Reviews of The Old Joint Stock Pub & Theatre, Birmingham
L. E.
Staff are friendly, decor is fine, and the atmosphere is good if you're just going for a drink, but if you're going for a bite to eat it's just way too busy/hectic/noisy, and for a place that's supposed to be known for their pies, their pies aren't very good. I've been on a number of work dos here and the buffet pies they have served have been better than the pies from the menu, however I only recently tried the pies from the menu so the quality could have just declined since I last had the buffet.
The biggest disappointment about the pies is the size of them, but to their credit, the steak and ale pie had a good amount of steak in it for its size. The flavour wasn't anything to write home about, in fact the Stargazy pie was far FAR too salty, so with their sub par flavour and small size, they were very disappointing.
Finally I don't think that sticking a pawn on top of a pie makes a Stargazy pie... Where are the fish heads!?!?

Fantastic building and interior, now run by Fullers. We went in Saturday around 3, had to queue to get in. You would have to pre book to get a table to eat comfortably, otherwise you go into hawk mode and pounce on a table as soon as you see people putting coats on. We had a lager and Guinness, £10.95, no food, but what we saw going out, sandwiches and chips didn't look very appetising... Well staffed and clean. Great location.

Excellent food and drink in the centre of Birmingham City. If you're not a regular or a Brit, you'll definitely have problems the menu. There are vegan and vegetarian items for non Meat Eaters. The service is pleasant and the food is served without a long waiting time. Note the closing time of the kitchen as post that time, only the bar is open

Our first visit in this amazing gem, wow I was blown away with how stunningly beautiful this pub/theatre is. So old but very grand indeed with lovely friendly staff, very clean and tidy ...... in fact its the best pub I've been in in Birmingham. Will definitely come back here again and highly recommend.
s. H.
Wonderful venue with alot of heritage. The bar was clean tidy and presentable. We were able to order our drinks on an order and pay app which was very handy. Drinks were very tasty and good value for money. The app didn't seem to work when we ordered a second round, either it had been cut off due to it being busy or we had a technical issue I don't know. We went to the bar and got served pretty quick.
Will 100% be returning here in the near future.
J. C.
Lovely pub with fantastic old features kept. Good choice of ales and lagers.
Cashless transactions only.
E. H.
Favourite restaurant and pub in Birmingham. Best location where just walk distance from Birmingham New Street station, the signature Tasting Board is a great value and must try!
L. O.
Amazing traditional pies. If you fancy something light, grab a mini pie!
Good service, good beer selection (Camden off-menu was great), table ordering app etc.
I'm planning a return visit to check out a show at their theatre.... and grab a pie, obviously!
C. I.
This place is gorgeous in photos and in person! I went for drinks on a Sunday afternoon. They don't have a drink menu so the barman gave us recommendations. I had my first Aperol Spritz and absolutely loved it! The atmosphere is perfect for a relaxed drink and chat with friends. I would definitely visit again to see one of the shows they put on in the theatre.
M. A.
Old haunt...nice environment to have a drink in. I don't get out to big cities much and was shocked at price of a round of two double g n t s here....25 quid!! If you are a regular city drinker maybe that's normal?
B. W.
Staff were friendly and efficient. We had a mini pie which was nice, however the gravy wasn't as advertised and they should consider adding a small amount of veg with this meal.
There was a great atmosphere and the place was nice and clean. I would definitely go again.
S. H.
Great atmosphere and perfect for a nice sit down pint of the good stuff. PS what a beautiful building
J. R.
We were planning to go to Gusto for lunch but couldn't get in. So we went across the road and were pleased that we did. Ambience and food was good. We look forward to our next visit. (Marked down only because the bar area was a tad on the cool side).
P. H.
Very busy and popular pub.
Pleasant and friendly staff.
Great choice of beers, wines & spirits.
Good food available from cooked meals to pies and sandwiches.
All available at current Birmingham city centre prices though.
M. 2.
Roomy pub with excellent choice of beers and good food, moderate prices
S. S.
It was ok, quite busy when we went, ordered on the app. Dinner plonked on the table, no finesse as you would expect for the price. Tasted good though
N. N.
Wow, where do I start. What an amazing place. The ambience is beautiful and the staff are very attentive. The food is tasty and the menu has a variety of pub food classics ie pie and mash which was absolutely lush. The staff really do provide an outstanding service and our orders arrived in good time. It’s also wonderful how the manager will personally greet you and ask if all is well. Will most definitely be returning time and time again.
J. J.
I went here for some food which I waited a while for. They acknowledged this before I had to complain, they offered us free deserts and drinks (which we were happy to accept) . 3 staff members apologised on separate occasions for the incident. Very well handled. I didn't even have complain.
J. R.
Always loved this vibrant, busy, city centre pub. Haven't been there for a while and had forgotten how expensive the drinks are compared with my local. However, it doesn't put me off going. Quite the opposite. Start of a good night out.
P. T.
Excellent pub facing the square. High decorative ceiling and 360 degree island bar. Good selection of beers. Enjoyed the steak pie, worth a very buttery texture.
D. D.
The only positive of the last two years of covid is the pure enjoyment of going out and enjoying a pub with people in a lively place. Perfect location to meet up, have fun and live life again.
m. j.
Cool building, decor amazing, good selection of draught ales and beers.
A. F.
Beautiful pub, restaurant and theater with splendid interior and an impressive upstair dinning area .
Good selection of beers, nice food, but a bit of a long wait.
Warm and welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff.
We sat on the window and had a great view of the park and the cathedral.
Overall, it's worth a visit.
M. R.
Was here three years ago and all was excellent.
Great building and the decor is sumptuous.
Unfortunately yesterday's visit was spoilt by staff who didn't know or didn't want to assist in navigating a non existent wine list.
Will definitely return and head to different staff members for service.
W. P.
Lovely old pub excellent real àles and wine great atmosphere
D. R.
Great beer. Fantastic customer service. Clean facilities and amazing structure to spend time in, with ur friends and loved ones 👍🏼🙏🏼❤️
C. H.
Hi. I just popped in for a pint with a friend
What a beautiful pub to have a drink . Didn't have time for a meal as waiting for a train . But have had a pie here before and was very good
L. K.
Beautiful building and lovely place to go for a drink. Christmas by candlelight is amazing and definitely worth going, however found drinks to be very expensive and currently no cash accepted, card payment only which may not suit everyone.
D. S.
All good! decor impressive, service good and beer well kept but the price! £6:30 for a pint of ale! 😳
M. S.
A Fuller's pub with pretty much the entire range of their beers either on draught or by the bottle. A truly stunning venue, which was a bank in years gone by. There is a theatre towards the back of the building too. Possibly the most impressive drinking establishment in Birmingham.
E. F.
Is there anyone who would not order this on a menu? The best of all worlds? The closest thing to trying everything? Is this not the meaning of life? This place really deserves 5 stars for the cool interior, friendly staff and tasting board. Great spot
H. M.
We had a surprise party here and the staff were very accommodating and helpful. The beers are good and atmosphere is great
B. K.
Huge vaulted ceilings give this place such a feeling of glamour! Loads of space with plenty of rooms inside and an outdoor section that is just the perfect sun trap. Huge amount of drink choices will see you coming back many times, though good luck finding a space or moving around when the large crowds are there, so get in quick!
M. B.
The drinks selection was fantastic, as were the staff. What a beautiful place, I will be returning again and again.
T. M.
Good service, good choice, good value, and lovely interior. Only let down was the poor quality of the toilets. The hand pumps had been ripped off the soap, with pee and wet toilet paper all over the place.
P. H.
Fantastic elaborate setting close to Snow Hill train station. Large circular bar area serving huge array of beers and ales on tap. Decent gin menu as well. Really good atmosphere and would not hesitate to come back.
M. F.
Absolute cracker of a bar excellent decor and brilliant choice of beers. Staff where very friendly. The place does food but never tried it on this occasion
J. C.
Love this place great beer great atmosphere
M. K.
Very good atmosphere once again! Not crowded after 4 pm and very quick and attentive service. Will visit again.
L. B. (. B.
Really nice place.
The theatre upstairs has some great productions, have been a few times now and always impressed. It's very cramped so not too comfortable, but you can put that aside for the quality and enjoyment of the rest of the experience.
The pub area downstairs is great to spend time in, especially if you can get some of the big comfy chairs! Nice beer selection and very cosy.
Beautiful building and lovely restoration to original style and decor.
Staff are always really nice and friendly too.
S.
Great place! Exquisite interior and delicious food. Staff are helpful and friendly.
J. K.
Great pub with great beer. Very busy on a Saturday afternoon but managed to get in. Looking forward to another visit
D. L. (.
Great pub, fantastic food, great vibe
R. S.
Nice place for drinks and food.
I had the burger which was good but I would have liked some more salad on the plate. Maybe I should have ordered that in the side not sure.
The desert was good too and they have a great beer selection.
J. J.
Brilliant place with loads to see .the food menu looks great and the portion sizes were ample.i would definitely recommend that you pay a visit.
A. T.
One of my favourite city center pubs. Feels super classy without the super classy prices. Also the pies are incredible.
S. W.
Everyone has spoken about how nice the building is (and it is) so I won't post any photos of it.. The food is fantastic also so I will.. Pulled lamb shoulder Shepard's pie.. We went 2 days running because it was so nice.. Thinking of going for lunch today too..
N. W. Y.
Another enjoyable visit, great beer, staff and food in a lovely old building.
D. F.
Great pub with an old theatre up stairs showing different performances..great atmosphere. I saw steamy bingo wasn't sure what to expect but it delivered an evening of non stop laughter and fun.
R. W.
Love this pub. It always reminds me of a traditional London pub but much bigger. I think it was an old bank but regardless it's impressive. Totally recommend 👌 👍
J. H.
Absolutely brilliant! The pies we had were so delicious, the mash was perfect, and everything else was very good! The atmosphere is so comfortable, clean and beautiful!
t. g.
1st catch up since Covid.. Celebrating 38yrs of friendship.. Perfik 👌
D. B.
For a Friday, the food was served pretty quickly
Is very expensive for portion size, wouldn't deem as filling
They did check allergies before ordering, which is pretty rare
G. Y.
Went along to a Gin Tasting event that was being hosted in one of the upstairs rooms. Saturday evening and the downstairs bar area was literally heaving, so fought our way through to the rear to access the stairs. The place is stunning with its Victorian decor and large island bar - but... really need to sort out the toilet area, which was dominated by the smell of urine :-(
B. J.
Great Gastro pub by St Phillip's Cathedral. Balcony dining area looking down on the bar.
Lovely interior. Good service and food. Linked to a theatre as well. Only downside is mid day parking!
J. O.
Scenic place to have a drink in town with a decent range of drinks to offer. Usually very busy and a little understaffed at peak times meaning a long old wait to get served.
j. W.
Friday night can get a bit busy people tend to drink! The atmosphere looks rather cool interior gets you wondering how do they clean it! I had pies and friends have sample pies with ale and mussels! They seems to enjoy it so do I!
B. B.
Even though when we asked one of the female bar staff, "is the theatre up the back stairs" she looked at us as if we asked her if she likes purple custard this is a cool little theatre 🎭
T. F.
Theatre experience was enjoyable and the private bar was a nice touch.
The chairs in the Theatre were too tightly packed in though and were so uncomfortable.
M. G.
Fantastic place, clean and food was great really enjoyed it will definitely go again
S. d.
Popped into the Joint stock yesterday. Always a pleasure to have a bite to eat and a few drinks whilst shopping in Brum. As usual the drinks were perfect as was the food. The pub is spotlessly clean and is just great to relax and chat in. The gaffer is a really welcoming jovial and nice chap to talk to and makes you want to return. My wife and I really enjoyed ourselves. All too often we complain about poor service at other venues but this guy and his staff deserve a positive mention....... They're a credit to the pub owners.
All in all a cracking pub. Highly recommend it.
L. C.
Cast were exceptionally tallented. As well as the staff being extra kind and friendly. The venue was spectacular and architecture was stunning to gaze upon. Anyone thinking of visiting you would be a fool not too. Great idea for a date.
P. T.
Loce going to this Fullers pub. Its a great place to meet friends in the City Centre.
As expected, excellent real ales available.
The building itself is very interesting as it use d to be a bank.
The ceiling dome is impressive
I liked the Christmas tree - seasonal visit.
H. L.
Epic building, reasonable pub. Could be more worthy of it's impressive surroundings.
G. C.
Phenomenal experience. The place decoration is stunning. Amazing food, atmosphere, and staff. Have been here multiple times, and every time is an amazing experience all around. You should definitely order the pie tasting board, an excellent ale and pie experience. I always take my out of town guests here, as the food is always superb. Sadly doesn't have too many vegan options, but has some vegetarian options.
D. B.
A beautiful pub in the centre of Birmingham. From its high ceiling to the oval bar in the middle. Beautifully decorated for Christmas. Loads of real ales to choose from.
E. D.
Lovely staff and a great selection of drinks, fabulous architecture recommended visit in Birmingham
R. W.
A very busy vibrant pub with a great atmosphere don't forget the hidden pub down the stairs at the rear yard (The Wellington) 👍
O. J.
Went in to this place with a friend for a drink. I liked the look of it that much I came back for food two days later. Fish and chips the portion was was generous and the mushy peas were amazing. Also its a lovely building to sit in
D. M.
Megan provided exceptional service; really made me feel at home. Great product at -acceptable- prices for the interior.
Amazing venue.
r. w.
Awesome place, very good staff, extremely good cut of steak and we'll prepared , let down by details. Led to a table for 1 - not prepared no glasses or set out most unwelcome. I ate on upper floor and middle console of bar clearly filthy in dust (skin mainly). Service very good but only 1 member of staff clearly stressed. Generally starts and mains good choice dessert very limited. I chose squid and steak - which honestly were excellent, I said I'd like to compliment the chef genuinely but nobody appeared and no explanation - it was a genuine compliment. The cut of meat was prepared rare as I asked for and was consistent throughout well cut , cooked and presented 😃 the best steak I have eaten in a long time. The dessert choice was poor 4 or so and the lemon torte I ate didn't really taste of lemon. Coffee ok not sure if Lavazza or not. A £50 meal , not bad but not amazing and management should take a closer look in my recommendation - depends on where Fullers are trying to pitch but consistently not worth that amount, clearly good staff and an excellent chef but let down by management to take to market. Would I eat there again ? Yes but not for the dining experience the setting could command
S. M.
A beautiful building, comfortable seating, the staff were excellent.
M. S.
Brilliant location and really interesting to read about historically. Loved the interior of this venue and the atmosphere. Only been here a few times for drinks but am yet to experience the theatre or food. Will 100% be returning to try and do so
M. S.
Great service and surroundings. There is a wide range of drinks and a very decent food menu. Staff were very welcoming and helpful. The central locations makes this pub great for heading to other activities or a few more drinks somewhere else. They found a table for our group even though we did not book on a Friday at 6.30pm which was amazing.
S. W.
Came here as the Christmas decorations made the place look beautiful. Had the chilli beef brisket pie, which was lovely and very filling. The atmosphere was relaxed and cosy, and the staff were really nice and attentive.
I.
Lovely inside with a glass dome on the roof. Popular place so busy most times.
S. G.
The place is great. Old world style, great service, fantastic range of ale and larger and gin.. .... could spend many hours in here. Food isn't bad either, it's a pub so the food is in that vein, but it is still good quality ingredients. Definately will visit again.
C. P.
Bostin pub, was amazed at the decor, very friendly staff.
Can't wait for my next visit.
S. T.
Beautiful old building with a central bar. Around 4 Fuller's cask & a couple of guests. Beer was well kept. Plenty of seating & friendly staff. Picked up a couple of boxed bottles for home.
D. F.
Beautiful place and atmosphere
Food was amazing and good portions
C. B.
A renovated bank, now a pub with theatre. Beautiful interior with high ceiling. Warm inside in winter with good atmosphere. This place always seems busy but if you go past the bar there is a smaller room tucked away with 6 or so large tables for diners to enjoy their meal. The crowd is older (30+) with a good set of security people who ensure everyone is able to have a good time.
The food was good. I had the fish finger sandwich which was nice but greasier than expected. Feedback from my fellow diners was that the tikka mini pie on this occasion was a bit dry and the mushroom mini pie was just potatoes and no mushrooms. However, when you get the trio of mini pies it is served on a wooden contraption with a flight of 3 small ales which is a lovely way to enjoy a variety of pies and beers.
N. D.
Amazing fish&chips and pies, great variety of ales. Nice service too. And place is really charming. Must go place in Birmingham!
N. T.
A beautiful building both outside and in, with a high domed ceiling. Central bar area with plenty to choose from with very good service from the staff. Pies are their speciality and they are super tasty, great crusty pastry and various fillings to choose. Various other option such as Venison Shank, burgers etc.
c. T.
Have to give 5 stars simply because of the service, we had the steak and ale pie with mash and it was excellent, the place itself is a fantastic building, Jackie behind the bar instantly made us feel welcome and looked after us fantastically, definitely will return
C. c.
Popped in for a drink and meal. Very interesting place. Staff were very helpful in checking out the menu for certain aliges.
S. T.
Amazing place but unpleasant wine. amazing building and lovely staff as well as good biers.
R. C.
This is my favourite pub in Birmingham, I've not tried the food but the selection of drinks is good and the architecture inside is amazing
D. C.
Maybe subjective, but I think this is probably the best pub in Birmingham. Fantastic surroundings, great beer, good food, friendly staff, loads of space... what more is there?
S. R.
Ok, but to busy for me as the bar was packed and took 20mins to get served. Definitely won't be going back.
L. L.
Beautiful building. Visited in the day so service was quick and spent most of my time looking at my surroundings. Lovely place.
P. s.
Good service and wonderfully polite bartenders, fantastic selection of drinks from ale to wine to cider and pretty much most spirits you'd like. always a great atmosphere evening or daytime. Also on a personal point they have pork scratchings a much for a pub in my opinion
S. P.
Fuller's pubs aren't my first choice, but it's hard not to like this venue so I usually pop in for a pint of London Pride. It's a cracking building, and they offer up a lovely pie too!
J. T.
A totally different atmosphere, a real touch of grandeur while still a friendly bar, food a bit on the pricey side though
L. E.
A fantastic pub. Friendly staff and the food was great. Definitely worth a visit!
B. R.
Lovey place, but been a city bar drinks quit dear. Still worth a visit 🍻🥳
A. K.
Staff very attentive and friendly. Place itself looks amazing, lovely setting for some drinks.
B. B.
Great staff, nice pint, lovely setting.. Real character.
D. A.
Perfect place for relaxing and drinking a coffee.
G. T.
A very busy pub. Fullers beer either on top or in a bottle. Other beers available. Food has a great variety and was served quickly.
P. B.
OK, Fumo prices but without the ambience or clientlelle, but open to all.
P. H.
When I went into the old joint pub for a drink with family, it was relaxing and staff were very hospitalite and helping.
G. M.
Little shop of horrors!
When you walk in you will think what have I booked here? It can’t be any good being so small and no much effects, but trust me this is one the plays I’ve seen, I normally go for the big stage, but here the small cast blows you away, it’s gets better as the story unfolds, Audreyto (the plant) steals the show, but all the cast are amazing,
Such a good night I need to go again.
D. Y.
Like the place, good selection of ales, nice environment, friendly staff
d. e.
Good atmosphere, friendly staff. Can't comment on the food as we didn't eat there.
S. G.
Had the mince beef onion pie it was superb and good choice of lagers and Ales
S. A.
Beautiful building with an impressive beer selection to match 👌 I'll be back
C. 2.
Haven’t tried their food yet but the deco is amazing. The play in the theatre above is good, my husband and I love going there on our date night.
L. T.
Lovely place, great atmosphere.
Staff are amazing , friendly and provide and excellent service.
Will defo be my go to place🙂
R. L.
Beautiful place to have a lovely drink and food. Not too far to walk to train station or the main shopping centre
C. M.
Busy ,,nice to see people out and about again pity about the card only service though ,,cash is still in people's pockets,,,or is it an elitist thing
j. r.
Went to Little shop of horrors the cast were excellent and show really good. Made good use of such a small space.dont be put off that it's in pub. planning to go to other performances.
J. O.
Lovely pub with a great atmosphere. The pie and chips are delicious.
R. W.
Had a lovely G&T and great catch up with friends. Lovely atmosphere.
S. M.
Went on a Saturday evening and it was so quiet with no atmosphere. Horrendously high drink prices so that's probably why..
J. O.
The place its self is lovely, but the staff (one in particular) needs to sort their people skills out.. Ignorant and rude..
I won't be back..
I. M.
Go to pub in BRM. Airy, huge ceilings, spacious but gets very busy. The comfier Chesterfield furniture has gone, which is a shame. Fullers beers always in great shape.
P. B.
One of Birmingham's best bars. Proper pub with a good atmosphere.
M. k.
Very busy, but staff quick to serve drinks, beautiful decor & building, good atmosphere.
J. C.
One of my favourite pubs in town. Great choice and quality of Fuller's ales and we have never had a bad meal here. Great looking pub too with a relatively unknown first floor theatre offering something different to Birmingham's entertainment scene.
P. S.
Nice pub and good beer. First pint of London Pride in a while.
M. C.
Great pub. Looks magnificent. Really nice food too
G. L.
We had a lovely time in their beer garden, the staff were really good and a special mention to Clinton who was really funny and kept our glasses filled, the only thing to make it perfect is put lots more cheese on the nachos 👌
M. S.
Great atmosphere and ambience 🙂
d.
Great café! Very nice interieur, trendy public, nice drinks and warm atmosphere!
L. A.
It's kinda pricey... But it's a really nice looking place, that old school vibe! Staff are pleasant enough too... But there are other places I'd think to go before here I'm totally honest
T. B.
Visited over Christmas had a quiet drink really nice place
L. H.
Great atmosphere and served by excellent staff, one in particular called Alex, would highly recommend eating here too. Perfect all round venue!
L. A. D.
Very nice and cosy place. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Also, it is important to mention they are following the distancing measures, which made me feel safe and definitely a place worth of going during these pandemic times.
J. H.
Absolutely beautiful pies and delicious ales to go along side. Great service and very filling. Couldn't be more delighted!
V. H.
Beautiful building, good service, excellent food, would definitely go back again.
A. F.
A relaxing place for a good pint of Fullers Ales.. good food.. the Pie and Ale Taster was really nice.. can get busy at times..
D.
Does not accept cash for its very expensive drinks? This should be looked into most people pay cash and the restrictions are nearly over unbelievable really.
J. D.
Amazing architecture and history all preserved. Great atmosphere
J. H.
Great range of beers, quick service and comfortable atmosphere.
J. M.
Lovely pub. Had a drink there during our day out in Birmingham. Sat at a window seat. Beautiful interior of the building which was a former bank. Staff friendly and efficient. Will visit again
B. S.
A place for pies.... the food was honest and hot. Home made and good value. The place itself is a very impressive concerted bank. Chirpy bar staff too.
C. L.
Absolutely wonderful gem of a pub with great service and cracking food. Now our must visit place when in Brum. If you like hearty food and a relaxed atmosphere, in a beautiful building - this is the place you need to go to!
J. O.
Good beer - Veltins on tap which you don't see often and it's better than most.
M. T.
Good selection of beers but 2nd time I've been here are the food hasn't been very good.
R. T.
The pub is just beautiful, excellent range of drinks and helpful staff. The theatre is a wonderful addition and I really enjoyed the show there.
C. B.
Absolutely loved the building, decor inside. Busy on a Saturday
R. M.
One of the most amazing pubs I have been in for the decor. Fuller's beer choice us good too.
A. G.
Busy, lively pub. Good food and fair price .
R. M.
Lovely old bank/ pub, good selection of drinks.. give it a go.
h.
Great pub set in a theatre style building. Good crowd too!
E. M.
Great building, lovely interiors, and very friendly helpful staff. There is a garden too. A nice place for a leisurely afternoon drink.
a.
Great atmosphere and decor, really bad food.
P. C.
Pop here regularly for a cheeky pint and quality food. Can't fault it.
d. h.
Have had lunch at this beautiful old pub twice now and have not been disappointed. They have a nice selection of ales and serve just about the nicest pies you could wish for. My last visit was 16/10/19 where once again I enjoyed a lovely pint of ale and a hand crafted steak and ale pie. Delicious. Would have been 5 stars but it is a little pricey....
C. B.
Great pub with good atmosphere and great ales.
C. S.
The chicken main @14 pounds...fabulous...presentation excellent..taste great...value for money
S. A.
Staff food and drink all magnificent. Loved the vibe.
V. B.
An architecturally beautiful building. Just look upwards when you arrive. Spectacular.
Great atmosphere, good service and friendly staff.
B. T.
What a great place! Fantastic fish and chips and a menu that covers everyone's favorite British cuisine.
K. T.
Great experience, friendly staff, stunning interior and great beer
R. J.
I visited this fabulous, crowded place last weekend ! The building and its interior are impressive. l met nice people. There was a great atmosphere. I want to praise a young girl from Poland working behind the bar. I think her name was Carolina. She had a professional and friendly manner, greeting customers with a smile and helping by giving great natural service. Even though hard work she demonstrates enthusiasm to do what is right for customers. Thanks to her I felt more as welcome.

Four of us went here on a Thursday night for some food. The downstairs bar area was packed but we were kindly shown to the tables up stairs. The food was delicious (we all had pie) and the guy serving us (unfortunately did not get his name) was superb. Nothing was too much trouble for him and you really felt he wanted us to have the best time possible without it feeling forced. Would highly recommended based on the service as well as the food!
K. &. R. C.
Very good enjoyable evening meal and theatre performance. Staff were excellent and a lovely atmosphere in the pub.Would have given 5 stars but food not great. My wife ordered the chilli, butternut squash tomato. Meal was totally unbalanced, about 80% spinach, with very little squash. Similarly the apple and almond tart was very tasty, but accompanied by a tiny amount of custard. Having said that overall we had a great evening
G. L.
Always pop here when I'm in Birmingham! Propper pies with liqour! Can't get that now I've moved from London
y.
Amazing place -card only payments -full of character pub
R. W.
Great time at this pub , nice pint of London Pride .
A. G.
We hadn't booked, but because of the time we got there, we were fortunate to get a table that was free for a couple of hours. Staff were very friendly and it was great to see the new layout.
A. R.
Great atmosphere, decent beer and fair prices. Food has always been good along with great service.
J. R.
Lovely surroundings and the best and only curry pie I've ever had
V. H.
A historic buildings that never fails to wow people who go for the first time it has a theatre upstairs for small productions. Very busy and full of atmosphere. OPP the cathedral always worth popping into as too a beautiful building.
D. C.
Brilliant historic building used as excellent pub...and theatre.
C. B.
Very easy to drink too much good beer in here... Gets v busy but it's a good atmosphere helped by the theatrical decor
N. P.
Always a lovely place for a pint in Birmingham
G. B.
Love Fuller's but lack of sparklers. We are in the Midlands !!
M. S.
Fabulous staff, so positive. Food was great.
c. p.
Good choice of beers , good ambience & very clean amenities 👍
N. S.
This place is absolutely gorgeous inside, especially around Christmas! The atmosphere is lovely and sophisticated. It is very cosy and welcoming, its great for having a few drinks with family. We are coming to see a production at their theatre next month, I haven't seen a show here yet so I am excited to see what it is like.
B. T.
This is a great old pub but I actually went upstairs to the small theatre. It holds about 100 people and is ideal for small intimate Shows and launching new productions. It has its own small bar and it makes a great night out. Situated in the centre of Birmingham with easy access to public transport and car parks.
a. k.
Went to see Little Shop of Horrors in a tiny theatre upstairs. The show was incredible, such a talented cast!

My groups' experiences at The Old Joint Stock have always been excellent. Whether it's a couple of pints of ale in good company, or a meal (their pies are second to none). You get the feeling you've just stepped into another time. The classic style and hand-carved features of the interior make it something very special. Atmosphere is very relaxed. You can sit on the balcony overlooking the pub floor if your party is there for a meal. The staff are excellent. The chef had put blade of beef on the menu when we went and it was one of the best cuts I've eaten. Thank you to Paul the waiter for your excellent service. He handled his tasks seemingly effortlessly and made us feel at ease. We will come again.
M. L.
Great food, friendly and helpful staff.
S. M.
AMAZING pies. Like absolutely unreal. Really nice venue with massive tall ceilings a d a lovely little theatre where I saw Sam Carlyle.
M. J.
Excellent traditional quirky pub offering great selection of beers. I often have business meetings in this church always impresses my professional clients
P. M.
Love this pub.. It's a beautie
D. B.
Probably the most impressive bar/restaurant in Birmingham. Has beautiful high ceilings and a fantastic array of seating. Is a theatre as well, has brilliant views. Service is friendly and have a good range of drinks. One of the other great features of this pub/theatre was the high ceilings giving it a more prestigious look about it. I like the old fashioned decor about this place, definitely worth going back there again.
G. R.
Lovely place great atmosphere. Good beers and service
S.
Huge place. Excellent selection of drinks and very friendly staff. I also ate there and was expecting pretty standard food - but I was delighted when I got served with one of the most delicious and well made pies I have ever eaten. Top quality stuff, I 0lam to return just for the grub.
M. M.
This is my favourite pub in Birmingham. Beautiful interior and just a great atmosphere.
Also their food is good. Staff are polite and helpful.
Disabled access is poor as I have a disabled friend who though their stair lift was a death trap.
L. J.
I was taken back when I entered this establishment.. what a place it is.. expensive but VERY nice.. definitely middle - upper-class and a place I'd visit again. 🍀
D. K.
A wonderful place to eat and drink
Unfortunately my husband was taken ill while we were there on Saturday evening. The staff were fabulous and quickly moved us to a quiet area and called the paramedics. The manger Paul stayed with us for the 2 hours my husband was being treated. He has now recovered. The food is wholesome and tasty and the beer great but the staff make this a great place to be. You would not be disappointed. We will be back thanks to all Diane Keen
K. K.
We had a mix up with our reservation (our fault) but they managed to squeeze us in, a table of 7 on a busy Friday night. Amazing service! Food was brilliant. My friends from overseas loved the traditional decor inside and selection of traditional foods. Thank you!
L. T.
Lovely old pub full of character. Clean and well run with attentive staff and friendly service. Very well organised and felt comfortable. Guinness was exceptionally good.
M. R.
Overlooking the Cathedral this pub is a find. A wonderfully ornate interior due in no small part to its other incarnation as a theatre. It's a Fullers pub with a couple of decent guest ales. Friendly staff and good pub food. Well worth the trip.
A.
Nice bar, nice staff.
One of the only places in Birmingham I buy Guinness.
S. O.
I've had mixed experiences here. Mostly really good but on occasion far too slow. The pub, which is decorated beautifully and worth a visit just for a look, is usually rammed on a Friday night which sometimes means there's a wait at the bar. However, I've waited longer on a quiet day which is bizarre. This may well be down to individual staff on the busy times just being good though.
Food is excellent and good value. Beer and spirit selection is also varied.
They have really interesting performances upstairs in the built in theatre so overall it's definitely worth a visit.
Would recommend!
C. “. F.
Had a meal here with a small group on a Sunday, mid month. It's a beautiful building with interesting and large, high ceiling interior. There were a mixture of dining tables and high backed leather armchairs which fitted in well with the overall decor. The food we ordered came quite quickly and was of a medium portion size. I personally thought the price was a tad steep for the size.
J. W.
Another great afternoon, love this pub
M. B. (.
The food and comfy atmosphere was perfect for sunday lunch. Th really helpful and friendly manager Carlton is the best.
S. P.
Great pub in the heart of Birmingham. A fantastic building with a great atmosphere. The food is very good and always well cooked. They have an amazing selection of beers and also gins. Highly recommended.
J. K.
Been coming here for I dont know how many years and performed upstairs as well. Always love coming here as all the staff make you feel so welcome and loved and part of the family. Irrelevant of how long its been or how long it's been since you've last been there.
The food is always to such a high standard and always perfect, I've never had such a lovely and always brilliant meal!
The theatre upstairs is so lovely and intimate it's nice to have the personal feel and feel part of the show with them which is what makes this theatre venue so special.
You can see all the actors are all dedicated to the performance they are giving which is quite refreshing from all the amateur performances you see where companies are going 'through the montions' nowadays.
I always look forward to my next visit to there and cant wait to go in again!!
J. H.
Great to get a decent pint of Fullers in the heart of Birmingham. Big place, good atmosphere, and I quite like this table service idea
P. s. W.
Live music today, a must visit bar if in Birmingham, good selection of beers and ales, one of the more pricier places though
S. P. (.
It's a very pretty pub and theatre. I haven't used the theatre yet but I'm going to Trump to musical later this month. This also hosted Boris Johnson the musical and other comedy shows. It's a little pricey for the drinks but everything else it nice :) Theatre tickets are a good price at £15 each.
l. m.
Amazing pub. Looks very nice
P. M.
A beautiful pub. Plenty of real ale and ciders in good condition. Food a little pricey and quality not great. Often busy, particularly at lunchtime, and bar service can be slow. Saved by the decor and atmosphere. Also has an in house theatre with interesting productions.
M. D.
Great pub with a good selection of drinks. The theatre upstairs is a treat for anyone, think you have to book though. It's always bustling with locals and commuters as it's close to New Street and Snowhill. It's worth stopping by for a jar or two!!
A. P.
Absolutely love this place. What a beautiful building! There's a theatre upstairs. The food and indeed the beer is far from cheap, but I just love the whole experience. Hope selling Fuller's to the Japanese doesn't result in any obvious changes.(Please no karioke!)
n. e.
Real 'old court room/deep velvet/oak paneling' kinda place
A. F.
Absolutely stunning interior. Always a good atmosphere but can get get very busy.
Good choice of ales but a little pricey. However the rear exit takes you straight to The Wellington which in my humble opinion is the best specialist Real Ale pub on earth.
P. C.
Great food, fantastic venue
J. S.
Absolutely wonderful food and a beautiful building. It used to be an old banking building if I remember rightly, and it really is a stunning interior with high ceilings and impressive decor. Great selection of beers on tap, and friendly staff who gave good recommendations when choosing what to have for lunch.
A. P.
Good meeting place. Outside seating. Cool inside. Comfortable, good service
S. O.
Could not fault in anyway the service, care and attention we recieved. Both Adam and Julie made our experience a memorable one and one we will definitely repeat.
D. P. J. B.
Nice place, welcoming staff. The food is OK.
R. O.
Beautiful pub, amazing surroundings and fantastic selection of real ales
C. W.
Great place to visit, unfortunately the food menu is boring and over priced, hence not many people are eating in this historic and fabulous venue.
L. N.
Expensive but classy. Theatre upstairs and a small beer garden. Birmingham doesn't often do elegance but then I suppose it's the law district and they wouldn't tolerate meals served on cricket bats or "pop art". The plays are pretty eclectic and it has been established long enough to collect it's own ecosystem of luvvies which is like going into. Chinese restaurant and only hearing mandarin. A good sign. Door staff can be a bit overzealous on weekends but I imagine they get bored of checking bags only to have people turn around because of the crowds. There's always a space if you're canny though.
Otherwise basic pub food. It's starting to get a bit over engineered though. Avoid anything with non-fruit jam or 'jus'. Not that I know of anything bad there, but best not give them ideas. Or we'll all end up eating Gloucester old spot savoury foam.
p. s.
Very large single room pub that doesn't lose its atmosphere despite its size. Large range of beers wines and spirits all reasonably priced. Not had any food in the pub but what I've seen looks good.
S. T.
Great atmosphere and good range of drinks available
Q. D.
I went here a few weeks back for the first time... On my second visit, the bartender asked me if I wanted a peroni (what I'd ordered last time). Really nice personal touch and made me wanna go back. Place is full of character and is always on my pub crawl list now!
S. M.
Nice 'proper' feeling pub in the city centre. Ideal for an after work drink or some good pub grub. There is a small theatre too showcasing some great 'small' shows and local performance groups. Gets quite busy of an evening and the small beer garden is often full in the summer.
d. s.
My favourite pub in Birmingham, despite the fact I am from Coventry and live in Bangkok thes days. I always manage to visit this place when back in the UK. Nice selection not beers, nice staff and a nice place to have a drink.
K. L.
I've visited here on a number of occasions, for a quiet drink, for lunch / dinner and as a stop on a stag do bar crawl and have never had a complaint. Firstly, the setting is stunning and they've made a great job of converting the old bank building, so it's a lovely and slightly unusual setting in which to enjoy a pint. Secondly, the range of drinks it excellent. You don't find many Fuller's pubs as far North as the Midlands and you get the benefit of their fine range of ales and few more to boot. Finally, the food is really good too, having repositioned themselves to be pie specialists. They are very, very good and the only reason I've knocked a star of is because I feel they're a tad on the pricey side. It's definitely one of Birmingham's best pubs though.
J. M.
Really lovely afternoon for my freinds birthday the doormen were really nice and chatted to us when going in.
The pub was very busy and we were very hungry so we thought it would be a while before we got served.
We couldnt find a table as there was 7 of us.
My freind asked a member of staff if he could find us a table. He was extremely helpfull and sat us in the small dining area.
There was 2 large fresh jugs of iced water on the table aready.
He took a drinks order straight away and provided menue's.
Our food arrived really quickly and was absouluty fab, and resonably priced.
Great food, great, service, great, atmosphere
Thanks Paul for being a excellent waiter and a chatting to us a credit to the pub.
We definitely be visiting again !
J. R.
Attended for a training course, so had several drinks and a lunch while here. Staff were helpful, prompt and polite. Had a sandwich with chips on the side, which I feel was over priced (just over £10). So not the best value for money. It did taste nice though and portion size was ok. Overall very nice venue and staff, just a bit pricey for what you get.
C.
The interior is beautiful, good choice of drinks, not too expensive. The food is decent too. It can get very crowded though, particularly early evenings, no place to sit. They got a theatre venue too, with some good acts, reasonably priced.
R. O.
Very clean and staff friendly. Unfortunately after pre ordering our meals we still had errors. The children's burgers were very dry and were mostly not eaten. The mains took an exceptionally long time to arrive. The staff bringing food didn't take empty plates even when I stacked them at the end of the table. Drinks far to expensive as a Peroni shandy and an apple juice cost over £8! Insane!
K. J.
Great food, and superb performance of Chicago. I was a bit dubious of seeing this classic at such a small venue, but the cast used the space so well it felt like they were performing just for me. A brilliant performance by all, but hats off to Andy/Amos who delivered the needn't of the show. 10/10
S. T.
One of the best bars in Birmingham beautiful building
R. K.
Excellent venue with a warm and friendly welcome
L. W.
I'll start by saying this isn't a review for the pub but the theatre which is part of it. The theatre is a wonderful night out. Small but perfectly formed as they say! Quirky, intimate shows make for a fun night out. Friendly, helpful staff. If you're looking for something different I'd recommend this.
R. Y.
We arrived at 10.30pm to be told that they were closing. Really? "Well not until 11pm but they will be closing". The majority of the bar staff were ignoring customers to either chat or clean up. It looked like a nice place and the beer was good but why would you ever go back to somewhere that doesn't make you welcome?
J. K.
I don't go into Birmingham very often but this was a wonderful surprise. We went to see a play upstairs and ended up staying there until we caught the train home which was a two minute walk from Snow Hill station.
The Old Joint Stock is an old stock exchange I believe and the architecture is stunning. They do meals that seem to be good value. They have gardens to use when spring summer and autumn arrive and the staff are efficient and friendly. They have a good array of ales, and for once we found a pub that sells Guinness.
Either Google or visit I promise you will not be sorry! For a city pub I really was extremely comfortable here. Jump on a train, get off at Snow Hill and come and find some authentic culture.
P.
Beautiful establishment with a good selection of beers and ciders on tap. The place is popular so you may not always be able to grab a table, buts there's plenty of bar space. The upstairs theatre is also definitely worth checking out for a little dose of culture.
D. C.
An absolutely fantastic building inside. Lots of space but tables get taken very quickly so you may have to stand. Excellent range of beers but you will pay more than a wetherspoons so don't expect it to be cheap. Downside is it does tend to have a fishy smell when you first walk in hence 4and not 5stars. Definitely worth a visit, especially if visiting Brum just to look at the beautiful decor.
C. L.
I love the look and style of this pub. However we went on a Saturday evening, only at 5:30pm and it was packed. The bar is very busy and not enough staff to serve. We waited 15 mins before turning around and leaving without having a drink. People order food at the bar which delays drink service even more. Loads of great ales on offer and a vibrant atmosphere, just a shame the service is slow. Don't let this put you off going, just don't expect a quick drink before going on to somewhere else. Its is one of the best pubs in the area, I just don't enjoy fighting to get served.
G. C.
What a lovely old place! Affordable food, a decent beer list, friendly table service and a magnificent building. It also has an adjoining theatre which we didn't visit, but the programme of events looked intriguing and fairly priced. Highly recommended.
G. S.
Great experience with friendly staff and excellent table service. It's an amazing building, too!
S. G.
Lovely building. Plenty of choice as part of a chain but much better than a weatherspoons!
m.
Great character to the building and great selection of ales
J. A.
Love this place. Great location in the middle of Brum. Great for meeting, eating & drinking
R. P.
I had a voucher from Fullers Fine Ale Club so I paid my first visit on Tuesday 24th November with a friend. I tried the Red Fox ale - fantastic! And the Turkey and cranberry pie of the day with mash and veg was gorgeous. In such fantastic surroundings too. Many thanks to the team who served me on the day. I will definitely be back for more.
P. W.
We stopped here for a drink on a day out in Brum with mates.
Awesome interior, great selection of drinks & a really good vibe.
Place was busy and it was hard to get a seat at first but its clear why its so busy - Just a really good place to drink.
D. A. S.
Slow service.. but moderately busy. Fantastic hand pull selection.. but not as good as the pub next door (leave by smokers area!).
Amazing venue.. with a theatre and all the original glamour of the Victorian bank.
Worth a few pints and worth admiring the decor. Not very cheap..£4 a pint.
Food looked ok.. but usual pub stuff. Pies and burgers.
Would visit again.. if not to walk through to next door!
R. M.
Such a brilliant pub, real gem.
R. A.
Truly lovely pub. Beautiful decor. Food was fantastic. Family was really happy. Friendly an attentive staff.. Great place.
s. l.
A fantastic venue opposite Pigeon Park, great service
S. P.
Good selection of ales and lagers, does pub food. But busy tonight 2-12-17.
Varied crowd and it's been a great place to meet and have a few beers, chat and catch up with mates before going on in Birmingham town.
Can't go wrong.
D. S.
I give three stars as the pub is usually packed around five o'clock and there is never enough staff on to meet the demand and some bar staff do not move and look to see who is next to be served. They have a balcony which used to be for drinkers, but it has been turned into a restaurant and is always empty whilst the drinkers are rammed downstairs, doesn't make sense. Excellent beer when you do get served.
S. S.
A great venue for excellent service and a good range of beers well worth a visit.
L. F.
A unique venue providing excellent food and drink. A very busy pub but well staffed so quick service with a smile! And you can visit the theatre on the top floor if you go on the right date. Well worth a visit just to admire the building inside and out.
S. R.
Food was good but access is very poor for mobility issues. Lots of steps to door with no grab rails and reserved seating is allocated upstairs - no wheelchair access upstairs even once you get in. Lift access to the toilets but need to go down a set of steps and up again to the upstairs seating.
P. L.
This is one of those traditional pubs in the city centre. It tends to be busy every night of the week. The place is located in a historic building with a lot of original features - this adds to the experience. There is no loud music so it's a good place if you want to go out with friends to talk over drinks. They also serve good quality pub food, there's table service. The place is also locally known for its theatre productions some of which are very good! (Look for theatre + meal deals).
J. S.
Nice friendly place, not too busy, nice meal.. good atmosphere.
D. A.
There are certainly some positives about this pub - beers you don't often see elsewhere in these parts and a lovely old building - but service can be hit and miss and the food is not as good as it used to be. Probably better when you're not jostling for space with the after-work crowds.
K. B.
Excellent food and a great atmosphere
J. S.
Superb Fullers drinking and eating establishment. Stunning decor, great choice of ales and lagers and really nice food. Decent sized beer garden / smoking area for a city centre pub.
G. S.
Lovely building with plenty of atmosphere.
C. F.
Really nice atmosphere, great staff ,good food would definitely go again
M. G.
We visited early lunch time and it was really busy. We were served quickly, efficiently and politely. Our meals arrived faster than we had anticipated considering how busy it was. The food was excellent, well presented and hot.
T. R.
Been here a couple times, once to see a small show in their theatre rooms upstairs and another time just for drinks with friends.
The Old Joint Stock is a great place to take some friends for drinks and catch ups, it has a really friendly atmosphere and the bouncers make sure that people that are too drunk don't get in. Would recommend this to you if you want a quiet drink with friends.
They aren't big on cocktails but great for a pint or two!
B.
The Theatre is a delight, the programming consistent, thoughtful and interesting. There is brilliant comedy there, and the staff are kind, professional and efficient. We have just been to see "The Gin Chronicles at Christmas" and loved it. They're coming back next year: we'll be there!
E. H.
We enjoyed lunch on the balcony. We both had the most delicious venison stew followed by dessert. The service was excellent. It was only our second visit and we will most definitely make many more.
A. W.
This is one of my favourite pubs in Birmingham. Use to be an old bank, fantastic high ceilings, great atmosphere, good selection of drinks and nice pub food classics. Perfect for an afternoon pint.
T. M.
There's never any toilet paper in the toilets - rolls always empty (last 4 or 5 visits always the same). Sloppy.
Very expensive for drinks - usually £5 or more a pint, though they have some unusual 'craft' ones on tap.
Great venue however, loads of charm. Food is good as well
J. S.
Lovely Fuller's Ale and Pie House in a fantastic building. Food and drink excellent quality, plus they have their own Theatre! Very grand building (I believe it was the Birmingham Stock Exchange once) in the middle of the city, right opposite the cathedral.
D. B.
Joined some work colleagues for a Christmas drink in late December 2017, and as one would expect the venue was full to the brim. The mood was very festive and people were enjoying themselves. The central bar works really well with the layout of the venue and as such is accessible from all four sides
R. D.
I think I may have gone to Old Joint Stock on the wrong night, so this review is based on my experience and maybe not representative of the usual experience as many others have recommended it to me.
The building is an old converted theatre and has plenty of seating as well as looking fantastic. Unfortunately on the evening I was there most of the beers seemed to be off so whilst there were lots of taps offering craft beers there were only two or three that were actually working on the night. The beers are pretty expensive, £4 for a table beer is top end for what I would expect to pay.
It's situated in the middle of Birmingham close to the cathedral so is ideal for a post work drink if you are in the area but be prepared to pay high prices.
P. H.
This is a beautiful building, Old bank turned pub with a theatre upstairs. This is the pub I always take people to when they are visiting from out of town because it is such an impressive space with its island bar and high ceilings. Great beer and wine selection too.
A. G.
What a great bar to get a few beers in. The building is amazing and the feel and decor in there is something else.
They had the christmas decorations up and it felt great in there. It was really busy but worth it.
D. D.
Nice big pub that still manages a cozy atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and accomodating. I brought a large group with me for coffee and they were extremely helpful. Going back again tomorrow.
J. I.
Amazing old pub with a working theatre. A pretty decent pun garden. The food is as a good as it get for pubs apart from the pies they're just the best around. Amazing ale and gin selection. It can get a bit busy but it's worth waiting around a bit.
A.
Beautiful pub with tonnes of atmosphere and a theatre! Downsides are its lack of seating (because it’s so popular – and right in the hearth of the city centre) and it could probably do with a few more draught lagers to choose from.
That said… I’ll no doubt go back again and again.
K. F.
Last Tuesday (8th Oct), my friend Baz texted me to suggest trying this establishment. I'd heard of The Old Joint Stock but never explored where it might be, as it has a theatre as well.
I was pleasantly surprised by how interesting it looked inside. Spacious & Historical !
We found the staff very helpful & told us of the history of the building & the theatre. The food & drinks were a little more priced than we usually pay but it was worth it. Plus it had a good vibe. Pretty packed for a Tuesday night.
Looking forward to going there again with my partner & possibly take in a show.
K. B.
Seems to be primarily a business man's pub. I went in with some friends after discovering it on Google Maps. The interior is as impressive in person. It's worth poping in just to experience the Victorian style opulence.
I only stopped in for a drink, but it seems like a good place for food. The restaurant area is on an upper gallery type raised platform (like an upper gallery in a theatre), away from the busier drinking area downstairs. There's also a small theatre somewhere in the building, not entirely sure where that could have been.
T. N.
Depending on when you go depends on how your experience will be. If you go on a Saturday night, it feels a little like a Wetherspoons. Nothing wrong with that, just not my bag. If you go for a few drinks on a weekday evening or a daytime drink at the weekend it's much nicer. Nice character inside and plenty of drink choices to be had.
C. H.
Lovely old pub with beutiful ornate decorations. It's clean and homely. They serve food, which we didn't have, and I enjoyed a cider. Will be returning
C. M.
Great place to unwind with a beer after work. Friendly staff and helpful - they bring you alcohol, very helpful. I recommend Veltins, beautiful stuff.
Not tried the food yet, will update the review when I have a long enough lunch break
K. R.
The building was a Victorian bank in a orchid life and the main bar is expensive and impressive. This is a Fullers pub and has huge selection of Fullers ales. There's also a great food menu of well done pub food, especially the pies. There's a theatre upstairs hosting a variety of live performances.
If there's one negative, the bar is so large that it can easily feel a little empty on quieter weekdays
T. W.
What a place it is wonderfull beautifull building and the decor is amazing. It has a great ambience and really friendly staff. The food is lovely must try the tikka masalla pie 👌 great. Lovely ales and lagers and a gin menu to die for if you go out for a night or day in Birmingham you must come here, oh yeah a small but cosy quaint theatre upstairs
J. R.
Great atmosphere, service was excellent and really friendly. Food was good too
M. R.
I've always like this place, especially the range of Fullers beers and the decor (old Bank). However, on number of recent visits the speed of service at the bar has been awful. I suggest they need more bar staff or only go at quiet times.
L. S.
Beautiful themed pub, great atmosphere for a drink after work. Prices weren't to bad for the central location either. Will definitely go back.
P.
Really nice drinks: beer, wine and cocktails, as well as traditional food in an amazing spot. Just in front of the cathedral, in city center. Deco is incredible! There’s a small terrace indoor for people to smoke which is excelente! One of the mosts special bar I’ve been! You must go!
Built in 1862 by Julius Alfred Chatwin (who also contributed in the construction of the cathedral), the establishment was originally designed as a library before becoming the Birmingham Joint Stock Bank. Lloyds Banks then took ownership of the premises in 1889.
More than a century later, and The Old Joint Stock is a stunning pub, one of the best in Birmingham and beyond, it is the UK's highest seller of London Pride.
It is also home to the Old Joint Stock Theatre, a professional 100 seat studio theatre, with full programme. The theatre includes full dressing and green room facilities, a box office and a theatre "Gin" bar for interval drinks, as well as a demountable stage and seating that allows each production or hire to inhabit the space to its best potential.
P. B.
Lovely architecture, decor and vibe.
p. a.
Great choice but it's all just a little bit too salty. If there is salt on the table then let us salt our own chips
C. W.
Great beer selection on, roomy beer garden with plenty of seating and shelter. Food is excellent and served quickly. There is also a small theatre in the back of the pub that I am planning to visit soon.
M. S.
Very vintage feel, great selection of draft ales
P. R.
Wonderful old bank building retaining originally features. Fuller's quality beers plus guests. Wine list very good. Excellent
M. M.
Brilliantly stocked bar...lovely architecture and seating areas providing sociable but private areas for meetings and get togethers. The clientele are generally working professionals. The toilets are clean. There is a small outside smoking and seating area.
Y. E.
Nice pint. Lovely wine. Pies look nice but we'd already booked a meal elsewhere. We'll try it next time.

Food and service were great waiting staff paying attention to all customers, my food was very nice, hot fresh and tasty, because it was Thursday live music singing love songs, and the menu is a set £25 for 3 courses I chose, asparagus with poached egg and hollandaise, warm chicken salad was very nice, Apple pie with custard. Busy pub downstairs.
P. W.
Beautiful place, nice big bar and always a really friendly atmosphere. Very little theatre space up stairs but well worth a trip to if you are in the local area
R.
A popular choice on our day drinking pub crawls when we want a pub / bar with character.
The building is a amazing and capitaving work of art in its self, they play easy live jazz in a Sunday and the pie and mash is worth a try is your feeling in the mood for comfort food.
A round can be quite pricey but it's always nice for a pop in, sit by the window and watch the patrons of pigeon park.
Pint of cider on tap £5
Bottle of prosecco £27

A popular pub which used to be a bank. Set in Temple Row in Birmingham city centre. High ceilings with feature Dome . Christmas very special as always has an amazing christmas tree which reaches to the ceiling. This is a Fullers pub. Food excellent but expensive and drinks are London prices. Can get very busy especially early evening when all the offices close and people pour in for drinks. Has small outside area which catches the sun in summer. Staff very nice but can take a long time to get served.Usually has live music on a sunday lunch time. Has a small upstairs theatre with some productions but not well advertised. This is a popular city venue and well worth a visit. Clean decor with some nice features. Can get very crowded .

Some of the covid restrictions had been lifted but still not accepting cash payments so only 3 stars else would have been 5 sorry!
N. P.
A fantastic looking venue, and I think I fell in love with one of the bar staff!! Thanks!
S. C.
Amazing traditional old English city pub complete with it's own studio theatre. Great food beers and service. Definitely not to be missed if you're in Birmingham.
A. P.
Massive character-ful historic pub. Vast bar. I'm never desparate to go to this pub as often a long wait at the bar and hard to find a seat (bar takes up most of the building) but once you've got your beer and a place to perch it's a grand place.
D. B.
I visited the pub with friends on a day out. What can I say? The interior is quite simply stunning, with beautiful polished oak panelling everywhere, marble busts of famous classical figures arrayed all around the top of the main room & delightful Victorian acid-etched glass in the ornate doors & windows. I understand it was the showpiece very first Trustee Savings Bank, so all this grandeur is certainly fitting. It subsequently became known as the 'Joint Stock' as shares were traded from the place after TSB left. The menu is expansive, but of note is that they specialise in serving artisan pies with chips or mash, & veg with gravy or 'pie liquor', which I tried out of curiosity. It was delicious, & the Fuller's beers were all in excellent condition too. It's a bit on the pricey side, but it is Birmingham city centre so to be expected. It can get very busy at lunchtimes, with office workers having meals during their lunchbreaks, so if you're a large party like we were I'd strongly advise booking in advance so you can all sit together. Overall, a fabulous historic bank-pub conversion you'd kick yourself for not visiting if you're in the city.

Old fashioned pub, grand design...but flies kept flying around my food. Bit boring too, a pub for old men.
S. O.
A large and busy city centre pub with great selection of beers. Has a slightly Western feel to the place. Interesting pub food like local pies. Can get quite busy at peak times.
N. T.
Great decor, good environment, reasonably quiet on the night we were there. Food is excellent and arrived pretty quickly, making it a good place for dinner before going on to a theatre or other event for the night.
s. g.
Great building with large selection of draught and bottled beers. Good pies
L. B.
Fantastic food. Loved the mini pies and how you can select your own meal made up of different smaller dishes. Very busy but great atmosphere.
C. L.
What an amazing place full of character, charm, and friendly atmosphere, enjoy worth 5 stars!!!
G. C.
No more to say, this bar is the best in Brum. If u didn't know it there's a small theatre upstairs. Had a decent bite to eat, few Guinness best in Brum, and watched a show by a group of American actors. For me with so much choice now on Colmore Row and surrounding area, that and the Sun on the Hill, Old Joint Stock is my No:1
S. D.
Fantastic place to visit all year round
K. B.
It's Fullers, almost 'nuff, said but the interior is good, being a repurposed victorian bank which isn't/wasn't overly bombastic. The beer is fine if you like Fuller Smith & Turner's beers. Can't speak of the food but upstairs is a really good small theatre with a continuous flow of innovative productions. So a good day or night be here. Only loses a star for the patron smokers loitering outside.
N. G.
Nice place with unique features. You could tell it was a Fullers pub because it was almost London beer prices though. But worth a visit if your passing nearby.

I'll introduce the place by saying that I recommend it for afternoon tea, dinner and simple drinking. The location is very central, not so far from the Parish Church near the main shopping mall; really easy to get to and very enjoyable too after strolling through the beautiful streets dimmed with orange tint lighting.
Once you get to The Old Joint Stock, you'll realize you're there thanks to the beautiful entrance, tall columns separated by gigantic glass windows that allow much natural light on the inside. Once you get in, most of the people will be dressed in formal smart clothing, suits, elegant; don't be discouraged, I was with my shopping bags, my camera equipment in a bag pack, a hoody very much casual, nobody cared about my fitting.
The room is super large, sort of a squared shape, very tall and mighty room, at least 7 meters tall surrounded by tall columns as if you felt in a semi opened temple. A big glassed dome above the center of the room allows plenty of natural light to get in and gives it a fantastic touch of originality. There is a balcony inside the main room, tables here too and beautiful view over the room below.
The ceiling meets the four walls, having beautiful statues over viewing the room: I'm not very sure about it but, it seems to me to have recognized heads of the David by Michelangelo Buonarroti and Julius Caesar. There are plenty more personalities if you have time to identify them, I was a bit excited so I didn't give my self enough time.
At the very center of the room there is a bar, sort of an enclosed tall Island. A wide selection of Ales (not fizzy, not carbonated) and lagers (carbonated, bitter was mine). Wide selection of wines if I correctly recall and hard liquors. Everything is attractively displayed on this tall sort of piece of massive furniture made out of solid wood surmounted by dimmed lights and a beautiful clock.
The place is cozy, incredibly rich decoration and practically almost everything is built out of wood.
Food was at a decent price, this place has a history in making pies so I took one too, a slowly baked lamb stew with red pepper and basil, aside the pie I had green cabbage and broccoli and chips. It was really good, we all enjoyed our pies at the table. The beer was really good too, in order to grab the one you like, they allow you to taste without giving you fuss. I paid 17 pounds, 20 euros I guess. I find it super cheap for the crazy experience you get out of it.
On the backside there's a small garden with an entrance access for reduced mobility individuals.
The place also has its own little theater, they have a calendar of events for the winter season and you can check it out in order to attend one of their shows and book ahead of time.
Overall, this place is fantastic. I would come here on a rainy day as much as I would on a sunny day. If you are with friends and in company or alone with a book, doesn't matter you'll always get a great great experience.
G. R.
We went to a relaxed performance where people on the spectrum and with disabilities were warmly welcomed and taken care of. It was wonderful to see. The theatre is also lovely as were the staff
R. C.
Great. Smart place and very pleasent staff
A. W.
The bar is centre stage but look up or miss out; this pub has one of the best ceilings in Birmingham. Decent beers, good food, lots of seating (but lots of punters). Nice place, handy for Colmore Row and the Cathedral.
S. w.
Staff were very helpful but the only downside is that they don't do cocktails but that's just my opinion. Fantastic place building is great. prices were reasonable. Would definitely recommend this place and I would definitely come here again
M. T.
Bar none, one of the highlights of my trip to the Brum.
This pub has a comfortable, somehow familiar vibe to it.
The Englishman in me feels that my ancestors would have imbibed their beers in a pub not too fargone from this one.
The decor is Olde Victorian and the beer selection plentiful.
Do yourself a favour, bar hop to other places in Birmingham but come here to Roost. Treat yourself to the the Pie Trio, it comes with a flight of beer and is more than worth the 16 pounds it costs
D. C.
Wonderful place, tasty food, good portion sizes. Brill. Only complaint is you pay before you eat and they ask for tip but how can you give a tip if you haven't had the full experience yet. Apart from that...excellent 😊
b. w.
Always a great pub.
R. S.
Best pie and pint in Birmingham. Well worth a visit just to see the interior, especially at Christmas when they have a huge Christmas tree.
The pies on the menu are freshly made each day with fresh ingredients.
Get there early to be sure of a seat.
S. S.
Drinks prices I think are on the high side.
Apart from that; great drinks selection and good food. I had a birthday meal here a year or so ago and the staff were excellent - really friendly.
The building it's self is a nice place to be.
K. M.
Delicious food & a great selection of beers
N. R.
I went for dinner and drinks. Excellent service and very friendly staff, good prices and excellent food. The interior is very nicely decorated, it looks like you walk to a museum. A must-to-visit place in Birmingham for sure.
T. H. J.
Great building, huge ceiling. Can get a bit stuffy when it's busy, not as much seating as I would like. Tiny beer garden out back too for the summer time, though you're unlikely to get any real sun out there, as it's surrounded by buildings.
A. W.
Beautiful surroundings, great selection of drinks and despite being quite busy the bar staff and the service that they gave was excellent, looking forwars to a return visit.
J. C.
Great atmosphere, ordered food and it arrived within a few minutes of me getting back to my table. Even though it was extremely busy the bar staff worked their way through the queue with rapid ease.
G. W.
Good pub but went on a Saturday evening. It was very busy; could not get a seat. Big selection of beers and lagers.
T. S.
This place absolutely deserves a recommendation. Also there is very good service there. I was particularly impressed by barmaid Karolina - a charismatic energetic, positive and outgoing personality. Vell done Karolina . I'll be back there.
R. S.
Their Fish and Chips were fantastic.....must have made a huge hole in the North Atlantic. As good as if not better than the "Nags Head" in Abingdon...and believe me they take some beating. Some great beers on tap. Highly recommended.
S. C.
Can't believe I'd never been here before. Amazing place with theatre at top where we saw a brilliant show. Will definitely be back there soon. Staff were also helpful and friendly. Can't fault it.
S. R.
This is a beautiful pub. The beer and food are both excellent. One of my favourite pubs. Beware though it is very popular so can be pretty busy.
N. P.
Great pub, nice pint of neck oil!
S. S.
Very popular busy thriving pub restaurant, lots of classy elegant and smart people visit here often, I indulged in a burger and it was impressive and tasty, both the drinks and food menu was pleasing. I enjoyed my visit - thank you
A. M.
Lovely Victorian surroundings inside this pub. Good selection of beers. One surly staff member who didn't look like they could be arsed, but others seemed ok.
F. S.
A fantastic pub, beer and food. Staff were friendly and Jackie made our visit memorable when serving the food and drinks at our table. Our party of 14 really enjoyed the lunchtime visit.
m. b.
Had a great visit, Covid secure. Order at the table and all drinks brought to you.
M. K.
Very good beer selection in a distinctive building. Suspicious about how they won an award as the best in Birmingham from an obscure publication, and it's funny how they lock the back gates to stop customers escaping to the real ale pub behind them.
M. M.
Good pub in the centre of the city. Good food
A. S.
This place is absolutely worth a visit if you're in Birmingham. The food is amazing and there is something for everyone. The choice of ales is awesome and the staff are friendly and very efficient..... essential as it can get very busy
C. A.
Beautiful place to have drink.
C. H.
Good range of drinks, quick service and the building is worth the visit alone. Wonderful Victorian splendour. Just take you're cheque book for drinks!!😂
K. J.
One of my favourite pubs in Birmingham. Great location, interesting architecture always a good atmosphere. Wide selection of Fuller's beers and reasonably priced food.
M. G.
Pleasant atmospheric pub, although a little busy even at 3.30 in the afternoon. Needs more staff serving. A little pricey on drinks with a pint of cider costing £5.10
I. K.
Went quite early in the afternoon and although minimal customers at that time it was evident that one member of bar staff was not enough. Very flustered and had to wait over fifteen mins for hot drinks to arrive after paying for them
i. t.
Beautiful building an old stock exchange so I believe, the architecture is outstanding, the food is very good sunday roasts and pub classics it is a very popular venue so I would advise you make a booking, it also has a small theatre which one of the people in our group has frequented and said the show was very good, so I would definitely give this establishment the thumbs up.
D. H.
Wonderful place. Staff are very friendly and always happy to help. The theatre is a fantastic venue and the owners are hard working and enthusiastic. My only issue is the bar is a little bit pricey.
n.
Had a great time, me and my partner were very impressed with your Gin knowledge and all the fun facts that came with it, i came away with more great Gins to try out and also a greater understanding of the history of Gin, including how its made, what certain wordings means, like London dry and Navy strength etc, and we also got to learn more about Gins best friend the tonic water. we will definitely be coming back next year to experience your new format, happy new year!
K. B.
Great historic former Lloyd's Bank building now turned into a fantastic bar with a small theatre upstairs where there are many cabaret and burlesque and other small scale theatrical experiences....Fuller's own and run this pub in Birmingham voted "Pub of the Year"this year .. great beers ciders and red and white wines not forgetting its speciality Gins.....a great place for a night out and when we went last night Tristram was a great barman and host ...most attentive and informative.. Great Brummie pub!!!!
m. h.
Excellent pub in the centre of Brum with good food. The pies are a speciality. Can be a bit busy and is not the cheapest. Wide range of age groups.
M. B.
Definitely one of my favourite places to meet friends for a few drinks. This building is a beautiful piece of art! And it's something to be admired.
S. W.
A perfect pint of ale to accompany our delicious steak pies & the polite & attentive staff made our lunch a pleasure. Thoroughly recommended.
P. B.
I think we came on a bad day! Whole of the inside smelt of urine. Tables were left dirty and toilets not very clean. Stayed for one drink only. Interior very nice when you look up.
S. E.
Lovely ambience
Even better food
Great building
T. L.
Great venue, fullers pub so their standard beers and food. Prices have gone up recently and can get very busy after work. Bar service isn't the quickest
W. R.
Very nice pub. Good beer but very expensive. Also barman tried to short change me. Beware he was good at it but he had to give in.
P. R.
Excellent charcterful pub with good ale choice and fantastic pies. Try to get a table on the dining balcony to get way from the crowds and enjoy the great view over the hoards by the bar.
V. S.
Great selection of drinks. The bar area is like an auditorium with a decorative feature in the domed celling. There is a small terrace type seating area up a flight of stairs.
S. M.
A good solid drinking establishment
J. R.
We watched Miracle on 34th Street in the theatre. Wow!! Utterly brilliant, I was moved to tears. Music and acting first rate. The venue is lovely. Very highly recommended.
g. c.
lovely relaxed atmosphere, ordered some food but even though they had finished serving they still agreed to prepare it which was brilliant and very accommodating.
K. M.
Excellent very ornate large city centre pub with excellent choice of beers and good food and service. A bit pricey however
D. D.
Good selection of beers , the specialty pies are great , good wine deals . A beautiful building , has it's own theatre upstairs , showing everything from Shakespeare to panto .
M. P.
Staff were really helpful and let me try a few beers before deciding and offered their opinions. It is a nice place but toilets could do with a refurb. Prices were good for centre of town
K. C.
Great place to drink, lovely staff and fast service as well as a truly beautiful setting to spend an evening. Love the decor.
I. D.
Lovely old building. Limited menu but good food and service. One of the menu choices a steak with a glass of wine. Never seen that before but thoroughly enjoyed it!
A. R.
The main pub area is in a big hall. Its old style theatre building but has its own charm. The pub has good choice of drinks.
P. B.
My five stars are for the show in the theatre today
Bonnie and Clyde musical, great cast and super voices in all a most enjoyable show.
Shame about the extortionate drink prices though 2 medium wine spritzers £14.30 !!! . The 16 cost of tickets was much better value.
M. n. D. C.
Beautiful pub. Drink selection is excellent and the food outstanding (the pies are superb!). Obvious dedication from staff to make this a place to come back to again and again.
H. A.
Wide selection of ales and beers, all of which I tasted excellent.
Had dinner as well and was impressed with the selection. Pies were good and reasonably priced!
Good looking building too
K. J.
Amazing ceilings - thank god for the smoking ban! Top beer too
K. S.
Lovely decor..small mushroom pastry pie as a main with only 4 mushroom slices in it. (£14.95) Theatre show 'Tina Turner tea lady' was medioca. Didn't go out to play 5 games of bingo
J. C.
Amazing pies, and a huge range of ales, in this former theatre. Building is gorgeous - huge tall ceilings, and a huge centrepiece bar, accessible from all sides. Handily located near Snow Hill station too.
M. S.
Fantastic building - a proper city centre pub in an old bank.
Very attentive and friendly staff, great beers and food. Recommend the pies.
s. b.
Lovely atmosphere n staff. Interior better appreciated on a week day, weekend gets extremely busy. Try going out back to quaint courtyard, go down steps enter for directly opposite to The Wellington!
T.
Went here a couple of times a few years ago. Would defo recommend for the excellent service and the sticky toffee pudding (which is to die for!)
T. M.
£15 for fish and chips but it was particularly good.
D. B.
Blow you away interior really lovely. The food is top end pub food. It even has a theatre leading directly off the pub with brill productions. What more could you want for an evening (day) out?
V. B.
Awesome decor. This place has lots of history. Good choice of drinks and the food looked good though I didn't have any. Can't go wrong with this place.
U. A.
One of the best pubs in Birmingham.
T. P.
Great place to meet after work. Must try out the theatre. You can spend ages just having a great drink whilst looking at the building. It's fascinating.
R. L.
Amazing building- almost too good for a pub! On our visit the barman greeted us as we walked in a gave perfect service with a smile and some local stories.... are the underground tunnels really haunted?
M. M.
Beautiful bar but the hygiene has gone downhill. The smell wasn't please when you walked in. Display of drinks all covered in dust. Shame really
R. R.
Yes its an impressive building. But the atmosphere is dull, the drinks are overpriced, there is no entertainment, the menu is not the best, and the staff seemed uninterested. Went with a group from work and we weren't that impressed. You'll get much better value if you go half a mile out of the city centre.
S. T.
A good place to meet friends and have a beer
M. T.
Great atmosphere and decor. Shame that because it's soooo busy in there it feels like forever to get served. The staff are running around yet still manage to be polite and the drinks aren't too bad priced.
D. F.
Lovely pub/theatre venue. Gorgeous interior, tastefully done. Great ales and good food. Staff very attentive and helpful too. Highly recommended.
B. S.
Lovely pub striking architecture.
Very busy last night very hot.
Do you know what bank it was?
Visited the theatre as well
Brilliant loved it
Would recommend pub an theatre
P. S.
Nice pub in a central location. Lost my wallet in here after a good night out. Spoke to the manager next day and they had found it with cash & cards all present. Faith in humanity restored
A.
It's Ok. Had the fish and chips. My opinion: cod for the fish and chips is much more delicious than haddock... Other than that the pub is great!
B. S.
Great pint and atmosphere
D. M.
Good pints, good food. A lot of staff on which was great and just overall a good experience id say. Prices aren't over the top as well.
J. B.
Good pub, great beer, when in New Street area you will not be disappointed visiting this place, once inside this amazing building, it's a wow factor.
B. H.
Great atmosphere and beer selection
M. M.
Great place, nice beer garden outside. Quite often packed so make sure your in early to secure a good spot 😂☺️
C. H.
Every time I come to Brum shopping I pop in here for a pint to set me up for an exhausting day of walking round the shops. Check out the amazing decor, sculptures and ceiling. Despite the pricey cost of eating/dining it's a real gem of a find.
