Drinks are very special and signature. But most either with bubbles or dry ice only. After ordering two to three, will feel a bit bored with it. Doesn’t really get a sense of chemistry as expected. More like gimmicks things only instead. I would prefer it’s more like molecular cuisine or mixing two different test tube of drinks into a new taste, which more like chemist. Food is so so, not bad, but not really very delicious. Just street standard. If you want to take photos or video, it is a nice place for cocktails and photos with friends, otherwise a bit disappointed if you put your expectation on the taste of food or drinks. As I prefer the taste of food and drinks, I would give 3.5 stars only. If just for cocktails and photos, it worth 4 to 4.5 stars.

We booked online and left a deposit for the £35 bottomless brunch. But sadly as we caught covid, we had to cancel, the restaurant was really good, they held onto the deposit and allowed us to change the date for when we were clear. When we came, the restaurant was quiet, service was quick and our waiter was very attentive. The menu had a good variety for brunch and it was a really good portion size plus the cocktails were delicious, a bit on the heavy side. The only downfall is when we booked it was offering the £35 bottomless brunch, but when we asked after our brunch order how much time we had left for bottomless, they advised it was no longer available and we had already made our second order. So it was disappointing as we planned a moms day off for a lot of tipples!

Great experience! If you want to drink something really good and with an impressive presentation just try this restaurant! The bar and restaurant are very nice and ambient atmosphere. The food is good too. Nice service also, they a big variety of drinks and food also. I really recommend this if you wanna try something else.

They're good at what they do in serving up great cocktails and mocktails, but it's not somewhere I personally would spend an entire night. I had no more than a couple of drinks before moving on. I had the Smokey Old Fashioned. My tee-total wife's mocktail was incredibly sweet when I tasted it, to the point that my booze was probably much healthier! Maybe we're too old for the place!, still very lively and popular amongst the youngsters though. Right by snow hill station so easy to get to.

A pretty cool chilled bar (and restaurant) for late night cocktails, chat and chill. Massive cocktail menu, but that's what it's all about. The potions, the mixtures and the flavours. Plenty to choose from, and nit exactly cheap, but not more than usual for quality cocktails. Service was good and staff knowledgeable.

Wheelchair accessible, friendly staff,wheelchair accessible toilet,easy access with a ramp provided by the staff ,ramp is left by the entrance door ,it is a kerb height step. Food excellent, known for dramatic cocktails ,tried all and staff are brilliant,supportive and accommodating to your needs including food allergies,intolerances. It is very busy ,bes tto always pre book. The price reflects the cocktails and food quality. Recommended to go lunchtimes qnd early evenings if you want to hear yourself. It is also family friendly. Busy but worth it for theatrical drinks, £20 for 2 cocktails, I had the red dead zombie which came with a syringe of absinth and dry ice bubbles and hubby had the smoky old fashioned whish had a beaker of smoke to 'marinade' the drink for a deep smoky flavour

Personally, the most interesting bar I've been to so far. The waiter serving us (didn't get their name) was very professional and informative, told us everything they were doing and really put up a show! Needless to say, the cocktails were delicious

This place was amazing. The drinks were both really cool and Tasty, plus they let you keep the flask and get cheaper refills if your drink comes in one. And the food, holy heck, I don't think I've ever eaten anything quite like it.

You should definitely visit. Yes yes yes, the cocktails are expensive so don't bother unless you're happy paying over £10 per drink - but the experience of being served theatrical drinks that come with science equipment and dry ice is most certainly worth it. Splash out a bit and have some fun!

Visited late Saturday night. Great atmosphere, busy! There is a bit of a wait at the bar but this is due to the complicated mixing and occasional theatrics by the bar staff - intriguing and very entertaining! Having ordered one drink we were seated in the table service area which meant no more queuing for us. The drinks were amazing, delicious and fairly priced (we had just come from a pub charging more for G&T!). Would definitely recommend and will absolutely return - skipping the pub en route!

This was my first time coming to the The Alchemist in Birmingham. I was not disappointed, loved everything about the atmosphere and appearance. I can tell they will pride themselves on cocktails. We had the £25 bundle which is 3 cocktails and a light plate of food. I had 3 out of the possible 4 cocktails on the list, I liked them all equally for there was variation considering the cherry liqueur was the overall theme. The plate I had which was squash, halloumi and potato (minus the poached egg) was perfection, light but filly. Had a lovely server and good service. Would revisit to sample more of anything going.

Brilliant bottomless brunch deal. 3 cocktails and brunch for £25PP. Brilliant cocktails food was lush. Always brilliant service and facilities are lovely. Cocktails not expensive when you factor in watching them being made and the spectacle of them!

Went for food and a couple of drinks, while you do pay a premium for their drinks they are impressive. The decor added to the ambiance in that it was sightly dimly lit to let showy aspects of the drinks prevail. The staff were friendly and attentive. Would definitely visit again to worm my way through the cocktail menu as you are spoilt for choice. Another nice little touch or two, is that the Alchemist donate a hot meal for someone in need with every order of two particular things from the food menu. They also donate to an LGBT cause with the order of a specific drink also!

The drinks are good just a little too sweet for my liking. But the food was not that good. The portions are weird and some of the food is not what is described on the menu. I ordered the miso fish and the portion was tiny and the bartered fish was all batter and no fish! Such a shame for a really nice ambience wish the food matched!

Went there for a late lunch and what a great place. I was a bit unsure to start but the staff and atmosphere were exceptional. They welcomed us in with smiles and a happy nature. The food was excellent. The staff made the place.

We popped in as we were walking past, lively but not super busy, Becca greeted us and sat us down, she gave us enough time to look through the menus, ( the cocktail one is practically a book). We ordered a screwball cocktail and a dead red zombie one, both were delicious and very pleasing to just admire. We ordered a selection of starters ( prawn lollipops, pulled pork bon bons, salt and pepper chicken wings and fries) All came hot and well presented. We've already picked out our cocktails for the next time we go in, looking forward to returning.

Awesome decor, astomphere is chill and the staff are friendly. The cocktails are awesome and fancy, albeit quite expensive but they're worth it as a one-off treat. The theatrics of your drink being put together in front of you is a show in itself, which is needless to say pretty damn cool. Not somewhere I'd go often simply due to the price, but it's definitely well worth a visit every now and then. P.S. The Smokey Old Fashioned is lovely!

All the same,all different. A latte is a latte, and this latte is very particular: a cute little see-through box containing the sugar, a heavy earhrrnwsre cup, and, the best bit, the hottest drink I have ever had out (the presentation was ruined because i,'d spooned- in the sugar); the views - uniquely ideosyncratic: modern street, ancient Kirk and a sign leaving no doubt as to where I am, and ALL varriation just by looking from my seat! In a word, a GREAT latte! I simply love hot latte first, and this was given me tongue-burning hot, so when it came to drinking it it was cosher - absolutely right! Oh wow....my daughter n partner bought me here for my 66th birthday....being a cream tea kinda gal i was a bit wary of feeling old n out if my depth but....I LOVED IT....fantastic atmosphere, something to look at ,(and use your imagination), on every wall and surface. Menu was gorgeous, staff friendly and helpful. 3 courses each, 2 rounds of drinks and 2 coffees - £82...bravo and well done to all the staff in these uncertain times 👍

I'd recommend you book if you want a table it went was very well organised. We went on a Friday night the music was quite loud but that is probably what people want good 90's tunes too but it is a very good atmosphere. The drinks are incredible not too alcoholic but the theatre you get with them is amazing. Like kids pretending they were having a tea party with chemistry sets and teapots. Such a lot of clever ideas dry Ice creeping all over the table but I didn't manage to order one on fire maybe for the best. The service was fantastic the food was really good katsu curry chips went down a treat good vegan options here. Bathrooms are downstairs and quite quirky. We've been wanting to visit here for a while and they didn't disappoint!!

I've been to The Alchemist many times. Its our go to for meeting up for a good catch up with friends. We went here for lunch. I am vegan and was happy to see that they had vegan options on the menu. I booked a table and as a member, I also received a discount off our bill. I had the Falafel Wrap with Sweet Potato Fries and vegan mayo. The food was nice. One of my friends had Chicken In A Basket and the other a chicken wrap. We all were very happy with the food and the service too. We will be back again soon. I've been back. I had the Seitain in a basket with sweet potato fries and vegan mayo. It was perfect. We even got 20% off the bill as I'm a member, become members people. I've been back and again always amazing. The menu is smaller, but still enough to choose from.

Lovely Alchemist, felt a bit rushed by the staff about the duration of our booking. Every time we ordered a drink we were told we only have "an hour left" or "35 minutes left" - when we acquired if the table was booked out again at 10pm we were told no, but that the two hour slots were just standard. Unfortunate as we would've generated more income!

Very busy cocktail bar! But there's a good reason for that, the cocktails are fantastic! Some very dramatic, smoking in true science fashion. Great flavour combinations served in various glasses and vessels. Table service available if you can get a table, abit of patience is needed but worth the wait once seated! Very lively, quite loud, can be busy, but it's really well though out because you still have your own personal space. There's dining if you like or you can sit in the bar area just for drinks. You can have your drinks brought to you at your table, or you can go to the Bar. It's fun at the bar watching and having a chat with the cocktail artists. They are good and service is pretty fast as well.

Cocktails with theatrics, an excitable atmosphere and aesthetically pleasing surroundings. It's always busy in here and you will need to book ahead for food or if you insist on a table for drinks. The staff are fantastic, it was in fact the security doorman who offered to find us a table when i last visited. The wait staff are always happy to talk you through the cocktail menu as well. Don't miss out on checking out the other bar downstairs too.

Amazing atmosphere, great staff, and very good drinks. The menu is spectacular and the while "Alchemist" thing is very original and very fun. Drinks are somewhat expensive, but you get it more for the creativity and experience than you do the drink itself. Seating was very comfortable, and overall a very nice place to spend some time with friends. Would definitely recommend to all that like to try different cocktails and don't mind spending a bit of money!

I didnt have any food, however i have eaten here before. I have had the chicken in a basket and it literally is fried chicken pieces in a chicken wire frame basket which is cool. Popped in here for some after work drinks on a hot day. Sat near the bar and this place has really good views of the cathedral (check out my photo below). The cocktails are a hit here, somewhat pricy but the effects of some of them (bubbles, smoke and fire) are awesome. It is conveniently located close to snow hill station and Birmingham Grand Central.

A brilliant place to visit with friends and family. We normally pay £35 each for a brunch and 90mins of unlimited drinking (selected drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic) the only thing I notice that's happened is the time of ordering drinks to them coming to our table.. you can only order another drink when you've finished the one in your glass.. this inturn limited the drinking we could do with in the 90mins (not as we're alcoholics).. 😉🤷🏼‍♂️.

Absolutely gorgeous venue. Really aesthetically pleasing, friendly staff. It’s so different and refreshing. Such a great concept, I only ordered cocktails so can’t speak for the food, but the selection available was really nice to see :)! So quirky but highly professional, staff seemed genuinely enthusiastic about their jobs and were happy to repeat the same orders which I’m sure they’ve done hundred of times with the nice flare and excellent customer service. The menus were really easy to navigate and had a super posh flare. Highly recommend, a tad expensive but to be expected for the novelty.

The drinks here are amazing. So much variety that’s it hard to pick. The colour changing drinks, smoky drinks are so much fun. The food is good too. I’d describe it as bar finger food. This is the sort of bar that should be all about presentation and theatre, instead it felt they were just going through the motions and just pushing the drinks over the bar to you. Was great from beginning to end, jimothy walked us through all the cocktails and made sure we had the best experience for our suited taste,very original and Soo good! Jim could sell dirt to a miner if he tried and happily sold us every cocktail we required he even knew which ones were for show and which ones were for taste so props to Jim and we haven't even mentioned his outfit yet which deserves a review of its own! Will be coming back for special occasions and the downstairs is Soo much better than upstairs it felt like a different place altogether!

After hearing all the hype surrounding the cocktails, we figured it was about time we tried for ourselves. First off, I had the prawn on skewers starter followed by katsu chicken curry with a side of mac n cheese. My friend went for one og their fsnius steak and cheese burgers wirh salt and pepper fries. After eating we honestly found our meal to be a little bland. Then the cocktails... Wow! Very expensive but worth every penny. They are fascinating to look at the flames, bubbling, sizzling and they taste amazing. From arrival the staff were nice but two in particular were in shift Sunday afternoon (6th Oct) around 4ish. Both had blonde hair and one left around 5. Either way Thankyou both for being attentive and helpful. Your service was appreciated Will be returning again for cocktails, very soon

18th September we had a revisit thank you to Anca the Manager, who took our feedback very seriously. We had a lovely time with Evanda being our waiter who was extremely professional. It was a pleasure to return and have an enjoyable afternoon lunch. Thank you Anca, Evanda and the wider team. 22nd July 2021 @ 2.30pm good food, average service, whilst overall the service was as expected, it was unfortunate that one table staff made it clear with tone of voice, lack of interest, poor engagement that she just didn't want to be there and as customers, we felt we were an inconvenience as all limited communication was a tone of process when making the drinks at the table. she made a sharing drink for two but then took back one of the cup's to drink from, we had to wait about 10mins for another cup, therefore the sharing experience fell short. I don't think its fair to name the individual table staff but it was a female, short blonde hair about 5'6" - average build. I would kindly ask - as humans we all have days where we are not our positive selves but please think about the awful impression you have on customers that may not want to rush back as Birmingham is a growing city with plenty of great places to eat and drink. thank you to the young man who made our drinks at the table who clearly enjoys working there and you could see this in the excitement

I’m a fan of this chain from my time living in Manchester, but this is by far the best one in terms of customer service. I met a friend here for lunch yesterday and ended up staying for 10 hours!! We were served by a lovely Lithuanian girl (if I remember correctly) and as the dining are wasn’t too busy we were allowed to stay at the table longer than normal and ordered additional nibbles when we got more drinks. It was so nice not to be rushed off the table. The staff were very knowledgeable about the drink and the mixologists were able to make us off menu drinks which was fantastic. There was a DJ playing chilled house and it really added to the atmosphere. We both had a really great day, and night!

My partner and I went for his birthday the other week. We both had the fried chicken and fries, which was fresh and cooked to perfection; very enjoyable. We also had two different cocktails, one whiskey-based, the other coffee-based. I'm no expert on cocktails-they were chosen pretty much at random-but they were most enjoyable. Service was very good. Our bill came to £60 in all, most of which was for the cocktails-so not a cheap night, but worth it for the quality and surroundings-it's certainly not somewhere chavs would go. Clientele was mostly youngish educated professionals. Definitely recommended for a classy evening out.

Great graphics on the menus and a cosy industrial design didn't make up for the slow and clumsy service here. With less than half the covers full, our soft drinks took ages and were mainly ice, our food arrived after 90 minutes charred and with additions that we had not asked for - blue cheese packs quite a punch when it's not expected! - and when we raised it with staff they we're dismissive and rude. The menu itself had a lot of choice, and on previous occasions the food has been more enjoyable. Based on experience I would suggest this branch is better for specialist drinks and nibbles than an eating experience.

The Alchemist is a great bar! The cocktails are amazing and have a real fun element to them. For me it fulfilled my childhood dream of being a mad scientist making potions and accidentally blowing up my lab. Luckily there were no explosions. Starters were amazing and make my mouth water just thinking about them. Unfortunately my main (chicken in a basket) wasn't great. The chicken was dry and lacked real flavor. However this didn't ruin the experience and we had a great night. The service was also great with very knowledgeable serving staff. All of which had a smile and was very helpful. Would definitely go back!

I then had fish with sweet potato fries, which comes with two pieces of fish. The fish is very light and crispy but the fries weren't that sweet, not a big deal. On our second visit we ordered cockails, which were amazing, and ramen soups (have tried few ramens in different places before). Soups looked very nice, ingredients were tasty, but stock was oversalted, it was impossible to eat, dissapointing. In overall, this place is great!

Went there with a group of friends on busy Sunday afternoon. We had originally gone in for something from the brunch menu but they had stopped serving. I opted for the siracha sauce wings, the chicken basket and sweet potato fries and it was a delight. One of my friends' burger came out burnt but they took it away and came back instantly with a nice fresh one. If you don't like the idea trying different food and steam-punky scientific drinks and want to stay traditional then don't go...simple. Just don't give these guys a bad rating for things so LITTLE and Ridiculous. 5*****!

A social, smart bar/restaurant in the classy section of Birmingham City Centre. The menu is ecclectic: there are Mexican, Japanese or European dishes. I went for a more Japanese influenced trio (gyoza, seafood udon and a desert). What sets apart this venue from any other I've been to is the drama when the food is served. Just like its name sake, at times the restaurant feels like a laboratory thanks to cocktails and broth based foods being served with smoky dry ice. Although the service was friendly, it would be great if there was a little more urgency to it. It would be great for the laboratory theme to be applied to the look and feel of the surroundings and serving staff. Overall, quality food, great price served with a dash of pantomime. With a little more urgency, the lab theme more deeply routed into the occasion, it would be an "explosive" experience.

I booked The Alchemist for a lunch time meal with my year 6 old twins and was a bit worried it wouldn't be child friendly as there was no childrens menu to view online. It turns out there was nothing to worry about as there is a fab childrens menu which included a Bento box of Chicken strips, fries, peas or beans cheesy nachos and crudites followed by a pudding all for £6. Ther children were also given a little activity pack which they loved. Would highly recommend for lunch with Children. The cocktails and food were great for adults too 😁
