Really nice place and definitely high-end. Staff is really nice, helpfull and friendly. Very modern decoration. Meat is good but what a price ! If good meat is priceless for you then have a go.

What a nice little butcher/restaurant. You pick your meat size depending on how hungry you are. You can have. 200gr steak or a hefty 900gr with bone. The service is friendly and helpful. The meat apparently comes from Italy. The menu is really nice with the sides and desserts as well. If you are looking to have great meat in a nice atmosphere and if you are aroumd, do not miss it. Make sure you have a reservation though, if you want to make sure you have a seat, it is usually busy.

We popped in for drinks here.
Nice authentic Italian vibes, and of course, great selections of wines! Although the glasses were a little pricey, they gave us salami and focaccia.
We also ordered tiramisu and it was visually looking pretty and the taste of course was very lovely. I would love to come back for proper dining.

Visiting from Chicago where there are dozens and dozens of fantastic steakhouses, I was wondering what we would experience in London. We were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of meat offered at Macellaio.
The restaurant is perfectly suited to demonstrate their offerings. The butcher display case in the front of the restaurant is just perfect.
Bone marrow - amazing.
Beef tongue - soft and extremely tasty - perfectly done.
Steaks - just perfect and perfectly done.
Wine list - very nice.
If the other locations are equal to this location, they seem to have hit a homer for a steakhouse. Delicious.
Do yourself a favor and visit.

I think it’s no point to eat anything else in this restaurant except stakes. We had all kinds of pasta they had and also a burger and was rather underwhelmed with the taste or presentation of it all. The place is fairly small too so tables close by

The room at the back is cosy and pleasant but I suspect it can get a little noisy when full. The menu is extensive but pricey. The starters are great, enjoyed the tongue salad and lardo bruschetta, though the latter felt a little small. The fiorentina steak is priced by weight and I feel the 700 grams we were given must have mainly been bone, as it turned out to be an average sized meal. It was well cooked though we asked for it medium, half of it turned out medium rare. The sides were great though again pricey. Tiramisu was a disappointment as it hardly had any coffee in it. .

I went there twice and the first time experience was so so (maybe we didn’t order the right dishes) but the second time was brilliant.
The bone marrow is my favourite. The tartare on the well cooked marrow adds extra layer of texture and flavour as well as the pomegranate.
We also ordered T-Bone steak, 800mg. We had it medium rare at the beginning as recommended then asked to reheat to medium, which we felt was better as the piece was fattier and could take some cooking.
The service was great, very homely and casual. I found it nicer than some high end steak houses as they focus more on the food.

Friendly and hospitable staff. Not only steaks, they have lots of raw meat dishes on menu. Steak tartare with salt and pepper was almost bland but I guess it is to enhance raw meat flavour (Some people might find it too boring). Ravioli was really good, both filling in pasta and sauce were absolutely tasty. Steaks were a bit dry and thiner than expected. Wished it was more juicy. Despite a little disappointment on steak quality, I enjoyed dining there.

Absolutely Loved this place! High quality, tasty and delicious meats. You get to choose your own cut of beef, which they come and show you before cooking and have it grilled to your preference. The staff were brilliant and very welcoming, talking us through the menu in detail...where the meat was from, how it was cut and the best way to have it cooked. The fillet steak melted in my mouth and wanting more! We had the bone marrow and peppers stuffed with tuna to start which was also delicious! Finished off with delicious desserts, I recommend the cheesecake! Really great lunch and can't wait to go back!

It's heavily meat based, it's a butcher shop yes but I felt a variety of green would compliment the delicious meat well. Also, the playlist and american music really ruined the atmosphere.
Great staff. Luca was delightful. There's a lady with dark hair and glasses, also lovely and delightful. Heavily recommend the place for meat lovers.

This is our regular hang out for steaks. The staffs were friendly. Reservations are a must! The first time we came here we were lucky because there were seats; it was way early for dinner time!
The starters are good. we’ve tried the carpaccio and also the tatare. For the main meal you have to decide how many kgs of the meat you are going to eat. 700-1kg to be shared. They also have smaller steaks for individual order, and pastas. Love the desserts too. It is true about being a bit pricey, but the food quality is great!

I was left with mixed feelings leaving the restaurant .. the food was good, but the service was bad! It was the general manager that fixed the situation by being really kind and apologies for the slow service. We waited for 30 minutes to get a bottle of water and order our dinner. The meat was good, but the cost was unjustified given the delay. What annoyed me was a lady that was working there and we asked her nicely to bring her the bottle of water and her reply was 'I am sorry, I am not a waitress'. In the end, we ARE the clients, no matter your position you need to act with professional attitude and provide great service. Overall would give 3 stars but for the nice GM I will rate it as 4. Avoid peak hours. ..

This place came back in a Google search for 'Best steak near me'. We arrived and it looked a little run down and quite odd with someone smoking, sat on a large red sofa, outside. Turns out it's an Italian place. Steak, Italian?? Oh well, we though we'd give it a go.
We were blown away by the AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!
Local Italians come here to get the beef cuts, they cut their meat as they go with a guy wealding a meat cleaver in the front mini butchers. It was super clean and tidy.
The staff were all authentic Italians, passionate and the service, conversation, attention to detail and friendliness was second to none.
This has to be one of the best dining experiences I've had ever. Rustic, fresh, fantastic!
Then there's the food and wine. Fairly pricey but you are getting an out of this world dining delight.
We started with beef tartare and testicles. (See photos) An adventure quest but super tasty. Then a choice of steak, we went for 850g of T-bone.
Then multi aged cheese.
My children had pasta and loved it!! All gone.
All in all a fantastic place. Fantastic food. Fantastic people. The manager, Frederico and the tall young lady. AMAZING!!

All the meat cuts are from Fassona cow from Piedmont (Italy).
The menu is really interesting and the staff is more than helpful in explaining the different cut and their characteristics.
The wine list is interesting, even if definitely on the expensive side.
Overall I really enjoyed the food, the atmosphere (very italian), but in general I find it overpriced, I guess is London though.

The meat is cut according to the size and type of quality required, in front of the customer before being sent to the kitchen for the desired cooking. Excellent starters of raw meat and a wide selection of Italian wines. the slightly elevated price is largely justified, both for the quality and freshness of the products. The staff, the cooks and the butcher who prepares the meat have a great professionalism and competence. I highly recommend it for those who want to eat excellent Italian meat. Walking past on a Tuesdays night my girlfriend and I popped in on the off chance there was a table. Only space was by the butchers counter which turned out to be the best seat in the house... Ilario the butcher, and Francesco our waiter looked after us all evening and served us one of the best cuts I’ve ever had . So if you are in S Ken visiting the museums or local and walked past many times and wondered if it’s any good, I highly recommend visiting, but probably best you book..!

Must visit! Best place in London for beef! Amazing food and wine with a relaxed and kind service. Its pricey, but definitely worth every penny. I recommend starting with the Battuta all’albese and Misto Imperiale; for mains the signature is the Fiorentina, and if there are 4+ get the Costata too; to close on a high, the Bianco al Basilico. Wines are all excellent, I have a soft spot for the Bansella. The meat is all from Fassona cows, which is the leanest beef you can find and very flavourfull. The olive oil is excellent quality and well suited to the meat, so no need for sauces! A very special thanks to Federico and his amazing team!

A beautiful red leather sofa was sitting outside near the sidewalk (quite the eye-catcher), inviting our curiosity as to what Macellaio was all about. We were so impressed with the quality of meat, festival of flavors and exceptional service, we visited twice before leaving London. The second visit was not out-shadowed by the first, confirming this is truly an exceptional destination.

Always been going back to Macellaio RC for their lovely steaks! Great services and staff were attentive but slightly too rushy. We had steak carpaccio and beef tongue for starters, the steak carppacio totally took me by surprise. Unlike the conventional carpaccio dish, the beef slices were quite thick, so not really a carpaccio. It was fine as the beef tasted fresh. Beef tongue was cooked nicely. For mains, we had the T-bone steak and it was perfectly cooked. Meat was tender and juicy. You can see how they cut the meat at the meat counter. Desserts were beyond expectation, basil cream panna cotta was amazing and tiramisu was great! Perfect way to end the meal!

A cool Italian steak restaurant. You walk through the butchery area to the main dining room. Staff were very welcoming and explained in detail the cuts of meat available which are unique to Italian steak. The re are a range of starters including offal and ofcourse the steak was fantastic. This is definitely one of my favourite Italian meat restaurants in London. Having the butcher cutting and slicing meat at the very entrance of the restaurants reminds me of the local butcher I used to go when I lived in my hometown back in Italy. The menu is pretty straight forward. If you come here is because you like meat. (Sorry vegan/vegetarian friends) the only vegan-friendly dish is Pasta with Pomodoro (tomato sauce). Try the Fiorentina or the costata. Portions are quite filling, so I’d suggest you to share with one or two more people. Side dish are simple but tasty. So are the starters. They have a good selection of wines and spirits. Desserts are also very original and definitely Italian. Book in advance if you can as the place is quite small and always busy, even during the week. Friendly staff.

Dining alone on a workday can be a challenge. i chose to return to M_RC simply because I wanted steak perfection in a very relaxed setting. Since it's a busy weekend there wasn't a regular table, but there was a little hidden, private single table directly across from the meat cooler and prep station where one can watch all-things-meat being created. A simple dinner of wine, a starter and some beef was my focus - and relaxing service. I was not disappointed.
The prosciutto and burrata were amazing, as was the generous 621gm costata - done very rare. A Barolo to pair with the wonderfully Italian meat was Mauro's suggestion - and paired perfectly. This young man knows service; can read his clients; understands wine, and; is a genuinely godo representative of Macellaio RC South Ken.

We had the rib eye, medium rare, and it was delicious. You can really taste the flavours developing after the ageing process. The meat was perfectly cooked and it went very nicely with sides fennel salad and chips. For dessert, we had the basil panna cotta and the tiramisu--both delicious as well! yesterday I was here to celebrate my birthday and was one of my best birthday party. my friends and I are happy for the service because they made us feel at home. Anytime we wanted to order a new drink the waitress was there, we were 3 tables and food arrived at the same time. Literally meaning "butcher" in Italian, this place is definitely one for meat lovers! In addition to chunks of meat, there are also some more interesting options, such as offal. The wine list includes some regional specialities from Italy and you get a knowledgeable sommelier to guide you through. However, the price will be prohibitively extortionate for some, particularly once you add in the wine; my friends and I ended up spending £96 each. Furthermore, the first round of steak (yes, we were pies and had two rounds!), did not melt in the mouth in the same way as the second. It was a good experience, but on balance, I won't be going back.

A bit pricey, but fairly decent steaks. Interesting vibe and decor, makes for a good and fun meal if sharing with friends. Wouldn't eat anything other than the steaks though - the other items are fine but nothing to write home about.
Service was OK, booked a table in advance for my birthday but the booking was lost due to a technical glitch on their end. I showed them proof and so they did their best to fit us in, although we had to wait around for quite a while. To be fair they were helpful and apologised - but tbh I expected more due to the stress and inconvenience caused, and didn't want to make a big deal out of it. If booking, I would advise calling then directly rather than using their glitchy online booking (quandoo).
Overall though, I much prefer Hawksmoor for steaks, probably my favourite in London. Goodman is decent too. Macellaio RC would be 3rd in my list.

Excellent service, produce, dishes, drinks and atmosphere 👌 such good steaks I had a hard time picking out which one to have. The waiter was so nice and even put a show for everyone when serving the main dish (I believe his name was Federico) the owner was also there and gave us excellent wine recommendations. The restaurant is on the expensive side and I didn't think that it really deserved it. People who are familiar with dry aged steaks know that once the steak is dry aged the outside layer which becomes very hard needs to be removed as it's not pleasant to eat. This restaurant didn't really take off enough of the outer layer leaving the steaks with a noticable hard layer on the outside of the steaks. I think if they trimmed the steaks better I would be more inclined to give them a better rating.

I’ve been wanting to go here each time I’ve visited London. Each time there have been no tables available. I highly recommend getting a reservation.
I went to the Kensington location last night and again, no tables. However the staff was super helpful in calling ahead to the battersea location to ensure I could get a table. They even went as far as calling and paying for an Uber for me to get there.
The food was excellent. The beef was tender and flavorful. The pricing was reasonable considering the quality and amount of weight beef loses through the aging process. All of the food is very simple but very well done (rare).
I can’t say enough about the staff at each location. They were awesome despite being as busy as they were. The food and the staff made for a special experience. I will surely be going here again

Completely out of this world. The top restaurant for meat. We have had so many special moments here and go as often as we can. The staff really go above and beyond to make you happy. Great wine.
The bone marrow here is mouthwatering and the apple dessert was my absolute favourite, unfortunately no longer on the menu. Nevertheless, the meat here is divine and the surprise they give you when they bring out the knives is entertaining in so many ways. I could go on and on about how fantastic this place is but bottom line, if you’re after phenomenal meat, Maccellaio is the place to be.

Definitely up there. The waiter recommended a t-bone, a beef rib and 4 sides for our party of 4 people. The side dishes were very small and we could have easily done with the same again. However the main event was the beef and these were 2 absolutely immense pieces of meat. It was clear from the taste and melt-in-the-mouth texture that they had received a lot of love and care on their journey from field to plate. Top marks for chef, it was cooked beautifully.

This place is interesting because it brought the phenomenal fassone beef from Piedmont to London. It is a type of beef which is very lean and low on cholesterol but extremely tasty at the same time.
Update of May 7, 2019. I just visited the place again and I found the beef still very good and some waiters pretty attentive. What surprised me a bit was that the restaurant management seems not interested in developing relationships and nurturing its long-dated customers (I probably went there 15 times but no recognition, pretty bad table etc) . So overall good food but more likely worth a one-off visit rather then becoming a repeat client. Hence my 1-notch downgrade.

I had been there one year ago just before Christmas. That was an awesome tasting experience with a perfect atmosphere.
I have been waiting for so long to come back but this time it was (almost) a disaster.
The young waiters stood out with courtesy but the manager ( or someone who look to be the boss) took our order one second after we sat down at the table. He didn’t mention the wine and ran away with the order asking us to take our time to chose the wine. Normally they should advice the costumer and introduce their best bottles. So the food and the wine arrived together, no time for tasting a pre-dinner glass of wine. The pasta was good but obviously microwaved ( it arrived in just few minutes after ordering and super hot -microwave kind of heat) and the starter (heart) that he pushed me to order was served as main.
A big mess. 40’ in total for an experience that I had been waiting for for ages.luckily the bill was ok. I have been recommending this place to everyone. I’ll stop.sorry.

It was really good here, although it's rather different from the one I'm used to in Paris, with sauce mixed in and egg yolk added. Here just simply meat standing out with other seasonings underneath. Few London steakhouses do steak exceptionally well. Even fewer steakhouses do exceptional steak at exceptional value... Macelliao RC is one of them and deserving of its 5 stars. I must admit that the hanging pieces of meat on the window shopfront and the old red leather sofa outside is rather misleading as inside you will find details the warm atmosphere of the vibrant staff and stylised wooden decor a complete surprise.
Meat is what they do well and the non-milking, twice-aged beef needs no further selling. Succulent and delicious, make sure you go by the server's recommendation of cooking to the right finish for the specific type of cut. My favourite is the costata which I order every time I visit. If you know of any other keen meat eaters, bring your friends before it becomes mainstream, I hear they are expanding which I hope won't cause it to lose some of its local charm.

Been to Maxela the other night with my brother. Expectations were set quite high.
Overall, I must give it 5.5 out of 10. Why? The cooked our 1.5KG prime cut Fiorentina completely wrong, served it cold, re-heated it after a complaint and served it again well over well done.
Pity because there's a lot of pros to this restaurant:
- the quality of the meat is absolutely top notch
- the butcher / head chef is incredibly friendly and wil cut the steak you want from the piece you choose on the spot. You can see he loves what he does.
- wine selection is limited but well though over. We enjoyed a nice glass of Primitivo with our -ehm- steak.
- they did give us a discount for cooking the steak wrong.
I am not sure whether I will give it another shot, but I might go there to buy some meat and cook it at home..!

Went to Maxela first time with my girlfriend about a month ago and after that time started being a regular customer at this amazing restaurant.
I now pretty much go there on every possible occasion.
The atmosphere is really cozy and the staff of the restaurant is increadibly friendly and kind.
The quality of the meat is just amazing, top tier farm grown italian meat from Piemonte (the famous Fassona quality) and cooked to the state of art mediterranean style: simple and tasty because the taste of the meat is so good that it would be a shame to cover it with unnecessary dressing or buttery sauces.
The pasta is perfectly "al dente" and the pesto sauce is my favourite.
In conclusion, a MUST GO.

Maxela, "The Italian Butchery with Tables", is a little steakhouse not far from South Kensington station in South West London. Since the tube strikes in early 2014, I began walking to work about once a week. And on the way, I often walked past Maxela - it looked like a nice place, but it took me a few months to make it there for dinner.
It is a little bit embarrassing, but at first I missed Maxela by one door and went into the neighbouring restaurant. Not a bad place either, but as soon as I noticed it, I decided to get a starter and then make a move. On my second attempt, I walked through the right door.
From the outside, Maxela looks a bit like a butcher shop, and initially I thought this is a deli and the restaurant is next door. But do not let the meat on display fool you, behind the door is a lovely little steakhouse, not just a butcher shop.
Immediately, I was approached by a very friendly waitress with a beautiful smile. She almost had to send me away because they were quite busy, but I guess after I made a sad face, she gave the restaurant a second look and found me a place. I had to share the table with a Canadian guy and a couple, but that was perfectly fine, and now I think sharing a table matches the overall atmosphere of this tiny meat paradise very well.
I skipped the starters and went straight into the main menu. Many dishes sounded delicious and it was difficult to decide, but at the end I went with a sliced Fassone beef steak with caramelised pears and aged balsamic vinegar. I combined the steak with a fruity red Montepulciano and french fries.
Not long after I ordered, a waiter brought my food. It looked beautiful. The french fries were salty, dark and crispy, I think skin-on. No question, the star of the evening was the heavenly Fassone beef steak. It was cooked medium-rare and spiced perfectly. The steak was full of flavour and I really liked the combination with caramelised pears, which were a nice contrast to the steak and added a light freshness to the dish.
After finishing my steak, I ordered "latte dolce fritto" or "fried sweet milk". To be honest, I had no idea what this meant, but when the waitress recommended it with her winning smile, I could not resist - and I did not regret this decision. The dessert was delicious, yet not very heavy and some of the fritters were even filled with Nutella.
Overall, I think Maxela is undoubtedly one of the best steakhouses in London. The place has a great, relaxed, friendly and personal atmosphere. At the counter right next to the entrance you can see how the meat is cut, which just adds to the excitement. Maxela feels like a honest and authentic restaurant, and most importantly, the steak tastes excellent. I cannot recommend Maxela in South Kensington highly enough.
