Reviews of Wharton Park
D. B.
Beautiful park with plenty to see and do. Free toilets and a nice cafe in the same block. Affordable car parking and a great play area. Personal highlights are the view point next to the carved statue of Mr. Wharton himself and the community garden area where they even have home grown plants you can take away after a donation. Lovely at all times of the year.
C. B.
A really nice park on north side of Durham city centre. Up a hill so you get great views across the city. Well maintained and clean and tidy. Cafe open during the day. A community garden with great planting and herbs etc. Playground for children.
A. S.
Very nice park. Especially it's beautiful in the autumn. There is a little playground and a cafe as well. Only thing is that the cafe doesn't allow to bring your own food, but that's ok. It is plenty of choice to have something to eat. 👍
I. R.
Lovely park for families and kids. Not the most accessible due to steps and hills but nevertheless a lovely place. Plenty of activities, lovely views of the cathedral and a number of picnic tables.
T. H.
Beautiful park! Couple little play areas for kids there's also a cafe, Nice views over Durham.
J. F.
Lovely park for all ages plenty for kids to amuse themselves nice views of cathedral and castle good little cafe enjoyable
C. C.
A really nice safe place for the children, be prepared for lots of steep walks, up & down.
Stunning views across Durham City if you just want to sit and relax.
E. K.

Hoping they will continue next year

One of those parks created by a victorian philanthropist. Went on a hot summer day and although the car park is quite small, it had spaces.
There is a cafe with friendly staff and a reasonable selection of food and drinks.
For a small park, they cram in plenty of activities. Kids were swinging on the various bits of kit, playing football and basketball.
There are quiet areas if you want to just relax.
It has an amphitheatre where they hold events.
It is pretty hilly, so if you have mobility issues you may find it steep.
A lovely place, close to the town centre, well worth an hour or two.
N. I.
Nice park, peaceful, clean, with many activities for children and teens
S. A.
Beautiful hilly park with great views over Durham, including the Cathedral, Castle and viaduct bringing the trains in. Lots of activities for children. Some beautiful plants and flowers.
J. H.
Lovely park with plenty to see and do for all ages. Great views over Durham and the cathedral. Little nursery where you can take flowers home for a small donation.
S. F.
I really like this park. Yes you do have to pay for parking but it's got a lot inside it. Kids play areas, a stage for events, cafe, interactive games for kids. Garden grown herbs and veg. It's also not far from the city centre.
I use it with my dog. He loves it. Will definitely be back
s. m.
Lovely views over Durham City. A small park with a nice little cafe and children's play area.take a hot drink and walk to the top admire the views.
R. A.
Loved it. Nice place to go for a stroll. You pay to park even if disabled, but it's a reasonable fee. Also some nice little climbing frames, swings and slides for a range of ages.
G. Β.
Great park in the heart of Durham, literally on top of the train station. Outstanding views of the cathedral!! Car park is tiny so i can imagine in the summer months would be a struggle to find a space. Parking costs 50p per half an hour. There are 3 separate parks, one to the left of the car park with outdoors gym exercise machines, few picnic tables and a stone type of monument. To the right of the car park there is a small play ground with a climbing wall, a roundabout, some swings. There is also a coffee shop with toilets. There is plenty of garden routes to walk around, a communal garden and another play area but for older kids. There is a climbing tower with an insanely sharp slide, I saw a kid fly over the slide and hurt themselves. There is also a 5 a side / basketball court and an outdoors small car track to drive around!! It feels like this old park had been perfectly redesigned for the 21 century. Super impressed!!
C.
The icon of Durham. You can get an eagle view of the entire town from here.
P. M.
Great Park, amazing views, nice cafe, clean toilet facilities and fantastic play areas for kids of all ages.
L. F.
Beautiful park ... we went to see the Brass Band and had a lovely time sitting on the grassy area
J. F.
Weekday visit to the park is extremely peaceful to walk around. We'll maintained park with good views over the castle.
C. M.
Myself and my son spent a fab hour making gargoyles/grotesques in the education room..the lady leading the session was lovely and friendly and even let some of us parents that just couldn't resist the clay, join in!
P. M.
Great park for children and adults of all ages. With superb cafe and facilities allowing you to enjoy the entire day.
Small amount of parking spaces however accessable by foot due to its close proximity to the city centre.
d. n.
Fab park if you are athletic, not great for disabilities as very steep ramps and steps with sharp bends. Great views over Durham City and fab for train spotting
C.
Came for a date here, visited the cafe some some lunch and then strolled around the park for a little before setting down on our picnic blanket. Nice and clean park, good facilities as the cafe and toilets were very clean. Great place for a couple on a casual date or to bring the family.
G. E.
Beautiful park with great views over the city. Lovely little café and plenty of play areas for the children.
B. L.
Lovely park this is definitely a go to with children views of durham beautiful we went with picnic watched brass bands and street performers all free excellent would recommend
P. t.
Beautiful community garden and children's play park close to the centre of Durham. Unrivalled views of the castle and cathedral and easy access to Durham City train station. Five minute walk in to Durham Prince Bishops parking and shops.
M.
Nice, clean park. Lots to see & nice areas for the kids to play safely in. Shop was descent & very reasonably priced.
M. B.
Nice small park in city center
K. A.
A fantastic place to stroll around for the adults, and a great play area for the kids. Beautiful views of Durham Cathedral and castle too. Finish off with a bite to eat in the lovely cafe.
B. Y.
Not a great deal to do so don't base a full day around it. Ideal if you're in town. Facilities are good and very modern. Very steep walk in the car entrance for pedestrians
J. B.
Great park for a stroll, a picnic or to keep the kids entertained for an hour or so.
T. B.
Lovely place to visit with anyone. It's pretty, extremely clean, and spacious. Beautiful place to walk and view Durham and the Cathedral and great parks for kids. The entire park is one big hill though, you've been warned.
I find it easier to start from the train station and make your way down.
S. W.
Small historic park, well worth a visit five minutes walk from Durham centre.
S. R.
Nice park with lovely views over the city from The Battery.
C. D.
Beautiful park with a visitor centre. Toilet facilities were spotless.
N. A.
Amazing flowers in the community gardens and lots of activities for the kids also some local wildlife occassionally needs a helping hand we werenon site tonrescue tgis little felka who had fallen off the bank and been wandering all day some water and a feed upnhe was released back thatvsame evening to re-oin his family😀
J. T.
Lovely views of Durham. Good play/exercise equipment for the kids. Well maintained creative garden space to enjoy. A nice place to spend an hour or so.
S. W.
Lovely park, plenty of steep banks to get the heart rate up. Lovely views across the cathedral and the city of Durham.
Plenty for the kids to do too.
L. N.
The parking isn't expensive for this day an age £1.30 for 1 hour. Has a variety of play equipment and a nice viewing spot overseeing Durham perfect to view the cathedral. Approx 25+ parking spots I believe.
v. c.
Beautiful park with stunning scenery surrounding plenty for kids to do and dogs allowed on leader just perfect car parking available toilets and cafe
D. E.
Mostly great but the roundabout doesn't really go round. Also benches could be better positioned to see more of playground, there are 2 behind a climbing wall which restricts views of the playground.
l. c.
I took my great granddaughter to Wharton Park for a couple of hours and we were not disappointed 3 different play area's for different ages a coffee shop little rides for the younger children for only a £1 well kept gardens and the views from the park are delightful will definitely be returning.
C. W.
Lovely place, including a maze of paths and sculptures, a cafe and a community garden. Worth visiting for the view alone: a great way to start a visit from the station (which has its own entrance, steps only though). Being on a hill may be a problem, but there is a car park at the top.
I. M.
Good for walk. Playground for toddlers.. playground for teens but not for 4 years old
R. P.
Great park for wide range of ages, including big kids! Well kept gardens and beautiful views of Durham Cathedral. Great little cafe on site and accessible toilets. Limited parking which is pay and display.
B. W.
Fantastic views overlooking Durham and the cathedral. Only issue I had was disabled parking you still have to pay and didn't have change so could only use app. 65p for 30 mins but had no choice.
z. c.
Very nice park with lots of ups and downs ♥️
m. l.
Great park facilities. Lots of places and equipment for the children to play on. Handy car park but it does charge and is only very small (currently 60p per half hour). There is a cafe but definitely worth checking opening times before you arrive if you need it. Toilet facilities are all open. Beautiful views of Durham.
V. B.
Good play equipment for all ages but very spaced out so difficult if you have multiple children of differing ages. Parking is 50p per half hour. Lots of steps so not ideal for a pram walk but very pretty and well looked after.
S. W.
Lovely place, great for if you are with children.
R. C.
I really lovely park. OK it is a bit steep in places if you have small children But still I love the playpark for them .
The viewpoint for Durham procedural is fantastic most probably the best in Durham
Well worth a visit and a good cafe.
M. H.
Great views of Durham city landscape.i enjoy walking around here either on my own or with someone.
Large cafe now on site and place area with lots of areas to hide n desk.
The city council have. Slapped a hveavy
D.
Wow!!!
Many years since last visit and they have done a superb job.
There is so much to do and see!
Several kids parks/ outdoor gym for all / superb views over Durham and the cathedral.
New heritage Centre with refreshments.
Something for everyone! BRILLIANT.
A. P.
Really good, well maintained too
My little girl enjoyed herself especially on the zip line
G. W.
A lovely little park with fun activities for children.
r. h.
Nice place for a walk and great views of Durham cathedral, lots of steep banks so not really very good for wheel chair users, out door gym , small charge for parking even disabled badge holders pay but not a vast amount of spaces, childrens play area , miniature golf, play area for older children, sports court, lots of seating , staff in cafe were friendly , electric car area which costs a quid and an amphitheatre, food is nice with hot and cold drinks available and at reasonable prices and snacks.
S. H.
Nice Park, good view of the Cathedral and Durham. Small park and pay for parking.
H. F.
Lovely park. Comunity orientated with a community garden.
Lovely views from the settlement over to the cathedral & train station below
Lots of green space and outdoor games for children.
Very pleasant calm.and enjoyable park. Dogs welcome too.
a. r.
It's a beautiful, lovely and peaceful park, with café, car park and 3 playground equipment for children. I loved it and I am sure I will can back again soon.
C. C.
Beautiful place, great views over Durham
B. M.
This park has changed a lot since I was little, me and my grandma used to always come here when it was just a park with the go carts and a large greenhouse with flowers and fish, it holds a lot of memories for me. Now it has had a major refurbished there is so much more to do. There is now a outdoor toddler play area with a separate large junior play area along with a outdoor gym with gorgeous views of Durham cathedral. There is also a lovely little cafe with a selection of food and drinks. They still have the miniature go carts and putting green which where there before, along with a stunning community garden. There is also lots of other little additions such as a bug hotel, somewhere you can watch the birds and a story corner. This is a wonderful park to visit on a nice day with so much history, so recommend!🌳🍃🌸🌼🌺💖.
a. f.
The cafe had limited choice for food, nothing for vegans but I'd you're a vegetarian that wants to eat cheese there are cheese sandwiches and scones. We had fun with the fitness equipment and kicking up Autumn leaves.
M. S.
Didn't even know this park existed - its a must to visit and so near to City Centre
L. W.
Great Park with amazing views of the city and the cathedral. Had a very nice snack in the cafe.
J. B.
Wharton park is great! So great it's a bit too crowded on a sunny day during covid. Lots of room in some areas but the pathways are too narrow to pass while leaving 2 meters of room. It also has a nice view of Durham Castle. Would recommend for sure
P. W.
Nice place, quite quirky in layout too, though not many level paths - could be quite a challenge for the elderly, or those less-abled as there are a lot of steps in places, and alternative footpaths may be lengthy, steep, or both! Decent cafe and toilets (when open - be aware that the gates (access to a very small, pay carpark) lock at 6pm (early September) Currently, an App available (details in Park) that allows kids to hunt virtual dinosaurs (a bit like Pokemon-Go) - popular with youngsters, as it's possible to then take a photo with the beastie looming over them!
I. W.
The car park was closed so it meant there was nobody there with screaming kids. It was great.!
D. N.
Nice park with variety of facilities suitable for all ages at a very convenient location.
D. R.
Could have had the fencing tidier where bits were closed off to public. Remember to take change for car park . Think it was 50p per 30 minutes and the café is a bit pricey for a bottle of pop
V. C.
Beautiful Park and views of Durham
m. P.
Not easy to get to but worth the effort. Limited parking with meters. There is a cafe and a children's playground. Stunning views of Durham and pleasant gardens /walks.
T. B.
Lovely little park with plenty to keep anyone busy. Old buildings, outdoor gym, miniature golf, mini car track and play park for big kids and even a decent toddlers park. Cafe and toilets on site, food it good and surprisingly not that badly priced. Parking is available but not a lot, it is however pretty cheap at about £1.50 for a couple hours if I remember correctly.
D. B.
Took my niece here a couple of weeks ago and had and absolutely brilliant time! She loved the play area, so much so she didn't want to leave!
We had a drink and snack in the cafe and I was pleasantly surprised to find they had a few gluten free option (brownies, crumpets and pancakes), the staff in there were very helpful and friendly, the cafe is a brilliant addition to the newly renovated park serving a great variety of food and drinks.
M. V.
Good afternoon there, absolutely free (except parking) and has lovely parks for kids of all ages, disabled accessible swings and toilets and a cafe, also has free kids musical shows on a Saturday.
m. s.
It is excellent all round, pity it has limited parking.
J. H.
Excellent! We have taken our children there when young. On this occassion we took our 18 months old grandson. The park and its facilities were tidy, clean and well maintained. The cafe' and building was again clean, tidy with friendly staff. Car parking is limited, but this is acceptable considering the park area .You also have the added bonus of spectacular views of Durham Cathedral from the park battery. It was a pleasing to see a tree sculpture of the parks creator in 1857 of William Lloyd Wharton.
L.
Parking costs 50 pence per half hour, disabled badge holders are not exempt from parking charges and the ticket machine doesn’t appear to give change.
A beautiful park with lots to see, including sculptures, formal gardens, woodland and insect garden areas, a community garden and good children’s play areas.
As to be expected from a town with so many hills there are lots of steps and steep areas on the footpaths so not ideal for those with mobility difficulties, but it is wheelchair accessible and there is plenty of seating to have a rest in lovely surroundings.
Lots of people in other reviews have talked about the spectacular views of the castle, cathedral and town, the views are lovely but it’s just a little too far away and there are too many trees in the way for the views to be truly spectacular and I visited in October when there was considerably less foliage than there would be at other times of the year.
S. P.
Nice park good for children cafe is OK lots to explore unless your over 70 coffee shop is a good place to go
M. D.
Lovely short walks around the park, some steep inclines and steps to navigate Lovely views of the cathedral, we visited the cafe which we thought was a bit pricey.
R. O.
Fantastic park . Lot's of facilities for children's play areas. Beautiful winding paths among trees and shrubs . The area is so scenic and wonderful amongst lovely variety of shapes and shades of foliage. Tea room and toilet facilities.
Fantastic views of city cathedral and surrounding areas. A must for all ages. Pay a visit to Wharton Park. It's amazing. You won't be disappointed.
L. N.
I moved to the Durham area a couple of years ago and have spent time getting to know the area, this was my first visit to Wharton Park. Although on a bank it is wheelchair friendly and has plenty of signs to where access is good and there's plenty of seats available There is plenty for children to do with a play area, outside gym and basketball area. The cafe has a range of sandwiches, jacket potatoes panninies, cakes crisps and drinks. There is a community garden which was very well kept and very colourful with spring plants, we had our lunch her as it was so nice. They have a friends group which manages the garden and there is various events that go on throughout the year. The amphitheatre also has events on. Altogether a very enjoyable way to spend Easter Monday in the sunshine
N. G. (.
Great views of Durham Cathedral and viaduct. Nice for a walk or to bring the children as there is a small play area. There is P&D parking, coffee shop and clean public toilets.
P. M.
Nice clean park on hill with cafe, outdoor gym equipment and separate childrens playgrounds for toddlers and larger children. Wheelchair and pram access paths available in park, but paths are steep from top to bottom in places, so make sure fit person pushing uphill or holding back downhill. At top of park, good views through gap in trees across city to cathedral and castle.
M. D.
1st visit since the refurbishment and will certainly come again. 2 separate play areas for toddlers and older children plus an area with outdoor exercise machines for adults. Lots of activities arranged throughout the summer and would love to come back and listen to the grass band. The cafe is a welcome improvement and serves a range of sandwiches cakes and not and cold drinks at fair prices. Great view of the castle and cathedral and of passing trains.
A. N.
A really lovely park, well laid out with several play areas for all children. Great views over Durham City. There's a coffee shop, with rooms for hire and toilets. Parking is by the half hour (50p) which seems very sensible off you just want to make a quick visit
P. R.
Beautiful park for walking and relaxing. Lots of wildlife to observe. Children's playparks are very well designed and fun. The community garden is a brilliant addition and great for teaching kids about flowers and plants
S. N.
Lovely open space to walk around. Great for adults and children. Great views from the Park. Definitely worth the visit. Cafe on site too.
A. H.
Wharton Park is a great place to visit and has wonderful views of Durham Cathedral and Castle. The park is very well kept and the cafe is worth a visit, good selection of food. Car parking is available but there is a charge to park..could be pricey if you wanted to spend time having a look around.
l.
Very nice park amazing views has playgrounds too and a very nice basketball court
J. M.
Love this place lots to do for old and young alike.
D. H.
Excellent park with amazing views of Durham Cathedral and Castle, nice cafe, outdoor gym, trim trail, and two play areas for younger and older children, including electric cars on summer holiday periods, gardens and regular organised activities such as theatre, music, and children's activities.
S. J.
A bit chilly on top of the hill but the playground is great for toddlers and the cafe does a decent flapjack.
a. m.
Pleasant little park with a nice cafe and stunning view over the city.
G. O.
Great view of the entire Durham city centre.
O.
Visited it for the 1st time. Good for the families
R. H.
Pleasant, peaceful refuge, especially following the recent redevelopment. Several different spaces within it to suit different tastes. Climbing/activity areas for young children, plenty of benches and 'garden' areas for the crusties. Lovely views of the cathedral, castle & viaduct too. Steep embankments to all sides, mind. Wheelchair/buggy-friendly and a little cafe for a snacky lunch. No major complaints.
L. S.
A lovely park near the centre of Durham. Play areas for both young and older children, beautiful views of the city and a lovely cafe right at the top. A perfect place to go on a nice day.
A. M.
A little too hilly, but great for relaxing.
Staff do a great job on the gardens
V. R.
Very nice family friendly park. Have a few lovely outdoors activities for kids of all ages. The cafe on site is also nice and the friendly. Would recommend it as a place to take the kids out on those warm days.
M. B.
Really nice park but the separate levels and playparks make it hard to look after children of different age ranges. The lower level park is not suitable for age 3 and below. Ice-cream van needs located inside the park rather than across in the car park. Not a great idea having kids run across a car park to get a ice-cream.
n. g.
Not as good as it used to be. Great views over the cathedral and paring is currently free as the council haven't fixed the parking ticket machine for 3 months. Nice little play area, cafe and walks
t. m.
A lovely well kept park with fantastic views of the city
S. W.
Lovely park with three distinct play areas for children. Equipment for younger ones is opposite the cafe which was closed. Beside this there’s an assault course and then lower down the hill toward north road there’s a zip wire and some climbing equipment and a danced in pitch for ball games.
It could really do with the drainage being improved on the field at the top where the art is to view the cathedral, alongside the fitness gear and assault course. It was sodden and very muddy underfoot.
S. P.
Very well kept park with dedicated playground areas for children of differing ages. Area for ball sports is popular with students and families alike. There is a pretty amphitheatre too. Very nice break away from the city hustle and bustle.
M. M.
Took my daughter and she loved it, plus the view is quality 👌
C. H.
Lots of different areas for the kids to enjoy. Good value go carts at £1 per go and a mini golf course which is free and a good cafe. The only downside for me is the amount of steps you have to tackle as there are different levels.
S. H.
I've visited this park a number of times. Great parking and facilities. The highlight has to be the stunning view from the battlements over the City of Durham and the iconic Cathedral.
P. C.
Had passed alot of times and thought it was a housing estate.however we decided to drive up and see it. What a surprise a hidden gem we never knew was there.will definitely be taking our grandson very soon
a. j.
The best park to relax and breath fresh air. Picturesque view of the 1000 year old Cathedral from the summit.
T. H.
Easy access to Durham station for train spotting!!
A. C.
great park. great for the kids. cafe and cafe toilets spotless. love the kids growing allotment area. you can also get some plants here with donations. lovely to have a walk around
A. L.
A very nice area to walk around, with a stunning view of Durham.
A. S.
Lovely park on edge of Durham. It has outdoor gym equipment, playgrounds for little kids and a separate one for older kids. There's also a cafe, five a side court and mini golf.
L. M.
Lovely playground with lots of green spaces. Cafe at the top, basketball/5-a-side football, and an outdoor gym. Has parking too.
B. T.
Went here for the Durham brass festival, and it's great to see them use the park for an event like that. It now has good amenities including a cafe and toilets. It also offers wonderful views of the city andis accessible via the train station. You have to pay to park.
P. P.
It's a great place to visit with family or friends, to have picnics, a stroll or a quick lunchtime break for a place out of the office. Just around the corner of the bus and train stations, don't expect a big park, the unique design of the hilly park gives a lovely view of the city.
J. W.
Passed this little park , hundreds of times, so checked it out, the views of Durham cathedral and viaduct are fantastic. Lovely little cafe on top, this park may be small but its got bags of history.....
C. B.
Great place to take young children, toilets and cafe on site too and plenty to keep them occupied.
M. C.
Beautiful clean safe park. Gardeners are so friendly and do a brilliant job
F. T.
Couple of fun things to do for kids. Playground wasn't that big.
D. D. (.
The view of the cathedral is probably the best part of the park.
J. R.
Fantastic views from the battery especially if you are a train buff, also nice little cafe
P. W.
Lovely little park just outside city centre. Kids play parks, basketball hoops, ride on karts and loads of grassed play areas. Good views of the cathedral too.
D. T.
Great Park lots to see and do, excellent child play area, exercise machines, cafe, sports courts, mini carts, excellent viewing points over Durham City( great views ). Plenty of seating areas and picnic tables.
J. E.
Great park, lots of spots for sport and a range of playgrounds for kids. I would recommend checking the weather before you go because the only shelter is the café.
S. D.
Lively! Even in January, people of all ages enjoying playgrounds, ballgames, paths, sculptures, benches, views over the city, trees - and soon there will be flowers.
N. P.
I love Wharton Park and even though I don't live in Durham, I have arranged to meet up with people there several times: it is so unique and beautiful, you can walk around, lounge around, do activities with the children, there are great views as it is built on a hill... There are toilets too, which is always handy, and the café has mean cheese scones!
k. h.
Wow, first time here, came to see Durham brass, seems alot of things to do here so will be going back in a couple of days with the grandkids
E. G.
This park is not big, but great for picnic or family fun. You can find here few playgrounds with different ideas behind them, e.g. work out.
C.
Lovely big space in the heart of the city. 3 play areas for children of all ages and an outdoor gym and cafe. Not publicised enough 5 year in Durham and never knew it was even there.
M. D. C.
It's a nice place to bring your family at your spare time. You can spend a day for a picnic with gorgeous view of Durham Cathedral and Durham Railway station and the bridge, play with your kids at playing park, and make yourself understand the history of Durham Battery.
S. l.
Lovely park to visit, great views over city and areas to explore. Lovely Caffè and great for kids.
A. T. H. N.
This park is very interesting and it has a lot of information about the park and why it was there and also why it was named William Lloyd Wharton. You can also watch the trains going Northbound and Southbound from Durham Station. This park is abit hilly and steep for wheelchair users, pushchair users and old people.
G. R.
Nice park. Unless you travel by car it’s not accessible other than lots of steps
J. P.
Set out very well , has an outdoor gym and many swings etc for the children. The cafe is very nice, with spotless toilets .
Great views of Durham City.
A. S.
Nice place with lots of different areas and places to walk around - You need to pay for parking though!
J. L.
It's a nice little walk but it honestly feels lackluster. The outside gym lacks anything useful ie pull up bars and dip bars just useless machines that are good for people 65+ the little park down the way is just that little and kinda meh. It has such huge potential but hasn't been realised imo.
G. G.
Lovely park for a picnic and plenty of activities- good, clean facilities too.
C. “. K. M.
Great fun but not much shelter! Great view mind.
M. R.
Seems like a hidden gem compared to somewhere like Chester-le-Street park, very few people there when we went and the grounds are immaculate
S. H.
Very nice walk around and views of Durham. Will be nice on anice sunny day. But a nice way to get some exercise can grab a coffee too.

Excellent well kept beautiful park with three separate play areas a Castle and loads of other stuff for kids absolutely fantastic only criticism is the muddiness around the outside exercise area.
