Reviews of Askham Bog
D. P.
Incredible and beautiful reserve close to the city. Valuable and rare collection of plants and habitats. Care should be taken when visiting to continue to protect the site.
N. S.
This is a hidden Gem. A lovey short walk on the boardwalks that have been laid. Plenty of benches to just sit and watch the dragonflies dancing, the butterflies floating and listening to the song of many species of bird. A beautiful place to quietly pass some time and feel at one with nature.
M. B.
First time of visiting this lovely place, and it won't be the last.
We went to blow away the cobwebs and it certainly did the trick, we felt refreshed afterwards.
So peaceful and stunning, can't wait to visit in the spring.
J. L.
Frozen pathways, birdsong and eerie icy water - very atmospheric! Luckily few people on the walkways because social distancing would be tricky. Liked the info boards. Glad we've finally visited
J. W.
Lovely little nature reserve next to 1036 turn off the A64 for York and Askham Bar Park and Ride. Boardwalk round part but if going off this wellies needed.
M. B.
Enjoyable walk around the nature reserve. Saw some deer and lots of different birds. Looking forward to revisiting in the spring.
T. V.
lovely little walk! suitable for wheelchairs as the path is a raised wooden path with chicken wire over for grip. Great nature spot. plenty of floral and animal sightings. Great for child education as plenty of information listed. Dogs to be kept on leads if they wander off. Can be very damp and wet but plenty to explore.
R. K.
Lovely place to go for a bit of fresh air and some peace and quiet.
Lots of birds.
E. K. O.
So beautiful here, would be a great place to walk in any weather. Didn't venture off the board walk as had no wellies but maybe another time. There was also a wildlife trust volunteer there giving out some information about the bog, which was useful. They are trying to develop near the reserve - show your support to help stop this!
R. S. P.
A stunning place anytime of the year, and don't just walk around once hang around and walk around slowly and do a few laps. Lots to be seen but not a place to be rushed. Best going early morning as few around. Image is copyright Red Shutter Photography.
J. M.
Nice little walk with some nature to spot. Wooden walkways with chicken wire so very accessible
E. L.
Askham Bog is a big space, but you are encouraged to stick to the boardwalks to avoid upsetting the wildlife. This means you will walk round about a quarter of the site only. Great for birdwatchers but less good for walkers. Nice space, though.
a. b.
It's a lovely place to just sit and watch the birds and squirrels, or pond creatures,
N. B.
Real nice spot for a walk and adventure. Made a den out of the sticks in the middle wood. A64 is a tad noisy.
R. K.
Lovely little woodland and wildlife area . Boarded walkways. Donations welcome.
T. N.
First visit I came to have a walk around the boardwalk which is a short circular walk around middle wood there’s a couple of other woods but you’ll need wellingtons has it’s very wet and muddy there’s even a small pond an abundance of wild birds I saw a couple of roe deer on my walk not much in the way of fauna has it’s too early in the year you can walk your dogs but they must be on a leash lovely and peaceful
L. S.
A lovely walk, will be nicer in spring/summer looked forward to visit again. I hope they don't end up building on it, it's a natural habitat for a lot of animals, birds and insects
T. H.
Tranquil and a lovely place for watching nature. Needs more seating perhaps.
S. T.
Lovely for a little walk lots of birds and spotted a vole. Gonna visit again in different seasons
P. K.
Probably not the best of days to visit as it was damp and foggy but it's a great place run by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust . Greeted by a volunteer from there he gave a information and a guide . The footpaths are extremely well maintained and there are options to wander off into woodlands if you want to . It's wheelchair accessible and to say it's only a stones throw from the Knavesmire and the park and ride it's very well secluded . It was an enjoyable visit and the gentle meander took about an hour. Lots of wildlife to see and a birdwatchers paradise : thoroughly recommend visiting here the only reason I've given it 4 stars is a lack of toilet facilities so ensure you don't drink too much before going !
T. C.
Very nice little place to visit, easy to find and good parking. The boardwalk makes it easy to walk around too.
N. N.
Excellent small nature reserve. A favourite spot to spend an hour.
B. W.
Lovely quiet, tons of nature and really accessible paths with a number of benches dotted about.
A. L.
Visited on a dry January day, Easy to find with a decent size free carpark. Follow the path from the carpark to the reserve which is well signed and with an information board. The main walk is round a boardwalk, level and very easy for push or wheel chairs very good underfoot. There are oppotunities to explore off path but this time of year was very very wet !!. Dogs are welcome on a lead but may be restricted to the boardwalk (still a good walk) if livestock is on the site. Other information boards around the site and a warden with information/leaflets at certain times. Great little walk for all. Note no toilets or refreshments on sitebut still would highly recommend.
N. B.
Lovely place for a quiet walk
S. B.
Nice circular (square) clean walk around the bog from the car park. Always plenty of spaces to park. Dog allowed on the main boardwalk too. Various boggy paths off into woods, seems to be off-path spaces for kids to play building dens in the middle.
T. C.
This is an amazing place. Full of flora and fauna. Went at the beginning of autumn and saw some awesome fungi
a. r.
An oasis of nature, you can meander through and appreciate all the glorious colours
M. J.
Lovely little wildlife reserve off the beaten track. A bit of road noise but it's not too intrusive.
Looks like you can venture off the boardwalks if it is dry (or you don't mind sinking into the bog!)
M. T.
Very nice and peaceful. Beautiful scenery too.
A. G.
Really nice little walk near the city centre. Built up pathway over the bog so keep dogs on short leads. Can often spot some local wildlife. Pathway suitable for children pushchairs and wheelchairs. Can easily walk round the path in well under an hour. There is also an off road track but wellies would be required!
S. G.
One of the gems that make Yorkshire so diverse. Literally a boardwalk that cuts through bog land with small styles taking you to areas less travelled. Wildflowers, forest and insect life are all there in abundance as well as the usual bird life you'd associate with this location. A beautiful walk.
R.
A small nature reserve but a nice place to visit.
J. L.
Such a nice place to go a nice wooden path all the way round.
Only thing I dont like is when you go in and go right around to the little pool there used to be loads of bushes where all the beautiful dragonflies used to be now they have cut them all down and I dont see dragonflies anymore.
Still a nice and quiet place to go for a walk.
T. M.
A lovely place for a walk a wooden pathway round and shielded from the very hot sun. Next time we go will take wellys or walking shoes as off the beaten track is boggy.
I. C.
Lovely nature reserve just outside of York, with good access via cycle path. Board walks are suitable for young kids and wheel chair - it is a hidden gem!
C. D.
A great 15 minute loop along a boardwalk. Great for a short walk to listen to the birds!
T. Z.
It's a nice place but I realised that although the place is very big, the actual public footpath is very short. So, you either go for a short walk or you make rounds and rounds at the same route.
M. W.
Absolutely beautiful space to walk, stop, smell the different plants and wild flowers and listen to the gorgeous birdsong. I can't believe the number of times i've driven past here and not noticed it before. A sanctuary away from the madness of the modern world. Somewhere to comfort your soul.
S. V.
A beautiful area to walk through and see such a diverse selection of plants, animals and birds. Really outstanding area of what Britain was like at one historic time, with natural fen lands.
G. M.
Absolutely beautiful and so peaceful. De-stress here.
L. N.
Lovely walk with the little ones and dogs, pushchair and wheelchair friendly, would have been great if there had been a bin near the main entrance in the car park
J. H.
Askham Bog is a Site of Special Scientific interest, providing great scenic contrast with both the surrounding countryside and the city. The track around the site is a raised wooden walkway with chicken mesh covering for grip - making the site accessible at all times of the year. One of the best short walks in the area.
A. B.
Really great. We went for a little walk with our 4 year old. The walkways meant we could make it round easily
P. D.
Very good a Robin came and sat at our feet today 😀
K.
Nice and peaceful not very big but lots of wildlife
A. B.
A beautiful and peaceful gem.
N. S.
Nice spot, good (small) board walk looks like lots of other areas to explore we didn't as long in shorts and trousers will be needed in the grass areas.
S. D.
Plenty of life around the pond.
I. F.
Lovely morning out with the grandkids
H. Y.
Flat board walk maintained but Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Unpaved path to get to the boardwalk can be muddy, so bear in mind of taking a pushchair or wheelchair.
T. H.
Nice place to chill for a while, well erected pathways through most of it and bring wellies or waterproof boots if wanting to go off the wooden walkways.
J. I.
A nice, quiet walk. Very accessible and easy to do for people with walking issues. The walk around the bog is all boarded.
E. B.
Fantastic place to bring children and enjoy spotting some wildlife, no matter what time of year! Spotted some particularly cool birds!
J. Y.
Great place to walk, sit and unwind.
C. M.
Ideal walkways if you have a pram. Lots of places off the walkways for children to explore
B. I.
Oasis tucked away in the middle of nowhere.. Get there early... Or late for the wildlife, else sit n chill in almost total silence.. Even the a64 (your next to it) disappears into the background.
W. G.
Enjoy a stroll along the circular boardwalk or venture off the path if you're feeling adventurous.
a. b.
It's a beautiful piece of nature. Quiet and teeming with wildlife! Such a lovely walk and many photographic opportunities!
p. s.
So worth a visit especially if the wildlife Trust are there. Fascinating history and beautiful now. Lots of wildlife including ponies
J. B.
A great place to get away from it all and to walk surrounded by nature. It doesn't matter when you go, there's always something to see.
D. B.
Great nature reserve, level boardwalk route so wheelchair/scooter friendly. Very peaceful.
A. G. (.
A nice place for a short walk. I look forward to dryer weather when we might venture off the board path to explore more :)
J. H.

C. N.

b. t.
Nice walk and interesting if you like looking out for things.
D. D.
Maybe last chance to enjoy this rare lowland bog and all its unusual plants and insects while it is still soggy and boggy since developers won a case that will threaten it's flooding.
M. T. O.
Good fun walk with young family. My 2 year old loved it
S. M.
Great place in York for a walk with plenty of wildlife
R. D.
Great walk on the boardwalk, saw plenty of birds. Walks off the boardwalk could do with being marked .

Great place for kids to play and a nice nature walk for the oldies.
