Reviews of Malt House

Great Pub! Just visited (22/01/2022) before watching Strictly Live!
Although very busy we had a great meal, great polite/helpful staff.
Would definitely recommend and look forward to returning 👍👍👍👌

Visiting from Dorset. We had an excellent meal. Quick service. Quality. Reasonably priced. Nice clean and tidy pub. Great location on the canal. Live the layout of the pub too. Ale choices were good too. Friendly service. Probably the best pub i have been to this year. Thank you. 5 of us Visited 12/10/2021.

Me and my husband love coming here. We came here when we first started dating so it has some sentimental value to us. We have occasionally dropped by every so often over time. I should have left a glowing review a long time ago. Never to late I guess.
We love the quirky charm of this place, it is an absolute hidden gem.
Service is always 5 star and the staff are all a credit to this Green King Pub.
Thank you for making our date nights special.

Amazing place! Good food, nice staff, good ales. And the setting is fantastic. A must see in Birmingham

The roof terrace overlooking the canals is one of the best locations to drink in Birmingham when it’s sunny. Very cosy well styled interior perfect for the winter. Decent prompt service when we visited. What let it down was the selection and quality of beer available. I had their ice breaker IPA which was very average and at 5.85 I felt was expensive. I’ve had their cask ales previously and never thought they were particularly good, interesting or well kept. I will be back because it’s a cool pub it’s just a shame they can’t improve their beer.

Visited for lunch. Drinks arrived quickly however food took a while to come out.
The food itself was good, and was ok value for money.
S. C.
Lovely pub! Nice atmosphere and good location beside the canal. Great service and tasty food which arrived quickly after ordering. Staff very friendly and helpful with amending our booking and giving us the specific table we asked for. Highly recommended!
V.
Amazing fish and chips, very good service, nice and cozy space inside!
F. F.
Great spot by the canal for a beer. Can get very busy especially of there is a gig on..
C. C.
Brilliant little pub right next to the canal.
Definitely worth a visit.
If you go the right time of year they will have there open fire lit and it is so cosy to sit near there have a drink and something to eat.
I myself have used this pub about 5 times on visiting Birmingham as its a close pub to the arena. Really good food and staff are all very welcoming into the pub.
Prices for food are good as well different days have different deals on or they did when I last went.
A. M.
Lovely setting, had a lovely fish finger sandwich, hubby had a Hunter's chicken toastie, no complaints 😋😋😋
G. M.
Beer was good and they have a good selection, food was OK nothing special. Had the festive burger it was decent but that's about it. Your typical pub grub. Staff table service was poor however. The pub is in a great location and the place is very big so lots of seating
A. W.
Lovely place. Food really nice. Staff really helpful and friendly. Drinks and food good price. And has 50inc TV to wach the football or rugby. Nice family pub. Looking forward to come back again.!!!
B. G.
Brilliant pub with fantastic views sat on the side of the canal. Very nice staff with great range and excellent food. Definitely worth a visit.
Y. M.
Come here whenever we've taken the little one to the Sea Life Centre or the Library. First time having a Sunday dinner and loved it, came out piping hot. Lovely views of the Canal, overall a great pub!

Can't really think of anything bad for this place.
The staff were friendly. The atmosphere is lovely. And I was expecting high prices on the drinks, but they were actually low for Birmingham centre.
The were a few vegetarian options on the menus and gosh they are tasty!!!! There was a lot of sampling of each other's food here because it was just so good!
Enjoy!
C. “. B.
Incredible pub, more than generous portions of delicious food, swiftly prepared. Orders are customisable for allergies / preferences.
The pub is very spacious with lots of tables so no problem for sitting and the interior is really nicely decorated with a rustic effect.
The employees are also really polite and friendly.

Drinks were on point, pints were banging Peter specifically was a very good bar tender sorted me out food was amazing aswell, 10/10 will be back :))

Wow wow wow, whilst wandering around Birmingham looking for a place to eat and drink as we were exhausted, we saw a halo in the distance. This halo, I have come to realise, is the Malt House! It is a beautiful location and a really warm and inviting pub.
The staff are all friendly and lovely and the food was amazing! If you're looking for somewhere to drink and eat, I would advise you visit the Malt House and enjoy the great customer service within.

Recently visited here before going to a concert next door. Obviously many others had the same idea so it was fairly busy, but the service at the bar was speedy, only slowed down by the likes of me trying to decide what to have as the selection is so vast. I opted for an ale but again there were many to choose from, being xmas I went for a rockin Rudolf.. I was very pleased with my choice. Tasted great. The wife had the same difficult decision of which Gin to have, so many flavours and choices. The person serving us recommended one of their gin spritz cocktails, not sure what was in it but the wife was loving them! We didn't have food as we had already eaten but could see they were serving. I would advise if you do plan to eat here before seeing a show get there early, we were only having drinks and struggled to find a table, but there is ample space to just mingle around if you do end up standing. We enjoyed this place so much we decided to return after the show. The wife needed one more gin thing so thought I would treat her as its xmas. Will definitely be visiting this place again, want to try the food cuz it did look good as it went past us.
Highly recommend a visit. Beautiful pub in a great setting.
H.
Lovely place and great outside when it’s sunny!
Although potion size for the fries was abit silly, 3.29£ for the tiniest bowl!
J.
Fantastic location overlooking the canal..and really interesting decor inside. food is great, really tasty. Staff are so friendly, welcoming and look like they really enjoy their jobs.
r. n.
Cracking pub, good food.. friendly staff nice and clean.. reasonably priced especially when compared to the other chain pubs and eateries around it.. will definitely be back if in and around the area
D. A.
An absolute gem of a pub. Stunning, great service, great food (I had the Katsu chicken burger) and it had the football on, not too loud, just enjoyable. Toilets were spotless and I loved the look of this old school pub and it’s location
J. G.
Great location and homely pub with friendly staff. Beer was good too. The food however was pretty disappointing. Katsu chicken burger at over £13 a pop arrived with cold chips (which were quickly replaced) and a very thin filet of overcooked dry chicken in a bun that was burnt black which completely ruined the flavour. I soldiered on having returned the food once due to the cold chips as was embarrassed to complain again. Left the very burnt bun on the plate when it was collected and decided not to risk a desert! The state of my meal.showed a complete lack of attention in the kitchen sending out very burnt cold food. Terrible value for money...Pie was much better hence 3 stars.... but felt ripped off
P.
Had a great Christmas meal here, my main which was the festive burger was more than I could stomach and was rich in flavor, looking at my work colleague dinners they all seemed the same regardless of turkey, steak or pie. Starters and desert were what you would expect small starters, sweet deserts.
Everyone enjoyed themselves and no-one had a complaint. Business was paying for drinks so can't tell you if it's expensive or not. Staff courteous and location next to the canal is spot on, I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed visiting here.
A. H.
Lovely decorations and different corners for small groups of customers. Excellent customer service. I ordered hunter's chicken and the chicken was not hot enough. It was taken care of immediately and a new meal was prepared the way I want it. It was a delicious meal at a reasonable price.
A. B.
Good food, drinks and even better staff. I'd like to give a personal thank you to Mark as he was great! Definitely recommend.
A. M.
Stella on tap, food and a view of the canal and barge boats. Seating outside in a chilled atmosphere and friendly locals.
The pub is a lovely place to relax and the food was good, service excellent, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Helped with whatever we needed which is ideal when your miles aways from home!
Recommend this pub 100%. Lovely little stop off before we continued our adventure...
K. M.
We watched the Man Utd v Liverpool game here and I absolutely can’t fault it. Welcoming, warm and friendly and the big fish and chips were to die for, bread and butter, mushy peas, curry sauce and pickled onions - lush 😘
M. F.
Really beautiful location by the canals. The drinks were ok and the fish & chips exquisite! Would recommend.
R. M.
Good food and good choice of drinks.
N. H.
A large, open wooden clad pub. Situated on the banks of Birmingham famous canals, just up from the raucousness of broad street. A single room with a matinee floor above, there is plenty of space, however the venue does get booked out regularly. Screen also adorn the walls for sport watching.
r. s.
Food and staff absolutely brilliant had the big fish meal and easily the best fish I've had in years. Was a pleasure to visit this place
A. C.
Great large pub, well decorated & roomy. The beer is good & so is the food. The pub is right on the canal & right next to the Birmingham Arena so is great for a pre & post gig drink.
R. M.
I wish it was my house! What an amazing experience it was. Both the light and the decoration are fabulous as well as the victorian architecture and decor surrounded by the canal! The variety of ales, laggers, siders, gins and whiskeys are enormous, and the food... don't get me started on the food! The variety of the menu is excellent and the quality, look, smell and taste were astonishing! Drinking a JD Honey by the fireplace was quite an awesome treat after a day of work! Its a must visit place in Birmingham for sure!
T. K.
Just had lunch at the Malthouse
Very good quality food served by very friendly staff so Pete, Elliot and Jo. Thank you. Would definitely recommend.
S. L.
Good venue, friendly staff, good pub food, would visit again.

Pre Christmas Saturday lunch. Booked late but they fitted in a party of 8 + 2 small children. Food was reasonably priced. Although busy the service was promptly served. Staff friendly and helpful.
Festive burger and chips - little bit dry but nice trimmings (stuffing and pigs in blankets on chips served with gravy!).
S.
We always lovely dining in here... either in summer months or winter months.. just can get really busy... beautiful traditional pub...on the canal.
P. T.
An amazing staff and it is a beautiful pub. But a quality of food should be improve. I waited for my fish and chips around 25 min. and finally was served warm - not hot, the side salad wasn't washed well. Definitely overpriced place.
"On a visit to Birmingham in 1998 for a G8 summit, US President Bill Clinton wowed the locals with an impromptu lunch at the Malt House pub.^ BBC
A. J.
Fabulous place. Food is lovely and the staff are helpful and friendly
P. P.
All that we expect from an english traditional pub ! The place is wonderful and the food was great ! We come twice during the WE because we really like this pub (and the pie) ! Thanks
F. H.
Nice pub in a lovely area of the canals, short and nice walk from the centre and very close to Sealife Centre and the Arena. Huge selection of beers and food including local guest ales. Lovely interior and great views to the canals.
w.
Overpriced drinks: I was charged £4.75 for one "real ale", that's about £3 at Wetherspoons outlets. Mediocre management: Balcony area was closed off (again) due to being booked by a "private party". (I was there 2 hrs, didn't see a single person up there). Nowhere to sit: By 3:30pm there are no tables left (inside) if you are in a group (Saturday afternoon). Pub is in a great location, but the owners make you pay through the nose for that privilege. Sweet smelling toilets and good table clearance service don't make up for overall underwhelming experience.
S. H.
Such a friendly pub, with good menu options, especially for kids. We really enjoy it here.
う. ひ.
Beautiful location by the canal of Birmingham. Good Traditional English Food. Fish and Chips was huge. WE(Japanese) laughed so hard. I shared smaller plate with my friend<3
A. T.
I have been at Malt House several times with my boyfriend and my friends. It's just amazing! The staff is so nice and friendly and the food is delicious! Try the half kilo of chicken wings or the nachos , it's a goodness for your mouth. I thank chefs as well and everyone working there for the amazing experience I have every time! 5 stars is the minimum I could give! Thanks a lot :)
S.
Fabulous place for food and drinks. Side by the beautiful canal.
We sat outside, ambience was nice. Food tastes yummy. Reasonable price too. Staffs are very helpful. Must visit place.
S. L.
Last Saturday your staff were amazing really helpful would highly recommend anyone looking for a fun n welcoming atmosphere to come here
A. B.
Lovely beer, great balcony with views over the canals, and the staff go above and beyond. I foolishly left something of real personal value in the pub and they were great at getting it back to me. Special thanks to Flora-Joy especially who was incredibly helpful. Faith in humanity restored. Would fully recommend.
j. O.
Fantastic service. Unfortunately, I don’t think the meals are that great. I ordered a burger and it tasted synthetic - churned out in a factory. After the first mouthful, I swapped meals with my husband. He had the salt beef. No one from the rest of our group commented about the food. Pity. Great location. Great service.
K. R.
26Aug21: Canal side pub with typical pub menu, good choice of ales - especially if you like Greene King brewery. Efficient staff. Has terrace and balcony which are ideal for watching the world go about its business. City centre prices
K. K.
Lovely to sit outside in sunshine overlooking the sea life centre and canal.
E.
Friendly staff. Organised. Great views. Car park next to the pub which always has spaces. Food is what you’d expect from a chain. Prices match the area. Old Mout on tap, which you don’t really see often.
D. S.
A great atmosphere. Lovely meal and lovely friendly staff. Definately recommended.
M. D.
Popular pub, in the summer this can be heaving and depending on what you want not a nice experience. Pick a quiter time however and enjoy the atmosphere, decor and really excellent examples of quality pub grub
A. M.
Very nice pub. Have a lot of ice. Pete's the best.
C. J.
Nice balcony, nice pub. Over priced
S. S.
Lovely food and very friendly staff, brilliant stop before going to a gig. I do have to say getting there in a wheelchair ( like me ) can be difficult but achievable
M. F.
We went here Sunday 27th June 2021. The service and staff were absolutely fantastic. We had 7 meals which were all beautiful. We had a great family meal in fab location with excellent service. Can't wait to return.
A. P.
Great location, by the canal. Amazing food and very helpful staff. Would love to visit again.
R. K.
Very good meal, nice Staff and very nice ambiente.
H. V.
Nice place with great view around the canal. Lovely staff served us and I do like the decoration which looks really cosy.
R. C.
This is the pub you are looking for, don't look any further! Great draft ales, bitters and beers, great food and a fantastic location!
T. F.
The Malt House is a nice pub at the Birmingham Canals. They have a wide range of beers, including lots of local ones. We didn't know at first which beer to pick, so the lady behind the bar was very friendly and let us taste the different options. Afterwards we took a table outside on the balcony, with a beautiful view over the Canals. I would certainly recommend this place!
S. J.
Friendly, fast, knowledgeable staff in a truly beautiful bar. Large drink selection and very clean.
J. a.
Nice looking old pub. So wanted to experience it so Popped in for coffee, just after lunch time and got a nice table overlooking the canal then found out coffee machine was broken, so went to nearby Costa instead. Went back a few hours later , evening time, for some thing to eat and it was packed out no Spare chairs or tables anywhere, disappointed we never got to try this interesting looking pub out!
K. v. P.
Wonderful pub!
The best pub arouns, loads of ditting options with magnificent views over the canal. Extremely friendly personnel and good selection of beers.
Music is not loud so great for catching up with friends.
j. r.

Really cozy place at the water! And really good food! You definitely want to here for a drink after work, your Sunday roast or to meet with friends. I really recommend this place!
J. W.
Lovely pub by the canal. Food was excellent. Friendly staff, great experience
W. W.
Great food quick service and nice inside & good staff
J. W.
Nice pub in a great location right by the
Arena Birmingham
Nice decor and a good layout with different corners for groups
It stands the side of the canal and is perfect for summer days with outside seating and a outside upstairs seating area
There is a very good drinks and food menu at a reasonable price
The staff are helpful and friendly
... If there is an event at the Arena it can get very busy and take several minutes to get served ...
s. b.
First time trying and was really good. Sat outside, had lunch and had good people watching view over canal etc. Their covid measures are really strong and made us feel comfortable (we haven't been out and about much due to me being pregnant!) one way system, hand sanitiser stations every where, our waiter wore a mask, paper menus plus option to order from table using app. Felt v safe. Food was decent - good portion sizes and nice quality (if slightly restricted menu on the app!)
p.
Very lovely and cosy pub :) fast and nice staff... located by Birmingham's canals. Recommend! :)
K. O.
Only place that had ‘short notice’ table for 6 on our recent trip to Stoke. We had the carvery at 8pm and it was still delicious, was worried that we might get the ‘end of the night’ food. Service was great, staff all very friendly and attentive. It was my birthday and they brought out the most delicious piece of toffee cheesecake I have ever had (and I’ve had a few!) and all sang to me. Nice touch at the end of of evening.
This place is what it is, a lib with grub...however as long as the carvery stays as fresh and tasty as it it I would recommend. Normal menu food looked very standard.
B. D.
Great place.. always pop in when we are around.
Flora-joy is a great barmaid with sass and sarcasm in all the right places.
A. E.
The food was good but service was a bit slow. Nice location with great views of the canals.
J.
Great food at a good price with excellent service.
P. k.
Visited last month.
First pub/restaurant outing post lockdown
Really enjoyed our dining experience
The team were kind & helpful they were respectful of our space and it was nice to see them taking the safety precautions so seriously with every customer :)
Ordered vegan burgers and fries which tasted incredible!
I'm so glad we decided to take a chance here after visiting the sea life centre!
:)
I. B.
Nice place . Staff untrained to use the coffe machine and I have been served 4 coffees onto milk jugs.
F. S.
It's a brilliant place to have a few drinks and excellent food. Kids friendly and the staff is excellent. It is on the canals, near national sea life and legoland. The scenery is perfect to enjoy a whisky or 2. We loved it so much we went 3 times the same week. We were there last summer and 3 weeks ago.
K. S.
One of the best pints of "Old Peculiar" I have ever drunk - even compared to the brewery!! Great food, sensibly priced along with friendly and helpful staff, provided a family friendly environment that would be tough to beat. I would highly recommend that Malt House to serious beer drinkers, families and those just wanting a spot of quick "down time", alike. Excellent!
A. 3.
Nice atmosphere, decent prices and good food. They have quite a few good vegan options; the veg pie and the nut roast are very tasty. The staff are helpful and chatty, we were served by a friendly barman with a love of anime! It's located by the canal and decorated quite nice. Will be going again.
R. L.
Came in for food and drink. Wonderful service! Very friendly staff Would definitely come back again.
M. A.
Food is very reasonably priced. Staff always are there to help. The pub has live music some if the times we've been which has made for a really nice evening out. Lots of seating with covered outdoor area and an upstairs as well.
T. T.
Food was ok but beer was warm and didn't taste good :-(
B. I.
My visit was brief but pleasant none the less. This is a large canal side pub with a balcony overlooking the canal area. We were lucky enough to snag a couple of tables on the balcony and enjoyed a cool drink on what was a hot and sunny day. Facilities were clean and decent standard. Didn't have anything to eat but there is a decent sized pub food menu that looked good value
Y. C. T.
First day open after lockdown, the whole pub was really clean, the staff were all lovely and the food was lovely 10/10
Favourite greeneking to come to
m. w.
First pub since lockdown. Bit nervous but member of the team leaving us so important to say goodbye. Great drinks ordered from app and served outside. No trouble at all
G. S.
Lovely atmosphere & great location for the canal, the ICC & the NIA .
J. J.
Wasn't there for long. Nice interior. Was okay.
A. B.
Nice spot for a drink. Food was just ok, my partner enjoyed her fish, I wouldn't recommend the steak pie, crust was too tough and the gravy way too thick.
Great location, however there is a lot of competition around the canal which I would try before returning here.
p. l.
Fantastic food and service in the central Birmingham by the canal. I had a salt beef burger meal deal which drinks only cost extra one pound. Best deal I've had for a long time. Let alone the delicious food, nice view and lovely service. I will definitely go back again.
A. B.
Great selection of seating in the pub just off the canal and close to exhibition and sea life centres. There was outside seating overlooking the canal too.
There was a good range of food and drinks available and not too long a wait at the bar when we visited.
Staff were friendly and the service was quick.
T.
Great place with good beers and nice food.
s. b.
Only had a drink. But loved the old mout cider on tap!
D. M.
Myself and the wife visited Birmingham city recently and visited a quite a few pubs and restaurants during our visit but the Malt House was by far our favourite. The pub itself is beautiful very relaxing both inside and out it sits right on the canal so you get some beautiful views. The views aren't the only thing that make you want to stay the food was excellent and they also had a wide variety of drinks, I'm pretty easy going once the beer is cold and fresh I'm happy and that it was. The wife is a bit fussier she drinks an unusual vodka and likes different types of gin not the usual Corks or Gordans but they were well able to cater for her every whim. The staff were excellent even during busy periods they were friendly and quick to tend to us. We visited this place three times and every time was a very pleasurable experience we will defiantly be going there again the next time we visit Birmingham.
L. M.
Lovely little spot, great for food after Legoland or the Sea Life Centre. The guy on the bar was super friendly and helpful, atmosphere was cosy and charming. Food was really delicious and came out quickly and our little one loved looking out of the window at the canal and the boats.
J. M.
Lovely surprise finding this as I have never visited that area before. Loved the layout, fixtures and fittings. Staff were friendly and for once our timing was great having arrived just before hordes of women waiting to watch the Strictly Tour arrived looking for tables. Will definitely be back
G. M.
Great place for a pint at the end of the work day
M. W.
Friendly staff, nice cosy pub, food wasn't the best, ordered a burger which came with onion rings, but when the food arrived there were no onion rings. Wasnt really an issue but would of been nice to know before placing the order and not have to ask myself.
A. K.
Great service, lovely pub with canalside views and excellent covid precautions, including one way system in and out of the pub, as well as a ordering via an app. Lovely way to end a summer evening!
E. R.
Not been here in a few years. It appears to have had a refurb and it is much nicer for it.
I was visiting the IET next door. Decided to pop in for lunch. Had a basic Cheeseburger which was about £11. But it was good quality and tastes nice, so I'd say it was fair value.
Service was polite and speedy. Overall it was a pleasant experience. Would come back.
A. G. (.
Nice place to eat a great burger 🍔 :)
A.
Went with family during the day for something to eat. The food was great reasonably priced. They also have a great selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Right on the canel as well. Well worth the visit would definitely recommend going there either for food or just a drink with mates.
J. F.
Nice atmosphere, nice people, great beers, reasonable prices and the view of the canal.
J. G.
Good laid back atmosphere overlooking the Birmingham canal.
Typical english pub food.
w. d.
Really good place to drop into for a meal. Very attentive and friendly staff, excellent service and we'll presented food. Good range of beers. Plenty of space, well laid out over two floors, nice views of the canal.
A. A.
Great place hosting service and food
We visited this place this Sunday at 8pm we were a company of 4. 1 man 3 women. Ordered food loaded nachos, Louisiana burrito, steak ale pie and a falaffel burger which all were excellent! especially the burrito which had fantastic flavor! Friendly staff and great service and great food!
C. S.
I ate here with a colleague who wasn't too impressed that I'd picked a pub rather than one of the restaurants just across the water, but as we had eaten out every night for five weeks, I was after a change.
By the time we left, I think she was a convert. She commented that the menu was broader than she expected. The food was good and arrived fairly quickly. I had a couple of beers and the whole thing was considerably cheaper than many of the other local restaurants. The building looks huge from the outside, I'd be very interested to see if there is more to it internally than I saw.
C. H.
I've not been here in over 25years & every time I've been. There's always a friendly family atmosphere in here ! Beautiful old building along the canal side. Prices are spot on ! If you fancy a day/night out in Birmingham city centre and you love the canal side, then this his definitely the place To be 100 % gets my 5-star's all the way.
T. A.
Lovely canal-side spot for informal bite or sandwiches. It was a sunny day and the gardens and external areas were well populated. Nice ambience & close to ICC, Brindley Place and Sea World too. Highly recommended if you are canal walking in the area. Would
visit again in future. Tony.
A. R.
Nice location, good price quality
C. F.
This place was buzzing. We stopped on the way to the Arena to
Kiss. The Malt House has an atmosphere of it's own. It was busy but the staff kept up and kept smiling. It's a great place for a drink. Loved it
D. D.
Really interesing canal side pub. Loads of real ales and lovely views of the canal and the narrow boats.
P. M.
Very comfy place with live fireplace. Their decorations are very nice and witty. I am not personally a fan of restaurants where you have to take a seat and then go order at the bar. In addition their hot water machine was broken so we could not get the tea and coffee we wanted. Their desserts were pretty good. Chocolate cake was maevelous the apple crumble not that much. In any case, very convenient location.
R. T.
Excellent service me and my wife went for food before UB40 concert the pub was rammed with fans aswell as other people on there night out ! Got a table in 15 minutes ordered food the staff said 45 minutes wait on food and it was out in 20 mins if that !! Beautiful steaks cooked as we asked 100 % eating there again for any event at arena Brum !!!!! ......... The fish n chips looked good on table sat next to me so already know what I'm having nextime .

Great views, great drinks, especially when the landlord/ bar manager offers you some #RonZaccapa at half the price. Cant get much better than that for a customer experience. Gonna be back here through the summer 4 sure.
c. j.
Lovely setting on the canalside in the centre of birmingham. Staff were friendly and the queue for food soon went down when an extra pair of hands helped serving behind the bar. Waiting time for food was a little longer than normal but the settings made the waiting time irrelevant. I would advise you to speak clearly when ordering food as part of our order was wrong when it arrived. Overall the food was lovely and the pub itself is clean and recommended. Well worth a visit.
d. r.
Typical Greene king pub, you kinda know what to expect. The premises is great, awesome location and perfect for drinks on a hot day in the beer garden overlooking the cannel.
Food seems a bit hit and miss
k.
Nice canalside location. Very busy until crowd depart for the Arena next door. Food decent, arrived within 10 minutes. Limited car parking outside, less than 10 spaces. Probably best to use the nearby NCP
P. J.
We hired out the mezzanine and balcony for my sisters 50th birthday, we had a fantastic evening! The staff were all really lovely and friendly. There are lots of rock memorabilia on the walls which we loved. Great views over the canal and Brindley Place, especially once it was dark with all the pretty lights reflecting off the water.
l. l.
Lovely pub. Friendly helpful bar staff
a. D.
We came from New York and while touring Birmingham, came to visit this gem of a pub. Best fish and chips we've had in years. Not bad prices too. If you visit B'ham, you should pay a visit to the Malt House. It's right near the canal and very close to the ICC, Broad St etc.
K. G.
Tasty beer, tasty food, good service!
J. B.
The Malthouse is a nice casual place for food and drinks, with a decent selection of beer and well served plates for hungry stomachs. The outside space offers beautiful views on the canal junction. The only drawback is that it gets very crowded as soon as the sun is out. All credit to the recent refurb they had and the nice staff. Bill Clinton visited.... but that's a very long time ago.
A.
Really nice 'old style' pub with lots of seating on two floors and an outside heated area.
Very close to Brindley Place / Broad Street / BarclayCard Arena - a blessing and a curse - as it gets VERY busy when big shows are on. Best to book in advance on this days!
N. J.
Lovely pub. Great amounts of lagers and ales on tap. Bartender was excellent and courteous. Located in a nice little area. Decor inside is pretty nice too. All in all, a must visit pub in Birmingham.
J. C.
Was taken here last fri night by local friends. Wasn't to busy so we got seats. Decent range of drinks and decent must. Few teles which should the football. Brewers fair style place but decent enough.
S. S.
Lovely place, right next to the canal. Particularly nice when the weather's good - they have tables right up next to the towpath, great for a pint in the sun!
Am yet to try the food, but from glancing at plates on other people's tables it looks tasty!
S. M.
What a lovely pub.
With great scenic views.
Great select of beers and wine
And the food is very reasonably priced.
Great place to go on a sunny day.
And sit out on the terrace overlooking the canel.
M. D.
Had an excellent meal tonight , all the staff made it a very enjoyable experience. Would recommend and visit again
J. C.
Nice large pub restaurant with lots of tables inside and outside. Situated on the bank of the canal. Great selection of drinks and food. Very reasonable prices. Nice atmosphere inside and out. Staff nice and friendly.
A. C.
Great service, great food, great beer!
S. S.
Nice pub near the canal, food a bit pricy for what you get, plus drinks kinda on the high price also. Some of the bar staff nice but others bit moody and face looked like couldn't be bothered
R.
There was a long wait for the food but they told us about it so I didn't mind. They had the six Nations rugby on so if you want to watch sports then maybe this is a decent place for that.
C. S.
Nice pub in a great location. Staff are efficient, one of the few places in the brindleyplace area where you can get a beer reasonably quickly without having to queue behind the coffee and cocktails brigade (usually )
S. S.
Staff are very friendly with a large selection of drinks available. The views from the terrace of the canal are amazing! Well worth a visit for a classic British pub experience.
J. P.
Firstly the food is great, really comforting and wholesome. I would say definitely one of the best GastroPubs in Brum. Next the drinks range is good with a real good choice of ales, wines etc. The views aren't half bad too, sat right on the canal side you can watch boars come by. It also has balconies which are amazing in the summer and when the sun is shining. My only murmur is that it can get incredibly busy, not the staffs fault of course and they handle it well.
M. H.
Friendly and reliable - it's a Green King pub so you are getting a decent selection of ales and some nice whiskeys (to be honest that's pretty much all I care about!). The staff are nice and it is in a nice part of Brum - where the north and west canals meet the Gas Street Basin. My mates and I would prefer if there were more activities here - maybe an odd quiz or some music or even a some new cocktails. Basically - it's USP is the canals and they are nice but they won't keep you coming back.
D. W.
Very good. Excellent food and service.
Only down side time their was spoilt by screaming and crying children with parents who couldn't control them.
Maybe they should look into a
family area.?
P. L.
It's a nice, cosy pub overlooking the canals. It gets busy on weekends but is tends to be nice and quiet on weekdays. It's perfect in summer when you can take your food and drinks outside.
Apparently, Bill Clinton had a pint there during his visit to Birmingham.
T. B.
Couldn’t fault the food or service, great roast, vast drinks range and plenty of staff on.
Perfect location on the canal and right next to the Sealife Centre and NIA. Ideal outdoor seating when the sun is out too.
Definitely worth a visit.
S. R.
Great beer and food when it eventually comes, over an hour wait. Very understaffed for a 6 Nations Saturday. Location and surroundings are terrific, perfect for the NIA.
S. P.
When I first arrived in Birmingham my friend took me to grab a beer at the Malt House. It was on his way to his apartment and the upper terrace had a nice view of the canals so I said yes and stopped for a Guiness.
As we sat there for an hour or so we got our feet up and emptied our pints we admired the canals and the Arena while laughing at tales from when we were kids.
Evening came and we decided to go to his home, walking down the stairs, the pub now filled with people.
During my 7 day trip to Birmingham I had the chance to drink and eat quite a few times at this place.
Even though it is big, really big in the evenings you can have some problems finding a free spot to eat because the inside, the upper terrace and even the tables outside, at the entrance are often full with people chatting over a beer or enjoying some food.
But this is the charm, in my opinion, for such places: old and young, men and women, girls laughing out loud and boys joking as beer flows and food is brought to the tables.
What I really enjoy in England is this exact feeling. The feeling you get when you are in a pub.
Laughter, joy, sports on tv, people standing out and smoking, the locals knowing eachother and if you really lucky sometimes a good old pie.
From what I remember I tried all the three pies from the menu (lamb, steak and chicken) and found them all very good. Without disrespect to the chicken pie who was very good I must say I sure miss a lamb or steak and ale pie more.
I’m a big fan of Guiness so I drank quite a few beers while visiting this location but other ales are available and they are just as good.
I have found the staff very pleasant, laughed, even told some jokes or had a small conversation while filling the glasses.
The prices are UK prices but sometimes, after a good laugh, a great pie and Guiness price doesnt matter that much anymore.
I cannot comment about other things from the menu since I haven’t tried them but if you’re ever in the area you can surely stop for a lamb pie and serve it on the upper terrace while relaxing and watching the canals.
For me, this has been a lovely experience and since i plan to visit my friend again i will sure get me a steak and ale pie the next time i'm there.
n.
Great scenery on the Canal good food prices
O. M.
Staff were amazing and friendly and the food was awesome. Big thumbs up from us and can't wait to revisit
R. K.
Beautiful little place with great beers and a lovely menu. The most helpful staff I have come across in years. Do not miss this place it's a gem
H. v.
Really nice pub with large selection of drinks. Perfect if you want to have a quiet drink with a beautiful view.
R. B.
Good ponts:
Nice bread
Nicely decorated
Decent atmosphere
Bad points:
Out of date cider (did give us a different cider)
Cheese didn't have much flavour
Slightly unenthusiastic bar staff
a. c.
Nice, welcoming atmosphere. Even though I had a 45 minute wait for food. It was of good quality, would go here again. (£2.45,for a coke)
R. B.
Excellent canalside pub. Great outdoor seating. Excellent range of real ales beyond usual Greeene King's own staple. Wide range of snacks and meals. Will be going again.
M. K.
A spacious pub, located on the canal side with good food and drinks. Staff are friendly and helpful. Seems family friendly too, as I saw a lot of families with children, including babies!
G. P.
A nice place with a very good food.
R. H.
It had been a few years since I last visited the Malt House. We went there for lunch on a week day and so was quiet but we didn't mind. The staff were very friendly, food was lovely and the ales were good. I definitely won't leave it as long between my next visit.
J. H.
Reasonable priced drinks, excellent canal side location, within throwing distance of the Birmingham arena. Clean and modern decor. Staff were efficient and polite
W. R.
Nice pub but clientele was rough. This used to be a great pub back in the 90's..didn't feel safe when came outside onto canal towpath.
J. C.
Best view for a drinking hole on that stretch of the canal
M. V.
Personnel is good. Food is nice only takes a time to get it.
D. R.
Really great place to be
F. A.
I always come here with my wife and family when I visit Birmingham. Beautiful place at the canal. Very nice food but it takes a while depending on how busy it gets. Very good choice of food & drink...
A. G.
Great pub on the canal side. Good food , good beer and friendly staff. Location is very nice with two floors and outside balconies. It's a bit expensive but well worth it.
j. t.
Large pub on the side of the canal. Very nice and clean inside with an upstairs seating area. Food looked nice.
P. E.
Great place by the canal. Good place floor food and a good see selection of drinks. Nice friendly staff and had plenty of seating with outside seating as well.
M. H.
Lovely little pub, with a brilliant view of the canals to watch the world go by. Not too expensive however frequently very busy
P. G.
First visit in recent years. Seems to be doing okay again. Good choice of beers on, quick service. Not too busy but not too quiet. Beer a little bit pricey though.
g. p.
Modern pub done in traditional style. Greene King beers plus a guest one or two. Usual range of pub food with good portions. Nice canal side setting.
A. W.
Very local to the Barclaycard Arena so makes a good venue before a show. Set in a very pretty location also. Lost a star due to slow service/people getting served before me who showed up after I did.
S. “. M.
Great spot. The staff were lovely and the pub itself has great décor. The pub was also very reasonably priced
K. B.
Visited whilst waiting for daughter at a concert. Pub very busy but quitened down when most left to go to concert. Staff very friendly and chatty. Food tasty and hot
G. S.
Good service. Friendly staff. Prices on a par with similar city centre establishment. However this place wins by a mile for its location and its internal fittings. A must go for a Birmingham pub.
J. G.
To be fair it was the night Slipknot played, bar staff excellent, atmospheric amazing, but all credit to the big man who served me, top man and i recommend this pub everytime
A. P.
Myself and my husband have never been to the malt house before, well we will surely be back as we really enjoyed sitting outside having a drink. Inside was very clean and pleasent. 💯✅
A. B.
Very busy so book if you can, the food was really good, had the chicken burger, everyone on our table cleared their plate, even had dessert, which was very nice.
D. B.
Alright drink selection, but quite expensive due to its Canal-side location. Good views and comfortable atmosphere.
C. C.
Lovely birthday meal had here great location as were going to celine dion concert next door at the barclaycard arena lovely canal side table food was gorgeous and outstanding service from harry who helped us suprise my mom with the celine dion tickets at the table would definitely reccomend!
D. S.
Great view over the canal. Good location for the Barclaycard arena etc. If you are at the bar, look behind you and there is a photo of Bill Clinton enjoying a pint there a few years back.
n. n.
Food is quick once you order at the bar. It is clean and has a nice view. A lot of beer options avaliable and games to play.
J. R.
I have to give 3 starts due reasons one no coffee they told me they ran out of coffee and ran out of marshmallows for the hot chocolate also veg in my opinion was very undercooked very hard to chew the pie was nice way too little gravy and the mash seemed like it was smashed and a little bit of mush so was a bit disappointed my dinner however the pie was very nice
M.
Had a Vegan Christmas Dinner here with work colleagues. Food was delicious, quite a wait to be served considering we had booked meals in advance.
J. R.
Really nice atmospheric pub overlooking the canal with outdoor seating on a balcony. Great staff good priced food and drink
D. S. A.
Great pub - wonderful food and at a good price. Scenes and peaceful surroundings - would definitely recommend

S. R.
Not a bad pub by all accounts... decent beer fast service when possible let and some friendly staff
J. J.
Quite nice, large, spacious and open on the inside but during these winter months it can get a little chilly in there if it isn't packed out!
S. P.
Nice pub, quite busy as there was an event on at the arena. Bar service was slow and people who arrived at the bar after us were served before which was off putting.
C. B.
Pub food was good and hearty, served quickly, but just pricey.. 12 for fish and chips... Good location on the canal side
R. P.

L. D.
Lovely location, ideal for a pre concert drinks and a meal. Food very good.
W. B.
Seemed to have ran out of Cask Ales but that might have been down to the massive queues which, presumably, were coming from Birmingham Arena. Might be nicer when it's a little quieter, especially if you can sit out by the canal.
S. H.
Great pub. Lovely and cosy in the lead up to Xmas. Drinks were great friendly staff highly recommended
