Reviews of York Theatre Royal
D. B.
Just come back from their Christmas panto and can gladly recommend this place without reservation. We had a great time and were all highly impressed with the tasteful surroundings.
It's a spacious, well-kept and presented setting that doesn't feel too overwhelmingly big or distant from the stage. Easy to get to on foot and within convenient distance of more than one car park. A great way to take in a show and I'll be attending again.
S. A.
Went to see The Little Shop of Horrors and it was amazing! I'm a huge fan of the show and the team did amazing. Twoey was so good and having a person as the voice moving around just amazing.
H. E. M.
Absolutely fantastic Peter Pan! Just like last year! Captain hook and mrs smee hilarious as always and every other actor and actress 👏 musicians sound lighting and FOH staff too. Thank you all for a wonderful show. Hilarious in fact. Thank you to Fiona for meeting my daughter's needs, you went above and beyond 💜 and thank you for the birthday shout outs - you made her day 💜
M. G.
Absolutely fantastic venue. I was in York for one day and just coincidentally came across Guy Fawkes on the 5th of November, I couldn't resist. The theatre is a beautiful building with bars at each floor to keep service running smooth. And the staff were so friendly and accommodating
S. W.
Good view from the majority of seats. Felt I was close enough to see everything from the Dress Circle. Easy to navigate your way around the building.
Tickets prices are quite expensive, but if you buy in bulk there is a discount, so I booked for several shows at the same time to get full benefit.
No parking, but it's the centre of York, so nobody should really be expecting a big car park.
D. K.
A brilliant Christmas pantomime (Peter Pan) with a great cast, loads of ridiculous action and corny jokes and a full house. The audience loved the panto - and so did we and our grandchildren! Highly recommended!
w. c.
Just been to pantomime at the Theatre - Royal - travelled up from Norfolk. What a wonderful venue. The pantomime was absolutely brilliant- scenery good, sound, acoustics and atmosphere second to none! Tinker bell-(Maddie Moate) Captain Hook, Mrs Smee, Mr Starkey plus all cast were amazing! Great night out for all the family, highly recommend it!
W. N.
Superb venue! Really loved seeing 'The Mirror Crack'd' here. A great interpretation and cast! Then saw Suzie and Joe on BBC Breakfast the next morning. Fantastic.
P. B.
The theatre is fantastic. We went for the first time to see the pantomime.
The panto was also fantastic.
This year we went to see The new adventures of Peter Pan..It was brilliant I recommend all to see.
All the staff we came across were delightful
M. C.
Wonderful theatre wonderful show. Down from Scotland on holiday decided to go to the pantomime. Worth the time and the money. Well done to all the actors.
K. B.
The theater hall is fresh and well renovated. The extension has a beautiful design with bars, there is also alcohol 😯. I will definitely come back.
M. S.
An amazing pantomime, Peter Pan. My daughter and I loved it. We were there Christmas Eve at 11am. A great building to be in. Worth going to.
R. L.
Nice place, good all round views. Cafe needs extra staff and better layout to avoid queing
P. S.
Excellent venue and Peter Pan was by far the best pantomime my group of seven had ever seen.
D. T.
Good family entertainment in an excellent venue. Staff helpful and attentive.
J.
Great theatre and very accommodating staff.
Close to nearby car parks and reasonable prices for drinks and confectionery.
A. S.
Nice theatre. First 4 rows no rake so be warned as stage is high
.
R. D.
Good theatre, modern inside with good facilities and great staff. Typical of most shows now, you get some in the audience who insist on talking throughout. If you are one of these people, trust me, it is annoying everyone around dyou.
J. S.
Great place. The new adventures of Peter Pan was fantastic - highly recommend
N.
Visited to see The Secret Garden performance while we were in the city over the summer and it was such an enjoyable evening. Fantastic production and the decorations they had put up in honour of the show were a lovely touch. Would definitely recommend this theatre
T. H.
My wife and I like to see murder mysteries the theatre put some very good one's on. The staff are always very polite and helpful. Example I had a operation week before and the chairs we had we're in the middle of the row it was better for me to sit on the end of the row one of the staff asked everyone if they would move two seats in so I could sit on the end chair and everyone did big thanks to all Trevor. Other than that the new cafe is very nice food not to expensive you can get life to the next two floors. The new seats are better i think that they are digger and a bit more room. This was a very good and had a good twist at the end 😯😯
M. A.
A wonderful building and great theatre, good facilities. Always worth a visit. A great part of York.
A. W.
Beautiful theatre. Great cafe. Saw Lucy worsely there. Staff friendly and helpful.
K. R.
Lovely compact theatre with great acoustics. Box office staff very helpful. Bars were small but didn't need to wait at all. Will definitely check out what's on at York Theatre Royal on my next visit.
b. t.
I visited this cafe for a drink whilst waiting for my partner who was seeing a show. Which she thoroughly enjoyed.
The cafe I found was restful and a quiet place to relax as I waited.
The staff were friendly and helpful, even though I only had a coffee
Good place to stop of at
S. G.
Brilliant time seeing the Peter Pan pantomime!
L. M.
Love this theatre, seats are comfy and always great performances 😊
N. B.
A very nice and close theatre. You feel vey close to the stage from almost anywhere. Really enjoyed my visit and can't wait to go back
N. S.
Great venue bean twice good both times as we always enjoy drama and satire among other jandras
A. H.
Amazing to be back at the theatre after so long. Very well organised with social distancing and a lot of cleaning. I felt very safe here. Thank you!
J. A.
Other theatre is better......this one is just a bit poky in the theatre room.
D. P.
Went to see phentermine with the grandson and all the family it was fantastic . My family all enjoyed it and will now book for next year.
C. H. (. H. C.
Popped into the cafe for hot drinks, lovely staff and fantastic hot chocolate.
J. S.
Super little old world theatre with a real authentic atmosphere. Just short of leg room.
M. T.
Daughter loved it. First panto she's seen. All the cast were great. It was engaging. Great sets. Really good acrobatics by two of them. For me the ugly sisters stole the show. They were hilarious
C. R.
A great night of jazz ,. The reason for 4 stars, is the leg room was very tight.
J. W.
Very nice theatre & great musical...Girl from the North Country.
J. C.
Lovely old theatre that has had some restoration, good theatre café with very nice staff
G. D.
Lovely building and the service was very good also the show we went to see was brilliant
w. r.
Nice beer before pantomime. Good view of stage, and could hear from circle.
P. A.
Great theatre with some good shows but I felt really uncomfortable being one of only 6 people wearing a mask at a sell out performance. It has really put me off visiting again. Even though the pre show announcement asked everyone to wear a mask it was completely ignored.
L. E.
Brilliant no waiting straight in fantastic seat. Nice clean and airy. Saw the dinosaurs Brilliant one very happy grandson.
T. O.
Gotta love YTR! We saw the Saturday matinee of Julius Caesar from the Globe on tour. Great to have the opportunity to see what they are up to without the schlep to London. It was my first visit to the venue in decades and full marks to the guy at the box office for explaining what to do with the tickets he helped me find on my phone! Lovely guy on the door too - really friendly. The show was fun. Excellent JC and probably the best friends romans etc speech I have ever seen (and there have been many 🤓). Hilarious and sinister. Shout out to Casca as well- an inspired performance of the bit where he tells us about Caesar refusing the crown but really creative throughout. Rest of company ok but a bit variable across the piece. Some great moments but folk playing multiple parts made the later acts a bit baffling at times. Intriguing and enlightened choice to play Brutus and Cassius as women (including pronouns most of the time) and my companion thought there might have been a lesbian live triangle implied between Brutus, Portia and Cassius. You can see the production gave us lots to talk about. Including the rather upbeat ending (not mentioned in the trigger warning illustrated) which sent us on our way with a smile.
I. H.
A very enjoyable first visit. Loved the building and loved the show.
M. W. (.
The theatre is lovely, a real mix of modern and traditional. The staff are so friendly and helpful. The bar has a good selection of drinks, ice cream and snacks.
S. k.
Lovely quite intimate theatre just watched little shop of horrors great production awesome cast had a wonderful time
E. H.
Been for the pantomime every year since I was probably 3, as did my mum. It's a family tradition held by many from York. The best performance I've ever seen as far as panto goes, beautiful venue and the loveliest staff.
R. l. c.
1st visit after covid. Theatre full, lovely to see a professional production
Still very long queues for the loo though!
R. M.
Visit a few times a year every year, most recent was the Cinderella Pantomime. Theatre is beautiful building, well maintained, staff are knowledgeable and actually follow regulations and challenge compliance which makes you feel safe and looked after.
Theatre is small and cosy which is good for ambiance, the negative that goes with that is it gets very warm and seating is pretty cramped
J. K.
Stunning building, newly renovated.
Small cosy theatre. Cafe / bar with good atmosphere.
My only complaint is that there is very little leg room - just like the old big theatres.
C. R.
The staff are incredibly helpful to people with disabilities, the venue is beautiful and the interior breathtaking. I would highly recommend. Also coffee is not madly overpriced.
C. S.
A beautiful theatre. Very good facilities. As a family we have enjoyed many great pantos and this year's Cinderella didn't disappoint. Can't wait to book for next Christmas.
J. E.
Visited the cafe, ok but limited menu. Pleasant staff.
K. M.
A wonderful old Theatre, it’s restoration has made it a delightful venue to visit and enjoy live theatre. Delicious food served. Good amenities. In the heart of York.
J. H.
Excellent performance of Girl from the North Country, great night out with friends!!
T. C.
Jean was a star to my good lady, fabulous venue. Thank you
T. S.
havent been this year but it is a beautiful place with quality acts
V. M.
Great venue, bit pricy at the bar but have some great shows on
E. C.
Exactly what you want an older theater the staff very helpful if the show you want to see is on go it's worth the trip👍
J. T.
As always a wonderful pantomime with a brilliant cast which I've got to know over the past 31 years. Why anyone would want to destroy this successful formula is beyond me.
J. M.
Smashing theatre. Pic is of Stewart Lee's set. Snarky one!
m. r.
What a fantastic show,Madagascar the musical, totally enjoyable from the start ,definitely for children and adults ,atmosphere really warm nice hostilary
E. T.
Pleasant place for a coffee. Scones expensive but toasted sandwiches a good price. Sandwich was nice but a little too greasy for my taste. Would go again.
S. S.
Great productions, lovely staff, nice beer, historic location.
J. M.
Went to see magic goes wrong; theatre is beautifully appointed, and all the folks working there were very helpful. Wonderful way to spend an evening.
E. L.
A really lovely theatre, full of history and with an excellent revamp recently. All in all you get a comfortable seat, a good view and some really excellent theatre.
From a performer's point of view the backstage facilities are not half bad and the staff are great and really helpful. You even get more history behind the scenes!
In summation, for incoming companies and audiences alike it's a lovely venue. Enjoy!
P. H.
Love love love it here.. always pop in for a coffee when in York, as much a part of a visit to York for me as a walk past the minster.
W. C.
I took my grand daughter for a tour of the theatre Royal. Very interesting to discover how long a theatre had been on that site. A little disappointed we didn't see dressing room.
W.
Went to see panto there for my child's birthday. All the staff were so helpful and friendly. Even offered a booster seat for my child so they could see better. Great place to go
A. R.
As usual a fabulous performance in wonderful surroundings and great staff
V. P.
Beautiful theatre, easy walk from the Railway station.
h. j.
Loved the guy Fawkes play, very funny.
D. H.
A lovely little theatre with pleasant, helpful staff
C. C.
Amazing night out with my family such a lovely place all the staff so welcoming and the panto was outstanding this is my first panto as an adult and seeing my kids rolling around laughing is the best thing ever can't wait for next year already
D. M.
I visited the cafe. Staff pleasant and helpful. Coffee was fine.
B. C.
I must admit that my usual visits to this theatre is for the annual panto. A lot of work has been done recently in upgrading theatre and the improvements are spot on. The café is good to visit at any time with easy access, and when it comes to shows, there's now a lift to get you to the various floors. It's a bit tight for a wheelchair, but I did share the lift with a wheelchair user and all went well. There's also an accessible toilet which I haven't used, but I'm assured will take a wheelchair too. Many happy memories of my visits here, and can't wait to go back again !
J. J.
Absolutely fabulous pantomime. All the fun, laughs, skills and professionalism that make a panto great. Can't wait for Peter Pan next year
E. O.
This is a lovely old theatre, seats were comfortable with a reasonable amount of leg room. Unfortunately the foyer area was a bit chaotic due to cafe customers queueing as well as box office customers.
s. n.
Great venue and very friendly staff.
T. O. T. D. Y.
Great location and atmosphere
Get more bar staff or have pre ordered interval drinks. Service really slow. Ice cream counter closed. So selling ice cream at the bars making the queues longer.
D. A.
Brilliant show and place thank you
D. N.
The theatre is excellent. Staff are friendly, the foyer and cafe area are lovely with a dressing up box for small people. Unfortunately we were there to see the panto, which was poor. Thankfully they have a new team for next year which can only be a good thing.
L. E.
Went to see Lotte Wakemans The Hound of the Baskervilles. Totally enjoyable and lots of fun and amusing and crazily creative performances by just 3 actors.
Always a great atmosphere at York Theatre Royal, highly recommend.
E. G.
Here to see Peter Pan Oh no we're not Oh yes we are ha ha ha
P. W.
Went to see Cinderella pantomime today definitely the best we've been to. Great fun for all the family. Highly recommend to everyone,
N. P.
Great night, fabulous production of Homecoming. Lovely theatre with really good facilities for the less able!
E. W.
We came to watch Nigel Slater’s Toast the other week! We managed to book front row seats which was great and they were not right next to the stage! There was so much leg room and great viewing as we had no one blocking our view. The play was excellent and the scent of burnt toast was wafting all over during the play! Great venue!
s.
A lovely personable theatre.
The coffee's are delicious and worth just popping in for one.
The staff are always friendly and welcoming.
There are nice toilets, good disabled access and a nice bar area as well as coffee point.
T. B.
Lovely venue that is an interesting combination of old and new. The theatre is well equipped with comfortable seating which is steeply banked from about the fourth row back so has good view of the stage. We had third row seats which probably had a poorer view than further back but it didn't spoil the show at all. There's a good choice of food and drink too in the bistro and cafe areas.
D. P.
Really good venue and staff.
S. R.
I
A regular venue for myself and my family to see a range of excellent stage productions. Our favourites are the musicals. Lovely theater, good comfortable seating with excellent viewing from across the theatre. It is an excellent day out with bar and cafe facilities. We love it.
J. C.
Wonderful performance of The Magic Flute... congratulations to York Opera.
The theatre had done nothing to make the audience feel secure. No Covid precautions.
P. B.
Always a huge fan of this place. Seen many wonderful plays throughout the years. The new update of the place really makes it stand out beautifully.
T. M.
A wonderful theatre right in the heart of this beautiful city.
P. R.
Cool venue, nice setting, gallery seats are unbearable.
Have only sat in the gallery so don't know if this applies to the other seats too, but they were absolutely perpendicular, two boards covered in red cloth. Totally unsuitable if you have a bad back or any first world notions of comfort. Additionally, almost no space under them to place so much as a coat.
The rest of the venue was, however, delightful
F. D.
Love this place..went on a drama group, made to feel welcome, love staff.
M. T.
Best pantomime in the world....
Gonna miss the only Dame I've ever known in 40 years of panto!!
S.
Liked it so much, I joined up for annual membership. There's something going on almost every day of the week. The main Theatre Hall is a good size for shows whilst still being intimate between actors and audience. Enjoy!
G. S.
Same as every other one of these - if you are XXXL is XS you will find plenty of choice….
M. T.
Lovely evening at the theatre Royal to see the best dame of all time. The cast are like a family who besides performing the rubbish genuinely love and enjoy each others company. Always a warm welcome from the dame "me babbies me bairns".
Always a fantastic, fun, laughter filled evening and the best way to kick off our Christmas.
Best panto ever! ❤️
A. E.
The actual theatre is great. Old fashioned, easy to see and hear and not stiflingly hot. However, the facilities are woefully inadequate despite a recent facelift, hence 1 star off. 3 toilets on the ground floor ladies and not enough seating for people to drink refreshments in the cafe area. Giant sofas and armchairs use up valuable space. Also the ice cream lady didn't come in during interval.
J. C.
York is blessed with many theatres, hosting a range of shows, this one however is the go to place to see unique shows or musicals. Friendly staff, help and booking desk not to forget a lovely cafe the entire layout is easily accessible despite being on multi floors. All in all this building host shows as amazing as the place looks!
M. B.
Friendly and beautiful theatre worth the visit
L. T.
Great place, saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show - World Tour here. Could do with a little updating, & be mindful of the seats, they either snap close before your fully stood up or dont go up at all. Staff were friendly & helpful, they even dressed up & got into the spirit of the show 👍😁 drinks are a little pricey & there are not many toilets, so be careful how much you drink. Finally, there is no parking in the immediate area, but loads within a 10min walk. All in all, i would recommend seeing a show here
D. A.
Since last year's refurbishment the stalls are now the best place to sit - rows G to Know are best. More bars, a large cafe and an outdoor space add to the ambiance.
Update: april 2021. The new membership benefits, amended considerably during 2020, have rendered membership pointless for all but the most regular theatre-goers. There are a number of reasons the theatre should be offering worthwhile breaks for regular users, just paying lip service to membership benefits is insufficient.
Still not great if you 6 foot +.
J. M.
I have always been to the York Theatre Royal with my family every year and we always have a great time. Lovely staff, performances on point and an all round fantastic way to spend an evening.
P. G.
Lovely little theatre, good facilities, comfy seats, very friendly staff.
V. W.
We went to see The Last Ship which we thoroughly enjoyed along with the rest of the audience who at the conclusion gave the cast a standing ovation. The only downside was either the lack of air conditioning or the temperature was not set low enough. We were sitting in the Dress Circle so people must have been melting higher up. One of the cast remarked during the show that we were sitting in a velvet lined oven!
R. C.
A great theatre in the centre of York with good bus connections. The theatre is a short walk from the train station (or two bus stops on numerous lines) and is quite close to the minster. Housed in a lovely historic building with a beautiful modern extension the theatre hosts a large variety of plays and workshops throughout the year. There is also a bar/cafe at the theatre that is not too expensive and has a nice range of food and drink.
P. G.
Well organised, booked tickets online and felt safe.
s. s.
Great show with welcoming staff.
J. T.
An enjoyable evening watching the performance of Oliver.some new songs and the actors played their parts very well and with great enthusiasm.
The theatre itself is spectacular.seating area clean.well kept.
Stairways clear and safe.facillities clean.
We enjoyed a pre show drink ..food was available to order.
E. P.
Fantastic production of guys and girls with production quality rivalling the west end. The theatre itself is fantastically maintained mixing a modern contemporary foyer and bar with the traditional theatre. Good leg room in the theatre seats.
a. m.
Very good night. Enjoyed O & X
D. W.
A truly magical place. While the entrance is modern and functional, the theatre itself has maintained all of it's historic charm. It's just a pity the seating hasn't been updated. No room for anyone 6' tall or, in my case, taller! However the quality of the production made the uncomfortable seats bearable.
I go here at least twice a year and always forget the discomfort as it is overshadowed by the otherwise faultless experience.
J. H.
Lovely theatre, beautifully sculpted around the original building. Good bar and food options, friendly service, clean loos.
G.
I Totally Love York Theatre Royal it is such a lovely place stunningly beautiful decor the staff are amazing. The shows they put especially the annual pantomime that I have been to for the last ten years are top quality so all I can say is go to York take the city and then cap it off with a top flight performance from at this historic epic theatre.
l. w.
Best panto we have ever seen and we go to many every year . Great cast great show.friendly staff and top bar
D. O.
Massive queue for the bar, slightly cramped for taller folk. Full of character and professional staff though.
D. G.
Even getting stuck in traffic and being ten mins late for the show all staff were friendly and helpful to get us to our seats without too much disruption to other viewers
C. W.
The children's plays in The Studio are always marvellous and The Storm Whale was no exception, despite the director filling in for the father who was unwell. We then had a really tasty, very reasonably priced meal. Worth every penny.
S. F.
Amazing theatre with great facilities and freindly staff, good cafe and bar and the theatre itself is brilliant, brilliant theatre in the heart of York would definitely go back :)
D. B.
Beautiful theatre, really helpful staff
B. L.
Went to see a show in the Studio theatre--elves and the shoemaker - and really lovely intimate place for a kids play 😀
c. c.
Such an amazing place. Comfy seats, lovely staff that are always willing to help. Drinks aren't too pricey for this sort of place. The non reusable cups they use are good for the planet (not plastic cups) always a bonus.
B. G.
Saw the latest Matthew Bourne production, The Midnight Bell - excellent! Staff were helpful and the theatre beautiful - a great facility for York.
A. W.
Really good show.
A. W.
A lovely theatre in central York with good views of the stage from all seats. The bench seating up in the gallery is not the most comfortable, though.
C. P.
Absolutely brilliant, enjoyed every minute, all the cast were amazing & afterwards we were lucky enough to meet some of the cast 😀
K. G.
Great venue, but chili as they still have the doors open. Great staff. Really helpful.
A. B.
Went to see Chekhov's The Seagull in the studio. Brilliant, really enjoyed it. Most of the cast were superb. Humour well delivered, great costumes and simple set. Great experience
D. N.
We went to see an excellent performance of 'Swallows and Amazons' and had seats in the second row from the front in the stalls.
The theatre is in Victorian style, but relatively small and cosy.
Easy to hear and see everything.
Yummy Yorevale ice-cream available during the intermission.
C. G.
Great little theatre with a fab view from every seat I would think
Nice cafe with delicious coffee
D. P. (.
I went to see 'Handbagged' today with my husband. The staff at the theatre were amazing, one lady in particular (I'm sorry I didn't get a name) saved my anniversary and I can't thank her enough. The play was brilliant.
B. K.
Wonderful theatre. Seats are comfy and the staff are friendly and helpful. The theatre itself is small so you get a lovely feeling if closeness with the artists performing.
A. B.
Saw Carmen this evening, it was an amateur production but of a very high standard. We visited the box office yesterday to buy a our tickets and the lady on the desk was so kind and helpful. Even took us up to the dress circle and showed us where our seats would be. A great theatre with wonderful staff
C. A.
Only went in for the cafe. Peaceful place to sit. Spacious. Didn't feel self conscious sitting alone.
W. G.
Went with my daughter to the pantomime and we liked it.
L. D.
Lovely visit to York Theatre Royal to see Bring on the Bollywood. New theatre seats very comfy. Whole theatre is so much improved since refurbishment. Production was great, dancing and costumes were a delight. Brilliant!
K. T.
Fantastic experience. Lovely little stage. We've visited with our 5 year old to see Elves and shoemakers and chosen a relaxed performance option. He enjoyed it very much.
C. S.
We went to see the 2019 panto - Sleeping Beauty. Excellent panto - fantastic costumes, wonderful dancing and a really good baddie! It's different from the 'old days' (with Berwick Kaler) but just as good. Some of the other members of the cast have been able to step up a gear, now that they are not over-shadowed by the old dame.
S. D.
Saw 'The Secret Garden' here recently with my family and the show was really good. My only gripe is that I'm currently wearing a brace on my right leg and although I can bend my knee a little - I can't bend it enough to sit in the regular seats. Box office staff suggested that I sit on the end of a row with eye level view of the stage - the seat was fine all except for a great big metal post in the way of my foot! Just meant I was uncomfortable after a while. Not sure what purpose those posts serve but I could have done without them for sure ;-)!
C. S.
You are never to old for Peter Pan! 👍🏻😃
M. S.
Toilet facilities much improved after the refurb of a few years ago...but the seats in the auditorium seem to be a little less wide than before! Amazing programme of events runs throughout the year with the year ending with Keller Berwick's panto...always relevant and topical. Mustn't miss!!
G. H.
Gorgeous building, with lovely stadf. Always a good experience - in the audience, backstage and on stage.
B. H.
I've never attended a show here, but have popped into the great little cafe several times and thoroughly enjoyed it. Also child friendly which makes things easy for us when we're in the area with my daughter.
C. S.
Tremendous theatre and excellent staff.
E. H.
Great coffee shop and light lunches.
H. W.
Good show, great staff, new stall seating makes it much easier to see
J. l. e. o. n. a.
I love york theatre royal it is a beautiful building and very atmosheric. I have been going since i was a child and it is still exciting to go there. Tonight i took my grandson to see the panto the grand old dame of york which was great and very funny. We had a thoughly good evening.
K. B.
Arrived for pantomime, got shown our seats but people were sat in them so was told to sit in the restricted view seats until interval! They weren't cheap tickets I bought, you'd expect the staff to move the people sat in OUR seats we paid for rather than ushering us to seats where we could hardly see for half the performance! 😒
D. H.
Saw The Last Ship here. Seating is extremely steep and up in the top there we had a limited view of the stage which was not mentioned when buying the tickets. Really nice place though and the performance was excellent.
i. c.
Decent city theatre with plenty of space to meet up and have a drink before the start of the performance. Nice, cosy theatre itself with good accoustics and clear view of the stage.
K. S.
Fantastic theatre with great views from most seats. What an amazing show put on. We saw The Gondoliers and it was amazing. Fantastic choreography and even better score.
m.
Classic old theatre with recently modernised seats and facilities. Excellent range of shows both in main house and studio, many produced in-house. Nice bar and coffee lounge. Loved it.
L. H.
i often go and see performances here, and it is a brilliant theatre. it is getting a bit old however it is being re designed later this year. The staff are always lovely and happy to help.
g.
Pleasant theatre, staging some interesting and quality plays. Foyer areas and gents toilets are rather chaotic. Nice touch in providing free fresh drinking water.
I. C.
Nice little theatre and a very enjoyable pay (Educating Rita) … however like most theatres insufficient leg room at seat!
J. B.
Just had a coffee and cake. Lovely place really nice staff. Really nice for a cuppa and a snack. Not expensive
T. H. G. D. H. A.
Been to see the panto for the last three years, the last two of which have been here at York Theatre Royal, as it was closed for refurbishment the first year. As such, the facilities are good, but it has still retained much of its character.
F. R.
Very good
M. P.
What a great venue. You feel so close and up with the action. The architecture is modern but tasteful, staff are great. Plenty of legroom which is a must for me. Two thumbs up.
N. E.
Berwick kalers panto is the sole reason I go here. Sadly this is the last year but hopefully the theatre royal can keep up to his outstanding performances with his crew. Beautiful theatre and very fond memories of the place
W. H.
Went to the Takeover festival scratch night at the National Railway Museum last night. It was fab! Was good to see such a variety of local artists performing next to the railway museum's posh royal carriages. They were all brill but Don Walls's piece about York beggars was a well deserved winner - looking forward to seeing it in full when Takeover comes back next year.
J. G.
Beautiful and friendly with good facilities.
It's lovely both in the Croft and the main theatre, with lots of educational things occurring throughout the year.
Obviously the pantomime is a highlight for families. Jx
S. S.
This is a beautiful place where you can begin to find magic at any time and any age.the shows and plays are done to exceptional standards. Well worth a visit from anyone of any age.
j. g.
Amazing place. I've been going there since 1960
I've seen so many good productions.
J.
Evita was lovely show. we Hadd a good view of stage.
P. R.
Fantastic venue with a great vibe. Drinks are very expensive though. So would look to the Lamb and Lion or the Exhibition round the corner for a pre event tipple.
A. F. R.
Went to see a Pantomime here after the restauration and I find it so beautiful. Good sound, good view from the balcony and really nice coffee before get inside. Well done to the York Theatre Royal
R. W.
One of the best regional theatres, good plays, friendly and welcoming staff, recent refurbishment very well done to make it a comfortable place to drop in. If you want to know why supporting the performing arts is important go to the theatre royal York!
J. H.
Birthday lunch. My friends took me out for lunch and the food and service was excellent. Ally Hales is a credit to you. Her attention to detail is second to none. Will definitely be back.
V. B.
Have loved this Theatre since childhood & am delighted productions still include lots of interest for adults & youngsters inc smaller studio shows looking forward to going on a behind the scenes tour Monday/Friday for public
M. E.
Still my favourite theatre in York. Such an intimate space where every seat feels close to the stage.
A. S.
A well-loved part of the York city amenities, recently refurbished. Wonderful range of shows, don' t just think if it as the venue for the Pantomime, there's much more to enjoy there.
Y. R.
The Theatre Royal is a lovely little theatre and the production of An Inspector Calls is excellent. Not a great theatre for those of us over six feet tall though, really quite cramped and uncomfortable all of which detracts from the enjoyment.
A. E.
The production was very good. Women in Black. Poor selection of beers and wines. Bar staff could do to smile a little more! A great asset to York
M. A.
Friendly staff and a reasonably priced, good show. Really enjoyed my time there.
R. L.
The Christmas panto here is the best in Yorkshire! Facilities clean but could do with better choice of snacks e.g bags of sweets/chocolates rather than brownies
J. P.
Always a pleasure to see the panto. The genius of Berwick Kaler will be sadly missed. The food in the cafe is also rather good.make sure you are hungry, because the portions are very generous!
P. &. R.
Beautyful Places great construction
P. W.
Lovely old theatre, seating good, sanitiser available, good news all round!
F. F.
Unfortunately I have not had the pleasure to assist a performance, yet. Five stars for the Box Office kindness and efficiency.
G. P.
Went to see the Panto which was good if a bit loud at times. The seating was very comfortable and since the seats were raked steeper during the refurb vision is excellent.
S. B.
Saw a great talk by Joe Walker, editor for Dune
J. A.
Rather a lot of swearing.! But a good performance
C. M.
Lovely theatre.
L. B. a. B. L. C.
Footloose, great show and lovely theatre we will be back again
R. L.
Brilliant. Saw Berwick Kalor in one of his last performances as Panto dame. Great fun was had by one and all! Hope Theatre Royal can get a worthy replacement.
M. D.
Collected tickets from here for the John Cooper Theatre near Monk Bar. Staff very helpful and kept me updated on cancellation of show and replacement performance.
R.
Lovely modern space with some interesting productions.
J. L.
Very good theatre - refreshments (including light snacks) available. The Christmas season pantomimes are a famous speciality.
i. i.
Swallows and Amazons was a fantastic show, theatre staff very friendly. Not much leg room though but a thoroughly enjoyable evening
S. G.
Great repertory theatre which provides an eclectic and innovative range of productions to complement mainstream offerings. Their pantomime is about the last traditional format. Ie free from non celebrity and soap actors
D. R.
Well. I thought people were exaggerating when some reviews said the staff weren't very hospitable, but we were greeted by one of the rudest women when picking up our tickets in advance. Firstly she snubbed us for not picking up tickets for that night, which was seemingly an easier task for her to do, and then she proceeded to ignore us for five minutes while she continued what she was doing before we arrived. When she asked for our details she thrust her ear towards us (she had a hearing aid, but it would have been far polite to ask "can you speak up, please?" than to just say nothing and do this action instead) when she couldn't hear us. She printed our tickets and said nothing, i asked if that's all we needed and she bluntly said yes. Very strange woman to have on a reception. Not a smile in sight, and very rude.
The place itself however looks impressive and we're looking forward to the play.
S. G.
Went to see Madagascar the musical! Well worth it! Absolutely amazing performance, matt as the lion and the guy who played Julian stole the show!!
s. c.
Evita- a brilliant performance!! It was lovely to be back in the beautiful Theatre Royal
E. R.
Madagascar was an amazing show. Couple blind spots to the stage and sat right next to speakers. But all in all had a great time x
M. B.
Dick Whittington and his meerkat was, for me, the very best. I loved seeing Berwick and his team as a kid, but being able to take my daughter and share with her and the rest of my family such an imaginative, vibrant and hilarious experience this year was brilliant. I didn't like it, I loved it. Not even bitter I've been going to the panto for years and I still haven't got a flippin' wagon wheel!
S. T. T. T.
Watched Pride and Prejudice. It was an amazing performance. If you're a student, you can get discounts. Make sure you get there before the play starts. Otherwise, you won't be allowed to get in.
K. H.
Play wasn't ro my taste but geand old theater
P. W.
Very good
p. s.
Comfortable, clean and well laid out. Excellent sound quality. Very enjoyable
A. S.
Lovely old theatre, with some new comfortable seating. Good variety of shows and events. Excellent menu. Good toilets.
A. W.
Small theatre with efficient helpful staff. Full cofid measures in place.
J. B.
Decent piece of quiche in a very pleasant cafe - I especially like the raw stone columns. Shame that the bottles of ginger beer were so small, but you can't have everything
S. H.
The pantomime was excellent Berwick Kaler was excellent along with all the cast. We laughed alot it was very entertaining. I shall be booking for all my family for the next panto. Thank you Sunniva Hartwell.
R. M.
Just watched a fabulous Cinderella pantomime. Very enjoyable, I highly recommend this show
A. G.
Brilliant venue and great panto Cinderella. Worth a visit +++
D. T.
A wonderful space in the heart of the city. Great performances, and a nice place to spend time if you are in the area, with a spacious cafe/seating area that is usually quite quiet.
M. G.
A fantastic theatre!
D. D.
Beautiful space and great facilities. Full step free access limited. The bar is good, but do pre-order drinks for the interval.
D. T.
I have been going to this data over 20-years lovely historic building the restaurant and cafeteria are really good
P. F.
Fabulous auditorium. Thoroughly enjoyed Magic Goes Wrong.
A.
Saw the Grand old Dame if York. The panto was okay, although the lack of a storyline was a disspointment. The theatre was very hot to the point it made viewing unpleasant.
S. F.
A great variety of shows. Friendly front of house staff. The only place for improvement is the cafe snacks. They are a little uninspiring, for the price.
C. N.
Saw The secret garden there and the play was really good and lovely. The theatre is very comfortable and nice and the restaurant has delicious dishes
R. S.
Dinosaur live was great show with the kids
M. P.
Tonight's performance of The Million dollar quartet was one of the best things I've seen in ages! So energetic, informative, fun and slick
C. C.
We go every year for the panto. The new renevations are lovely. The food and drink isn't overly expensive and the atmosphere is brilliant. We love it.
N.
We went in for coffee and cake. It was nice enough but think they could be a bit friendlier - asked about a cake and the signs were in the wrong place, staff made out like I was a bit stupid.
They had no specials on the specials board either.
H. M.
Brilliant. Saw the first Panto Berwick was in and now seen his last. I salute you Berwick, no one else can play a Dame like you do. You will be so sadly missed
M. C.
The iinside is beautiful, the acoustics are great and the stage is deep. Please note that the layout means the top gallery can trigger vertigo attacks.
E. H.
Very beautiful theatre. Play OK, but that's because of my taste.
A. B.
Lovely old theatre.
S. N.
Went to see Guys and Dolls. First time being there since refurb. Brilliant job and really lovely evening. Highly recommend whatever your taste
P. T.
Here for a work event using one of the meeting rooms. Very good space and great food and coffee. I'd host my own meeting here in the future.
S. T.
Lovely venue. Seats are small and uncomfortable. If you're not petite, it does make the show a little uncomfortable.
D. B.
The Theatre Royal is one of the country's best regional theatre's. It puts on a good and varied program of it's own and touring productions.
J. T.
Fantastic show - Oliver. Venue is lovely, the seats are very comfortable, with good leg room.
M. B.
Lovely decoration in this theatre...very ornate with the plus side of a modern bar for pre theatre drinks and modern toilets. So central too ....near the Minster in the city centre.
J. B.
Absolutely fantastic theatre. Lovely bar and cafe with a relaxed outdoor seating area.
V. B.
Nice staff, spacious seating areas around several bars so no long queues, beautiful compact auditorium.
B. R.
Lovely theatre. Really enjoyed the show 'Handbagged'. Only downside were the bar prices... EXTORTIONATE!
M. K.
Lovely place, toilets left something to be desired, gents could of done with a good clean, ended up using the unisex toilets which I stood in line for with a 2 year old busting to go.......
A. Y.
Brilliant experience from entering the building to the moment you leave. Tip top entertainment in a much better than average venue.
E.
Saw the brilliant Berwick in his panto here, lovely theatre, it's just had a recent refurb, comfy seats, decent legroom.

Bar on every floor but you can't buy a bag of sweets!

The annual panto is officially the best in the country but following a major refurb the theatre is a fantastic venue for any performance
G. (.
Some amazing pieces of theatre and it now has very comfortable seats since the refurb. The cafe and restaurant are great.
