Reviews of Naval College Gardens
E. O.
I still don't understand why this place is so UNKNOWN for most people coming to the UK. This is the Great Britain's Sistine Chapel and it was empty. I believe most tourists don't have a clue about its existence. That's a shame. This place is marvelous. It's huge. And above all, it is a true masterpiece. Besides, the audio guide allows you to fully understand the meaning of it and all the hidden messages in it. I loved it!!!
M. M.
Beautiful gardens set on this significant historical site of the Old Royal Naval College. Set upon the river, the grounds are vast with plenty of green lawns and beautiful paths. Scenic views of the Old Royal Naval College buildings which are part of the local heritage.
Very relaxing and scenic
D. L.
The Royal Naval college / Greenwich University Campus has fantastic historic buildings and grounds which are also used to hold concerts and during a number of movie sets.
The painted hall is such a beautiful and magnificent building and definitely worth a visit, you can spend a long time looking up at the ceiling at the intricate paintings.
Tours of the venue are also available and may include the old wooden bowling alley!
A. G.
Historic Greenwich. Do the London Walks tour of this area. Leaves from tower hill tube and takes the river cruise there.
C. M.
Gorgeous university campus and buildings with a lovely view of the London skyline by the river 🌆⛼. The view is perfection. I love this part of London, it feels completely separated from the rest of the city and has a small town feel. Great to walk around and explore on a sunny day as it has so much history.
F. N.
Nice place to walk- even better to visit the Painted Hall, especially now when you can get close to the ceiling and have a good look. Tours cost £10 but are very well worth the visit.
J. B.
We were here at Mile 6 of the London Marathon 2018.
For 37 years my family have helped 'run' the water station outside Greenwich baths.
This was our last time.

Love the Naval College been going to events here all my life and have NEVER been disappointed. Amazing surroundings. The perfect place to spend a summer evening
G. B.
It was very beautiful and atmospheric, It looked and felt very old like you could feel the age and history of the building.
M. H.
Great to see the wonders of the ceiling painting you have to book as not open to the public very often but well worth it
B. A.
Have visited many times over the years, l love being immersed in our English heritage..... The Chapel and Painted Hall date from Wrenn's days, the Painted Hall is being restored at present, visits conducted by an excellent guide are available until September 2018. It will close for the winter to reopen in 2019.......
K. F.
Went with my wife to the Il Divo concert venue was tremendous will be coming to have a better look so much history in one place
K. A.
Just a nice place. .. plenty of history and museums
S. N.
A UNESCO Heritage site and former royal palace, pensioners hospital, naval college and now university site. Glorious view of the Thames and Greenwich Park with Queens House and Observatory. You can visit the chapel (used in four weddings and a funeral) and The painted hall - where the body of Admiral Nelson lay in state and used for numerous films from Cary Grant to Les Miserables. I was lucky enough to be born next to the site and it commands a special place in my heart.
A. E.
A nice place to walk around in any weather or sit on a bench and watch the people that walk buy. Lots of beautiful buildings and greenary which you can sit down and have a picnic
C. L.
Amazing!
We took an evening stroll around the impressive and imposing Naval College.
The lights added to the atmosphere and created beautiful affects .......
A. C.
A wonderful open space with some amazing 18th century buildings around it. Plus if the weather is not good there's always the undercroft!
S. B.
Mind blowing.. great architecture.. very photogenic.
J. D.
So much history. Pretty place to walk around
S. B.
Worth a visit. Away from most of the tourist crowd which makes it a bit more palatable if you don't like crowds

Historic spot in one of the best - and most visited - parts of London
D. R.
Glorious gardens, a real treat on the bank if the Thames

Excellent place. By the river. Very historic. Various interesting buildings to visit.
B. B.
What a fantastic place to see night or day
A. J.
Well the place has been used numerous times for shooting film scenes. The gardens are well maintained and a nice view of Thames makes it a must visit destination during sunset.. You won't be disappointed.
M. H. R.
Amazing place to be. Specially in the summer.
D. S.
Great place at all times but special fun when film crews are in( often when university students on holidays).this one was a Sherlock Holmes and I guess next movie as too big a budget set for the TV. whole area made up as Victorian London street scene, dusty roads, gaslights, costumed extras, vintage horse carriages, all very cool. Didn't get to meet any stars this time! Pay a visit, you won't be disappointed, place oozes history.
H. C.
Great place lovely buildings .painted ceilings are fantastic .
Nice place to have a meal by river .
M. T.
Very serene and quiet place
J. A.
Mostly free to visit. Fantastic architecture. Parking is available close by. Great views of the Thames. Living history. Great museum on the site too. Waited 20 minutes at the Brewery pub but no one came to serve us. Had to walk into nearby Greenwich for lunch instead, hence 4 not 5 stars.
A. D.
Beautiful place full of history.
T. V.
This place was mind blowing. Lived in London all my life and never knew this place even existed until a friend of mine wanted to go here.
Seen places like this in other countries, but never knew there was this right on my doorstep. Quite literally the Sistine chapel of the UK.
Definitely worth the tour as the guides will point out a load of little quirks you'd otherwise miss.
J. A.
If you havent been to see the painted ceiling its a must. Great guides, great tour.
J. H. U.
It's not just a park.
In the buildings around it are all sorts of wonderful things. And not just for tourists. There are probably just as many locals going back for the umpteenth time.
The café at the back of the naval museum facing Greenwich Park is excellent. Good place to rest your feet if nothing else.
G. D. (.
Great walk through the gardens to see some magnificent artitiecture. It is also a place that was featured in the Thor film. Well maintained and pristine lawns makes it an ideal spot in the summer months. It also contains the area for Meantime bar and restaurant.
S. K.
Beautiful historic building, the Painted Hall is a great to see, it's the Sistine chapel of London and just as impressive. The grounds around are beautiful great for a picnic if you're a local or lots of choice of food places if you're a tourist. Local to everything in the centre of Greenwich.
M. R.
all Greenwich parks are absolutely wonderful and something that any tourist should visit. But not only obviously. I've already visited them million of times and I'm looking forward to getting there again.
This area of naval college has got a very special atmosphere because mix the garden park with the history of the buildings and gallery around. Coming from the Thames path you'll enter in the middle of the garden between the buildings. And just here you can feel you are in a very special place. The gallery is beautiful. And even the chapel is a must. I love this place!
L. A.
Lovely place to go, particularly on a sunny/clear day to see over to Canary Wharf. Beautiful building and nearby parks. You might even get lucky and see some filming - the Naval College is a popular location (e.g. it was a location for Les Miserables)
D. k.
Simply a gem in my local area, a wonderful vast green space on the waters edge. Beautiful architecture and lines of tall trees. Lovely view of Greenwich Park and Nice to see people leaning against trees noses in books. A very Boho place is Greenwich, you can easily spend a day here!
f. r.
Beautiful evening, brilliant light show. Definitely be going back to the Naval college Garden.
Z. L.
Exceptionally beautiful! Especially at night.
J. C.
A beautiful spot on a sunny day and the painted ceiling tour is fantastic whatever the weather. A perfect starting point for a walk around the village and markets. Lots of food stalls in the markets on a Sunday when you get peckish or zizzi has great views over the river.
I. K.
If You want the royal view to the river, visit this place! The space around is soooo spacious, so big! I just loved it! There's also a museum inside, where U can see paintings and ceiling frescas of Michelangelo.
G. M.
This area is well worth a visit. Go by the Thames Clipper to Greenwich (don't forget..sit on the back) and then walk through the college and its grounds to the National Maritime museum and then on to Greenwich Observatory. Plenty of (pricey) refreshments, but you could take your own picknic. There is so much to do, you'll need a day. Beautiful historic buildings and parkland. Fantastic views from the top of the hill.
Lots of free stuff, though the observatory will set you back a few quid.
Nice weather essential.
C. T.
A must go to place for a day out learn about our seafaring past in the museums walk round the lovely parkland that this place is set in.
Climb the steep hill and look at
the views from the top and take a picnic in Greenwich park.
L.
Lovely area to stop and have lunch. Beautiful old buildings with places to sit. Nice scenery and you have the cutty sark boat to visit. Would recommend if you like old architecture. Also have the museum round the corner.

Historical place and wonderful
K. H.
45 minute tour giving the history was very good. The Painted Hall is definitely the highlight, this is a separate guide but suggest you use the audio guide for this.
S. G. M.
The Naval College Gardens are a real hidden gem, they epitomize the calm grandeur and noble simplicity the characterizes Greenwich. The architecture has a quality all its own but the gardens provide a relaxed atmosphere to sit and read, think or contemplate, Plenty of others things to see and do in the local area.
P. U.
Lovely for a walk round in the sunshine. Short walk away from the heart of Greenwich and all the attractions. Cutty Sark, Naval College and the Observatory all well worth a visit. Lots of cafes, bars and restaurants nearby.

I think it's to do with the Pirate in me.
I always want to spend a night in the ship.
What a party it would be.
S. C.
A beautiful and historic place. We took our small grandchildren and they had a wonderful time.
D. n.
Designed by Wren, the majestic Naval College is a masterpiece of architecture. The power and status of these buildings have led to them being used for many Hollywood films, including recently Les Miserables. When Pirates of the Carribean was filming here, Jonny Depp paid a surprise visit to a local primary school; a pupil had written asking to meet Jack Sparrow! His dream came true.
The gardens are surprisingly mellow and relaxed. There's a sense of history, time and reality which seems to give the effect of being in a time warp, suspended in between two worlds, which is meditative and calming. There's also the youthful energy during term time brought by the large student body for whom these buildings are their University lecture rooms.
Explore Greenwich. It's a special place.
B. B.
Beautiful and historic place. The perfect backdrop for an open air concert. An experience you must try!
o. “. o.
I loved the summer sitting there studying unfortunately it gets ruined by tourist who either doesn't realise it's an active college with students or they just don't care.
D. V.

J. T.
History all about you in this lovely place to relax and marvel at the beautiful buildings.plenty of green areas to picnic . Watch out for the red ants in summer !
W. G.
