Lovely friendly welcoming pub. A group of 10 had a splendid few hours enjoying the fayre yesterday. Efficient service, delicious food and good selection of beers and wines. What's not to like well done Team 👍

Super welcoming barmaid made us visitors feel at ease straight away and invited us to sit in the shady beer garden where we took our lovely refreshing drinks to peruse the food menu, ordering food was quick and simple and when the food arrived it was hot and very tasty. Our visit was only spoilt by a stag party meeting up in the beer garden and becoming super rowdy. We soon ate up and left after that otherwise we would have ordered desserts and more drinks as our hotel was right next door.

Great pub that does lovely food, staying next door at the ibis styles hotel, so popped in for a beer. The menu looked good, so ordered the Gammon, chips and eggs, it was fantastic value and tasted delicious. Friendly staff and a nice atmosphere even during the week. Totally recommended.

Really love this pub. It has that old pub feeling that's slowly disappearing If you want to go somewhere for a quiet drink then this is the place.. An absolute gem of a place! Staying at the Ibis next door, ventured out for food and this did not disappoint! The batter on the fish was to die for, the homemade tartare sauce divine. The steak and ale pie was quality and filling. Good ale too

Old fashion English Pub located on Summer Row. The pub itself is very comfortable, airy with big arched windows and plenty of light. Food was really tasty. We ordered the soup of the day and the mixed ocean fish and chips followed by the sticky toffee pudding. Quick and friendly service although I have to say we were the only people having lunch. Their menu is extensive and I will definitely go back to try some more. Highly recommended.

Update(Reply to The Shakespeare, Summer Row): The only disappointing aspect of the visit was that the Sunday menu have been removed. If it's restored, I'll happily give a 5 star. This is, of course, the decision of the staff and management and I'll completely understand if it's not possible due to operational reasons. I will, nonetheless, continue to patronise The Shakespeare as it's the nearest pub to my student dorm, and also the most affordable. Additionally, the quality of food (those on the regular menu) and drinks, as well as the quality of service from the staff, continues to be excellent.

Popped in for an impromptu drink with friends as we were staying round the corner. We were welcomed by the landlord and made to feel really welcome. Fantastic service and drinks selection. Nice to find a landlord who is passionate about his premises and also knowledgeable about its history. A tough industry to be in at the moment but this guy made sure it didnt affect or spoil anyones experience

Compact just enough room to get a wheelchair around. Food is tasty but it's a bit like gourmet food meets pub grub. Pie was a reasonable size but mash and veg were scarce felt a little pricey for what you got, but it is a city pub not a market town pub.

We all came here last week, Sunday 16th August after a day of shopping. We were only going to stay for a couple of pints and head home on the train. Very impressed with all the covid precautions as we walked in although bemused a little by the fact that it was card only and no cash, but it’s strange times. We were shown to our table and give a drinks menu. I thought I’d have a gin and looked through. Seeing that there were more gins than on the menu I asked for a recommendation and explained my tastes. I was given several options and went with monkey 47 and it was amazing such intense flavours. A great recommendation. My friend had Guinness and another Ubu. Both telling me that theirs drinks were also great pints. We stayed for 3 more rounds as it was such a great time with the staff. And some bar snacks that were such great value. We’ll be back next time we are in town.

Good variety of options available on the new menu. However, I was disappointed with the quality of food and service. You must specify the exact side you wish to have with a burger, otherwise they will default to a salad without asking you. They are also far too busy during lunch hours especially on a friday afternoon so expect a long wait of over an hour for your food.

We ate here on a Saturday lunch and it was lovely! The steak and ale pie was spot on and my husband enjoyed the hunters chicken. The larger was that nice and reasonably priced that we returned in the evening, bringing all our family with us. It was great if you was staying at the Ibis hotel as it was next door.

A beautiful pub. I am visiting in the late afternoon with the lowering sun pouring through the large arched windows. Perfectly volumed music cascading to fill the spaces in conversation. An excellent selection of real ales should please most drinkers along with the usual pub fare of lagers, cider and wines. A wonderfully pleasant environment to while away the time. The 5 stars is just for one particular member of staff called Kayleigh. After a confusion about a group booking, she organised some tables to be made free and was professional and courteous throughout. The pub itself is probably a 4 star as its a bit cramped and the food was quite nice.

This place has good atmosphere for drinks. It’s an old Victorian pub. Unfortunately the food service was quite slow and the food presentation was not as good as in other Nicholson pubs nearby (next time I’d eat at the old joint stock).
