Reviews of York Shambles
a. n.
What an amazing place like being on the set off Harry Potter. Kids loved it .just make sure you take plenty off money as there is so much your kids will want 🤣🤣 some great places to eat and seeing the roman army march down the road was brill and loads so street performances going on will be back .what a lovely place york is and so many things to do
I. A.
Walking on this street is like being cast into medieval time with all those ancient timbered houses, perched on narrow, winding streets...
Unforgettable experience! Fabulous!!
" Neither one thing nor the other" And plenty of things to see here, indeed. Such a pleasurable pastime ING...
M. G.
Not sure what I was expecting, was I disappointed, maybe just a little bit. I was probably expecting more lanes.
The shops are great, really odd and unusual, random and wonderful, however as I said, just not quite what I expected.
Very busy, as I assume it is every day.
The buildings are beautiful though. I would recommend visiting though.
L. R.
Always been pretty crowded whenever I've visited but it has a nice atmosphere. Has a lot of beautiful buildings and shops to explore!
T. M.
A truly wonderful throwback to the medieval times. You can sense the history as you walk down this famous street. Beautiful, at times eerie but always a treat to walk down. Some lovely little shops too.
k. r. p. a. a.
Such an amazing little place with some great shops highly recommend going. If your a Harry Potter fan you will love it
K. B.
Quirky old shopping street with an eclectic mix of shops. It was very busy and narrow.
R. J.
I love these old buildings. Definitely worth a trip to see if you're even in York. Great little independent shops.
M. D.
Must place to visit in York. Some great indeoendent shops and plenty of little food places for everyones taste. If you are a Harry Potter fan this is a must place to visit too....
P. G.
Worth a visit, lots to see plenty of history
N. C.
Absolutely fantastic,. Old
N very Historic ally's. Open top {RED} tour bus around YORK is highly recommended..👻❤️👻
K. B.
Lovely historical street in the heart of York with the Minster at one end. Full of touristy shops and plenty of Harry Potter'esque shops to keep kids occupied. Some well priced pubs too.
T.
Lovely little area of york a must see. Very historic feel like you've just stepped into a time machine. Nice little shops if your looking to pick up any gifts on your trip to york.
2. D.
This was an amazing place and such an experience to visit. The building are very old and wonky so interesting to see how they are still up. The streets are cobbled and mostly pedestrianised. So safe to walk along and look into the shops. There are some ships with a difference also, like the Wizards shop and flavoured tea shops etc. It is well worth a visit.
I parked at the peel Street car park for 3hrs for £5.60 and walked here which took about 20-25 min.
R.
Awesome old street with beautiful shops out and inside. It's charming to walk around there in the morning or even when it's dark. It's s an special place that you shouldn't miss if you visit York. Take a look of the shops, taste a fabulous traditional pork pie or even a tea in one of its tiny cafes. Also has a middle line ready for wheelchairs.
F.
WOW such a great lovely place to visit lots of 18th Century buildings in quirky narrow cobbled streets stores galore! selling fudge, clothes, gift stores, quaint little stores which sell everything , ghost walks are also popular, cake stores, cafes, coffee shops, eateries, pubs to dine in, open market daily, with every stall imaginable.
Highly recommend visiting here we had a really lovely time, with bars, restaurants serving delicious food!
P. K.
Great place for visit. Medieval architecture is still alive in these small shops and narrow streets. A "must see" for each tourist that visit York. Also a great attraction for children - main street looks totally alike Diagon Alley from Harry Potter books. Highly recommended!
R. A.
Best to visit in a weekday, but what an amazing little street. Full of quirky shops and a lovely atmosphere.
Watch fudge be made, have a drink of tea, buy some cuff links or stroke a stuffed llama.
Make sure you get yourself to the Shambles Market as well down the back.
L. F.
Incredible picturesque preserved medieval street. The narrow leaning medieval buildings include quirky cafes, boutique stores and even a few Harry Potter gift shops! Well worth a visit!
C. K.
Nice vibe
A. S.
Classy old town with lot of wood based structures.. interesting pubs and full of joy. We travelled from Leeds city center to the York via train. It took 22 mins and we roamed the area, Abbey, cathedrals and visited few pubs for the drink. Make sure to use express transpenne which goes directly non stop to the York.
S. W.
Nice architectural street but overrun by Harry Potter. Great if you love Harry Potter though.
P. R.
Great place to walk through. A must for Harry Potter fans..
Plenty of places to eat.
D. V.
Lovely quaint little street filled with quirky shops. (Most are a bit pricey!) Worth a visit
M. P.
Lots of nice cobbled streets, few Harry Potter shops. Would recommend if in area
L. B.
Always worth visiting when in York. Quaint little cobbled street of Independent Stores selling a range of quirky things and food also. Street inspired the design of Diagon Alley in Harry Potter films so you can find lots of Harry Potter inspired stores. Backs onto York Street Market where you can find lots of bargains.
M. B.
A great look at what York streets might have looked like. Quirky but overpriced shops. Still very much worth a visit.
d.
The famous and picturesque spot of York. Very nice to take a walk there, especially on Saturdays when the local flea market takes place. During the summer it gets very crowded so I would suggest to be careful.
L. M. (.
Well worth a visit with lots of sight seeing 😉 if you like your History or just some shopping 👍
L. R. (.
A historic street with beautiful architecture that is adorned with gift shops: Harry Potter shops, fudge and handmade beauty. The market offers different food selection or grab some cheese and bread and home to eat.
d. j.
Absolutely Devine. My favourite place to go. Something to look at in every nook and cranny. You can shop and explore from sun up till sun down and so many places to eat and drink... Christmas is do beautiful in York, especially the shambles and the Christmas Market had to be experienced. When we went in December there was an ice sculpture exhibit all over York x
P. P.
Must stop for Harry Potter fans. Walk down the alley of some of the oldest shops.
S. E.
A little disappointing as the houses did not "hang" over the street as much as expected. Quaint shops adorn each side of the street. Home made fudge shops, old sweat shops. cheese specialists, hand crafted jewellery shops, plenty of pubs and tea rooms and cafes. Pricing reflects the location and therefore comes at a premium. Still a pleasant walk
L. B.
A great city to visit, a place for everyone , a walk round the city walls and the York Minster is a must! beautiful old cobbled streets and lots of history.
P. R.
It's great to just wander and lose yourself in this place. Loads of snappy clothes shops, off the beaten path items, charity, art, you name it. Take a day and see the Minster which isn't far either.
R. K.
Great visit to the Shambles, really enjoyed the narrow streets, market square and the little nooks and crannies.
G. L.
One of the coolest streets I have ever been to. Lots.of souvenir and Harry potter shops. Much better than the old dirty butchery it was.
R. H.
Narrow street full of historical interest. Not for the claustrophobic at it tends to be a tourist bottleneck. Unfortunately every other shop seems to have jumped on the Harry Potter bandwagon which has changed the uniqueness of the street. Worth a visit early in the morning to see it empty of crowds.
J. A.
Fantastic Harry Potter themed shops. Our journey into the magical realm was a joy. We had so much fun fighting off the dementors.
h. l.
This place is absolutely like the scene in harry potter, Diagon Alley. The buildings are so unique and fun. Lots of shops, arts, restaurant over here. York is famous of chocolate. Recommended to buy york chocolate here.
E. D.
Lovely shops, lovely tourist place, history here is beyond belief. Lovely quaint little place, like something from a movie...Harry Potter... Smells of fudge being made was delicious. Great range of shops available and lovely traditional street. Has great feel to it especially at Christmas!!!
c. p.
Get there early or go a bit later to avoid the crowds and to be able to get some decent photos. Make sure you look down the side streets for more photo opportunities.
H. M.
The shambles is one of the most popular places in York. Harry potter fans will find this place amazing as there is roughly 4 or 5 shops all based on Harry potter however there is also other shops. The only problem I had was is that it was crowded with people and difficult sometimes to get through the crowd 😜😜
A. M.
The shambles are a collection of old buildings from circa 1350 to 1475 which now operate as small businesses selling everything from tourist tat to teabags, glassware to garments. York is rich with history and architecture alike and just a small walk away through the shambles is York minster.
M. Y.
As a Harry Potter fan that I am, my experience was magical. I have no words to describe exactly what really is be there. If you want to take great photos, the best time is after 6pm or before 9am because in The Shambles there is always a lot of people.
T. H.
Amazing place, loads of different shops, pubs, taverns and tea rooms. Lot's of little cobbled side streets to get lost in and all the people are really nice and helpful. A truly beautiful and unspoiled place.
K. S.
If you're going to York it's a must to visit. Nice market and lively atmosphere. Food stalls as well.
B. H. (.
An historical street within the centre of York that also has a market square.
The streets are more or less lined with tourist shops. These range from sweet stores to Harry Potter merchandise stores.
The street itself is worth seeing however it is quite narrow and can get crowded quite quickly.
G. P.
Got there a 9am had a great Day, plenty of shops & plenty too do. Highley recommend visit.
G. H.
Loved walking through the cobbled streets with the buildings close together. Loads of little shops, bars and restaurants. Just wonderful.
S. A.
This place was amazing.cobbled streets and quaint shops.it reminded me alot like dagon alley from Harry Potter.
A. W.
Very unique and interesting especially people whose following Harry Potter film.
B. C.
A very historic place..well worth a visiting... Also visit the Yorick Centre good for kids lots to see and a ride as well.. use the pre-booking, as you can skip the long line/queue..
C. P.
The oldest operational street in the world - it is also the street that Diagon Alley in Harry Potter is based on and you can really feel that. If you are a Harry Potter fan you need to visit this street! It was quite something seeing this part of history. It's worth a visit!
J. L.
What a place! Save yourself the Harry Potter mumbo jumbo and head straight for the alpaca shop - kooky knitwear, finger puppets and artificial guinea pigs are the order of the day. Now where's my Llama Pyjama...
W. R.
The best guided walking tour.. The best cupcakes and coffee from Crumbs cupcakery.. York minster.. The Shambles... Unforgettable!
J. C.
Go for it if u r a harry potter fan..
J. B.
A great street to get a glimpse of the past , gets very crowded especially Friday evening between 5pm and 7pm as they have fake snow blowing down on the crowds , it is also a stop off point for the bus ghost tour 👍
N. D.
A fabulous ancient cobbled street, which is how I always think of York if I hear people speaking of it. We enjoyed finding the cats on the buildings (The Lucky Cat shop has a free map outside for help finding some of them) as it meant we took a different approach to walking around this wonderful city. York is a photographers dream, especially if you love characterful buildings, and even more so if you’re willing to get up literally at the crack of dawn to have it to yourself!
J. M.
York is a fantastic place for shopping, eating, history, site seeing, and alllll of the walking. Always best to use one of the many park and rides to get into the city as parking in the city is expensive and near impossible.
J. P.
Medevil narrow street in the centre of York. Number of different gift shops, tea rooms, cafes, chocolate shop and a small pub. One of the shops called "the shop that must not be named". A must see street in York.
A. A.
The Shambles will take you back hundreds of years with its very lovely and amazing stores’ fronts. It is one of the most interesting streets I have ever been and worth visiting again. Different stores with different colors make even more attractive. Stagnant water after rains will give you another interesting view.
B. W.
My family had great fun exploring the independent shops and quirky Harry Potter themed gift shops in The Shambles. We especially liked the potions shop halfway down. Beautiful old buildings too.
C. S.
Amazing place lots of things to see street food was excellent
H.
It is said that Harry Potter film maker has come here for inspiration of Diagon Alley. Enjoyed a relaxing walk on this short street with visits to a couple of Harry Potter stores selling franchised products and some shops for Christmas decoration at this time of the year.
J. B.
Quirky, very small though. Try the chocolate shop, they do chocolate shots with edible chocolate glass, so yummy.
J. M.
"The Shambles" in York is a top place to visit for any Harry Potter fan, foodaholic or quirky shop enthusiast. There's loads to see, loads to eat and has so much history in the area you can dive into. Plenty of mainstream chain shops and restaurants as well as local independent hot spots and delicacies to explore in and around "The Shambles" definitely would recommend to anyone!
Y. L.
If you take pictures go to early before 9am or 6pm otherwise so much crowded. And they have shop for Harry Potter mania but also long lines best time is near closing time if you need buy some items.
K. T.
It's brilliant.Great atmosphere quirky shops and something for everyone
G. W.
Absolutely fantastic place. Feels like you’ve stepped back in time. lots of shops and food outlets which are very reasonably priced. Perfect for Harry Potter fans too.
J. G.
A great place to see a living example of a medieval street. Surprised to see just how many Harry Potter shops that are now there (at least 4).
A. L.
Beautiful city, full of history & lovely artisan shops - a joy to walk round especially when dressed for the festive season!!!
G. P.
This an amazing old street that really makes you fell like medieval age, it's full of history beautiful architecture and old stores.
Stores open very early in the morning and close very soon in the afternoon make sure you visit in time.
S. B.
Lovely street with lots of quaint little shops. Worth a visit but it's quite busy and access for prams/buggies can be quite difficult even without all the people walking along the street.
J. S.
The Shambles is definitely worth a visit. The buildings are incredible. Amazing they have survived so long. Shops are a mixed bag of tourist souvenir shops, cafes etc. Lovely medieval street. Have heard it was an inspiration for Diagon Alley which seems very plausible.
L. D.
Felt like going back in time seeing the old style streets and buildings. Good collection of shops and eateries too. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the city!
f. s.
This street looks fabulous however it is way too busy a lot of the time making walking through it difficult and dangerous in brolly season. Disappointed to see there are now four "wizardy" type shops opened in a year. Such a shame. I hope it doesn't get any worse, diversity it key in good shopping areas.
Check out the ghost walk at 19.30pm every night from here. We'll worth a try.
S. M.
Such an Amazing place an Great nice stroll with all shops around to get what u fancy
K. V.
Such great historical buildings. Always busy though, as they're popular, so be prey for lots of people. Wear sensible shoes too, because if the old cobbled roads.
C. Y.
A nice set of streets to walk around. Very touristy. Not being a Harry Potter fan, I find its real history more interesting.
Y. N.
Amazing old, enjoyed the markets a few local identities there so a lot of fun. Tried a Cornish pastry which wasn't too bad.
K. R.
Absolutely stunning street with all ye ole shops.
Definately recommend you see it at night also.
e. p.
Such a beautiful place with loads of history and quaint little shops
O. K.
Beautiful place lots of people in the day late evening is much better
R. M.
A nice little walk along old Street and cobblestone roads ,old fronted shops and lots of little shops and alleyways to find ..
N. S. R.
Truly a stunning place. Loads of interesting shops, amazing photo opportunities, amazing architecture.
If you plan on visiting York, whether it be a short stop or a lengthy stay, you need to visit the Shambles.
Lots of Harry Potter themed stores, lots of stores selling classic boardgames, swords, even armour and of course lots of Viking themed stores.
Overall a brilliant place and you haven't seen York if you haven't seen the Shambles.
There's something for everyone here.
D. G.
Lovely narrow street will take you to the old times. Good shops with their unique shop front.
M. P.
Stunning.
A nostalgic walk through very old streets. The Tudor (and older?) buildings are superb, leaning over the road. Lots of shops and the Saturday market, just down an alley off the Shambles, is well worth a visit.
W. C.
Loved the place and the Tudor style buildings. Dont forget to visit the harry potter street get fish and chips at Drakes
I. G.
I'm a Uni of York alumna so it's always great to revisit my undergrad city. This time I took my German partner with me who had never been. He loved it and the Shambles provided us with ample historical photo opportunities. The tiny streets always get overcrowded on Saturdays so if you're a wheelchair user or bring a childrens' pushchair be prepared to negotiate your way through. The chocolate and gift shops are highly recommended but quite expensive. Enjoy!
J. W.
A must do for Harry Potter fans. It is diagon alley full of Harry Potter themed stores selling wands, brooms, potions, etc.
M. N.
This is a must for Harry Potter fans who visit York. The Shambles is just like diagon alley from the movies there are 3 wizarding stores and various other little shops. You can see how the movie producers pulled ideas from the street for J K Rowling's inspired movie world.
My 7 year old loved the area it and it made his weekend searching through the stores and trying wands like he was in Ollivanders.
It can be quite busy and bustling especially during the school holidays but will with a visit whilst in York.
C. “. R.
Lovely market area. Nice in the day - better at night. This specific to the Christmas markets but the reason I will not give 5 stars is because I felt some of the stands weren't really that good in terms of target audience. There were some really good stalls like local produce etc but then right next to that would be placemats or something. Maybe it was just me but more food/less junk/more local produce/less mulled wine stands then it would be a quality days shopping.
D. B.
Quaint walk through the old town with coffee bars and places to eat just a stones throw. Try the local fudge too, delicious!
S. B.
Beautiful street, and nice shops. It's unique layout is worth a visit to see. Walking down it you could think you were in a harry potter set....
K. b. w.
York is a very historic city with so much to see and do. Loads of quirky shops with home made food outlets and street performers. Only downside is most of the car parks are a rip so your better off going on the park and ride.
B. B.
Lovely rambles down the Shambles. So much history and lots of quirky little shops and alleyways. Was the inspiration for Diagon alley apparently. There are quite a few Harry Potter style shops now, but it definately fits with the vibe. Well worth a ramble.
P. S.
Fascinating step back in time but very busy, particularly when a tour group passes through.
A. M.
Beautiful place to walk around in the meantime between attractions
K. B.
Nice little street of old buildings. Now plenty of Harry potter related shops as this what diagon alley appearance was supposed to be based on. Really lovely to see and some cats appear from the cat trail.
H. M.
Beautiful street with real old buildings and lovely individual shops even on a wet day it's a lovely place to visit. Loved the haunted pub beer was good too.
S. C.
Awesome place in York must visit some very quirky shops and some are really old I think as far back as the fourteen century. It's a great place to experience if you have not been. 👍
S. G.
Take one decently preserved medieval street, fifty souvenir and fudge shops, and a steady flow of tourists crossing it off their lists, and you end up with a shambles. In a matter of only a few years, real history is hard to separate from theme park fakery
P. H.
Make your own potions, grway fun for kids and adults, and some to buy
F. M.
Beautiful place! The remains of an old market street where the balconies are very close to each other. Now it is full of shops, cafés and energy.
R. C.
Very enjoyable and busy street in York. Plenty of unique and different shops.
H. Q.
Fantastic place with such lovely market! Besides, if you’re a HP fan, just go without hesitation
S. A.
Obviously it's the place to visit for any tourist. Unfortunately it's become overrun with Harry Potter merchandise. The street is a victim of it's own success and is incredibly busy, as are the shops. In my opinion there are better shops in York than there are on the Shambles. Go visit, but be prepared for crowds and queues.
O. H.
Beautiful, in every way. These tiny streets always bring me so much joy. A pleasure.
S. M.
Lovely little street so quaint with plenty of independent shops. Lots of Harry Potter themed stores if you're a fan. Definitely a must if you visit York
M. H.
Lots of atmosphere great niche shops and eating places lots to see and do
T. C.
I love this place. It's full of history and so interesting to look at the old buildings
v. c.
Lovely atmosphere, amazing variety of shops and places to eat/grab a drink. Recurring theme: Harry Potter and Christmas decorations shops. Outdoor food market is a must.
C. D.
Lovely place. If you have never been to York before, it's well worth a visit.
A. O.
Lovely quaint streets. Very nice to stroll around the shops and cafés.
K. B.
A beautiful street, so many amazing shops too.
K. H.
A dip back into the past when you stroll down the shambles in York. UK.
S. S.
It is very busy but it is full of character and has some great little shops
Í. M.
Well worth a visit but go late evening to avoid tourists crowds 😂
M. G.
Absolutely loved visiting The Shambles, it's truly felt like you were transported back in time. Full of quaint little tea rooms and shops.
R. M.
Quirky and lots of fun, Harry Potter fans would love this. Can be crowded but that makes it special and medieval streets add lot of character
E. B.
This is an amazing historic street that takes you back in time with mainly independent shops with crooked walls and bowing bay windows. A popular attraction in York.
T. A.
Amazing Street. Highly recommended to visit in early hours to beat the crowd
j. m.
York, the City that gave NEW AMSTERDAM its new, current name, NEW YORK, with its quaint little streets.
r.
Beautiful Street, u can feel the atmosphere of this place. A lot of tiny shops with various souvenirs.
T. C.
Harry Potter has taken over the Shumble, but it still remains a great example of what once was
B. F.
Olde worlde Blackadder type street. Loved the shops, although it's starting to seem a bit like diagon alley ....
L. L.
Probably the loveliest little street you will ever walk down in your life. It is such a pretty place whatever the weather and so full of character. You cant pass through The Shambles without going in the many gift shops there. I guarantee you will buy something, even if its a keepsake magnet for your fridge!
R.
I suggest going in off peak months. I went the week before the Easter Holidays and so it was a decent temperature without being too crowded. Beautiful little place and it really shows the old historic elemets that we still have in Britian today. Worth a trip
V. M.
As a huge harry potter fan there was no way i wasnt visiting the shambles whilst in york and i certainly wasnt disappointed! Very diagon alley esque with multiple harry potter shops, it was extremely busy though and hard to move anywhere or see anything
i. m.
Lovely historical place...love it
D. O.
Unfortunately it rained quite a lot today but the weather didn't spoil the atmosphere, it is a magical place.
王.
The must-worthy-visited street in York. It looks like the prototype of the Diagon Alley in “Harry Potter”.
M. S.
Amazing medieval preserved street. Great shops and pubs also
I. B.
The Shambles is one place everyone who goes to York should visit. It is so characterful, Olde Worlde charm oozing from every shop.
D. R.
Our favourite part of York. Eclectic and totally bonkers, with exceptionally cool shops.
M. M.
This area of york is an absolute wonder / delight! Loads of little shops and food / drinks places, pinvin/valhalla/shambles bar being our personal faves!! So much history here!
J. S.
I would say this looks more like Diagon Alley from Harry Potter than the original inspired street in Edinburgh! Also this street is how we got the word 'shambles' in English!
C. F.
York is unforgettable!! Best shopping ever!! Great places to eat!!
L. H.
Its historic, it's got interesting architecture, it's nice when not too busy, some shops are pretty good and some are very touristy.
D. F.
Nice street. Lots of shops
J. R.
This is a must visit, especially if you’re a fan of Harry Potter
L. B.
I went here at 5 in the morning so it would look like I own the place. 😆
H. B.
Never expected this up north isn't it terrible how I've only ever been to the South of the UK and never ventured up north it's fabulous here!!!
L. B.
As my first time visiting the shambles i was expecting more. Maybe its because im not a Harry Potter fan? Im not sure but i was pretty dissapointed with the shops, extremely small, claustrophobic and very over priced.
S. E.
Especially If you are a fan of harry potter, you better go there.
J. O.
Shambles is a Great historical places to visit. From the old hooks outside the old butchers shops Of the shambles to the Harry Potter Shop. Stunning architecture surrounded by visitors from all over the world
D. G.
Ye olde street with 3 Harry Potter shops and lovely old buildings. Great food stalls just off to the side through another alley.
R. M.
An interesting walk with great medieval architecture. Shops are a little kitschy but there is probably a little something for everyone. Surfaces are uneven so watch your footing, especially if it is wet.
C. M.
Nice little medieval street with old houses. A little too many Harry Trotter shops on that street though.
B. M.
A great old fashioned high street with loads of little interesting Shops, Inns and Tea Rooms. If you're in York, it's a must.
C. D.
There is a lot going on in this area. Historical, ghostly, and even film industry have a claim on the Shambles. We visited this area several times during our 2 day stay.
J. R.
York has happy memories for me. Lots to see and do.
K. W.
Beautiful York....absolutely stunningly amazing go and find out for yourself x
M. T.
Sadly appropriated by Harry potter... but apart from this a lovely example of how intimate buildings in the city once were!
A. R.
Lovely quirky street with a nice variety of shops, outdoor market and little cafe's
i.
Lovely old fashioned back streets in York reminds you of Harry Potter
C. D.
History history history!! Absolutely love a stroll down this street. Amazing.
A. d. M. C.
Nice place to walk. But it’s easy to get lost. Haha :)
S. S.
Beautiful part of York with lots of independent shops a must see part of York for any Harry Potter fan as is supposed to be the inspiration for diagon ally
N. L. M.
Absolutely lovely place with quaint buildings and a good little marketplace.
M. B.
Lovely little lane in the heart of a beautiful city, well worth a visit if you're in the area. Parts of the Harry Potter films were inspired by this street and others in York, and there's loads of shops selling HP merchandise.
L. A.
This street makes you feel like standing in the middle of Diagon Alley from Harry Potter. :)
S. B.
Brilliant day out with daughter, loved the shambles definitely come again
E. B.
Very unusual houses! Great for Harry Potter fans
R. F.
Beautiful attraction, you can still see some of the meat hooks from when all the butcher's shops were down here!
Plus points:
• Beautiful old buildings, especially if you look up
• Some good shops
• Great place to take a photograph!
• Historical shrine is very interesting
• The original Harry Potter shop is very good
Bad points:
• Always totally rammed unless it's very early morning
• Some of the shops are just souvenir 'tat' and aren't great
• For some reason there are now 3 Harry Potter shops, one was good but three is a few (two) too many.
• Difficult disability access - due to the cobbles it would be hard to walk on with a stick/walker or use a wheelchair. Similarly the pavements are very narrow.
K. W.
Such a lovely place to visit!
E. R.
Gorgeous little street. Lots of little unique shops and plenty of interesting finds! Christmas shop is a fave.
M. B.
Definitely know why this may have been inspiration for diagon alley in Harry Potter. I felt like I was transported on a time machine back to Victorian England.
L.
Brilliant place with lots of history. Check out the night attractions, brilliant
P. G.
The que for the shop that does Harry Potter stuff is long and the street can't really accommodate, the rest is nice though
S. R.
Like visiting Diagon Alley. Old, quaint and magical !
l. u.
Like walking back in time! Some lovely shops to explore and details of the cat trail to follow from the York glass shop.
B. D.
Really old and quaint, full of interesting shops. A must see if you visit York.
M. C.
Busy but it was Halloween and half term
S. D.
The most wonderful little shopping street. Allegedly the oldest one in Europe. Lovely browsing and easy to spend hours there.
L. R. B.
Lovely little street with quaint shops and restaurants. Apparently Harry Potter's Diagon Alley was modelled after this street!
D. T.
Yes its resembles Diagon Alley but it's never been confirmed as the inspiration for it, but you can see why people assume so.
No HP movie footage was shot down here.
But, this is a cool street with boutique shops and definitely worth a visit to get a feel of what old English streets were like.
The old wonky building are great and have so much character.
It certainly is the closest you'll get to a real life Diagon Alley.
I. C.
Character....worth to go, enjoy shopping, fruit market...
C. B.
Well you just have to see it when you’re in York; lovely historical shops and buildings. Makes you feel... magical!
L. R.
Beautiful street with lots of options on bars, coffee places, restaurants and gifts. Close to it you can find a nice street market.
A. S.
It's a very scenic little street, but the shops are an odd mix with some tacky touristy places mixed with other genuinely good ones. It's also normally very busy, so try to avoid the crowds of you want to enjoy it more!
T. W.
This place is fab like a step back in time . The shambles streets are brilliant very small street so always gets extremely busy lots of great quaint shops. Love this town usually try to get up at least a couple of times each year never get bored, would recommend one of the guided ghost tours.
A.
Especially at the night, an amazing place to visit
M. N.
York was lovely you have to pay for a lot of things but would go back again
C. G.
Omg this place is full of quirky quaint shops mystical n magic beautiful plsce
s. l.
The place is picking up a pace, food places are really packing the streets now. Potter seems quite a popular theme for quite a few shops, wands at the ready!
M. L.
Such a great place to visit. You can feel the history in York, especially when walking the Shambles. Highly recommend visiting.
C. R.
Fun, ancient street in York, filled with tourist shops.
B. L.
I love visiting this place. Great atmosphere.
G. D.
Superb old street in the walls of York. Excellent shops and a superb history to the place.
C. L.
One of the best-preserved medieval streets in the world, currently home to 3 Harry Potter shops!
T. H.
A fascinatingly historical market street with old style traditional shops along it. Also has a few great Harry Potter themed here too, although the vary in price, "the shop that must not be named" appearing to be the cheapest on certain items.
C. C.
Such a lovely old way with lots of shops and food places well worth a walk down the devision of present and the past
B. r.
Better when there is no tourist activity! Betty's is great and Little Betty's for food. Lots of interesting buildings and The Railway Museum worth a visit although some parents let their kids use the place as a playground jumping on the exhibits! The food is very expensive here too.
I. B.
A nice street to take a stroll. Very busy, but charming at the same time.
If you are looking for Harry Potter related stuff, here you will find plenty. Shout out to The Shop That Must Not Be Named. Great visit.
r. c.
Love this quaint strert in york. Great little shops. Takes you back to the past.
J. W.
Nice tourist street, some interesting little shops.
b. c.
Not much not to love about the Shambles. The buildings lurch and lean over onto the street below. The old world charm, the variety of shops and places to eat.Wonderful place.
J. S.
Cool street. Especially for Harry Potter fans.
D. E.
Very quirky little place, walked around on a quiet evening and again on a very busy Saturday morning. Full of lots of interesting little shops, really feels like going back in time and the buildings are amazing to look at with their ever expanding floor space as they get higher, they also join the opposite buildings at points
C. F.
Visited early morning as gets very busy, worth a visit as atmospheric and interesting
M. G.
Crowded in Summer but still cool
V. M.
Love walking through every time I'm in York. Nice how the have retained the street how it would have looked when it was first built. When the first Harry Potter shop opened it was nice as it fits with the books, but it seems to be a bit overkill with all the Harry Potter shops and items now.
M. B.
Very busy during the day, but quite magical if you wait until after dark when the crowds go and the shops are lit up.
L. B.
Love the atmosphere here, especially at Christmas time!!
G.
What a great place York is and the shambles just makes it better go and visit look at the old buildings and shops. I only have one negative thing to say about the shambles is that it is getting a bit overwhelmed with Harry Potter shops 1 or maybe 2 shops is enough but to be honest the shops are hundreds of years old so I don't think this is a real problem so go visit take it in and have a great time.
K. W.
Beautiful historical street a must see when visiting York x
D. B.
Lovely place to visit in York, a must pedestrian only a lovely cobbled street full of quaint shops
C.
Beautiful old Street with buildings very close together, some great independent shops selling all kinds of gifts and things you wouldn't normally get on a modern high Street.
W. L.
Often crowded and lots of Harry Potter shops. Historical buildings are great with a few hidden gems amongst the tourist entrapment.
I. H.
I love the shambles, I lived in York over half my life and miss it dearly. You never get bored of going around the city centre, its just a shame that the shambles used to be a variety of unique and quirky stores with vintage and handmade goods which half are now harry Potter maybe one of those could have been a themed cafe.
D. H.
One of the uks most beautiful and interesting streets. With many interesting shops and an old world feel. I highly recommend the bakery at the top of the street.
C. T.
It’s like stepping back in time. And with it being crowded, on a hot day, the smells are authentic too 😜. Only negative was the amount of “Harry Potter” shops. Felt like every other shop was a wizard shop. I guess it’s what the tourists want but a little more diversity would be good.
N. H.
Nice historical part of York, with old buildings very close together. These have always been shops, but the shop fronts now are not the original. It's nice to have independent retailers here, as it add character to the location. It can get very busy during peak periods.
T. A. M. R.
Amazing visully and home to some great indie shops...York is such a magical place and this cannot be missed on your visit!
E. T.
It was a nice backstreet alley experience and all the Harry Potter stuff was interesting. The shops that lined the shambles were quaint and mysterious, and you can get good street food there. Do bring cash though.
Á. G.
York is a one day turist attraction due to it's size but it is a beautiful place to visit.
M. P.
This area is so cool! Genuine medieval streets and buildings have so much character. If you're into Harry Potter, you wil especially love it. There are several shops dedicated almost exclusively to Harry Potter fans. The shops in this area have things for everyone, though, from souvenirs to clothing and jewelry to fine art. And even if you're not into shopping, it's just so picturesque - stroll around and enjoy!
K. W.
Lovely historical shopping street. Lives up to the 'hype' and offers plenty of shopping choices including 3 Harry Potter themed shops, me and my 7 year old daughter were in heaven!
P. W.
Very old and interesting place featured in Harry potter films
S. T.
Tourist trap.
I suppose if you go to York you have to visit.
Lots of Harry Potter memorabilia.
Z. E.
My fave shopping street. The Harry Potter theme has truly taken off.
H.
A really nice street with a range of shops.
G. S.
Adorable! Such a unique feel. Very busy for obvious reasons. A lot of Harry Potter shops which were all stylised which was nice. There is an Italian on the street which is quite good too.
J. B.
Love the Shambles very beautiful place
A. B.
Lovely walk, loads of history, good choice of shops, well worth a visit
B. G.
Nice, but apart from one small street not as exciting as anticipated. Perhaps a guided tour would have been a good thing, assuming such a tour would lead to more hidden treasures, narrow alleyways and some-such.
A. V.
One of the most authentic cities I've ever been to, and this certainly is the most authentic part of York.
J. R.
Quirky and wonderful! A must visit place!
M. M.
History wise, this place is beautiful. It also has a nice little selection of shops too. However, it gets extremely busy so its best to visit early in the morning if you want to snap some nice photos of the street.
C. R.
Lovely, Quirky cobbled Street lined with shops. We'll worth a visit.
G. A.
Absolutely amazing. Loved it it's a nice price of history where you can walk around as 6ou please. All the shops are quite nice specially the tea ones as you can sample different types of tea. As most walk if you're in York. Also great for Harry Potter fans
K. S.
The shambles buildings are all beautiful and have really interesting products. Although the shops in this area are expensive. It is a tourist attraction that is well worth a visit but be prepared for big crowds particularly ont he weekend.
D. G.
Atmospheric, pretty street in the centre of York with an interesting history. School holidays and weekends it gets absolutely packed with people, which does detract from the experience. Very cool at night with the lanterns illuminating the old street and few people around.
S. R.
Wonderful array of tiny boutiques, designer shops and lots of lovely tea rooms mixed with tourist souvenir shops with part of a small street dedicated to the wizarding world of Harry Potter. So much packed into such a small area!
D.
Crowded but certainly historic little streets full of medieval architecture in the shadow of the Minster. Not quite as appealing as it once was due to endless shops selling crud you don't want - but then if you are having a family day out your kids will want that crud. Still a remarkable place to look around.
P. S.
Great base for visits to York. Nice log cabins in secluded spot within minutes of York centre. Only lost a star to warn fishermen not to expect a runs water. The locals from the syndicate will tell you that if you catch it'll be a nice fish, but its a wait....
R. S.
Great place to stroll through. Lovely shops and very cool architecture. There is often live entertainers in the square at the end Make sure you get a hot chocolate from the chocolate shop. They are delicious, make old style with real chocolate and you get a free chocolate as a taster as well.
A. G.
Incredible architecture remaining for hundreds of years. So impressed it's still standing. However the shops to be found were very standard in some spots and hugely tacky and unoriginal in others, worth seeing if you're in the area, but don't go out of your way.
M. V.
The Shambles are just brilliant place. It doesn't matter if you're there during a day when shops are open or during the night. It has it's own magic too. It's absolutely lovely place to visit and even I'm not Harry Potter fan it reminds me the series. Maybe because few those shops are located here?
H. G.
Lots of lovely shops to look round ,is a very busy street but well worth a walk round as lovely and old buildings
M. P.
Lovely medieval street with unusual shops
A. M.
I'm sure I've reviewed this before but am more than happy to do it again. An enchanting Street in the centre of York and a must see! Overhanging houses, small friendly shops and tons of atmosphere. A tourist hot spot and gets very busy in the summer, especially holidays. Even though, this is a street with charm and not to mention history. A definite go to on any visit to York.
B. L. (.
Went there several times. A lot of shops by the narrow alley.
C. B.
Some fantastic little shops, offering many different things to buy as keepsakes or presents. Watch your footing on the cobbled streets and it gets very busy on Saturdays. Definitely worth a visit if you're in York.
A.
A lovely place, lots of quirky shops, loads of Harry Potter and Christmas shops.....and I visited in May!! Some nice tea rooms and pubs, there's a local market that has some nice crafts on display too.
R. A.
What a living piece of history
The shops are amazing , and if you are a Harry Potter fan, then you will be spoilt for choice
I particularly liked the Bavarian Christmas shop. It took me back to my childhood, with all the wonderful carved tree ornaments.
Great day out
L. C. S.
Go here and see it! If you come to York, you must see the Shambles. It's a diverse and cool place to visit. Maybe you won't buy anything or find what you need, but you will have an interesting experience exploring the York city centre. There are many other nice attractions around.
G. S.
Must-see street for tourists, lined with old houses leaning towards each other so that they almost meet above your head. It's beautiful, but the shops are predictably touristy, mostly selling gifts, sweets and chocs etc. Definitely worth a look for a visitor.
J. G.
Surprising variety of shops to visit. Plenty of eateries too and a food court with lots of options. Incredibly busy though, so quite packed at times.
J. L.
Amazing place, full of history and old world charm. Got there about 10.30am on a Saturday morning and was empty. Not all the shops open by then but great time to get some quality photos even before the crowds arrive
Y. C.
Cute place but very crowded during weekends. They have good food market nearby.
S. M.
Love wandering around here normally. Always had an interesting array of shops to browse through. However, this time it seems to have been taken over by a group of Harry Potter styled establishments. Feels like it's sightly lost its identity. But maybe that's just about supply and demand.
C. B.
Nothing beats the shambles for quirky variety and atmosphere, especially later on in the year when it's lit up for Christmas. And if you're not there to shop, there's an assortment of eateries, or you can just enjoy strolling around the meandering little streets enjoying the bizarre architecture of the place
E. M.
Fantastic example of medieval buildings. Some gimmicky shops. Watch the curb, walked off it a few times as I was too busy looking up and around!
S. F.
Beautiful medieval street. Worth to see early in the morning, before it's crowded.
R. M.
Iconic York Street. There's many cute little shops including sweets, sandwiches, souvenirs, gifts and clothing. We went to check out the new Harry Potter shop but there was a big queue and we had left it too late. You can access the market easily too.
L. F.
Full of quirky little shops and is full of history, definitely worth a visit for anyone visiting York
K. H.
Always enjoy a visit to York. Lots to see including the historic Shambles. Step back in time and experience life as it was, just like Harry Potter. A really good selection of shops and eating places.
J. O.
You can't help but love the Shambles, with it being so historic. But it's also kept alive by the shops that dwell within it's buildings. Yet another Harry Potter thened shop has popped up, (there are now 5 I believe) which is great if you like it but maybe not so good if you're not a fan. Our favourite sweet shop is on The Shambles and we never get bored of looking at the beautiful cobbled street or quirky buildings.
P. H.
Great place to visit. The starting point for the best ghost tour, see tall man by church opp Golden Fleece pub. Can get extremely busy in day time. In evening visit the quirky Shambles tavern, excellent beers and great atmosphere.
Y.
Enjoyed my visit however it was Christmas market time so was busy and crowed personally I would not take very young children as its very packed and can imagine it would be stressful but some took animals which again wasn't the best idea but each to there own
J. T.
Stopped at the lucky day's cafe,a bit pricey for sandwiches.I had a scone and coffee which was nice . Very friendly staff, very accommodating as there were seven of us.Some buskers were playing which was nice to listen to . There were plenty of people visiting shops and local attractions as it was a nice sunny day
R. F.
An exciting historical city with something for everyone, mum's will enjoy the vast array of shops there are plenty of lovely places to eat and drink, Betty's tea room is a must and worth the short queue, lots for the kids to explore at the Viking museum and lots of musicians and street artists to amuse everyone.
M. S.
York is full of history but hardly more so than here. Ancient timber framed buildings sit at jaunty angles and house an array of shops although we noted a higher than average number of broomstick and cauldron type shops cashing in on the Harry Potter interest. Worth a visit.
B. D.
We stayed in York recently and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The Shambles is a lovely area full of very interesting old buildings. Most converted into shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. No shortage of things to look at and places to eat and drink. Good quality shops as well as jolly 'tat'. Many beautiful churches and museums too.
E. M.
Lovely old street and quite rightly preserved but the shops don't seem to sell anything that's not Harry potter related. Having said that I liked the Viking shop which was not over priced and worth a look.
T. O. T.
Great area of your that is the best way to see the real side if York. It's original buildings are amazing . Shopping area ..eateries.. a must when you visit York . The area is so historic there is something round every corner that's so interesting . X
P. D.
Must be visiting.
I. R.
Fantastic street of 'jettied' timber frame houses. My advice is to wander this in evening after the crowds have gone. More atmospheric after dark, and you can stand and study the details on the building.
M. D.
Lovely old fashioned area, with loads of cute shops
翻.
I'm confused as to what the place is. It's an alley way with merch filled shops that are mostly Harry Potter based, I guess. The street and shops are all narrow which I guess is kind of an atmosphere adder but for me just added a lot of frustration when simply wanting to take a quick look inside the shops. And when it's crowded trying to get around is a nightmare. Shope selections are nice and Shop staff are friendly enough but there are hazards such as boxes lying about. During my trip a box cutter was left out in the open in one of the shops while kids were running about the place.
M. S.
Lovely medioeval street in the city centre.. Absolutely worth a visit (especially for Harry Potter's fans!)
M. C.
A must-go place in York. Right in the city centre, the shambles inspired diagonal alley from Harry potter. Therefore, there are some themed stores there. But even if you are not a fan, it is a beautiful street just to pass by and see the different kind of shops. During the night the place has an interesting aspect too, although the stores are closed.
T. S. C.
Fascinating area of York and well worth a visit. Some great tea shops and don't be put off by the small appearance- some of them are sprawling and some have pretty and extensive outdoor seating out back. The tourist shops are a little pricey hut fascinating. Strongly recommended if you are in York
R. U.
We visited York for a family day out and we ambled around the Christmas Market heading towards York Minster. There was plenty to see, a variety of stalls selling a great range of goods. The whole area was clean and tidy with plenty of cafes etc and good signposts for toilets
R. A.
Superb day out. Shop owners and their staff were friendly, helpful and not at all pushy. Really enjoyed the day out. Will be going much more often as it's so easy on the train. Walked about 6 miles throughout the day and didn't feel like I'd done that much because it was such a great day out.
T. S.
Very pretty medieval streets with lots of small but expensive shops. Very busy with tourists.
J. D.
I was extremely excited when I heard about this street and I already knew that during my trip to York I must go there. I had big expectations and, to be honest, the street looked as beautiful as I've imagined. Everyone who is in York should visit the Shambles, I highly recommend it :)
R. C.
History, quirky and worth a visit. There are sevaral different shops on this street. You can get free samples of tea, see how fudge is made, visit a Harry Potter shop, visit the Chapel of go for lunch at the Italian restaurant.
A. P.
A stunning place to visit.
The old buildings seem to huddle together as they hang over the cobbled street below. Just walking through the shambles you get a sense of the immense history of the place.
There are small independent shops and restaurants at the shambles each different than the one before it.
This place gets very busy during the day as you would expect. In the evening when everything has closed and the lights are on the shambles is beautiful and look like it's been taken from a Harry Potter film.
A. N.
A crowded alley with unique and wide variations of stores!
P. T.
Fabulous street in York. Always been fascinating to visit but after providing inspiration for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter stories and films it brings a different interest to whole new generation.
r. a. a.
Just brilliant , what can you say , York is one of my favourite places to visit . Especially the pubs along the river . Lots to see and do , take plenty of money if the kids want to see everything. Beautiful historic place
L. H.
Lovely, very busy, Harry potter shop was amazing
F. S.
The building are lovely. Shops selling lots of interesting things. From Christmas decorations to Vikings theme items, really a good place for souvenirs.
Very photogenic walk, perfect for Instagram too.
A. S.
Lots of shops down thr small streets just like Harry Potter. The market it good off to the side with lots of stalls and places to eat.
J. D.
Lovely little shops. Very unique
w.
I can remember the Shambles when it really was a butchers mart. You won't find any butchers shop now but there was a Harry Potter theme to the place. The shops cater for tourists in this rather quaint old Street and it is an experience to have in York.
A. v. B.
Wonderful part of town, though there are other buildings and sections that have a similar feel. Still, the Shambles has buildings that lean inwards a bit more than the rest, winding streets and little alley ways. A great place to explore. There are lots of sweet and chocolate shops, but Roly's Fudge Pantry makes really good fudge. You can watch it being made.
C. W.
Definitely a 'visitor attraction' the narrow mediaeval street is full of interesting shops. But look at the architecture here and along most of York's streets for a real sense of history.
p. v.
A nice place to walk around. There are couple of vegan and vegetarian options and lots of places to shop. You can spend a couple of hours working through the narrow and historic York streets. Only 5 min from York Minister.
F. K.
Great buildings, but disappointed at what a lot of the shops were selling. Also was it four or five shops selling all Harry Potter products. I'm a Potter fan but why so many of them. As for some selling tack for tourests that just insults the city of York.
L. W.
Can get lost walking round here. But it's a good day out, looking in all the little shops. There are lots of places to grab something to eat. The Yorkshire pudding wrap is worth a visit. Very tasty!
T. A.
It's a great little street with a variety of shops, such as the fudge pantry and 3 different Potter-themed shops of wizardry. All are guaranteed to excite and delight you as you walk down the beautifully preserved Tudor street. The Shambles Market has a great array of jewellery and handmade crafts, as well as some great street eats and restaurants. A great little spot in the heart of York where the tourists flock. Everyone is guaranteed to find something they enjoy here.
l. s.
Great little shops with a wide range of variety of products. Great for tourists and locals just wanting to mooch around. For tourists would advise to have a camera to hand as plenty of little surprises on the buildings and they stand.
L. B.
Could wander round here all day simply magic
T. M.
Medieval street in the heart of York, Europe's most visited street; originally a street of butchers shops, now various small shops have their outlets here. Including my personal favourite, a home made fudge shop.
V. J.
The shambles is brilliant, every time we visit York we have a little stroll down here. This time it just seemed better. It attracts a lot of people taking photos and standing in the middle of the street, there are several shops dedicated to Harry potter and magic. Definitely worth a stroll.
D. O. (.
One of those places in York everyone tells you to see. It's a very interesting area. All the old buildings and streets. Only thing I would say is that it gets very busy. A lot of people stopping in the middle of the street to take photos etc
K. S.
Always a great visit.. but too much Harry Potter for me personally but can see why they are taking advantage of theme as the area does suit the story.
D.
Once again as posted previously its a very vibrant place full of great people and products, the choice is huge as you can find just about anything there ranging from delicious food to live music orchestra performances and even a Harry Potter store with a medieval shop full of ancient swords and katanas. Fun place for the whole family
E. F.
Love love love the Shambles. Definitely touristy but a must if coming to York for the first time. You really get a chance to go back in time and imagine how things used to look. If you’re a fan of Harry Potter, you’ll appreciate the buildings looking a little like Diagon Alley and there a few HP shops you’ll want to duck into! Definitely a York Must-See.
S. M.
Really breathtaking little street. Loads of history packed into it. Many shops with different things in such as chocolate shops, pubs, wizard shop... you can see the butchers hooks outside a few of the shops from where the original butchers back in the 14/15 hundreds were. It's a fascinating street with so much charachter. It looks beautiful in both the day and night. It is usually quite busy, but with the amount of shops and history and beauty, that is expected.
l. w.
Fabulous sites to see with historical thrown in.
B.
It was packed! I know, I know 🙄 but seriously.....it was packed! Just what you expect, historic, cobbled, excellent shops (priced accordingly) spectacular cathedral, fabulous food market with a variety of stalls covering sweet, savoury & spicy...Oh and a Harry Potter shop.......well played York council, well played!
E. S.
Gorgeous place busy but so pretty
C. R.
Definitely worth a visit. Lots of lovely shops (if you are a tea drinker, don't miss the tea merchant for your loose leaf fix), great for gifts. Classic cobbled street and can get crowded so not greatly accessible though.
J. D.
Beautiful place to walk round. Plenty of history and quirky architecture up and down this street. Amazing food places all over the place, the smells are delicious as you walk round. Very, very overcrowded at times and very narrow so you may struggle to stop and take it all in at busy times.
S. M.
What a great place to go and shop. Every little turn and street has lots of shops to please everybody. Such a vibrant atmosphere as you walk round, the smells of the bakeries and coffee shops is amazing.
M. S.
Nice place to hang around day time as well as evening but not late evening as all the stalls disappear by 8ish. Plenty of food options from all over the world.
In addition to food there are plenty of souvenir shops
It is right in the middle of the town, in case you need to do your usual shopping.
Most food stalls prefer contact less payments
J. K.
Been through only once during a Saturday, street is narrow and over crowded.
The buildings along the street date back to centuries; contrary to the name of this place, there are no meat shops but some hooks left.
There are several candy shops, gift shops, Harry Potter themed shops etc.
Too many people taking selfies and pictures, so they should be crazy about this place.
T. E.
Nice old street with Harry Potter inspired shops
C. J. J.
The Shambles stood out during my visit to York. The "oldness" of this shopping road made it a memorable stop during my travels that summer. It is certainly a great spot to wander down. It is also a great place for some interesting photos to be taken. Do take care if walking during any kind of precipitation.
M. T.
Great place to visit. Very quaint with lots of little shops and eateries...
C. W.
Fabulous characteristic place, Absolutely Beautiful
J. Z.
If you want to see glimpses of old Britain York is the place where a castle a market will give you a fair amount of idea how it was like many many years ago. Those who have been to UK for first time. This is a kind of place that reminds one of Charles Dickenson and Jane Austin
M. J.
Well worth a visit if you are ever in York. Do take the park and ride as the traffic in york can get hectic.
Plenty of food options to choose from and even more in variety if you need some retail therapy.
There is something for everyone around the shambles.
P. L.
A must see location while visiting great olde world shops and on Saturday the market is small but good variety of stalls, good thing is due to it's size and the surrounding area no vehicles walking in the streets without being bowled over beautiful.
W. K.
Loved it. Well worth a visit.

Great historical street. Cobbled street's. Shops leaning towards each other. Small and interesting shops , offering some unusual goods. Like going back in time. Wonderful area of York.
C. K.
Omg brilliantly lovely and stunning place full of quirky shops and boutiques. However crammed full of bodies so always being pushed and shoved so not brilliant if you are claustrophobic. For shoppers.... it is a dream.

Absolutely love York,it's so historical..we love a having a day there, love shambles market, with the cobbled streets..we usually call at the royal oak pub for lunch 2 for £12.. .then call at the Cornish bakery for fresh made scones with jam & clotted cream..it's so unique with all the wonderful things too do & see..it's a must if you,'ve never been..

A must visit if in York. These houses are a proper blast from the past.
If you hate crowds, get there early!
Even better, all the pagan shops are shutting down. Result!
B. W.
A wonderful medieval street that has buildings from many periods of history. There are wizard shops here selling Harry Potter items. The area is usually quite busy, especially on bank holidays.
D. L.
A lovely area of York with many independant shops and plenty of places to eat and drink. Its very popular so be prepared to share it with thousands of other tourists! Don't try to park in York use the park & ride, its cheaper and less stressful.
M. C.
After looking at around ten other pubs, thank goodness we found The Three Tuns. The smell in this beautiful pub was fantastic, it was OLD! It was just awesome, you could almost feel the presence of past revellers in there. It looks beautiful and the staff were just lovely, very welcoming. We decided it would be our 'regular' in York!
D. M.
York shambles are great so evocative of medieval England. Like travelling back in time a few hundred years. Go have a walk down if you are in York well worth it there are some great little shops too.
W. W.
It is straight out of a movie. Harry Potter themed shops have obviously taken root. None the less it is super quaint and worth the visit. It is in the inner city so there is plenty to do after you stroll through.
V. C.
Nice range of shops, 3 Harry Potter shops n several sweet shops and some gift shops- obviously they are quite expensive but lots of old buildings and a great, slightly creepy atmosphere to enjoy, opposite one end is The Golden Fleece, which is said to be haunted and does nice food, also worth a visit
D. P.
The shambles are great. There are loads of little independent shops and a restaurants. You can buy handmade chocolates and bread, Harry Potters magic wand, jewellery, a woollen sweater or a delicious pork pie.
A. G.
Gorgeous old street with a lot of great shops on it. Would highly recommend checking out the Earl Gray Tea Rooms and The Shop Who Must Not Be Named. Also home to several great sweet shops.
D. C.
Nice street that inspired diagon alley
D. L.
Go at night or early in the morning or it will be full of tourists.. like me 😅
S. G.
York Shambles lives up to its name. It was slowly turning into Diagon Alley from Harry Potter. But sadly in these harsh times for retail the Harry Potter style shops are struggling and appear to be closing down. Other than that, a mist visit when in York to experience a truly old English cobbled back street. But beware, it is always heaving with visitors from all over the world, and can be a real crush. Awesome place though.
H. S.
Absolutly beautiful place with the most amazing shops
B. B.
Nice, some really lovely old buildings but too many shops selling fudge and key rings. Stonegate street has a better selection, more space and a better range of shops/places to look.
F. N.
Lovely to look st many interesting features but lots of the shops have been turned into gimmicky stores, they clearly have a market for their wears- just not my thing.
c.
Has a really cute atmosphere, definitely very different from everything back home in Spain. Especially at night, if you walk through them, you feel like you've been sent back in time.
H. C. M.
Fantastic historic place to walk around with lots of character & great architecture in these really old buildings & shops, the little cobbled streets are great for a wander round with some great shops to see, if you don't like busy places go first thing in the morning
A. M.
Lovely quaint little place, like something from a movie...Harry Potter... It's extremely busy in the day but if you can..go down at night, looks absolutely stunning.
P. B.
Full of quirky shops with lots of hustle and bustle. A must place to visit when in York
Y. M.
Incredible to see!! Love the way the buildings seem to be encroaching on you, as though they will fall right down onto you. It was a Saturday when we visited so there were a LOT of people. There was a wait to get into a Harry Potter shop, which is RIDIKULUS 😝 because it’s the same things you can get in EVERY OTHER HP shop. 🤔 there is a quaint food trolley area which was neat. Definitely get over there and see it. Walk through on your way to the Minster ❤️
R. K.
My childhood memories have changed. Now where there was a toy store. Stands Official and Unofficial Harry Potter stores. Different but merchandise as far and wide the eye can see inside....Magic🧙♂️🧙♀️🌛🌚🌜👍🏻
J. C.
Lovely old streets - full of charm :)
M. K.
The Shambles is only a small street in York, but it is an atmospheric and delightful step back in time. The shops are wedged tightly together and almost touch, garret to garret, above your head. There is a great little market behind the street, accessible from about half way down the Shambles. York is a great city and well worth a visit.
C. M.
Great town to see. A few streets full of little shops, old builduings full of character. It is amazing to walk there. You never want to stop.
It could get a little busy sometimes as there are a lot of tourists.
J. B.
The Shambles is a good place to explore. Unique shops including antique jewellery, fudge, tea room and Harry Potter fans will love the shops selling potter merchandise. Through the market there are stalls selling food.
A. R.
It is a must if you are visiting York to come for a walk to shambles. Lovely old style streets with houses that almost touchthe one in front and nice classic shops. It is something that can be seen in 10min but definitely worth the visit.
L.
Must visit when in York love all the quirky shops 😊
r. h.
A great atmosphere and lots to see, amazing buildings.
J. T.
Love the shambles.over the years some changes.the latest being the shop that must not be named.harry Potter fans and children lining up to get in.selling of course Harry Potter merchandise.
Some clues still available in the shambles to let visitors know what was sold in shops in years gone by.such as meat hooks hanging outside windows.
Joining a tour of the city well worth it.some are free.meet outside of art museum.tour guides very proud of their city.and volunteer to take groups around.
D. M.
Great market area with a wide selection of stalls and goods!
Can get quite busy on Saturdays but stalls are wide enough apart to move around without much hassle.
C. L.
Lovely setting to while away the hours and look around shops etc.
M. H.
The inspiration for J K Rowling's Diagonal Alley, Shambles is a beautifully preserved Medieval street with excellent examples of jetting buildings, cobbles and a few of the butchers hooks still hanging from some of the shops.
S. V.
Set in the historic city of York this lovely cobbled Street is a must see.
If history is your thing then this will take you back to an almost medieval time and feeling.
It was mentioned in the doomsday book of William the conqueror in 1066 and many of the buildings on the street date back to the fourteenth and fifteenth century 1350_1475.
R. L.
At the centre of York which is a beautiful place. Shambles is a narrow road normally traffic free , busy bustling full of shops lots of food opportunities in squares off it. The Harry potter shop is there "the shop which cannot be named , expect queues.
B. B.
Great mix of chain stores and independent shops, at in an attractive backdrop
C. H.
As someone who comes from York, watching what's happening to the Shambles is truly heartbreaking. It's becoming rather as its name suggests. Lovely, traditional, York institutions are leaving this wonderful street to be replaced by tat merchants and Harry Potter themed shops among other such similar offerings. Hopefully what remains of the more traditional shops stay for a long time yet and more of their ilk are attracted in the future.
E. L.
Beautiful Street. Is very narrow can get crowded this only adds to oldy worldy charm of the street. Lots of quirky shops selling gifts and souvenirs and plenty of places to grab a quick bite to eat or sit with a nice cuppa and a bit of cake.
A. F.
Probably the most famous Street in York although people think it was something different to what it was actually used for it was straight full of pictures and you can still see the hooks where they hung the meat and the blood used to drip down and run down the centre of the road there are a lot of quaint little shops that are well worth a visit although currently Harry Potter shops are more prolific than they should be at the top of the Shambles is the entrance to the market which is well worth a visit on market day
N. G.
We went during the Christmas market so it was pleasant to see so many independent shops offering authentic reasonably priced items to finish off a home. There is a uniqueness to York folk apparently unphased by big business
C. D.
A quirky but crowded street filled with Harry Potter shops! If you're a Potter fan then you'll want to visit. Otherwise by no means a 'must see'.
T. D.
A real case of do believe the hype.Incredibly picturesque, charming, almost as if its was built for a film set straight out of a Charles Dickens novel, I would imagine walking here in December/Christmas time would be the ultimate trip back in time.
Row upon row of delightful shops selling all manners of gifts, trinkets and curiousity's can be browsed along it's narrow cobbled streets....
J. K.
Very sweet, cobbled street, with some individual shops.
But about 5 Harry Potter shops??
Bit to many, when i asked why so many. They said they idea for Digone alley in Harry Potter, but wasnt filmed there.
Cant blame them for cashing in but a few to many Harry Potter shops.
J. F.
Very famous spot in York, but it's just a wee street in reality, so bring your own information if that's what you are here for. It's a honey pot for tourists and has the usual fudge and tourist shops on it. I just like the feel of it and spend most of my time looking at the blend of buildings and leftover architecture like the old meathooks and butcher table fronts.
I.
It is a beautiful little street with Harry Potter related shops and I totally see why!
The street looks just like it was from a Harry Potter set!
There are shops that most tourists vist like the shop that has no name (I think thats what it's called) I personally really liked the potion cauldron it is perfect for people that lover Harry Potter and even those who don't!
I would recommend checking out roly's Fudge Pantry too it sells really good Fudge and you can even watch them make it
The Fudge is quite expensive but totally worth it as even a little crumble of it tastes like you have just eaten a whole piece!
Over all I think you should totally check this place out as it is a really cool street.
L. Q.
Quaint, historical street. Definitely worth a visit.
J. K.
What a shambles. Bust and touristy but you've got to do it. Go early or late if you can.
J. C.
Interesting and picturesque tudor streets. Visited in February, so I could really stop and admire the buildings - I can only guess how busy it gets in tourist season. Didn't really go in the shops, though I thought having 3 Harry Potter shops at one end of the street was a bit much. I expect they will hold a triwizard tournament to see which shop is allowed to carry on trading.
J. A.
Historical street in York. Interesting to look at but usually very full of tourists. It has been suggested that it was one of the inspirirations for the movie version of Harry Potter's Diagon Alley and as such a handful of HP merchandise shops have recently sprung up.
V. O.
Stumbled upon this quaint little alley to realise it was part of the harry potter films!!! Some lovely little shops here but somewhat disappointing that some shops sell nothing but harry potter merch. Would be nice to keep originality in such a lovely historic part of town!
v. “. h.
My kids loved visiting here as they are massive Harry potter fans so it was "diagon alley "
S. R.
Not bad, if you're a Harry Potter nut... but i guess i hoped for more from the Street of Cunning Artificers. Definately the right place for Diagon Alley tho.
Picturesque
A. S.
Quirky historical street. You can see why it inspired Harry Potter Diagon Alley and now the numerous wizarding and other type shops on it. Fun area to look round
H. L.
Don't just look at the quirky and independent shops. Look at the buildings and imagine the facings taken off some - so many older buildings are hidden underneath. Go into the shops and see the vaulted undercroft. Be an architectural detective
T. W.
The shambles is one of the most magical places in Britain. With quirky shops and nooks and hidey holes it is full of things to see and food for the imagination. It's definitely worth a visit if you are in York.
C. G.
Beautiful quaint shopping lane. For its most part, the vendors and shop owners are pleasant and lovely to talk to. There's a shop or two, selling items aimed at fans and children, with big "Do Not Touch" signs EVERYWHERE whereas other shops selling similar items are happy for goods to be handled.
R. S.
Nice cobble stone walkways and crocked buildings
H. P.
Brilliant little area. Usually very crowded. A real look back in time. Just loved the tiny doors and crooked walls which address only a few feet apart at the roof. GUI for a wander at night and take your camera for a few really spooky shots. Highly recommended!
K. H.
Love this medieval alley and all its unique shops: chocolate, stationary, teas, Harry Potter, Christmas, tea room, tavern, Vikings, potion drinks, and more! It really feels like you're stepping into the real Diagon Alley.
P. B.
Lovely place to visit. Get there early in the morning to beat the crowds and get pictures.
c. g.
What a fabulous experience, I know it's only shops, but it's in York. Cobbled streets, buildings at the top you can reach out the window and hold hand with neighbour's opposite. It's a fantastic days shopping and experience
m. l.
Shambles in York is a great little area, if you like the feel of an old town. Houses close together (to shade the hanging meat from the sun in ages gone by.) Fudge shop amazing and some other nice little places to ponder.
D. K. W.
A unique shopping experience; the shambles feels like you have been transported back in time, or to another magical world, pleanty of gift opportunities and some very unique boutiques including a very special one for all things wizardly!
K. W.
Lovely old buildings but not much else to recommend. The shops didn't ring my bells and seemed expensive. Still good to see again
V. H.
Cute street that apparently inspired Rowling's Diagon Alley. The interesting buildings have upper floors that jut out above the street. Interesting to know that the street used to be for butchers, completely different to the street now, a bustling street of tourist shops (including fudge shops and 2+ Harry Potter stores). A Market is also situated nearby, with tables of hats, books, and more, and food trucks serving nice smelling foods.
T. M.
Excellent but not as old as I remember seeing it 60yrs ago. But great place to visit
S. H.
What a nice walk around and lovely shops.
Highly recommend especially now with the great Christmas market on i personally would recommend that everyone has a walk around the Christmas market then go down the Shambles both soo impressive..
D. S.
Of course overrated as almost every tourist attraction. It looks nice and cute but too many people and just your regular narrow old streets.
P. C.
One of the must visit places in York with buildings dating back to the 1400s. Is reported to have been the inspiration for Diagon Alley from the Harry Potter books. Visit shops and restaurants of all types, including a number specialising in Harry Potter memorabilia. Can be very busy on a warm summer or weekend afternoon.
