Reviews of National Trust - Treasurer's House, York
K. H.
We had a guided tour here, as it's not open to just walk around.
The guide was incredibly informative and happy to answer questions.
The rest of the team, who I'm guessing are all volunteers, were fabulous too. From the smiley greeter ladies on the door to the happy troops down in the cafe, everyone seemed genuinely happy to help!
We had a cup.of tea and some cake in the cafe then went on our hour long tour.
Beautiful house, with an interesting owner. I've been to York many times and have never visited the Treasurers House before, I'm glad it's finally ticked off my list!
Thanks guys!
J. S.
Noal was both funny and knowledgeable during our tour. He made the experience so much more. Wonderful time visiting this interesting house. Well worth visiting if in York
J. G.
What a revelation, from a small entrance off a cobbled street behind York Minster to a large house that was originally 3! Complete with banqueting Hall, concealed doors, sumptuous bedrooms and chandeliers. The tour was very informative with lots of history about Mr Green who donated the house and its treasures to the National Trust
B. C.
Tour of the house by a well informed guide. House was renovated & changed by the previous owner whose family had very high social aspirations. Social climbers but giving the house intact shows us exactly how he lived. Particularly beautiful small garden with a fabulous view of the cathedral.
G. G.
This is definitely worth booking! You get an hour guided tour of this beautiful house. You get to learn so much history and it’s honestly such a nice thing to do in York! The art , architecture within this house is breathtaking! Definitely worth going.
M. H.
Really enjoyed our visit here.
Though it was early November the small garden was still in bloom.
The guide who took us on the tour (approx. 1 hour) was very knowledgeable.
Would thoroughly recommend if you are interested in the history of York and the people who have shaped it's past and future.
C. C.
Excellent property and a first class tour guide. Quirky cafe with good food/drinks and great friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended.
P. C.
Got a place on the tour last minute. Was very informative and we both found it very interesting. Well worth a vist
W. S.
The best idea is to check the history before you visit, sometimes the volunteer guides don't give the whole story. Loved our visit.
M. M.
You can only visit this place via pre-booked organised tour. Just six of us in my group, they have lots of tours following each other, but keep the numbers small in each group.
Our guide, Noel, was excellent and explained the history of the house as well as giving us details of some of the beautiful furnishing in the rooms. The house in it's current form was created by Frank Green who joined three houses together and lived here from 1897 to 1930. In 1930 he donated the house, and all the contents which he had collected over many years, to the National Trust. His wish was that nothing was changed in the layout of the house, and that wish has by and large been adhered to.
The tour lasts one hour, there's something so nice about having some explaining all the features to you rather than having to read from information boards. It helps to bring this place alive.
P. R.
Very good guided tour of an eccentric billionaires house you do need to book.
Guide was knowledgable and funny which made it interesting. Recommend for NT members and non members
M. G.
Lovely national trust property and I really enjoyed the tour. I liked that the online booking was for the tour - made planning my day much easier. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and I learned a lot. The gardens are smaller than I had imagined but lovely nonetheless. The fragrance of the flowers was incredible.
K. o.
Fantastic historical site with a twist. The tour guide was great, very knowledgeable, with a few ghost stories thrown in
e. s.
Visit is a booked group of only 5 with a trust volunteer who takes you through a guided tour. We had Ann who was absolutely amazing and very knowledgeable about the house. We learned so much more than if we had just wandered around ourselves. Her enthusiasm made the visit.
E. C.
Staff very knowledgeable and the guided tour was very good. Such a great house very grand indeed.
M. C.
This is how you do a guided tour! Everybody seemed genuinely happy to work there. The house only does visiting by guided tour and I'm always a bit wary of them as sometimes they can drag. We needn't have worried. Our guide was Noel who I have to say was fantastic, really knew his stuff but didn't drag it out, plenty of humour too. It takes about an hour to go round the house but it flew by, you can see why it's guided too, if you went round on your own it would seem a bit of an odd place, on the tour you find out why it's the way it is. Would definitely recommend on a visit to York.
T. B.
A great hour, the guide knew her stuff.
N. M.
Have to go on a tour so get booked before you go or risk not getting on one.
Was detailed, possibly too detailed for our liking as used to just walking around and finding facts out as you want. But very interesting still.
r. m.
The guide was very pleasant and friendly. Staff also very friendly and the tour showed us a lot of the house. Gardens were brilliant with a view of the York minster. Lovely place to sit and enjoy the views.
A. P.
We had two tour guides who took it turns to inform us of the different rooms in the building. The rooms were all original at the previous owners request, he also stated that if anything was changed that he would come back and haunt them. Frank Green (the original owner) lived for a further 30 years after giving the building over to the National Trust. You have to book in advance.
B. H.
I had no idea this National Trust house was nestled in the centre of York and I really enjoyed our tour of the site! Booking is essential at the moment as there are only 5 spaces per tour every 15 minutes due to restrictions and they book up fast! Noel was our tour guide and he had excellent knowledge and made the tour very interesting, we did not expect a one hour guided tour of the property when booking tickets so this was an added bonus! The gardens are also beautiful however small but can be enjoyed by members for free when the house is open!
D. S.
This is a lovely house tucked in behind the york cathedral. It is owned by the national trust and has a small restaurant in the cellar. The garden is lovely in front of the house and it's hard to believe your in the city centre when your in it. We enjoyed our visit and had a guided tour. The kid's also were enjoying it as they had a quiz to do going around the house.
C. H.
Great house in an amazing location. We did the rooftop tour which was awesome, especially as we were the only people on it! It was great to see the old servants quarters relatively untouched. The house has had a makeover and the new cafe is beautiful. The gardens are a lovely place for a picnic too.
J. W.
great trip round this historic house. Guides very informative. Tea room cheese scones excelent. good coffee.
d. w.
Very interesting and the volunteer's are very knowledgeable. Nice to see a different side of the York Minster. Bit of a hidden gem as it's off the beaten track. The weather was against us so we couldn't go I to the gardens but as I have a national trust membership I will be going again
H. P.
Lovely house, and made it in time to join a tour as well included in the price. Such a strange man that built the house but brilliant. Walked through 4 different centuries through our history of stately homes. Very much worth a visit. Had a room which has a massive wow factor. Tour guides were amazing and wiling to answer any and all questions
P. W.
Well worth a visit. We had a very knowledgeable and entertaining guide who pitched it brilliantly for both adults and children.
P. G.
Very nice guided tour. Informative and interesting. Tea room worth a visit.
A. W.
Enjoy our visit to treasurers House. Had a guided tour which was very informative. Would recommend a visit
P. “.
Fantastic place to go and actually see how it was meant to be. House was left to the national trust on the condition it was left as it was. Rooms are well packed with furniture and items collected from all over the world. We loved it and spent a good few hours looking around
m. t.
This is an excellent stopping point near the Minster. The house is full of furniture and history, nicely decorated over Christmas. The garden is nice in summer times. The cafe in the basement is perfect for an afternoon tea and has some food as well. Overall, the house is worth to stop by at any time of the year.
a. v.
A very quirky place and well worth a visit. For a start the gardens at the front are very beautifully done. Once inside, you get such an incredible mixture of rooms decorations in all different styles, done in such eccentricity, that you will be amazed at every turn.
D. H.
Lovely place to visit. There is a Lego toys trail for the kiddies, and of course for grown ups, if that takes your fancy.
I find having something out of the ordinary to look for, means I pay more attention to the other parts of the building.
G. T.
Great place to visit.
D. V.
A lovely small property all dressed for Christmas. The staff were very helpful.
S. H.
Fascinating place. Knowledgeable friendly tour guides, interesting history, lovely garden and great cafe. Well worth a visit.
A. W.
A fascinating house with an eclectic collection of paintings and artefacts. Our guide was very knowledgeable.
G. K.
A gem of a NT property. Wearing its unoriginal badge with pride. An eccentric assortment of interiors across the centuries as imagined and realised by its wealthy owner. Well worth a visit for the lovely garden with the spectacular view of the Minster.
B. “. B. W.
Booked in for 1 hour guided tour. Very interesting, the tour was well worth it to understand better the background and history of the property right in the City centre immediately adjacent to York Minster.
G. W.
Fascinating house with an excellent guided tour. Certainly worth a visit to hear the story of the previous owner.
M. W.
Geoff and Sue gave an amazing tour of the house that brought it to life and made this the highlight of our day in York. Thank you. Witch's balls and split mirrors!
R. W.
This is a most interesting house, mainly as I was lucky enough to get on one of rare tours of the attic to servant quarters and also get to go on the roof, guide was most informative. They also run ocassional tours of the cellars where they have excavated old Roman road and apperently people have seen phantom Roman legion walking down the road.
S. W.
Free to enter the gardens. Admission fee to go into the house. Lovely place to sit & relax.
M. R.
Fascinating tour. Only takes an hour but a lovely place to visit.
G. B.
Historicaly interesting. Brought to life by guides throughout the building. Almost a hidden gem. Interesting Cafe with good food. Small, but lovely garden (open to public)
Well worth the visit .
S. B.
House was ok. We did the ghost tour which was just a short walk down the cellar if that's what u call it. Also someone told us about a sighting that happened back in the 60s and last sighting was 1970. But the rest of the house was worth a visit.
T.
Tea room features exposed wooden beams and a stone flooring, it can get busy during weekends but serves lovely food and the staff are friendly. The garden is a really peaceful and tranquil place to sit on a nice day or after a visit to the house and tea room.
M. A.
This is a fascinating building, full of character and interest. There is a lot to see but you need to be able to go up stairs. The garden was good with good views of the house and the Minster. I gave 4 stars as you could only visit by guided tour, which meant you could not have a good look at some things. Hopefully one day you can visit without a tour. I understand the need for this but is still a shame.
M. D.
A very interesting and eclectic collection. Beautiful tranquil garden near York Minster.
J. F.
Treasurer's House. Wonderful peaceful garden, and an extremely informative tour of the house given be by Carys the National Trust volunteer...thank you so much
L.
It's the volunteers that make this place. You could walk round and not think much about it, but the volunteers explain the story behind this house which makes it so interesting. It's right in the middle of York centre next to the Minster. The building is meant to be haunted and the story relating to one if the rooms with the apparent old woman ghost is fascinating and rather chilling. We didn't do the cellar tour as there was a bit of a wait, but we may do it next time we visit.
N. M.
Although we have not been inside but the gardens were lovely, bonus gem the lady with long nails who murdered her husband haunts this place.
m. h.
Well I just started working here as a cleaner a lovely place to visit if you come to York and a warm welcome from all the national Trust staff and maybe you might see a spirit or two situated next to York Minster would be a lovely day out for all the family
L. D.
Surprisingly interesting for a small property, the tour was very informative.
J. D.
Such a calming garden after the bustle of York centre! Friendly staff and nice tea room - beautiful house - well worth a visit!
L. W.
Beautiful peaceful garden which I was surprised that you didn't need to pay for ( Just as well as my husband had forgotten his membership card!!!)
J. B.
Interesting pseudo-stately concoction by the 19th/eary 20th century heir to a business fortune. House was guided tour only by someone who did his job but seemed not really receptive to questions or conversation. National Trust so worth a visit for members.
N. L. M.
Beautiful house with a fantastic history especially the ghost tour. Loved the history of how the house came about and was decorated after notable visitors had left as well as the shock of 245 great historic properties lost over the years. Well worth a visit.
H. K.
A funny but interesting property in the heart of York. Doesn't have much of its own history but Frank Green has a great collection of furniture here & the tour guides are knowledgeable.
T. W.
Fantastic place to go, whilst visiting York.
All volunteers were very helpful. The ghost tour 👻 is not too spooky 😁
I. G.
Well worth a visit, guided tour really interesting. You can visit the garden for free.
p. g.
Just turned up .didn't book .but was taken round by 2 lovely ladies .a lovely place .well worth a visit
S. J.
A lovely house that is much recommended. It's a worthwhile visit, plus the garden is free access to the public.
A. H.
Doing the best to give a covid safe customer experience.
A. D.
Lovely and very interesting place to visit whilst exploring York. A hidden gem! All the staff were welcoming and informative, our tour guide Ann was very knowledgeable, funny, informative and made the tour one of the best. The house itself is very quirky and interesting. Will definitely be returning next time.
M.
very interesting tour , fascinating rooms put together more like stage sets to create fascinating interiors for the guests of the period . pleasant and relaxing gardens as well. peaceful, yet close to the minster and centre.
N. G.
Nice place. Great tour guides they know their stuff
C. I.
Found out a lot because there was a guide . Could have had more time in the garden.
T. P.
Very interesting, the interior is not what you expect from the outside view.
C. M.
Love this place. A hidden treasure in the heart of York with the Minster as a neighbour. Welcoming, informative staff in every room, gingerbread men trail and a Xmas tree in every room at the minute. Learn something new every time I visit.
B. H.
Very interesting as are all the National Trust properties, with lovely knowledgeable guides
K. B.
I really enjoyed going around here, but would love to go again.
S. M.
Couldn't get into the house today as was fully booked. Guided tours only at the moment. 16.4.2022
G. C.
Really interesting. Beautiful old house. Well informed guide.
L.
What a fabulous place. Particularly knowledgeable young man as our guide.
p. o.
Fabulous please to see. Go and see it. Enjoy
R. C.
Helpful staff and interesting place to visit. 2 hrs will allow you to see the building and grounds adequately.
R. B.
A fascinating 1920s reconstruction of several much older buildings into an extraordinary town house. Located just behind the Minster, it is in the perfect position to give views of the Chapter House and north transept.
Beautifully restored and furnished as it would have been between the wars, the story of the house and its owner is well told. The volunteer guides are all knowledgable and so enthusiastic
There is a great cafe in the basement, selling lovely home made food.
Well worth a visit, though there isn't a great deal to interest young children.
J. L.
Very knowledgeable guide very different building, lots of standing booked for 1230hrs tour started1245hrs we were on a tight schedule and had to leave early, missed the slide show.
G. D.
Wonderful gardens and an interesting house to spend a couple of hours exploring. As it acknowledges some parts are slightly mixed in their styles but it gives an insight into the rather eccentric original owner. The volunteers also gave a good overview of how the house came into being.
D. S.
Very interesting, largely because of the eccentric owner who created a very strange building. Each room has been done in a different style to illustrate the styles used in England over the centuries. Some truly remarkable antiques. I very much liked the fact that the museum volunteer in each room provided a lot of interesting facts about the room and its contents. Made the visit very memorable.
C. D.
Great tour, very informative
C. J. V. d. W.
Really cool place to visit. The tours were insightful and interesting, getting to see plenty of the house and hear some stories as well. The garden is small but beautifully maintained and the contents of the house is stunning. A good trip when in York. (Best to combine with a trip to the Minster).
p.
Tour quite long but very informative.
I. d. B.
A beautiful historical house and such a peaceful garden in the hart of York. Guided tours are very interesting and engaging. Highly recommended.
C. C.
Beautifully decorated for Christmas.
N. H.
Beautifully decorated for Xmas. Very enthusiastic staff explaining the history and various ghost sightings
P. A. P. C.
Was a good tour. Would recommend
C. B.
Really interesting house and a great tour
M. B.
Really nice house. The tour takes about 1 hour. It was busy today but they still managed to fit me in despite no booking.
J. E.
Quirky NT property right in the centre of York. No parking though.
A. D.
Very interesting with a brilliant tour guide
T. F.
A treasure in York which I just stumbled across. Some very resourceful guides who were very keen to talk but knew little on engaging children. Downstairs, the Cafe was lovely and a whole room dedicated to one man's apparent ghostly experience seemed over the top. Definitely worth a visit as you pass the cathedral.
S.
The house is nice to walk around and to hear the history.
Tip - if the weather permits, head out into the garden for a quiet sit down & enjoy the calm in the shadow of the Minster.
Also, the cafe in the basement is usually a quiet place for coffee & cake. You don't need to pay the National Trust or be a member to enter the Cafe - they let you in this area for free :)
Y. D.
Very interesting place and lovely knowledgeable staff
C. R. (.
I love history but the last thing I ever enjoy having to do is stare at something with no history. I was not disappointed with this marvellous National Trust exhibition. The tour guide Liz was fantastic and super helpful. There are many volunteers who are on hand to answer questions as you walk around the house freely. The owner was the industrialist Frank Green who restored the modern house.
As I am also into the paranormal, I enjoyed this immensely because it has historical references to everything from Roman history through medieval times, and up to Edwardian history. I defy anyone who doesn't dislike historical tours to dislike this one. They have examples of untouched attics from Edwardian times and Roman architecture in the same house for goodness sake. Wow!
Oh and although this building doesn't have luggage lockers, there is a Left Luggage office where you can leave items for £5 each. York is one of my favourite tourist locations, and this is one of my most memorable locations. Every section of the place is riddled with history.
Also I definitely recommend the yummy food. Local leek and pork sausage sandwiches were so delicious that they reminded me how nice food really can be.
A. K.
Spent a good couple of hours here with my grandparents. The volunteers were lovely and also told us some really interesting things about the house and the objects in it. There are also activities to keep children occupied throughout the house and lovely little garden at the front of the house. Being in the centre of York it is ideal for a day out with the family!
S. M.
Lovely place to visit whilst exploring York! All the staff and volunteers were so Lovely, welcoming and informative. The house itself was beautiful. Keep an eye out upstairs for the clock with such a long pendulum!
V. H.
A beautifully restored 17th century house hidden from view behind the Minster. Spent an interesting couple of hours here. There were knowledgeable NT volunteers in every room and plenty of printed info about the house's history and the eccentric owner who bought and restored it to house his collection of antiques. Each room reflects a different period, some of them are rather dark because of their deep colours but the furniture and the grand staircase are wonderfully ornate. They do guided tours of the house and also the cellars which were built above an old Roman road and are reputedly haunted by marching Roman soldiers. The basement has a small gift shop, very clean toilets and a café where I had a delicious quiche with new potatoes and salad. Especially loved the garden, a peaceful little haven with pretty blue and white flowers - Frank Green's favourite colours - and a fantastic view of the Minster.
D. T.
A wonderful place with so much history. The guides answered all my questions and were very knowledgeable. In the shadow of York Minster.
A. S.
Guided tour was excellent, tour guide very intetesting and informative. Lovely house and garden. Highly recommend a visit
D. E.
WOW 😎!! A must place to visit. A real historic gem in the heart of York. Staff on duty were very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and made our visit special.
J. S.
A lovely historic building. They offer to store bags etc whilst you look around. Limited opening hours was main drawback for me and the cafe was heaving. Some room stewards almost force you to listen to thier spiel, very well presented by them and in friendly way. They know the history of the building but didn't feel able to just take time to look in some rooms. However it was a most enjoyable visit.
S. R.
Wonderful staff, gorgeous gardens and plenty to see. What better way to spend 2 hours? Staff were only to happy to answer questions about the furniture and other exquisite items. A must see. Thoroughly recommend
C. W.
An interesting experience seeing earlier preservation attempts and the use of older furniture to create an 'age'. The colour scheme is interesting as is the clock and bedroom. The entry is free for Trust members. Cafe and toilets downstairs, easy access to ground floor only. Easily found at the Cathedral area.
A. H.
Absolutely fascinating building with an interesting history. The NT guides were so friendly and informative it really enhanced our visit. Great café in the basement with usual selection of great cakes.
l. k.
One of the best houses I have visited. It's not very big. But it has some great people inside to explain the fantastic history. The food in the cafe just as fantastic, and wonderful coffee.
p. H.
It's lovely garden &nice place to visit but don't forget to pre-book before you go (maximum 5-6 person/group)
K. D.
The volunteers here are TERRIFIC. They really help to bring the story behind this interesting and impressive home to life. The place is set up exactly as it was when the owner of the home had it while he lived there. Pretty eccentric guy. Ask about the tiny nails on the floor under some of the furniture. Great for a quick stop if you're near the minster.
A. D.
The Treasurers house was made better by the guide that took our small group through the very different rooms. All the history was explained well.
R. C.
Nice National Trust house with beautiful interior
C. D.
Great Guided Tour. Some interesting pieces around the House, especially the Painting whose Shoes and Eyes follow you.
It's a shame that part of the house was closed off to us when we visited, so maybe check the National Trust App or Website if you wanted to see the whole thing.
P. D.
Interesting property close to York Minster. Fabulous garden. Good tour around the house with one of the excellent guides.
N. B.
Lovely old house very close to York Minster staffed by knowledgeable and helpful National Trust volunteers. Lovely garden open to everyone to relax in which is a haven of peace and quiet after the hustle and bustle of Yorks often busy shopping streets. Cafe is in the cellars and worth a visit for a light snack and/or a cup of tea.
m. g.
Lovely house with extensive history. Good, cafe serving great food. A little off the beaten tourist track in York but worth finding for a bit of peace and calm in the busy city. Try the cellar tour if you have time.
G. B.
Easy walk from train station hidden behind the minster. Beautiful old house with quirky history. Guide was very knowledgeable and made it very interesting and amusing. Tea and cake in cellar ok. All staff very pleasant.
M. M.
Really interesting house filled with amazing furniture such as the ivory table set. The house is next to York Minster, so very conveniently located in central York. The volunteers were friendly and very informative. A real treasure! Would definitely come back again and recommend it to anyone in York. We zipped through in about 40mins but you could linger longer easily.
A. F.
Well worth a visit. A house with a very mixed history and now frozen in a state requested by Frank Green who passed it on to the National Trust in 1930. The tour of the attic provides a fantastic insight to the way in which the serving staff coexisted with their employer.
G. S.
An interesting house, but rather confusing. The owner who donated it turned it into a medieval, Georgian, combination. The furniture and paintings are nice but the house only took about 30 min to go through. There are far more authentic houses to tour in the city.
A. H.
Lovely building. A national treasure. Great staff volunteers who are very approachable and informative.
A. W.
Hidden gem in the city centre with amazing views of the Minster that are seen less often by the general public.
r. c.
Beautiful garden and lovely sitting area outside. Very relaxing. Inside is very well kept. Tours of the attic and the haunted cellar were informative and fun.
D. J.
Nice national trust property in the middle of York. As expected, plenty of interesting history on your doorstep. Really knowledgeable and friendly staff are on hand to help you make the most of the visit. Good quality cafe on site as well.
V. W.
Very interesting property more of a story of one man's vision than a historical record but facsinating all the same. His reasons behind his actions are explained in the little video tucked away on the way to the cafe. Came away with thoughts of what could be done if we bought the houses either sides of us in our terrace. 😊 Lots of volunteers to ask questions of too. Nice cafe in the basement.
j. J.
A very interesting tour Not exactly what I thought the house was.
The personal small group tour was very good We enjoyed the tour
J. F.
The story of Frank Green, the industrialist, who owned this property from 1897 until about 1930. He knocked three tenements into one and created a Great Hall with rooms for all his VIPs as well as servants living quarters in the Attic. There was central heating and a lift for the maidservants. He had the Royal Family to stay shortly after Queen Victoria died and had some of the bedrooms named after the Royal visitors. There is a beautiful garden at the front of the house too. Plus a gift shop and coffee shop.
K. S.
Great place to visit with lots of history and we appreciated the very informative volunteers in every room, giving us a real feel for what happened in the house. Lovely cafe downstairs as well.
V.
Thought we'd pop in for a quick look and found it to be much bigger and more interesting than expected. A really unusual place. Tea rooms in the cellar really appealing. Will go back again probably for a more leisurely visit.
K. O.
Wonderful building in the back yard of yorkminster. A lot of historic eras covered as well as a presentation of these types of buildings and their upkeap more generally. As with all national trust locations, the staff were fantastic, so knowledgeable and passionate.
A. B.
It was a nice house to look around. The rooms were well layed out. Lots of goods information available throughout the house. It doesn't take long to get around the house, which is why I knocked 1 star off. Other than that its a nice wonder around the house.
T. T. T.
A very nice little garden.
J. S.
Interesting to visit and learn about Mr Green....who possibly haunts the place. Especially if a piece of furniture is moved.
made more interesting by the two volunteer guides who took us round in a group.
N. H.
A lovely way to spend an hour or so looking at this wonderful but slightly confusing house just behind the Minster. If possible, get on one of the two special tours they offer. The garden is small but lovely.
N. C.
Well worth a visit, went round on the free heritage weekend but would have paid. Staff gave talks in all of the rooms. Very knowledgeable which adds to the entertainment of the visit. Very nice cafe in the basement.
T. “. C.
The history and evolution of the building is interesting and well explained by volunteer guides and clear information in the rooms. Takes about 75 mins excluding optional tours.
R. M.
Lovely gardens at the side of the Minster.
K. N.
Guided tour was excellent. Very interesting. Covid compliant at all times.
Well worth a visit.
S. M.
Enjoyed our time here and added the extra two tours, one to the cellar and one to the attic rooms. Guide was entertaining and informative as were the others who were in each area around the house.
J. M.
Set right next door to the glorious York Minster, this is a lovely property to visit. The question is, has it been over developed by the doner or not? I think so, but others will have different views! What is unique is the joining of 2 houses, which seems to work. What would it have been like to live in? 🤔
S. H.
Lovely house and a big history lesson about the house. I just want to say a big thank you to all the staff members dotted around the house, there all so full of knowledge about the house and Frank Green and seem to really love there job. There a credit to the house and Frank Green himself.
B. W.
Bit cold and gloomy, hence just 4 *, made the decorations very moody, though. Could have done with a roaring log fire somewhere. Food in cafe excellent value. All staff very friendly and helpful.
D. S.
Lovely old house full of Frank Green's interesting collection of antiques. We enjoyed the house and it's contents very much however the experience was somewhat spoiled by staff who had obviously been instructed to buttonhole visitors entering each room and deliver a rehearsed speech.
I also disliked the gimmicky and misleading presentation of Frank Green's restoration as a 'creation'; as though it had never really existed as a house. Not sure of the point of this.
The perspex boxes of coloured counters and the scattered bits of Lego
seemed out of place and pointless; Is this an attempt to make it more accessible and visitor friendly? It has the the opposite effect and spoils the mood of the house.
S. R.
It's an interesting house but I'm afraid it's been priced far too highly. We were offered a cellar tour for an extra four pounds each which consisted of walking down into a single small room whilst someone told us an old ghost story that has been doing the rounds for about 50 years. Very hard sell on the national trust membership also. Ask once, if the answer is no then that's it. To keep asking is rude and embarrassing.
D. P.
History in a beautiful house with York Minster as neighbours
S. G.
Excellent loads of history would recommend
C. N.
We thoroughly enjoyed the attic tour. This is a special additional tour they add when they have appropriate staffing levels. The house is lovely and we ate a hearty meal in the cosy basement restaurant.
R. M.
Lovely house with a variety of furniture and rooms to compliment. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable.
C. M.
Picturesque old house with beautiful lawn, run by the national trust.
D. R.
Very interesting and quirky building, the national trust staff are easy to listen to and happy to answer any questions.
J. P. C.
Very interesting. Loved the quirky layout, the furniture and some of the artwork. Lovely cafe, very good friendly and informative guides. Neat little garden.
L. G.
As a member of the NT and being in York I couldn't skip this attraction and I'm happy I didn't. A very odd building with many styles and a nice small garden it is worth seeing as there isn't much else like it
P. S.
An eclectic mix of furniture and art with a stunning garden open free to the public. The NT guides are so knowledgeable and the garden is a lovely retreat for all to enjoy.
S. S.
A hidden gem behind York Minster. With a slightly strange history, this house is both the usual National Trust old house offering, and a lovely quiet garden with superb views of the monster away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist centre.
A. M.
Excellent guide showed us around. Timing just long enough and really helpful in understanding the life of the house. Beautiful house and garden in the shadow of York Minster.
X. T.
Very well kept place and definitely interesting, volunteers here are welcoming and there is information about each room to be picked up in the rooms about Frank, the man who restored and lived in the property using the money made from his ancestors business as a very quick summary, as well as two other topics including one focusing on the rooms contents, all positioned and how they were since he gave to property to the national trust, I believe it was the first property that the national trust obtained
L. M.
Little gem in York near the minster. As NT member free to get in but can't say about the cost to non members. Fascinating family history and Frank Green has created a different era in each room. Coffee shop in basement.
M. S.
Interesting house with unusual historical background. Frank Green refurbished 100 or so years ago making it look how he thought it should be and in the process he made lots of internal changes but saved furniture from other old houses being sold off by the impecunious local gentry.
J. R.
Interesting house, the result of one man's phantasy & obsession, so don't expect historical accuracy.
A. B.
Steep staircase and a musky smell, the house is interesting. Do not recommend the cafe. It's small, in the cellar, consequently it's dark and not the most pleasant environment to eat.
N. M. B.
It's very historical house. No parking onsite. We opted park and ride option.it has antique furniture and valuable treasures. Its national trust property and free entry to members.
R. H.
Interesting house and our tour guide really knew a lot about the history of the house and owner
I. H.
Lovely place to spend a day. Very interesting
T. A.
A beautiful building that had been transformed by a previous eccentric owner, with different periods of history depicted in separate rooms. There is a preserved Roman Road in the cellar, just look out for the ghost soldiers.
J. K.
Lovely house with lots of original furniture and an excellent tour guide
I. D.

Little and wonderfully historical. Located in the heart of the city a little hideaway. Feels like you are somewhere else once inside. A tad expensive for what it is if you don't have a National Trust card.
