Reviews of Ciao Roma

This is just a lay down for its food quality, service, atmosphere and value equation. I enjoy veal but its hard to find properly prepared but they have several veal dishes on the menu and mine was done perfectly. On site owner, staff speak Italian, lots of locals. Amazing desserts. Would be a great stop for coffee and dessert if you didn't want a meal but you'd be missing out. Best to do it all here and then go walk it off exploring Edinburgh. Bravissimo!
I. M.
This is the best restaurant we visited in Edinburgh. Friendly staff and delicious meals I must say, I’m a super picky person when it comes to food but this was just awesome. Super neat and chilled atmosphere as well. I love it. Would definitely visit again when next we visit. Deserves a 5-Star!
D. I.

Stopped off here for a coffee and coaxed in by the gorgeous array of cakes in the window. They did not disappoint. If we had more time in Edinburgh would have definitely come back for dinner. Beautiful looking Italian wine selection as well.

This is hidden gem in Edinburgh. I would give 10 stars if possible! Covid safe and super-clean. Next time we are in Edinburgh we will pick a hotel nearby just to have a lunch or dinner in Ciao every day. For the first time I see dishes look exactly like on pictures. Proper Italian cuisine how it should be with freshly made ingredients including home made pasta. Everything is so delicious! We tasted pasta, pizza, starters, desserts and coffee. Came back second day. Plus you are treated like you are the most important person here in pleasant price range of local pub (12-15 pounds main dish). Owner is so delighted about his business like he has just started but it is here 27 years! Design is fabulous as well! Complementary drinks at the end is so nice tradition in generous Italian style. This very clean restaurant (toilets are spotless) is many levels above than what prices indicates. Employees seem to be very happy to work here which is important as well.

Always a lovely meal, food and service have been great every time! Highly recommend
S. I.
From the moment you enter, you notice that atmosphere and whiff of a restaurant that has always been in the Mediterranean. It has a very authentic and endearing nineties atmosphere.
The food, pizzas, entrees and desserts, we all liked it. The waitress was very nice and very attentive, as well as the owner.
We will be back to try other dishes in the near future.

Day out in Edinburgh with a friend, we found this fantastic Italian Restaurant. Very friendly staff and absolutely excellent quality food . We had starter's of Crosstini Nduja and Bruscheeta. Well presented and just perfect . Mains Ravioli Al Granchio and Scalloppina Alla Romana. Again well presented and cooked perfectly. Unfortunately no room for a dessert but will definitely be going back when visiting Edinburgh in the future 🦀🥗🧀🥰

A nice spot for Italian desserts and drinks. We tried lots of items including ice creams and canoli and sfogliatelle, all was nice but not too great. The menu is all Italian, and the people are nice. The less star is for the decor really which is too weird for me. It's all pirate themed and a bit dark for my taste, but it was definitely unique!
m. M. J.
Best Lasagna outside of Italy, also try the eye fillet steak and their delicious desserts, Antonio has a passion for fine Italian cuisine, all of his staff are long term team members, just a wonderful crew !
S. P.
Lovely home-made pasta, including a haggis ravioli!
Friendly staff
Lovely wines and deserts.
My only criticism would be is that it is rather brightly lit, especially for an evening
J. B.
Love this restaurant! The food is excellent and the staff are very attentive. Definitely worth a visit.
D. S.
Always a pleasure visiting Edinburgh and getting a coffee here. I have yet to have food, but their drinks and desserts are something else. The pistachio gelato is even better than many I've had in Italy. The staff are always so lovely and welcoming. A great atmosphere all in all
A. P.
Excellent food! Had been there for lunch. Anna our waitress did a wonderful job looking after us. The pasta was fresh and delicious. The Nduja was yum! The tiramisu was lovely too.But the highlight no doubt was the gelato! Highly recommend visiting this place if you are ever in Edinburgh.( Don't have pics of the food because we were all to busy enjoying it)
D. W.
Absolutely fantastic place. Great atmosphere and staff were very welcoming. Make sure to try a dessert, amazing
E. R.
Noticed they did sicilian cannoli and had been craving it for weeks so popped in and got one as a takeaway. Was amazing!! Would definitely go back just for the desserts
C. R.
Rating: 7/10
Food: really good Italian food, the carbonara and garlic bread are really good.
Price: reasonably priced.
Other: decor is interesting, wait staff are friendly.
W. G.
Staff very polite. Nice restaurant. Could do with a little light music over everyone else's chatter when busy. And remove table from almost near kitchen entry point. As busy with staff in and out. But very nice and friendly. Food was nice.
L.
Absolutely wonderful restaurant. We visited on a day trip from Newcastle. The food was amazing (3 courses), staff were friendly and helpful and to top of an exceptional visit, I left my favorite hat and didn't realise until I was on the train home. The restaurant sent it back in the post, which to me is above and beyond customer service. Fully recommend. food was 10/10!
C. P.
What a fabulous restaurant. Excellent food, well priced, lovely staff and ice creams to die for. This hidden gem is well worth a visit. Loved it.
P. H.
The restaurant was buzzing! Clearly very popular! Staff so polite and attentive. Enjoyed our meal..lovely pre theatre atmosphere!
c. c.
We loved this restaurant so much we went twice during our 4 day stay in Edinburg. Delicious home cooked meals, gluten free vegan options and gorgeous desserts.
J. H. R.
Stopped in for a late dinner before we got the train to London. Lovely pizza and a spectacular sea food risotto. A proper Italian bistro.
L. H.
Reasonable Italian food for a fair price. We had the fish dishes which weren't very exciting but good. The spinach & roast potatoes were on the oily side. The tiramisu was fine although I would have preferred cocoa to the sweeter hot chocolate sprinkled on it. The pomegranate ice-cream was declared as amazing by my dinner companion. Very good decaf espresso - no complaints there!
E. B.
One of the best Italian places I've ever tried, authentic Italian kitchen with hand made pasta. The desserts are an amazing closure to a very good dinner
P. C.
Visiting Edinburgh for the weekend and stopped in for a meal last night with my family, great food and very friendly service. Would highly recommend. The kids loved it.
S. S.
Amazing food that is impossible to fault. The seafood was so fresh you could taste the ocean. The fillet steak was cooked to perfection it melted in the mouth. Pasta that was cooked immaculately with sauce that provided a most delicate flavour. Vegetables cooked just right salads fresh and vibrant.
This restaurant deserves every award it has plus more.
We wish we stayed in Edinburgh longer so that we would come and taste more of it’s menu.
Wish them all the very best.
I.
I loooove this place! The food is amazing and the people are always so kind. Would definitely recommend eating here, or just popping in for an ice cream or a cannoli.
N. S.
Food delicious, exciting sweet menu, service wonderful, very handy for festival theatre, great atmosphere, will be back.
J. K.
Lovely, friendly staff. Tasty food well made. Genuinely Italian. Great cannolo
J.
Went here quite a few time. Mainly satisfied. Food very delicious when not a busy time. They seem to have different menu during festival time (August), some food were not on the menu. I have a spaghetti carbonara tonight (very difficult to get a table if no booking), the dish seems being ready cook earlier. Spaghetti very soft, and the noodles are short. Compared with the same dish (taglialini carbonara) in July, it is a very huge different. Quite disappointed. Perhaps just not the great time to come during festival season if wanted to taste their best standard.
G. M.
Buonissimo! This place is super Italian, from the smell of the pizza oven in the air to the unique paintings on the wall. Their pizza is amazing and the staff was accommodating to our needs. They also make fresh pasta which is very difficult to find at Italian restaurants. I regret not getting any but I'll save it for next time.
S. G.
Nice rest a run by actual Italians. Interior somewhere between classy and classic, food above average and interesting as in focaccia with Mortadella. The wine menu is a bit limited unfortunately. We didn't try the Gelato but it looks delicious.
E. A.
Extremely tasty food with very friendly staff. Got it half price due to the eat out to help out scheme. However, it still would've been worth the full price
C. S.
Friendly if slightly slow service. Family friendly. Tasty food with good selection, same for wines. Ice cream a must.
A. S.
Brilliant dining, excellent service. Well worth that extra 10 minute walk just out of town
J. C. (.
The food was very nice and the service was good too. The food came quite quickly considering how busy it was. Was probably a good idea to have a reservation.
A. L.
Really lovely atmosphere and very good value for fabulous food!
I. N.
Very good food, high level of watering! If you are in Edinburgh and you'd like to try a high standard italian food Ciao Roma is the right place. Definitely coming back.
M. B.
Wow, what an amazing place. This restaurant is worth traveling grate distance for. If you eat at one place on a visit to Edinburgh make it this.
R. G.
The food was delicious, the service was fantastic and the atmosphere was great. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
S. ..
We had dinner on Christmas..food was just ok..service extremely slow. .it was busy but not enough staff.. I felt sorry for the staff. Waited a long time for dessert 30 min wait for 2 scoops of ice cream.
Service was included in the bill too.
F. H.
Fantastic food and a great choice of wine. Super fast service and really pleasant staff. Well worth a visit and a 5 star.!
Also desert menu to die for..!!
G. D.
Amazing restaurant, our favourite in edinburgh. Prior to having children we enjoyed fine dining and travelled widely. We love ciao roma. The menu is authentic italian and high quality. The staff are great, particularly with our two young kids. We went for our daughters birthday today and they made it extra special! We will be going again, al ot!
T. K.
Excellent food and great service by Christian. He looked after my big luggage bag. The food was Italian at its best. I was here with my daughter.
M. K.
The best pasta I've ever eaten!!!
E. M.
Great restaurant service and food, enter by front door and it looks and feels like a family restaurant where everyone is welcome also we dined in area at rear which has a fun Spanish pirate theme.
G. R.
Excellent Italian, staff really friendly and energetic. Food was delicious and portion sizes were very good. Can see why it was voted the best Italian in Edinburgh. The draft larger was delicious
I. C.
Fun place, friendly staff. Food was good but not the best Italian I’ve had
O. A.
Staff were kind and friendly, desserts are amazing however slightly on the pricey side for what you get. Would recommend you check them out however definitely understaffed as orders took some time and staff often missed what was ordered.
D. G.
We had family meal on Saturday 13th November, the food ,wine and service were exceptional, even although restaurant was very busy staff were very attentive and helpful would definitely book again, well done to all
F. B.
Exellent authentic Italian food, service is also great and so is the hoast. All for a good price
S. Y.
My friend and I were looking for someplace to have desserts and went into this place because the ice cream display was tantalizing. However, after looking through their dessert menu, we decided to try the homemade tiramisu and it was delicious! It reminded me of the tiramisu I had in Italy and can’t wait to visit this place again to try their other dishes (especially the pasta!)
S. M.
Came here last night for the first time. Food was average. Menu limited on pasta dishes. The food was bland especially the starters meatballs and minestrone soup. not much taste. The main itself was OK. Tasted better. Staff friendly and helpful
C. H.
Loved this place. Almost didn't go in as it looks like an unassuming pizza and ice cream shop from the road but it is a proper Italian restaurant. Service was excellent. I had veal parmesiana with spinaci. He had veal roma. Flavours were excellent. Veal was not as tender as we've had in Italy. Gelato is award winning. Coffee good. Saw another server take the side plates rom our table and use them to set the next table. We hadn't used them but that is still not good. Spoke to our server about it and he seemed genuinely surprised and appropriately dismayed and, I believe, spoke to the other server about it. Left me wondering, though.
Z. A.
Incredible food even if they were busy . We took this as a good sign . Great service, extremely tasty food with a very wide authentic Italian dishes !
I. A. H.
Had a great evening with friends with fantastic food, with wonderful staff and supreme service. Would highly recommend a visit, can't wait to come back on our next visit to the city
D. L.
Family run restaurant with a real Italian feel. Good reasonably priced food and a lovely montepulciano. Will with a visit
H. S.
Little Italy absolutely beautiful inside. And the deserts and coffee spot on
M. S.
Pasta dish wasn't very good. Really small triangle pasta pieces filled with cheese and pistachio and mozzarella. Cheesecake was the best part of my meal. Delicious
v. d.
Italian family run, great for Festival Theatre visits, energetic helpful staff, good house wine, good menu which translates to the plate. Theatrical open kitchen is also fun to watch.
K. “. B. B.
You can't fail to have fun here. A friendly, inexpensive trattoria and an asset to the area. They also have a pre theatre menu: it's just across the road from the Festival Theatre !
N. T.
Went in for ice cream - very delicious and creamy. Would have loved to try the waffle cones but they were sold out.
Will update this when I've eaten in as well.
R. M. F.
Great food! Service was amazing! Really clean. Pastas and ice cream made in the house every day, fresh seafood and traditional Italian dishes. Enjoyed also the decor!
R. P.
Amazing. Had to wait a short while for a table, but well worth it.
True authentic Italian food, with a look and taste like your old Italian Nan is in the back cooking for her family.
Couldnt fault anything, from the Polpette to the Calzone just amazing.
As for the deserts... they are out of this world, if you only want 2 courses, go main and desert, you wont regret it.
If you want to pig our like me, go for all 3 courses. You will waddle out a very happy person indeed.
Genuinly fantastic!!!
F. M.
Another lovely dining experience at Ciao Roma - everything about this restaurant is great. If you are looking for tasty cuisine, professional service and affordable prices then this place is an excellent option! Thank you Ciao Roma - I will definitely be back soon.
D. W.
Very friendly family run restaurant. The service is excellent.
The menu selection is varied and the food is very good.
Highly recommend for single, couples and families.
J.
Wonderful food, friendly staff, reasonable prices. You simply cannot ask for more than that!
We had the crostini nduja, calzone, triangloli and tiramisu. All absolutely spot on. It tastes home made and the portion sizes are great. Loved it.
A. B.
Brilliant, very tasty food. Lovely service.
P. C.
Food, staff and ambience brilliant. Definitely recommend.
M. R.
Family kind great home made food. Small Italia in Edinburgh. Back soon
A. G.
Great food, really good and very decent prices. Very friendly staff and very clean ! You feel welcomed ! Well done Ciao Roma! 👏🏼
C. M.
We waited quite a long time for our order to be taken even though we3said it was a pre-theater meal. So meal was rushed.
A. L.
Food very good very welcoming staff
G. E.
We stopped in for lunch on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. The restaurant was bright and welcoming and we were greeted and seated promptly. There was only one other table with diners, so we had extra dedicated service. 3 picky kids all really found something they liked on the menu. Our waiter was attentive and very helpful. The food arrived quickly and our pizzas were hot, fresh and delicious. A tasty change from the pizza chains. Finished of work some ice cream to take away. Happy kids and happier dad. Recommended.
W. F. A.
One of the best places to have delicious homemade pasta meals. The vegetables always tastes fresh. The staff are very friendly and will keep asking if everything is okay. They have a fine selection of deserts to choose from. Definitely a good place to have dinner alone, with a lover, friends or family. I highly recommend it.
b. F. m.
A lovely Italian Treasure Island themed restaurant. Outstanding food and service. Great atmosphere. Would highly recommend.
E. d. P.
Best seafood pasta and canoli I've ever had
S. C.
Best Italian food you can ask for
A. V.
Tasty food, well presented by attentive staff. Happy to have found this restaurant while at the fringe. Back soon hopefully.
K. T.
Very close to festival theatre. Quick, child friendly when we ate (lunch) and accommodating staff. Food was nice
E. C.
My boyfriend and I loved this place! The haggis ravioli in whisky cream sauce was possibly the best pasta I've ever eaten, and the waiter was so lovely and welcoming. We'll definitely be coming back!
A. B.
All round good experience.
Bruschetta was tasty, decent carbonara.
Brilliant ice cream.
L. L.
Delicious food, in lovely surroundings with friendly helpful and polite staff. We Will definitely be visiting again. We both had Carbonara which was filling and deliciously cheesy and creamy with plenty of ham, we also had Garlic Bread with mozzarella which was also delicious. Well worth a visit for authentic Italian food and a warm welcome.
P. C.
Friendly Staff. Very good food
K. K.
Super friendly staff, lovely food and great coffee. If you are a treasure island fan ask to sit in the room dedicated to Robert Louis Stevenson 😁🏝️
R. H.
Gorgeous pizza and pasta, great atmosphere, authentic Italian
S. K.
Excellent dinner here - we both had veal (in two different forms) and loved it. The restaurant is a little tight, but in a cozy, not crowded way. Portions were delicious and well-sized. Staff was friendly and efficient. Will definitely return.
C. S.
First meal in a restaurant since lockdown and so glad we chose this place. Amazing food (especially the hot apple pie dessert) and excellent service - nothing was an issue and all the servers were smiling away! Good atmosphere and generally just a first class evening.
R. D.
Lovely dessert and friendly staff. The hot chocolate is just lush! Good value for money and good atmosphere.
A. B.
Oh well. Wonderful food, stunning service and attention to detail by Anna, competitive prices. I would go every single time I will come to Edinburgh. Thank you!
k. p.
Great food accompanied by excellent service!
I’ll definitely be back upon my next visit to Edinburgh!
C. W.
I really liked this place. It had a great menu and was buzzing at lunchtime. Despite being so busy our food came quickly. Had the feel of a real Italian family place. There is some fairly awful decor! The murals are both brilliant and awful at the same time (made me laugh)
A. R.
Delicious fresh Italian food. I went for lunch with two vegetarians and one fussy eater. One hour later four happy stuffed customers rolled out the door. Next time I should leave room for dinner dessert, they look great.
G. G.
Love their affogato, that's all I had. But feels very Italian inside, the place has an atmosphere of Italy. It's hard to tell how big the place is from the front
A. H.
A wonderful evening with fabulous food and friendly staff, would strongly recommend and will definitely return next time we are in Edinburgh
T. N.
Had a lovely meal and wine. All served with very friendly and efficient staff.
s. m.
Fantastic authentic Italian food
S. B.
Been coming here every year we've been coming to Edinburgh. Never disappointed, always a scrumptious meal. Never managed a sweet yet. 😋😋😊
E. C.
Nice staff and wonderful ice cream😀
T. C.
The food is simply fantastic, very professional staff who speak both English and Italian. Highly recommended
C. V.
Strongly recommend, we had a lovely time at Ciao Roma! The ingredients tasted fresh and were deliciously prepared and cooked. The Italian staff was very friendly and tended to all our needs. Looking forward to our next meal there!
PS: Try the excellent Haggis Ravioli.
J. F.
Lovely meal great place to eat service brilliant but under staffed as most places at the moment steak was awesome
A. י.
A warm and inviting restaurant with a cosy and genial atmosphere. The food was excellent, although with the main courses, the portion sizes are a little small for someone with a large appetite, so I would recommend also getting a side dish to go with your main course. They had a wide range of desserts and their coffees were prepared to perfection.
It only loses a mark for the portion sizes, and the waiting times can get quite long when the restaurant becomes busy. Overall, an excellent family-run place that I would highly recommend for pre-theatre night out.
M. H.
Freshly made pasta fantastic food friendly helpful staff for a truly authentic Italian experience please visit
M. H.
Nice calzone which comes with a tomato dipping sauce. Wasn't blown away by the quality of the food but perfectly pleasant and no complaints Dinners can also spice up their food with a range of chilli sauces. Staff are all very friendly and happy to help. Nice atmosphere, decor might be described as a little kitsch but not so bad to offend.
C.
Prices reasonable for Edinburgh, service was ok. There was a loud Italian radio playing the whole time that played mostly commercials. Not exactly the best dinner time ambience. Food was good, ice cream very good. Food took awhile to come out, even though the restaurant was slow. Sort of a cheesy pirate theme in the second dining room we sat in.
P. B.
Totally unassuming place blindsided me with a supremely tasty spaghetti carbonara which was as good as any I've had anywhere else (including Italy), and really, really tasty Italian ice cream (one of the best pistachios anywhere!). Only after I had finished my meal did I see the large signs in the window advertising their awards as best Italian restaurant in Edinburgh several years running - obviously well deserved! An absolute treat - highly recommended!
e. b.
Great fresh pasta selection!
R. T.
Brilliant coffee and canoli. Excellent service!
M. E.
The ambience was pleasant, the service was good but the pizza was a bit disappointing. The base was alright, but the tipping was a little sparse. I'm sure the cheese should have been mozzarella but I think it was red Leicester, do no so authentic. So sorry I would recommend.
a. i.
Everything we tasted- pizza, pasta, soup, ice cream and cakes- were delicious.. Highly recommend it!
j. l.
Can't say I particularly enjoyed the meal in here. Bolognese tasted as if it had been made with tomato soup and pate was average at best. My husband's meal seemed to be a bit better. Staff were nice.
A. B.
Interesting decor on a pirate theme. Staff were competent. Reasonable selection on the menu although I felt it lacked something saucy and simple such as a Puttanesca. I was a guest so can't comment on the price/value. As it is Edinburgh worthwhile booking ahead.
S. S.
Good helpful staff and great food
M. S.
Being in Italian restaurant in Scotland we decided to compromise and we chose Haggis Ravioli which were good and left us a space for marvelous ice cream. Nice interior and nice staff made our meal even more enjoyable. We definetely would recommend
J. S.
Amazing food and wine, incredible value for money given the quality of the food and portion sizes!
M.
Great food with amazing service. I would haven 5 stars if not for all of the senior/older employees not wearing a mask at all, and the kitchen staff not covering their noses
S. H.
Easily the best Italian meal I've eaten in AGES. Been twice, will come back again next time I'm in Edinburgh.
J. J.
Great food & nice atmosphere
D. C.
Had Italian meals all around the UK & Monaco. This the best I have ever had for food, service & surroundings. Won't be long before I am back.
S. A.
Wonderful food and excellent service
G. N.
Excellent food, run by real Italians.
L. M.
We had been here twice before pre theatre and it was great! Not this time. My friend booked and asked to sit at a specific side of the restaurant. When we arrived the restaurant was almost empty but wanted us to sit at a different place. They eventually split a table for 4 so that we could sit in direction we wanted. The bruschetta was 3 bits of small garlic bread with cold oily bits of tomato on. My friends Carbonara looked like a half portion. When she questioned it she was told it was definitely a full portion. It was tiny and tasteless. The waiter said have you not been here before did you expect the portion to be bigger? She told the waiter she didn’t enjoy it. Water off a ducks back! My chicken supreme was just that. No veggies. Thankfully I’d ordered a side salad. My friend had to ask twice for Parmesan cheese. The waiter tried to remove my plate before I was finished! The desserts were lovely and the price was ok. We won’t go back though.
I. W.
We had been regulars at this restaurant for many years. Having moved away a couple of years ago it was a pleasure to come back. We were given such a warm welcome . Im glad to say that it felt like we were here just last week. The food was as excellent as it always was and the staff even remembered us!! You don't get any better than that. I'm not surprised they have won best restaurant. Thanks for such a lovely evening . We will definitely be back. Loved it.
S. D.
Convenient to our lodging in Hermit's Croft, Ciao Roma quickly became our favorite Italian restaurant in the area. Very friendly service. Authentic Italian through and through. First visit, pasta for this vegetarian with sensitivity to milk products in the USA. No problem, though, in the UK, so it's a real treat to enjoy cheese, cheese, and more cheese in the UK. And Ciao Roma captured me on our first visit. Future visits meant take away pizza: 3 times during our week in Edinburgh. I ate the entire pizza each time, and had no stomach problems. Yippee!
A.
My favourite Italian restaurant in Edinburgh. They have amazing food. Every time I go there I'm not disappointed. Other than pasta, pizza and risotto they also have very delicious homemade ice cream. They also offer students discounts which made it more affordable for me and my friends. Definitely recommend!
D. D.
We give here every time we are in Edinburgh. We have two cealiacs in the family and Ciao Roma does every pizza or pasta in gluten free varieties. And it's awesome. Super friendly staff as well
B. M.
Authentic Italian from top to toe, the food is made with love and the best possible ingredients. Service is excellent.
K. S.
Very friendly welcome! Nice atmosphere. Service was very friendly - maybe a little slow but it was busy. Pizza was great and dessert was outstanding! Will definitely come again :)
A. G.
Nice staff but food very average. Wouldn't rush back.
J. B.
Lovely Italian food, very friendly staff. Been here there times, on a date, with the family and as part of a large group and all were enjoyable. Get seated in the pirate themed area of you are up for a laugh. Also do not will dessert and get an ice-cream, they are all delicious.
K. W.
Absolutely fantasticoooo.
Everything was spot on and everything done right. Only fault was my side dish to the main come out after everyone else was served there main but this should not take anything away from the food.
Perfect for kids too.
O. H.
Amazing restaurant! Incredibly efficient and polite staff, delicious food presented beautifully, true Italian finesse. We had the three-course pre-theatre dinner option, which was very reasonably priced! We hadn't booked but were only a party of two, so we were able to be seated close to the entrance. Would recommend booking, especially for larger parties, as it was quite busy (on a Saturday evening). Otherwise, would absolutely advise anyone visiting Edinburgh Old Town that they must visit this establishment!!
M.
We went to Ciao Roma on a Sunday evening and it was awesome. First of all, the service is great, with friendly staff. Our food (pizza) was amazing, absolutely delicious, and served no more than 10-15 minutes after we ordered. It was an absolute joy to have dinner in this restaurant.
D. T.
Wonderful, truly Italian people, food, and atmosphere!
Came here looking for a relaxed Italian atmosphere. I was convinced after looking at the pictures, but I still went in with average expectations. However, I found this wonderfully welcoming place that felt more like visiting old friends than walking into a restaurant on the high street.
The staff is Italian and, unlike what some other reviews here say, I found them very polite, warm, friendly. They served me authentic Bruschetta and a wonderful Pizza Siciliana, very tasty cooked just right. Be sure to ask for chilli oil to get a cup of flavour awesomeness with large slices of green and red chillies inside for even more kick!
Ciao Roma is by far my go-to Italian in Edinburgh and I'll recommend all my friends stop by for this yummy little piece of Italy.

I loved this place! The food was absolutely delicious. They have a few halal options on the menu as well and that made the experience even better for me. It's reasonably priced and had student discount. I loved everything about this place.
L. V.
Extremely nice waiter who made the experience that much better, but the food was also very nice! Very good selection of pizzas and real italians with a knowledge of their culture. Best pizza in town
H. B.
The pre-theatre menu was not very interesting, but the desserts were quite nice. I got served the wrong drink and the server was not very polite about it after. Also we had to wait for a while between our main and dessert, which meant it was more rushed than we would have preferred.
K. K.
I really like the decor in this restaurant. For some reason it has a pirate theme. A bit bizarre for an Italian restaurant, but hey, everyone needs a USP. I think this has to do with the heritage of the building they now operate the restaurant in. The food was unremarkable, but absolutely fine. Waiting staff were great, no complaints about the service. Price wise it would be a mid tier restaurant, not very cheap but not too expensive either.
C. O.
Really enjoyed the pizza here, service was prompt, staff friendly and attentive even though it was very busy. Food was great, I ate far too much. Pizzas are quite large and would serve two, easy.
H. C.
Good food. Thanks
B. F.
Have eaten her multiple times. Great food and even better service. They are quick, friendly, and always helpful with recommendations. The pirate theme in one room confused me but it's fun.
V. L.
Quite empty for a Friday evening, only one other table of customers eating in the huge room we were seated at. Staff were confused when I asked for a Morgan spice and coke also when I had a baileys. It was one single measure in a large whisky type glass and lots of ice. The drink only about 1cm in depth. It looked a bit like a junk shop with the dirty manicans dressed in dirty outfits and many other props thick with dust. At leist the food was OK but I wouldn't recommend Ciao Roma to anyone.
T. K.
Great fun, restaurant has 2 sections, traditional italian and a pirate themed side, where we ate. 10 of us, sat at long wooden table surrounded by loads of swords, cutlasses, treasure maps, skeketons in cages, etc. Food was great and staff friendly. Loved it.
N. H.
Fantastic Italian restaurant with mouth-watering desserts
D. S. (.
Have been frequent guests to this great Italian eatery, for more than 20 years. A real family favourite.
m. l. w.
We have been there twice and never regret a minute
Fantastic food and excellent quality service
W. D.
Ate here last night after an enjoyable evening at The Opera. The food was indeed good and the staff appeared lively and very busy. We were ignored for almost an hour after placing our order for food, but no matter. My real complaint and the abiding memory I shall have of Ciao Roma's was their range of red wines by the glass and the quality of the limited wines that were on offer, which was to say the least extremely disappointing. The one offer of a half bottle of Barolo in the Wine List was not available. So sad to imagine an Italian Restaurant with an abysmal quality of red wine by the glass. Had we been a party of four then the full bottle listing had much to offer. But for two people who enjoy at most two glasses of wine (red for me, rose for my wife), then Ciao Roma's is sadly lacking. Why spoil a good meal with tasteless wine. Italian wines-per-glass in other restaurants in town can be excellent drinking. if I ever return to Ciao Roma's it will be to eat with perhaps just water to drink. So very, very disappointing.
E. C.
A delicious slice of Italia in the heart of Edinburgh. Pastas are so fresh and there’s plenty of garlic in the marinara! Be sure to leave room for dessert. Their sundaes with homemade ice cream are ah-MAZE-ing. Family friendly and a great location.
M. D.
If you come get ice-cream at the end!
J. H.
Fabulous food and atmosphere, customer service was fab too 🙂
K. W.
We came in on a rainy evening with the kids, the staff were brilliant. Very friendly and kept the kids entertained.
The food was excellent and definitely try the award winning ice cream, it's so good!
We will definitely pay a visit again on our next trip to Edinburgh
D. T.
Very authentic Italian restaurant. Recently they've changed the menu and I have to say we preferred the old one. Apart from that, is an excellent place. Great food and amazing deserts! Highly recommended.
D. L.
Classic Italian restaurant with good food at a good price.
Don't be fooled by the size of the entrance, it's a lot bigger than it looks. Despite being very busy with pre-theatre diners, the service was quick and friendly.
N. M.
Long standing family run. Rather typical dismissive Italian service. Somewhat tired and trying to feed too many mouths. Ideal location for tourists particularly during festival. Food is OK and wine is good.
m. e.
Fab traditional Italian trattoria. Lovely food. Worth visiting just for the Tiramisu!
K. F.
Fantastic food. Great location for lunch before the theatre or dinner after. Best book for dinner though. We had lunch & wanted to go back after the show for dessert but they were fully booked from 4pm to 11pm.
p. s.
I felt I was actually in Italy, the pasta was out of this World, best meal I have ever had. Staff could not do enough for you. Highly recommend the Ciao Roma.
J. L.
Nice Italian restaurant. Service was good and attentive. Fresh pasta were really tasty and the ice cream was awesome . We recommend this restaurant and will be back :)
A. L.
Excellent food, friendly staff. Would defo recommend. Looking forward to going back
J. J. M.
Not a great experience. Food OK not great. Fillet steak, wasn’t. Some other cut of meat. Very chewy lots of gristle.
Upped from one to three stars as the ice cream and espresso was out of this world.
c. r.
Very nice food. My friend wasn't able to eat his pizza cos he started feeling unwell and so they insisted on refunding it for us. They also give 20% student discount.
T. (.
Food is amazing, but the service became so bad as soon as we wanted to pay that I can't rate it highly. I'm talking waiting 20 minutes for a bill after we asked twice, then another 15 mins for a card machine before we gave up and paid at the bar instead. Felt that as soon as we were done eating, they stopped caring! And it wasn't even busy.
P. D. N.
At a recent visit to this restaurant the staff were very courteous and attentive. The food was of the highest quality and standard. The wines were exceptional and all.in all my party were very pleased with my choice of restaurant. My compliments to the manager and staff
P. C.
Have been several times and enjoyed the typical Italian hustle and bustle with attentive servers and friendly kitchen chefs. Lovely food and authentic pastas. Not cheap but worth the prices.
S. M.
The place itself is really nice and characteristic, with lots of pictures and decorations, staff is very friendly and makes you feel at home. I had a margherita pizza that was lovely and a good and not so expensive red italian wine.
I reccomand this place if you pop to Edinburgh.
Ciao Christian, saluti da Bozen ; )
M. D.
Great tasting ice cream and lovely staff
K. S.
Lovely customer service and delicious food! Salad could do with a bit of dressing but other than that divine
M. G.
Had a nice coffee and a really tasty breakfast just what was required after a heavy night. Nice laid back atmosphere. Service was really quick.
P. A.
Great place good food
J. C.
Found this place by chance on our second night whilst having a 3 night break in Edinburgh. Was so impressed with the food, service and atmosphere that we went back on our third night. Would highly recommend and will be back if we go to Edinburgh again.
S. G.
Love this restaurant. Food is delicious. The desserts are awesome. Hard to choose from. The service was very attentive but plenty time to enjoy your food.
S. S.
Lovely restaurant impeccable service gorgeous food
M. S.
This was a great place to stop for gelato and a pizza on our last day in Edinburgh. Friendly staff (although it did take a little work to get their attention) and open fairly late. It could have been because we were there so close to closing time.
C. M.
Perfect. We had a meal after enjoying a show at the nearby theatre. Great service, food was served quickly and was very fresh. Great prices too.
d. w.
Delicious food and first class service with a style :-)
S. P.
Fantastic little locally owned Italian coffee shop come pizzeria / deli.
I'm slowly working my way through all the food options (pizza, lasagne, Bolognese sauce, salads, sandwiches, pattisaries) and enjoyed them all so far.
M. S.
Great food. Worth coming.
A. M.
Amazing!! The food was 1st class and the staff wonderful. Please give it a go.
B.
Superb atmosphere. Great food.
L. A.
Great place. Alot of Spanish pirate paraphanalia. Interesting. Food was good
M. p.
Service was good! Staff are friendly. Food was average, just fine through. Dessert menu is spectacular, so save some room for that.
G. W.
Bog standard Italian fare. The restaurant clearly gets by on the fact that it's opposite a theatre. Waiter was charming until we had ordered after which his attention drifted. I should have read more reviews before we committed.
N. E.
Absolutely amazing food and service by the staff, very nice place to eat. Definitely visit next time we come to this city.
T. T.
Brilliant italian food.....pizza mouth watering! Outstanding service!! Highly recommend also for gluten free there pizza are delicious! Will definitely be going back! Highly recommend!!!

We’ve never been to a better Italian Restaurant! Delicious lasagna, professional servers, and interesting decor. If visiting Edinburgh, be sure to try it out.
J. D.
Great food and atmosphere will look forward to going back
J. B.
Great food and convivial atmosphere. Spent two consecutive evenings here with expanding group. Excellent unwind after show experience. Staff brilliant.
H. B.
Proper italian food served by an italian waiter in an authentically italian style trattoria. They were very gracious when we tried out our italian language "skills" on them. The haggis tortellini was a nod to Scotland (and delicious) but other than that I was in Italy for a couple of hours!
C. C.
The place serves wonderful food and ice cream and is very welcoming and downstairs you'll find some of the best free shows at the Edinburgh fringe . Plus the staff are very welcoming and on the ball.
C. D.
Nice, Warm & welcoming restaurant located nearby Festival Thearte. Excellent menu choices. Staff are very friendly and attentive and very responsible prices. Lovely Decor & atmosphere.

I. W.
Not been for years but still great food and atmosphere. We will be back soon
R. R.

Overall good experience. Parma ham and mozzarella appetizer was delicious. Ravioli main course was good but a bit tedious. Gelato dessert was the rea thing.
O. E.
We came here early during a Sunday evening and had a nice dining experience in an entertainingly overdone Italian interior. Good food including brilliant ice cream desserts. Staff was friendly.
B. B.
Quirky decor (skeleton in a cage anyone?) Cosy atmosphere and great food. All the Italian classics (and some new variations) cooked and prepared superbly.
