Reviews of Bacchus Bar
M. D.
Really interesting/nice place with some cool decor. Lovely servers who were fast and attentive.
We went for a Sunday roast and were left a little underwhelmed. I never like being too critical having worked in restaurants myself but the beef was rather over-done and dry, parsnips were a bit under and generally the dish/gravy didn’t have much flavour. Had to save it with a lot of additional salt/pepper/horse radish.
When you go for a roast you want to be blown away with a hearty meal and unfortunately this wasn’t quite it.

Ordered the brisket burger which was absolutely delicious, though I wish there was more brisket on it however. The decor is stunning very different and very artistic. Will for sure be returning and I’ll bring my friends
E. B.
Really quirky bar, great place to go if you're looking for a drink somewhere a bit different. Front door was smashed and some of the decorations were a bit shabby. Staff were friendly and attentive.
H. P. (.
three plates just enough for five people :)
Usually not a big fan of black beer, but the Plum Porter which I tasted was amazing (yes they let you taste the draft beer before you decide which to order)
P. T.
In the Burlington Arcade, the entrance looks strange but don't be put off, down the stairs is a large venue decorated in the Bacchus theme ancient Rome/Greece and a bit of Egyptian. Very over the top but very interesting. We'll worth a visit.
P. F.
Great venue right in the centre of Birmingham a few minutes from New Street Station and The Bull Ring. Very accommodating staff and reasonable quality food (Burger excellent but chips a bit cold - I was very hungry so I ate them just the same). The space is brilliantly decorated with all sorts of different alcoves and arches.
T. D.
The place itself was beautiful, warm and charming. I had very good company. The menu looked good. The waitress was nice. However, she gave us a very long list of things they were out of, to include steak and Sunday roast. Very sad. I tried the Toad in the Hole. It was good and the veggies were okay. The brownie was literally burnt on the edge and I could smell it when it came to the table. And goodness, just because you order for a child, don't act like one when you make the plate. I fixed the plate before presenting it to my son. Not impressed with this place.
M. C.
Such a lovely bar, decorated beautifully. It's dark and cosy. The staff are such a delight, and friendly and the kitchen staff amazing.
I came with my partner for food and drinks, and the burgers we had were the best burgers we have ever had, the only downside was that I was too full to have my plate completely clean! I cannot wait to go back, we hadn't even left and I already couldn't wait to go back. Next time we plan to have desserts, and try more of the menu.
S. K.
Great little bar and restaurant didn't eat there but went for a drink. The details on the walls and ceiling are amazing to look at and so much detail on each piece that's there.
The only thing I found though was there was no mobile phone signal when you are in there as you are 'underground' (stairs going down from street height).
J. O.
Beautiful basement bar with lots of small seating areas.
M. S.
Been going to the great Bacchus for more than 25 years - sheesh! - and although nowhere near as often as I used to visit back in the day, still nice to pop in for a long overdue visit. Still very chilled, underground bar which is directly beneath the Burlington Hotel. Lots of good drink options and they also serve a decent range of food choices. Perhaps not quite the showstopper it used to be - they really need to sort out the front door which looks fit to shatter - but I'll always have a place in my heart for Bacchus.
M. A.
Amazing bar. Real hidden gem of Brum! Friendly staff and comfy seats.
T. B.
Love, love, love the Bacchus Bar. Quirkily decorated, it's truly a one off. Plenty of quiet spaces and it's well worth seeking out.
E. D.
After a great visit the previous week for lunch, me and my partner decided to book for a celebratory meal together.
From greeting to exit, the staff were warm, welcoming and friendly. We were given choice of where to sit and were even allowed to sit in an area used for private functions.
We were given the choice to order via the app or directly through a staff member. We ordered a couple of the draught ciders which arrived instantly and were yummy!
For food we shared a seafood platter starter which was absolutely gorgeous. Perfect for two people and outstanding quality. For mains, I had the salmon fillet (they say fillet but wow, I felt spoilt like I got the entire salmon!) and my partner had a med rare steak. Both were amazingly good and it's clear the kitchen use fresh products and take care in delivering high quality meals.
Prices were really good for such amazing quality, service and surroundings. Can't wait for our next visit!
M. K.
Perfect place to just unwind, music is perfect the waiters are spot on. You could really ask for anywhere better if you just want to unwind..
C. F.
Really quirky underground bar, which I really loved!
Didn’t get a chance to fully appreciate this bar (or its extensive gin collection) as I had to dash off and catch my train. But I’ll be sure to visit this place again when visiting Birmingham.
S. R.
A very cosy and personable bar...
The atmosphere takes much from the ame and decor, i always feel like I'm having an affair - and i only go there with the wife!
The staff are friendly and helpful.
Their calm attitude pervades the place
T. K.
I had a pint with some nuts. Service was ok. I give it high points for the medieval feel and ambience
A. M.
Outstanding quirky underground pub. Medieval, Egyptian, Georgian drawing room, gothic crypt.... every corner has a different theme. And great ales!
Not cheap, but worth it!
S. M.
Bacchus Bar has a great atmosphere, unusual decor, lots of space. They serve a wide variety of beers, wines & spirits. The food is good.
L. M.
Really like it here. Only 3 stars because our food was not warm enough and staff kept coming to the table to take things away as soon as you put them down. Distracting when having a conversation with your daughter
B.
Quirky place, lots of nooks and crannies to hide in for quiet chats or cosy meetings. Expensive drinks. Beer pumps very difficult to read due to poor lighting. Toilets clean and well lit.
W. R.
Nice, hidden bar in the centre of Birmingham. Nicely decorated and comfortable. Prices are verging on the ridiculous, though - £9.50 for a double rum and coke is frankly disgraceful.
J. D. R.
Great Bar lovely atmosphere. Great food. Enjoyed my visit here. Highly recommended.
K. M.
Lovely place to eat and drink in the centre of Birmingham. Reserving a table for food is highly recommended as it gets so busy but it isn’t always possible to reserve a table. Yesterday we were told that we couldn’t due to how busy it was so we’d have to chance it when we wanted to eat. When we came back at 6.45 there were 2 tables with reserved on them.
I. N.
Absolutely delightful, amazing place,great staff,gorgeous food,its a winner⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
C. T.
Excellent bar and restaurant in the Nicholson chain. It's an excellent theme and well decorated. The atmosphere stylish and relaxed and doesn't feel like a typical pub. The staff are excellent and the food and drink is first class. Highly recommended 👍
T. L.
A lovely bar. Superb service and my favourite beers are available. Unique atmosphere - the same for years. I love it!
J. P.
We had a meal here on Xmas eve and had an amazing time. Half of the menu had run out and had to be substituted but still had a fantastic time because of our server Steve. Both him and the chef both clearly deserve a raise and a pat on the back from the management, we felt really looked after...thanks and we'll definitely come again 😊
P. C.
Amazing place with stunning food and reasonable prices. Centre of Birmingham and hidden away under the Burlington Arcade. This doesn't mean its quiet though. You can always tell a good place when they're still very busy even after all these years with all the competition around. Well done to the manager and all staff.
D. P.
Great venue, lovely friendly atmosphere as soon as you walk in, really large bar area with lots of little alcoves and tucked away places to sit. We ate here too and the dining area in in a separate part, equally lovely atmosphere and the service and food was faultless. So glad I found this gem that is literally opposite new street station.
J.
Bacchus bar. Where to begin. It began on a Thursday night out with the Mrs on Christmas Eve Eve.
The food was bang on, the beer selection was also bang on. Plum Porter? In a cosy bar in December? Call me old, but damn that's one hell of a good night to me.
Our server, Steve. Well... What a man. Incredibly hospitable, one of those all round 'nice guys' you know? he's the god damn man. They don't make em like Steve anymore that's for sure.
Would 10/10 recommend anyone to visit Bacchus Bar purely on Steve's own merit.
(FYI I'm not in cahoots with Steve, he genuinely is a very nice bloke and made us feel very welcome. I just take my reviews very seriously).
M. U.
Fantastic building, kind of hidden, but not. Standard ales, nothing special. Visit for the ambiance, not the ale. Disappointed. Sorry Bacchus! Wainwright and Doombar just doesn't cut it! Nicholsons need to step up and refresh!
Addition: Thank you to Grace for replying. I have upped the stars to 4. I appreciate your feedback and look forward to returning to Birmingham again to see what else you have on tap. 👍🏻
J. L.
a group of us celebrating colleague. wonderfully quirky atmosphere, underground, great decor almost gothic... corners , nooks and crannies. very friendly staff. love it
L. F.
Been popping in here for years, and today met a friend and after two drinks we were so cold in there we had to leave and move onto another place.
Aside this had a lovely Rhubarb and Apple Gin, no fear of the ice melting.
M. A.
I love this bar, it's so whimsical, I finally managed to get into the Egyptian room which is stunning. I personally love this bar, you can never go wrong with a Nicholsons pub, the foods lovely, though I only had dessert this time round. You do need forget your timing right however because this pub can get BUSY and I mean busy! I went at around 2, and there was hardly anyone there, out of the multiple times I've been, this was the first for it to be so quiet! Well worth a visit if your visiting good pubs of bham
S. S.
Staff were slow - place is beautiful tho and if you Download the Nicholson’s app you can get a gin and tonic or a real cask ale for just £1 - like this if you have saved some pennies
S. T.
The bar is really cozy and worth to visit.
D. L.
We have been having drinks and meals at Bacchus bar for many years. Never had a bad meal, sometimes had a few too many scoops, but why wouldn't you in this outstanding venue.
F. R.
Very nice pub great atmosphere really good food very helpful staff we didn't book a table but asked anyway could of easily turned us away but the lady said as long as your gone in 2hrs I can let you have a table as we have a booking on it cant recommend high enough
M. O.
Been here twice and on each occasion, the meal was great and the staff, courteous personified. And the location, really interesting 😀
A. C.
A real hidden treasure medieval themed bar in the middle of Birmingham, the artwork is mesmerising and there are lots of gins to try, I also had a Sticky Toffee Pudding. A must see!
M. B.
Visited yesterday with my nephew, lovely bar with a nice relaxed atmosphere. Great selection of draught drinks.
N. T.
Great beer and spirits in here, served by friendly staff. Access is via the arcade underneath the McDonald House hotel just outside New Street Station. Entrance is down the spiral staircase. Lots of areas to go in to a group. Food here also. Great themes to the bar. Excellent staff, super friendly and helpful.
L. C.
Love love love this bar. It's cool and quirky. It's worth the little extra you pay. You pay for quality and service. It's my favourite place to go. If you haven't visited, then you really need to!
N. W.
What a place! Great selection of food and drinks all served up in a cosy environment. The decor is increadible, the best word to describe it is ' opulent'. There are Roman columns, busts and stonework. Then there is Egyptian sphinx heads and gothic gates and railings. It's like you have entered another world. Very well designed and the prices are not so bad when considering where you are. Also, so close to the new Street station exit that it would be rude not to... Great way to start your night.
m. j.
Great decor, good atmosphere, very decadent. Beers good.
L. R.
Beautiful place in Birmingan nice beer and nice service, 👍👍👍👍
N. T.
It's absolutely fantastic place! Beautiful interior, friendly staff, good selection of drinks.
P. Y.
Just love the ambiance of this place, great selection of ales available and the decor is very atmospheric.. 👍
D. W.
Fabulous cosy place, friendly staff but ordered belly pork & was minute 3 slivers of meat . Waitress did offer extra chips or veg but chef needs to upgrade this meal option. Rest of group had fab generous portions. Still enjoyed.
D. S.
This place is great, really unexpected interior, like a castle inside and the food was fantastic
J. A.
Love popping in here for a swifty before catching a train from New Street, it's right opposite! Great selection of guest Ales, Lagers and Cider.
Decided to try the food on my last visit... Was not disappointed - I had the pulled lamb hot pot pie, absolutely stunning. I can imagine this would be spot on during the colder weather, after a day shopping in Bull Ring!
Place has a great atmosphere, it's pretty quiet most times I've been in, never too busy and the service has always been fantastic. Very friendly bar and waiting staff. Can't will till my next visit! 😊
E. H.
Great atmosphere, lovely quiet bar to have a chat and a catch up.
M. K.
This place is like a hidden gem. The interior is fancy, ample seating spaces and a good variety of drinks.
K. A.
Popped in before we went to the Hippodrome, we had 2 pots of tea and 2 bacon baps, very nice too, staff were very friendly and helpful worth a visit.
R. W.
Mucked my order up (just two drinks) but pleasant enough place.
S.
Great experience. Lovely "feature" pub. Good choice of ales/wines. Had a couple of meals to round off the evening. Steak and ale pie with veg 👍 and my wife had Lentil Cottage Pie. Beautiful. "Home made" Great flavours, Great price, Great Service - Sarah and Steve. Thank You 👏👏
R. H.
Beautiful place. Friendly staff. Decent food and drink.
Y. D.
Came for a few drinks with my friend and had a lovely time, as well as the food being great. I was served by Grace at the bar and she really added to the great experience, and was overall lovely.
Will be coming here again !
T. G. N.
Love the decor ( slightly tacky or not , who cares ? at least it's a talking point ! ) The drinks are always good , unfortunately I haven't eaten here so can't comment on the food . Excellent service too by the way 👍
n. A.
Fantastic food, lovely staff would definitely come again
T. S.
Great quirky underground (literally) bar. Massive selection of gins and ales if you want something unusual. Staff are always helpful and speedy.
M. S.
Great atmosphere. Staff are fantastic and the choice of food and drinks are amazing
R. C.
Great bar and atmosphere, a must visit if you're in the city
A. H.
Good food friendly staff we had Steve serve us nothing was to much trouble.will go again.
B. O.
It's a Nicholson's pub, quite easy to miss (you need to duck under an archway with a doorway somewhat hidden to the side that drops you down a staircase to a cellar dwelling.
Met up with some family friends for dinner who recommended this place; we were shown to a table deep inside the premises and decided to opt for pies. The meal was good, beer fine (a mixture of Nicholson's own and some other guest beers) and service excellent. I decided to try a pudding, cheesecake with a generous dollop of cream.
The total bill for 4 people for meals plus plenty of beers came to under £100 - excellent value for what we had. Will definitely return if I'm in the area.
S. H.
Brilliant atmosphere and beautiful decor. Staff can be a little unprofessional at times though.
J. S. O.
A real hidden gem of a pub with real character. Lots of separate room with a proper intimate feel. Loved it!
S. M.
Enjoyed it, like the vibe. The staff were really friendly
S. P.
There's a lot to like about this place, a central location right by New Street Station and one of the most impressive entrances to a bar I've ever seen! Decent enough choice of ales. Lively crowd. Worth a visit.
W. D.
Such a great place hidden away in Brum, always a favourite stop off on a night out!
B. D.
Already a firm favourite when visiting Brum, lovely relaxed and cosy atmosphere when we visited on a Thursday night.
L. F.
Had a wonderful.time here with my bestie, atmosphere was great and the service, had a blast!!!
D.
Nice restaurant that's very close to New Street Station. Very good service
A. N.
Bit dark and dindgy. Beer ok but there are far better pubs in Brum to try first
M. M.
Service was great food was average. Nice cozy place to go for a couple drinks with family and friends.
D.
Liked it , a cellar bar similar to what you find in Europe ...a selection of good ales ..
L. H.
This is one of Birmingham city centre's best hidden gems and probably my favourite place to drink in the city.
It's tucked away under the Burlington hotel on new street so it's right next to Grand Central station.
Unique décor that makes you want to show a friend and good beer (I recommend the Pilsner Urquell) you can't help but feel that you have been transported to a bar in Prague's old town (unfortunately it's not priced like Prague)
They also do a good variety of whiskys and gins
C.
Quirky pub, close to the station with good beer.... What more does one need?
D. M.
Really nice place. Really nice themes and atmosphere.
If the crowded, noisy bar/club is not for you then you'll find here adequate for a drink.
Friendly staff and good prices.
Highly recommend.
d. c.
Lovely bar, craft beer, friendly, welcoming staff
F. F. F.
Lovely pub, good beer choices, really liked it :)
D. V.
Reasonable prices and a good selection of fish dishes. Picture shows a crab burger. Which was ok, but not huge.
A. T.
Nice atmosphere nice snacks and service. Highly recommended 🤙
T. M.
Very unique (possibly tacky in places?) but likeable interior. Decent service and tasty food. Limited for seating in an evening as they close off another section.
S. B.
What a gem, used to go in here in the 1980s and forgot about it until a friend said I should try it out, great choice of ales and good food at a reasonable price ..!
M. R.
Worth visiting. Keep in mind restaurant and bar area are kind of separate .
A. A.
Visited on a Saturday night. Really wanted to return to this place, due to the experience staying with me from previous.
Quirky decor, something diffeent from your bog standard pub. A nice choice of different ales/beers on tap too, can't comment on bottle selection however. The table next to us had food, which looked of a good standard.
If you're looking for somewhere a little difrrent to your normal 'wetherspoon' type pubs, give this a try! Although you may not be able to find this immediately, as it is situated below a hotel.
L. S.
Very busy but lovely bar to visit at any time of day.
S. R.
Lovely little bar, dead centre of Brum, good choice of ales and Gin
J. L.
Really nice place to eat, service is always good. Staff are really lovely; food and drinks come out at a decent time. It can get quite busy depending on when you go, so it can be a bit annoying walking through people just to get to the dining area. Just hate how there's barely any phone signal.
S.
Nice place, good food. Bit different. Staff are friendly and helpful. Bar can get busy but not a problem. Give it a try if your in Birmingham.
P. D.
Eccentric and wonderful. Food was well cooked and presented.
F. N.
Very nice place! Excellent service and food! Also very good wine.
R. W.
Great atmosphere, great beer selection also..
R. J. B.
Fantastic service and also fast at the Bar! Would recommend this to anyone who likes a very old Pub with A LOT of character.
P. C.
Love this place with my girlfriend.. it's our special place.
p. t.
Popped in for drinks while at the Christmas Market . Great place , just need to know where to find it 😂
B. R.
Lovely place. But little dear for drinks. Always go back because when you go on their it's like a different world 🙂🥳
j. b.
Unique bar worth popping into for a pint or three
T. J.
Great ambiance, interesting decor, good choice of drinks, happy and friendly staff. Love it here.
N. C.
Great place to snug up in the winter with a pint.
B. K.
It was OK we just went for a drink. But concerned that we were sat at a table right by steps. And our chairs where right by the steps and I could have fallen down them. I know it seems a strange review but am 7 months pregnant and could have lost my baby. We just left without ordering.Just abit more care by staff members needed
D. H.
Great atmosphere, good beer, great theme bar. Brilliant place to go
M. R.
I totally love this Bar, ok I had a bit of trouble finding it and literally stumbled over it. And you will have no phone signal or wi-fi but thats not such a bad thing these day.
Its quirky, the staff are pleasant and the food although not cordon bleau is reasonably priced. When next I visit Birmingham this will be first port of call.
K. M.
Lovely atmosphere, good service, but they had all of two ciders on tap.
A. D.
The snacks are great. The place is quite lovely, the medieval style is nice, the opaque lights give it a nice touch. Staff are friendly, toilets are alright. Good beer options. There is no phone signal since it is underground. The tables are at a proper distance from one another which gives good privacy to people in every table.
J. W.
1st time visiting there today and cant wait to return..surroundings and decor were amazing..nice clientele and food was lovely..grt service too. Fabulous place!
P. B.
A good range of beers, helpful staff. Cider wasn't quiet as described. Atmosphere was good.
I. S.
Quirky and different, good beer and nice food selection.
g.
I came here yesterday after a recommendation.
I was in absolute awe! Yes, the drinks were a little bit pricey but the atmosphere was incredible and the prices were understood due to where the pub is located. We didn't eat but I have definitely added it to my list of places to go for when me and my boyfriend want a date night!
The bar man was extremely friendly. Will definitely return!
J. C.
Awesome place with medieval vibe. Great atmosphere and menu looked great
P. G.
Fabulous surroundings, delightful atmosphere and people.
M. R.
It's a cozy pub. Good for relaxing and chatting with mates. The music is playing, but it isn't overbearing.
B. G.
Beautiful room...hidden theatre..bit noisy for those who can't take loudness, food great..
V. W.
Nice place, looking its age now though
J. W.
Meal was excellant. Compliments to Chef and waitress.
W.
I love this little gem of a place. It's more of a winter venue but the decór is amazing and there is such a magical energy and atmosphere. They even have fantastic vegan food on the menu and live music sometimes. It's always going to be somewhere I'm excited to visit and show people and it's especially funky if you get the table which is basically in a tomb!! 😊
R. H.
A completely different bar experience and very enjoyable
C. K.
Such a nice bar! A very unique style and an excellent experience in general
C. H.
Great time had at the Bacchus Bar served by the beautiful Grace food really good and lovely atmosphere
M. O.
The place is very nice, very cosy and cheerful. there's a good atmosphere. But more importantly the staff, Hannah Brendan, Kai, they are amazing. extremely welcoming and professional, kind and went the extra mile for us. Can't be grateful enough. 5/5 stars for them. Food is very nice too! My soup was delicious. Kudos to the Chef
R. W.
Great find and good atmosphere. Will.be back
S. S.
Such a beautiful place. The interior was amazing with its arches and secluded alcoves. Brilliant for a nice quiet drink after a long day shopping or for a quiet night out. Only downside is location and access. Unless you knew it was there you would walk right past and access is via steps. Didnt see a lift although I'm sure they must have one
Y. D.
Really nice for a quiet drink early evening in week very full at weekends prices reasonable
I.
First time here and it was very nice. Easy to miss the place but once in it's very nice with a good atmosphere.
C. T.
Great fizz Friday and the lunchtime turkey, cranberry and brie toasted sandwich in my favourite Birmingham Nicholsons pub
S. B.
Great place , very chilled
R. P.
Absolutely love this bar always a great atmosphere in my experience. Serving plenty of craft ales amongst all the usual beers and lager. The decor is very unique to say the least but fun nevertheless. The only downside is that it's not the cheapest
W. D.
Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Table service. A shade expensive perhaps but the nicest bar I've found in the centre of Birmingham. A hidden gem.
H. A.
Beer, gins, shorts and naked painted murals. Yeaaaah baby!
P. M.
Visited here yesterday, lovely atmosphere and ambience. Such kind and friendly staff, a special thank you to Ashlee who looked after us with our son who has special needs. Look forward to coming back here again when we are in Birmingham in the future.
M. B.
The atmosphere here is on point, the ideal place to go with friends or your partner for a drink, if you can I'd recommend booking a table as it times it is very busy. The selection of gin is great. Honestly one of the best places in England that I've been for a drink! I will review the food her at a later date 😊
D. W.
Great bar in a good location with a great atmosphere. This bar had been recommended to me so I thought that I would check it out. The bar was extremely busy but one of the staff still managed to find a seat for my mum and me. The staff there were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The quality of the beer we had was exceptional and would recommend this bar to any one visiting Birmingham. There is also a restaurant but on this occasion we did not try the food. I would definitely be coming back.
A. J.
We love this place, feels like you are sat in the belly of Birmingham. A lovely cozy bar, underground. Lovely low lighting, and comfy chairs. Nice staff and nice priced drinks.
G.
I never tire of coming here. So relaxing and the covid restrictions were dealt with superbly by the staff.
C. B.
Great venue that's always highlighted in guides of where to drink in Bham.
Fantastic place to meet up, but be warned, slight lack off phone signal means it's not always easy if people don't know where it is.
But, that being said there's no place quite like Bacchus in Bham - mostly due to fantastic decor - always have a descent selection of beers helps as well!
L. P.
Fab place...if you can get a seat!
D. W.
Love this bar, great selection of drinks. I had sea bass which was really good.
M. P.
Starting with the positives, both the ale and food are good. The surroundings are plesant, and the staff polite. It's always difficult to get a table there even though the restaurant part seems empty, so when we arrived early we were seated almost straight away. After ordering the meal, it took well over 30 minutes for a cold starter to be brought to the table - we needed to ask where it was or might still be waiting now. The main meal arrived promptly after finishing the starter and was good value. Finally the deserts treacle sponge and custard which is possible the nicest I have had, and lemon tart served with sour cream? Even the waitress couldn't understand how they could make that mistake. Still it was sorted quickly. I will probably go back again as the food was good, but next time be more aware of the service.
c. h.
Very unique, with different rooms for seating with different themes (e.g. Medieval)
Great staff, polite and helpful. Really tries to make the visit comfortable. (E.g. There is a lift to get to the seating, in case of a customer being disabled)
Food is great, and some of the food is of a complete different standard. (Extremely good, and way better than expected) huge portions, and a great, varied menu.
All in all, very cool set-up, and great food (at a fairly high price, but definitely worth the money)
T. A.
Always a fun place to dine out. Standard pub F&B. Great atmosphere on Friday night. Very busy. Unusual decor too. Reservations recommended. Private parties can take over a larger than usual space so you've been warned! ;-). Good service and happy waiting staff. Thank you. See you again.

Nice solid place. The decor is very unusual and a great talking point. It's right next to New Street train station, which is mega handy. On the January night I went in, it was rather chilly and drafty. Staff were friendly though and I liked the range of lagers on tap. There's no phone signal as you're underground, which can be a pro or a con depending on how you feel about smartphones!

Beautiful place, ideal location if you're after a drink. Ordered onion rings that come with sour cream. They came super greasy, with no sour cream or napkins or any cutlery. I asked the waiter for the sour cream assuming he had forgotten it. He never returned. When I found him again he told me they had run out of sour cream. Could have told me mate! Glad I didn't order the fish and chips. Might have just got a plate of chips. Very busy but a very chilled and sombre atmosphere. I will go again, just maybe avoid the onion rings. We also ordered the BBQ sausage and chips from the bar snacks menu because the onion rings weren't very appetizing. These were incredible, hot and tasty, would recommend them! #OnionRingGate

Hi, I gave 3 stars based on a couple of observations...firstly quite a few tables needed clearing though I appreciate that at busy times staff are occupied elsewhere. My other minor issue was the wait to be served. However as above the staff were probably busy. Apart from that I was quite happy with what was my first visit. It's good that you look at reviews and seek ways to improve....so on that basis you now have 4 star 😀

Beautiful and unique ambience. Great place for a night out and drinks. Love the Greek Roman vibe and the dimly lit areas! I've heard the food is good there as well, but haven't personally tried it yet!
S. B.
Brilliant. Loved it. Very professional service and the staff couldn't do enough for you

Fair point on not leaving any context about a review from the owner. I was only here for an hour or so and so felt I hadnt experienced everything and so could not comment fully, but on reflection that is a little unfair on any establishment to only say average and so my rating was too low, therefore have changed it from 3 to 4 stars. There was a good selection of real ales and I had a nice quiet hour here or so here. I would go back again!

This is a unique bar which is kind of hidden away. Lovely food, great atmosphere and good beer. We had hunters chicken and fish pie with side of mac n cheese (particularly tasty) great friendly service and if you sign up on the nicholson website you can get 25% off your bill plus a freevtreat on next visit for filling out a survey online

Incredibly cozy atmosphere with great food and a good quality selection of drinks.

Cozy, Lively and wonderful place to meet up with friends. Be aware there is no phone signal as its underground.

Lovely little hideaway with a great atmosphere and eclectic clientele. A good range of reasonably priced wines and ales to suit any taste. Bar staff are polite and helpful. Wheelchair access through a lift

Thought this place was great! Great atmosphere, really impressive interior almost like you stepped into another world. We only had drinks here. Getting a place to sit can be hard when busy
K. S.
One of my favourite places. My friend and I had our Christmas lunch out there. Food, wine and ambiance as spectacular as always. My son in law had his works night out there and said that it was one of the best meals he had ever had.

This is such a great bar. The atmosphere is wonderful. Suits of armour. Booths that make you feel exclusive. In many ways I don't want to say how good it is so that it'll remain a hidden gem.

This restaurant is a welcome change to the fast food chains. It was a good place to meet up with friends, the food and bar snacks were great.
One problem we had was that, because of the location the mobile phone signal is very poor, for O2 phones almost no cover. The restaurant was a little difficult to find and we needed to go outside to contact other members of our party. There may not be much you can do about the mobile signal but a good WiFi signal would help, if there is WiFi available it was not well advertised.

Visited Bacchus Bar after visiting another Nicholson pub (The Punchbowl, York). Delighted and very impressed with everything about Bacchus bar!
Food was excellent quality and quantity. Spent over two hours eating and drinking in the magnificent surroundings. Really liked décor.
Sounds like a cliché, but the staff really were friendly and helpful....top marks to them!
We shall definitely be going back again (as far as I'm concerned, the sooner, the better :)

One of my favourite pubs for a drink in Birmingham. Chilled, comfortable with a brilliant selection of drinks.

I picked the place for first date due to it being close to the Grand Central and not too much of show off. Have to say- it was a perfect choice! Underground setting with candles gives you romantic, mystical atmosphere and you can find a table away from ppl, especially weekdays (when I went). Staff friendly and tactful. Food was delicious and arrived quickly. The only suggestion: please add more Vegetarian and vegan options to your menu. My date also loved the place! We will be coming back!

Lovely atmosphere.. Lovely staff

Nicely tucked away just a five minute walk from New St Station. Wide range of drinks as well as some house specials and unique selections too. Good place to go to get away from your phone as you'll struggle for signal down there!
M. T.
Super quirky place! Medieval and historical themes bar, excellent bar snacks and food. Doom Bar on draught which is always a bonus!

This place is a new discovery for me and I've been going into the City Centre for many years. It's such a quaint little haven in the middle of the bustling busy city. The interior decor does not disappoint, offering so much to peruse whilst you enjoy a variety of food or drink. A very relaxing and classy feel to this little haven.

Convenient locations, loads of seats and a atmospheric decor make this a great pub. The selection of beers was good and varied. Only thing that stops it being five is really snobbery on my part because it's clearly decorated rather and I like my pubs a little more authentic.
D. A.
MacDonald Hotel nice friendly efficient service.

Interesting decor at this underground bar, but beneath it's initial interest, the place seems a bit faded and in need of a make over (decoration / furniture).
Good selection of reasonably priced beers, although bar was understaffed and had to wait a while
P. W.
A stylish underground bar with a great atmosphere, good selection of drinks and great staff. It manages to be cool without being too trendy.
I especially like that most of tables feel like they are in their own space, even when this place gets busy it's easy to feel like you are away from the crowds.

The best environment around!
K. C.
Such a beautiful little bar, always love the atmosphere. The food is always high quality and the drinks service is fast and there is an excellent variety. Lovely place to spend an evening with friends or loved ones.
S. J.
Lovely bar, great choice of drinks and atmosphere is amazing. The only issue I had that prevented a 5 star on this occasion was the service. Seemed a bit lacklustre and was too busy looking around rather than focusing on the customer. No real interaction just took the drink order and gave the drinks. Just looked at us for the order and no verbal interaction at all.
One other thing that would be good is working Wifi, the phone is non-existent and could not connect to any wifi.
Other than that a great bar and would reccomend, just a one off on the service I would think.
C. R.
What a place! I've always had a great time in this interesting vibrant bar, whether I've popped in on the afternoon or gone for a night out and either started/finished the night off here. Very comfortable atmosphere.
Staff are very welcoming and look after the customers. Alot of other places could learn alot about customer focus from the team here. Very professional.
The food here is very good and is a really good price, great value for money in my opinion. The presentation is perfect 👌 There is also a good selection of drink's.
You cannot beat perfection. This is it.
Well done to everyone involved 🙂

Great place to visit in the Burlington Arcade. We enjoyed a couple of bottles of wine with bar snacks. Reasonably priced. We loved the sausage rolls and dirty chips. Lots of draught beers to choose from. Right in the heart of the city off New Street.
C. W.
I love this place, very gothic, it has a dark cosy atmosphere, candles and tea lights all around. It has a good bar and not too expensive. Went for the first time, but I will definitely be going again. Loved it !!👍❤️

A great first bar when your out for the night in Birmingham. Despite being popular it's easy to get served with a great choice of drinks. Friendly staff and plenty of seating with lots of private alcoves.
A. F.
Have been in a few time and yes it's very nice but I find it expensive for drinks, £7.40 for single a tia marie with diet coke & half a cider. I asked the man behind the bar how much the tia maria was he said £4 which is a little high but okay that would make the half a cider £3.40 that's expensive 😮 and expect to stand.
L. J.
Nice little hidden bar outside the busy grand central train station. Found this place by accident and been back many times since. Don't let the busy queues at the bar put you off. Grab a drink and enjoy.
D. F.
Real ale selection has gone downhill with prices at almost £5 a pint. The ale tasting experience was poor. Whilst the two lads from Purity were nice enough, haphazard distribution of samples of only 4 beers with no descriptions.
A. B.
A unique place to meet for a drink and food. It's more bar than eatery but they do have sections set aside for food. Had fish and chips which was perfectly served, hot and crispy. Standard food selection for a chain pub but great for what it is. The decor and location of the bar are what you come here for with reasonably priced drinks and tonnes of atmosphere, good friendly staff and clientele.
T. M.
Been coming here for years, since discovering it on a first date (!). Absolutely love the decor and each time I visit I spot something I hadn't seen before. The suit of armour has lost his head unfortunately!
Prices aren't too bad, and they have a couple of real ales on. Beware you'll get zero mobile signal in here (unless near the door) but sometimes that's a good thing.
My goto bar when in Brum.
M. B.
Very good selection of cask ales at a reasonable price. Located underneath a hotel. Glad I stumbled into it while wondering around. Interesting mix of medieval decor in some areas with other quirky areas as well. Definitely coming back next time I am here!

I used to visit this place often, many moons ago. I had forgotten this place existed to be honest, but popped in here recently with a friend and it is still exactly the same as it was 22 years ago. Lovely place though, good food a nice ale and full of character.
S. B.
Very neat and accessible place. They offer generous meals and for inexpensive prices. We enjoyed the food a lot and the staff were super affable and chatty. Recommended.
N. H.
Very impressive. A warm welcome, fantastic homemade food, wasn't rushed to leave even though they were busy. Would definitely search this place out again next time visiting Birmingham.
J. H.
Spent a couple of hours there with friends on a Saturday afternoon, it could have been the evening, it was packed. That said, we didn't have to wait too long to get served, and managed to get a table. Fabulous atmosphere and a beautiful building, I shall definitely go back if I find myself in Birmingham.

Was looking for a nice drinking environment plus a good whisky selection while I waited for a train. This bar is perfectly located, has a nice interior, friendly staff, and good single malt whisky selection. Will not consider finding elsewhere when I return.

When after work at around 4pm on a Thursday, quiet but not desserted. Would not have found the place without a colleague guiding us through the arcade and down the stairs (not sure whether there is wheelchair access). Good choice of beers and whiskey at prices in keeping with location.
Decor was bold and had a Victorian feel, lots of booth-style seating which gave a cosy, almost 'Gentleman's Club' feeling to it. Apparently popular at weekends which doesn't surprise me.
J. C.
Nice looking. No signal (obviously underground) so would have been better if wifi was readily available.
Also lack of tables for a early Tuesday evening. Although a nice hop and skip to station
B. S.
Love this place! It's very arty and have great selection of gins as well as ales! It's always busy in there so the only bad thing about this place is that you don't always find a sit which isn't really a bad thing, so all good!
J. H.
Waiter Simon has great sense of humour, a sound geezer.
Tasty food small plates.
Guinness was okay, merlot was nice.
Calm pleasant setting for a blessed birthday meal.
Thankyou Bacchus...
God bless you all >>>

Generally a pretty cool place, underground so track of time is easily lost. Couple of rich arses in there last time I visited it, which took the edge off, but generally a nice bar with plenty of beer choices...
K. B.
Good decor, friendly staff and a good selection of food and drink.
Always a decent stop off for a few drinks on a night out, never really rowdy but always a good amount of people around.
T. C.
Visited on a very busy Sat evening before christmas. Bar was extremely busy and nowhere to sit. Drinks were served quickly once we got served but were also quite expensive! Might visit again in future to see how the bar is during a normal weekend.
C. L.
A really cool place to go for a drink and something to eat. Underground bar and restaurant so nothing else really quite like it in Birmingham. Because its underground they keep the air conditioning on so it gets a little cold when seated for a meal so women especially take a top to wear. Excellent choice of draft lagers and the food is of a high quality. It gets really busy so definitely book and be prepared to wait for a pint if you are queuing at the bar. Ill definitely be going again
C. E.
There aren't many pubs in the centre of Birmingham so we were glad to find this one. Staff are friendly, there's a good range of drinks and grub. But no sandwiches at weekends?
A.
Great place for a Friday night pint before getting the train from New Street station just round the corner. Ok selection of ales. Better on the larger. Wine selection was fairly varied and reasonably priced. Gets a little bit crowded especially if you dont bag a booth.
D. R.
One of my absolute favourite bars in Birmingham. A great place to start the evening or enjoy for the duration. Extensive selection of drinks, relaxed atmosphere in an upmarket setting.
J. T.
A real Hidden gem, brilliant chilled atmosphere during the day and early evening
B. S.
A great bar in Birmingham and always has a lovely atmosphere. This place is hidden away but at peak times during weekends and evenings can get very busy so if your planning food and drinks here I would suggest pre-booking.
S. T.
I had never heard of this place before and it was only through the recommendation of a friend that I visited here. It’s a really nice / unique place to go for a drink and they had a very good drinks selection overall. Staff were friendly and efficient and the decor was really nice as well.
R. H.
Favourite bar in birmingham.Good service and range of beers all kept right.very eclectic decor with Roman Egyptian and gothic styling. Reasonably priced quality bar meals although I always seem to pick the steak sandwich- perfect portion to leave room for more beers.
J. D.
Love this place. Great meeting place for my circle of friends as we come from all areas outside of birmingham. Very central and I feel safe as a single woman entering and waiting in my own until my friends arrive
D. H.
Great place to visit and chill with a glass or two of wine. Even better if you are lucky enough to get a booth or a seat as can get really busy. Certainly not a best kept secret!
Food is also really good and quite well priced (compared to the wine).
Strongly recommend a visit..but don't tell anyone!

What a fantastic venue..it's underround and the decor from moment you enter the stairs down into the pub is stunning one of the best looking pubs I've ever been in .
Cask ale was good and decent price seen a lot of food coming out so it's a eating place and a couple we spoke to said they eat there often and food us top class.
One neg is that in parts it's quite dark and you can't read the menu.
But stunning decor we will make this a mit place on future visits
C. O.
Very unusual and quirky place
v.
cosy place with good quality ribeye steak
spend time here with bf and it's been so good bcz the service is kinda perfect
I just hope the dessert we have could be tastier, then that will be totally perfect.
hope staffs here have a good day too, just as our date night xxxx
J. T.
Love the atmosphere and design, great gin selection too. I wish they always had the different garnishes, the past couple of times I have been a they've only had a few different types. I loved having the chilli with my Ophir when I was the a few months ago.
j. b.
Amazing decor, we were really wowed when we entered this kooky pub, however it seemed to be a hot spot for very 'heavy petting' in the darker corners of the pub! Unfortunately, my pint was horrible and my girlfriend had her very mediocre wine served in a very dirty glass! We decided to leave them and go somewhere a little more upmarket!
