Reviews of Chequers Inn, Hanham
C. G. M. (.
We had an amazing time while visiting Chequers Inn, Hanham during a Sunday for some Sunday Roast.
Everything tasted good and staff were extremely kind. 🐕 Dogs everywhere, lot’s of green area and positive vibes.
My favourite was the sticky pudding at the end (it always is) 🤤
Definitely recommend you to visit!

After our last visit was tarnished by a very busy restaurant- We revisited this evening 26/08, I can honestly say we had an amazing fish and chips and ham egg and chips with delicious desserts. Ben looked after us from the minute we walked in, it was how I always remember our previous visits before the Sunday blip. The music was playing outside its a great place for an evening meal and chill out Thank you 👍🏼
PREVIOUS REVIEW
After our visit today we won’t be returning- the worst roast I’ve ever had, standard has definitely gone downhill since are last visit. Considering the prices they charge, £5.50 for a cauliflower cheese which was tasteless and the meat on the roast was something you’d purchase from Iceland not happy at all over £110 spent on terrible food - we understand the wait as very busy and the waitress was lovely

Lovely spot by the river for a Sunday roast. We were surprised to get a table. Perfect after a long stroll! Staff were very accommodating and service was good despite the place being busy. Nice food and a good range of options to choose from 👍
A. B.
Summer terrace with good restaurant right on the river, simple classic dishes and a few good vegetarian options. Parking available nearby. Service was great and the people are friendly but it took long for the drinks and the food to arrive. Waiting time was about 45 min… however, the food was fresh and delicious. We had cauliflower steak with salsa verde, heritage beetroot salad and a burger. All great! A bit pricy but you are paying extra for the location.. Good selection of beers and ciders!
The place can also be accessed by cycling along the river bank which is fantastic.
B. M.
Fantastically situated pub/restaurant alongside the river with the most gorgeous views overlooking the forestry behind, the staff have gone to great lengths in making the outdoor seating area just perfect with ambient lighting and a marquee. The staff are always lovely and genuinely friendly and chatty. The indoor seating area is rustic with a lovely wood fire for the winter months. It also attracts a very diverse crowd and not just locals. Food is of a high quality (my only minor criticism is the limited variety of vegan food) other than that - this place is quality.

Food has definitely uped its game since I last been here. I would have given a 5 star but unfortunately I got a hair on my food, I would still recommend coming here as the food was amazing, I can't let a minor slip let this place down,
Customer service is great
Food is great
Location is great especially when the sun's out,

We visited yesterday after a day of swimming and sitting in the sun. We didn't think we'd get a table and a roast at 7pm! But we got both and the food was delicious. Happy staff too and good management observed :) was the perfect end to a perfect day!
L. H.
Good food. £16-19 for a Sunday roast, so fittingly premium for a riverside pub. Big plate, small food. Roast could have done with some more veg. Will try the old lock and Weir next time to compare.

Went for dinner as a group of 3 on a Thursday evening. The staff were lovely and didn't push us to order quickly. They were attentive and took extra care with someone's nut allergy, removing pesto from the starter and checking the label of the hot chocolate and consulting with us to check that everything would be safe to eat.
A. B.
A quick Google for the best roast in Bristol highlighted.... as a must try. So I did and this is what I found
Location
It's on the outskirts of the city, well to be accurate around a 2 hour walk. We walked it after a heavy Sunday morning breakfast and because its majority alongside the river we really enjoyed the walk! Would reccomend this as on a nice day. As we approached we could see that there is a beer garden directly on the river and the carpark is ample for the pub size. I cannot imagine that getting here is difficult by car and it is very picturesque!
Interior
It's a lovely pub, it's got some nice stuff on the walls and counters to keep your eyes busy. Standard mix match of furniture making each table special and super clean throughout. Toilets were very nice (the hand soap smelt lovely haha). Our table was a bit wobbly so had to put a napkin under one of the legs and it was directly next to the window and in the sun, it was incredibly hot, not really something they can help but it did make it slightly uncomfortable
Service
No complaints with the service, we were warmly welcomed and shown to our table, before drinks orders and mains. The food arrived quickly and the team were able to answer questions about what some of it was (mashed celeriac) as well as getting this northerner another pot of gravy! The only slight complaint I could have was that getting the bill was quite painful, but they were super busy focusing on getting the roasts out.
Food/drink
Let's start with a huge issue, the drinks tap was broken so no draught soft drink on a super hot day... such a let down... completely our of their control but it did ruin the experience somewhat.
We had the:
[ ] Lemon and time half roast chicken - absolutely beautiful, really juicy and a good amount of seasoning on the skin
[ ] Pork and sage stuffing - been a whole since I had stuffing, absolutely loved this, a good amount of meat in it
[ ] Garlic & thyme roast potatoes - these were massive, almost too big perhaps as they were a little bit crunchy inside. Beautifully crisp on the outside but I prefer a bit of a cloud inside and these were still a little hard.
[ ] Roasted carrot and spring greens - pretty standard, the carrot was half a carrot roasted so it had a good sweetness, for me these were staple additions to the plate
[ ] Celeriac puree - WHAT IS THIS AND HOW DO I GET MORE? Oh my I remember a friend at uni ate this stuff and it never tasted great however this was the highlight of the plate. Loads of flavour, really smooth and just bloody fantastic, ***googles how to make it at home!
[ ] Yorkshire pudding and gravy - I am from Yorkshire so I simply have to rate these, especially when the gravy was 50% chicken fat and the Yorkshire was massive. Top job!
Price
Toby Carvery - £11.99
Chequers Inn - £15
That's all I am saying here, would you pay 25% more for a meal that is simply 300% better?
Overall
Google smashed it here, the reccomendation was spot on! Have not enjoyed a roast as much as I did this for quite a while. I just wish the drinks had been working and the sun hadn't been so hot burning my face through the window.
L. S.
Beautiful setting on the river. Staff very friendly unfortunately the sandwiches were very under par. We ordered 3 sandwiches which basically was stale. We appreciate that artisan bread was used and after bringing this up with the young waiter was advised that these are so say toasted although no colour whatsoever. Only the centre of the sandwich was edible. We had to leave the crust unless we wanted to visit the dentist. Also lacking filling. At £10 I think they could be a little more generous. The other food coming out of the kitchen did look good but sandwiches need a rethink!
G. C.
The service from Ben and the team was excellent. Genuine, thoughtful and professional. What a wonderful pub with great food. Brilliant all round. Thanks very much.
V. H.
Lovely pub, plenty of seats, didn't feel crowded, excellent customer service, exceptional food
G. L.
Gorgeous spot by the river with plenty of seating. The young staff are very friendly and customer focused. The food is good and nicely presented. At busier times there is always a staff member at an outdoor service area near the seating area which is very helpful. Had to mark down one star as we were given 2 out of date bottles of diet coke. When we asked for a replacement there were no bottles in date so perhaps a little refining of the stock taking process would be a good idea. But all in all a fantastic place to unwind by the river and beats it's neighbour the Lock and Weir hands down on customer service.
J. G.
We came here for a Sunday roast, it was a pretty average meal considering the prices. We had a non-existent welcome from the guy on the laptop at the front. I don't expect a lot but at least a 'hello' would have sufficed.
On the other hand we had a young guy serving us who was probably the most friendly, polite and attentive server I've had in a long time. Keep up the good work pal, we need more people like you in the hospitality industry!
T. J.
Really nice spot, good service, and an interesting menu. Have not visited for a long time but will be back
R. R.
Very pleased with the Chequers Inn. They hosted a lunch for my parents' diamond wedding anniversary. The staff were helpful and polite, we had a great table and the pre-ordered food arrived promptly and was well presented. I had chicken which was outstanding though the ham and chips was reported as more ordinary. The ploughman's platter was inventive and tasty, the fish and chips generously portioned.
We used the Bristol Packet cruise from the city docks to make a wonderful day. Thank you Chequers!
B. H.
Visit to Bristol to see my sister. Sunday drive we went for lunch here. Busy spot table booked earlier we were told it could be a an hour before we would be served granted very busy so we had a drink while we waited and shortly after around 15 minutes our meal arrived all three dishes were excellent and service very efficient. I hope my next visit will bring me back to this restaurant. Well worth a visit.
A. H.
The location and atmosphere is undoubtedly wonderful (located just on the river), but the food was a bit of a disappointment unfortunately.
We had Sunday roast (with baked camambert for starter) and I think the only person who enjoyed the roast was the one who ordered beef. The roasties were really underdone, the vegetables were tasteless and the gravy was super thin.
They might just have been having a busy day in the kitchen though to be fair as generally there seem to be good reviews.
I have to mention that the waiter who served us was absolutely brilliant - super friendly and conscientious.
C. E.
Beautiful location on the river. I’ve been here several times and the food and service is always spot on! Good selection on menu.
Good size car park and plenty of seating inside & out.
T. T.
Such a beautiful, stunning and picturesque setting and holds many memories and meaningful thoughts and feelings. R.I.P Danny we hope you’re enjoying the next chapter of journey in the spirit realm. It was the most perfect place to send you on your maiden voyage of the next chapter for you. Travelling down the waterways through Bristol, the city you loved so much ❤️🌈🥰💔
g. b.
A beautiful pub and restaurant in lovely surroundings , the food is good but a little expensive but give it a visit though , especially on a sunny day
T. S.
Wonderful setting, lovely food and fabulous weather was a bonus. The staff were incredible too. So helpful, polite and efficient. What more could you want. 5 stars!
V. C.
The pub and outside was great.
The Sunday lunch was shocking
It was not cheap by any means .
The food was Delivered to the table but we had to wait ages for knife & fork .
The meals were not that great.
I don't moan about food or service. But this was very poor .sorry to say .
I.
Always been a great pub but it’s at its best now , lovely location and a great menu , very helpful
And accommodating staff tons of parking , also dog friendly which is great as lots of good walks nearby
L. M. S.
Beautiful location pub overlooking the river with panoramic seating inside and seating outside.
We've sat to have a couple of pints but have not tried the food. Worth the journey for the location.
P. D.
Great food and friendly staff, was a delight in the hot weather
P. M.
Lovely place, great food, well organised. Loved it, eating outside in the sunshine with drinks arriving merely seconds after being ordered via the app was superb. Great staff, will be back.
N. D.
Lovely little pub, great on a sunny afternoon sat by the canal. App wasn’t really working but you could order from the outside area and the drinks brought to the table. Serves neck oil too
M. P.
Great pub and location. Lovely place to walk to down the river, but if you are driving there is a car park, though be prepared for a steep and narrow road for the final entrance
D. W.
Lovely spot by the river. Very nice roast but yorkshire pud was cold.Service good if a little slow. Drinks didn't arrive with food.
T. L.
So so great. What a lovely place by the water. Food was so delicious, pudding as well. Staff very friendly and nice. It was a great experience, we are very pleased to have found this place. Lovely outdoor sitting in the sun. Will definitely come back.
T. T.
Beautiful place so peaceful and relaxing love it
J. S.
Decent. My daughter works there. Staff are friendly and food is very nice. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. QUALITY!
F. t.
Came with the family on Sunday lovely lunch and special mention to the blonde haired girl who served us, nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be back.
J. D.
Good value food and staff very friendly and helpful. They allow dogs in the bar area which is an added bonus!
T. P.
A very pleasant lunchtime visit. Good beer and tasty munchies. Friendly and helpful staff
J. W.
Decent food and great location. You need the app to order swiftly, and the pub next door has loud music, otherwise I would have given 4 stars.
D. G.
My first time was on a Thursday night for my friends brithday. I was welcomed by Carmima and Amy who provided good service and very friendly. Amy recommended good choices of dishes to eat and even said to come back and try the Sunday roast which we late did. The food was excellent and many thanks to Nick for his great hospitality.
H. D.
Great location and pretty good food,
Most staff friendly but don’t expect to have your plates cleared or be offered a dessert before kitchen closes.
J. G.
Really pleasant pub. It was raining when we went but nice weather would certainly add to the nice view.
The two starters to go for are the pork belly bites and camembert (sharer). Mains I would recommend are the ribs, cajun chicken and burger. However I'd probably pass on dessert as everyone in our party either had the fudge sundae or eton mess. Whilst nice it came in a wine glass and for £6.50 that just doesn't compare to the absolute beastly sundaes of other pubs for less money as well.
All in all I'd recommend, especially in the summer, 5/5
J. M.
It was a very nice pub and the staff was really nice! It is a lovely area and the views out the windows are beautiful! The food is great and delicious! They are also decent portions too. The only thing that I wasn’t a big fan off was how dogs were aloud inside and some were very loud and interrupting. But everything else was great! You should definitely try it out…
A. S.
We had a really lovely Sunday lunch here. It's a great spot, especially in nice weather (as it was today). The food was tasty. And the staff were warm & patient. There was a bit of delay for both of our courses, but it didn't detract from the experience as it was really busy, and they were suitably apologetic.
J. O.
Lovely location. It was busy, so we just had a coffee. Will be back again.
L. B.
Always eat here when visiting my grandma who lives close by. The food is fantastic and you have a great view while you eat. The staff have always been extra friendly and as it’s a dog-friendly pub you can get lucky and make some new four-legged friends too! Parking is never an issue and it’s in a lovely location (my grandma is 98 so we can’t walk far but we often wander the 30m to the river to see the boats and ducks).
Personal recommendations have to be the burger followed by the sticky toffee pud. The burger is consistently delicious - one of the best around!!!!
S. L.
I loved this place for a midweek catch up with family in bristol. The food was great and service very good. It was quiet when we were there, just before busy evening period. But I believe it can get very busy. Lovely walks along the river.
J. H.
Nice terrace next to the river, the pub has two terraces, the one closest to the river is for non-smokers. The food is good and the price quality too
H. m.
Went on a spontaneous trip here on a saturday for some lunch, food was great, more on the higher end. However, you are paying for the view of which there are tonnes of places to seat and enjoy.
There were many indoor and outdoor seating areas available even on a busy, saturday afternoon. Staff were friendly and were many of them
Parking is free and has plenty of spaces to accommodate for. Would recommend as a pace to go.
h. n.
Beautiful pub sat on the river bank with superb food & a wide range of drinks
S. J.
Went for the first time today. Lovely decor and friendly staff. Service could be a bit quicker considering it was a quiet evening. Good was outstanding and generally quite good value for money. Ample parking. In the summer there's a lovely outside area overlooking the river.
L. D.
Beautiful location, loads of indoor and outdoor seating. Super busy pub though, so there is a weight but it's worth it as the food is amazing.
S. H.
Perfect "rehydration" point during a dog walk along the Avon. It's scenic, dog friendly and has a good selection of drinks.
N. P.
Tasty food, lovely setting - it's a bit strange that you have to decide on tips before getting served though. I'd rather tip based on the service I received.
M. T.
Fantastic service as always at the Chequers Inn. Food never disappoints, a credit to the chefs. It's a very inviting and well run pub !
B. C.
Lovely spot. Wonderful views out over the water, and I highly recommend the (posh) fish finger sandwich.
C. E.
Lovely pub on river lots of seating areas.food not sure was expensive bit back.
K. B.
Stopped in something to eat the food was lovely. Good service very pleasant outlook. A good experience will go back again!
m. e.
Fantastic location and ample outdoor seating, I'd advise arriving early as parking can be a challenge.
B. H.
Nice spot during the week if you want a quiet cosy meal
H. J.
Very cosy and rustic. Love sitting by the fire for a winters evening dinner, or by the water front on a sunny summers day. The roasts here really are one of the best in Bristol. Can't fault it. The wine menu is great, food menu is also great, and we've always had incredible service, especially from Harvey. He always goes above and beyond and is a pleasure to speak to on every visit. Very lucky to have this pub as our local! 🙂
R. M.
Lovely service if a little erratic. A good Sunday Beef, tasty veg and gravy, delicious Yorkshire but the potatoes were not up to scratch. Great atmosphere and child and dog friendly, definitely recommend.
C. N.
We've been here before but not for about 4 years for a roast. This Sunday roast was amazing! We all had something different; roast beef, vegan roast and pork belly. Big portions and the quality was fabulous...the belly pork and crackling were perfect! Topped off with a sticky toffee pudding and coffee which were both great!
We added a note that we'd be bringing our large dog and they picked a table for us with enough space for our pup to sleep.
Ben was our waiter and he was really friendly, happy and made our lunch all the more enjoyable.
The only thing I can recommend improving is the booking system on their site. It provides available dates but won't accept the booking when you choose how long you want the table for. I booked through google in the end.
L. L.
Bit of a pain to get to, based on street signage alone you'll never find this place. Having said that the scenery along the river is almost off a postcard. Plenty of seating inside and out, and they even have an elevator if you require one.
Great food decent options for all, lots of fish and vegetarian (possibly vegan) dishes too and all well presented. Peppercorn sauce could've done with a bit more of a kick and maybe a lighter protein option between red meat and fish, but that's personal preference. Good service, attentive enough and willing, bit of a wait for cocktails; longer than you'd expect.
K. M.
Lovely place to end a long river walk by.
Comfortable with good atmosphere but gets super busy at the weekend and I'd suggest booking a table if you didn't want to miss out. Didn't have food there for a while now but it used to be great.
Keep your eyes peeled for a charming and charismatic young staff member ;)
Quite challenging to find if you have never been there before , even with sat nav, you wonder if you are going in the right direction but keep going- ill be worth it
A. M.
The Christmas meal we had was exeptional. We had a vegetarian and vegan in our party and they were very well looked after. The meals were beautifully cooked. Plenty of different vegetables. Nice to escape the usual carrots and peas. The service was very good too. Highly recommend this venue. We are already talking about booking again next year.
d. b.
Friendly staff and great location.
Food not so good, our cod was full of bones and tasteless, way over priced.
Just had some cod fillets in bread crumbs from a well known supermarket, so much better. Come on Chequers shape up.
You have a great location with plenty of parking, just need to concentrate on your food.
T. C.
Friendly staff, great location and really good food. I had the fish and chips and the fish was tremendous. Had apple crumble as well which was also very nice.
r. p.
Great pub. Loved sitting outside but inside is really nice and quirky.
Only slight disappointment was the Cod in the Cod and chips, whilst being large was obviously frozen and not much fish in the batter.
D. D.
Great food, great atmosphere, great location. Staff were brilliant. The young man serving us was lovely, polite and incredibly helpful. Dog friendly as well. Will return
n. m.
We've been here several times and always had a good experience and good food (quite pricey though). But today we went on a sunny Sunday at lunchtime so they were understandable busy, but we waited over an hour for food without any warning and while others who arrived later receiver their meals before we did. When we enquired when our food would arrive, it turned out our order had got lost by the kitchen. The staff apologised several times but not a single offer to take anything of the bill or any free drinks etc which was very disappointing. We had two kids with us, who had to entertain themselves for all this time while getting increasingly hungry - not a great experience at all so the three stars are based on taking past experiences in account, which have always been very good and the setting is lovely.
A. Y.
The location is fantastic, right next to Hanham Lock at the end of the K&A Canal. As for the pub itself, it's large, family friendly and has been tastefully decorated. We both chose the roast dinner as it was a Sunday, and the service at the beginning was excellent. The roast was OK but not the best ever (cabbage and leeks were practically raw!) but the vegan Wellington was really good. After this, the service went downhill (a shift change?) and we had to flag waiting staff down to take our dessert order and then again for the bill. Would definitely go back, however overall this particular visit was fair and nothing special.
S. G.
Pricey but beautiful location with good atmosphere. Always worth a visit.
L. H.
Service excellent, great atmosphere and a lovely location. The 'lane' leading to the premises is narrow, there are pull-in places, large car park.
T. M.
Always have a good experience here and it's in a fantastic setting with great views of the river
V. H.
A very nice, out of town, place nice location. For a lunch snack it was a quite pricey but food was ok. The biggest disappointment was the ladies was out of order and the disabled toilet was only usable if desperate as the seat was on the floor and floor was wet.
D. G.
Great place, lovely food and great staff. Nice location on the river. Will definitely return.
s. f.
Professional friendly service, beautifully decorated pub with lovely surroundings and delicious food. 😋
L. W.
We went to Chequers Inn for the first time today and it felt like the first weekend of spring. A beautiful spot near the Avon Valley River. We didn't have a booking but they luckily found us a sunny spot in the sun. Friendly staff but sadly the food didn't live up to expectations. We ordered 1x beef roast £18, 1x vegan wellington £14.50?, 1x cauliflower cheese £4.50. The Wellington pastry was soggy not flaky, the cauliflower cheese was more like watery milk than cheese sauce. The roast potatoes weren't crunchy. The beef was ok. Overall, underwhelming and over priced unfortunately. We'll stop for just drinks next time.
W. M.
Beautiful location. Cosy inside. Good pub food
J. R.
Friendly staff, even on a busy Sunday food came out quickly. Whole menu great, decent portions. And a lovely setting by the river
G. S.
Excellent setting overlooking the River Avon.
Food was top quality too.
l. C.
Lovely food and generous serving.Recommend highly 😊
J. B.
Good substantial Sunday lunch. Plenty of outdoor seating to use on a summer day.
S. T.
Good beer and great location,
Didn't eat here but it looked good
T. M.
Nice venue, accessible by water too. Good food, slightly more expensive than fair
J. P.
Ive came here a few times now and i have really enjoyed myself both times do really lovely food and its over looking the river which i can imagine is lovely in the summer it doez seem verry 'posh'when you first arrive but the staff were lovely and the food isnt badly priced and if you arnt a big eater you can get a lighter bite which is under 10 pounds the deserts are also amazing. Will definitely go again.
M. B.
Set in a winning location at Hanham Lock on the River Avon this is a very pleasant hostelry. Modern but atmospheric interior with great views out over the river traffic, this is a great place to relax whilst other folks are messing about in boats. Good menu and well kept Young's ales. Friendly staff make this a place to set sail to. (If you can find it!) Ample parking at end of very narrow lane. Suspect busy at weekends, particularly in the summer. Booking advised.
I. J.
A Youngs establishment so you know the bitter is going to be good. Other beers are available 😊 Good menu and food excellent. The day we visited was sunny and warm so sat outside in their extensive seating area by the river. Get there early as they become busy quite quickly.
L. F.
Welcoming staff & dog friendly even bought my dog her bowl of water to the table. Lunch I had sandwiches I was given a choice of various bread from normal white, granary to sourdough also came with chips. I was sat at a table inside which had a view of the river Avon there are also tables outside.
f. -.
Lovely meal by the river highly recommended the duck leg, we will be back!
s. e.
Lovely place to meet up in the summer by the water, plenty of outdoor seating.
J.
Very nice food and drinks :) lovely views when sitting outside too!
L. E.
Really nice food, and good atmosphere.
m. d.
Dank soggy wet day but the food was great top marks. Sausages were of very good quality and the pie also very good. Great to have root mash or smashed new potatoes for a change.
Highly recommend.
M. P.
Food was good and lovely sat outside in the sun. Service was nice and quick from ordering to being at the table
f. f.
Lovely place. Food was good for the price and they let the dog in so five stars all the way.
R. H.
Lovely setting by the river. Food was great. Can recommend the chicken and ham pie. Decent selection of beers including 3 real ales. Priced at what you'd expect for a pub such as this. Only slight issue was had to ask twice to get a bottle of water.
H. P.
Great location, especially when the sun is out. Food is good but not great.
L. K.
The food was gorgeous, i ordered a pulled pork bun and it was lovely . The staff are very nice and welcoming , and it has seating with a beautiful view of river Avon .
K.
A lovely place to visit for great food, with great service and a lovely outlook along a river
F. T.
Absolutely delicious fish and samphire.
I'd recommend the honeycomb, coconut ice cream & maple seared pineapple dessert.
My husband had the fish and chips which he enjoyed too.
Very attentive staff too and lovely surroundings with a great view of the river 😀
T. B.
Excellent food, beautiful location beside the canal. Recommended ++
P. C.
This was a nice experience. We ate outside on a very hot day and, despite being very busy, they served us cold drinks quicky after ordering. Ordering was through an app and the food arrived also in a timely manner. I enjoyed my meal and would go back. Staff weren't especially generous on customer service but they were exceptionally busy and I don't usually go for the whole 'is your meal ok?' sort of thing. There wasn't really enough shade though, and I didn't like their chips much.
T.
Great pub in a lovely location. Have visited twice now, once in summer where I sat outside and once recently where we sat in the pub. The food is lovely, and staff are really friendly! Also dog friendly! 🐾🥰
D. P.
Great location, good food and friendly staff! In the summer, the outside space is beautiful and very romantic.
B. R.
Friendly staff. Lovely outdoor area. Truly amazing chips... Oh my god, the chips... They were seriously good. All the food was very nice. Quick service. Easy location to get to by car, walking or on a bike. Spot on.
F. C.
Lovely pub. Perfect on a winter night. Great service and delicious food. Recommend a visit!!

What a great setting! The staff were very friendly and the burger was probably one of the best I've ever had. Will definitely be returning!
H. M.
Chequers is in such a lovely spot and the pub is designed to make the most of it. We had a lush spot overlooking the river for dinner - such a treat. Food was good and the staff were lovely. Only 4 stars because the ordering app was very temperamental - only worked on one phone out of 3 and even then wouldn't submit our food order. Staff were very helpful in sorting but unfortunately it was frustrating. Will be back anyway - I'd have called it 4.5 if I could :)

Ok for meat lovers ..not so good for those who aren't ...my belly pork was fantastic and plentiful same for my son in laws turkey ... although the roasties lacked crunch and the cauli cheese was extra and a whopping price too making the whole thing hefty on the wallet . The vegetarian Wellington was the only option for my daughter and partner and left a lot to be desired it looked unappetising and was notably smaller and was ...according to them ... tasteless ...my meat version was crowned by a huge Yorkshire pudding.... noticeably absent from the vegetarian option ... It's not rocket science to make a decent nut roast with good veg gravy and I expect something better at the price point .... Good pint of thatchers .. great location for a riverside pint ...but I'll eat elsewhere in future ...mediocre ...

I had fish and chips. It was amazing! The staff were really pleasant and helpful. Especially the younger staff, which were a credit to the pub!
It was very well organised and we had to wait a very short time for the drinks and the food. Toilets were spotless.
You download the Youngs at Tap app to order at tour table. Would highly recommend.
R. F.
I love the chequers in and go whenever I can, food is usually fantastic and a beautiful setting.
I was however massively disappointed with my dessert on my last visit.
I ordered the Eton Mess and was presented with a tiny bowl...with a Couple of strawberries, 2 tiny bits of meringue, what tasted like strawberry jam and a bit of sorbet..for £6! It was nothing like the photos that come up on Google...I will be having cheesecake next time!
L. D.
Certainly different from when I was a kid and used to visit . The play area has now gone. But the view on the canal makes up for this. The pub is relaxing and a chill vibe .
P.
Probably over priced for did quality and portion size but it's really nice place to spend a couple of hours!
M. T.
Great atmosphere, lovely little place down by the river. Tasty food & really friendly staff
A. M.
Booked table for Sunday lunch. Three veggie meals and one chicken roast dinner ordered. All meals had some roast potatoes that were undercooked and hard. We told the staff, and about 10 minutes later some additional potatoes were brought to us. Some of the replacement potatoes were undercooked. Service was good and the staff are polite and helpful.
t. b.
The food and service was excellent & great views 😁
J. H.
Beautiful view, nice atmosphere, plenty of room, perfect for any occasion. Had the pork roast, imagined for the price there would be more on the plate ofcourse but there really was a range of complimenting veg along with, all delicious!
N. T.
Absolutely delicious. The staff were welcoming and friendly and the food was amazing. My mum and boyfriend had the beef stew with dumplings and I had the fish and chips. We eat out quite frequently and I can honestly say that these meals were some of the best we have ever had! We will definitely be back.
J. #.
Had a roast here, food is delicious, the staff are very welcoming and friendly. Great views, can't fault the place
s. !.
Ordered chips with cheese and wasn't warned when brought to table the dish was piping hot and burnt my partners fingers as passed to children !
J. M.
Had a fab meal last night (fish pie). The surroundings were lovely, very cozy and staff were attentive. Such a shame that the pub was so empty!! It felt very covid safe there. Hope business picks up for them soon.
m. p.
Good food, nice setting fairly good value. Will be back.
W. Z.
Good food and drink, stop here on my march for the month in September,
J. G.
Have worked hard to add significant number of tables outside. Using Young's app to book a table and food/drink works well. Staff are friendly and efficient. Lovely location by river and pub has fairly recently been refurbished. A favourite!
L. K.
Nice food, great location and friendly service
A. H.
Very good burger and kid's roast, nice retro/modern decor
j. y.
Setting was beautiful.Staff very friendly and helpful.Food overpriced.
T. A.
Everything was mostly excellent. The only small problem was with my mums salad, it was supposed to have pommegranite and pumpkin seeds and came with neither. We weren't told about this before hand which was slightly frustrating, I would have left a 5 star review otherwise. The staff and waitresses were lovely.
A. S.
Clean beautiful and lovely staff didn't eat so can't comment on food
I. S.
Very nice place and good food.
L. S.
I ate lunch here today in November sunshine. The food was exceptional. I loved every item on my plate. Absolutely delicious. Thanks.
G. R.
Beer was cold, food was hot and staff were nice.
I had the flat iron steak off the lunch menu, came slightly overdone (as did my companion's) but still very tasty.
Bill was reasonable but desserts were probably a bit on the pricy side considering what we got.
N. W.
Starters were tasty and looked nice. The main was lovely I had the belly of pork would have again really lovely my wife had the fish and chips which see enjoyed this but the triple cook chips no so much I say cook chips once and do it right.
Dessert she had a cointreau ice cream which she liked I had the rum Yule log no taste of rum and i felt very over priced for a bit of cake would not have dessert again.but overall a nice meal in nice surroundings.
C. G.
Love it here. Sunny aspect, fabulous views of the canal, beautifully furnished and characterful, super real ale and the food is good too. We take our dogs after their walk and my daughter's young baby - both are made very welcome by the staff. Lovely.
k. r.
Food was lovely, our server Harvey was really nice and nothing was any trouble. Thank you for making mothers day a pleasant experience
C. M.
Fabulous place. After a walk along the canal and getting caught in the rain we were welcomed in soaking wet with our two golden retrievers...also soaked! We made our way to the snug where we had a quiet corner to enjoy a pint and superb food. Nothing was too much trouble. Gorgeous location. Plenty of outside seating beside the river.
A.
Food was good, and the location is brilliant in the summer, easy parking and great for walks. Downside- was app order only, bad for people who can't use a smartphone, and the food didn't reflect the high prices.
A. P.
Friendly staff, quick service, mother in law was not too impressed as more fat then pork for her roast, veg, pots & Yorkshire pudding cooked nice. Husband & myself happy with food, father in law not happy with chicory mixed in with veg spoilt his chicken roast, only ate chicken and pots.
M. L.
Actually I was expecting something better. They do have a good choice of beers with local ales and ciders including but the food didn't blow my mind up. First biggest problem is waiting time. I understand that you have to wait for a good meal but if you order a starter it should be served sooner than the main course as it is a STARTER. After over half an hour of waiting we've received our orders. Unfortunately at the same time shrimps as a starter and the main course. As we wanted to eat our food hot, we had to leave the starter on a side and keep chasing the flies off it. It was pretty uncomfortable and really annoying. Second the beef wasn't as I usually eat at carvery. Was rather gummy and definitely it wasn't tender. Of course this is only my personal opinion and someone else could be delighted. Anyway I'm not sure if I dine here again.
R. A.
I've enjoyed a lot with my friend at Avon river side
C. J.
Very nice place. Expensive on the drinks though. But nice for what it is. Very quiet and not that busy in winter. Summer though its usually very busy.
P.
Ordered drinks on a beautiful sunny Saturday down by the river, arrived within 5 minutes, no queuing just download pub app, ordered chips and courgettes in tampura batter also arrived within 5 minutes. Sat with Doug and soon enjoying the day, magic.
B. N.
One of the best interiors of a pub that I've ever seen. Smashing place on a dark night, yet in the height of summer it's right next to the river. Not a massively diverse selection of beers, but some excellent bitters from Young's. Menu looked expensive - I didn't try the food so I can't comment on whether it was value for money or not, but not the place to come if you want a cheap meal.
T. M.
Amazing place. It's organised so that dogs welcome in one section, a quieter section & another for families. There's a lift for wheelchairs & good parking. It's close to a river, so has lovely views from large windows. Chequers is on Facebook & r now considering opening earlier in day for brunches & coffee. Apparently their sausage rolls are large & scotch eggs are amazing!
R. C.
The food was really tasty with good portion sizes. There is a lovely view of the river from within a warm, clean and comfortable modern/traditional building. The food is great value for money and the bar was stocked with a brilliant range of beers, ciders and soft drinks.
C. C.
Had a lovely Sunday lunch - I had the roast pork with an extra helping of really delicious cauliflower cheese, yum! The food was really tasty, the staff very helpful and friendly and the perfect spot to stop off after a lovely walk. Able to book for 15 people on a Sunday which was really useful.
J. D.
Went Saturday night and place was virtually empty.
Nice position and atmosphere and the service was excellent however it was badly let down by choice of food and the prices.
The menu is extremely limited - once the salads had been excluded form the offer we were left with Fish and Chips, Ham and Chips and Chicken Pie. There was a steak option but at £20 it wasn't in the running.
Our group of three wasn't really keen on any of these choices to be honest as it was really just basic pub food, and I didn't make the effort to drive just to be offered xx plus chips.
And the prices were ridiculous too - £14.50 for a Chicken and Leek pie with a bit of mash and some bog standard frozen peas with watery gravy mix!!!
Similarly the Fish and Chips were ridiculously priced at £13.50 for a standard pub dish. Same for the starters - £8.00 for Duck Croquettes which were pretty basic.
Yes the food was nice but no nicer than bog standard pub food costing a lot less.
It was clear why the place was empty - they need to up their offer and adjust the pricing otherwise people will vote with their feet.
We visited because my daughter had been there some time ago and was impressed - she wont be returning again.
L. W.
Had a super birthday lunch here yesterday. The roasts were huge and excellent quality. I had three roasts in various places in a weekend and this one was the best. Reasonably priced, good location and excellent staff. Thank you.
P. J.
Ace location. Attentive and friendly service. I was a little underwhelmed with my vegan Wellington, but not having had one before, perhaps it was normal.
R. F.
Nice food, great portion size and a free desert with the main meal! The banana split was a lush dessert to end our meal, which was a decent price, between £5-£12 to eat. Good service, polite helpful staff. Quiet (came on a Monday) and gorgeous view of the river and canal boats. Happy times.
I. K.
The atmosphere is phenomenal! The decor is very cosy and makes you to just want to have a glass of wine and read. The food is quite nice, on the more oily side.
It’s a great pub for special occasions or just a Sunday roast!
P. W.
We went as it's wheelchair and dog friendly which is a hard combination to find. Haven't been for a while and they've had a bit of a refurbishment in what was the children's area (where you had to sit with your dog) making it much more cosy and pub like. It's lovely. The staff very welcoming and the food was very good. So glad we came and Mabel dog enjoyed the treats from the jar on the bar 😁
B. H.
Personally this is my favourite pub in the area. Lovely walks around it, service is always great. Good choice of food and drink but 10 out of 10 for location, atmosphere and service
A. R.
Amazing place. Great big cosy fireplace, candles, comfy tables/seats/chairs. The whole atmosphere was relaxed, rustic and romantic. We had fish & chips- really really good!!
D. s.
I can honestly say that this is the best Roast I have ever had. The quality and quantity of a full Sunday dinner with all the trimmings. We went just before Xmas so had pigs in blankets and creamed leeks. And muled cider. Our Table of 12 all agreed to return as this is quite literally the best place for a roast. Amazing....................
P. W.
Beautiful food and setting. The staff were amazing too!
R. B.
Great set up covered tables outside and inside the pub for drinks and good food. You can use the app or local ordering either way there is waiter service to bring your drinks and food.
m. C.
Brought two new to area. V impressed. Service excellent. Portions still too large! All in all great lunch
S. F.
Sun's out brilliant but can get busy eith steep hill
a. k.
This place is so nice and cozy, I love the outdoor seating and the food was amazing!
I. C.
Nice place, food is good, had a slight problem with pre ordered disable accessable table, but got sorted in the end. The views of the river and boats are amazing
R. W.
Very nice pub, lots of outdoor seating (perfect for these summer days.) We went next door first but they weren't serving food so they told us we could go next door. And I'm glad they did. The loaded fries were excellent. Really nicely cooked pulled pork.
J. A.
Very nice restaurant.
The food is moderately priced, though the portion sizes are very large.
I went before 6pm on a weekday and got a free desert... not just a plain, cheap one, but one of their impressive sundaes.
A little off the beaten track, but highly recommended & worth a visit.
K. D.
Food is delicious and and staff are lovely. Perfect pit stop on a cycle or walk along the Avon.
P. A.
Midday Sunday roast with friends, staff were great but the roast beef was truly exceptional, views of the river very scenic, excellent parking, a perfect day all round
L. D. B.
A bit pricy and crowdy but location is super beautiful.
K. L.
Great fish finger sandwich and the best french fries
K.
Bit pricey and menu is quite small but nice fresh food and reasonably priced pints, also has a nice view of the river
E. G.
Lovely food
Visited again today for lunch with my husband. I can honestly say the staff are really lovely, nothing is too much trouble for them. Beautiful setting
G. M.
Just had a lovely meal at the chequers to celebrate my son's birthday. Staff helpful and polite. Food was great and price was reasonable for restaurant. Nice view of the river too. Thanks for a good night
A. R. M.
Visited several times before and loved it every time.it wasn't any different this time. Their triple cooked chips are to die for and the now serve garlic sauce which is ginger licking good! Will be back very soon.
L. M.
I really like the ambiance because it is closer to nature. The food was fantastic! Looking forward to coming back again someday!
M. H.
Great food, portion size and price. The staff are friendly and helpful, we turned up when they were busy, there were no tables, but the staff were only too happy to bring a table into the restaurant to accommodate us. The pub is in a nice location and overlooks the river and is clean, cosy and modern.
m. h.
Myself and my wife are very paticular when eating out and we were surprised by the quality of food served here. We've eaten at the best and this simply blew us away! Must try for anyone who enjoys a relaxing night out with amazing food, great atmosphere and perfect location.
W. M.
Great foody pub on the canal with 2nd pub next door. Booked a quiet area for 18 people. Food was basic but very good. Had a canal walk first, very muddy but satisfying. Plenty of parking. Would be excellent in the summer. A must have is their sausage rolls from the bar.
A. J.
Lovely spot to sit and relax by the river.
C. M.
Beautiful setting, food and drinks are good but a little over priced. Great place to relax by the river though and lots of lovely places to go for a stroll before or afterwards. The car park can get very busy on nice days.
D. M.
Lovely decor in the restaurant and beautiful setting by the river. However the menu was very limited, and quite expensive for what you get. Burger and chips £12.50.... very basic, no garnish or coleslaw, skinny chips like you buy in local supermarket 79p for a bag.
S. T.
Lovely food, lovely scenery, very helpful friendly staff, now ordering through the app which is very efficient. Highly recommend the chicken, ham and leek pie.
G. M.
Great setting, and friendly welcoming atmosphere.
J. D.
No veggie roast :(
Edit: Sunday July 4th. We had a booking for 3 at 1:30pm and it didn't appear on the menu/ online menu. when we asked the young server outside he said "no we don't have any sorry"
J. A.
Tasty food, generous portion sizes, quick kitchen and friendly, helpful staff.
The Sunday lunch, with Aberdeen Angus beef, was delicious.
S. B.
Sunday roast was good my only criticism’s are it needs more gravy and for what it was a bit on the pricey side.
S. W.
Stopped for a quick drink whilst on a dog walk along the river, very welcoming and dog friendly. Will definitely return for lunch when I have more time.
D. W.
Top pub restaurant with very nice food. A hidden away gem in a great location near the river best known by locals. But it is nowhere near a "local pub", more of a trendy smart gastro pub chain.
Went on Saturday night (no reservations taken) and got a good table straight away in the adult only restaurant. There are child and dog friendly parts as well which had nice happy atmospheres by the look of them. Get yourself a great view near the windows if you can.
J. P.
Lovely pub. A great ride to it from Bristol if that tickles your fancy. Loads of outside seating and covid has brought with it the huge improvement of app driven table service 😁 Six stars.
K. B.
This is the first time I have been back since it has been taken over and is under new management. First impressions are great, I love the decor. A mix of the old with the contemporary. Style wise it ticks all the boxes, food wise ....there's still some work to be done.
We popped down for Sunday lunch, we were lucky that we could get a table (And only because it was early). Most tables were reserved. You can now book online, so I'd advise that to avoid disappointment.
We opted for a roast dinner, and at £14 a pop I was looking forward to something quite special and tasty. So I'm really disappointed to say it was frankly quite average. It looked the part but that's about it. I had one piece of parsnip and what can only be described as a spoonful of runny carrot mash. Two slices of beef that were quite fatty. And a watery cauliflower cheese that lacked cheesy-ness. And whilst the large Yorkshire pudding looked impressive, it was hard and tasted of cardboard.
Overall it was ok, but left you with a feeling that the food is overpriced for what you get. I don't think I would go back for a Sunday roast in my honest opinion.
K. M.
Very busy when we visited but we had booked a table in advance and the staff had kept it reserved for us on arrival.
The atmosphere here is great although when it's sunny it fills up quickly and so there can be a bit of a queue at the bar.
The food was good although some of the meals weren't quite as described but it still tasted good and was served hot and relatively quickly with our table of 11 having no mistakes in our orders. I have visited here a few times now and will do so again in the future
T. H.
Some of thr best food I have had in a long time, pair that with a lovely view of the canal and a really nice family atmosphere that comes from the multitude of canal relayed activities, which can be quite entertaining to watch.
c. b.
Been here on several occasions over the years, lovely pub and location is great.,however went with family food was good but during dessert my 3yr old grandson was sick on floor my daughter had to ask for paper towels and spray and staff just walked by while she cleaned the floor. Not great
R.
Great food, lovely staff, quick and easy ordering.
N. K. D.
Lovely food, fantastic attmophere and off course its always the poeple that make the difference and Harvey was amazing, ensured we good all our food and drinks on time including the dessrt ; ).
K. A.
Lovely setting next to river, good food, very nice waiting staff, would recommed
C. G.
Fabulously generous Sunday lunch. Four huge slices of roast sirloin, 3 beautifully cooked roast potatoes, crunchy without, soft as you like within, kale and honey-roasted roots with an enormous Yorkshire pudding atop. Had an extra sharing cauliflower cheese but could hardly do it justice. Lovely treacle tart and whipped ice cream to follow. Absolutely gorgeous.
A. W.
After a walk in the wood's, We would normally stop off for a drink at the Old Lock and Weir. But this time we thought we would try the newly refurbished Chequers. Wow! What a change. The decor is fab. With many different types of seating areas, inside and out. The bar staff were friendly and We enjoyed are drinks, with a lovely view of the river.
T.
Had two amazing meals here. The location, food and service is amazing. We were treated by a lovely waitress and had a very tasty and satisfying Sunday roast. Awesome.
S. S.
Lovely venue, lovely staff but a bit pricy and the roast dinner missed the mark today. I think they were under pressure as the meats were all overcooked and the cauliflower cheese was cold. Guessing it was one of those days.
j. c.
A great pub/restaurant to cycle to along the river from Bristol. Wide selection of beer and wine. We had the vege burger and ham, egg and chips and were very pleased with both. I can imaging it's the place to be on a hot summer's day.
R. M.
A FREE BANANA SPLIT - Come on does my review need to say anything else!! We have been shooting down to The Chequers Inn now for the last few years on date night as its local, comfy, good food and good value.
Only criticism would be the fact that theirs not really a children's menu and only one food order point.
The new owners have spend a pretty penny on the place adding more seating and disabled access. Which is a real measure of there commitment to making this excellent location an excellent venue.
We took the family down for a Sunday dinner a few weeks ago and we all had free deserts, I had the banana split which was amazing.
T. H.
Really middle of the road pub. Would recommend the lock keepers Inn just up the road. Good location to set off with a kayak or paddle board though
V. N.
Great views and delicious food. Beer was excellent. Great way to spend an afternoon.
J. T.
Service perfect food great.thank you
R. L.
Beautiful location, nice beer and a varied and tasty ploughman's for lunch! Just what u need after a long dog walk
s. S.
Really nice place good food freindly
J. W.
A nice pub with a good view of the river, service is only through the Young's app though which can be cumbersome to setup.
L. N.
A bit hard to find if you don't know that side of town, but once there the setting is very nice, right by the river. Lots of parking places, great outdoors seating(good/summer weather obviously) food very good.
E. O.
If you would like to eat in the restaurant, or on the terrace (which has great views over the water) you will need to book in advance! Otherwise, you are able to eat outside or in in the bar area without booking.
The food was very expensive for pub grub and for part self service (as we had to sit outside and therfore go to the bar to order and grab own cuttlery etc) although it was really tasty and my party all found the portion sizes were enough.
The biggest thing that came as a shock to us all was the price of the drinks!! £7.95 for a wine and £5.10 for a pint of beer 🙈 so just be prepared for that to bump up the cost of your evening.
L. C.
The food was good and a bit too much! The service was good and prompt. Also all the social distance rules were in place. The track and trace system worked if you logged in for having WiFi connection.
L. C.
Friendly staff. Tasty sandwich. Imagine it is a lovely spot in the summer. Plenty of outdoor seating by the river.
e.
Nice place, good food
M. K.
Great pub by the river, you can use the app now and have all delivered to your table. When this is back in full restaurant mode in the winter also a great place, so lucky to have this on the door step
J. W.
Excellent service and wonderful views. The pub is very well laid out. Most enjoyable.
D. M.
Enjoyed my lunch today, my rump steak was delicious, all tasted fresh and we'll presented, staff very attentive, treacle tart delightful. The new look is very pleasing, so worth a visit.
P. B.
A lovely pub; just a little on the expensive side. Nice food but a little on the expensive side. The location is lovely; especially in the summer being right by the riverside. A lot of the pub is dog friendly which is a massive bonus. Staff are nice and friendly.
S. H.
Great pub right on the canal. Can't be beaten when the sun's out with plenty of outdoor seating. The menu is extensive and the food is very good. Not a bad price either.
B. B.
Woukd have been nice to have had the half of Corona ordered and not a pint., that was for 2 of us
f. R.
Beer is fine, food is ok. Nice spot by the river. Take a walk along the river and through the woods. Ideally, get a boat there and back!!
t. w.
A fantastic 👏 little place and grate food big 🚗 car park eating inside or outside next to the river and you can go for a walk after lunch 😋
D. H.
Amazing food and really friendly staff. Real pleasure.
J. b.
Table for 8 served at short notice was not a problem for these guys and great food as well apparently my wifes fish was a bit wet.. im sure there's a joke there somewhere. Apart from that starter and main 20 a head bar for drinks. New look works well.
H. G.
Amazing place to visit and a beautiful walk getting there. I have had the chequers burger twice there and it's delicious. I will definitely be returning.
P. L.
We hadn't been to The Chequers since my late father-in-law's wake in 2010, but my mother-in-law was keen to try it again as it's been extensively refurbished in recent years. So, we took her out for dinner on Mothering Sunday evening.
We were not disappointed. The menu isn't huge, but big enough. We didn't have starters. My wife opted for the burger, whilst my mother-in-law and I went for roast lamb and beef respectively. It took about twenty minutes to arrive, which we didn't mind because when it arrived it was obviously freshly cooked. All our meals were generous, and we had to help mother-in-law finish her lamb.
For dessert, my wife and I chose the White Chocolate & pistachio burnt cream, a kind of Créme Brulée, whilst MIL decided to have a cappuccino.
All in all, we enjoyed our evening and look forward to going again soon.
B. D.
Nicely presented restaurant .Roasts looked good . Quite on the pricey side for food they serve and they really do not get the concept of a traditional ploughmans lunch.
No salad on my ploughmans no cheese included - just a plate of meat, sausage roll and pork pie really (cardiac arrest on a plate) . May aswell have had a ham sandwich with a couple of gherkins on the side as thats all I ate from it . Wasn't impressed at all. Although that said - my dad enjoyed his fish n chips.
R. W.
Visited twice in the last 3 weeks once for a weekday meal and once for Sunday roast on both occasions staff were very efficient and welcoming the surroundings are very nice and comfortable the food was excellent served promptly on a nice hot heated plate and a decent size portion as it should be .
Would have no hesitation recommending a visit to anyone
Well done chequers makes a change to find a venue that gets it right consistently .
C. S.
Lovely place to drink beer on a sunny day under the dappled shade of the riverside trees. Good Beer, food ok (not much home made) service sharp and not expensive. A bit hard to find and at weekends very busy and lots of kids.
D. M.
Great food, great atmosphere!
o.
Great meal watching the sun go down from the terrace. Friendly staff, not intrusive. Looking forward to coming back
C. C.
Lovely riverside pub/bar with outside seating. Yummy food, slightly over generous portions. Modern interior. Lots of parking. Wheelchair friendly.
t. r.
Had an 18th birthday meal here with all the family, although we couldn't book tables, staff were very accommodating. Good food and very helpful friendly staff in an excellent location, would definitely recommend
T. B.
Nice place by the river, friendly staff and toffee vodka enough said, maybe a little tidy up as some litter but not much
J. H.
Ok nothing special, nice to sit outside in the sun
M. P.
The approach to the chequers is along a very narrow and windy lane. There is ample parking upon you're arrival on the bank of the river Avon. Then it's up the steps to the pub / restaurant, we were greeted by a clean modern and fresh interior and with a nice bar area. The staff were friendly and professional, we had the ploughman's lunches and a round of drinks, which was very nice . The ladies and gents toilets were both modern and very clean , for me the only thing that let the chequers down slightly was that the grass verges and grassed areas in front of the pub were unkept and a brush up wouldn't have gone a miss. Apart from that all good. ps if you find this review helpful, please give it a 👍
L. S.
Nice and very beautiful lovely place
G. D.
It was a lovely ambient atmosphere, overlooking the River which was lit up at early evening.
C. S.
I have never rated a restaurant in my life. But this place deserves it. The best food I have ever eaten out in my life for the money. Well done and I will make sure all my friends know about this place.
j.
Lovely in the summer, not cheep but worth it
j. l.
Brilliant view with quick service. Be nice if they had music playing
K. M.
Good food, great service. Staff really friendly and welcoming. Love the new look to the restaurant areas.
N. S.
Great pub for a family meal. Good food and service and they even sell Proper Job on tap. Can get very busy on a Sunday.
M. A.
This was the first time we had visited since it was bought by the new owners. Its sort of gone a bit more upmarket and no longer server's light bite meals, one section of the restaurant can now be pre booked, decoration is very nice but I thought it was a bit pricey for basically pub grub
B. H.
Really good quality food for a fair price, lovely helpful staff. My partner and I moved to the other side of Bristol but still make it back regularly.
r. b.
Wow this place has changed great for families now scenic good food and drink
R. H.
Newly refurbished. Good pub, good food, good beer and excellent service. Also dog friendly. I would advise booking because it was quite busy at lunchtime when we went there midweek.
A. W.
App you have to use is confusing. They have tagged a Tips bit on the bottom of your ordering which added another £2.95 onto the price of a round of drinks.
r. p.
Very smart refurbishment. Beautifully executed to produce a very comfortable environment with excellent panoramic views of the river and boats. Great food and a fine selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. Highly recommended!
C. A.
This place is lovely, the service is great and the food as well, good prices for the big portions.
F. B.
Be prepared for a long wait and the food is very expensive. The place has been upgraded and it is very tasteful and seems to be well supported. Based on our experience I don't think we will be going again.
C. E.
Great food and lovely atmosphere. You wait a little for the food but it is well worth it- properly tasty dishes and reasonably priced. Recommended.
C. M.

Now well established after its refurbishment, this Riverside pub has a fresh modern feel and benefits from its friendly and courteous staff. Nice simple menu that is prepared and executed well.

Lovely day by the river great food 😋

A great place to eat and drink in, the only drawback is that you cannot book a table in advance. We consider ourselves lucky though to have such a nice pub/restaurant close by in a very nice location.
c. b.
Had a really nice pub meal, well re-furbished overlooking the river. Excellent walks and we could take the dog into a snug area inside the pub as well.
R. S.
A great location overlooking the river with plenty of tables for outside dining, and also panoramic views from interior dining.A good variety of choices on the menu for lunch and evening dining, well worth a visit.

Lovely Family Meal - 8 of us came for a meal and it was lovely! Staff couldn't do enough for us. Food amazing as always.

The food was nice, but a little bit pricey for standard pub food. Fantastic views though.
A. W.
Nice setting by the river to enjoy a drink and some food
J. P.
Not much choice on the mains and drinks a little overpriced, would have stayed longer after food otherwise but decided to move on.
P. C.
Staff very helpful as no idea how to use app.
Well organised with out side seating although I preferred to eat indoors
P. H.
Quick and polite service despite the fact that it was very busy (BH weekend). Food was very tasty and well presented. Very pleased with the visit.
R. S.
Lovely place to stop for a few drinks. Ample space out in the beer garden, lovely staff.
S. S.
Extremely disappointed!!
The staff has no idea what’s happening, they are in there own world chatting. Food is below average, used to be a very good pub back in the days.
A. F.
Great spot along the canal. A very busy pub for locals and visitors and packed at weekends. Well worth a visit enjoyed the Vegan Risotto.

Noisy but fantastic food. I had a dish of Cod filets with parsley and caper crushed potatoes with a pesto cream sauce. Absolutely delicious.
J. F.
I really like this pub, staff and location. I dont mind it being a bit pricey as the service is good but having to download an app so you can order outside is frustrating- all I wanted was a drink
B. H.
Great food but quite pricey

Lovely pint, great outside area
R. M.
Nice pub, well appointed, great location. Food and drinks good value, beware food portions are large! Well worth a visit.

Just got back from having lunch here to day the food was very good the only thing that we found not right was potatoes were on the firm side but you could still eat them and it was supposed to be haddock and shrimp fish cakes not enough shrimp in them otherwise no other problems with it.
B. A.
Wonderful staff. But menu very expensive for me. My burger was very nice but had just as nice, cheaper.
L. L.
Stopped here on our walk from Bath to Bristol and had a lovely meal. The vegan option was delicious.

Wow! Check out The Chequers; 'interesting' approach road but what a find & treat when you get there - whether you're a doggy family out for a walk, friends looking for a secluded 'snug', or 'cut above' restaurant with a stunning view. The food & beverages are more Waitrose than Lidl or McDonald's, well worth the freshly prepared & cooked wait and the choice is constantly evolving, apparently. Yep, we will definitely check out this Hanham near Bristol riverside rural suberbian secret again.

Need to book in advance on a Sunday as its rammed. Food nice but pricey
R. M.
Outstanding place for lunch and then a walk on the river. Either direction is good but I'd recommend heading towards the Lock Keeper for a drink then a stroll back.
L. S.

Lovely mid-week dinner - great food and atmosphere 👍
A. N.
Had a burger and chips, burger was nice but came with just skinny fries on a piece of chequered paper looked quite cheap really and cost £12:50 my mother and daughter had fish and chips and they both said the fish was very watery my brother had fish pie no complaints from him very filling he said but the one thing that got to me was the service it was so SLOW and this is the second time I have eaten there and it was just as SLOW as the first time and as far as I could see there was only 2 table's of people in that night don't think I will eat here again but will still drink there because of the lovely setting
M. G.

Nice place by the river. Good selection of beers no much about food
M. P.
Glad to see the Chequers back to its self, we have returned after deciding to frequent other establishments due to previous management. Some advice would be to find a way of getting the grey vote back on lunch times also when Andy and his brother owned the pub, on a Sunday they would put titbits on the bar, nothing ostentacious just bits of cheese, crisps, the roast potato etc. Youngs is dear pub group but people will put up with that if they are treated well and have an atmosphere they find conviveal.
G. H.
Really good, nice atmosphere, dog and children friendly, great views.
