Dinner and a play during the week and sometimes on Sunday they have a really good concert. Excellent!
N. J.
A beautiful building housing a water mill and theatre. Drop by and have a beer in the authentic pub or dine and watch a production upstairs...
J. R.

M. D.
Fantasic show, great food, great price, friendly helpful staff, just a wonderful evening. Thanks for putting on such a great show. Highly recommend!!!
B. C.
Excellent surrounding -- stage area very " cosy" -- lovey restaurant area with a very good variety of well cooked food -- the refurbished bar with views of the mills wheel is a nice area to relax and have drink --altogether a very nice place to spend an evening out -- the shows that they put on excellent too
B. P.
It's a lovely intimate theatre, one of the best outside London. I always enjoy going there as they always put on great productions.
D. S.
Our first time at the venue but really friendly staff, lovely meal and a great play. Will be heading back again soon.

S. P.
Lovely meal and excellent show, what more could you want, comfortable and even fairly cool while outside was 29c
M.
3 out of group of 4 we're sick after eating here. I'm vegetarian as was the only one not ill. They wasn't interested at all when I reported it saying 'well no one else has reported sickness' email was ignored and when I called I got a very defensive response!!
P. A.
Went to watch a play with mother. The food beforehand was terrific, and the play brilliant. The staff are young, but their customer service was exemplary.
L. H.

S. S.
Perfect evening Rod Stewart Experience plus excellent meal. Social distancing carried out expertly.
E. C.
I went to the matinee on Saturday 16th Feb and saw Guys and Dolls, I had a nice meal and the staff were very friendly, and I enjoyed the show, my only complaint is that it was so cold where I was sat in row D 15, there seemed to be a air conditioning unit above me that was blasting out cold air, this spoilt my enjoyment and the people sitting around me as well.
M. M.
Excellent food and service.
Show was brilliant
Facilities clean
M. H.
Amazing night. Whitney queen of the night. Fantastic cast. The music n singing surpassed all expectstions. Will attend again next year without a doubt
C. K.
Fantastic show, but food and service prior at best could be described as "ok". Only a first visit so perhaps it was an off day.
F. W.
Excellent evening on Friday. Great food and Queen music. Nearly normal.
E. H. B.

L. N.
Wonderful production of 'Singin' in the Rain'. Great cast, lots of energy. Had a lovely evening.
P. J.
Lovely setting and great show. Food was nice and will definitely be back.
A. S.
Have just watched a performance of Singing in the Rain. Absolutely first class in my opinion and hard to believe that any 'West End' production could better it.
J. P.
Excellent fare and a very good tribute to Queen!
C. W.
Always a treat to enjoy an evening here! Great food, great entertainment and a lovely ambience 😁
B. C.
The Mill At Sonning is a a beautiful 300 seat theatre built in the picturesque remains of a Flour Mill near Reading. For a theatre nestled away in the countryside, The Mill constantly attracts award winning actors and West End regulars to its boards. I saw the farce, a genre which seems to be a house speciality, Taking Steps on my visit.
#WeHeartHitchcock
P. W.
A brilliant outstanding performance of Guys and Dolls. Worthy of transfer to the West End. Dinner was good too.
T. D.
The show was very good the only disappointment was although the food was good it was not very hot they should do something about that ĺ
