Reviews of Southampton Common
T. A.
I never knew such a great park existed just behind me here. I went with my family and friends for a Easter picnic and had a swell time playing football with the wives and soaking in the sun while having great meals we had prepared from home. Felt like I was back in my home country. Though I didn’t get to explore the whole park. I heard there’s a lot of sight for the eyes at the common and how big it is. We hope to visit there again.
K. B.
A great place in the city for a walk, a run, cycling and bringing the dogs out.
Large open fields and lots of trees as well as lakes too.
A large playground and a nearby pub, The Cowherd’s. Parking via Cemetery Rd.
Easy access for all.
An essential part of the great outdoors during the last few months of the pandemic and beyond.
V. T.
Very nice and calm park. There is a lot spaces where you can play, sit or just walk around.
Clean and bright.
I. A.
excellent place
a lot of space for relaxation, games, for children
perfect place for a run. so de, however, as for a barbecue.
I really like to go with my daughter to the lake with ducks 🌞
J. T.
Nice playground with white sand everywhere. Water attractions doesn't work, but kids still are happy to play with all parts of water area. Cafe on site with drinks and some snacks works till 5pm or so. Toilets available till 6pm. There is also a free water machine to fill your water bottles. All playground is surrounded by fence. :) also lots of space around for picnics/football/occasional payed attractions/lakes with birds to feed/forests and lots of jogging track.
P. L.
The Park is very nice as long as you are not afraid of dogs.
The playground is amazing and my son loves it. We can't wait for summer to start using the water pumps.
K. J.
The Southampton Common is probably the best park area in the UK.
There’s divers facilities and activities, a truly excellent children’s play area, an exercise zone, duck ponds, model boat pond, wildlife pond, the Cowherds pub, a church with ancient graveyard inc titanic graves, cycle paths, miles of footpaths, large wooded areas throughout and so much more.
It also hosts various events too. And all I needed was somewhere to sunbathe 😂.
I. G.
Beautiful lake and greenery! Lots of open space to meet with friends and has graffiti art at the Avenue Subway
S. G.
I just went for a walk in the park... But when we reached the park there was a fun theme park set up for the bank holiday weekend... Made my simple walk really great! The number of benches can be increased.. but I understand it all totally depends on the funding! And some sunshades could be good for both sun and rain!
T. R.
An incredible place to dwell into. Well maintained grounds with numerous benches to sit and relax. The soothing calmness from the lush green spaces made my morning incredibly beautiful!
P. G.
Southampton Commons has got everything needed for a day outing (with or without kids). Good walking and cycling paths, a couple of beautiful ponds, playground for children, fresh water taps in the playground, a couple of nice cafes (one in the playground), push up bars for people wanting to get some exercise, barbecue areas and lot of benches to relax. It has got multiple entrances and ample of car parking. The Cowherds pub is just near the playground and has got good food choices as well. Parkrun happens in Commons every Saturday at 9am, but may be not running now due to Covid.
A. ‘. J.
Was pleasantly surprised visiting this park, so many different areas to explore. Very well designed, something for everyone and activities for the younger generation. Excellent inner area for dog walking and escaping city life.
T. G.
Nice little common that got taken over by dom whiting with drum and bass on a bike
v. m.
Southampton common is a great creature by local city council. People enjoy walking, cycling, picnic etc..it has kids recreational activities as well. Best thing you can enter in common park from any direction u coming from. It’s huge green area in map where one can find fresh air & sunny raise in sunny weather.
A. W.
Lovely play park with walks in woods if wanted. Free parking for up to 6 hours. Refreshment cafe with a toilet/nappy changing and restaurant there too.
Wide paths for bikes and pedestrians.
S. P.
Surprising lovely (and huge) public park. The Ornamental Lake is often transcendent.
T. T. E.
Absolutely great place too visit if you want a free fun family day out, suitable for all ages also pets.
This park is what every town/city needs, definitely taking the children back asap
m. s.
We love the Common. There's so much room to just wander and enjoy the open spaces. There's even a guy selling cakes and drinks at the Bellemore pub entrance. I wish the car park was bigger because parking on the road is a problem.
m. b.
Good wide open spaces, places for bbq...normally a ice-cream van, (god I'm missing that at the moment!) good places for a jog, or run!... And there's a pub just down the road for a really good meal and pint!! Very nice trip out! And a lovely retro milkman van that can make coffee and teas etc for you! Very nice too!! 5*
r. m.
Lovely, beautiful, calm natural environment , green grass, tall magnificent trees, blue sky with patches of white clouds.
Sounds of the music of the singing birds , whispering of the winds, murmuring of the leaves ,
All this boosted my bio chemistry.
Every day,I love to go for a walk there to refresh my body and soul.

We were here for the fun fare. Very good time for the little ones and lovely weather for it too!
The grounds itself are big and well maintained
S. R.
Some great memories here, nice vibe on a warm summer day.
R. J.
Really nice place although parking was quite small for the size of the place. The park in the middle was lovely. A shame the public hadn't learnt how to use bins and we throwing rubbish in the woods in route 😔
N. R.
The playground has loads of great stuff for up to teens and used to be good but is very tired and things broken or missing now which is a real shame. Some things working enough to make it a good place for children to go.
J. S.
Lovely walk around the common. Seemed very clean, no rubbish anywhere. My grandson loved feeding the ducks 😋
M. A.
Lovely place, plenty for children to do, very clean public park, nice little pub on the corner of the park. Ideal place for young toddlers to use up there energy.
G. C.
Great place to visit and relax and watch birds on the pond.
S. T.
This is a great place to go for people of all ages. Play park for kids, big open areas for sport, picnics and walk. Clean and tidy and a cafe on site.
A. S.
Very nice city park, quiet large. You can walk, cycle, run, sleep, eat, whatever you like. Lakes and ponds with ducks and other birds. You can find some very quiet areas for chill out. Very well recommended, enjoy the park
L. J.
Beautiful parks and facilities. Great playground, lakes, pool and so much more.
S. B.
Nice place to spend some time with your family for a picnic or to just go for a walk. The cemetery has so much history and is definitely worth taking a walk through.
d. p.
Great place to enjoy a day out. Plenty of space to relax and enjoy a picnic and grab an ice cream or to enjoy a nice relaxing walk
J.
Amazing views , the park is huge and the scenery is lovely , we enjoy our morning walk , enjoyed seeing the geese, ducks, birds, absolutely beautiful
N. H.
Ok if you are starved of space and greenery, for a quick fix. Could kind of do with a tea shop or ..something. if you don't have kids, and dont fancy the pub, it's either packed or a bit of a wasteland.
K. M.
Lovely outdoor space for dog walking, great park for the kids but could not find any public toilets.
K. L.
Great place to walk the dog or take the kids too. Lots of features and history to this large outdoor area.
S. K.
Lovely place to go my hometown went to see my family with my family the common is so big they have pubs ice cream little eating area great place to visit
J. B.
I visited cemetery lake on a very cold frosty morning. Half of the lake was covered in ice. I went there too take photographs of birds. I was there early so I could park for free near the cemetery. Seeing the cemetery covered in frost was even more thought provoking than usual. I watched 3 Great Spotted Woodpeckers chase each other around the tree tops.
I took a few photos at the lake as I watched ducks breaking through the ice and diving under the icy cold water. While I stood shivering, waiting for the action shot of the day.
R. B.
A great place to go for a walk, run or bike ride all year round. Well maintained and loads of different areas to explore. There is free parking from multiple access points and an organised Parkrun every Saturday morning as well as concerts and other events throughout the year.
I. F.
Great bit of open space at the top of the city.
A huge green space, kids play area, boating lake wildlife pond, small cafe and two pubs at each end. Cowherds at the bottom and Bellemoor at the top.
You can also do Park Run every Saturday and can sometimes find a fun fair.
The common easy to get to by foot car and bus. About 20 minutes walk from the city centre and at the time of this review Uni-link U1, U2 and Bluestar 1.
A nice to walk around all year round
M. H.
A nice and kids friendly play area recently refurbished. Common also has a good walk trail through the nature and surrounding woodland. The parking is available on Cemetery road. Weekends it’s free but weekdays have pay and display option. We visit time to time. There are some fair takes place at different times of year. Very close to M3 Junction 14 it’s a nice place to visit and enjoy some quality time.
I. G.
Nice place to chill especially in the nice weather. Just be wary of the paths as they can get confusing and can be pitch black at night as there isn't any lighting.
C. M.
This is definitely my favourite Park of all I've ever seen since now: it's huge, full of very tall and old trees, it has three lakes inside, where you can see many ducks or swans! Everywhere you'll hear birds singing 🐦 and the wind blowing, and you'll feel far from the city center!
I just love walking in the forest, seeing squirells anywhere and happy people running or walking with their dogs!
If you like nature and having picnic s near some little lakes, that's the place for you!
After 3pm the car park is free!
T. B.
A good place to spend time,
Running, cycling, picnic, walk the dogs, date, play ground for children and calisthenics workout 💪
T. M.
This place is great for a stroll or a run or to walk your dog.
If you are feeling a bile ride. It is a great space of land to be able to enjoy from Southampton City Council.
Thats why it has got give stars from me.
They have a park and lots of activities to keep the children entertained.
M. M.
A huge park, excellent for a walk and leisure. The park has got a playground, walking paths, lakes and nice views. Perfect place for a sunny weekend. Bear in mind that when it's a good weather during days off, there might be no parking space!
There's a very wide open space, so many people come here with their dogs. Sometimes a temporary amusement park comes and is open for a week or so.
My favourite part is the cemetery area, because it's very old and beautiful trees grow there.
R. V. b. D.
This place is great for all ages including dogs, been coming here since I was a kid I now bring my own kids up here & spend hours here. The old cemetery is a very interesting place to visit, it has a lot of graves from the titanic amongst other interesting bits of history if you like them sort of things. The new park is brilliant for kids up to about 10 years old, there's a small kiosk selling light refreshments with a wheelchair accessible toilet behind. The cowherds pub is near here serving great food & drinks, its a little expensive but worth it. The hawthorn centre is a great place to visit. Did you know there used to be a zoo here!? Also in ww2 the common was used by the British army.
N. D.
Great outdoor space with a great park, ducks to feed and plenty of distance to walk or ride your bike
S. L.
A great place to go for a family walk. The playground has plenty for kids to do.
H. B.
Amazing centre of the city! Beautifully kept and the ponds and lakes are very pretty, I recommend feeding the ducks
k. f.
One of the best urban parks I've ever been to.
It's very spacious with a good balance between open lawns and areas with tall trees.
There are many footpaths for strollers and joggers. There are also cycling lanes that cut through different parts of the park.
The three little ponds are some of the most beautiful places in the park.
The graffiti at the tunnel inside the park is colorful and creative. It serves as a reminder that Southampton Common is not exactly the countryside, though it looks very much like it. There are some human “footprints” inside this urban park after all.
K. V.
Really nice place and the park is good, but it could do with some shade.
M. D.
A great place to take the family. Amazing play area for all ages!!.
D. M.
Southampton Common is a fantastic and relaxing park in the middle of the city. Playground for children, small artificial lakes with swans and ducks, and many paths to enjoy the nature all around. Parking is available in cemetery road and is free for max 4 hours or pay at machine for longer.
A. A.
I really like the place. Green and quiet. I'll take some photos next time.
W. M. F. H.
Such a lovely place for the whole family, lots to see and do. We had a great time supporting Southampton Face for life.
Y. Z.
Large, green, and peaceful. One of my favourite public spaces in the city. Always nice to take a walk.
G. C.
Just nice and enjoyable.
D. B.
A great space but it is starting to feel a bit tired. Not all the equipment is working. Kids still love it and it's a good safe space
E. H.
Nice open spaces and little ponds, good atmosphere, especially in the summer. However be aware of the homeless sleeping in the heavily wooded areas.
R. Q.
Lovely park for a picnic, games with family or a dog walk. I often walk my dog here and there are both wide spaces where he can be let off the lead and more quiet tracks with very few other people around. No toilets or tap water.
J.
Great park, big area for bike riding, dog walking, duck and swan feeding and a great play park for the kids to play in, with water fountains and a food and drinks place.
C. H.
Can use abit of TLC and more lights for the evening time but still a lovely place
K. “. W.
Great place for families with large play area. Good for picnics. Fantastic for runners at all times with regular fun and charity runs. Also perfect for relaxing, dog walking and nature watching.
D. C.
Sat in the sun and listen to the FA Cup final. Lovely big park in a great location. Well done Liverpool.
R. Z.
Love the trees and walking there, however some strange feeling there keep me wondering why it’s quite a sad park in terms of energy? But in general very lovely
G. M.
Great large area with good walk / cycle ways and an excellent playground for kids of all ages. Shame all the water features dont appear to work anymore though...
p. o.
Great for walking cats, however, my cat loafs a lot because there are a lot of people. can't i walk my cat in peace? if she wants to fight mutant rats she should be able to do so without disruptions. It is also good for climbing trees and fearing for your death trying to climb down.
M. L.
Amazing kids park. With a food shack and toilet. Free parking. Would definitely recommend
S. A.
Fresh Air, warm sun ☀️, great for walking 🏃.
b. R.
Thank god for this piece of green land in our city. Take a walk through the old cemetery, sit by the lake or enjoy the duck pond. Nature in the city.
K. P.
Needs a modern outdoor pool built here again but a state of art one as it's in a good popular spot that gets very busy with all age groups x
L. S.

Specially kids can enjoy this place.
S. I.
Great place. Pounds, kids playground, picnic areas, great for walk, sport, meditation!!!!!
S. W.
Nice area for a walk and has a large children's play area.
C. P.
I do enjoy walking through the common but the dog owners should be more responsive about picking up the dog poo.
J.
Great day out at the funfair down Southampton Common.
J. B.
A lovely open space, I never feel comfortable leaving my vehicle in the car park though
О. В.
Beautiful park with WiFi and lots of place for the children and dogs to play
J. W.
It's good, beautiful place to visit and have picnic with friends and family. However I would totally add some more lights even only the solar powered ones to make u feel extra safe at night and also a public toilet would be nice 😃😜
A. G.
Lovely park,so much for kids to do when the weather is lovely.
A. B.
The most peaceful place in Southampton when it's not too crowded.
G. T.
Great park. Shame the water features are not working. Apparently they have not works for a long time. Must have cost them a fortune, they are very good quality
J. C.

A fantastic park, which is the epitome of verdant.
Absolutely loved the monkey bars and the pond with the ducks.
The old, historic cemetery was impressive, too.

z. m.
A vast park composed of ponds, dog walk paths, ever green grass park where one can do bbq, commons Festival is held on the same space, playgrounds for children. Lovely site for bird watchers and a pond for fishing. Good family park
C. N.
Biggest parksite recreational area in town
D. R.
First visit in a very long time. Children's park area is lovely, granddaughter loved it, but shaded seating is desperately needed. Most areas to sit were in full sun. Not enough benches in the rest of the park, so hoping more are planned for those of us who need to sit for a rest during a long walk!! Weather very hot so will come back again for more exploring on a cooler day.
T. A.
Very nice
M. N.
Good for a walk, not too many people and very attractive. Pretty diverse lakes and places to sit should you wish to.
G. M.
Lovely beauty spot with lots of paths and wooded areas to explore.
M. M.
Very clean and loads of open space for dog to run around. Absolutely gorgeous scenery
E. l.
I often come here for a walk to take photos as there is a lot of wildlife - especially flowers and birds. There are lakes, wooded areas and open fields. A church and old graveyards are located at one end. Perfect place for dog walkers. However, I would avoid the area after dark.
R. H. (.
Best place for walking in the city. Endless number of small paths through the woods, lots of wide paved paths for walking, biking. Open fields for playing, picnics. Playground for the kiddies. Beautiful trees, blackberry picking in season. Please don't feed bread to the ducks.
S. J.
A beautiful wooded space in the heart of Southampton, lovely lakes and walks. It would take an hour to walk round.
S. F.
Opted for a starter before the mains instead of dessert after and today it was a wise choice, even though the desserts looked really nice
홍.
Southampton's core place with wide grassland, playground, ponds and life communities
A. F. G. L.
So much fun for both Kids and teenagers. Also hot food available nearby
d. c.
Free day out!! Playpark for the kids, great for dog walks, picnics etc

Great green space in the middle of the city. Happily unchanged for over 60 years.
M. R.
Another fab place to visit
A. C.
A nice place to escape to, especially given its location relative to the University
C. P.
Great variety of nature - woodland, grassland, wild flower areas, wildlife ponds, ornamental lake, old cemetery - all accessible and free to visit.

Great open space, good for running, walking, cycling and dog walking. There is a play area for the children and a pub restaurant on the edge of the common. You can access it from a number of entrances, there is parking but Sundays are free. It also holds live events.
J. B.
Our local green space. Well maintained with a variety of walking and cycling routes. Three lakes, a children's playground, a cafe and The Cowheards pub. A lifesaver over the past year.
H. A. L.
A large green park, good for exercise and activity. Pretty views too
R. T. (. W.
A substantial open space at the North of Southampton, used for various events every year. Every time I visit, certain areas seem to be "recovering" whilst others are clearly "neglected". The area is not what it could be, but it is still a good place to go for a walk and some (relatively) fresh air.
S. H.
Great play Park pull up bars section and loads to explore. The funfair is setting up for the weekend. Opens Thurs 25th Aug for Bank Holiday weekend. Also Ice cream van for those hot days x
L. K.
1st visit under new ownership & didn't disappoint quiet at lunchtime but still great atmosphere. Food delicious, must try the evening cocktails🍸!!!
S.
What an healthy city. The park run in common on saturday mornings is definitely an healthy winner for all. From toddlers in pushchair to 88 years old grannies...a great way to start your weekend!
N. M.
Great location for a picnic bbq or even just a walk . Nice play area for the kids and loads of space to run around
H. A.
Well maintained. Could do with replacing your bins though, ruins the look.
C. N.
Little place selling food had lots of options and we're very good
K. H.
Love the new sand Park in place of the old pool area. My two children loved it, very secure too with gates and fence area the whole area. Was very clean when we went (Monday in summer holidays)
S. P.
This is an excellent example of a large urban green space. It has great opportunities for relaxing, engaging in leisure activities and for generally exploring nature and wildlife habitats without having to travel out of the city limits itself.
E. J.
Lovely park. Starting to look a bit tired, needs a tidy up here and there. My kids, 8, 6 and 3 love this place. Also nice as you can scoot or ride around the common before or after
F. C.
Big open spaces, great playground
E. R.
Clean and well managed. We were able to see lots of wildlife- a heron,a duck and ducklings, fledgling coot, dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies. A lovely open space.

M. N.
A great open space for all the family for walking jogging cycling and taking in nature. The crematorium is very interesting place to walk through there is also a lovely children's play area to and the nice small lake with Swans and ducks smimming around . There is a lovely place called the Hawthornes where you can walk around and look at nature and wildlife there is also a big pond there to and a nice caffe there to all worth a visit when it opens again after lockdown. So do visit the common like i do most days walking the dog you won't be disappointed any time of the year
J. L.
Lovely green space in the middle of the city. Good for walking, playing, picnicking, wildlife. Lovely children's play area too with snack kiosk.
i. s.
Well loved large municipal park plenty of natural mature woodland large flat spaces used by picnickers and sports groups. Interesting ponds and avenues. Encourages you to get out and do some excercise or simply commune with nature
C. W.
It's a very nice place with a great playground for kids
P. A.
Beautiful open space within easy reach of the city centre
F. O.
Very large park with large open fields, forest areas, ponds, and many walking and cycling paths. A great place to go for a run, walk, picnic, cycle or play some sports with friends.
D. A.
Visited here whilst staying the night to go to poultons park and all I can say is this park is a must visit. Great credit to who ever maintains the park they do a amazing job. Kids absolutely loved the park area and there was also a fun fair at the park which was a added bonus. I recommend to visit here when in Southampton
O. A.
At home with nature best describes Southampton Common. I had a nice time watching the ducks play in the lake while I meditate. It was a therapeutic experience. It was also beautiful to see a lot of families, lovebirds and their pets having picnic in the open on a fine weathered day.
M. M.
Beautiful and quiet place, nature, silence and fresh air. Excellent for changing your mood
J. L.
Southampton is one of thee premier places that one must take time out of their schedule to relish in. A 300 acre green space that is home to 3 bodies of water in which you can admire & feed the ducks, not to mention the number of pathways which can keep you walking for hours on end!! It is a special place that the entire family can enjoy!!
M. T.
Huge public grounds for all to enjoy. Plenty of bins around which is unusual in comparison to peer counties such as Berkshire. Highly recommend but can be difficult to park on an extremely busy sunny day.
S. F.
A lovely space to exercise, picnic, spend time in nature or play sports. The only way it could be improved is by having public toilets – the lack of any means spending a full day out in the sun isn't possible unless you're at the Cowherds pub or the conservation cafe.
c. l.
Lovely common. Confusion over the parking. First four hours free but didn't know if you needed a ticket or not.
The grass area where we sat was clean and free of rubbish. Fairly quiet, you could hear the birds singing.
A. J. F. (.
Southampton Common. Sorry for this long comment.
lovely park with lots of trees. Very quiet and lively
Nice to walk or read a book. huge and just a right place in the middle of the city. Just gives the city that kind of calmness.
Suitable exercise and walk the dog.
I would give this park, 4 out of 5. Why 1 star is missing? it is because the lack of flowers. Would be much more beautiful if they grow up flowers across this beautiful park.
Whether you like walking, jogging or relaxing, this park is the right place for that. Birds are lovely there.
Relaxing, and removing tension. Southampton common.
You may walk across this park while looking for a bus stop. Sometimes you need to walk across rather than just walking around.
There is a playground. Fitness area and some very beautiful statues across.
I went there on Wednesday. Enjoyed the walking. As I mentioned earlier, it is really nice place to walk across. Whether you are family, couple, lovers or university students, you would love this park.
If you like my commend, please give me a thumbs up.
Thank you for reading my comment. And have a lovely day.

Great place to go for a picnic and walk. Lots to do there, multiple ponds, gym and play area and a large amount of land to discover with some great trails
M. K.
All very well maintained. Nice walks through the common and cemetery. Although people will insist on riding bikes where non are allowed. In the cemetery and on footpaths. Perhaps they can't read the signs🤔
A. D.
Fun
M.
Really nice place, lots of open space, very easy to social distance from people you're with and also other groups. Great for a nice summer's day as there are a few trees so you can get a bit of shade if need be
K. W.
Southampton Common is a great place to visit. For the kids there is a large play park situated not far from the Cowheards pub and has a toilet facility (albeit rather small and a little bit on the unpleasant side as public toilets usually are). There's lots of sand to play in as well as your usual swings and slide etc and is probably suitable for children up to about 9-10 by offering a little something for all ages. The common itself is a mix of large open spaces and patches of woodland which you can explore via the many flat pathways. It's easy terrain if you have a pushchair and is great for the kids if they want to ride their bikes (when it's not heaving with people which can sometimes happen on a nice day in the school holidays) . As an adult the common of course offers nice walks and a bit of a break from the surrounding city but is a great place to jog, excersise, walk the dog or just have a picnic and a glass of wine! There is also the added bonus of free parking for up to 4 hours (please check this for yourself) which makes it a very affordable afternoon out with the kids! There is not huge amounts of parking spaces so sometimes a bit of patience is needed on arrival if you are visiting on a sunny day at the weekend. From experience though you don't usually have to wait too long for a space to become avaliable.
J. P.
The common is always a wonderful place. Very clean and friendly atmosphere. Bucket fulls of space for your dogs and children, bike riding routes, forest inspired walks, open grasslands to play football, cricket etc. There is great play parks for the kids alongside a very friendly ice cream man. There is a few lakes to be walked around, some even allow fishing. There is a very old church and cemetery which is interesting to walk around. I would highly recommend a visit here as there is everything your going to need!!
A. K.
Very nice park for a walk or run.
s. s.
Great vast place to have a break or do some sports or just enjoy the sunshine on a summer day. Big playground for kids to enjoy as well as plenty of greenery and cycling paths. There is also a space with some excercise equipment. And if someone got hungry there is restaurant too.
D. P. S.
The kids play area is amazing with a lot of activity options but the lake side is not maintained and is not that great. Good to bring in kids but not so good for a picnic.
A. W.
Great park and lots of space.
J. P.
Lovely place to walk, pity about the people who still leave rubbish and dog mess. Also would like to see stop to barbecues all over the place better to have a designated area.
D. C.
I love it when it's not crowded
L. L.
Great greenspace in Southampton. Avoid at night. 4 hrs free parking around edges.
D. M.
Nice place to walk the dogs etc, lots of open space
N. M. (.
Pleasant walk with access to car parking
S. B.
Lovely park for exercise and mind relaxing activities.
C. C.
Beautiful location for a family day outside.
f. a.
Nice green space in Southampton. We'll used by walkers, joggers, cyclists and dog walkers. Nice fishing lake, bird lake and boating lake. Good children's park.
A. B.
Lovely play park and kids enjoyed it. However, there's no shade and ok extreme hot weather, it can be a horrible place to be.
S. N.
Lovely local amenity for recreation. A great shame that the security fencing around the paddling pool has been thrown into the pool by vandalism, and the council has done nothing about it.
S. s. W.
Great for dog walking and enjoying the great outdoors
J. ,.
A very beautiful park, you can actually forget you're in the middle of a city. Highly recocmmend it.
A. K.
Great for Walks, no matter what the weather 👌
G. B.
Nice place for the kids to play during the day but plenty of unsavoury people at night
M. G.
Huge park, there is new playground, unfortunately during the summer hot weather it's tough to enjoy the place. There is no shade at all.
D.
Tranquil area in the centre of the city. Makes me think of my college days.
L. P.
Love this place, revisited recently having moved away but spent all of my childhood playing here, walking dogs, running. Such a special place in a large city to get some green space and trees .
E. H.
Lovely place to walk the dogs
w.
Nice and clean park.
I. B.
Stopped for lunch, great park for dog walks, nice kids area as well
a. l.
Great outdoor space, children's play area with kiosk for food/drink. Toilets. Outdoor gym area, fishing lake, miles of smooth path for cycling etc.
S. D.
Went for the first time, with a 3yr old he loved it
B. K.
Fantastic day out with the boys a while back and good for memories lane where i put my dogs ashes (sorry) nothing better than a pint in the cowerds to get rid of the tears 😭
J. W.
Really nice place, big, lots of well kept and clean paths linking the various areas of the city surrounding it. A pleasure to walk through, lots of dog walkers, very friendly for dogs and cycling, although there are designated solid paths for walking only.
Don’t walk across the grassy parts when it’s been wet without wellies or proper boots... trust me, that’s the end of your trainers.
R. v.
Lovely family open space lots for children and adults to do. Parking was not difficult to find a cross the road. Easy way to get some air, exercise and enjoy the views.
A. S.
Definitely my favourite park in Southampton - great place for walks, running and meeting friends for picnic. There is fenced children's play area as well as an outside gym. A little lake where every year you can find baby ducklings. I only wish there were more benches and facilities like table tennis and picnic tables.
B. R.
A large common on the outskirts. Large play ground. Great pub, The Cowherds on the perimeter and cafe ,The Hawthorns . A huge area to play and run around.
B. C.
I'm so glad Southampton has this green space. Its plenty big enough for everyone who might want to use it on a sunny day and even has some interesting spots to discover. I've heard that questionable things go on here at night though, so beware.
P. C.
Nice park, shame the water wasn't working but must be because of it being winter,
I. x.
I love it bc I has all sort of swings slides and if it is raining or u want to Play hide n seek there are tunnels and u can jump of em, Also there Are Climing walls and there is even a kiosc so u can buy food and drinkz (Tea, Coffee, Sausage rolls, Fanta, Coke, Fruit shoots, etc) this is in the park, there a really good Grasses u can play tennis, Football, basketball all sorts, there is a brilliant duck pond u can feed the ducks u can walk on the logs, I would NOT suggest Holding them so yeah, it has a cemetery when u walk in a pecific way xx
P.
The common is a vast open space with added space by large ponds full of wildlife. There are activity areas for children and the open grass areas are maintained so ideal for picnics with wooded areas and an old cemetery to explore. There is a lake with ducks & swans children can view and feed. Plenty of space for everyone and to sit, read & relax
T. P.
Great place for dogs and their humans. Lots of open space and wooded areas also ponds ideal for the wildlife.
Ideal place for family picnics or bbqs. Just be aware this common is huge so recommend more than one visit.
t. g.
Lots of grass a good park pubs near by. Great for a bbq
a. j.
The best place for outdoor stuff ☺️
L. D.
Great open space to chill with friends, we'll maintained fields, and very clean public park.
E. H.
Nice place to walk and exercise towards the centre of Southampton. A dedicated play area for the younger ones, a reasonable Cafe, and plenty of open space. The duck pond is a little run down and the Rats maybe a little off putting in that area.
O. S.
Nice big popular place. There's even an ice cream van there. Nice paths and OK for wheelchair in many parts
P. A.
Excellent green location. Clean and suitable for family get-togethers. Good parking (free for 1st 4 hours). Highly recommended.
S. C.
A very quiet and relaxing place. You can enjoy the nature and get away from the stress of the city.
K. N.
A lovely green space, perfect to escape from the city-feel. Good for dog walking, running, sports etc. There's a small play area with swings and slides, and a couple of lakes with ducks, geese, and swans. The Cowherds pub on The Avenue (edge of the common) is a great place to have lunch.
S. H.
Massive park run on Saturday's. 9 am start, really lovely place to run.
I. S.
It's a large green space in Southampton. I've spent many hours here. I love it in all seasons, but especially the Autumn. Three ponds, woods, open areas, you can walk, talk and get beer and food at the Cowherds.
p. a.
Loads and loads of open green space a long with tree walks playground for kids saw people having picnics some just chilling out all round nice place huge.
S. M.
One of the nicest places for a walk in Southampton. Huge area for picnics, walking, cycling. There's a huge Fairground usually annually and often various events on.
D. S.
Nice big open space. Boating lake is good but quite deep. Large fishing lake. Water bird lake, can feed the animals (but not with bread). There are several paths in and around but be aware these are sometimes used by cyclists. Just one word of warning (as is for places like this) women should not be alone in the secluded parts of The Common.
E. Z.
We like the new playground where kids can have hours of play time. Park is big and lovely too
P. C.
Beautiful expanse of common and several pinds and lakes. Lots of wildlife and popular for picnics, joggers etc. Has a wonderful cafe. Hopefully will function again this summer.
K.
Great place to go for a family walk, family day out with a picnic, play football, play in kids park. So much you can do as a family without spending a lot of money, just need a good imagination and think of what you could do in your back garden that you could do in a place that is 100% bigger. Ideal for individuals, couples and families.
D. G.
Such varied walks around the common, with the main paths of tarmac. Places to picnic, duck pond, kiddies play area. There's free parking off road for up to 4 hrs. We'll worth a visit.
L. E.
The Common is a great place for anyone. Large open spaces for running, walking, picnics, games and walking dogs. Hawthorns wildlife centre and cafe at the Avenue end does great coffee and snacks and meals. There are wooded areas and playpark for children. Wonderful place.
H. G.
Great place for walk, barbecue and spend time with family.
I. V.
Beautiful park for walks, runs and bike rides in nature.
D. N. (. N.
Over 150 acres of parkland, woodland walks, a duck pond, and a massive lake. The whole area is clean, tidy and well tended. The common is well used by families, walkers, fitness fans, cyclists, dog walkers, picnic fans, sun bathers and more. Ths is the absolute highlight of Southampton and is deservedly popular with residents.
M. E.
Masses of open space with a mix of shady and sunny areas and some streams. Can get pizza and a lovely little cafe. Great for a dog walk. Well behaved dogs off lead. Some free parking at weekends off The Avenue.
g. C.
One of my favourite places to walk.
J. B.
The council have removed all on street parking in favour of a bike lane all the way down hill lane. This means the cars that want to park for the common clog up the surrounding residential streets. No doubt the council will see this an opportunity to enforce parking restrictions on these roads. Disappointed. The common was alright though once we parked
S. G.
Parkrun at Southampton Common - great morning out 😊
s. h.
Great place for a walk or cycle ride in a woodland setting, but in a city
C. B.
Lovey for a jog, the full external path is 5K. No easy access toilets, instead go to Hawthorn Centre, Cowherds Pub or kiosk at kids play area.
J. N.
Lovely place to have a walk or cycle. Nice for children too, good play area.
There is a large duck pond here but if you want to feed ducks, you need to my wild bird or duck food for them which is good.
Not too far from the town centre.
S. t.
Interesting place.... Turns out its a bit of a cruising spot. Got the shock of seeing naughty people doing filthy stuff to each other. Still I enjoyed watching
D. D.
Surprising woodlands for a park in a city. The nature reserve next to the cafe never seems to be open when I go.
G. W.
Want to the Cowherds pub and had a great lunch.
C. l.
Sand pit, climbing frame, zip wire plus more available. Great for older kids and little ones. Always busy is the only downside.
S. B.
Beautiful location. Spend many a saturday/Sunday morning walking around enjoying the grounds. Great for walkers, joggers, cyclists and family's with pushchairs. An easy way to keep the children entertained. Often events are also hold here - music, food fun inflatable charity events.
S. R.
A nice big green area to take dogs for walk and a great cut through
J. P.
A wonderful oasis just a few miles from the city centre. An extensive play area for children, with lakes for wildlife- a variety of ducks and swans. Parts of the common are so sheltered by trees, the only sounds are those made by birds twittering. Something for everyone.
D. M.
It's a nice walk with the family if you don't mind the high volume of runners and cyclists. There's a kids park that isn't worth going to in the winter due to the amount of sand and water they've put in the park but worth taking the kids for half an hour. There's also a duck / swan pond that's been taken over by seagulls and pigeons - if you don't mind all of that, it's actually a really nice walk in the winter.
j. s.
Great for a pooch walk and or with friends. Great open space in the city
S. R.
In my opinion, the Common is Southampton's best outdoor leisure asset. Great place to while away a sunny day with a picnic or go for a walk.
S. G.
There is so much variety here it is impossible to do it justice in one visit. We were there today with a family group of 15, ranging from 6month to 65½ years. Everyone found something to enjoy. It was a very easy place to be with children and still have bit of a walk or a coffee then let them roam free around the sandy play area full of accessible wooden structures and more tradition stuff like swings ans slides
V. C.
One of Southampton's big open spaces. Nice area, pubs on both sides, (on The Avenue & Hill lane). Lots always going on and has large pond and kids play area. Best its all free to visit. At its best on long summers day.
j. k.
Beautiful place with something for everyone. Great for walking, running, bike riding, relaxing. There is a duck pond and a fishing lake as well as the old boating lake which is now home to many ducks and swans. The common also has a newly built play area which some water features. There is a great cafe in the Hawthorn centre in which they sell food and drinks including delicious pizza. There is also a pub called the Cowherds which also sells food.
J. E.
Lovely walk. Several things to do . Feed the ducks , cemetery walk, parks, pubs Only negative is the little shop by the park. Man who works there is rude and extremely expensive. Also needs to take card payments ( get with it )
J. R.
Such a lovely place with trees that created sheltered spots in so many different places. Perfect for socially distanced picnics and walks.
C. S.
Wonderful children's park . Lots of paths to walk and some quiet areas to picnic or relax
A. F.
Lovely place to walk your dogs or have a picnic. Children will love the space to run around. Cowherds pub on tap for refreshments. Large car park. Absolutely love the common 😁😁
S. I.
I come here to take a break from my research and refresh my mind. It’s one of my favourite places in Southampton.
S. L.
Lovely place my 4 year old always loves visiting. Rainbow trail is great. Feeding the ducks is fun and the play area is brill.
P. H.
Large open space with pond, and child play pool. I did not realise how big and old the cemetery was, very interesting headstones to read. Lovely afternoon spent her
C. D.
It's ok but it does tend to be overcrowded and I don't enjoy trying to park which is time limited and they charge for the actual car park. It's fairly well maintained though the paths need tlc. It's a bit of a motorway for bikes too. Plenty of bins and benches to take a rest but it's not my favourite place for a walk in soton.
S.
Nice to have such s large open space so close to the center. Mix of finished and unfinished paths, includes a pond. Suitable for the family to relax or walk the dog. Play area and pub.
D. M.
Went with my girlfriend & her two little ones on Easter Sunday. They have such a good park there ..but need more seating tho & shelter areas
N. B.
very nice green space in the heart of a busy city
L. M.
Lovely park situated close to the centre of Southampton, cowherd pub great food good service. Children's adventure park close by as well as bird lakes inside the park great place to walk your dog or just get away from hustle and bustle of life lots of parking and cafe and ice cream shop no brainer fully recommend.
A. R.
Absolutely an massive place.. good for exercise, taking your dog for a walk, it also has some outdoor gym facilities. More importantly it is clean.
m. m.
This is a lovely place for families and dog walkers. You can spend the day there, perhaps watching the football. There are lots of paths criss crossing the area, and a lovely duck pond and ornamental lake. The newly completed children's playground is an exciting place for the kids, and is close to the ancient "Cowherd" pub, with delicious food and choice of beers. The hot chocolate is good too.
P.
Great play structures, good washrooms. Solid double zip line for bigger kids and nifty castles and a nest-thing to chill on if you're smaller...
S. M.
Love the common so many different trails to follow and things to see great for walking the dog and a lovely play area for the children visit at least twice a week
S. S.
Wish to have some more play grounds for kids
I. A.
Beautiful park with plenty of space to walk for everyone. Enjoy running here too and park run is there every Saturday.
A. T.
Favourite bit is the old cemetery - peaceful, great place to spot a wide range of birds from Britain's smallest the goldcrest to one of the larger, common buzzard
C. B.
A huge place to have a picnic or a scenic run. It's also perfect for dog lovers. There's a pond where they can play in and there's plenty of wildlife as well. Kids will also have an awesome time here. 👍👍
A. R.
Amazing place to hang out with the family and friends. So much for the kids young and old to do. Bring a packed lunch and snacks and you can waste the day reading quietly or gallavanting hilariously: kite-flying, playing footy, tag, 🌲 climbing, feeding birds at the ponds, rough and tumble with your pets or your peeps, sun-bathing, birdwatching, picture taking, meeting new peeps, joining a live gig, eating ice cream or just simply chilling.
Amazing place!
D. O.
Great place to go to the park, walk or ride bikes with the family. There is also a fishing lake. Also lovely to just go and chill out.
They sometimes hold fun fairs and small festivals throughout the year.
F. C.
Lovely big park with nice trails to walk through patches of forest or just picnic on the grass
N. D.
Nice big open space to go for a walk. Take the kids on their bikes, the paths are good for it. A nice duckpond and a play area. The cafe is ok but if you have bikes, make sure you have a lock.
A. W.
Hard to rate a park.. however there's free parking for the first 4 hours which is great and it makes for a good dog walk - although there's always a lot of dogs. Lots of different paths to explore and plenty of grass and trees. Right by a pub (the cowherds) and there's a cafe within the grounds (although the cafe doesn't allow dogs inside and doesn't take card).
There's although a newly refurbished playpark for children with lots for them to do and a small outdoor gym for those wanting to get fit outdoors. Oh and there's park run here on Saturdays too.
Doesn't have the best reputation for being a safe area in the evenings and at night. But daytime's are lovely and generally safe if you're with someone.
d. d.
If we were in the same era as before COVID, I would have given it a 4,5 stars. So if you don't care about cover thats my rate.
If you do care, than its a 3 star Max. No control whatsoever on distancing, max number of people together, cross-contamination... nothing. But its still a huge and beautifull place to go and have a break.
J. P.
Great outdoor space in the city.
J. M.
I love this open space it is great for walking and running. There is a wildlife cafe and a play park which has just been refurbished and it now excellent. There is a duck pond but it is depressing, dirty and smelly. There is a good pub on the edge which has good food and beers.
H. H.
Great area to walk, take your kids and the dog. New children's play area is fantastic. Lots of cycle/skate paths
T. P.
A lovely little spot for a family picnic.
J. W.
A very extensive area of natural parkland within the centre of Southampton. Large open areas of grassland for recreation surrounded by dense woodland where nature abounds. A number of lakes hide themselves around park. There is a children's recreation area and a 'hidden away' nature centre that provides refreshment too.
n.
Nice area for a stroll or picnic, weather permitting
D. C.
Great for picnics in the summer and scary dog walks in the foggy mid morning. The cafe is the one place you can eat and have a water vole run under your feet and not expect the place to be shut down for health and safety. Pub is okay. Lots of activities going on and lots of secret spots to discover.
H. M.
A place for Peace & tranquility. always soothing to your eyes & heart. Love it >
Common is Southampton's lung
S. W.
Very well maintained communal open area. People generally friendly, give you plenty of space to get on with whatever you want to do. Please keep it tidy for the rest of us!
A. C.
An amazing place to have in the middle of a city, with so much history behind it - a zoo, a racecourse, an artesian well, several reservoirs, a gallows and of course the cemetery. Nowadays it has a superb new playground, a nice pub and cafe and hosts all sorts of events during the year, ranging from running to music festivals.
C. R.
Great Park in Southampton for kids of younger ages. Has a cafe too which only took cash. Not sure if that's the norm
S. M.
Me climbing trees. Something I love to do regularly. Always full of characters and interesting activity. Plus the sun constantly shines there throughout the daytime so you can't go wrong
A.
Really big park. Great for families, joggers or dog walking. You can stay on path or explore the woods. They have a nature centre and cafe. The playground is newly built and really big, with a water area and lots to play on. There is a duck pond for feeding ducks and they have regular fairs and festivals here.
A. M.
Perfect place for a lovely walk.
n. J.
Southampton common is massive, it's great for taking walks in. There is a pond there, the grass is always well kept. There is a children's play area, gym area as well. I can't remember parking wise but liked it. I know there are roads around the common where one can park but not sure if it has its own parking.
D. M.
Great Common. Walk, cycle, run, play, relax. There is a newly constructed play area with sand, water features, zip wires and safe stuff to climb over, under and through. A child friendly pub nearby with good food. Plenty of parking not too far away.....perfect!
U. V.
Good place to go out with the kids!
S. M.
Great spot in the heart of Southampton for walking, running or just generally relaxing. Kids will love it here, there is plenty of space for running around and kicking a ball, and the play areas are well-equipped. You can park in various locations around the perimeter.
M. T.
Great space for a dog walk
S. F.
We went there for flying our kite and for let our daughter to play at the new children playground... That was a bit disappointing, it's new and it has lots of toys, however they used far too much sand, and sand plus rain, it's not really a good combination. It was difficult even to walk there. They should have limited the sand to one defined area. A part from that, the common is a really nice place for a walk, trees, nature, wide spaces, silence, clean air, a barbecue... All in the middle of the city.
T. M.
Lovely common for walking and playing
B. W. B. B.
Great for dog walking. Bike paths and woodland areas just for pedestrians. The boating pond is perfect for all RC craft and sailing yachts, when the wind is right. Has a fishing lake (rod licence needed) which caters for all the family situated in a quiet restful area.
J. S.
Great place to walk the day was a good day weather wise cold but bright and it was good seeing everyone enjoying the day and the kids enjoying the play area we enjoyed a hot chocolate from the kiosk would definitely recommend it blew the cobwebs away x
J. B.
Awesome place for kids.
R. J.
Great playpark for the little ones.
B. E.
Massive open space. Great place to hang out with friends.
S. I.
The common is one of my favourite parts Southampton, nice big open spaces mixed with dense and covered woodland walks, great for quiet walks or family picnics. A good children's play park and a few lakes where you can feed the birds, a pub, a cafe, and a woodland education center. It's a nice escape from the city.
I. B.
Great fun! BUT so busy on Easter Sunday!
J. M.
Really lovely place. Huge park in the middle of the city perfect for a quick escape.
There are some fairs during the year and there is park run every Saturday which is great.
The play area for kids is big and very nice, I do not understand why the water games if they are expensive to maintain and they totally abandon them but still nice. The coffee is lovely on summer days.
I would say that you never get ride of the city noise. During busy hours you have to be very deep in the park to avoid the noise. I hope traffic restrictions due to air pollution start soon so we can all have better air and health.
H. B.
Wonderful play park for children of all ages, nice place to go for a walk too.
C. W.
Good space for the whole family to gather when it's sunny and warm. At least for me.
Saw many barbecues and picnics.
H. H.
It's a good place for a 5k run or less with great views of different ponds and a fairly level ground. It's also great for a romantic walk out friendly park activities. Growing up with Richmond park and Wimbledon common right around the corner I can't say it offers as much wildlife or hard terrain but it's still a fun day out.
N. F.
Big open space, clean & well kept. Large green for walking dogs off the lead, play area & splash pool during the summer for kids. Well maintained paths for runners & cyclists.

This is a huge open space where people walk, jog, cycle, kick a ball around, visit the ducks, play in the playground, spot birds and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.
I'd like to have given 5 stars but parts of it look "tired", the area where the playground used to be hasn't been finished off, many of the paths have pot holes, the woods need some attention... It's such an important resource for the people of Southampton but it does not have the cared-for look that it deserves. Maybe that will happen in 2019?

Gr8 fair for childrens specialy in a school holiday

It has a large area so is good for dog walking and exercise! However, it is mostly just wood and field and there is not much apparatus for exercise. Also, there is a children's park but not in the greatest of conditions. Overall, it is a good area for jogging or dog walking, etc.
T. Y.
Great open space, occasionally host special events. Good for runners, dog walkers, families and people looking to relax. There is a cafe, children's playing facilities, and several ponds for wildlife.
t. o.
Nice place with parking available .
Nice play ground for kids with safe cage and inside tables with seat's to keep your eyes on your kids .
L. M.
What was disappointing was the children's play area. It is so much less than what was planned. All the exciting water play equipment is without water. Children were valiantly playing there but it is so much less fun. The two flying foxes were just the supports no flying bits. Even the little roundabout was really difficult to push. It needs oiling.
Come on Southampton. This is a flag ship park. Sort it.
The common itself was green and open and lovely with lots of people picnicing. It's a pity about the scorch marks on the grass from the barbecues.
K. A.
One of the biggest Southampton City parks, provides you peace of mind with its beautiful oaks, small lakes and water birds on those lakes. Good for walk and to be with children, children have playground aa well there.
W. R.
Great place for riding a bike, going for a walk or taking the kids to the play area - good that they've fixed some of the water features but some still need fixing.. there is a great lake there that would be ideal as a boating lake, not sure why they don't set it up as Southampton really needs a boating lake, also the play area replaced a paddling pool and have never understood why they couldn't of also incorporated a paddling pool as really needs it, anyway the common is overall great and well maintained.
D. B.
Has the touch of nature. Good place to take a jog or walk your dog. Some parts also have a jungle feel to it.
O. R.
I love this place...fresh and clean air and children and family friendly park.
J. G.
Always lovely and peaceful and relaxing here! Great for everyone, from personal training, sports , cycling, families. Lovely pub to finish day off( when not in lockdown)
A. Y.
Southampton's gem. It's got something for everyone: a childrens playpark, wide open areas for games, lengthy paths for cycling, jogging and walking (including cycle-free paths through wilder areas), a bit of local history in the shape of a historic graveyard, plenty of natural history, several well-positioned pubs at its periphery, and even a pond for model boats. And it's large enough to comfortably accommodate everyone, even during these social-distancing times. Unmissable if you visit Southampton.
d. p.
Beautiful open space in the heart of the city. Open fields for sitting and playing games, kids play area and wooded areas for shade and wildlife hunts. Also ponds and boating Lake
S. C.
The park itself is really good for the children. So that gets 5 stars. However, I will mark it down because the man at the park kiosk was rude to us when we challenged him about only serving us coffee in non-recyclable cups and not our own. Even phoning the other kiosk to make sure we didn't try it there.
N. S.
Nice playground for kids, with nice sandy area.. Gets the beach feel for kids. And adults alike
y. r.
Fantastic place for a.. Jog? What can I say, it's a park... Plenty of open areas for picnics/barbeques/pet handling/ sports, the lack of lighting along some of the paths leads to some great runs/cycling in the admittedly creepy northern thicket (it's pitch black so be careful!)
m. m.
Went during traveling fair..
They seem to have upped there game a bit since I last went to a travelling fair..
Not cheap but little one left Happy
D. c.
Great place summer or winter for walks/bikes chilling in sunshine and park great for kids take your own bbq allowed please make sure you clean up I always take a bottle of water to cool charcoal down and leave by bins. I've cream at hawthorn centre extortionate!
C. s. g.
Kids really enjoy this park. It is a pity that since they opened it, it doesn't seem to have had any maintenance whatsoever.
D. S. L.
Nice open space, good place to walk, run, ride or walk the dog. It has a very popular children's play area which is large and has a great variety of play equipment
J. L.
Great place for walking cycling and a kids play area
A. S.
It need a proper running track. Ao many people use it for sport. It id a nice escape from the traffic and for an evening walk. Many rubbish bins are very full, leaving litter around them. The park needs more bins.
H.
Love the place. It's beautiful, looked after and clean. As a runner I go there quite often and hundreds of other runners too. Can get very crowded on saturday morning around 9AM because of the Parkrun and all the major outdoor events also take place here (Fun Fair, Common People Festival... etc).
J. C.
A lovely area to visit, in the middle of it all you wouldn't be able to tell your in a city. Great for a stroll and running. I recommend the parkrun every Saturday @ 9am, its a free event organised by volunteers and can be run or walked as you wish.
D. K.
Great open space in Southampton. Really good children's play area with STEM related furniture.
A. H.
A bit more shady areas would be appreciated. Sand and water good fun on a hot day. Climbing frames mostly ignored by 6 yr old - a paddling pool might have been nicer
D. D.
Nice for your microbreak. It can be a bit crowded on weekends and there is evidence of dogs ;) but good for micro breaks during the week and the wildlife center and cafe is a nice retreat at a small pond.
P. T.
I love to go for a walk around common and spend two to three hours enjoying the cool breeze and birds Chipping. Nice place to hang out with friends and family.
m. v.
Good for dog Walking around the common is fun and interesting. With two ponds and play area for children. Plenty of open spaces.
s. m.
A beautiful walk around an old cemetery. Huge park with pond and a lake. Lots of birds. Close to nature.
K. L.
Big country park which is great. Saw an adventure play ground with a zip wire for younger children as well as equipment for the older ones. Saw plenty of people having BBQs during the day and well into the night when I was working on an event there. However as good as this sounds, I've been told by event security that after dark the bushes and woodlands are infamous locally as a dogging area and should be avoided. It's also infamous as a cottaging area too. Though fortunately I didn't see any of this I did witness a group of some 20 youths rampaging on the event site being chased off by security.

I have great memories of the Common from childhood and it has remained relatively unchanged through the years. Beautiful place on the edge of Southampton for a walk, picnic or just chilling out. You can go to the Cowherds for a meal, visit the nature sanctuary or go in the (very) old graveyard. There is so much to do and see on the Common.
J. N.
Amazing palace to take pets and overall a massive park which you could go for a run through or just take a stroll through. Since it's so big you can take a football and have enough room to have a little match. Just a fun place to be
J. T.
Great place to spend a few hours in the sun & fresh air if your in the city. Large open green spaces, Wildlife center & large ponds, childrens play area, lots of paths for walking or running, forested areas. Great green space in the city.
S. M.
Great for picnics, a cycle or to feed the ducks. Wide open space used regularly by locals. Children's play park available but is next to a stream hidden in a ditch and a rather dilapidated paddling pool.
Π. Γ.
Amazing place to relax, have picnic or exercise!
S. O.
A great place for running, walking, cycling, or having a picnic wih family/friends
A. D. R.
The park is nice but most of it is left wild and people mostly follow the usual paths on cement. It is not very ornamental as there are no flowers being planted, just trees and occasional wild flowers. At night, it lacks illumination
d. g.
It is a beautiful place to visit, especially the views and the wonderful calm walks you can take around the hills!
J. H. (.
This is a beautiful green space for people to visit, and hang out at. The little park is nice too, although it's normally overrun by kids. Wouldn't advise going through the common at night with earphones in however.
L. B.
Perfect for walks all year round, the Hawthorns offers good hot food and drinks, the playground is great for all ages. 2 large ponds to spot ducks too. You many even find a game of quidditch on the flats. Or medieval swordfighting
P. H.
A good place to take the dog for a walk.
J. O.
Great place to sit and relax, lots of areas to enjoy and walk around.
L. W.
Local and fun for all ages. Many different activities, good for environment and I have had so many great memories at the common. Love to meet people here and come here whenever I can.
D.
It's a massive area with loads to do including a pub, big play park, nature reserve, restraunt/cafe, duck pond or more seagull pond, boating pond, at least 4 different very large field areas and woodland. There's not many cities that can boast a common like this anymore.
H. W.
Fantastic park! Lots of things to do with a lovely little cafe 👍
B. K.
Massive park great for a run or just a nice walk.
G. R.
Let's Rock Southampton was here. Great venue
K. S.
Absolutely great place to sit on a bench right by the cow herds pub and smoke a spliff and watch the world going past literally
D. L.
An excellent resource in the middle of the city! Lots of open space, children's parks, outdoor exercise areas etc. Also the Cowherds Pub which is open all day for food and the Hawthornes Centre (outdoor wildlife centre) are worth a visit. BBQs welcome in the summer I think.
K. M.
Love the common, acres of woodland to walk around. Very well presented and utilised by all.
J. B.
Very fond memories where myself and my sisters used to go all the time when we where young loved the Southampton show balloon festival why Southampton stopped this i do not know we had our childhood going up the common now we are in our fifties so that was many moons ago
J. E.
A great space for a variety of activities, including sports and a large children's play area. Includes a very shallow pool in summer for children to play in. Mostly fields and lakes with paths for walkers and cyclists. Paths are smooth enough for skateboarding or inline skating. Sometimes summer fayres are hosted here. It's a great place for amateur star gazing due to low levels of light pollution. Besides an ice cream van, The Cowherds is the only nearby food option, which is great for sit down meals, but not a good choice for snack food.
D. W.
Great place to walk and exercise animals and children. Plenty of space both open and wooded.
P. R.
It was a great experience with good weather
K. W.
The new park is good for a varied age range of children. The common is a great spot to train outside, to run,to bike,to play football etc. There is a cafe, The Hawthorns, and there are sometimes activities for kids in the holidays.
J. W.
Students in the university in Southampton are so blessed and privileged to be there. Beautiful wide open spaces, small lake with several types of water fowl, large play area, including, in warm weather, a water pool. For me, it's the freedom to enjoy yoga, Tae Kwon do, skateboarding, quiet places to sit and read/study. Not seen recently during my visits to the Common, but I'm sure it's still there, is the Nature Education reserve for young ones to learn and explore. And not least, right on the Common, the wonderful Cowherds restaurant - great for families too. The is so much about Southampton that makes it well worth the visit.
j. l.
Stunning place to go so much greenery and lots of places for kids to run
H. G.
Beautiful park with loads of space, we were out filming and had plenty of variety for shots to acquire
M. C.
Nice place to go for picnics with family, walk with the dogs or just by yourself or with friends/family.
I. G.
Great place to go chill in the summer but it's really nice to go train up there, weather you run, cycle or do other things.
Hope you'll enjoy 😁
S. P.
Great common. It's a huge space with pub, cafe, childrens play area and plenty of spaces to explore. Check out the old cemetery adjacent. Well worth the trip.
M. H.
Lovely tree lined walks and cycle paths. Several ponds for dogs and a cafe. The Cowherds pub is on the edge of the common and they serve decent food and the atmosphere is very friendly.
C. M.
Spacious walk with wide mainly smooth pathways throughout a wooden area with multiple entrances, two ponds, a children's play park, a splash pool, a local wildlife nature information and activity hub. Popular with joggers, dog walkers, children & people in general.
A. R.
Only visited a small part to watch our sons play quidditch at a tournament hosted by Southampton quidditch team.
Good open spaces and we could park near the location of the games on a side road.
Not really much parking in the park itself from what I could see.
B. R.
Common is beautiful and best place to walk and feel relax. The only disappointing part is the new playground. Having a cafe in the playground is fantastic and guys who are running it are very polite. Only few things for Southampton council to think about for any future playground development:
1. Combination of sand and water is not a good idea and flowers are already damaged by sand.
2. Wooden benches are never dry due to regular rainy days. At least they could be warnished.
3. Most kids (mines and friends) love to have more slides or higher slides.
4. More swings are needed due to high number of kids.
5. Many places are muddy and flooded. Drainage is essential.
6. As a parent, I found it difficult to watch my kids when there are many gates for kids to scape. Specially when it is busy.
7. Big gap under the fence on east side.
8. Entrance from south is always muddy. Maybe a better drainage is required.
s. k.
Always loads to do if love walking great play areas and wildlife. Bike riding without feeling pushed off to the main roads and safe for families
A. S.
Southampton Common is a beautiful place for the local families to spend a day.
It includes 365 acres (1.48 km2) of woodland, parkland, rough grassland, ponds, wetlands, nature trails, a paddling pool, a children's play area, a model yachting lake, and a fishing lake.
P. I.
Nice area plenty of walks and wildlife too especislly the birds songs .fresh air
M. P.
This is a vast common for walking , riding , running and any other type of activities that people wish to do in a public space . There is also a playing area for children . Great place to have freedom and fun.
D. B.
Great walks lovely place and an ice cream van and super play park for the kids
J. S.
I love the Common and refer to it as my extended back garden as I live within 5 minutes walk. There are opportunities to walk when it is quiet and there are times when it is (almost) crowded. There are lots of events as well as regular activities and attractions. The various ponds attract dog walkers of which there are many - learn about variations in the species ! There are play areas for children of all ages (ie including adults) and opportunities for learning the history of Southampton (the old cemetry and its occupants). The Hawthorns is an oasis for wildlife and whilst regrettably not as accessible as it used to be, provides a good learning point for small children as well as refuelling opportunity. Sometimes the music festivals and fairs contrive to change the nature of the area but these don't last long and bring revenue to the City.
m. s.
Water park was better for our hot summers to come not impressed with the new set up. Big slid has gone. Dog mess on the green more signs needed. Rats all around duck pond
S. K.
Lovely place to come for dog walks, races, Bbq's and picnics, especially in the summer months. Cow herds pub near by with friendly atmosphere.
J. W.
cool place to hang out and chill.
G. F.
Beautiful open space, mature trees and large areas of grassland. Well designed childrens playground. Popular pub which serves meals.
J. H.
Located in the centre of Southampton, the common provides a wide area of open space, usually frequented by joggers and dog walkers.
N. C.
Large open public space great for picnics, BBQ or a large get together.
C. L.
Love this local park, it's an oasis in the city.
Edit 6 months later: there have been a couple of bodies found in the park in the last few months. Would be wise to stick to open, visible paths and avoid it altogether when it's dark. Be careful! Such a shame.
P. -.
Large common park area can be very busy at weekends but quieter during week plenty of places to park at South end of the park
