£80 A NIGHT NOT WORTH IT!
Stayed in the hotel for one night only, would not recommend to stay longer. On arrival we were greeted by a young man, who’s customer service was great. Had a meal, as we had arrived early. Bit of a wait for that. It started to get busy with customers waiting to book in. The poor man who greeted us was not only working at the front of the pub, but was having to rush to the back to collect food for the customers. Clearly rushed of his feet!
We were eventually taken to our room, at least half an hour after our booking in time.
My self and my partner were in one room and my daughter was in another with her 4 year old. On entering my room the radiator was on, so the room was warm.
My daughter’s room was cold as the radiator had not been put on. When I mentioned this to the lady, who was just leaving the room, she said that they don’t put on the heating until people arrive, due to electricity prices being the way they are!! That’s funny because my room had the radiator on. The heating had then been put on and while waiting for the room to warm up, my daughter was handed an electric heater, which was removed from the draw.
The lady plugged it in and left the room. I noticed the plug was coming away from the casing, I told my daughter straight away that is a FIRE HAZARD and she was not to use it. Thankfully I had one in my room which I gave her to use. At least an hour passed and the heating was still not on.
To top it all there was a hair in my bed and a hair on the spare pillow, which came out of the cupboard! Makes me wonder if the sheets were changed! Must admit the bed was comfy.
I have stayed in many hotels but for the price I paid, £80 for each room, I personally would not stay again as not worth the money. I’m glad it was only for one night!!!!!

I really enjoyed visiting the hotel, the customer service was incredible and the owner was extremely kind and professional. I loved that the location is very close to the bus stop and a walking distance to the University of Sussex. The rooms were also cosy and very clean. I'll definitely come back.

It says there free parking. This isn't on site. I had to park my car quite far up the road as the road was full.
Bathroom freezing, no heating in there. Could feel some of the springs in the bed. Shower door didn't close properly and additional water was coming out from the top of shower. The bathroom floor always got soaked.
Had to leave the blinds down most of the time otherwise people could see in, not much privacy.
Telephone numbers on the entrance door need updating.
There was a shop and take away next door which was a bonus.
The rooms were modern looking.
There was a small heater which you could plug in which was a bonus otherwise it would have been cold.
You get what you pay for I suppose.
I was in room 7.

Staff member who greeted us was great and answered all questions and explained all we needed to know. We had a one night stay. The bed and sheets all clean, the room had dust and cobwebs clearly visible and the windows were dirty. Also nowhere in the shower to place shower gel. . The sink basin and shower tray did not drain properly as full of hair!!! It’s the little things here that need attention , a proper clean prior to guests arriving.

I was visiting Brighton from Yorkshire for a few days to see friends and family. I had already booked a hotel on the seafront and decided to go a day early but could not extend my booking at my hotel so booked into the Ruby for 1 night. What a lovely little place! I just had a small single room but it was spotlessly clean, and such a comfy bed I had a perfect night's sleep. The room was very warm and I couldn't leave the windows open with it being on a main road but there was a ceiling fan which kept me cool and was so quiet. The reception I received was very welcoming. I would definitely stay here again

Really tasty food, bit of waiting, but well worth it. Food quality is better than average pub. Definitely be back in the future.

When I booked this it was because of the location. The room was clean and simply furnished. The entrance alley is not great. I knew that as it was a pub that there would be some mousebird I didn’t expect to be kept awake until 2am by loud guests and pub customers. They were so loud I could hear every word…words which weren’t pleasant so I was glad I wasn’t travelling with children. I was travelling alone and due to the noise disturbance I didn’t feel particularly safe. Wouldn’t stay here alone again, only with others.

A very pleasant stay in newly refurbished accommodation. Good value for money & very helpful staff that exceeded my expectations. Also the Ruby Pub had a good selection of drinks & a welcoming atmosphere.

The rooms were lovely, clean and soft calming decor. The tea, coffee and water was really appreciated as was the shampoo and body wash left in the bathrooms. I particularly appreciated the roof terrace as a private place to sit in the evenings when I didn't want to go downstairs to the pub. Although they've only recently started doing food again (we were the first customers I believe) the burger and chips was really delicious and very reasonably priced. The house red is highly recommended. We were made to feel incredibly welcome and will visit again. Many thanks 🌞

Excellent staff but the beer pumps could flow quicker......must be so frustrating for those great staff when it gets really busy !!!

Can’t say that was the best experience I’ve had.
The start the rooms are clean and Well presented, they have considered all the sanitary stations and regulations. The rooms are basic but fulfil the need they are intended for. I wouldn’t say this is the best place to choose if you want a holiday but for business it was well equipped.
Luckily the room windows have been decently sound proofed as the traffic going past is very loud and the sound of the pub downstairs is very noticeable. So take earplugs if you are a light sleeper.
The lady at the bar “checking” me in is exceptionally rude and should have nothing to do with customer service. Sadly this put the place in a bad light right from the get go.
I can’t comment on the food as I would not support a place that talks to their guests like it’s a chore.
I do suggest that you please get better pillows! The ones there are rocks and I will probably be going to the chiropractor for weeks to come as a result.

New Landlord as of October 2020 - Lovely chap, Tommy Tickle the clown! Great pub, excellent selection of drinks. Fantastic Pizza. Well connected in the entertainment industry, brilliant line-up made possible by enthusiastic staff and owner. Very highly recommended.

I wasn't expecting too much from a hotel above a pub, but I found that the single room I was staying in was clean and functional for the purposes of a two night stay. The bed was comfortable and whilst there were things that could be improved such as the provision of air con and working window blinds that properly fit the apertures, overall I was happy to be staying there.
The pub below did well to make you feel welcome under the current restrictions, and staff provided attentive table service both inside and out to ensure you were never waiting long to place a drinks order.
It is an 'out of town' venue, so be sure to gauge the distance you'll need to travel to get in to Brighton, which is a few miles down the road.
The food offering could have been better in the pub (only Pizza and Chips) and the hotel could stretch to providing a Bed & Breakfast facility. Fortunately there is a local takeaway next door with a selection of burgers etc... to cater for pre & post drinking sessions, and staff are happy for you to eat your grub purchased from the takeaway on the pub premises.
The staff of both the hotel and pub are very friendly and work hard to ensure you enjoy your stay.

Me and my partner came away for our annaversy/ her birthday and had a lovely stay. The owner couldnt have been more accomidating and friendly! Its in a great location just 15 minnuets to brighton centre via direct bus route from outside. The rooms were perfectly clean and very luxurious will 100% return solid 5/5 stars!!!

Absolutely brilliant hotel just got back from a week long stay at the hotel and I'm already wishing I was back there. Went away for my girlfriends 23rd birthday and we got a great deal with the Ruby we had room number 1 and it was so good room was clean and it was freshened up on the daily. Powerful shower with instant hot water. The car park was out of use because of covid restrictions making them use it as a seating area but saying this I was able to park just a stones throw away from the private hotel entrance door so I wasn't upset at all. The room was kitted out with a ceiling fan , mini fridge and a smart TV so it was exceptional. It had a lovely little roof terrace for hotel users only witch was good for when I wanted to pop out for a ciggy in the mornings. We decided to use the bus system all week instead of driving into the city itself band it was brilliant to use if you come out the pub door turn right follow the road until you come to a underpass then right is the bus stop we used the route 25 every day runs every 10 minutes and its great value for money just download the app brighton and hove busses. We will definitely be making a return in the future thank you so much for having us and making us feel at home.

Would recommend a stay

Stayed for work as close to where I was working, Staff very friendly, rooms ok & comfy bed.
Unfortunately the internet connection for the room was very poor ( iphone & ipad connection regularly dropped out & couldn't get the services provided on the tv that were on offer, Netflix etc ).
This may well be a covid related thing but there was only disposable cups available for tea & coffee, you couldn't get breakfast & the only evening meal available from the pub was pizza ( which was very nice by the way ).
I just felt that as the lockdown had eased there would be a bit more on offer regarding food on offer as nothing mentioned on the website prior to booking.

Lovely staff, helpful and friendly. The room was teeny small but very clean. Would recommend for the price and was close to the city centre.

The landlord is a friendly character and has turned this place into a cracking pub for both students and people their parents' age. Whole room with vinyls on the wall can be played on the deck.
C. A.
Friendly staff - manageress and owner especially, always greeted with a smile. Beer is very reasonable and always a good pint. Its a good pub now, will be even better when lockdown is over. Give it a go 🍺👍
k. e.
Standard of room clean let it down with tissues and other bits down the sidebut other than that suitable place to get your head down despite its local reputation with the pub itself nicely refurbed
R. K.
A smart looking bar with very friendly staff. Prices are decent for location and lack of competition. I was there before a Brighton football match on Boxing day and the place wasn't too busy. it's very spacious and there were plenty of seats free in good positions to see the tv. I must add that the toilets are in excellent condition and seemed very clean.
I'll definitely be back!

Nice friendly environment, could do with water bowls for doggies

Nice place for a quick drink. They unfortunately didn't have a chef the day we went in so had to settle on a swift drink and leave. Otherwise nice and the barman was friendly enough. It was quiet during the day but i can imagine i gets a lot busier on weekends.

Had some great nights down here for the comedy nights, had great laughs, lovely people running and working there a much improved pub caters for everyone
M. H.

Despite some bad reviews we had a really great stay. The room was very clean and quiet. The bar had a good vibe on a Saturday night too, what more could you possibly want?!

Just had our first curry from Ruby. We had the meal for 2, it was great, such good value and one of the best curries we have had in a long time. Not too salty not too greasy and you can taste the distinctive flavours of each dish. The quality of the meat was good too. Definitely my new regular.

Went there for some drinks and WOW! what a change. This used to be the old Hikers Rest pub which was completely run down and boring. This place currently looks ultra modern with fresh interior deco.Lovely place to hang out. They have a student night most Thursdays and offer quite cheap drinks.Defo a hit if you are a student! Wont be going anywhere near the city for my drinks anymore. I will taste their food soon and let you know.

I have been to the Ruby with a friend in the afternoon a few times. Emma, the manager, is very kind and friendly. Now the pub has some plants, mirrors, photos, etc, it is starting to look really stylish, homely and welcoming. A great addition to the Coldean area.

Superb service and food. Amazing comfortable surroundings

Friendly bar staff, place is new and looks like it's gonna be good. They have play the football. Even better on Fridays they have a deal on where you get a free shot of your choice if you buy two pints.

Nice clean rooms and cleaned daily. TV signal is poor and a bit noisy from the pub downstairs. Other from that a nice place to stay.
G. L.
Good vibes in the pub, the beers are cracking and the room of vinyl records is a pleasant surprise.

Great night on Sunday at btb.
Good venue

Staff are excellent and very helpful. Has recently been refurbished and a lot better than it use to be. Pints were served in plastic cups which was very disappointing.
D. M. S.
Great place for a one-night-stay (bathrooms completely new!) but ill suited for more because rooms lack any kind of storage possibilities (like wardrobes).
W. H.
New landlord taken over and really making an effort. Great beer selection and fresh pizzas. Regular events added too.
A. G.
Nice clean rooms friendly staff just far enough out of the city perfect for digs while working away from home. I would definitely recommend it.
