Reviews of The Walrus
J. M.
Our family were lucky to enjoy a wonderful experience at this lovely venue.
We arrived to a warm welcome and were instantly inspired by the decor.
We were seated upstairs for a large group, by the large window, overlooking the street at a big table.
We were treated by a lovely chap, called Dan. He was very friendly, sociable, honest and professional. (All the family commented about his service for days after).
All kinds of meals and drinks were selected. But, I particularly chose the Chicken Burger with pulled pork and coleslaw. I would normally choose a standard beef burger. But, I was sold by looking at the menu.... 😁👍
This met all expectations and more!
I would like to personally thank Dan and the team for a great experience. We understood there was a rather large party of guests also there. But, with no hesitation we were all looked after and in a professional manner.
We look forward to visiting again. Next time to try a Roast Dinner.
Thank you 'The Walrus' 👌😁🤌

Amazing food and huge portions! Polite, friendly, and efficient service too. The place has loads of seating areas over many floors... Its quite a maze! There's even a lovely partially covered roof garden / smoking area. I highly recommend the roast (I had the roast lamb.)
D. H.
Very good (and huge) vegan roast, just needs a vegan Yorkshire pudding. Lovely setting & helpful staff
B. A.
This is a brilliant find. Brighton has many good pubs and restaurants but this one punches above most when it comes to roast lunch. The selection is great and the portions are amazing....with plenty of gravy too! The service is very friendly and efficient....if you like a Sunday roast you need to give this place a try, and I would advise booking a table in the restaurant area.
K. J.
Big Beautiful space. Good for both drinks and food! The portions were huge and has also great vegan options. We tried the fish and chips that comes with tartare and mushy peas and the pasta with vegan meatballs. If you like calamari I highly recommend the starter.
R. F.
Great dining room upstairs, generous and well put together Sunday roast. Stand out however was the service. Unfortunately I didn't get the name of who looked after us but it was friendly, accommodating and professional. Recommend
C. F.
Pretty upstairs dining room, friendly service, decent pub food.
I had the tomato and burrata salad as well as chips, both of which were very nice.
Others’ food (roasts) were apparently also very nice, and there was so much food that one of us took leftovers home.
Good hot chocolate as well.
B. J.
A fantastic bar/restaurant that caters for food, drinks, and dancing! Went here for a couple of drinks during a night out, went to try somewhere else and ended up circling back to make use of their dance floor! Love the roof top smoking terrace, allows you to stay warm while enjoying the fresh air.
I.
Amazing food. Went there for a Sunday roast and it was spot on. Staff were great and helpful as we went with our 7 months old daughter in the buggy on a busy Sunday afternoon. They happily seated us at the bigger table so we have a space for a buggy. Definitely will be going again!
T. F.
Definitely one of the GO-TO pubs in Brighton. You can't not love this place. A HUGE pub with multiple floors and rooms. They even have a dance room right on the bottom floor. Amazing staff and choice of ales/beers/IPA's. The Walrus also has the best smoking area in Brighton, where else can you find a 2 floor smoking area beautifully decorated with vines and large oak tables. LOVE IT
R. E.
Lot's of space, seat on the roof garden area, good vibes.
P. B.
Such a fabulous meal, especially for me as a coeliac. The staff were really nice to two oldies there early. We will definitely return
J. H.
Nice roast! I got the beef which cost £17
The service was amazing, we were very well looked after! It was delicious
J. M.
Amazing pub, went with my family for a Sunday lunch and it was one of the best I've ever had out! Very busy pub, simply because it is so good! Heard the club downstairs and roof terrace upstairs are excellent and well worth a visit!
R. W.
One of Brightons historic old pubs thats just off the seafront, its been a pub for around 200 years so has that old world charm and character. This pub pulls off the trick of being a very large venue with 3 floors but at the same time is warm, cosy and intimate. There is plenty of room here to pop in for coffee and a meal, and lots of comfy alcoves to sit in. The venue has 3 or 4 bars and an amazing atrium like the hanging gardens of Babylon. Theres no problem keeping a safe distance between customers here. Taye the manager was incredibly helpful along with his staff, and you are made to feel very welcome, absolutely one of Brightons hidden gems and not to be missed on any visit to Brighton.
M. M.
Loved this place. Great for GF food and letting dogs in. Such a treat
D. B.
Fantastic food! We came for a Monday roast dinner and was very happy with what we received. Please see the photos of our lovely meals the plates were massive, by far the largest plates used to serve roast dinners in Brighton. The portion sizes are huge and this shouldn't put you off if you were thinking that quantity means lack of quality. The attention paid to each ingredient is spectacular. There is so much flavour with every bite of the broccoli, the carrots, the red cabbage (which we still are a little unsure what was used to flavour that, All Spice, is what we settled on), and the main. They serve vegetarian, vegan and even plantbased options. Incredible. I had the vegan cheese wellington, with broccoli, carrots, red cabbage, roast potatoes and gravy. We will definitely be going back.
P. S.
Lovely roast. It was so big I had to ask for a doggy bag. My Beagle was so happy 🐕
M. J.
Great food, well priced yet almost insanely generous portions. Salt and pepper squid were spot on, as was the modern take on paella with fresh fish and seafood laid on the paella base. Vegan 'meatball' tagliatelle really tasty and humongous portion. Good beer, friendly relaxed service, lovely old pub setting.
A. S.
Starter and main were acceptable. However the dessert was👎🏽. We ordered baked cheesecake and it was anything but...
To be fair the place was extremely busy and the staff all looked a bit out of their debt.
Won't go back there anytime soon
A. B.
What an authentic set up. Food was excellent and our waitress Chloe brought a cheer to our evening. I would definitely recommend.
T.
Really wonderful & welcoming service. We managed to get the last table & they custom made our cocktails for us, which were great. We had a quick nibble of olives & bread with a great flavour butter that I will definitely be stealing the recipe for!
For a quick pre-dinner or cocktails with friends / date, I definitely recommend.
J. T.
Staff are quite rude and dismissive. Had a wonderful roast on one occasion and then the next two were extremely disappointing. Gent on the doors taking the booking was very rude, I arrived slightly late due to railway replacement and was told off like a child. The building is beautiful however in all honesty the place could do with a good clean.
A. M. N. D.
The food is excellent. Portions are more than ample. They do run out quickly though
j. a.
Fantastic Sunday roast
I went for Sunday roast without making a reservation. I sat in the bat area with my girlfriend and we had roast lamb and one roast pork with crackling. Both roasts were superb and tasted very good quality meat. There was plenty of vegan a huge Yorkshire pudding. The service was superb and I would recommend and return for food or drink again
F.
The Vegan Supper Club - I'm not vegan but the food was amazing. Five courses and three glasses of wine at an excellent price. Very creative and rich dishes using refined ingredients. The place is also welcoming and elegant. The dining room is beautiful. Only two small downsides: was a bit too warm inside and they didn't specified on menu and flyers the 10% service charge.
N. A.
This place is in a very easy to get to, location. Has got plenty of space to have a good catch with a fairly large group of friends. However, if you use the their carpark, you must register your registration number, or your pint could be very expensive 1.
P. A.
Extremely quirky neverending maze of a pub. Food is suberb and the beer selection is great. Be prepared to wait on busy sessions if you haven't booked. Check out the hidden roof terraces and absolutely recommend the Sunday roasts!
S. H.
Popped in to use facilities and have a quick drink.
Love it! Old fashioned, old pub/restaurant, bit dark initially with lots of dark wood panelling but large. Sat by front window, had coffee, basic gin and tonic with angustura bitters, Thatchers cider, no food today. Its a
proper pub, no cocktails to speak of on menu. Currently still table service. Lovely low level background music, very nice helpful young staff. Family friendly from what I could see. There is an upstairs restaurant and a roof terrace.
Level wide access from the street. Disabled toilet is discreetly labelled which I liked cos it doesn't get abused by people who can't be bothered to find the normal loos. They are up a few steps, round a corner then apparently it is a bit of a 'rabbit warren' :-) Liked it!
M. S.
A good place for Vegans, beer is good..
You can sit out in a bar or cabin or restaurant.
But the food menu Prices are too high.
V. M.
Beautiful restaurant upstairs in this wonderful pub. Staff are brilliant, friendly and helpful. Great Sunday roast. Wonderful dessert. Good wine list.
C. G. (.
Went out with colleagues for a Christmas dinner on 12/12/18. The menu was already planned beforehand. I was impressed at the quality of service and organisations. The food was fresh and waitress easily available for assistance. It was satisfying that they were able to cater for vegans and vegetarians. I will definitely take friends here. Below are snap shots of the the variety of dishes among the group and a bit of the interior.
E. V.
We love the downstairs club with plenty of nutters and sensual 30+ loosing it on the dance floor, great place for finding a superb night stand
A. M.
Great just had a really good fish, chips and a couple of beers!
J. W.
Excellent service. We arrived early and had a large space to ourselves. Food was quality pub fair.
C. L.
Very friendly staff and respectful of covid restrictions. Food was very tasty and good sized portions - great fish dishes
I. F.
Lovely pub tucked away on Ship Street. An absolute gem of a find. Unique theming throughout which makes for a nice change. Felt very relaxed and cosy when visiting on a cold November afternoon. Will definitely be back.
S. R.
Lovely food, great atmosphere, for the jazz lunch, but the band could stay longer.
Would recommend having the early sitting, as band stopped about half way through eating.
J. a. S. C.
This was a nice pub, great decor and creative outdoor garden. While we were there, a comedy event was going on downstairs and they were extremely busy with orders. Things were a little slow, but still tasty. Great gluten free labeling on the menu, really enjoyed the gluten free fish and chips and sticky toffee pudding.
s. m.
Was refused a treble gin, was scammed out of £20 quid… Told bar was shutting in 20 mins. Tey was a total gem. Pale ale is on point. Would highly recommend. #brightonpubs #brighton #thewalrusbrighton #happycouple

Lovely. Walruses have always been and will always be the single greatest animal that will ever exist. Apart from this wonderful animal the food was incredible. OHHHHHHHHHHHH the food. Yummy yummy scrumptious mc dumptious.
N. C.
Great food and drink selection and the place itself is a great venue whatever your occasion - so many rooms and staircases, its like a maze with great taste in interiors! Dog friendly too
K. W.
Booked here for the roast which was alright. Their upstairs terrace is really nice and a good place for a few chilled drinks. I would return.
F. A.
Beautiful place in the heart of Brighton. The place is very cozy, perfect for a date or friends. Just lovely! We went for a Sunday roast. Lamb was incredible, very tasty and juicy. Average price. From the other guests, the feedback was that the beef and chicken was a little bit overdone. The waitress was very kind and provided a very nice service. Overall experience excellent.
R.
One of the best roasts I’ve ever had in a classic British pub. The Walrus lies just off the beach front and slightly before The Lanes. In interior is fantastic, ambience is wonderful and staff and general vibes are great. The pub also has a wide selection of ales and other beverages.
Would definitely visit here again when in Brighton!
T. H.
Really enjoyable ambience, good selection of beers and wine. Loads of space! Great place for a few casual drinks or a larger event
W. S. M.
Was in the restaurant part upstairs, very stylish and cosy. Good food with generous portions. Lamb was excellent, pork belly was gorgeous too ! Staff very friendly. Only criticism I would give is the gents are a bit run down.
S. H.
Absolutely amazing end to our weekend trip! The roast on Sundays is the best! So much food, great quality and good prices. My friend's all got meat and raved about them. I got the veggie (always skeptical of a veggie roast) and it was absolutely amazing! The pastry for the Wellington was delicious. I never thought my favourite thing about a roast would be cabbage but it was the highlight for me! Definitely recommend, may be hidden away in Brighton but so worth going.
M. T.
Great find. Good selection behind the bar, good amount of vegan and gluten free options on the specialist menu.
What really makes this place is the great decor and atmosphere.
Three bars, two roof terraces, you won’t find another place much like this around central Brighton.
If you’re in town for the day, definitely pay The Walrus a visit.
O. M.
I've been here for Sunday lunch before and I've come back with friends for drinks. Always a good time and no complaints so far 😀
M. T.
A brilliant pub - wonderful food, and a seriously tasty Sunday roast (huge servings!) Well catered for dairy and gluten free diet, staff were really helpful, friendly and knowledgeable..will definitely return!
R. P.
Looked this up before visiting and looked very nice particularly the food, visited weekday evening and was disappointed especially when you compare it with other pubs in Brighton, it's old but shabby not in a good way, did notice the restaurant up the stairs.
Maybe concentrating on that instead...
L. K.
Lovely pub grub with a modern approach. During the week the menu presents classics such as fish&chips, burgers but also tasty veggie options such as dhal curry. Very friendly staff and appealing mock Victorian vibe. Worth visiting.
P. W.
Great night.had loads of fun, well worth going if you like to sing.it was great because you could be the worst singer in the world or the shyest person and it wouldn't of mattered because there was only your friends in the room with you.the greatest night I have had for a long time.
D.
Food was lovely and amazing service from Sam, he was attentive and would definitely go back
G. M.
Had a great meal and the service was excellent. We were on a table of 20 with no complaints. The staff were very professional throughout.
A. R.
A really lovely, bustling pub in the heart of Brighton with excellent staff, drinks and food. And a superb smoking area.
S. D.
One of the cities newest additions, and what a credit it is. Lovely old building that was previously 'Smugglers' the new interior decor has been done in a Victorian/colonial style and has a very comforting feel. There are numerous floors, the ground done out in a more traditional pub setting and has an ambience to match. The first floor is a restaurant and has a more laid back dining experience. The second floor is a roof garden and atrium area that also has a great vibe. The drink selection is very good with a large choice of wines, spirits and craft ales. The food is superb, one of my favourites being the 'Posh Lamb Kebab' which is gorgeous. The staff are very helpful and attentive. Since opening the Walrus has quickly become one of my favourite destinations in Brighton, well worth a visit.
A. G.
What a lovely meal we had here, great food smashing staff, special mention for Chloe, our waitress what a professional, can't praise her enough
J.
A very quirky pub with awesome decor and four floors, I’ve been to Brighton countless time but haven’t ever spotted this gem before!
M. R.
This is a great pub in the centre of Brighton which does excellent food as well. It is absolutely huge with a basement lounge/club, bar on the ground floor, restaurant/dining room on the 1st floor and a rooftop garden. It is very dog friendly and they even get a meal from Bone Idol if you are eating as well. They are excellent at providing eater bowls for dogs as well. Definitely worth a visit if you haven't been before.
d. m.
Great pub excellent food friendly staff careful you don't get lost in there
J. J.
A nice, cozy pub with a few craft beer options but not enough for my tastes. Lots of locals and mix of young and old punters. Will be coming back next time we are in Brighton for sure.
k.
Is what it is really. Bit of a posh pub that I'm sure is great for events but therefore have fairly pricey beer prices.. It is quite pretty though however their "roof terrace" Really isn't a roof terrace but just has a large skylight about 5 meters up.. At least you can smoke out there but do not expect a view of Brighton rooftops as I did 😅
A. T.
Lovely, lively booze over a couple of floors. Great staff, defo will be back!
C. v. S.
Should be called the Warren tbh, loads of nice rooms and benches and bars to sit at. A bit pricy, £6 ish for a pint. Very friendly:)
M. F.
Had the most delicious roast dinner here last week. We all had belly pork and it was absolutely beautiful. Best pork I have ever had and it melted in our mouths. 4 empty plates!
L. W.
Good food, great atmosphere. Small issue with not receiving my ordered dessert was dealt with quickly and satisfactorily
The managers were extremely accommodating adding me to a group booking at the last minute and I'm very grateful to them for doing so.
F.
Went New Year’s Day for lunch. First time ever trying venison, lovely food and friendly top service.
H. R.
Amazing experience listening to a fabulous jazz trio whilst eating and equally fabulous roast dinner. Well worth a booking.
S.
Quail egg scotch egg to start followed by Confit Duck Leg and Homemade gorgeous Chocolate Brownie to finish. Service was great by really friendly attentive staff! Good selection of wines from around the world. Would highly recommend this place 👍
M. S.
Staff are super friendly and know their stuff. You walk in and instantly get the feeling you're at home. But not in a local yokle-type way, but in a more friendly, open maner. The Decor is upmarket vintage, and it's really intreguing. Their beers tasted fresh, and their selection of wines and spirits was good. The roast that I stalked coming out of the kitchen, (unfortunately routed to someone else's table) looked incredible. Absolutely Recommended for a casual drink at least. Maybe more, but I'll let others attest to that.
S. H.
Lovely pub, but super busy
M. B.
First time here! I loved the feel of this place. A nice place to have a chat over a pint with a friend. Reasonable prices for Brighton. And it made for a comfortable place to hang around for a few extra drinks.
M. F.
liked the menu, we tried paella, was also Ok, not the best one I have tried so far though.
We had to book a table, and stricktly for certain time, 2hrs, the annoying thing was that the waiters come and remind you to leave, they did this twice even when we had about 45 minutes left from our booking, not so pleasent!
D. W.
Great food that was served quickly. You might need a map to find your way around the place though.
m. h.
Brilliant spot spread over several floors, and bars, and roof terrace and basement with a DJ Bar and dance floor.
S. P.
Great food friendly and helpfull staff and massive indoor outdoor area upstairs and great club and events downstairs
K. W.
It's huuuuge! Although a very large place, it still feels very cosy with all the little nooks and levels. There's a two level roof terrace with plenty of room.
The food is good and the prices are pretty standard for Brighton.
The times that I've been there the staff have always been friendly and helpful.
L. K.
Well they fitted us in last minute for a meal. Prior to that the waitress in the bar was extremely helpful. The upstairs restaurant is very nice, and once again the staff were attentive and friendly. The menu was nice with plenty of different things for everyone. When the food came it wasn't a disappointment. Absolutely delicious. The beetroot starter was amazing, and good old fish and chips for main was equally delicious. A very nice impromptu evening had by all
B. M.
Popped in for a few drinks and some food. Absolutely lovely however we did find some of the bar staff quite rude in particular the bar manager. Would maybe come again.
M. Y.
Good food, nice relaxed atmosphere and excellent service. The staff were really helpful with my questions for intolerances and they made it really easy.

Love the place it's got great service .with a quirky décor
W. F.
Amazing restaurant, looked random on the outside but the inside...very spot on, beautifully decorated, great attention to detail, wonderful service, food was perfectly cooked! Anyone reading this, make sure you visit The Walrus 1st before any other restaurant, you'd love it!
B. J.
Lovely old pub. Bags of character. Great place to catch up over a pint :)
T. W.
Decent setup and layout although was told by a barman on the restaurant floor that this was definitely a clean glass. Second time I’d asked for a clean one too, “just because of the glass washer”. Actual grime on the inside even after wiping.
V.
I couldn't have been more impressed with my visit! Was looking for a cosy, but smart, Christmassy pub for a festive lunch last week, and this completely hit the spot from the decorations, ambience, style and with utterly delicious food and drink. The service was brilliant too and we were even given some Christmas crackers! Genuinely couldn't fault a single thing and I can't wait to go back. Thank you for a much awaited trip out and a wonderful memory made!
J. E.
Lovely place for classic pub grub. Decor is vintage, very open and welcoming. Staff are very friendly and helpful and over October 2020, they're doing 50% off all food with no limit.
Highly recommend as they also do Monday roasts!
W. F.

Nice and cosy pub, good food, big portion
r. b.
Absolutely amazing for gluten free. The fish and chips was delicious with a light crispy batter! The staff are wonderful and the prices are great!
A. G.
Ate here twice last week, food and service excellent, would recommend to anyone, thanks for two good meals.
D. L.
Delicious food, great service. Loved it!!
G. L.
Excellent atmosphere, multiple rooms, friendly service and overall fun place.
N. B.
Great place foods good bar staff were great
T. M.
Chicken was found in one of our vegan roasts... not great at all. We were not presented with a discount or any offer of retification.
We did however, have a really nice lunch and the food was fantastic (once it was sorted by the kitchen) 2 stars lost as a result of the chicken but I would still return back.
J. L.
Lovely bar staff, very energetic and friendly despite it being a busy Saturday night. Drinks weren't too expensive and they had a nice range of draft.
Has really nice and interesting decor everywhere and had some booths which looked cosy. The door staff were also very friendly. Would definitely come back again!
S. M.
Lovely vegetarian food and great service.
V. D.
What an absolute perfect visit. Top notch customer service and even better food! Spotless restaurant including toilets. Well done to the staff and the management!
F. S.
classic, my favourite place to drink, great vibes, friendly bouncer which is a nice surprise. hadn't had food here until this most recent visit so wasn't sure what to expect, but it was great
T.
Loved our visit... super friendly staff including the security staff... lovely food and a fantastic friendly atmosphere with absolutely no drama's... a really great place to relax and let your hair down... my family and I all had an amazing time! 😁👍
S. B. M.
Amazing. Huge place. Lovely indoors/outdoors place at the very top of the building
J.
Excellent Christmas menu. Waiting staff were on hand when needed.
J. W. H.
Good, son has his wedding reception booked here.
C. K.
The atmosphere was alright. We had food as well and I had the moving mountains burger. I know that most restaurants are on reduced menus and have less staff in the kitchen due to the pandemic. However, I've had moving mountains burgers elsewhere post lockdown which have been a lot better and cheaper as well.
C. L.
Lovely Christmas meal...very attentive and friendly staff
A. M.
Visiting in lockdown you don't get to experience how the pub operates in full swing, but for a first visit I was really impressed. I booked a table just for drinks and I was instructed to take the stairs and follow it down to the basement. On the way you can see that the pub is made up of lots of different rooms, each with a different style and vibe. Down in the basement I felt like I had stepped back to the prohibition era. It was dark, moody and full of memorabilia from the past. If there were a live band I could imagine sitting here sipping on cocktails for hours! Highly recommend!
B. T.
We had our staff Christmas lunch here and everything was perfect! The room was decorated so beautifully and very festive. The table was well presented with plenty of room. The service was top notch- attentive and very friendly. Every staff member we encountered was lovely. And the food?? Delicious! We all loved our meals! There was a slight problem, but that was handled so well that it didn't ruin our experience. I can't wait to return for a meal.
D. P.
I was recommended a visit to this place, and really pleased that I made the trip. This is a proper traditional English pub. Really nicely decorated and themed. Vibrant atmosphere and busy. Service very good and efficient with very friendly staff. I will re visit and try the food out, menu looked really good.
U. C.
Really great service, the pub is really cool and the food was delicious.
F. “. C.
Had Sunday lunch on the roof. Tasty food (vegan) friendly staff. Only down side you are allowed to smoke there, though some people would love that of course, I prefer my lunch without breathing in someone else's smoke.
T. S. (.
Fantastic food, and great decor. Service was also very good. Spacious, cosy, quiet, and up-market.
J. G.
Best pub ever lots of different vibes there
c. m.
Okay, staff lovely, could not give an accurate star as it is November and very quiet
N. W.
Great pub with awesome roof garden
T. D.
Nice boozer. Discovered they had a dance floor of sorts when taking a wrong turn too👌🏾
J. S.
The roast dinner was phenomenal and very tasty. Had the pork which was cooked to perfection and vegetables came in a huge Yorkshire and plenty of roast potatoes. Only criticism would be was the plate was cold so dinner was not really hot but warm enough to enjoy xx nice atmosphere and staff very polite
J. B.
A great pub, top open air garden and lovely staff ♥️
A. R.
This used to be The Smugglers, they've really changed the place and there is an enclosed smoking area on the third and mezzanine floors which has to be the nicest smoking area I've been in ever! Food is good and staff are very friendly and welcoming. Large spaces so good for group get togethers.
A. G.
The food was so good that didn’t even have a chance to get a picture to unload. On my party we all took different food and we were all extremely pleased. From Sunday roast to fish and chips passing by lamb, the food was really delicious. It does get very busy on Sunday lunch time but it is worth the possible wait.
G. D.
AMAZING roasts! The food is consistently sublime and plentiful. You wont need extra sides. Sat in the booths downstairs listening to live Jazz music on a Sunday at no extra cost. Best roast you could ever hope for in taste.
J. S.
Amazing evening at The Walrus. Ankit had amazing customer service - really nice, genuine guy, brilliant with all of us. Only reason for not being 5* is the expensive jeager bomb prices!
J. G.
Wonderful place, part bar, part venue, part curiosity shop! I have enjoyed Saturday evening drinking sessions, work meals and great talks at the Walrus.
Decorated with old books, taxidermy, vintage pictures and other curios, this place is very visually appealing! It's huge too, with a sprawling bar area, event spaces and a fabulous indoor/ outdoor area where you can smoke.
The food is pretty expensive but very good with a frequently changing menu. The bar is well stocked with plenty of variety and the bathrooms are gorgeous!
Definitely a place worth checking out if you are visiting us here in Brighton! And keep an eye out for the interesting talks and other events held here :)
B. A.
Great pub beer and food excellent
c. h.
Very good food and drink ,very nice decor, staff very good and friendly, great meal. 👍

We came to the vegan supper club. Really loved it in that building - so atmospheric. Staff nice. Food portions large. Starter was brill - main course of 3 aubergines only so-so, but pudding brill again, so a rating of 9, 6, 9 from me. Wines were good too.

Had our team Christmas meal here. OMG!!! Absolutely fantastic food. Huge compliment to the Chef/'s. Never had turkey served that way before. Definately want it again. Staff great, very attentive, venue has a fantastic feel and great atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Very chilled neighbourhood pub
Lovely "spirit"
But just too costly for me
M. B.
We had our work Christmas dinner here. The booking process was very good and efficient and the staff dealt with any queries I had. We were allocated a nicely located table in the small dining room upstairs and the service we received was excellent. We all enjoyed the food and it was nice and easy to go the bar located nearby to get our drinks to avoid an messy bill to sort out at the end. We would definitely return.

Starters were enjoyed by both of us. Mains, I do not recommend the beer battered chips I would not recommend as they came over oily and the chips where made to a crisp heavy with the oil n deeply crispy I could crumble them with your hands ...should never have been sent out to us...quite embarrassing as you see other enjoying nice white chips the way they should be. Disappointing. But nice of them to refund the starters as a result.
H. D.
We had our Christmas Lunch in The Walrus - the place is really lovely, beautifully decorated interiors, very friendly and accommodating staff. Honestly cannot fault the reception and the pub's style.
BUT. There is a but.
The food was quite average. And I mean, even tho we knew it was a pre-ordered Christmas meal, and we have adjusted the expectations, well it was average. There were ups and downs - the veggie option was delicious. But the turkey was just underwhelming. Roasted potatoes tasted like out of a packet/freezer. Which some might like, but it's not what we hoped for.
I would still recommend the place as it has a great atmosphere, reasonably priced wine and very attentive service.
D. T.
Had meal with friends here for the first time tonight. Good menu with 3 main course vegetarian options. One friend had one of these and had no complaints. In fact all of our meals were v good. Fish cake starter was well presented and tasty. The resturant upstairs where we were ate had a nice decor, good atmosphere, and staff were efficent and approachable. One small downside was it took a while for the main courses to arrive. Nice pub bar area downstairs. Worth a visit.
M.
Great food and staff. Place is massive!!
H. J.
Really nice spot. I haven't eaten here but I have heard the food is great. I love the vibe and they have a great selection of drinks. It's no more expensive than every other pub in Brighton, and it has a really nice partially outdoor roof terrace area which is great if its summer. They have DJs and live music sometimes which is cool and its definitely a place you can feel welcome no matter what type of person you are.
A. C.
Beautiful pub. Food was average but it was the day of the Brighton marathon so they were extremely busy
J. A.
Good pub, no idea about the food. Covered roof terrace, Sound!
E.
What a great place to spend an evening. The atmosphere was so nice and the food was so good - certainly not the typical pub standards. Worth every penny.
B. E.
Visited today for lunch . Staff were excellent very helpful and just seem to be happy to be working there. Food came out quickly and was delicious.
First time trying this pub and will certainly go back . It's so hard to find a restaurant that ticks all the boxes and this place does . Well done to everyone working there
M. A.
Organised a tennis club night out for 40 people last Friday and had nothing but positive feedback from everyone that attended. We had a three course set menu designed for us and the food was great (far too much of it!) and the service fantastic. All the organisation before the evening was very smooth and Alan, the manager, was always very helpful dealing with any queries. The pub itself is such a great venue and had a lovely feel about it. Highly recommended.
J. H.
Gluten free beer on tap, this place is huge and a decent boozer
h. e.
Massive place. Lots of floors and rooms. Roof garden terrace. Nice atmosphere and decor
p. d.
We had a roast last sunday in the pub section with a group of friends and it was perfect. The staff was friendly and attentive, the food was very good and it was great to have different options as we had vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters in the group. The booking process was also very easy (I had a question about the menu and I received an answer within 24 hour). We will definitely come back !
K. E.
We had our Christmas Party at the Walrus. Alan, the General Manager, was nothing but absolutely wonderful all the way through. From planning to execution, he was fantastic. The food and atmosphere was on point. It took a little while to get drinks at the bar (there were 25 of us), but all in all, a great night and a great venue. I highly recommend going there.
G. S.
Excellent food - both vegie/vegan and meat options. Great for a Sunday roast. A bit expensive but huge portions. Best to go when you’re really hungry! Amazing space outside upstairs, particularly when it’s a nice sunny day. But also good in cooler weather when you can snuggle up inside in a booth. Wheelchair/buggy friendly. Although the baby change table is very high up so I was changing a nappy at eye level (however I am only 5ft). All in all a wonderful place to visit.
A. S.
Great food, lovely upstairs terrace, friendly helpful bar staff!
C. t. M.
We booked a lovely (large oval oak table under the chandelier and set in front of large windows) for 12 in celebration of my daughter's 30th birthday and it was a truly wonderful evening. The food was very good with generous portions and service was friendly and attentive. The planning stage was well managed and any little extras I wanted to arrange were happily catered for, which made the event super personal too. Thanks to the lovely servers who did their jobs very well!
P.
The wild Game supper club was beautiful experience food, service and ambience wise. Food was well presented, burst in flavours but heavy on a stomach :)service was not intrusive, and had good pace and timing. The beauty of dinning room was very festive, but at the end of the dinner it just became slightly too hot, as there were more people in the restaurant.
I would totally do it again and I recommend to anyone who loves fine dinning.
M. D.
Me and my husband had lunch here today. Amazing food and lovely atmosphere. Staff are very helpful and friendly especially Rob and Molly who were enjoying their day off and still found time to help us choose our great meal from the menu. Will definitely visit again.
M. H.
Went as a group of 5 last night. We sat in the Dining room which was lovely. The food was delicious and very well done. Service excellent. The whole place is a great experience. Thoroughly recommend it!
M. C.
Loved it, 1st time I had been there. We were a table of nine for pre-Christmas celebrations. Atmosphere was great and the food was superb. The waiting staff were lovely, attentive but blended into the background rather than being in your face. Highly recommend. Will revisit when next in Brighton. Thank you all
S. T.
We booked the Rugby on Sunday afternoon and were shown to a table in front of a large screen. Every table was reserved so it was a controlled sized audience and therefore a comfortable experience. We booked a table upstairs for a roast after the game. Their roasts are very good apart from their Yorkshires which are oversized and on the tough side. Staff always friendly, welcoming and helpful.
B. J.
Lovely old pub. Bags of character. Great place to catch up over a pint :)
C. R.
Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and a great drink selection. Fab roof terrace!
M. M.
It's a great restaurant. The vegan 5 course night, plus wine is amazing. On this visit we went to the roof terrace for Sunday lunch. Whilst the roast was a little too sweet (gravy was sweet, red cabbage was sweet, roasted carrots and the Wellington were....er....sweet), it all tasted delicious.
E. T.
Lovely decor and atmosphere to this place. Staff were friendly and joked with us, making us feel very welcomed and relaxed
R. C.
Many floors of sprawling, labyrinthine old English pub, lots of dark wood, old pictures, red walls, that kind of thing, summer beautiful rooms. Marked down as we ate here in a group and the vegetarian food was disappointing: tart was fine but a bit clumsy in execution; main was a huge pumpkin stuffed with some tasteless sludge - a bit big, heavy and uninspired; the Christmas pudding however, was quite good.
R. M.
Really good food, nice atmosphere and friendly staff.
Eclectic decor, very Brighton 👍👍
L. F.
Had a lovely meal out with friends on a Friday night. Great food, generous portions, one of my friends is vegan and she had the vegan Sheperd's Pie which she said was nice. Great service, friendly staff, and not over priced either. Will definitely go back!!
V. D.
Had the best time at the walrus! We had our engagement party there and couldn't be happier!! The music was cool the pub has lots of room and the private room we got is just the best! Thank you to the stuff and everybody that make our night amazing!!
P. H.
We had our wedding dinner for 27 at The Walrus and it couldn’t have been better. The food an drink was amazing, the service great and the place itself is beautiful. They were very kind and accommodating, letting us deliver decorations and cakes in the morning and then setting them out for us before we arrived. We’d like to mention Molly specifically who made set up the tables for us and made the whole experience a pleasure. We didn’t even discuss the music but what they played was exactly what we would have wanted. We would highly recommend The Walrus to anyone not just because of the professionalism but also because of their kindness towards us, not to mention the quality of the food!
C. S.
Deceptively big pub. Totally feels like a TARDIS as you walk through it. Lovely friendly staff, beer priced the usual for Brighton so can't complain at that. All round enjoyable place. Go for a few beers and the next thing you know you are dancing the night away!
L. M.
A very Friendly pub for Sunday lunch, the food was excellent and the staff very accommodating, we had a party of 7 including 1 six year old, all of us enjoyed the food, clean plates all round! The cheese board was a very good value as was the whole meal.
I. D. B.
I went twice to this restaurant. I love the place, but I had two different experiences. The first time it was absolutely great. Great food, great atmosphere, we ordered a la carte menu, and it was a Saturday for lunch. I had soup as starter and the confit duck, 5 stars experience. The second time, I went on a Tuesday evening just for a hamburger, and it wasn't good. The bread seemed a little bit chewy (maybe old, but not sure), the meat meh and it was nothing special considering the price. So on average I would say 3.5 stars, but happy to go again and try again the food.
T. M.
A real TARDIS of a pub this one! It goes on forever! Multiple floors including a traditional pub on the ground floor, dance classes and gigs on the first floor, a restaurant floor... Then, not one, but TWO semi outdoor floors up top offering a comfortable smoking area! Beautifully upholstered seating, excellent food and friendly staff! Unsurprisingly this place is always quite busy but you never have to wait long to get served. Highly recommended! We use it a lot for special occasions as there are lots of books (or even separate rooms) which hold a good sized group and can be reserved in advance.
J. S.
Charming pub just a short walk from the Brighton seafront. They appeared to have a decent selection of beers on tap too. The decor was quirky, very neat and tidy inside, comfortable booths and tables. The absolute highlight for me though was the food - the pizzas were brilliant, quality toppings, well cooked, cannot recommend them highly enough!
A. H.
Love this place. Real tardis. We came here for a quick drink after and stayed for the night. Smart looking restaurant on the first floor plus the roof terrace above. Food is deliscious but my girlfriend found portions too large. I liked it as I had hers as well. Really good pub, love it.
S. M.
Good food, although portions are a little too large! Decor is great, on a par with a very select restaurant, the only things that let it down was the choice of music, and a little too loud, and the staff dress code was more in keeping with barn dance! Tone the music down and smarten up the staff attire and it would be great and get 5 stars.
S. M.
Great meal, great beet with plenty of room to spread out. Check out the top floor.
A. C.
The food is delicious staff were lovely.
Well labelled gluten free and willing to answer any questions.
Recommended to anyone a lovely pub..
V. C.
Went to The Walrus for New Year's Eve and had a fantastic time. Loved the way it has been redecorated and you can always judge a place by its toilets which were very good.
It was an ambitious menu, 5 courses, but well presented, and couldn't fault the taste
We sometimes had to wait for the next course but given the logistics I think they did very well. We were a very happy group 😊
S. L.
Great Sunday roast,nice staff,great service
T. H.
Good range of beers, friendly welcoming staff and acres of space to talk and laugh. Love the open upstairs spaces in the warmer months. Radically engineered with real vision to cater for all. A real TARDIS of a pub.
A. Z.
Great selection of roasts. Beef, lamb and pork belly options were delicious. Staff were extremely polite and even allowed us to leave our bags for a few hours before our train.
J. W.
The Vegan pop-up Suppers here have been an absolute joy! The food is incredible and the wine pairings sensational.
I know we are fairly well-served for vegan eats in Brighton but this is top-notch stuff and beats anything we have had elsewhere (including the most well-known vegetarian restaurant in town).
We have been to three and will come to as many as we can in the future - would recommend super-highly!
S. W. (.
Great pub food served by delightful staff in a spacious and interesting building.
Lovely roof terrace.
Nice range of well kept beers.
Recommended.

One of the best roast dinners I’ve ever eaten! And great gluten free options for my partner. Highly recommended.
G. J.
Just had our valentines day evening here off the set menu. Food was excellent but our service was better. Our waitress truly took her time explaining everything to us and made us feel very comfortable. Thank you so much Genevieve for making our night. <3
R. T.
Really cosy (and big) pub with a good selection of food. Went for a roast and will give it a solid 7/10 due to the gravy not being great. Cauliflower cheese however was out of this world - the cheesiest I've ever had!!
D. D.
It's my regular for a Sunday ròast these days.
The service and food is great. Really terrific flavoursome beef.
I really like the fact they have either the pub to dine in with lots of little nooks a crannys for tables or a more formal restaurant vibe upstairs.
T. C.
Had a very Christmassy meal at the Walrus on Sunday. The beef was beautifully cooked. The staff were super-busy but always polite - even if we did have to chase our drinks order a couple of times. They took a couple of beers off the bill for our trouble, which we weren't expecting!
J. P.
My starter of beef carpaccio was heavenly. The cheese board starter was also great. Plenty of vegan options. The decor was Victorian and well done. My only problem was with my burger, after the starter, I had expected it to be great, but, unfortunately, it was average. Next time I'll pick something else...
A. F.
Nice Christmas meal with friends. Food was good as it usually is here, but arrived luke warm. Service was friendly and efficient also. The one issue worthy of note, is that we tried to book a table for us at 16:00, but the confirmation said they could fit us in a bit later at 16:30 which was fine by us. However, as soon as we sat downm we were told it was last-orders for food, so were rushed into choosing.
B. M.
Well decorated pub with a good vibe, we had a table at the back, enjoyed a good selection of decently priced drinks and didn't have to wait long at the bar. The music was great!
M. P.
A great pub which seems to perfect the art of being a Brighton locals vibe pub in the centre of town. Very friendly staff with excellent door team keep it vibrant and welcoming. There's an incredible amount of space so it's good for larger groups, just a few of you or to pop in for a quick one. The roof garden is a spacious haven from the hecticness of the south laines too. Brilliant pub and dining space, there's also a venue downstairs. 5 stars.
S. E.
We were having a drink here on a Saturday evening with the Fifa World cup going on. Still managed to get seats (4 people).
2 of the people are smokers. They could smoke at the terrace while still sitting with us.
Beer and Cider were good. Nice and not too loud music.
Mix of all ages.
Not sure about food as we had eaten earlier on.
A. H.
We had a works Christmas dinner at the Walrus last week and it went really well. Paying the deposit and balance online before hand was SO easy - and they printed name cards with everyone's menu choices so no one had to remember what they had ordered. And we were each able to get our own drinks from the bar throughout the meal so there was none of the working-out-the-bill nightmare at the end because there wasn't a bill! And the food was really tasty too and no errors. Highly recommended.
L. B.
Excellent meal, friendly, engaging server who made you feel most welcome. A friendly suggestion was to include a serving of crusty bread with the chowder from the salmon dish which is too tasty to get away!
S. W.
We went for Sunday Lunch and it was superb - my beef tasted beefy and according to the others, the lamb was lamby, chicken chickeny and pork porky. This may seem obvious but often a Sunday roast just has the generic texture/taste of meat. This was exceptional. We ate in the pub rather than the restaurant and definitely will revisit.
P. S.
I booked a room for a private function with my work. They were fast at replying to my emails about hiring a room even though it was very last minute, they explained everything clearly. When we got there they were very helpful, the staff were lovely and made sure we were happy. Would definitely recommend.
C. C.
Eight of us visited for my 60th Birthday dinner. I was advised when I booked that we would be able to choose from the 'game night menu' or the a' la carte, but were told on arrival that the game menu was not available as we had not pre-booked, which was disappointing. The food was generally delicious, (apart from one steak which was rather tough, but when this was mentioned it was promptly taken off the bill). The service was efficient and non-intrusive and there was no pressure on us leave. The dining room is impressive (although a little too warm when we visited). One minor criticism is that the male WC is two floors down from the restaurant! Overall we all enjoyed the experience and I will definitely return.
B. F.
Excellent pub, with friendly fun staff and a decent and unusual beer garden/smoking area upstairs. The basement had a club which was pumping out back to back 80's bangers and the manager Taye was particularly welcoming. Would highly reccomend.
C. D.
Only had a drink but what a charming place. Well worth the visit.
A. H.
Love the place it's got great service .with a quirky décor
S. t. I.
This place is AMAZING, I only recently found out about it - the smoking area is huge and feels like the inside of a house, which is perfect if you are out at night with a big group of smokers. It is a big venue, which are few and far between in Brighton, and does not get overwhelmingly busy like The Mesmerist does. Would recommend!
J. A.
Absolutely fab staff, atmosphere and the food is superb - often go here and it is great
K. L.
Great Pub and music venue in the heart of Brighton.
We were here working on a photo shoot for a Brighton choir. The staff were helpful and friendly.
The food is good and well priced, and the bar is well stocked.👍👍
J. L.
Good portions for Sunday roast. Veggies and roasties were not great. Need some work. Good service and it's a good boozer with loads of great places to sit. Perfect for a big group celebrating a birthday
E. c.
Best beer garden in Brighton.
I have to say though, I’m a regular and have never seen customer service quite like Kitty’s. She was an utter delight, working the bar solo, looking after every single patron and having a laugh with us. The pub would probably only get 3 stars without her!
T. M.
Love this place. Had a lovely Sunday roast. Food was great, staff were great. Just a great all round experience.
Highly recommended. Only 4 stars. Roast potatoes and veg were not piping hot. Told waitress and was offered another meal but I said it was fine as this is how I like my potatoes and veggies so I can dig straight in but I’m sure it would not be to everyone’s taste. After a couple of minutes the waitress came back and offered us complimentry deserts as a good will gesture. Omg the banofee pie desert was to die for. If it wasn’t for this small hiccup would have been 5 stars plus.
R. M.
Food was pretty average for its price and not enough air circulation when sitting inside, kinda stuffy. Otherwise decent decor and facilities.
R. C.
Great Roast in a big busy pub
M. R.
Our son had his wedding reception at the Walrus on Valentine's day. Staff couldn't be more helpful, food was delicious, space was perfect and great variety of rooms to choose from. Thank you. Highly recommended.
L. B.
I celebrated my 30th birthday here on Saturday and I can't recommend The Walrus enough. From booking, preordering (as we were a large group) and the service on the day, it was fantastic. Staff were really friendly, attentive and the food was delicious. Definitely consider this venue for large bookings in a lovely setting!
a. r.
The best traditional beautiful warm friendly pub in Brighton by a wide margin. I know they spared no expense making such a gorgeous stereotype of the perfect English Country Pub..The Roast dinners are to die for..Wine by the bottle is very reasonable for Brighton...Huge enclosed smoking room for the coughing crowd..It really is like walking your dream pub...All the staff are young...happy..and helpful...Absolute Drinkers Heaven....Enjoy
P. B.
Visited on Saturday 31st March. Impressed by the space inside and the older charm of the decor. Nice mix of people. And a log burner to boot to keep the chill out. Would have liked to spend longer there, but had dinner reservations elsewhere. I will definitely put it on my shortlist for another evening out.
J. S.
Great venue, food and service.
S. A.
This place is insane!! Loves the decor, the roast dinners are 10/10 and huge! Definitely worth going, very helpful and friendly staff. Great roof top smoking area too!!
M. W.
I had one of the best night out I've had for years on Saturday. Adam Barron led us through a night of stomping classics old and new. Th walls were shaking and we we were making it ... brilliant atmosphere, hard working staff, mixed crowd, friendly atmosphere, sensible security .. I can't wait to go back for more.
C. B.
What a gem. Went here on a Saturday night, basement area with dancefloor was opened and cheesy 70/80s bangers played all night, brilliant. Friendly staff, drinks not horrendously priced, nobody looking for a fight, just people having a good time.cant really ask for much more
J. M.
Came here a little while back on a friday evening with a few friends. The interior is rather impressive and massive. Garden at the top is lovely. However, I felt one concern. a dozen of the staff seemed to be on training or trial shifts and due to the hectic environment, looked overwhelmed . Consequently they did not have the information to help with enquiries from customers and they also did not seem to be given enough guidance from manager. I am sure however that this may not be fault of management and most pubs are chaotic on weekends anyway. .Would return again (but maybe on a week night!)
G. R.
A kooky place run by the same folks as the iconic Lion and Lobster. Spread over 4 floors, with a bar at the entrance, a restaurant serving great food (although usually disconcertingly quiet), a fantastic glass covered roof terrace, and a basement that they tend to have either live music or show sports. You can normally get a seat without a problem but bar service can be slow.
Unique and interesting venue that seems like it's been there forever but was extensively remodeled and opened in 2017.

UPDATE: After I posted my review below, where I gave it 2 stars, I was contacted by the manager, who was concerned at the level of quality we experienced. He had spoken to the chef to find out what happened that night, and kindly offered me vouchers to come back and give it that third chance. I went not long thereafter and I'm very happy to say that the experience was very good this time - a significant improvement! The food was good this time and we (there were 3 of us) were happy with our meals. The service wasn't as attentive or friendly as previously but it was proficient. Most of all I was impressed at how promptly and well the management responded to my concerns. A masterclass in how to manage customer complaints that many businesses would benefit from. For this reason I have increased my rating to 4 stars. Many thanks to management.
Original review:
While the menu looks tempting and the service is great, the food is overpriced and very disappointing. Last night was the second time we'd been to the Walrus for food and the second time we had to send food back because it was so bad. The first time was a Sunday roast - the quality of the food was poor and cold; for example, the roast potatoes were so old and shriveled that the were like chewy, dried-out nuggets instead of the crispy-outside-fluffy-inside you expect from a roastie.
But it was the end of the service and the wait staff dealt with our complaint politely and fairly, so we decided to give it another chance with dinner a few months later. Unfortunately, it was bad once again. The Beetroot Crêpe, with cashew cheese, mushroom, basil & rocket, bore no resemblance to a crêpe at all. It was more like a mushy, pink patty, with no pancake visible. My partner ordered the beefburger with blue cheese, and it arrived with a cold lump of blue cheese balanced on the top of the burger instead of a nicely melted cheese. He said the burger itself was dry and ended up sending the whole thing back because it was inedible. My vegan burger was ok and the chips were good, but it wasn't worth the £11 price. Despite the high promise of the menu and the charm of the servers, we won't be back a third time.
P. S.
Visited for a family get together over sunday lunch. The decor and service was excellent and the sunday lunch was best ever. Super yorkshire puddings as I was visiting from Yorkshire and was very surprised as they were amazingly well risen and tasty! Easy online booking with fast response with attention to detail, the high chair request.
k. k.
Cool pub with plenty of seats, and whats awesome, you can go seat under open roof, where you can smoke. Only one thing, when you like that smoking area in the roof , there is toilet only on the bottom of place, so it's for one, who like the exercise 🤟

Lovely atmospheric pub. Suitable for intimate gatherings with friends and family

Just had our amazing Christmas Party at the Walrus under belly, booking was easy, staff were lovely, happy and helpful, we order the canape buffet which included Vegan and Gluten free, DJ afterwards. 50 people all really happy. Happy Xmas

Super Sunday lunch, great atmoshphere

We had our engagement dinner at the Walrus - and Kelly was really awesome in organising the event, even with all the cancellations or additions last minute. The actual venue is absolutely beautiful, my major issue with the whole event was that my meal wasn't confirmed somehow, and the kitchen completely messed up. This resulted in all 19 of my guests getting their food, and I had to wait another 10mins for them to finish mine. Overall, I would say it's a good venue and people enjoyed their food and dessert.
J. T.
This is now my favorite Brighton pub. Gluten free beer on tap and specalist gluten free and vegan menu. The food is also excellent. The decor and layout are phenomenal. If you're going to visit one pub in Brighton make it this one.
S. J.
Delicious Sunday Roast! Very busy though....ensure you book! Also double check the bill ...we inadvertently had extra wine added to it, but resolved quickly and without fuss! Would visit again!
l. r.
Nice normal pub always head here when in Brighton
C. M.
A real hidden gem. Would never thought there was such a decent pub was down that little road. It's a bit of a tardis from the outside butonce your inside it just keeps on going back.
The Sunday lunch was amazing! Best I've had in Brighton.
The outdoor terrace is really nicely done.
J. D.
Not many places quite like it. Almost like a gangster's speakeasy. A great atmosphere
L. P.
Seafood Supper Club was wonderful, the sea bas was gorgeous. Waitresses, lovely and the restaurant had a nice romantic ambience. Enjoyed it so much that booked in for a Sunday roast
K. S.
Had a look at the menu and thought we were on to a good thing, vegan options and gluten free options, unfortunately no gluten free vegan options which was disappointing. And although I advised I was vegan, I still found cauliflower cheese on my plate.
Service was friendly though, and they were kind to my dog.
If they just could offer some more options for us difficult people with annoying dietary requirements!
I. B.
Nice pub in Brighton, very busy Sunday lunch time which must be a good indicator.
2 minutes away from the Lanes.
Sunday Roast on the menus with a good selection of other dishes.
Vegan ales available if that's your taste.
S. M.
Wonderful pub. Two levels of beer gardens. Clean restrooms. Friendly personnel. And they carry my favorite bitter, Harvey’s Best Sussex Ale.

This is a fantastic pub and a must visit whether you're a local or just visiting Brighton for the weekend. Its a pub with great staff and has a quirky but traditional feel with its multi-level design and decor.
The first/main area as you walk in looks like most nice pubs with a few cool booth type seating areas towards the back but as you venture deeper in to the building you realise there is more than meets the eye! To the left of the back end of the bar is a small area that leads on to a whole other room and in it, along with more seating, sits a 'pretend' bar and a dapper pretend barman. There are a couple of Windows in this area pointing out to the main bar area, adds to the fun of the place. Before turning left to this area, further at the back, are stairs down to the very spacious and clean toilets and a room that is used for events or private functions. The other set of stairs go up to the restaurant area (stairs to this are also at the front end of the building). If you don't fancy stopping there then you can go up a further level to a covered smoking area, but not like most covered smoking areas I bet you've seen before; it feels like you're still sitting inside, which I thought I was.. wondering why people are smoking.. until a few drops of rain fell on me. Looking up you'll notice in the middle of the high ceiling is a grilled large hole for ventilation.. now it all makes sense.
I love this place and visit regularly now, discovering something new every time I go but the only reason for 4 and not 5 stars is the food, some items are nice but overall it's a limited menu of average quality. Now I'm only talking about what's served in the main area of the pub, I am yet to try the restaurant area and see what's on offer there.
In addition they often host great live music in the pub area and events in the function room downstairs.

We booked our work Christmas meal on Saturday 1st December we had a great time the food was really tasty with good size portions considering the pub was absolutely heaving. The staff were amazingly friendly....we had a great night!
T. E.
A friendly pub with a big beer selection. Real warren of a place. Lovely and cosy and nicely decorated. Would be Keen to try the food. They show sport downstairs so a real mixed bag. Will definitely be back!
K. H.
How did I not know about this place already? Lovely roof garden

Feeling like a property English pub.
Great variety of beer. Staff friendly and helpful. Services quickly desire being very busy.
Will seen it out next time in Brighton.

Popped in for Sunday lunch with my parents. Lovely corner table by the window, great timely service, delicious food and a HUGE Yorkshire pudding. Was exactly what we hoped for, many thanks.

The smugglers is dead. Long live the Walrus!
Food, beer and a pleasant atmosphere. What more could youbask for? Maybe an awesome roof terrace/garden - handy, because this place has that and it's awesome! Can't wait to go back.

This was a difficult review to leave as the food was good and bulk of the staff friendly and helpful.
However ,as we had a table of more than 10 we were asked to preorder our roasts, this we did and received a confirmation from manager saying our booking had been updated with our order.
On the day however we were told they had no knowledge at all of us pre booking ,and a lot of items were not available, until i showed (who i presumed was the manager) my phone with his email on it.
This would have also been in the pubs email sent folder.
After this we were now told that everything apart from two roast chickens were available but that we could have chicken breasts instead of whole roast chicken.
This was great ,and tasted even better
My score is based on the fact that until i could prove we had pre booked the stance was no knowledge of booking, so can't provide all meals, and no real options offered to us,so not great customer service, and actually spoilt the evening a bit for us and the two people celebrating birthdays.

Very professional friendly service in a newly renovated beautiful bar/restaurant. Food was also fantastic. The ambiance of this newly refurbished building reminds me of something from a East India Company. Beautifully decorated, really liked thus place.
J. M.
Good atmosphere, cozy pub. Loads of seating, like a Warren. We'll stocked bar and the food was really good. Lamb shoulder melted, it was a quasi-religious experience.
C. L.
Time and time again a really special dining experience in the surprisingly delightful restaurant area upstairs. There is also a great area for larger party's with a diverse menu with something for everyone. Highly recommend.
D. B.
Good Atmosphere and polite staff. Ordered a Cobra Sea Bass for main that had an unusual crumb coating...very experimental, however, it was a bit disappointing as the crumb overpowered the fish itself, which isn't really needed. Keep it simple and tasty. Good selection of ales.
W. O.
Proper old pub with lovely atmosphere. Good staff and reasonable range of beer. Most IPAs but they have Guiness. Always go here when in Brighton.
J. C.
Incredible place to eat, great menu, kind staff and brilliant value for money.
Would thoroughly and highly recommend The Walrus to any local or visitor to the Brighton area.
P.
Didn't realise they had a third floor which doubles up as a roof garden as such.
Picnic benches and fresh air up there so served the purpose for a pre meal drink
K. B.
Lovely meal, including gluten free and vegetarian. Prices reasonable and food quality good. Quite a casual place but that added to it's charm.

Had dinner and visited the bars here tonight. Excellent venue; the food was amazing, the wine was delicious, great beers and the staff were the the best. 100% recommended!
L. K.
Fab food in a fab Victorian replica dining room! My partner and I had a lovely Saturday night dinner here. The staff were friendly and efficient, the food was great and well-priced and we loved the recreated Victorian dining room, where you could also talk without intrusive music. Great atmosphere of everyone enjoying themselves, but in a civilised fashion. Appealing to all ages too. We will definitely be back to sample Sunday lunch next - they even do a veggie roast! Amazing attention to detail in the design of The Walrus - even found William Morris wallpaper in the loos. Brighton as it should be.

Close to beach and Lanes. Good menu.

This pub is fantastic, from the outside looks like your very basic pub.. but the inside is a different story, it's like a maze with multiple floors.. the indoor/outdoor smoking area is just a cool place too.
A. D.
Lovely Pub! Really friendly staff! Everything was clear and easy to understand with the Covid regulations and rules that were in place. Love coming here!
S. d. L.
What a great pub! Staff were really friendly and helpful. The Roast Pork Belly with Crackling was excellent!
D.
Seemed a well run and popular pub. City centre location on several floors, food looked good. Friendly staff.
S. D.
£4.60 for a pint of Amstel. Absolutely lovely pub.
K. G.
I really like the walrus, has a funky Gentlemen’s club decor, lots of rooms and a large downstairs area for football. Does pizzas which are decent too. The beer is alright, with some local stuff usually on cask, like Dark Star or Gun.
A. C.
Lovely pub/restaurant. The terrace area on the top floor is beautiful and great in the summer. Can get very busy on big occasions but is huge and the food is great!
A. D.
Huge labyrinthine city center pub with an old style decor but modern vibe. Plenty of space and the rooftop 'garden' area is impressive but still a bit soulless and of course brighton prices. Have not tried the food.
D. P.
Love this pub, it's huge, has multiple levels including a conservatory. Nocked of 1 star as beer selection could be better.
G. B.
Great cosy pub good atmosphere good food nice staff and dig friendly
P. B.
Great place this, it's a cross between a pub, a TARDIS (srs, you would never believe from outside how big it is inside) and a rabbit warren. Quick, friendly service, real ale well kept, didn't try the food. Well hidden and HUGE dedicated sports bar, see if you can find it. ;)
E. R.
Fantastic roast dinners in lovely pub with friendly staff
H. B.
It's a nice atmosphere on a Sunday afternoon. I had a roast and the portions where just too big. That might seem a strange thing to complain about but I'm all about quality over quantity
A.
Skip the local Wetherspoons and visit The Walrus. Bartenders are gents and the quality of beer is great. Great looking restaurant and bar that's easy going and encourages relaxation. Classy establishment.
A. H.
Lovely pub. It’s super spacious yet super friendly at the same time. Amazing roasts, from meat to vegan. I will be going back!!
M. C.
Amazing night out.. loved the show and dinner, drinks were fairly reasonable.. toilets could do with more frequent checks to replenish toilet roll
P. W.
My wife and I decided to eat here on Thursday and take advantage of our Brighton Fringe membership. The Walrus offers meals at 2 for 1 on Monday to Thursday after 5pm for Brighton Fringe members. We were only allowed a discount of 25% so feel somewhat conned!
G. C.
Lovely pub with plenty of events on most evenings. Beautiful restaurant area upstairs, worth making a reservation. Hearty pub grub available.
M. U.
Enjoyed the place. Huge quantity of food. Very first time in my life I have not been able to eat everything. Very congenial atmosphere and lovely little cabbies.
J. M.
How does a good pub stand out? Well there are certain boxes to tick on everyone's list -anyone for dirty loos and a punch up, for instance?. And then there are a few my own private Idaho's. Mine revolve mainly around lighting, punter ambience, type and level and noise and beer, selection and quality thereof. This TARDIS like emporium sits between the elegant Lanes and the kiss me quick seafront and pretty much ticks them all, and in a good way too. There is a large ground floor bar, second floor restaurant and a bizarre third floor space for the smokers, where the rain comes down through the skylights and there is still a gallery above you to watch the stars from, should the weather permit. I am most definitely an eggman for this place. Go back to rock school if you don't get that reference..
C. B.
Visited using a Wriggle deal. Friendly and fast service, and the food is wonderful.
T. W.
Was very busy but had a drink. Staff were polite and attentive.
The food smelt amazing if I go back will defo book.
H. J.
We had a wonderful meal at the vegan supper club here. The food was beautifully presented, delicious and very reasonable. Lovely restaurant and service. Highly recommend!
P. M.
Super Sunday lunch, would recommend.
D.
Nice posh pub with restaurant upstairs serving lovely food. Tried the Christmas menu early and was lovely with generous servings.
Very nice friendly staff too.
N. G.
I can’t put into words how friendly the staff are here! They’re really helpful. The prices of drinks are on par with the rest of Brighton. I can’t comment on the food as I haven’t eaten there yet, but I’d be more than happy to!
C. A.
Good food, plenty of space in these strange times and the staff are great. Always a pleasure.
Z. C.
Really cool pub, with an amazing smoking area. If you can get here before it gets too busy then it's perfect for a weekend drink. Can be pretty expensive though depending on what you're drinking
B.
An amazing venue during quiet times with friendly staff. Fantastic food. Busy weekend nights can be difficult to get served.
P. M.
This place has everything. Food. Beer. Dancefloor. Restaurant. Private room. Lovely beer garden. I am always recommending it to my friends, worth a shot for everyone.
K. W.
Great pub. Nice atmosphere and nice staff.
C. P.
Lovely, lovely, lovely. Would definitely go again.
The roof top garden is beautiful. Need to try the food next time as it smells devine!
K. D.
One of my favorites in Brighton. So many different parts to it so there’s something for everyone. You can even enjoy their club late night if you are up for it. Have to check this place out!
C.
Really warm and welcoming vibe with some of the best food in Brighton. Possibly my favourite pub
C. S.
Great atmosphere and the staff is nice too
M. G.
So many floors and snugs to cosy up in! Nice drinks, great atmosphere and food will no doubt get better once they find their niche.
(That is the only reason I gave a 4 not a 5)
A. B.
Always very clean inside and a decent pint. Not tried the food but it looks good. Nice rooftop terrace.
J. C.
Great atmosphere, fabulous food and drinks, and all the staff were amazing. Couldn't have picked a better place for my brother's graduation meal, would definitely go back!
E. B.
First time here on Sunday, had gluten free fish and chips on Sunday with my sister, great atmosphere and service and gluten free ale on draught as well.
H. S.
Great pub, lovely staff and the rooftop is ideal!
D. S.
Quirky, huge pub with amazing rooftop garden space
R. F.
Staff fantastic food awesome and the atmosphere was buzzing it's a massive pub so plenty of places to sit and they they have open fires so was lovely and cosy
F. G.
The Walrus is definitely a lovely place. Oldschool Brits, love the vibe. Not too expansive and the people are very kindly. So if you are in Brighton you need to check it out
R. S.
The Lamb roast was full of flavours and a good portion size. Dining room space upstairs is nice.
N. G.
Great staff! Kyle and Shaq were really helpful (we're new to the area!) We had a great time and will return! :)
J. B.
A nice pub with nice beer, the food looked terrific bit didn't get a chance to try some
R. L.
Pleasant, welcoming and helpful staff.
N. S.
Great service, great food!
S. D.
A bit disappointed. My partner had a lovely meat dish but my vegetarian roast pumpkin was just a huge lump of mash and gravy. Tasted ok but uninspiring.
M. M.
Lots of fun. Big happy space.

We used 'The Underbelly' function room at 'The Walrus' pub for a special 'Book Into Film' event organised for the U3A Film Group on Tuesday 31st August. The afternoon event was a great success, in large part due to the attention and helpfulness of the staff at 'The Walrus'. A good number of us had lunch at 'The Walrus' before the event started at 2 pm. I thought that the food I had was very good and this was the same judgement of my friends and colleagues. 'The Underbelly' was a perfect venue for our event, which was a film screening followed by a discussion in groups. Fifty-five people attended the event and the large, attractive space of 'The Underbelly' proved to be an ideal venue for our purpose. We hope to repeat our positive experience of 'The Walrus' in the near future.
J. T.
Top class venue, most accommodating for parties and group events plus a fabulous atmosphere for a wonderful night out. Excellent food and ambience. .. all round 5 star!!!
C. P.
Impressively large pub and restaurant with multiple areas for drinking/food and an best two-floor outdoor area that feels like being indoors. Nice atmosphere, cosy and well presented.
A.
Very cosy, great for a rainy day in. Just a pity about the food service. We keep trying to see if they improve but the food is average for the price and it's always a fuss.
L. G.
Came here for our work Christmas meal. Loved the venue. Food was good. Attentive staff. Everyone had a great time. Thank you.
S. B.
My sons have always taken me here for my birthdays but it was a first time for an Xmas lunch. Lovely place with lots of character and the food & service is first class

Fantastic, cavernous traditional-ish-feeling pub. Great staff, fantastic food in both the bar and restaurant, and a yorkshire pudding to die for.

One of the best roasts in town and a lovely setting to have it in.

Great drinks, great atmosphere, cool decor and the inside roof space is something else.

Amazing food great service Genevieve our waitress was the perfect host. Beautiful large pub with lots of character.
D. M.
Lovely roof top garden and terrace
T. F.
Seemed very dark inside. Didn't try any food but the beer was alright. There are better pubs in a short walking distance.
P. M.
Nice decor, good atmosphere, friendly doorstaff, but the DJ was amazing, a fantastic blend of 70/80/90's pop/funk and soul.
A. W.
❤
M. F. L.
Good organisation. At least they tried to find space for us on a busy night. Sat on a chilly roof terrace. Good fun
J. B. (.
Nice bar, smoking floors / levels upstairs, disco downstairs. Good prices, amazing atmosphere. Can strongly recommend.
J. M.
Excellent Sunday roast - it’s rare that lunch defeats me, but the portion sizes here are huge! Delicious food, and great value.
m. m.
Food could be much better. Pretentious and decidedly average. Small portions for the cost as well. Rest of the pub is ok though. Interesting upstairs.
H. O. C.
Food was amazing. Service at the bar could be a bit more professional plus more reasonable. But I will defo. Come back.
J.
nice outdoors area and quirky place. I did find the music was very loud but hard to here what was actually playing. service was good
M. A.
I've been here for lunch, parties and to pop in for a quick pint and never fails to disappoint. Stunning interior and dining areas.

Atmospheric. Like the idea of their gluten free fish and chips

Nice looking place and very busy.
Disappointed on their vegan options as they are very limited and not very tasty. Would be hesitant to visit them again.
J. D.
Never eaten here but a quirky pub restaurant where every floor offers something different including the top floor that is open to the elements making it airy and sunny on a warm afternoon.
G. S. M.
First time here on the roof terrace. Loved the place and food was amazing.
