Reviews of The Red Lion
J. C.
I can see why it's popular, however the wife and I thought the same about what would have made it more enjoyable.
We sat upstairs in what would be a very pleasant and warm setting but the room was dominated by rather large flat screen. Not a problem if West Ham v Leicester is of interest to you. I have no idea what they put on at other times.
The service is friendly and efficient but I believe they were a "man down" which made it difficult for them.
Our Sunday lunch meal was good, apart from the beef which was a bit rubbery and the frozen roast potatoes which were hard, dry and over seasoned. I strongly suggest these need to be replaced.
Generous portions and a nice mix of vegetables hidden under the meat and Yorkshire made up for any short comings.
K. K. C.
Award winning Sunday Roast. Decent price very generous portion. Very friendly staff. Spoiled by beer choices. Cozy and lovely place. Reservation required as it gets busy.
A. D.
3rd visit, and still very good, I had the crispy pork belly dinner again, and my husband had the lamb and beef dinner. Roll on the fourth visit 🙂
G. J.
Visited for Sunday Lunch today and was blown away by both the quality of the food and the fantastic service received from the team there.
I had a dietary requirement which they were very attentive of, checking the ingredients were OK for me.
Everyone who served us were friendly and made us feel so welcome. The whole experience was up there with the best dining and service experiences I've had.
Big thank you to the team there. Visit 27th March 2022.
R. M.
love love love this place!! Went on Sunday, last minute booking and despite being understaffed they still accommodated us. Food was amazing and staff friendly and helpful despite being under pressure. Just booked again for this Sunday :)
G. D.
Delicious Sunday roast and not a stingy serving either, great value for money. Really nice friendly staff too. Recommend.
L. H.
Rating this on the meal that we had... We had the Sunday roast which was top notch, exactly how a good roast should be. A small intimate place, clean and has the traditional pub feel. Sharpen up on service a little and definitely a five star from me!
J. C.
Excellent food and staff. Very quick delivery of our food which was superb. Beef, pork and lamb for three of us. We will definitely return here.
k. b.
The staff really friendly. The food was generously portioned. My lamb was nice in taste but a bit dry on outside, but ok inside. Potatoes were hard on outside, bit chewy not crunchy and fluffy. Gravy was decent. Would eat again if hungry but not downstairs. There is an awful smell of staleness and mildew especially in one bar area that is enough to kill any appetite. Shame because staff are very friendly and helpful and deserve a better environment to work in.
G. J.
Wonderful pub with a great menu for lunch and a great place for me to take my daughter for lunch. A child friendly place that also play great music and employ superb staff.
P. L.
Quality little boozer, friendly staff and fantastic beer garden. Decent selection of drinks, good for watching the footy too. Didn't eat here but food looked amazing too, shout out to Jack behind the bar for his excellent service and friendly style, all other bar staff were excellent too just never got their name. Top 3 pub I've been to while working away.
M. O.
Definitely the best roast dinner in Birmingham, down to great chefs. Also
Fantastic bar staff, especially Hannah and Chloe. All together great experience every time we go. Highly recommend
J. W.
Great COVID arrangements, plenty of tables in the courtyard all spaced out. All table service, ordering off a QR code that works really well. Always been a fan of the Red Lion and the way they’re handling the current requirements, they’ll continue to be.
O. C.
We stayed in Birmingham for only one night and our host recommend this local pub. We were so glad we came to the Red Lion. The food is so nice, very tasty and lovely staff. Also the price is very reasonable. Love it.
a. h.
I love this pub! It's a small, Victorian pub with a traditional bar and lounge plus a lovely garden and sun terrace.
This pub attracts an eclectic crowd - locals, sports fans, tourists and there is a great atmosphere.
Food is fantastic but - be warned! - the portions are huge! Sunday roasts are amazing!
It can take some time to get served at the bar, but they will set up a tab.
A wonderful local and a "not-to-be-missed" JQ original. I recommend booking for Sunday lunch!
C. B.
Jus had the ost amazing meals at The Red Lion
Slow cooked Pork with crispy rind and melt in the mouth meat.
The tasty Champ potatoes, perfectly cooked red cabbage and the irresistible gravy were a delight.
The Red Lion is a highly recommended hidden gem in the jewellery Quarter.
U. N.
Hannah Montana and Wayne's World hard to beat in Birmingham. Whether it is a pint after work, an evening meal or Sunday Roast, outstanding service, food, atmosphere and garden. Hard to beat The Red Lion, owner a great guy also.
C. M.
Always welcoming, great food and drinks selection. Lunch time menu was delicious and affordable, relaxing vibe with friendly and approachable staff.
E. D.
Great Food. Amazing Food. Incredible music and very cool vibe. Perfect for relaxing after work and for a Friday night as well. Incredible garden with heating lamps and a TV. 5/5 I will come here again definitely.

Great pub food upstairs at the Birthday/Christmas party
A. P.
Great food, good drinks and open fire 🔥
M. C.
Quiet little place but lovely meals

Had best Sunday roast I've had in ages. All fresh and succulent! Will be back.
S. H.
Food is really good here. Not gourmet or anything just really nice. Beer is good as well. Surprisingly good in fact.
M. F.
Nice staff and good beer!

J. D.
Great place for a party or a quick pub meal. The service was very nice.
P. W.
Good beer great staff very enjoyable evening
S. W.
Had best Sunday roast I've had in ages. All fresh and succulent! Will be back.
S. W.
Had the breakfast, it was delicious. I've been told that the Sunday roast dinner is amazing and I think from the amount of people I saw in there ordering it, it kind of speaks for itself. I will try it the next time I'm in. Its a small cosy pub (upstairs has plenty of seating) and staff are friendly.
W. H.
Friendly staff, cute little place. Deffo coming back
V. P.
Very tasty Sunday Roast both meat and veg. Great service.
B. S.
Good Sunday roast. Popped in for the 'legendary' Sunday roast. Pretty good value, friendly staff, quick service and brilliant selection of veg, but didn't quite live up to the hype.
Worth noting that, in the unlikely event that you have room, the dessert selection is pretty poor. A good traditional dessert or two would be an excellent addition to the menu.
M. F.
Nice staff and good beer!
A. Y.
Nice friendly staff. Nice portions. Had lamb for Sunday lunch which was slightly dry. Overall, well worth a visit although with only an hour slot we couldn't try the dessert.
K. G.
Very tasty breakfast in the morning! (And good beer in the evening, especially some IPA’s)
d. m.
Friendly and good real ale selection
G. C.
We had a delicious vegetarian Sunday roast here. The portions were very generous and there was a really good selection of vegetables on the plate.
The dining room upstairs is nicely done out but the rooms downstairs have a more pub feel about them.
t. l.
The size of the burger.... if you are like finishing 10 days hunger strike or just been fasting for 18 days and want to bring some leftovers for your family... go there... you wont be disappointed. Good selection of booze and over all good place to overstay your lunch break. Solid 5/7.
D. A.
Decent, fresh pub food at a reasonable price. Good vegetarian options and a wide range of both non-alcoholic drinks an interesting beers.
Lots of little rooms to sit in and a fairly large garden (unfortunately, smoking is allowed in the garden).
s.
Went for Sunday roast here. I had the slow roast pork belly, my girlfriend had the beef. Both were absolutely delicious.
The place has a nice, warm and quiet pub atmosphere. Just make sure to come early to get a table or make a reservation because the place is popular - for good reasons.
A. J.
Probably the best sunday lunch in Birmingham!
L. M.
Delicious Sunday roast, the lamb melted in my mouth! Friendly staff and great service
m. c.
Good range of beers. Disappointing not to be providing food.
J. D.
Brilliant pub. Awesome food and drink. Knowledgeable, friendly staff and a digital jukebox. Nice outdoor area partially covered for smokers. The room upstairs is deceptively big and a great option for parties and gatherings.
R. N.
Best Sunday roast ever. Not only that but all the food is just amazing. The people that work there have great customer service skills. My favourite place to go and have a quit and nice meal.
D. I.
Great little pub didn't eat , but food looked and smells fantastic ideal place to watch football without the rowdy crowd you get in some places. The beer garden is a hidden gem ,a must if you do visit. Will definitely return
T. R.
This pub has improved alot since it changed management. Friendly staff, nice food and good choice of beer. Several rooms to sit in throughout the pub if you want a more intimate setting and the outside seating area is beautiful. Would highly recommend.
R. B.
The red lion is our favourite pub. Love the hand cut chips. Their specials board is always worry a try, never had a bad meal there, value for money. The staff and service is excellent.
S. H.
Cracking roast and good beers. Always a good, chilled visit. Glad it is one of my locals
C. G.
The best Sunday lunch in birmingham. Staff are rest friendly and the food is superb. Great value for money. Couldn't recommend highly enough!
M. I.
I had this place rated as 5 stars but had to change it after they removed the best bar food item birmingham from the menu. (The Yorkshire puddings and beef for £6.95). Still decent food and potions but just not the same.
A. Y.
An ok pub and tasty grub.
g. s.
Could not fault the pub. Food excellent value, staff were personal, friendly, helpful and worked as a team. Nothing was too much trouble for our French server Celia. Will be back soon!
M. R.
Recent takeover which negatively effected the sister pub seems not to have had a bad effect here. Menu is good and service is friendly. Could do without reheating the mash though
S. C.
Had a jacket potatoe and it was presented really well and tasted lovely. Very friendly pub. Will definitely visit again if I'm in the area.
R. W.
This was probably, hang on, definitely the best Sunday lunch I have ever experienced. Plenty of meat, multiple vegetables two types of potatoes and flavoursome gravy, vegetarian options available, and very, very professional service. R.Williams. South Wales
S. C.
Lovely old original features in the pub. Amazingly friendly staff ie Abby and Trish.
S. S.
A really nice pub with the best Sunday roast I have had in years. But you will need elasticated waistbands in your clothes. I would not skip breakfast but you should have a light breakfast!
J. C.
Fabulous home cooked food in this old traditional pub. Great atmosphere, friendly staff. We had a very good night here. Highly recommended.
M. B.
The barber recommended this pub after cutting my son's hair. Cosy room at the back with an open fire was gorgeous. We had dinner there which was pork belly with crackling, very nice.
K. B.
Great backyard and atmosphere, and good service - not my favorite selection of beers on draft but that's probably seasonal, and regardless, I'd come back for drinks and snacks!
P. T.
The Sunday lunch is the best in Brum and children have to go to the upstairs dining so you can eat great food without it feeling like a creche with parents letting there kids run around while they get drunk. Great policy
s. j.
Excellent service very good food something suitable for every palette. Be prepared for generous portions and a large variety of drinks, little gem of a pub will be back soon.
B. V.
Lovely food, nice atmosphere.
G. C.
A great local pub for the Jewellery Quarter with excellent food.
Edit: now part of Laine's brewery group, so large selection of their beer on tap. No longer stocks Bathams, but food remains excellent.
A. A.
Great Sunday lunch
D. S.
Expensive. Lounge room to warm with the heating on when it's 22 degrees outside! A small garden area in the rain was mote comforting. I've been coming here for 7-10 years and the prices of food and drink always seem to be far higher than yiu would expect frim this almost remote location.
L. H.
Nice but my chunky chips were not cooked properly they did take back I requested fries after I was put of by un cooked chips they were good about it also they were missing a component of dish I was not told was disappointed but they just said sorry the cashier should have told you no discount offered... I would still go back tho...nice environment...
C. s.
Amazing food guys ...couldn't get any better ! The portions were massive especially for the kids, not a bad thing but I swear I've paid the same price for rubbish in food chains and for less. I could imagine your standard of food served on China plates in a restaurant, with a lot less on the plate and paying twice as much for it. Amazing guys......keep it up !!
a. B.
Lovely place to eat in the resturant upstairs main meal was amazing and good size portion. But compaired to the main meal dessert was disapointing. Only downside is not very disable friendly and no parking near by.
A. S.
The Red Lion, my trusty local. Sister venue to The Lord Clifden, part of the UAB (Urban Art Bar) group. This is a proper pub minus the sticking to the carpets, serving anaemic food and the best pint on offer being a Carling.
The Red Lion does it right, with local ales, international bottles and some great guest drafts. They serve fantastic food with interesting and tasty specials daily/weekly. Their portions are HUGE though the prices aren't cheap, however well worth it, at around £11 for a main.
There is outside space to sit, drink and eat. In the summer it's a great place to chill in the sun, though limited as a lot of it is covered, however it's perfect for when the good old British weather inevitably trikes....
In the winter, there is a real log fire and cosy inside to warm you up and escape the elements. Sport will play sometimes, so do be aware of that.
Give this Brummie independent a try!
D. D.
Great food firstly, awesome service and enough variety to wet your whistle. There is more than meets the eye at this great pub, so be an explorer and find a great seat in the garden.
K. K.
We had our Christmas party here last night. It was great fun and the hospitality of the their bar staff was tremendous. Thankyou for making it a good night Davina. X
N. M.
Really good food with generous portion and reasonable price. Good beer and cider selection too. Atmosphere is cosy and casual, staff are very friendly. Highly recommended
A. M.
Nice little Pub, good food, staff was nice, seamed a bit stressed with a full house, but everything was fine. They warned us food will take 40mis, it came after 15 mins, and taseted nice!
A. A.
little out of the way gem. The Food not only delicious but the portion size was huge for our lunch and a great selection of beers. Friendly helpful staff made all the difference.
O. K.
Big portions of amazing quality pub grub. Boss burgers, banging roasts, one of the best food pubs in Birmingham.
K. B.
It has slipped so much compared to as I remember it. At one time a cracking ale awaited but these days you get the impression that ale interest is no longer of interest to the pun with stramline choices without a price decrease.
p. b.
Had to change beers a couple of times, it'd gone off probably due to the hot weather. Bar assistant was fine with this.
The outdoor rear garden is quite impressive
M. P.
Had a great meal here off the festive menu....really good home cooked pub food, service was great too. Highly recommended
J. A.

S. B.
Good, old fashioned boxer with a front and back bar. Also a good outside seating area. Runs different events such as wine tasting nights and steak dinner events.
W. B.
The food was ok at best, good portion size but unfortunately had 2 bones in my chicken burger and the cod fritters were far too dense.
p. n.
