Reviews of Acton Scott Historic Working Farm

Absolutely great day out. Do not miss it. We arrived at 11am and left at 4pm. Lots to see. Guides are there to tell you more and for you to ask questions.
The animals are out working at different times, for example the Shire horses work in the morning and they get to go in and rest for a few hours. The forge was working all day. Tom was a super guy. He told us all about being a farrier and horse shoes are like human shoes, specific to each foot, who knew!
The animals are brilliant and well cared for. Piglets were born last week and we were able to get quite close. Goats were my favourite.
You will want walking shoes or boots. Wellies for kids. Take a picnic but although the school house cafe was closed, an improvised barbecue was available in the covered picnic area. Allergies are catered for.
My husband uses a wheelchair so we hired their Tramper for the day. Book in advance for this. No charge just a donation.

First time coming to the farm and we have had a fantastic day out. Cheap and affordable plenty of animals to see? Every staff member was super polite to us. The blacksmith man was amazing and super kind to our little boy and he is very happy with his horse shoe! Really enjoyed feeding the lambs and holding the baby chicks We will defo be returning. Great day out thankyou defo reccomend a day out here.

Our second visit to the farm (August 2019) and it was just as good as our previous visit. If your into farming history or even just like farms and farm animals, Acton Scott is the place to go. Watching the heavy horses doing what they do best is a wonderful sight but you're reminded that Shire horses are now more endangered than Pandas. The only downside to this visit was that many of the displays that we had seen in our previous visit weren't there and the hand milking of the cows, which I had the privilege to take part in and had enjoyed greatly last time, had been stopped some time ago. All this said and done, I would definitely recommend this place and would definitely go again.
C. W.
Had a wonderful time at the farm. A lovely place with lots of animals that you can get up and close with. All of the staff were really friendly, informative and helpful.
Due to covid regs we pre booked. It was really well managed and non intrusive yet still interactive!!
Highly recommend a visit!
M. G.
A full day of fantastic farm fun! Loved the baby pigs, lambs and calves. Learned about so many things from quilting to milking. The best was the free guided tour that was super informational. Great place to visit with or without kids...truly something for everyone.

My favourite place to visit ! Been 4 years in a row. Staff go out of there way to make each visit a magical experience. Very hands on. There's lots to do including chick holding, lamb feeding, tours and demonstrations. No visit is the same, there's always something new going on. The cafe and staff are amazing. Would highly recommend to any ages.

> Please like helpful reviews < Amazing day out with the family. Really nice atmosphere and lots going on to immerse you in days gone by and hands on helping with the animals. Thoroughly recommended.
R. T.
Fantastic day out, the staff are friendly and helpful and the farm animals very well looked after. Highly recommended.

We obviously heard about this place because of the TV series, so though we'd check it out. To be fair we didn't have high expectations and those expectations were spot on. There's not a great deal to see or do really. Not sure if we just went on a quiet day (mid week in early may), so we didn't stay for that long. You can spend 2 or 3 hrs here, if you stop for some lunch in the old schoolhouse (which does some nice food, but is a little pricey... Tourist pricing rather than comparable to the area). The staff are friendly and knowledgeable (sorry, you won't see any TV stars working there).. and if you're lucky they may be feeding the lambs or ducklings/chics. We got to feed a lamb and hold some of the chics and ducklings, and in one of the cottages they had a couple in Victorian clothing making some kind of pancakes that farm workers often took with them.. they were generous with the samples too. 😀

I absolutely love this place, it has loads of character. The village hall and adjacent field are Available for hire at very reasonable rates. a group of around 20 of us book it and camp/caravan every year
A. B.
Just as wonderful as ever! Excellent Covid measures in place, plenty of room to practice social distancing and the staff are as warm and friendly as before.
D. M.
Wonderful historic working farm. Fantastic for children and adults alike. Very friendly farm animals.
M. W.
Beautiful spot with great views. Lovely cafe and pretty garden to sit out in. Stopped here recently on a bike ride and it was gorgeous. Recommended.
B. H.
Wonderful day. My grandchildren had a great day, seeing all the farm animals, stroking lambs and holding chicks and ducklings. Staff were really helpful. We were there for 6 hours and the children were occupied and inspired the whole time.
V. P.
Great place to visit the volunteers are very knowledgeable and explain how things work back in the day. They also hold courses and also cater for having school trips.
C. B.
Fantastic day out with the family, lots to see, do and learn about. Definitely be revisiting again
M. G.
Love it here, but admittedly not so much fun when it's really boggy. Lovely animal experiences for the children, the shire Horses are impressive 😍
J. H.
Used 2 take my kids there every easter when they growing up. So many lovely memories and now it was time to take my 2 grandsons. My kids and i relived our happy memories. Still the same. Great place if u want to see just how hard it was farming in years gone by. The staff so informative like years ago and nice 2 recognise some faces from the past. I would recommend it 2 anyone who interested in history of farming and the great outdoors. And great place 2 take kids
A. C.
This place was just amazing. It cost us £25 for a family of 4 and it was worth every penny. Both my children aged 4 and 8 were involved in the activities and the staff were amazing. I held a duck and chick and the staff encouraged both my children to have a touch so they can get used to it and build their confidence. My children fed lambs and had a go at sitting on the horses. There was plenty to see and open fields with chickens running around for the children to play. We had a cuppa in the tea room which was lovely and suitable for children. There was an outside park and benches to make the most of this nice weather. I haven't been before but I would go back!! It was simply a very good family day out! Thank you Xx
P. W.
An excellent morning spent here. The staff are brilliant and seem happy to answer any questions. There is plenty to do for a morning/afternoon with scope for more as restrictions ease. The 'little farmers' walk around in the early part of the day was brilliant for children of all ages.
S. W.
A lot to see including historic tools, processes, machines, farm property and housing. Close up and sometimes hands on animal encounters. Ideal size for a day visit.
R. D.
We absolutley loved this place. So much to do in beautiful grounds and you can really get up close with the animals too. Little ones thoroughly enjoyed it too. Will purchase season ticket next time we visit.
L. T.
Update April 2021: Acton Scott is open again and we had a fabulous visit this week. Fascinating to have basket weaving demo from David and then have Tom the wonderful blacksmith make us our own horseshoe while we watched. A great time to visit now as there are baby goats, piglets and chicks and the lovely café is open, too.
Great working farm with friendly staff and engaging exhibits and animals. Lovely gift shop with a range of unusual items from local artists. We attended a super Halloween event with DJ gs and storytelling which was excellent. Going to go back on spring to see the heavy horses and maybe take a craft course.
S. G.
The farm was well worth visiting. Lots of interesting things to see and knowledgeable staff and volunteers to tell us about them. However, our day was marred by the attitude of the chef in the cafe, who shouted at us and was extremely rude when we politely enquired if our, fairly basic, order had been forgotten after a long wait.
M. A.
Our grandkids (6 & 5) had the most fantastic time. We went in the afternoon at a quiet time which meant they could get involved in everything. Operated the bellows for the blacksmith and he gave them the horse shoe. Helped collect eggs from ducks and hens - mammoth task there! Rode the cart horses. Fed the geese, ducks and hens. Threshed the corn. Lots of other things. A truly memorable day. We were very lucky because it was late and the weather wasn’t great so they got a lot of attention but I know they will remember it for the rest of their lives. Wonderful staff. Thank you so much. They ask to go back regularly - wanted to see the lambs but then came CV19😕
F. H.
Lovely but nothing like as much activity as I expected. More a museum, or showpiece than an actual working farm.. My expectations were probably daft... I visualised a real farm...
The high point for our grandchildren was working the bellows for the farrier and :having a horseshoe to take home. Great idea. Lots of interesting info. Good lunch in the cafe.
A. P.
Reasonably priced, fantastic, friendly staff, amazing animals and things to do. Would recommend this place to anyone with an interest in historic farming and somewhere the kids can get stuck in with the farm tasks. Good coffee and cafe too!
C. E.
Without a doubt, the best day out of our holiday. We were born into farming in that era but still learned plenty.
J. P.
Great place tucked away from it all in a perfect location. Free parking outside the door and a warm welcome from staff. Family ticket includes up to 3 children and at £25 was well worth the money. Kids aged 11, 10 and 4 all loved it and were allowed to just roam into enclosures and get up close with animals. Would highly recommend a visit.
A. L.
Loved our visit today. Always a joy to see animals and the staff were so knowledgeable and helpful. We particularly enjoyed the shire horses and talking to Tom the farrier who was absolutely fascinating.
L. B.
Fabulous day! Lovely place! Super friendly people. Lots of great animals. Beautiful setting. We will be going again. Great for adults and children of all ages.
A. M.
I took my two little boys here. We really liked it. They have a great cafe with a lovely play area. We fed the lambs and saw some animals. Possibly not so great for the tiny little ones, but my eldest was certainly interested.
A. W.
Very good place to keep kids entertained the entire day. Sand pit. Fairy doors hunt. Animals feeding. Holding chicks. Milking a (fake) cow. Cafe shop. Etc.
We spent our second day in Bridgenorth. Another great place. Look for the car parking besides the river. There is a big playground for all ages and ice cream. Then you can stroll by the river and get the little train up the hill for 1.60 return. Kids under 5 go free
You can have a picnic at the castle ruins and the steam trains will entertain the kids while you have some food.
S. W.
Loved this place, such a lovely place to walk around and see all the different animals. Especially loved Charlie and Joe the Shire Horses as I'm a big fan of them. Definately will be going again. Loved there 1940s day!
J. P.
The farm was lovely although limited due to Covid. All the people working /volunteering were great too. Unfortunately we had an appalling experience with the chef. On politely enquiring if we'd been forgotten 40 minutes after ordering, he was disgracefully rude, shouting that he didn't care, wasn't interested, and to go away!! A thoroughly vile man, inexcusable behaviour. I recommend taking a picnic.
P. A.
Wonderful place to visit. The staff are very knowledgeable and are more than happy to take the time to talk to you, you can watch butter being made and then buy some it's delicious, you can help Simon groom his beautiful horses (he needs a young 4 year old shire to learn along side the older horse ) and you can see him working with the horses, and then have a well earned lunch or just a drink in the school house cafe, definitely worth the five stars.
d. w. h.
Excellent customer service and so much to see and interact with, animals, farm equipment surrounded by beautiful countryside. Great day out for young and old. A happy, informative, relaxed day out to share with the family.
m. a.
I haven't been to Acton Scott in a while. It has some changes for the better. Nice day out enjoyed my visit. I also enjoyed the gluten free cake that they have, they also do food in their cafe. The children had a lovely time. We got to see how they lived back in the days gone by.
L. H.
What a fantastic place! Visited with toddlers who absolutely loved the little travelling homes you can climb in to. We had a lovely time making felt soaps with Su and looking for fairy doors. Will hopefully visit again.
L. C.
Loved it. Had a great few hours. Didn't see much of the farm actually working. Watched the butter being made and brought a packet. It is beautiful, tastes lovely. Facilities were brilliant- Toilets everywhere. Not as many animals that I had hoped for. The baby pigs were cute. The horses, chickens were great. Met the bad tempered geese that was out and about going for people. Men mainly did'nt hurt anyone but funny. The people on site were very good to talk too and interesting.
Well worth a visit. I will go again.. The children really enjoy seeing the farm equiptment too. lovely areas for picnics.
M. W.
It's very interesting and educational to see how an old style farm operated . Remember, old style means just 100 years ago ,so much has changed in the last 100 years .I would say it is well worth a visit for both adults and children .it's quite compact and easy to get around, with animals to see along with wild fowl, chickens and if you are lucky you may get to see the horses ploughing, depending on the season
B. J.
Brilliant day out and the perfect place to take your child for their first farm experience. Lots of toilet facilities and outdoor areas for kids to explore. Many opportunities to experience farm and animals up close. Staff were fantastic and friendly and the café is brilliant. Lots of parking and lots of places for picnics.
J. T.
Great place to explore and get some up close experiences with farm animals. Nicely kept, but not so tidy as to feel fake - no intrusive signage that distract you from the feeling you're on an old farm.
The cafe in an old school house on the farm is really good and serves food from the farm.
A. K.
Amazing experience. We happen to be here on festival day so it was free, but even if we had to pay the 25 pound entry for a family it would have been worth it. It was a bit of a slow start trying to figure out what to do and where to go but once we got going the kids really loved it and we were here for almost five hours including the festival.
T. Y.
Lovely place, very friendly people, very informative would recommend to anyone with children, our children got to hold day old chicks (ducks and chickens) stroked lambs pigs and big Joe the horse they loved it.
T. F.
Great experience! We went on the open day and it was packed! Great day!
J. P.
Had a really lovely afternoon, very interesting and such friendly helpful people. Daughter really enjoyed the hands on experiences with the animals. Great cafe with delicious cake too.
M. K.
A great afternoon out with authentic machinery, old buildings, fantastic animals (many ducks, chickens, pigs, calves). Covid measures being followed carefully, a handful of buildings not open as number of staff is reduced but didn't detract from the experience at all.
R. B.
We had an amazing day here, kids totally happy all day. Long queues for food at lunchtime, but the cakes and drinks we had were very fresh and tasty. What made it even better, there was a whole day of a felting workshop, by Tillyteadance, and my daughter and i created something beautiful to take home, . Maxine, who ran the felting, could not have been more patient and made it all seem so simple. The things she makes to sell are superb, very inspirational. Thankyou for an amazing day!!!
S. G.
What a fantastic place for people of any age lots of history with the building's which have lovely exhibitions in them or lots of different animals. Highlight for me was watching a farrier putting new shoes on one of the shire horses. The cafe in the old schoolhouse was very good value with indoor and outdoor seating. Seeing whrre a tv series was filmed in real life made it even better. Will definately come back for another visit, highly recommend
N. P.
Fantastic day out, lovely friendly people. Loved seeing the animals run free. Would recommend anyone with kids to go here.
K. C.
Not as good on today's visit as my first time 3 years ago, but still a lovely farm to visit with children or without. Prices in the cafe are rather pricey but you can take your own picnic. The newly added sandpit was a win with our small children.
P. C.
We visited Acton Scott after seeing the television program "The Victorian Farm". Had a wonderful time seeing all the areas, except the farm house, that were shown in the programme. Even hand milked a cow, something I hadn't done in over 22yrs, but hadn't lost the touch. Planning another visit in April.
S. M.
If you love history & farm animals (like I do !) then this is the place for you ! Give yourself 3 hours for a nice walk round & a bit of cake in the cafe 👍 there's plenty of demonstrations throughout the day & folk dressed in authentic gear to fill you in on the history & details of a period working farm 😊
L. G.
This is a great day out for the family with interesting activities, lovely surroundings and of course lots of animals. My kids have enjoyed since they were little and still do as teenagers.
C. J.
Took our grandson there and we all enjoyed it. Surprisingly un-crowded for half term and looking a tad run down at the moment. Staff all friendly and helpful, nice cafe but very slow service, probably easiest to take a picnic!
w. s.
I Loved this place.

J. H.
Great place, with lots of information provided. Nice friendly staff, lovely healthy farm animals to see. Set in the lovely Shropshire countryside, well worth a visit.

Mid week early July visit. Very interesting but more demonstrators could have been present. A nice size site for a day visit with lots of close up animal encounters.
D. W.
Fantastic for our three year old, and the staff there were absolutely brilliant - great food supplied by Shropshire Hills Catering too!
F. T.
So good to be able to spend time at Acton Scott and curses to the lockdown as they were planning to be open until December. Their maximum capacity means it never feels over busy and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Roll on December 2
A. B.
Acton Scott stared in the itv series A Victorian Farm which first brought it to our attention.
A rare look at what life was like for farming families up to the 1950s. With a latge collection of animals and farm implements We enjoyed a great day out here the grandchildren loved the animals grandad had a trip down memory lane to my childhood. Shire horses are my favourites.
Signs could be better from A49 and it took us a while to find.
Pack a pair of wellies as remember this is a working farm and enjoy a grand day out.
S. Y.
Great place for the kids to have fun and learn and the adults to be kids again.
The staff are very friendly and knowledgable.
The shire horses are stunning. Support a local treasure.

A fun day out with lots to see. There are a variety of animals to see and there are often demonstrations on traditional skills such a butter making to watch. There is a cafe and there is also a gift shop.

Loved this place. In a world full of commercial themed places to go that dampen the soul, this is a fun and enjoyable place that is untouched by time. The staff are friendly and helpful and food is great. ( Coffee is a bit odd).
D. H.

A working farm, now operated by Shropshire museums. Was the background for the TV series 'Victorian Farm' . Plenty of pigs and fowls with goats and ducks. Pleasant café serves a good Moca.
R. D.
Been on a 2 day ploughing course with shire horses
The instructors Simon and Jak were great very knowledgeable very easy to talk too and nothing was to much trouble and there was no such thing as a stupid question
There were 3 of us on the course Karen,Alan and myself and the ploughing was shared between the 3 of us
I would highly recommend this place even if it was just to step back in time for a day or just a few hours
Thank you all for a great time
