Reviews of The Pelican Inn
P. B.
Lovely little pub with great food.
The two meals for £15 is great value for money during the day.
Great place to stop if you're visiting the beach at Ogmore or Ogmore Castle.
Plenty of outdoor seating for the summer too
S. E.
Reopened 7 weeks ago after changing hands, with a more expensive menu and no specials. Very disappointed as this was my favourite pub in the area. They are still dog friendly but you don't seem to be able to eat inside - the explanation by the waitress about a 'holding area' didn't make much sense. The food we ordered was home cooked and fresh, but still not quite as good as the food offered for a third less and few months ago, so overall lost a star for me.

Lovely outdoor seating area. Good food and generous portions. Close to the castle and stepping stones.
K. B.
Nice dog friendly pub with plenty of outside seating.
Beers were good and reasonably priced, food also was decent and not too badly priced.
Staff were friendly, helpful and service was quick.
Great location and worth a visit.
K. G.
Nice clean place, sat outside and enjoyed watching the sheep. Service was great everyone super smiley and friendly, good prices and food was lovely.

Had a lovely late lunch with my boyfriend here after spending most of the day at the beach. We both had fish and chips which were served with posh mushy peas and tartar sauce was really hot and fresh which was much needed. Thanks guys! 4 stars because £40 for 2 pints of lemonade, 2 bottled sodas and fish and chips is a bit steep and if I had known probably would have stopped somewhere else for a quick bite to eat. But will definitely come again to try something else on the menu on an occasion.😊
J. H.
The food was really fully of flavour and there was so much of it. Would definitely recommend it.
R. C.
Lovely pub with friendly staff, loads of seating inside and out. Went on Sunday so had the Sunday lunch which was amazing (choice if lamb, beef or pork). Weekday menu looked very appealing so will head back.
K. B.
Dined here with a friend last night and the Pelican exceeded our expectations in terms of quality and value for money. We had 3 courses and a glass of wine each and spent ~£35/head which is very reasonable. The dishes were a great fusion of creative gastronomy and country pub cooking with portions that were generous without being overwhelming. I highly recommend the whiskey smoked salmon to start.
The building itself is charming, welcoming and clean, and the staff were attentive but relaxed. We will be returning! Thanks.
I was a little disappointed that (V) options were listed in the menu but allergens felt more of an after thought and we’re just scribbled on. GFO were limited to dishes that didn’t include gluten but a few freezer staples like gluten free pitta, or gluten free bread would have opened up the rest of the menu to individuals with these dietary requirements.
K. C.
Really lovely Saturday evening meal out, delicious food and prompt, helpful service. It was quite quiet, which was a shame as it deserves to be busier. The decor is stylish and modern and I’m sure when the wood burner is going in the restaurant it would be even cosier.
D. C.
Good food. No need to book, order with table number. Pork was a little fatty and not crispy but I liked it. Other half couldn't have eaten it though. The fish and chips were great.
R. G.
Really lovely pub in a beautiful valley. We all had the ciabatta sandwiches for lunch which were lovely and inexpensive. Main meals being served looked fantastic. Very welcoming pub, large beer garden at front.
Z. O.
Great lunchtime venue. Good value off the 2 for £15 menu. £20 for drinks and 2 meals, can’t be bad. Recommend the Chicken Curry Rice and Chips.
S. F.
Thoroughly recommend. Popped in off the cuff...
3 of us in the party all had a different main meal - gourmet scampi & fries, posh fish & chips, duo of pork. Each meal was piping hot, cooked to perfection, well presented and delicious. Finished off with a dessert of meringue with raspberries, raspberry ice cream and chantilly cream.
If you're looking for somewhere with a cosy atmosphere, tasteful decor, welcoming staff, great service with the added bonus of being dog friendly, this is the place!
A. O.
Lunch at 12. 30. 2 for £15 menu as well as dearer options. We had chicken curry, rice and chips and beef chilli and rice off the 2 for menu. Fresh and tasty meals in medium sized portions which were perfect for us. Not too big that we would waste any but not too small to feel you were not getting value.
A. W.
Didnt eat here just came for a drink after visiting the castle nearby.
Is very popular so best to book if you
Want a meal.
Dogs are made to feel welcome here too.
M. Q.
Serves food all day. Nice range of pub grub on the menu. Dog friendly bar area or you can sit in the restaurant. Good choice on tap.
D.
Lovely pub and delicious food. Well worth a visit especially if you own a dog as four legged friends are welcome. Excellent!
s. e.
A lovely pub to stop at after a day at the beach. Food is delicious and social distancing is observed i even had a view of some horses.
P. S. M.
Nice countryside pub, dog and child friendly. The inn has parking and offers outside seating, surroundings are great, right next castle ruins. Selection of beer and ales, wine and spirits (good gin selection). Friendly staff
P. N.
Didn't have food so can't comment, but the beer was good, staff were friendly, dog bar wasn't too busy, easy to get a place to sit, restaurant looked busy.
C. E.
Nice pub with a lovely outside area with views over the ruins of Ogmore Castle. BUT - it’s incredibly expensive!! A double gin & tonic and a pint of Doom Bar is an eye-watering £14.50. So we won’t be going back, sorry.
D. G.
Fantastic food, welcoming atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff. It really is a great little pub. Child and dog friendly too which for us is ideal
S. B.
Lots of character and fantastic location. Decent range of good food if with rustic presentation. Definitely worth a visit. You can also take a stroll to Ogmore Castle just over the road or Ogmore Farm Trekking is opposite.
S. H.
Amazing atmosphere and views. Food was very tasty and we felt very welcome. Very much recommend for food in the area.
M. K.
Visited this evening very last min, but was still greeted with a lovely warm welcome, our dog was welcome too, all staff were lovely, and our meals were amazing, home cooked food, great portion size and very tasty, thankyou, wish we had found you sooner.
m. m.
The Pelican is has a lovely feel adout it, and dog friendly too. We found the menu didnt have a lot of choice and some of the elements didnt work.
Still a place worth the a visit
R. P.
Lovely food, brill good lovely. Good service, not expensive. Yum yum.
G. W.
Lovely pub with great food Tapas, Traditional Pub food and specials. Good drinks, and near to Ogmore Castle.

We were let down by another restuarant so called in to the Pelican by chance. Excellent service and food. Great value for money . Recommend a visit

Lovely staff, great food & good range of beers.
J. P.
Fabulous food quick service and friendly staff highly recommend
R. R.
Very enjoyable meal. First time 2 weeks ago gave it a try,had two starters which were lovely. last weekend went again really great area to sit outside in the sunshine,or in the shade. This time Sunday Roast was on.. Good portions of beef big yorkshire pud, all veg cooked just how we like it, not overcooked at all. Presented beautifully no frozen veg all fresh... We did have to ask for more gravy, but we do like plenty. Also had to ask for carrots as we weren't presented with any, they were also fresh. Altogether a really nice experience. Thank you staff,we shall be back :)
C.
Absolutely delicious food. Decor and service also excellent.
C. M.
Great pub. We met family here for a catchup and rocked up with eleven of us. Lots to do over the road for the children with castle and river. Staff were super helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We'll definitely revisit next time we're in the area.
S. D.
Lovely pub the gentleman who served us was so lovely the only thing the lady with him was a bit moody which didn't make you feel comfortable. I will definitely return and I would recommend it especially if you have dogs water bowls outside and dog snacks at the bar.
S. R.
Great food at great price, with original daily specials! Well located, close to castle ruins and to the beach / River.
M. W.
Lovely food, great staff if a bit slow. Atmosphere is great and location is superb
M. K.
Excellent food and service. Fish and Chips one of the best around.
J. R.
Two out of our 4 meals were served up cold and had to be tended to. But they were great above it and gave us our drinks free. Toilets were nice which is a must for me personally.
J. L.
Great staff, amazing atmosphere and food. We will return.
A. J.
Tasty food in lovely surroundings, with friendly staff.
P. H.
Popped in for food (without booking) after a day out and on balance, enjoyed the experience. The views from outside are good (ignoring the busy road) and has a nice, quaint, Welsh pub feel. You can eat indoors or out (weather allowing) and the menu itself is limited to about a dozen or so different mains per day, which I happen to prefer (rather than being bombarded with too much choice).
The quality of the food was excellent, really very good (as far as pub grub goes) and was brought to the table fairly soon after being ordered. The staff were, in all cases, friendly, helpful and professional.
The only issue I have is the prices. I ordered 2 adults mains, 2 children's mains and 4 drinks and this cost just over £50.00. Yes, you read that correctly, over fifty pounds for 4 plates of food and 4 drinks! In summary, this is a great place to eat for a special treat now and then, but simply too expensive to visit regularly if you want value for money.
G.
The food was excellent. Very tasty and filling. What let this pub down was its customer service. It took an hour for our food to arrive, which wouldn't seem too bad, except there were only five of us ordering relatively basic and quick food. When it came, the staff forgot an order, and took another half an hour to arrive. Some poor management was also apparent, as the waitresses were constantly getting tables mixed up, and asking three times what our orders were. Some disorganisation that could have easily been avoided. Other than that, a nice little pub with good food and an excellent view.
A. G.
Had drinks here before visiting the castle and were impressed enough to come back the following day for lunch. Staff were very friendly and helpful and when our meals came out they were nicely presented and plentiful. Such a shame that my good review ends here, but unfortunately all of our food, lasagna, curry and chilli, was quite tasteless and although home cooked, just lacked any flavour. Recommend the pub and the beer, but the food is lack lustre.
J. D.
Good beer in a great location. Prices not too bad either. Why 3 stars not 5? I am vegan and the only vegan food I seen was "bread and olives". Cannot comment on other food choices but looks like standard pub grub.
R. T.
Lots of outside seating in the sunshine, it's close to Ogmore Castle so handy if visiting the that. We had the vegan burger, tasted great, think it had chickpeas in it. Came with lovely chunky chips.
S. S.
Good quality food and portion sizes! Steak was done exactly how I wanted it.
I liked the decor of exposed beams and heavy solid wood tables.
Staff were brilliant. Very polite attentive and professional.
M. L.
Excellent service, relaxing and calm environment. Great place to enjoy a pint or glass of wine and a meal if your peckish. Didn't realise dogs were aloud inside next time I visit ill be taking my collie along for a drink from their own dog water dispenser. Great service guys keep it up.
D.
I've been here a couple of times now and loved both experiences. The food is really good, and the staff are too. It's a great place to stop and have a meal, or a little break from all the lovely walks in the area. Nice views outside when the weather is good.
J. H.
Our group arrived at pub slightly late after a long walk. We were treated well by staff and the meals were served after a reasonable time considering they were busy on a bank holiday. The food was ok. Our seabass was slightly dry lacking the garlic sauce advertised. Others said they enjoyed their meals. I would visit again.
a. b.
Very nice atmosphere, welcoming. Beautiful spot.
K. R.
Rode from Sarn and popped in was meet with a warm welcome from staff very nice decor the staff were extremely polite and kind defo worth a visit, food look nice but I missed the last shout on food,
D. H.
So impressed with this gem of a pub. The decor was plain and simple with exposed wooden beams, flagstone floors and whitewashed walls. The atmosphere was warm and inviting and we felt relaxed as soon as we arrived. Rowan the barman couldn't do enough for you and the service was perfect with just the right intervals between courses. But the crowning glory was the food which was restaurant quality. Not an extensive menu but plenty of choice with every type of meat on offer as well as fish and vegetarian options. I had the fish and chips and would definitely recommend. It was so fresh and the beer batter was to die for! The cheeseboard had quality cheeses and biscuits as well as all the trimmings such as balsamic soaked onions, nuts and apple ... absolutely gorgeous. My partner had the gammon, a very generous portion which was about an inch thick and cooked to perfection. We used a voucher we'd bought on Living Social so didn't pay but although the prices seemed a tad expensive at first glance we will definitely return and would be happy to pay the normal rates as the food is so amazing.
A. G.
Would have been a 5* review if it hadn’t been for the argumentative waiting staff.
Three out of four meals were excellent in taste and cooked really well, sadly one of the meals wasn’t and when we complained we were greeted with quite an argumentative and quite surly waiting staff member. Working in the industry is hard but sometimes you just need to take the criticism and move on. It wasn’t aimed at you it was at the kitchen.
B.
Lovely atmosphere, lovely staff. The interior is a little on the old side, but I personally like it and I think it adds character to the pub.
The best beef burger I've had for a good long while too!
R. B.
I had the chicken leek & ham pie with chips. When my meal arrived my first thoughts were, looks delicious & what a generous portion! Once I tucked in, I couldn't stop eating. It was excellent, big chunks of chicken and ham, delicious sauce and a lovely crisp pastry. Would highly recommend.

We discovered The Pelican about a year ago. Friendly staff, great ales, fantastic food and a wonderful atmospheric location. We have eaten there many times, and never been disappointed. The it closed suddenly a few months ago, and we were heartbroken. However, it has now reopened under new management who have refurbished the place (but not so much as to destroy the old atmosphere!). We took our son there for a meal recently and it was just as good as it ever was. Good value for money, and I can recommend the wild boar and chorizo burger! A welcome return of an old friend!
J. M.
The Pelican is an attractive and substantial old property with ample parking.
The Pelican no doubt benefits greatly from it’s exceptional location, right next to the super picturesque Ogmore Castle, and a mere stones throw from an incredible stretch of Glamorgan heritage coast, between the dunes of Ogmore and the fascinating jurassic beds of Dunraven Southerndown, which bring many visitors here all year round.
We were among the first in for lunch, just after 12pm (opening time). We made our way in to the bar and were greeted by a smiley, friendly bar person.
The decor is plain and rustic, with rough whitewashed walls, a wooden bar and furniture, and a flagstone floor.
I personally find this kind of decor to be charming and homely although it has fallen out of style in recent years, but that said, it feels authentic and appropriate to the character of this particular pub.
A slight downside to the welcome was that the place was freezing cold inside when we arrived, however the heating was switched on soon after and quickly warmed through. Personally I feel a country pub in the middle of December should be nice and warm by the time the doors are opened.
Disappointingly, there is a huge central chimney breast and fireplace in the bar.. which clearly hasn’t had a fire in it for years. I feel this is a big mistake. The management should know that this one feature could completely transform the character of this pub for the better. A real fire is a hallmark of a good country pub. Please get that working!
I didn’t visit the lavatory but the cleanliness was OK, though the bar top was a bit sticky, and the floor didn’t seem to have been swept or mopped that day, however the weather has been very bad for weeks and so that’s not completely unreasonable. The windows could have done with polish. I noted that the local authority has recently awarded the pub a 4 star rating for food hygiene, which is very good.
On to drinks, I asked to try a sip of beer (hand pulled Wye Valley Butty Bach (one of my favourite beers and a good benchmark), as I was first that day). This is an important matter for me, as I believe you can tell a LOT about a pub by the state of its beer.
I was pleased to find it fresh, bright and tasty, so I ordered two pints right away. This pub clearly knows how to keep beer, although (perhaps a bit cynically), I will say that real beer keeping comes easier in old country pubs as the cellars tend to be much better suited to keeping it. It is not all about the cellar though, so overall I rate the beer well.
On to the food, I had the sausages and mash. This was served promptly, in lovely big china plates. The food was piping hot, well presented, and the plates and cutlery were spotless. The food itself was good and there was plenty of it, although the quality of the ingredients was slightly below par in my opinion, for a place which is listed as a gastropub.
The sausages were nicely cooked and perfectly nice to eat but were a mid-range generic catering type item. Also, the mash was reconstituted, not fresh that day, and the gravy was likewise.
These are petty niggles though, and like I say, it was well prepared, good to eat and importantly, good value for the money, but it’s not gastropub food - this shouldn’t be viewed as a negative, just trying to set a realistic expectation. All in all, I would say it’s hearty, basic pub food, but done well, and good value!
Service was fine, there were plenty of staff and the young lady who served us was charming, friendly, and polite.
We’ll certainly return here, it’s decent.
A roaring wood fire, a little more attention to the front of house presentation and better quality food could elevate this pub to greatness in my book, as it has a lot going for it and I am certain it is not making quite the best of its potential - but it’s a good pub nonetheless!
K.
I was not impressed with the coffee as it was not very hot and quite pricy, I asked for hot milk an was given cold. The otside seating area is nice with a view of the countryside and the riding stables where you can see the riders passing on their trek to the beach which was pleasant.
M. P.
Great menu and delicious food.
S. F.
The food was good, plenty of it and all nice. Nothing to criticise with the meal. Wine good too. A lovely night out
But the interior of the pub is poor (Jan 2018). It's cold, dreary, almost bare walls, shelves/plate racks all empty, looks like a 'work in progress'. A used tissue that had been put on an ornamental butchers block was still there the next time we went - a week later!!! Not good enough.
Two fireplaces there, but the staff member said they had run out of firelighters and waiting for them to come in, hence the cold. Good grief!
We went there on a Wowcher, so the value was excellent at voucher price. The interior is not great, and it's freezing cold in there.
I. G.
Introduced a Londoner to half and half here. She commented on the friendliness. Tidy.
R. H.
Great food, always tasty and a good selection including Vegetarian. There are two sides the bar and the restaurant and the difference is quite noticeable in terms of decor. The venue is dog friendly on the bar side only. Prices are competitive with other good establishments.
N. E.
Good food and beer, friendly staff and very good prices. It wasn't as warm as I'd like for it to be nice and cosy but they topped up the wood burner as we were leaving. It was quite quiet so we got a table very easily but I hope more people visit to kepe it going under the current management that started in May 2018.
S. R.
Our first visit back since they rebranded and reopened. Sharing starters were brilliant and all of our main courses were excellent, I had the mussels and had so much that sadly I had to forfeit my chips!!! Well worth the visit, nicely priced and the staff were great.
H. J.
Really impressed with our visit. Felt covid secure but also still had a comfortable and enjoyable meal. Food was fab, portions were a good and staff were friendly and attentive.
D. F.
What can I say! Beautiful 12 century Inn set along the South Coast of Wales. Fantastic food at ridiculous low prices. Food you would pay twice as much for. Friendly and very welcoming. Would definitely come again.
s. s.
Nice pub all round. Nice sunday lunch. On a beautiful sunny day sitting outside with some nice views. Ogmore castle being one. Staff friendly. Also if u like an ale. They do sell a range of ales. Will defo go back. Only down side. The road it sits on can be busy. But not enough to ruin your day
L. C.
3 pm afyernoon they run oymit of the two startera i wanted .. the soup my son had was so tastkees like warmwd water but he lovwd the bread... my food was absolute bland and the beg was close to raw expensive meals all waste of money im sorry
E. W.
Decent food. Spoiled by a very unprofessional member of staff arguing with another customer (a very pleasant local lady) over a fairly small misunderstanding. Totally intransigent and in fact the customer wasn t party to the key information which could have avoided this issue, whereas the staff were. A small refund would have been far better than the public disrespect to a regular customer. My local family were disappointed. Spoilt a pleasant evening.
S. H.
Excellent pub, real home cooked food so tasty! Will definitely be back. Recommend to visit ASAP you will not be disappointed. Hubby had fish and chips, fish very fresh with light batter and double cooked chu ky chips with peas and tar tar sauce. I had a hulumi burger chunky chips and fresh salad with battered onion rings. Two double scoop ice creams and a drink and we were full and fit to go walk it off around Ogmore Castle. Love The Pelican will be back!
R. G.
An absolute wonderful welcome, excellent service and customer care, we as a family dine here quite often, variety of foods available to an exceptional level, regards to the chef. Looking forward to our next meal, Don't change anything!!
A. S.
Very nice food, may be expensive to some, but you get what you pay for here. The quality of the food and the service is fantastic. The only thing letting it down is the interior decor as it seems a bit dark.
This place is usually busy, so you need to book and when you get there, parking is a nightmare as the carpark is on a steep hill and spaces aren't laid out well.
Overall worth a visit!
S. C.
The pelican is a wonderful small pub, with outside seating, neighbouring a castle ruin, Ogmore. During the covid, they had signs, one way system for toilet, hand dispensers and outside / take away only. It was lovely and wholesome.
J. S.
Great place , specially if you have a dog with you.
Roast was amazing and staff were amazing.
Prices are par for the area.
Steak was overcooked and tasteless (sad as it's local) and curry was tasteless.
T. p.
Called in after spending the day at the beach. Staff very friendly. Establishment very clean and covid friendly had no worries about stopping here with family for a refreshing drink before the journey home.
M. R.
I used to love coming here as a kid, growing up in Ogmore with my parents and brother. Now that I’m all grown up, it’s great to come back sometimes and bask in the nostalgia. The food is decent, and the staff are friendly; it’s a great place for the whole family.
S. R.
Lovely place to stop after day on the beach. Very friendly service. We only had drinks but the menu looked good.
I. C.
Nice food, good selection of drinks with a good atmosphere. Nice views if your sitting outside and always busy so you know its good
F. L.
Perfectly situated pub for a tasty bite and a drink after a day of walking. A nice, varied menu and a few decent cask beers on.
D. G.
Great location after a walk on the beach. A friendly smile to the staff is rewarded with banter and cheer. Excellent food, kids, dog friendly. Leave the wife at home.
A.
Good food, generous portions, character pub with log fire. Dogs welcome! Just would these places would play some Jazz/blues instead of pop/rock!
C. F.
Excellent service and good food.
C. R.
Best dog friendly pub. Excellent and exciting freshly made cuisine with a twist. Not expensive and well presented. Staff always happy and knowledgeable. Fantastic
L. A.
Food was lovely but I found the indoor seating rather lack luster, felt like it hasn't been refurbished in over 100 years
L. R.
Superb food & ambiance. Great customer service & reasonable prices. Dogs are VERY welcome. Never been disappointed whatever the weather.

We came last year and returned again as the food was that good and still is. Good service, friendly staff with a good choice on the menu! See you next year!
G. R.
Easter Sunday. They run out of steak and it's only 4.30pm! Went for the roast beef. Beef was overcooked and cheewy, only two roast potatoes with some blend vegetables and no butter. Drinks were ok!!
J. A. T.
Warm welcome on Fri evening. Good choice of beers and lagers at reasonable prices. Busy but not crowded. Will go again and try the food.
R. Y.
Beautiful food lovely staff.

S. J.
Charismatic country pup serving a selection of beers, ales and great food. Friendly warm welcome, and dog friendly too.

Period pub with thick walls and wood beams. Food very good and nicely presented. Sometimes a bit of a wait, especially when busy. Very popular venue.
B. F.
Really good pub. Had a local beer.

One of my personal favourites in the area.

I absolutely love this place. Old style pub with great food. A bit expensive but it's worth it.
B.
They now have a new chef and the standard of food has just got a lot better. Most importantly the vast majority of food is cooked fresh on site. 👍👍👍
S. B.
Great HPA Ale. Heineken wasnt the best. The scampi was just what the doctor ordered. We will definitely come back, great staff.
D. c.
Stopped here for lunch. The food was lovely and staff fantastic. Thank you.
B. 2.
Been going there for a few years now, but last time food missed the normal high quality, disappointed
C. W.
Fine foaming ale all hail to the Ale love the ambience of the whole area especially doomladen bay, sorry Dunraven bay. There is a sense of time here as captured in that strange poem that's on display down there..
G. D.
Fabulous food and lovely scenic setting. Pleasant bar staff too.
F. F.
Cant say enough good things about this place. Lovely food and the best customer service. Thoroughly recommended.
R. W.

Superb pub & restaurant. Outstanding service. It's very rare I post a review of this nature but on the night I visited I could find no fault. Bendigedig! Diolch yn fawr.

Great location, usually 2 or 3 real ales available as well as the usual, not a place to have a session as prices are circa £4 a pint

L. O.
love the pub ,food was not that good ,beef under cooked not much veg asked for plain burgar nothing on it at all but came with onions lettuce and a sauce in the burgar with the onions, waited about 1 hour after starter for mains,, when we we asked for our bill was about half hour then we got up and asked for bill again ,, will not visit here again such a shame ,,should have gone to watermill where we go often just wanted a change ,,,
